CELEBRATION: Doris ‘Dot’ McKeown celebrated her 103rd birthday on Monday, February 8 in Malanda.

Dot celebrates 103 years When Doris ‘Dot’ McKeown was born, World War 1 was still taking place across Europe, King George V was still on the throne and Prime Minister Billy Hughes made the first ever direct radio telephone call between England and Australia.

103 years later, Dot was joined by friends and family on Monday, February 8 to celebrate her milestone 103rd

birthday at Ozcare in Malanda.

Eldest son, Bruce McKeown who is 80, said his mum still had her wits about her.

“When she can hear she is as good as gold,” he said.

“When she has her hearing aids in, she is great.

“When she was younger, she used to do a lot of knitting, reading and gardening, she loved her garden.

“Unfortunately, now she spends most of her time in a wheelchair.”

Originally born in South Johnstone, Dot moved to Atherton for work in 1939.

Originally working at the Atherton Hotel (The Stump), The Carrington Hotel and The Peanut Board.

Bruce said the whole family were born in and around Ather-

ton.

“Our family goes back to the 1800’s when they had a property on what is McKeown Road at East Barron,” he said.

Dot’s Husband Robert McKeown sadly passed away in 1979.

Dot has three children, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

Government addresses youth crime

BY PHIL BRANDEL AFTER the spike in youth crime over the past few weeks on the Tablelands, Cairns and Townsville, the State Government have announced that they will move immediately to further crackdown on juvenile crime.

But organiser of the anti-crime rallies in Mareeba and Atherton last week, Bill Cohen said the new government announments don’t go far enough.

“The governments new ideas aren’t going to fix anything because they are after the fact solutions,” he said.

“The government needs to nip it in the bud before the crime starts.

“We need community programs and interventions.”

Mr Cohen said the turnout for the rallies in Mareeba and Atherton were better than expected.

“The feedback we got was amazing and we got a couple of good ideas from the rally that we are now trying to action,” he said.

“We now have to speak to the powers that be, to make those ideas happen and we have plans for more meetings and rallies in the future.”

Last week, in a joint statement from The Premiers office and the Attorney-General, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the loss of four innocent lives linked to a spate of senseless crimes would not go unanswered.

“It is clear to me and to the community that some young offenders simply don’t care about consequences,” the Premier said.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said young offenders needed to learn the consequences of their actions.

“This is about targeting the hard-

core repeat offenders – those 10 per cent of youth offenders who are frequently putting the community at risk.

“We must stop young hardcore offenders being let out on bail and reoffending the next day. That is why we are making these changes to bail laws.

“Ten per cent of all youth offenders account for 48 per cent of all youth crime.

“It is this group we will target with all the force and resources at our disposal.”

In response to the new announcements from the State Government, Member for Hill Shane Knuth has launched an e-petition and paper petition to be tabled in Parliament in late March after what he claims is “a band-aid solution to fix youth crime which fell short of community expectations.”

Mr Knuth, who attended the crime rallies in both Atherton and Mareeba last week, said stronger action needed to be taken to reduce youth crime.

“Full credit to Queenslanders right across the state who have been strongly advocating for tougher legislation for repeat juvenile offenders,” Mr Knuth said.

“Sadly, a number of lives have been lost and while the Palaszczuk Government has taken a small step to crack down on youth crime it doesn’t go far enough.

“Not only must we address and strengthen current bail laws, but we need a deterrent to stop juveniles from reoffending.”

Mr Knuth said that KAP is calling for a third sentencing option to be made available to the courts for juvenile offenders.

considered which aims to send repeat offenders to remote areas, teach them values and skills, which helps break the cycle of crime and act as a deterrent to preventing further offences,” he said.

“We have also seen the destruction that unlawful use of a motor vehicle can do to lives and families.

This must also be included as a serious offence charge.

“This is a change to juvenile laws that all Queenslanders have been screaming out for.”

Mr Knuth said the petition focuses on the gaps that Labor has left out of their recent announcements such as: • Trial a third option for the courts, in the form of relocation sentencing, as a deterrent and to facilitate the rehabilitation of youth offenders.

• Include a presumption against bail for youths charged with the unlawful use of a motor vehicle, in addition to the government announced, breaking and entering, serious sexual assault and armed robbery charges.

Seek assurances from parents and guardians ▶ That bail conditions will be complied with before an offender is released.

• Amend legislation to re-introduce breach of bail as an offence for repeat youth offenders.

• Ensure that courts are adequately resourced so that youth offenders are dealt in an expeditious manner, so that delay in judicial processes are not used as a reason for youth offenders to be granted bail.

• Repeal Schedule 1, Youth Justice Act 2015, Charter of Youth Justice, Item 18 which provides that a child should be detained in custody for an offence, whether on arrest, remand or sentence, only as a last resort and for the least time that is justified in the circumstances.

Strengthen existing bail laws to provide further guidance to the courts ▶ The Youth Justice Act will be amended to include a reference to the community being protected from recidivist youth offenders in the Charter of Youth Justice Principles.

The government will also enshrine in legislation the existing common law principle that offending whilst on bail is an aggravating circumstance when the court is imposing a sentence.

To prevent crime ▶ Police will be given metal detecting wands to target knife crime on the Gold Coast. ▶ Anti-hooning laws will be strengthened to hold the registered owner of a vehicle responsible except where the vehicle is stolen or the owner can identify another driver; and ▶ A parliamentary inquiry will examine the implementation of remote engine immobilisers.

Malanda Falls closed HEAVY rainfall has created uncertainty to the structure of the Malanda Falls swimming area leaving it temporarily closed.

The popular swimming spot has been found to have a weakened foundation making it unsafe for a quick dip.

Tablelands Regional Coun-

cil (TRC) has put resident’s safety first by ensuring that the unsteady concreting and rapid flood waters do not bring harm to area users.

A TRC spokesperson said engineers are to be onsite to conduct an assessment in the coming weeks.

Locals help increase liveability in Shire In December last year Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) released a survey asking locals for their opinions on current open spaces and parks in the Shire.

The feedback will assist MSC with the Parks and Open Spaces Strategy, designed to create better public spaces with more efficient planning and managing for the growing community in the Mareeba Shire.

More than 400 responses will help assist Council in maintaining various recreational parks including waterway esplanades, streetscapes, footpaths and cycleways.

These responses will also assist MSC to find ways to encouraging more active communities,

improve visual appeal and improve overall liveability.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin has thanked everyone who took the time to participate in the survey.

“The community feedback will give Council a better understanding of how the community currently uses our parks and open spaces and their ideas for these recreation areas,” she said.

“The information will assist us developing actions and priorities under the Parks and Open Spaces Strategy.”

MSC is in the process of analysing the responses and is yet to set a date on any projects going ahead.

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council to support local arts, culture and heritage as key drivers of diverse and inclusive communities and strong regions.

Applications must be submitted by 5pm Friday, February 26.

Remembering our Nashos TO coincide with the 70th Anniversary of the commencement of National Service in 1951, ceremonies were held on Saturday, February 13 to recognise the last day that Australian Nashos marched out in 1974.

Significant ceremonies were held on the Atherton Tablelands, Townsville and Innisfail.

Although they have passed on, nine Tableland soldiers who served in both of Australia’s National Service 1951 to 1972 schemes were recognised at a dedication ceremony held at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park in Tolga.

The ceremony was performed by National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (QLD), Tablelands Branch Chaplain, Padre Mick Grant with plaques permanently erected in the Nasho shelter at War Memorial Park where family members paid tribute with a poppy.

Those who were recognised for their service include three Vietnam veterans, one a former Tolga State School student, Joseph Ramsay killed in Vietnam in 1969 with 4RAR. The other two Bob Auer of Malanda and Dale McCarthy of Atherton soldiers who were under the 1951 to 1959 scheme.

“We have held these recognition ceremonies over the past five years and they have been well attended by the

families and friends of the deceased,” said Tablelands Branch President John Hardy.

The Branch also acknowledged the support provided by the Tablelands Regional Council with a Community Grant towards this event.

“Don’t just palm it off, I just kept thinking I was old and unfit. I could not understand why my fitness was getting worse even though I’m a regular bike rider.

“It’s because my heart as a pump was completely failing.

“The doctor said my heart will now see me out, instead I will be dying from something else, but it won’t be my heart,” Cr Marti said with a laugh.

“I’m also not allowed to drive for another three weeks.”

Cr Marti said it was a convenient time to have the operation.

“Timing wise it worked out well because over Christmas council has a bit of down time, this week I’m being debriefed by the CEO, the Deputy Mayor and the councilors,” he said.

“The doctor said once I’ve recovered, I will be fitter and

healthier than I was over the past three to four years.

“I want to say thank you to Kev Cardew for standing up as Acting Mayor and thank you to the councillors and the council staff who have covered for me

over the past nine weeks.

“I appreciate all their help and I’m looking forward to building my health up over the next few weeks and getting back to fulltime work.”

TRC Mayor Rod Marti is back at work on Monday after his recent health scare.

BY PHIL BRANDEL Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti was back at work this week after suffering a major health scare over the past few months.

At the November ordinary general meeting, Cr Marti announced that he would be taking leave over Christmas and during January 2021.

Last Monday Mr Marti returned to work after undergoing

open heart surgery in December.

“I was feeling tired and lethargic and breathless all the time, so in mid-October I went to see my GP and he discovered that I had a heart murmur,” Cr Marti said.

“A heart murmur is where the heart is not pumping blood properly, it’s a leaking heart valve.”

On December 9, Cr Marti underwent open heart surgery in Brisbane to repair the valve and flew back home on December

21 to begin his recovery.

“It’s now been nine weeks post-surgery and I’ve lost a fair bit of weight,” he said.

“The Doctor said if I ignored the symptoms and kept going, I would have only had about another three years left to live.

“We are so lucky to live in Australia, the service and healthcare I got from hospital staff was amazing.

“The Doctor has given me the all clear to return to work as long as I’m feeling ok and as

Yoga changing lives in Millaa Millaa

KAP Member for Hill Shane Knuth has celebrated 17 years in his position as an MP this month. Mr Knuth has seen his fair shares of highs and lows in his time in office in the last 10 years alone. He thanks the community for their ongoing support in his second year as Member for Hill.

Seminar to prevent weather related plane crashes IN preparation of future bad weather, pilots from Atherton will be attending a special safety seminar.

They will learn what decisions need to be made when the weather takes an unexpected turn.

The seminar will be hosted

by The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as a part of a campaign to reduce weather related accidents.

CASA’s Peter Gibson says correct decision making by pilots is crucial.

“Accidents continue to happen when pilots flying visually get into deteriorating weather,” he said.

“Local pilots will learn more about how to assess weather conditions before and during flight, how to plan for weather and how to make good decisions.

“All pilots receive training on weather related safety but ongoing education in this vital area is essential.”

The seminar will be held on Sunday, February 21 at the Atherton Aero Club.

BY SALLY turley Attending their first yoga class with instructor Carina Platt at the Millaa Millaa CWA hall eight years ago, this group of ladies whose ages span five decades, could never have foreseen what a life changing journey they had begun.

Joan Staun, who has just turned 89 attended the original yoga class when they started after she lost her husband and said she looks forward to going each week. She used to play golf and while she said she is not a people person, she would not miss her weekly session because of how good it made her feel.

Ellis Schumacher, who will be 90 in May, has been doing yoga now for two years and is still able to manage her 15 stairs at home. When she had sciatic problems last year, she just started doing the 10 squats recommended by her naturopath and is back in good health.

Aging in a small country town whilst caring for an elderly partner can be quite an isolating experience. Those affected can become quite housebound, especially if they lose their ability to drive.

But the sense of belonging, acceptance and increasing wellbeing they have found with their yoga group has made a huge difference to the lives of those involved.

Millaa Millaa Clinical Nurse Consultant Narelle Murphy joked that the yoga classes were reducing her client base.

Conditions such as high blood pressure, arthritis and reduced mobility suffered by many elderly Millaa residents meant Ms Murphy had a very busy

schedule, but that has started to change.

“Knowing the medical conditions most of these ladies have, I just look at them and think wow, aren't they doing well. I have noticed the ladies who have been attending yoga have become a lot more agile,” she said.

“They are now able to sit down and get back up without holding onto their chairs, they are bending down to put shoes on and off and their improved balance means they are having less falls.”

But more than just the physical improvements, Ms Murphy believed the group were experiencing mental and social benefits as well.

They were experiencing more positive moods which made them more confident to go out and socialise. They were reconnecting with friends and their community and in the process improving their quality of life

and their longevity.

Yoga instructor Carina Platt wanted to use gentle movement to help slow down the aging process for locals and to promote mental health through friendship and an active social life.

She said the take up was quite slow initially with only about five ladies coming for the first few years, but this number had gradually grown to 12 to 16 at most classes these days.

She said there was very little information available initially on the Chair Yoga classes she has been offering and she had to rely on her years of experience to design the gentle classes her clients needed.

“We have gone way beyond a Chair Yoga Class now, we usually end the class with a free dance session and then the whole group goes to one of the local cafes for morning tea. We have a lot of fun together,” Carina said.

Help write history A local author who is compiling a book on interesting Far North characters is looking for some local help.

Author Eugenie Navarre (pictured) said the idea for the book came to her after working as a journalist across the Far North and now she is hoping to write a book about interesting Far North Queensland characters, families, and their stories.

One story Ms Navarre is compiling is a story about a Cobb and Co driver by the name of Robert Croft.

Mr Croft was the first driver to take mail across ‘The Bump” from Cairns to Herberton with his family settling in and around Almaden and later on in Mareeba.

Cobb and Co transported mail, gold and supplies across

the Far North in horse drawn coaches.

For years Mr Croft drove the Georgetown mail run but as coach travel was phased out he started working as a fettler on the railways.

Now Ms Navarre is hoping locals and history buffs may be able to help her.

“I’m looking for photos of the first Cobb and Co coaches around the area as well as photos of Mr Robert Croft and his family,” she said.

“Mr Croft’s daughter Alice Harriman lived in Walsh street Mareeba until her death.

“I’m now hoping to track down descents of Mr Croft or Ms Harriman, for a chat and to see if they have any photos,” The Harrimans had eight children, 29 grandchildren and

30 great grandchildren and Eugenie believes that Mr and Mrs Harriman lived in Walsh street Mareeba until they passed.

“I believe they had loads of old photos, so now I’m hoping to track down where those photos ended up.”

Heritage Centre finalist in national awards

THE Mareeba Heritage Museum has been named as a finalist in the Grey Nomad Awards, cementing the region’s reputation as destination for mature age tourists.

The Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre has been shortlisted in the 2020 Best Grey Nomad Attraction or Tour category. The winners will be announced on Tuesday March 2 at an event on

the Sunshine Coast.

The multi-faceted attraction, which includes interactive exhibits, a café, giftshop, booking office and function venue, features 6,000 artefacts and over 47 exhibits.

The Museum also recently introduced numerous new experiences that impressed the judges, including a service where visitors can gain their Fossicking License at the centre, the

General Manager of the Mareeba Heritage Centre, Janet Greenwood said word of mouth was a big factor in the Heritage Centre being nominated.

“We have a really good reputation with people who are travelling on the road,” she said.

“Often when people come in, they say they have been told by other travellers to drop in.

“We have lots of parking,

free Wi-Fi, public facilities, they can then get a coffee, or lunch and can spend time wandering around the museum.”

Janet said it was exciting that they had been nominated for the award.

“It’s very exciting. It’s great to be recognised and to be compared to some of the other finalists is super exciting.”

Janet also said that the number of grey nomads visiting has

dropped.

“The award is based on 2020, but since then due to COVID our numbers have dropped, and we aren’t seeing as many grey nomads as usual.”

The Grey Nomad Awards are judged by mature-age tourism professionals.

The judges congratulated the centre and the Mareeba community on a successful year of operation despite the challenges.

Cowboys pass along mental health message

Former North Queensland Cowboys Ray Thompson and Gavin Cooper.

STUDENTS at Mareeba State High School (MSHS) recently got a special visit from the North Queensland Cowboys as they delivered a message of positive mental health through The Resilience Project.

Over Monday and Tuesday last week MSHS students were introduced to the Resilience Project through former North Queensland Cowboys Gavin

Cooper and Ray Thompson.

The Resilience Project seeks to teach positive mental health strategies to kids through three pillars, Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness.

These pillars are the foundation for The Resilience Project and are delivered through humour, vulnerability and personal experiences to better connect with the audience.

Mr Thompson said that this is an effective project, and he has personally used its teachings in his own life.

“Through my own life journeys and experiences I implemented the strategies every single day and still do now with my kids, it’s had a profound impact on my life,” he said.

“What we do is use our playing experience, personal experience but also our brand to promote something really positive for the community.

“It’s not about football, it’s not about the club it’s about the message.”

The Cowboys encountered the Resilience Project in 2015 and has since used their status as a platform to better inform and educate youth on positive mental health practices.

They have joined a wide range of other sporting brands including the Australian Cricket, Netball and Soccer teams, all other NRL clubs and multiple

AFL teams.

The Resilience Project is specially curriculum tailored for teachers and schools to easily access and understand the material, the project is currently being utilized by over 1000 schools and 1 million Australians.

Zach nominated for local young achiever’s award A Mareeba local has been nominated for a prestigious Queensland award for the work that he does helping local indigenous youth.

Zachimo ‘Zach’ Kulka has been nominated for the Kennelly Constructions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Achievement Award in the 2021 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards.

The aim of the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards is to acknowledge, encourage and promote the positive achievements of young people across Queensland.

Category winners will each receive $2,000 and a trophy.

One of the category winners will be named the 2021 Queensland Young Achiever of the Year and will also receive a state trophy.

Jessie Williams who is employed in the Office for Youth within the Department of Environment and Science nominated Zach due to his work on not only himself but also in becoming a leader to local Indigenous youth in the area.

“The person I met in 2019 was shy and was very quiet, but by doing our programs and by putting his hand up to become a mentor, he has grown so much in

himself,” she said.

“He has really put himself out there while also looking after others.

“This year we have invited him back to our leadership program to be a lead mentor.”

Zach said he feels like he has already won just by being nominated.

“It feels like I have achieved something just being nominated,” he said.

“Its great that someone has recognised the work that I’ve done with my family and my people.”

Zach said that he grew up in Mossman and in 2019 moved to Mareeba to get away from a bad situation. “I did the get ready for work program at the Mareeba PCYC which empowered me to bring out my potential,” he said.

“From there I did a traineeship as a youth support officer in Mareeba.

“Then I got to go to Brisbane to participate in the Queensland Indigenous leadership program which taught me how to become a leader in my community.”

A year later Zach applied to become a mentor at the leadership program. He now works as a full-time youth support of-

ficer at the PCYC in Mareeba and said that he is there to help youth who need help. “There are services that can help the youth in Mareeba,” he said.

“If they come in and give us a chance to help them, then their potential can be found.”

Zach said his job at the PCYC has several layers. “I engage youth in going back to school and engaging them into employment or study,” he said.

“I also help them with their health and wellbeing and getting them into community programs or referring them to programs that can help.”

One thing that Zach said local youth needed was more positive leaders.

“What we really need are more positive leaders in our community,” he said.

“There’s a lack of leadership within families and homes. If young people could see positive leaders in the community, they would follow.”

The winners will be announced at an award’s gala presentation dinner on Friday. May 7 in Brisbane.

Officers ready for the beat

Two constables who recently completed their full training year with the Tablelands Patrol Group have received their confirmation of appointment certificates and will soon head off to their permanent appointments.

Shelly Wright has been assigned to the Cardwell Police division and Aylin Hudaverdi has been assigned to the Ipswich Police division.

Constable Wright is excited that her chosen placement of Cardwell was approved and she is looking forward to starting.

“I joined the police service because I actually wanted to do small town community policing,” she said.

“I’m from the southeast corner and I didn’t really want to go back there.

“I wanted to be somewhere near water so I think Cardwell will definitely tick all the boxes.”

Acting Inspector of the Tablelands Patrol Group, Greg Giles said he is happy to see so many young officers coming through the ranks.

“It’s good to see that they have come up to Mareeba and Atherton and achieved their first-year confirmation,” he said.

“They have both performed very well and they are moving onto new chapters in their lives.

“It’s an uphill battle, you’re

constantly learning. I’ve been in this job 30 years and I still don’t know everything, there is a lot to learn out there.”

There are many more upcoming police officers expected this year, with five currently in training within the Tablelands Patrol Group all set to finish this year.

Two officers will receive their confirmation of appointments in March after completing their training year, while the second group of three officers who are currently still in training, will achieve their confirmation of appointment just before Christmas.

AFTER spending years providing a fine dining experience to residents of the Tablelands, popular restaurant Obi’s will be closing at the end of February and moving on.

The announcement came via Obi’s Facebook page on January 28 and support for the restaurants owners Vanessa

Harris and Obi Oberhauser has poured in since the announcement.

After being offered an amazing 200-seater venue in Cooktown, Obi saw it as an opportunity he could not pass up.

“200 people a night and 100 people for lunch is what

we do in a week here, it’s one day up there,” he said.

“We got the best deal you could get, it’s just so attractive that I could not turn it down.

“Thank you to everyone on the Tablelands for their amazing support we cannot thank the locals and businesses enough.”

By making the move to Cooktown, Obi will also be able to spend time with his family and take a more active role and focus on what he does best, cooking.

FNQ youth to shape future with the UN

TABLELAND’S youth are invited to express thoughts and ideas for the future of Far North Queensland at a listening tour hosted by the United Nations in Atherton on Saturday.

United Nations (UN) Australia Youth Representative Lucy Stronach will be running the UN Youth Representative Program with a two hour consultation followed by a work-

shop.

The goal is to improve the engagement of young people in regional towns and guide them in becoming the nations next key drivers in decision-making.

The idea’s taken from the session will be taken to the UN where Ms Stronach will advocate on the youth’s behalf.

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Councillor Peter Hodge expresses what an empowering program this will be for the Tableland’s youth.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Tablelands youth (16–25 years) to learn about the Youth Rep program and have input into the consultation,” he said.

“It will be a very empowering program and Lucy will be encouraging participants to develop vision and passion to create meaningful change within our community and throughout the world.

“She will be discussing what Australia would look like

Named the ‘End of Summer Gala’ the refuge is hoping to catch the public’s imagination with the quirky idea of holding a ‘non-event’ to celebrate the end of summer

and raise much needed funds for the refuge.

The refuge is asking residents to work out how much they would normally spend to attend a formal function and instead of paying for tickets, buying an outfit, food, beverages, raffles and so on, and having to dress up and go out, supporters can save

Committee member Andreas Jodner said that it would be the ultimate COVID safe event.

“There is no need for hand sanitiser, to check in or even social distancing, because supporters are not going anywhere,” he said.

“Being an at home event they can do whatever they like, whether that be a formal dress up night, a girl’s night in or just watching a movie it’s totally up to the individual and we hope that they pass the hat around.

“We are hoping people will take photos of their home event and post it on our Facebook page.”

To make the event even more quirky the team has set the non-event date to take place on February 29, which, isn’t in this year’s calendar.

The committee are hoping that people will celebrate at home on a day either side of the 29th.

Mareeba Animal Refuge volunteers and committee members Kerry Gardner, Felicity Pollard, Andreas Jodner and Buddy who is up for adoption.

Last year the refuge helped 184 cats and 177 dogs get adopted into their new furever homes and like many charities, COVID impacted on last year’s fundraising events.

Mr Jodner said the refuge struggles to meet on-going costs with almost $4000 a

month going to vet bills alone.

“When someone pays $300 for a dog, that covers flea, tick and worm treatment, microchipping, vaccinations and desexing,” he said.

“Vet fees are our biggest cost, and then there’s also food for the dogs and cats.

“Since the beginning of 2021 we are once again filled with cats and dogs waiting for their fur-ever homes.”

Home building boom causes domino effect across region

THE house building industry is booming across the Tablelands with several building companies booked out months in advance creating a domino effect in the local economy.

Even though 2021 has only just begun the housing market has exploded with new houses being commissioned faster than companies can build them.

This is due to the introduction of the Australian Government’s HomeBuilder grant last year, giving Australians a subsidy to help build their dream homes.

This has caused a massive spike and local builders have been completely inundated with orders. Some have even been booked out for three quarters of the year already.

Director of Shane Smith Builder in Mareeba, Joanne Smith has even had to turn people away due to the number of orders they are currently processing.

“We are in the terrible process of having to say to people that we cannot do anymore quotes currently,” she said.

“It is still great to see the surge and it’s great for all the suppliers in town as well.

Prices of materials have also spiked in retaliation to the building spike and in turn has driven the price of building up as well, creating another domino effect working against home builders.

“What I don’t want to see is that we end up with a big flop after it’s finished,” she said.

Headley Homes Atherton Salesman Ray Mills said that they are working on building 23 homes in just one estate alone.

“It’s a challenge at the moment with the quantity of work

and the jobs to get through,” he said.

“We are definitely a lot busier than usual; we are currently very busy with the Panorama Views Estate in Tolga.

“It’s great to see all this business coming through that’s for sure.”

The building spike has also affected residents securing their loans from banks as they struggle to keep up with the amount of people applying, this has made the process of securing a loan much longer than normal.

HomeBuilder provides eligible owner-occupiers (including first home buyers) with a grant to build a new home or substantially

renovate an existing home.

HomeBuilder assists the residential construction sector by encouraging the commencement of new home builds and renovations.

Changes to the HomeBuilder program include: A $15,000 grant for building contracts (new builds and substantial renovations) signed between January 1 2021 and March 31, 2021, inclusive.

An extended deadline for all applications to be submitted, including those applying for the $25,000 grant and the new $15,000 grant. Applications can now be submitted up until April 14, 2021 (inclusive).

Spare the rod and spoil the child LAST week the Palaszczuk government announced some ‘new’ measures aimed at cracking down on youth crime.

The announcements come after an increase in youth crime across North Queensland which included a carjacking in Atherton, which was then driven to Mareeba, Kuranda and Cairns as well as the tragic death of Jennifer Board in Townsville.

The ‘new’ announcements from the government include the fitting of GPS trackers as a condition of bail for recidivist high risk offenders aged 16 and 17. Seeking assurances from parents and guardians that bail conditions will be complied with and that the Youth Justice Act be amended to include a reference to the community being protected from recidivist youth offenders.

In the above paragraph there is not a single original idea from the State Government.

Where are the laws punishing the parents, or harsher penalties or even mandatory imprisonment?

All the above ideas are based around what to do with youth AFTER they have committed a crime, there is not one single idea to deter young criminals.

Instead, the courts will now ask mummy and daddy if they can guarantee that their children will behave, as well as GPS bracelets and in-

creased bail restrictions.

The trackers will be trialled only in Moreton, North Brisbane, Townsville, Logan and the Gold Coast, and offenders under the age of 16 are excluded.

So why are the 10 – 15 year old offenders being excluded from having a GPS tracker?

We need ideas to combat crime before it happens, we need deterrents, we need to send a message that if you do the crime you will do the time. These latest announcements say ‘if you do the crime, we may have to talk to your mum and dad’.

At last week’s anticrime rally in Mareeba a elderly gentleman got up and spoke about the crime rate in Singapore.

He spoke about how thieves in Singapore received the rattan cane.

The Singaporean government has stated that in its opinion, the Convention on the Rights of the Child does not prohibit “the judicious application of corporal punishment in the best interest of the child.”

A lot of people are against corporal punishment and so was I until I witnessed the high rates of repeat offenders in The Far North. So, I ask you this, what is worse 24 strokes of the Rattan or a lifetime in and out of jail with no guarantees to the local community?

Maybe what we need to start asking, in the long run what is best for the child?

Sick and tired of crime on the Tablelands

IT seems to be common knowledge on the Tablelands that someone in authority in Cairns has decided that there is too much youth crime in Cairns so they are buying houses and moving whole families to Atherton and Mareeba to get rid of the problem youth.

If this is the truth then this could be the reason for our rising youth crime rare up here.

I suppose the authorities are moving them out of Cairns because it will affect visitor numbers from all over the world.

Atherton and Mareeba are not well known in this respect so they have decided to hide the problem up here hoping it will simply go away.

Lets face it, it is bad for our international image and will if not put a stop to cost the Tourism Industry millions in revenue.

Unfortunately a slap on the wrist is obviously not enough but then putting young offenders in goal only mixes them with the wrong people and they get worse not better. Crickey what a dilemma.

Member for Cook needs to make crime a priority

ON February 4 this year I attended the street office of the Cook electorate Cynthia Lui at the Mareeba IGA requesting her attendance at the rally against Crime that was held in Arnold park in Mareeba on February 5 and in Atherton February 6.

She declined our invitation saying that she had “other appointments to attend to” but she then went on to promise that she was willing to make time to have a sit-down meeting and to call her office in Cairns to

make an appointment.

On the February 12 I did just that only to be told that the soonest available time for her to meet was mid to late April.

You would think that such an important thing as the safety and security of the people who voted her in would be top priority.

Bill Cohen CRIME AND JUSTICE GROUP TABLELANDS

Anti-crime rallies WELL done to the organisers of the anti-crime rallies in Mareeba and Atherton. The complaint seemed to have been well-aired.

Although understated, it was clear that the problem aired was one of unruly indigenous youth. The reporting also showed that the political leaders on the Tableland and key speakers at the rally have reasonable understanding of the complexity of the problem.

On things to develop: the rally was very white. This is not a problem in of itself, but does point to an ongoing challenge for any work that needs to engage first nations families in the solution.

As The Express editorial on MP Lui, noted, appearance is important. Creating the appearance of an us vs them in race relations will hamper rather than expedite a change in the issue of unruly youth.

Until a rally of this sort can have a relevant representation of first nations people then the divide that is indicated will make any type of solution, ineffective.

It also puts indigenous political leaders, such as Cynthia Lui, between a rock and a hard place in dealing with her electorate.

While each of us will make political choices at the ballot box, it behoves us to consider how we are relating to MPs and senators to gain their best work for our communities.

While it is very challenging for non-indigenous peo-

ples to find a way of engaging first nations people in our community, there are pathways and some who have and are doing this, well. I implore everyone who were at these rallies to take up that challenge.

There is also a significant expertise in crime prevention strategies in Australia.

Most of the evidence points to the contrary effect of youth detention and gaol.

Some of it relates to urban planning and respect for infrastructure (home), some to family dysfunctions, some to educational system processes, some to jobs and career prospects, some to community integration.

Regional Councils and MPs and other government and non-government bodies would do well to form an official collaboration with the purpose of drawing upon that expertise as the most sure pathway to permanent crime prevention in the communities of the far north.

I tell you, that Jesus died on a cross to save the world, what an unusual way to say “I love you” How many of us have an unusual way to say “I love you”, how many of us have lovers that would die for us?

No, we send red roses.

The story tells, it was a crown of thorns they placed upon His head and mocked him, and the colour of his blood that was shed, yes it was red.

Roses last a day, maybe two, but God’s love ensures

forever.

When we fall, He lifts us up (everyday), when we fail, He encourages us (everyday), when we sin, He forgives (everyday) when we haven’t enough, He provides (everyday) when we sin, He forgives (everyday).

This is love.

God so loved the world, that He sent His Son, Jesus to die for it, that means you and me.

Tableland Maize industry may fall under Armyworm

Maize grower Geoff Riesen of "Kulara" near Kairi is concerned the devestating impact of the Fall armyworm might mean an end to the Tablelands maize industry.

BY SALLY TURLEY Third generation farmer, Geoff Riesen of "Kulara" near Kairi, is afraid a widespread outbreak of the Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), across the Atherton Tablelands could signal the death knell for the local maize industry.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, the insect has been spreading rapidly through Africa, India, China and South East Asia, since 2016, before arriving in Australia in February last year.

Different to any armyworm Australian farmers have encountered previously the nocturnal Fall armyworm caused signifi-

cant and rapid damage to crops and had reportedly destroyed entire grain paddocks overnight.

They are most active during the warm humid evenings of late summer and early autumn and while it appears maize and sorghum are their preferred food, they will feed on more than 350 different fruit, vegetable and grass species.

Geoff Riesen said he has been growing corn for over 30 years and had never seen anything like what is happening at the moment in paddocks across the Tableland. He has typically planted more than 120 hectares of corn each year on his home farm and across 3 other lease blocks.

He said he had experienced invasions from other species of armyworm over the years, usually about once every decade, but after one application of chemical, they would be wiped out and damage could be kept to a minimum.

Unfortunately that has not been the case with the Fall armyworm. Mr Riesen said he knows of other farmers in the area who are on their fourth and fifth application of pesticide and are still not rid of the voracious pests.

"With this new variety, pupation occurs mostly in the soil under the host plant, so even if you get a 100% kill with the worms, another batch of larvae are getting ready to emerge and you are forced to start spraying all over again" he said.

Desperate to win the battle against this plague, farmers have been aerial spraying as well as ground spraying, and spraying during the night when the armyworms come out to feed after it became obvious that spraying during the day was having limited impact.

Mr Riesen said he was lucky he had planted later this year and was able to learn from other farmers' experiences. He knew what to look for and learned the importance of timing when spraying. He had been advised to wait a little longer until the majority of the larvae had hatched, which has made his spray campaign more successful.

Nearby maize farmer Pompey Pezzelato, whose family took up farming in the Kairi area in 1932 has also never seen anything like what is happening at the moment. He has sprayed

his 5 week old corn crop twice already and has suffered a 30% reduction in yield from his first silage crop harvested.

He has planted subsequent crops much thicker to compensate for the expected losses and is trialling a new chemical designed to draw the worms out of the centre of the plants, exposing them to the spray to achieve a better kill.

He said many farmers have been just ploughing crops in and were hoping the cooler temperatures experienced by their next crop would slow down the activity of the invaders.

He said it was not sustainable to keep spraying at a cost of $30 - $40 per hectare and he had already begun to diversify. He was moving into avocado trees and was planting 1100 trees at the moment with another 1100 to go in towards the end of the year.

While it is the corn industry bearing the brunt of the destruction at the moment, Mr Riesen said it would not end there.

The alarming rate at which the worms were spreading and their tendency toward such a wide range of plants, made it only a matter of time before other crops were affected.

A large proportion of corn grown on the Tablelands was destined to become contract silage for the area's major dairy farms. The Fall armyworm's destruction of vast areas of crop would create large shortages of silage, making it impossible for growers to deliver on contracted tonnages.

or significantly reduce herd numbers which would have a potentially serious flow on effect within the dairy industry.

"Many maize growers were already doing the sums and questioning whether they would be growing corn again next year" Mr Riesen said. " “I have one farm left to plant and am seriously considering putting it under dolichos lab lab pasture instead of corn. I don't think I will grow winter corn this year. Even with all the spraying we don't get a 100% kill. I will be happy just to break even from this season.

Many farmers have five year leases on country which they will have to pay regardless and

don't know what they will plant next year. If they are carrying heavy debt loads on top of all the additional costs and reduced yields, they may not survive.

Growers should check crops regularly for leaf damage, larvae and larvae excrement to ensure they are free of Fall armyworms.

Government legislation sours sugar industry

Kairi canegrower Wayne Kattenberg, is frustrated by the consistent, incremental creep of legislation layers being heaped on their industry by government and the lack of acknowledgement of the effort being made on farm by growers.

BY SALLY TURLEY Fourth generation farmer and prominent cane-grower, Wayne Kattenburg of Kairi, said the proposed new government legislation relating to crop expansion, was pointless and downright frustrating.

From June 21, new or expanded areas of commercial cropping along the Queensland coast would require an environmental permit and would be expected to show that their operation met “standard conditions.”

Canegrowers CEO, Dan Galligan has called on the govern-

ment to exempt sugarcane growers from these new rules because they were clearly a duplication of existing industry guidelines and highlighted the government's failure to recognise how sustainable the cane industry already was.

This legislation, which related to the avoidance and mitigation of water runoff and soil loss through the detailed planning of earthworks, irrigation and crop design, was already covered voluntarily under sugar's best practice program, Smartcane BMP, he said.

He believed farmers were

already taking responsibility for their share of drainage to the reef and extensive water quality monitoring was already in place across the state. "This 'big stick' approach from government would benefit nobody and only adversely affect the number of people willing to enter or invest in the industry in the future" he said.

Mr Kattenburg said this legislation, which focused on achieving water quality outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef was particularly irrelevant to Tableland cane growers.

Tableland farms experienced minimal water and soil loss in comparison to their coastal counterparts because there were already geographically mitigated.

“Any water that leaves our farm goes into the Mazlin and Barron Rivers and ends up in Tinaroo Dam, which acts as a filtering system in itself,” Mr Kattenburg said.

“About 80 per cent of that is put out through irrigation at Arriga, southwest of Mareeba, from where any runoff flows west away from the reef.

“We also stool split our crop in September each year, which places the fertilizer 15cm under-

ground at the base of the plant, meaning the majority of the chemical has been taken up by the cane before the heavier rains arrive in December/January.

“Once planted a cane crop will return after harvest for at least five to six years, which meant soils weren't being disturbed annually and established root tussocks were effective soil stabilisers.

“Because we don't burn, the trash blanket from each harvest remains in the paddock and holds the water back, almost eliminating top-soil losses, even in heavy rain events.

“We have a nutrient management plan in place with a planned annual reduction of the use of nitrogen on our crops. Everything we do meets or exceeds BMP requirements, yet government has chosen to penalise us further under this new blanket requirement,” Mr Kattenburg said.

Sugar cane has become a major Tableland industry, generating close to almost $40,000,000 worth of revenue annually, and employing hundreds of mill workers, contractors and onfarm staff.

Tableland Canegrowers Chairman, Claude Santucci said they were not happy at all with

this latest push by government.

“Farmers already voluntarily participate in the BMP Reef Regulations program and are audited every five years,” he said.

“We are bending over backwards to do the right thing by the environment. We want to protect the reef too. All this new legislation will do is put another layer

of uncertainty, risk and paperwork on farmers for no gain,” he said.

Canegrowers would be making a submission for exemption to government before the February 17 deadline and would continue to advocate for collaborative, voluntary engagement and a strong future for farmers.

Prawn and snow pea stir fry

Ingredients

▶ 225g rice linguini noodles ▶ 225g raw prawns peeled and deveined ▶ Kosher salt ▶ Freshly ground black pepper ▶ 1/4 cup plus 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce ▶ 225g snow peas, sliced on the diagonal ▶ 2 tbsp Canola oil

Method

1. Place rice linguine noodles in a large bowl and cover in hot water for 25 minutes, stirring with a fork frequently to break up any noodle clumps.

2. Rinse prawns and place on a paper towel lined plate. Pat dry and season with salt and pepper on both sides. Add prawns and 1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce to a container with a lid. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes and up to overnight.

3. Drain and rinse noodles and return to the bowl. Gather your ingredients (noodles, prawns, remaining 1/4 cup sweet chilli sauce, and snow peas) in bowls and place on a sheet tray next to the stove.

4. Heat a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon oil and swirl in pan to coat. When you see the first wisp of smoke, add prawns and cook until they begin to turn pink, 1 minute each side.

5. Make space in the middle of the pan, add remaining 1 tablespoon oil and sliced snow peas and cook 2 minutes. Add prepared noodles and ¼ cup of sweet chilli sauce. Continue to cook until noodles are coated and heated through, about 4 to 6 minutes. Serve immediately.

Sun shines on race day Golden Charles stormed home to win race 4 of the day, the Allan Holmes Racing QTIS Class 1 Handicap.

The Mareeba Turf Club was full of racing, fun and love at the weekend as the club held their Valentine’s Day race meet on Saturday, February 13.

With a special Valentine’s Day theme racegoers were seen donning red for the day out with many being accompanied by their significant other.

With live music, clear skies and a five-race card the day was enjoyed by many with special Valentine’s Day themed Fashions on the Field prizes.

Mareeba Turf Club President Alex Malliff said that it was a good day of racing for the 200 plus attendees.

“Because it was a pickup meeting we really didn’t know what to expect so we were fairly happy with the crowd,” he said.

“The track played really well the jockeys and trainers were all glowing in their reports on the conditions of the track.

“It was terrific everyone that was there seemed to have a really good time, we’re all really

happy with how it went.”

Race 1 on the day went to Tatachilla ridden by Emily Cass, Race 2 was won by I’m Princepee and Bonnie Thomson, Race 3 went to Tennessee Boy jockeyed by Wanderson D’Avila, Race 4 was Golden Charles and Jeffrey Felix while the last race went to Cousin Muscles and Bonnie Thomson.

Mareeba Turf Club will hold their next race meeting on Saturday, March 13.

Opening round of 2021 FFA Cup to kick off in March THE first weekend of March will see the opening round of the Men’s FFA Cup competition being played with teams battling it out for the top spot.

In a replay of the 2020 FNQ Premier League grand final the Mareeba Bulls will host the Edge Hill Tigers in the opening round on Friday, March 5.

On the same evening, the Douglas Dragons will travel to Trinity Beach to take on the Marlin Coast Rangers in the other match.

On Saturday, March 6 there is a triple header at Leichhardt with the Innisfail Cutters taking on the Stratford Dolphins in the opening round of the Ladies Kappa Super Cup competition.

The men will then go headto-head in the FFA Cup before the Leichhardt Lions host Southside Comets.

FNQ Football Zone Administrator Alex Srhoj is excited for the start of the 2021 season with the Pre-season FFA Cup Matches.

“We have spread the games over the weekend to give our football family the opportunity to soak in as much football action as possible,” he said.

“The big match is the Bulls vs Tigers, but it will be a tense night at Trinity Beach also.

“The exciting match of the round is the opening round of the first ever Ladies Kappa Super Cup with a great match up between the Innisfail Cutters and the Stratford Dolphins.”

sport TRC sports bursary now open TWO lucky students will have the chance to take home $650 as a part of Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) Sports Bursary.

The bursary is awarded to two student athletes and is to help them foot the costs associated with their sport.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti is encouraging young athletes to apply to help them on their sporting journeys.

“We’re encouraging local year 11 and 12 athletes to apply for this bursary to help with the costs of completing and developing their skills,” he said.

“Last year Akira Barlow and Brook Hunter received $650 each towards their sporting endeavours.”

Miss Barlow received international netball recognition for her role in the winning teams for the Constellation Cup in Malaysia and Gold Coast International Carnival in 2019.

Miss Hunter was involved in the Australian Outrigger Racing Association Regatta where she won three gold medals.

“We’re very proud to have supported these two young athletes and looking forward to the opportunity to support two more in 2021,” Cr Marti said.

THE Mareeba Wildcats Swimming Club just sent their biggest ever group of swimmers to compete in the 2021 Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Queensland Sprint Championships.

Out of the 25 qualified swimmers 17 were able to attend the championships that were held over the weekend at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.

This was not only the club’s largest group of swimmers they have ever been able to send away but also the largest group that coach June Cotter has ever been able to send away in her coaching career.

“I’m blown out of the water they worked really hard to get there,” she said.

“We’ve got a very proactive club committee and the parents have got behind the kids.”

Luck fell Atherton's way when Tommy Boorman won the toss and sent Norths into bat with Atherton's bowlers taking full advantage of the conditions.

Opening bowlers Seppe Barletta and Luke Parnell got the team off to a good start to have the home team reeling at 3-23 in the seventh over.

Seppe continued his good form with the ball taking two early wickets, completing his eight over spell 2-22, while Luke supported with 2-29.

Tom Boorman found something in the wicket and was rewarded with 4 wickets for 24 while Dan Parnell tied up the batsmen taking 1-29. Ever reliable Paul Nasser gave nothing away taking 1-15 off his eight over spell.

Atherton got off to a shaky start with their first five batsman falling for only 15 runs, a 57 run stand by ex-first grade player Dylan Pettingill got Atherton past Mareeba’s total in the 33rd over.

Seconds had better luck on Sunday as they traveled to Trinity Beach to face off against Barron, after losing the toss Mareeba was sent into bat on a soft and dangerous wicket.

Opener Jett Prien put on a display smashing his way to a top score of 78 off just 97 balls putting Mareeba in a good position.

With a total of 157 set Mareeba wanted to strike early and disrupt the Barron lineup.

Opening bowlers Tyson Brown and Ray Watkins took two and one wicket respectively setting the stage for the rest of the Mareeba attack.

Cheap wickets and a tight run out changed the game and Barron were back peddling as their order collapsed.

They never recovered and ended up all out for just 63 runs off 28.3 overs.

Mareeba Thirds will now go up against Barron at home while seconds play Doulgas in Port Douglas.
