IT’S A GIRL: New baby girl Caroline pictured with parents Glenn and Hitomi Snelling and big brother Ken.

Family celebrate first baby girl in 168 years A TOLGA family is celebrating the birth of its first baby girl in over a century and a half. When baby Caroline Mari Judith Snelling was born into the world on November 14, 2020 not only was she a welcome addition to Glen and Hitomi Snelling of Tolga, she was also the first girl to be born into the Snelling family in 168 years. Baby Caroline’s nearest

female relatives are her great aunts who were born in 1848 and 1852 and baby Caroline has now inherited their names. The Snelling family originated from Dorset in England and Caroline’s grandfather, who moved to Australia in 1967, now has three grandsons and one welcome granddaughter. Proud father Glen said that having a female in the family was a great addition.

“We have one boy and now one girl, to find another girl you have to go back to 1852,” he said. “As soon as we got the first scan to find out if it was a girl, the reaction was unbelievable. “My brother and I both spoke about seeing if we can break the record and have a girl, but he has two boys and I’ve now got one of each.” Baby Caroline is healthy, feeding well and putting on

weight but as for having a go for another girl all Glen could say was “It’s a little too early to say just yet, so I will just say maybe.” Glen and Hitomi also thanked the midwifes and medical staff at the Mareeba Hospital and also the helicopter crew and the emergency department at the Cairns Hospital for their tender care and professional support following Caroline’s birth.

Shows receive funding boost “People can put it down on their calendars for bigger and better 2021 Mareeba Rodeo” – Peter Brown, Mareeba Rodeo President –

SHOWTIME: Kylie Land and Leanne Thomas from the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society are excited to have received funding to support their costs from their cancelled 2020 Atherton Show.

BY RHYS THOMAS

AGRICULTURAL shows cancelled due to COVID-19 have received a slice of $34 million federal government funding to make sure they bounce back bigger and better next year. Six show associations across Far North Queensland were successful in receiving funding as part of the Supporting Agri-

cultural Shows and Field Days Program. Locally, the Mareeba Rodeo, Malanda Show and Atherton Show have all shared in the massive grant pool announced last week. All three of these events are widely looked forward too by not only locals but people from across Queensland and their cancellation in 2020 was a big blow to the local economy. $70,000 was awarded to the

Mareeba District Rodeo Association for the Mareeba Rodeo, $35,746 is going towards the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society for the Atherton Show and $28,189 will be received by the Malanda Pastoral, Agricultural and Industrial Society for the Malanda Show. President of the Mareeba District Rodeo Association, Peter Brown said that the money will go towards costing and up-

grades for the agricultural side of the rodeo. “Just to put that side of the show on costs a significant amount of money it actually costs us more than we make back for that part of the event,” he said. “A lot of the money will be used on putting the displays together and putting together some infrastructure. “We were one of the first or-

ganisations to get a full blown COVID plan so we could hold an event next week. “People can put it down on their calendars for bigger and better 2021 Mareeba Rodeo.” Treasurer and Event Manager from the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society Kylie Lang was excited to get the funding and use it to refund their expenses for their cancelled 2020 show. “The money will be used to recoup expenses from the cancelled 2020 Atherton Show,” she said. “It was awesome to receive this funding as it gave us that boost for what we needed. “This funding has been a massive help for all the show societies in keeping them going.” The Malanda Pastoral, Agricultural and Industrial Society will also be using the funding they received to cover their costs for their cancelled 2020 show. Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud and Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch announced the first payments under the program on December 3. “I am pleased to announce that 378 shows and field days including those across Far North

Queensland have been approved for funding to help ease cashflow pressures,” he said. “The Morrison Government is keen to ensure show societies and field day organisers are in the best shape possible to continue in 2021. “These events bring our families and farmers together, build community spirit and help bridge the divide between country and city.” Mr Entsch said shows and field days were uniquely Australian and provide huge economic spin-offs for local communities as well as opportunities for the businesses and services who exhibit. “They also help to keep maintain our farmers’ competitive edge by providing an outlet for new ideas, new technologies and new ways of working to be shared,” he said. “I am very pleased six show associations across our region are able to access this funding to help get them through this tough period and out the other side in a sound position to host again in 2021. “Next year is looking so much brighter and I know this support will be fantastic boost for our volunteers, families and school kids.”

Christmas grinches vandalise town trees CHRISTMAS grinches have hit towns across the region vandalising Christmas trees and wasting ratepayers money in repairs. Trees in Ravenshoe, Dimbulah, Atherton, Mareeba and Mount Garnet have all been damaged in the last week leaving Councils and locals with dampened spirits and costly repair bills. But one Tablelands town is fighting back. Ravenshoe locals woke up on Sunday morning, December 6 to find that the town Christmas tree had been vandalised with decorations smashed and strewn about the footpath and carpark. While dismayed, the tiny town was determined to not let the grinches win. Once word had gotten out about the vandalism, Bree Hargreaves from Tablelands Unite put the challenge out to locals to re-decorate the tree with spare baubles and decorations that they had at home. At the time Bree wrote on the Tablelands Unite Facebook page “What if all the local families wrote a message of love, hope, peace and their family name on a decoration from home and hung it on the tree?” she wrote. “A community decorated tree, let's turn this story into a happy ending. The tree will be looking great again in no time. They might think twice when they see their family and friends names up there. It could be the best looking tree in TRC.

Spread the Christmas cheer and drown out the grinches.” In no time at all locals like Nicola Barker had donated a box of baubles and placed it front of the tree with the instructions to grab a bauble, write your name with a message on it, hang it on the tree and take a photo and share it on social media using the hashtag #tablelandsunite. “We wanted to encourage locals to write a message about love or hope, just to try and get a bit of Christmas spirit back into the town,” Nicola said. “We have all had a rough year and we wanted to have a bit of fun and we hoped that if local family names were on the tree it would be a lot more valuable to the town.” More locals have since donated with more baubles and tinsel recently arriving. St Teresa's Primary School teacher, Justine McDonnell also got involved after she heard about the vandalism and donated some baubles to the box in front of the tree. “I wrote on a bauble from our family and attached it to the tree,” she said. “The tree is now looking great and it’s looking full again. “We want people to grab a bauble from the box and sign your name or write a Christmas message and put it on the tree. “It’s not just for locals. It’s also for tourists who are driving through. It’s for anyone who wants to spread some

Christmas cheer.” The news of the Ravenshoe tree was not an uncommon one with the Mount Garnet Christmas tree also damaged between November 28 and 29. The tree was wrecked and the lights were smashed. The Atherton Christmas tree was also damaged on Sunday, December 6. At the time Queensland Police said that they had found a backpacker climbing the tree and that the tree and decorations sustained some damage. Vandals also targeted The Christmas trees in Dimbulah and Mareeba multiple times this week. In Dimbulah, the Christmas tree was vandalised twice in two days after it was repaired by Council while the Mareeba Christmas tree has been targeted almost every night since it was erected on December 1. Mayor Angela Toppin said it was just simply unacceptable. “I am extremely upset that this keeps happening,” Cr Toppin said. “Not only is it disappointing for the communities, it also comes at quite a cost to the ratepayers to fix. “Council has made continuous attempts to fix the decorations however the materials and the tinsel is running short, making it impossible to keep repairing the damage. “Council will have no choice but to take the trees down if they continue to be

upset the Christmas spirit for the community.”

Economic snapshot highlights Mareeba

WINNERS: Managers Carol and Grant Daly from The Jackaroo Motel in Mareeba with their new Tripadvisor award.

MOVING AHEAD: Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President, Joe Moro with the new Economic Snapshot publication which is now available for businesses and the public.

A STRONG focus on community connection and moving forward for the future was highlighted at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Monday. The Chamber held a combined AGM and members Christmas party to coincide with the launch of their 2020/21 Economic Snapshot on Monday, December 7, at the Mareeba Leagues Club. As part of the AGM formalities, the election of the Executive Committee took place which saw Joe Moro return as President of one of the regions most active chambers for another year. “I enjoy doing it (President of the Chamber) and I’m happy to keep going as long as people want me to do it, but I’m also happy if someone else wants to have a go,” Mr Moro said. “I would be just as happy if someone tapped me on the

shoulder and said they wanted to have a go. “I think it would be good if someone else wanted to take on the job, but it’s up to them when they think the time is right.” The annual Economic Snapshot for Mareeba encompasses the last 12 months as well as looking forward into 2021. President Joe Moro said the new publication covers everything that has been happening in the Shire. “We take a look at the buy local campaign we did this year. We also take a look at tourism for the area, water security and also the new health project which is really going to hit the ground running in 2021,” he said. “There is going to be a real strong emphasis on securing better services across the town. “There’s also the good news story that is the industrial park and the airport.

“We also look into the Savannah in the round and the FNQ field days. The reason we do it is to sell everything that’s great in the Mareeba Shire. Mr Moro said the booklet was about promoting the Mareeba Shire and giving confidence to the business community. “It’s about saying yes, it’s been a tough year but these are the good things that are happening locally,” he said. “We also take a snapshot of what is happening into the future. “The publication is aimed at Mareeba businesses and anyone who is thinking of investing or moving to Mareeba. “We also give copies to politicians from down south and send copies to a lot of local enterprises.” The publication is available from selected outlets in Mareeba or email the Chamber at admin@mareebachamber.com.au

DESPITE a year of pandemic, border closures and bans on international travel one local motel is kicking goals and has had one of their best years in 2020. The Jackaroo Motel in Mareeba is not only running at nearly 90 per cent occupancy, but they recently won a ‘Travellers Choice’ award from global review site, Trip Advisor. The award places the motel in the top ten percent of motel accommodation worldwide, as per reviews on the Tripadvisor website. The award states that “Reviews from Tripadvisor travellers place this motel in the top 10 per cent worldwide.” Managers Carol and Grant Daly said they believe they won the award because once people stay they always come

back. “Our reviews are always about how clean our rooms are, how good the breakfast is, we are friendly people with comfortable rooms,” Carol said. “We get lots of corporate bookings and government departments staying with us and lots of families on their way to the gulf. “We also get a lot of Indigenous Australians travelling down from the cape who say they feel very welcome here.” All through the virus lockdown, the motel was popular with road workers and government departments visiting. Tripadvisor reviews give them an average of 4.5 stars from travellers and the book-

ings just keep on coming. “We currently have five staff working here and we are now looking for extra staff,” Carol said. “During COVID we got all our air conditioners flushed, we have new washing machines and we have just started renovating some of the rooms.” The motel is so popular that it is already booked out for Savannah in the Round and the FNQ field days in 2021. They’ve even started receiving bookings from overseas travellers for later in 2021 and there are six weddings already booked for next year. “Our 2021 is looking very optimistic,” Carol said.

Saving lives one endoscopy at a time

ONE YEAR: Robyn George (Nurse Unit Manager), Debra Whittaker (Nurse Practitioner Endoscopist) and Ross Clarksmith (Director of Nursing/Facility Manager Mareeba Hospital) celebrate the first year of the Mareeba Hospital Endoscopy service.

THE Mareeba Hospital endoscopy service celebrated one year of procedure delivery last month which has seen 389 Mareeba residents since opening in 2019. An endoscopy/colonoscopy allows endoscopists to see the lining of a patient’s oesophagus, stomach or colon. Mareeba Director of Nursing and Midwifery and Facility Manager, Ross Clarksmith, said that in the past year, the Mareeba service has detected five colorectal cancers and four upper gastrointestinal cancers. “We are certainly seeing a good use of the service here in Mareeba,” he said. “Due to the National Bowel

Cancer Screening expansion, demand for endoscopy services is growing across the state.” The Mareeba endoscopy service links in with referrals from the National Bowel Screening Program and referrals from GPs. Nurse Unit Manager Robyn George said that Mareeba residents had embraced the service. “Our patients have been very well prepared. Over 98% of them have followed the bowel preparation instructions, which exceeds the State target of 95%,” said Ms George. “The clinical team is led by Nurse Practitioner Debra Whittaker who is one of the first nurse practitioner endoscopists in Australia. “We also engage with Indigenous Liaison Officers (ILOs) from Mareeba Community Health as well as the private Mulungu health service to improve the experience of patients identifying as Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander.” Mr Clarksmith said the service helps to screen and diagnose gastrointestinal tract diseases such as cancers and abnormalities of the digestive tract. “If abnormal areas are seen, biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken for testing,” he said.

“Regular screening tests, such as colonoscopy, can help early detection and intervention before abnormal cells can develop into cancer. “This service means we can provide safe and sustainable care closer to home for Mareeba residents.” The endoscopy service opened the same time as the upgraded operating theatre which provides general surgery, dental surgery, and birthing services. The endoscopy services were also enhanced with the expanded Medical Imaging Department at the Mareeba Hospital in September 2020 which has new state-of-the-art CT scanner. “For our endoscopy patients, it means they get their scans locally and it helps clinicians diagnose illnesses more quickly and conveniently for the patient,” said Mr Clarksmith. “The enhanced services at Mareeba Hospital align with the Health Service strategy to increase the self-sufficiency of major rural sites.” Residents are encouraged to take part in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program or see their GP for advice. Eligible Australians from 50 to 74 years of age are sent a free, simple test that is done at home.

THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce is pushing for the rollout of high-speed fibre broadband to be accessible by Mareeba businesses. NBN Co’s Business Fibre Initiative is already accessible by businesses in Cairns and Port Douglas while Mareeba is currently left in the dark. Chamber President Joe Moro doesn’t want to see Mareeba businesses miss out on this opportunity for effective and highspeed internet. “This is a part of a $700 million Federal Government package to transform accessibility and affordability of businessgrade fibre,” he said. “Under the package there are enormous benefits for those businesses located in the Business Fibre Zone.”

The chamber is currently working with Federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter, to ensure Mareeba businesses don’t miss out. The COVID pandemic has forced businesses to adapt to a new way of operating especially in the digital technologies sector, so reliable and fast internet connections are essential. “The possible benefits to Mareeba from this latest technology are immeasurable,” Mr Moro said. “Reliable and cost effective connectivity is critical for our businesses to be able to compete in the digital age. “This type of connection allows business to adopt critical technological applications, putting them on a level playing field across the world.”

Rural brigade receives first ‘Light Attack’ fire truck THE Fassio Road Rural Fire Brigade has received their first fire truck in the form of a new prototype LandCruiser ‘Light Attack’ fire truck. The Fassio Road Rural Fire Brigade, near Mareeba, currently consists of 13 firefighters and 28 members with them all currently using slip on units to fight fires from their own personal vehicles as they had no official fire truck to use. Fassio Road Rural Fire Brigade First Officer, Timothy Lovell was over the moon for his brigade to receive their first official fire truck at a ceremony on Saturday, December 12. “Our brigade has been very active even though we lacked the proper equipment other fire

brigades had,” he said. “Receiving this firetruck means that as soon as we have manpower we can move rather than have to sort out vehicles.” This prototype vehicle was fully funded and built by the Rural Fire Brigades Association and is one of only eight fire trucks of its kind. The truck was specially designed by rural firefighters to fit their needs perfectly and features many performance and firefighting upgrades. The Fassio Road brigade also assist neighbouring rural fire brigades and some of the members formed a taskforce that went down south to fight the bushfires in late 2019.

The Fassio Road Rural Fire Brigade received their first ever firetruck on Saturday in the form of a prototype Landcruiser light attack vehicle.

Slow start to $6k relocation bonus ONLY 148 workers have taken up the Federal Government’s offer of a $6000 bonus to move to rural areas and help pick fruit. The Relocation Assistance Program offers eligible Australian workers up to $6000 to cover things like transport, accommodation and uniforms, provided the employee works a minimum of six weeks in a rural zone that is at least 90 minutes from their home. However, the latest figures from the Department of Employment provided to the ABC, show just 148 people have taken up the government’s offer in the first month, despite there being one million Australians currently looking for work. The Queensland State Government has also launched the similar Back to Work in Agriculture Incentive Scheme which offers workers who relocate up to $1,500 in rebates. Since launching nearly two months

ago this offer has only had one successful applicant with 30 people in the process of applying. The nation's horticulture industry is projecting a shortfall of 26,000 fruit and vegetable pickers this harvest season due to the shutting of international borders that has kept many working holidaymakers locked out. Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said cash incentives for Australian workers were only one part of the solution to the rural labour hire problem, and said states should be focussed on allowing more Pacific Islander workers into the country to help fill the gap. “We haven't relied on it (the relocation incentive scheme), we have made sure that we have had complementary measures to try and tackle this in any way we can with domestic supply as well as international supply of workers,” he said. “It's now really the re-

sponsibility of the states to bring Pacific Island workers in if we can't get Australians to undertake it. “The only impediment is the states, they have to work with industry to bring people in, and making sure they have the quarantine plans, because they wanted to own it.” General Manager of local recruitment agency QITE, Jillian Trout said it is too early to tell if the $6000 grant is working. “We are not going to know how many people have been paid, because you have to work for six weeks before you can get the money,” she said. “One of the criteria is that the six weeks have to be worked, so you can be registered but the money won’t be paid until the end of the six weeks as it’s based on a reimbursement model. “Since the announcement our workload has definitely gone up with more people enquiring about farm work in

the region. “We are getting lots of emails and phone calls about it every day. “In the past four weeks we have registered about 50 people, that’s for people who have just started work or some that will start in the next few weeks.” As for the projected shortfall of workers of the summer, Jillian says that if farmers are flexible and don’t leave their staffing arrangements to the last second, there should be enough workers to go around. “If famers can be flexible and not just insist on backpackers, then we are able to accommodate them.” she said. “Where we may run into some issues is if we get a call at 4pm on a Friday afternoon and they need 20 workers to start at 6am on Monday, then we may not be able to fulfil their needs. “The more time and prep that farmers can provide us, the more ability we have to source workers for them.”

Spreading Christmas cheer

Proud Lion for 50 years IN 1970 Tablelands resident Don Scheffler left Apex to join the Lions Club of Atherton and over the past 50 years Don has held the position of President and Secretary at Lions and is still a keen member of the club today. Last month Don was awarded the 50 year medal from the Australian Lions Foundation in recognition of his 50 years membership and dedicated service to Lions. Don said being part of the club for 50 years was an amazing and life changing experience. “Being in a service club, you join with likeminded people and as a group we can achieve amazing things,” he said. “It actually becomes a habit after a while and while my health is good I will continue to work with the Lions.” Don said over the past 50 years one of his highlights was helping to set up Meals on Wheels in Atherton. “We helped build the meals on wheels kitchen and also provided the vehicle and we have supported them every year since then,” he said. Not only has Don clocked

up 50 years with Atherton Lions, his dedication has been recognised with other notable awards like the James D Richardson Honour Award for community service in 1994, he was awarded life membership in 1998 and the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in 2017. Even though Don is 81

years old, he still goes to work most days at Central Tyre Service and he still helps out with fundraising for his beloved Lions, often sitting out front of Atherton Square selling raffle tickets. “While I’ve still got my marbles and my mobility it isn’t a problem.”

THE Salvation Army Christmas Appeal is well underway and the Atherton Tablelands Salvos are already distributing their Christmas hampers to families and individuals in need. Every year the Salvation Army gathers donations from the community that include; food, toys and vouchers to be distributed during December to those who need it most. With 2020 being a year like no other, the spread of Christmas cheer and hope is at the forefront of the Atherton Tablelands Salvos agenda. Tablelands Corps Leader Miriam Newton-Gentle believes that the most important thing to give out this appeal is hope. “The biggest thing this time is to give people hope, they need to see that someone cares for them and that they are not doing it alone,” she said. “We try to be in that position of hope and give people that assurance that they are not alone when things get tough. “The Salvation Army is also a religious organisation so we’d like to think that we are also giving people hope through faith.” The Yungaburra State School was a massive donator to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal this year with them donating over 750 food items to the appeal through a food drive. They then donated some of the food to the appeal during the Toy Drive that happened at the end of November.

Malanda Lionesses give back to locals

The Malanda Lioness club has donated the remainder of the clubs money back into the community, pictured is Malanda Lioness Club president Veronica English along with her fellow lioness Jeaine Doull.

THE Malanda Lioness Club decided to clear out the bank and donate all of their remaining money to charity organisations since the disbanding of Lioness clubs across Australia.

Due to the announcement that Lioness Clubs must cease operating, many clubs like the Malanda Lioness Club have decided to donate the remainder of their money that they secured

through fundraising. $8650 was shared between local schools, sporting clubs and other charity organisations with some donations reaching $2000. Malanda Lioness President Veronica English decided along with the rest of the Lionesses to donate back into the community that had given them so much. “We decided that we needed to give to locals and institutions that benefit locals,” she said. “We wanted locals to benefit as much as possible because the money had come from local people so we thought it only right the money be returned to the community. “The people have supported us for many years.” Leon Lorensen has been a Lioness for over 45 years and was even a Lions Lady before the Lioness clubs were even established. Mrs Lorensen was pushed to become a Lioness due to the appeal of the club and meeting and working with a group of likeminded women. “My fellow Lionesses and I had a great satisfaction in raising money and donating it to worthy causes,” she said. “With the club being disbanded I will now just be doing my usual social events. “It is very sad to see the end of such a successful club.”

Heather retires after 41 years in education BY RHYS THOMAS

Heather Martin celebrated her last day at Malanda State High School after 41 years of work and watching generations of students grow up in front of her very own eyes.

FROM teachers aid to admin officer Heather Martin has spent 41 years working at Malanda State High School (MSHS) without ever changing careers or schools and last Wednesday, December 9 she said her final farewells. Growing up on her parent’s dairy farm in Malanda, Heather started working at MSHS in 1979 as a teachers aid as a way to get money, since then she moved into the admin side of the school where she remained before her retirement. She has witnessed three generations pass through the school with her seeing a grandmother, mother and daughter all grow up in front of her own eyes.

When speaking about her time at MSHS Heather believed that out of all her time working there she couldn’t pick one special moment, as to her, they were all special. “I don’t know that I would put it down to one moment but seeing the progression of the students going through their lives is certainly special,” she said. “I will miss the people here and the friendships I have made the most.” Starting off as a part time teachers aid and only working 19 hours a week, Heather used her musical skills as an alternative source of income. As the years went by the hours at MSHS increased and the conditions changed and be-

fore long she found herself in a permanent fulltime position. “I was not planning to be here when I got a fulltime job but there were good things about the school and I like the work and the people and it’s not far from home so I stayed,” Heather said. “I have been very lucky in this office I have worked with a lot of good people who like to laugh all the time. “If you’re not happy at work there isn’t any point in being there and we laugh a lot here.” Since retiring Heather will now be turning her efforts to her hobby of crocheting and tending to her small vegetable garden at her home in Malanda while waiting for her chance to travel and see the rest of Australia.

where the separate ceremonies took place. CEO of Cornetts Supermarkets Graham Booysen feels that the award received by IGA Cooktown is well deserved. “It’s a fantastic recognition and reward for the amazing job they do in providing a great range of good quality meat to a remote community,” he said. “It’s a well-deserved award for the amazing work they do. “We never ever get complaints out of that store about anything to do with meat so the customers are very happy with

that department.” The meat department at IGA Cooktown has been described as consistently well stocked, in depth and with a width of range, ready to serve both locals and the seasonal traveller all being presented in an inviting and enticing manner. Herberton Twilight Christmas Markets SANTA made a grand entrance on Saturday night arriving via the Tinlander for the Herberton Twilight Christmas Markets on Saturday, December 12. While it looked like rain may dampen the night the weather held and the Herberton Twilight Christmas Markets went ahead with bagpipers, Santa, donkeys and fire engines. Senior Santa Helper Karen Rosman said there were twice as many people this year compared to last year’s event. “We were so happy how the event turned out, the weather was fantastic and the whole night had a real festive feel to it,” she said. “All the stall holders, vendors and shop owners said their takings were way up on last year’s event and everyone has only had praise for the event. “The highlight for me definitely was the Tablelands United Bagpipers marching up and down the street.” Instead of reindeer this year Santa arrived via the Tinlander and was later escorted around town on a fire truck. “Santa was a big this year hit along with his donkeys.” Karen said. “We had fantastic entertainment around the town with buskers and entertainment on the streets. “It was such a great way to end a tumultuous year, we can’t wait to do it again next year.”

Light up your home safely this festive season

THIS Christmas season people are being encouraged to ensure that their Christmas lights are up to standard and that they follow instructions as misuse can cause fires, electric shock or electrocution. People are encouraged to buy and use Australian-compliant lights as some products

from overseas may not meet Australian standards and can end up burning away your tree and your Christmas. Making sure your lights, old or new are undamaged is also essential and ensuring that they are turned off when going to bed at night. Safe outside lighting is

also a must with rain and wind so make sure the lights you want to use outside are for outside use. Doing all of these things will ensure that you can have a hassle free bright Christmas to enjoy with friends and family.

Queenslanders urged to lock up or lose it as car theft surges RACQ has warned Queenslanders to treat their car keys like cash as the State recorded a 15 percent in-

crease in car theft in the last year. 15,010 car thefts were reported in 2019-20, an increase of approximately

2000 on previous years. RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said even though Queenslanders were spending less time in their cars and more time at home right now, they shouldn’t get complacent. “It’s unfortunately really common for car thieves to steal vehicles from driveways, garages or while parked on the street,” Ms Ross said. “While we’re all using our cars less right now, it can make them an easy target for thieves as they sit idly in the street.” Ms Ross said the concerning increase in car theft really highlighted how Queenslanders need to take extra precautions to keep their vehicle safe. “It’s really concerning how commonplace vehicle theft has become and it’s really important that you treat your car keys like cash,” she said. “Never leave them in an easily accessible place

RACQ backs commitment for a second Bruce RACQ has welcomed Labor’s $200 million promise to build an inland alternative to the Bruce Highway and called on other parties and the Federal Government to support the commitment. Club spokesperson Paul Turner said for years RACQ had called on the State Government to develop an inland route, to provide a flood resilient freight network from south east Queensland to the far north. “The Bruce Highway is the backbone of Queensland, serving a population of more than 1.2 million people as either a local road, tourism highway or the main freight route across the State,” Mr

Turner said. “Activating an inland alternative freight route will provide Queensland’s supply chains with a safe and resilient substitute to the Bruce Highway by moving heavy vehicles off the existing network. “Travel times could be reduced by up to four hours if this road is built. There will be major improvements to productivity and with fewer trucks on the Bruce, a real safety benefit for all road users.” Mr Turner said the Bruce Highway was prone to being cut several times a year due to weather events which could cripple the north.

“During wet season we often see the Bruce cut by flood waters which is not only inconvenient for locals but also damages the transport network, halts freight and isolates communities,” he said. “An inland route will strengthen major supply chains, ensuring far north Queensland isn’t cut off during those inevitable extreme weather events. “We’d now like to see all parties and the Federal Government commit to delivering this project and give regional Queenslanders access to the safe, reliable and resilient infrastructure they deserve.”

Farmers encouraged to join Farm2Plate Exchange

First KP mango in THE first mango for The Express Newspaper’s KP (Kensington Pride) Mango Competition has been submitted. Now six years running the competition invites farmers either professional or backyarders to submit their biggest and heaviest KP mango for a chance to win $500. Last year’s winner was a monster 1.662kg mango from Sienna and Liam Avolio from Mareeba that was picked on their parent’s farm. The competition has only just begun so be sure to keep an eye on your mangos and follow the rules of the competition for

a chance to win a share of the $1000 prize pool. The rules are as follows, the mango must be Kensington Pride variety, it must be photographed on electronic scales clearly showing the weight and it must be viewed by a member of The Express Newspaper team or Joe Moro from FNQ Growers. The competition closes on Sunday, January 31 2021 so be sure to get your monster mangos in before the deadline. The Express office will be closed from December 22 and will re-open on January 6, 2021.

QUEENSLAND farmers looking to capitalise on the opportunities of agritourism are encouraged to attend the national agri-food networking event Farm2Plate Exchange which is happening from May 18-19 2021. Supported by the Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF), Farm2Plate Exchange is being held one hour west of the Gold Coast, and will provide a platform for idea exchange between people working in food, farming and agritourism throughout Australia. QFF CEO Dr Georgina Davis who is speaking at the event, said food, fibre and foliage experiences were being increasingly sought after as consumers desire to better understand where their produce comes from, learn how it is created and experience the environment where it is made. “Many of Queensland’s farmers are embracing new agri-

business ventures and agri-innovations which are adding value to their produce with a growing network of agri-processing occurring on-farm,” Dr Davis said. “The Farm2Plate Exchange will give farmers looking to diversify and take a more active role in the producer to consumer value chain an opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from others through a variety of insights and experience. “This year’s event has the theme of ‘renewal’ and is aligned with ideas of adaptation and resilience; we want people to think differently about how they approach the concept of farm to plate and the connection between agriculture and consumer, particularly in a regional context.” For more information about the Farm2Plate Exchange and to purchase your ticket, visit: www.regionality.com.au/farm2-plate-ex-2021

Tablelands tragic quad bike death ANOTHER tragic quad bike accident has led to the death of a Tablelands farmer and businessman. Chris Greenwood was a long time Tablelands resident and was also The Board Chairman of the Mareeba Saleyards, a role which he had held since 2015. According to Queensland Police Mr Greenwood was involved in a quad-bike accident on Saturday, December 5 on a private property at Walkamin at about 7.30am and was unfortunately located deceased. Mr Greenwood is being remembered as a trailblazer, a successful business man and family man. The Mareeba Saleyards

posted on social media on Monday. “It is with much sadness that I bring you the news of the passing of our Board Chairman, Chris Greenwood, who lost his life on Saturday morning in a tragic accident on his property at Walkamin,” they wrote. “Chris first joined the Saleyards Board in 2006, and was elected as only the 4th Board chairman in our 73 year history at the 2015 AGM – a position he retained and was re-elected to the day before his untimely death. “Chris will be remembered for his motivation for everything, forward thinking and enthusiasm and we thank him for his service and contribution

to our saleyards. May he rest in peace.” Chris’s mum Terry posted on social media “George and I are totally broken with the untimely accident of our first born,” she wrote. “However, the welfare of his wonderful three sons will give us the strength to continue, along with Miranda, and Kerryn their mother.” Mr Greenwood also operated Morganbury Meats, a wholesale meat supplier for many of the region's top restaurants and butcheries. He was heavily involved in both the cattle industry and Tablelands community, joining the Mareeba Saleyards board in 2006. Queensland Police are

currently preparing a report for the Coroner. As of December 7, 20 people, including three children, have died in quad bike-related accidents in Australia, compared to eight in the whole of last year. Quad bike accidents are the leading cause of death and severe injuries on Australian farms. Since 2011, 150 people have died from quad bike related accidents, 23 of whom have been children. In addition, six people present to hospital each day as a result of quad bike related injuries. 50 per cent of quad bike fatalities in 2020 have been located in Queensland.

CLUB NEWS Mareeba Lions recently sent a further 308 pair of used spectacles for recycling. These glasses are graded by a team of Volunteers, Participants from Work for the dole and Department of Community Services. This Gift of Sight, although it may be taken for granted by ourselves, means so much more to these people. Mareeba Lions recently made a donation of $250.00 from money raised at the Coles car park sausage sizzle to the Animal Refuge. The Saturday sausage sizzle is proving very popular with people enjoying the convenience of a tasty bite on the run. The Christmas Raffle is proving as popular as ever with a steady flow of tickets being sold. Christmas cakes and puddings have also been a big hit with some venues running out well ahead of schedule. For some year the Mareeba Lions have been supporters of the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. In 2021 an estimated 1,000 children and adolescents will be diagnosed with cancer and around 5,500 will be continuing their treatment. Our Save Mareeba Hospital Services Action Group welcome some communication at ground level in Mareeba with Health Minister Yvette D’Ath, Local Member of Parliament Cynthia Lui and other Health Officals ASAP to put a plan in place to fit out the Level 3 Mareeba District Hospital with the Di-

alysis Unit. Which is simply being played out by frustrating internal politics within Queensland Health and the obvious external politics of the Queensland Government who really are ignoring the data which pin points Mareeba with the most number of patients requiring this unit on the Atherton Tablelands which includes the Mareeba Local Government gazettes area? HISTORY Historical Society of Mareeba Hope you are looking forward to spending the festive season with your loved ones. Slowly we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Enjoy and take care. The Society has been chugging along trying to keep up the pace and slowly getting through the mounds of work that Covid-19 has created for us. Visitors to the area discovered a small grave yard that we knew nothing about. They even took photos for us so we did not have to make a special trip. Lovely people, we appreciate this gesture. Looking closely at the photos and consulting with others, we realised that these graves were a family pet cemetery. How wonderful people thought enough of their pets to give them a funeral and burial. This is at least the second pet cemetery the society has found in the Shire, headstones and all the trimmings. Just proves how life can be interesting and more knowledge can come your way. Anyone else have any other interesting discoveries? Contact us. The Mareeba Band display is looking great and recreates heaps of comments from visitors. Our mannequin ‘Cec’ greets all peoples and is

well looked upon. ‘Cec’ looks spiffy in the Mareeba Band’s uniform. Call on in and say ‘HI’. Over the past few days we have been donated a wonderful book pertaining to the Mt Mulligan disaster of 1921. The author has spent many hours in researching and finding many facts not well known. This book will be part of the Historical Society of Mareeba’s Mt Mulligan disaster photographical display which will take place in our rooms in September 2021. Just at present due to elections and re-shuffling of Cabinet we are not sure what the Minister of Mines will have planned to commemorate this sad event. We wait and see. Meanwhile the society is doing our usual filing, sorting, database work getting our many files organised so when people want to do some research we can find the information they need quickly. We have shared this information with Council, Mareeba’s as well as other businesses, JCU professors, school children, school teachers, genealogists, in fact just about every/anyone who wishes to be informed and search Mareeba Shire’s wonderful history. Helen Kindt (Hon Sec)

OPINION With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1

Are you really a Queenslander? IF anything has shown us the disparity between Far North Queensland and Southern Queensland it happened last Thursday, December 9. At around 2.30pm a truck rolled off the Kuranda Range and blocked traffic in both directions. With one simple mistake people who worked on the Tablelands and lived in Cairns (or vice versa) were cut off from each other. The road was blocked in both directions for over four hours and was then only opened to one lane for several more hours until the truck could be cleared. A road that has been spoken about for generations and by multiple governments still isn’t much better than when it was originally built. The other way home from the Tablelands is actually worse. On this particular night, hundreds if not thousands of people were trying to get up or down the Gillies. Which is just another goat track that is being attacked by band aid roadworks at every turn. On this particular night you also had to traverse the Gillies in appalling visibility and rain. It reminded me of capital city traffic as we crawled down the mountain bumper to bumper. The only difference is, if it was in the south east corner money would be thrown at it. To put it in perspective the Brisbane Cross City rail project is expected to cost around $5.4 billion dollars (wait for the blowout). There’s also the $163.3 million upgrade of the Deception Bay Road

Interchange and the Brisbane Metro, has skyrocketed in cost from $944 million to $1.2 billion. While all this money is being spent down south I noticed TMR engineers suspiciously inspecting the Barron River Bridge near Kuranda. Lately when I cross the Barron River bridge it’s still only one lane, even if there are no TMR staff on the bridge. Any day now we are expecting TMR to announce that the bridge has been downgraded to 25 tonnes, or even worse the bridge has to be closed indefinitely due to upgrades and repairs. Either way it will be devasting to businesses across the Tablelands. So while Queenslanders in Brisbane enjoy their new trains, we can’t even get a regular train for commuters between Cairns and Kuranda where there is already a tourist train running. During the recent state election there was lots of talk from all sides of politics about a new route to Cairns, all of that talk has amounted to nothing. It seems like we are stuck with a few goat tracks a second-rate bridge and some mute local members who only spring in action when there is an election on the horizon. Next time State of Origin is on and you yell QUUEEEEENNNNSLLANDERRRR at the television. Ask you yourself, are you really?

109 acres, executive home, creek frontage, mountain backdrop

IF you are looking for 100+ acres with an executive residence that's not too far from town, then look no further! Welcome to Lot 26 Lemontree Drive, in Mutchilba. Just over 30 minutes to Mareeba in an area called Oaky Creek Farms, Lot 26 Lemontree Drive is a predominantly flat, partially cleared, fenced allotment with bitumen road frontage, and the best thing, it has about 750m of the Oaky Creek running straight through it. The property has mains power connected, telephone access and of course water through a number of sources, with rainwater collection and tanks at the house, creek access and, there is a large dam as well as an equipped bore. The family home is an executive residence, with no expense spared. It features large living areas both inside and out, five great bedrooms with the master suite fit for a king and queen boasting its own walk-in wardrobe and deluxe ensuite, as well as a kitchen fit for a chef! And did I mention a back patio with mountain views that your friends will be jealous of for days.

All of the modern conveniences are here too. Just because you live on a rural block, don't think you'll have to live without everything that opens and shuts, like soft close drawers, stone benchtops in your kitchen, more storage than you can poke a stick at, tiled floors throughout, air-conditioning in every bedroom and the living area, pay TV and satellite internet... the list goes on. There is a large 5 bay shed that boasts 3.9m high walls, is over 17m wide and each bay is 9m long, giving a floor area of approximately 160m2, with two bays (approx. 64m2) enclosed and fully lockable. There is a large portion of the property which has been cleared and has previously been used to run cattle and horses. The Oaky Creek runs almost all year round at present, and in the dryer months is known to run under the surface with large pools staying Address: Price: Agent: Contact:

full almost permanently. Accessed from Springmount Rd, 22 km SW of Mareeba, the valley is 30 minutes from Mareeba or Atherton. The valley receives 900-1000 mm of rain per year and has a cooler and drier microclimate from the surrounding farmland reducing the effect of pests and disease on crops. Soils vary from clay loams to sandy loams well suited to a variety of broad acre and horticulture crops. Flat and almost all usable, properties like this don’t come on the market very often, particularly when they have such beautiful family homes constructed on them. When they do, they don’t last very long on the market either, so book your private inspection before it’s too late.

My Beautiful Mum The day we said goodbye My heart broke in two, I would give my life To have a few more moments with you. Nothing in the world, Will ever be the same, Without you Mum, Life is a meaningless game. Your smile, your voice, your touch, Mum I will miss you so much. Once again to hold on tight, Is my dream each and every night. Mum took with her a part of my heart, Her love she left for me to keep, So we will never be apart, The bond between us too deep. I will miss you a lifetime, And love you forever My Mum, My Best Friend, My Soul Mate.

Canoe club hosts competition Sailing siblings strike again Pictured is Jess Carlow who was awarded best technique at the recent junior training and competition held by The Dam Outrigger Canoe Club on Saturday, December 5

ON Saturday, December 5 The Dam Outrigger Canoe Club hosted a junior training and competition day at Tinaburra on Lake Tinaroo. The competition was attend-

ed by 15 juniors from Cairns, Flying Fish Point, Mission Beach and Tinaroo who all participated in the event. Sprint and distance races, paddle technique and flip train-

ing drills all featured during the training and competitions on the day. The Dam Outrigger Canoe Club Coach Ralph Seed was happy to get so many juniors

to the event and out on the water. “It was a fun day of activities,” he said. “As with many sports, this year has been disappointing as World Sprints were to be held in Hilo Hawaii in August and many of the participating junior paddlers qualified for this event. “This weekend was where they could test their hard earned skills get together and look forward to the next international competition.” Jess Carlow from Milla Milla was awarded the best technique and her brother Jaden Carlow and friend James Hunter from Malanda were awarded best in OC2 while Corey Roberts from Missions Beach was awarded most improved.

Community support continues for Nate’s family Breanne Wadley and her siblings Travis and Kristen all showed stellar performances at the recent Sail Brisbane Regatta in November.

THE Wadley’s have once again dominated the sailing scene with Kristen, Travis and Breanne Wadley all recently competing in the Sail Brisbane Regatta last month. The three siblings all managed to secure podium finishes keeping up their fine sailing

form, Breanne dominated the Open Skiff class winning all of her races while Travis who had outgrown the Laser 4.7 moved to the Laser Radial class where he won third place, Kristen won five out of her six races for the Laser 4.7 class winning the regatta for the second year running. Breanne then competed at the New South Wales Open Skiff State Championships the following week at Manly Sailing Club, coming away with the New South Wales State Title for the second year in a row. Roger Wadley the coach and father of the siblings said that he never gets sick of seeing his kids out on the water and sailing. “It’s fantastic to see and something you will always remember, before you know it they will be leaving home and doing it all themselves and I won’t be able to chase them around anymore,” he said. “I never get sick of watching them race and we train every week. “There is a lot of training happening but not a lot of regattas so it was good to see them use the skills they got from training.” Breanne has now set her eyes on the Victorian State Championships to be held in February 2021 followed by several national titles on the horizon.

Christmas races on again Georgia and Jessica Brettell were gifted the remainder of the donations and presents from Mareeba businesses following on from the donations made last week by Elliot Lovejoy from Triple M. The Mareeba Old Players (MOPS) along with Mareeba Gladiators representatives presented the girls with the remaining gifts on Saturday, December 12 at Mareeba Leagues Club.

Atherton win inaugural shield Mareeba seconds SATURDAY'S top of the table Cricket Far North clash between Atherton and Rovers at Atherton’s Loder Park had an added incentive with the teams contesting the inaugural Muoio-Ferguson shield. The shield celebrates the friendship and camaraderie between Atherton Life Member and honorary 12th man Anthony Muoio and Rovers Life Member and club stalwart Greg Ferguson. Rovers put Atherton in to bat first on what looked to be a bowler friendly wicket, and had the home team down 3-61 at the first drinks break. Paul Nasser and Chris Adams consolidated and got the team back on track with a 113 run partnership. Nasser's 73 off 108 and Adams 59 off 61 set the platform for a competitive team total of 8-247 after fifty overs. Seppe Barletta found some bounce in the wicket claiming

3-23 in his ten over opening spell, supported by Liam Bombardieri in restricting Rovers run-rate. Dan Parnell continued his good form with the ball claiming 3-37, Paul Nasser joined the party with 3-34 and Tom Boorman took 1-26. The old adage ‘catches win matches’ rang true with some spectacular catches taken turning the match in Atherton’s favour. Caleb Constant took two fulllength diving catches behind the stumps, Dan Parnell took a sharp diving catch in slips, Paul Nasser snatched one close in slips and Seppe Barletta got Rovers captain and dangerman with a onehanded grab above his head at short cover. A good all-round team effort saw Rovers bowled out for 135 to give Atherton a 112 run win. Atherton are away to Barron River at Crathern Oval this Saturday, December 19.

secure crushing Sunday win

Batsman Paul Nasser was again top scorer for Atherton with 73.

Atherton cricketers on the rise

Atherton cricketers Amy Hunter and Abby Toshack have been cutting a path through Queensland cricket with both the girls being selected and playing in high end representative teams and competitions.

TWO cricketers from the Atherton Cricket Club have been on the warpath with multiple se-

lections in several high class representative teams and playing in high end competitions.

Amy Hunter and Abby Toshack are Atherton junior cricketers that have recently

been away for representative duties with more still ahead before the end of the year. Amy plays in the junior Tier 3 side and the senior third grade sides for Atherton while Abby has graduated from junior cricket and plays in the senior third grade side. Amy recently returned from playing in the U15’s Sunshine Coast School Girls State Championships from which she was picked in the Queensland U15’s School Girls side and this coming weekend she is away competing in the U15’s Queensland Cricket State Championships. Amy’s father Lee Hunter says that he never gets tired of seeing his daughter out on the field playing cricket. “Amy has been playing cricket since she was around nine or ten,” he said. “I always watch her play whenever I can. “I enjoy watching not only her play but female cricket in general the skill level that is shown is just amazing.” In recent years Abby has been chosen for the Queensland

54 Main St, Atherton

Country Women in the National Country Championship playing with and against adult women cricketers. Unfortunately due to COVID the championships had been cancelled for this year but Abby also regularly travels down to Brisbane to play for the Sunshine Coast Scorchers in the Premier Women’s Division in Brisbane. Gary Toshack Abby’s father and teammate in Atherton says he looks forward to every weekend where he can play alongside his daughter. “She loves playing bat and ball sports and I’m a cricket tragic so she just went that way,” he said. “It’s wonderful to play with her and it’s unique to have a father daughter combination and we always try to outdo each other. “Watching Abby deal with being a female in a male dominated sport and being one of the first girls to play in the rep sides and she has handled it with absolute dignity.”

MAREEBA seconds had a crushing win over Cassowary Coast over the weekend to bring up their second win of the season. On an overcast day the visitors won the toss and decided to put themselves in to bat which proved to be a costly mistake with the opening barrage from Tyson Brown and Ben Jones drying up the runs and cracking open the top order. Cassowary Coast was in disarray barely making it past 50 runs before the drinks break with wickets falling like flies. The onslaught continued from Mareeba’s bowling attack with all bowlers securing a scalp save for one. Cassowary Coast was all out for 115 during the 36th over and Mareeba looked eager to close the gap on a promising game. Mareeba’s opening batsman Jett Prien made short work of the inconsistent Cassowary Coast bowling taking full advantage and making quick runs in the opening spells. He continued his good form poking holes in the field and putting up his half century well before drinks. After getting out on 60 after just 44 balls Captain Brendan Payne carried the torch and battered the bowlers hitting 23 off 14 with Jarrod France hitting the winning runs ending on 15 off 18. Mareeba passed Cassowary Coast’s score in the 20th over with an overwhelming victory. Mareeba Thirds played against Mulgrave on Saturday, however the game was drawn and called due to rain.
