IT’S TIME KENNEDY MP Bob Katter continues to push for the construction of a new two-lane dual carriage way between Mareeba and Cairns saying “It’s time for a new highway.”

Mr Katter and many locals discussed the need for the new highway during a

public rally at Centenary Park with all in agreeance the ambitious project needs to go ahead as soon as possible.

“This new road means it would only take 30 minutes to get from Mareeba to Cairns,” Mr Katter said.

“It is a complete no brainer that it

has to be built.

“The Kuranda Range road is a lovely tourist road, and continues to be, but it’s not fit to be a main carriageway with the amount of traffic it receives today.

“It’s a tourist road, which will always serve a purpose of being just that.

THREE Mareeba community groups have each been given $1,600 to go towards their community efforts and fundraising courtesy of the Mareeba Business Women’s Club (MBWC).

Last month the MBWC made the announcement that the club would disband and the remainder of the money in their account would be donated to local, likeminded community groups.

The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, Mareeba Meals on Wheels and the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation have all taken an equal share of the remaining MBWC account balance, making out at $1,600 for each group.

MBWC past president Stacey Shaw was the first president of the MBWC after it was re-established in 2017.

Mrs Shaw was saddened to see the club dissolve but found a sense of achievement knowing that the club had a positive

impact on the broader community.

“It’s sad to see the club fold but it is good we are able to give the money to other likeminded community groups,” she said.

“The club provided a space for likeminded women in business to get together and develop themselves.”

The money that was locally raised by the MBWC will remain local as the groups receiving the donation will put the money to good use for the

community.

Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation Board Member Robyn Boundy said that the money they have received will be used to purchase equipment for the Mareeba Hospital from their wish list.

“This money will be put to good use and that’s the important thing,” she said.

“It benefits the whole of the Mareeba community and will continue to grow our hospital.”

‘Blood will be spilt’: Katter

BY MICHAEL WARREN KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has issued a stern warning to Queensland Parliament declaring “blood will be spilt” if he does not receive a future grant to fasttrack the construction of a new 19km dual lane carriage highway that would directly link Mareeba and the wider Tablelands with Cairns.

In a poignant message to decision makers down south, Katter told the 40-strong crowd of farmers, transport workers, truck drivers, and other interested locals at Centenary Park in Mareeba that the ambitious proposal must

immediately go ahead.

“If this highway isn’t fast tracked for construction very soon there is going to be a lot of blood spilt,” he passionately told The Express.

“I happen to have a very strong position in Federal Parliament. At the moment you’ve got to get a design plan drawn up, and that takes time, I’ll give them that.

“But after that if I do not get a matching grant, I’m going to start getting very, very angry.

“How far I can go (to ensure I get the funding for the highway) I don’t know, but if they (Government) want to find

Under Katter’s proposal the new inland road would start along the Kennedy Highway, pass near the Clohesy River and end in the vicinity of Redlynch Valley.

Mr Katter has claimed on many occasions a one-way car journey from Mareeba to Cairns on the new dual lane highway would take no longer than 30 minutes and reduce a regular trip between the two locations by a staggering 35-45 minutes.

Katter’s comments come just days after the Department of Transport and

Main Roads allocated $1.6m for a study to investigate safety, capacity and efficiency improvements of travel routes between Cairns and the Tablelands.

“The purpose of the project is to review previous planning and determine the most appropriate focus for future planning activities,” Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey MP explained in recent written correspondence to local residents.

“When the project is finalized TMR will have a better understanding of the best way to improve (road) access between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands.”

Cynthia Lui backs collaborative approach to combat juvenile crime

BY MICHAEL WARREN COOK MP Cynthia Lui has again heard from fed up locals who have drawn a line in the sand and called for juvenile and youth led crime issues in Mareeba and the wider Tablelands to be immediately addressed.

During a short visit to Mareeba from her pop-up office Ms Lui again cited the State Government’s five-point plan and a joint effort by stakeholders as key measures to

manage the controversial issue.

The five-point plan includes making sure high-risk offenders do not receive bail and Police appealing decisions where needed.

A 24/7 Police strike team involving youth justice workers for high-risk offenders, culture-based rehabilitation and empowering local communities in the war on crime round out the Government’s five-point plan.

Other potential solutions identified by Queensland Police Union

president Ian Leavers to combat and prevent youth crime includes GPS tracking devices on juveniles, working with indigenous elders and co-response patrols with police and youth justice workers.

“We need to approach this from a holistic perspective, there is not one specific answer or way to stem juvenile crime,” Ms Lui said.

“It takes people from different organisations like housing, domestic violence, schools, education and health reaching out to vulnerable

families to engage them, to address areas of concern. “Juvenile or youth crime is not limited to just Mareeba or The Tablelands, it’s a whole of society problem.”

The region has been rocked in recent months by a series of crimes that reverberated right across Mareeba and the Tablelands.

Most notably, in January, a juvenile from The Tablelands allegedly stole four cars within a 24-hour period and was arrested three times in ten days.

Cook MP Cynthia Lui believes a collaborative approach is required to fix juvenile crime issues in Mareeba and across The Tablelands.

PRIME Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed Australia’s vaccine rollout plan has been modified to reduce risks of fatal blood clotting.

After receiving medical advice over potential blood clots in younger people Mr Morrison made an announcement to the nation about the vaccine rollout modification.

A Mareeba resident was scheduled to receive the first dose of the COVID vaccine last Friday, this was delayed by Cairns and Hinterlands Hospital and Health Service with no confirmed connection to the vaccine delay.

When asked about an update on the rollout timeline Mr Morrison said, “we have to take the time to assess the implications

for the program.”

“When we’ve done that we may be able to form a view,” he said.

“But I don’t think anyone should expect that anytime soon.

“It won’t stop the work that we’re doing in rolling out the vaccination program right now with the doses that we have.”

Engineer says bridge works way overdue

Kuranda’s Barron Ruver Bridge continues to cause debate with a leading engineer suggesting the aging structure has shown worrying signs of decay for many years.

BY MICHAEL WARREN A RENOWNED Australian engineer has revealed current integrity improvement works along Kuranda’s Barron River Bridge are long overdue after he first identified potential problem areas within the 60-year-old structure more than five years ago.

Malanda property owner Don Fry OA said a personal inspection of the bridge when he previously lived in the region led him to conclude the aging structure needed immediate attention – despite a guarantee

shear bonding between the concrete road path and steel girders.

“As I did not recall the tension bars being in the original design I contacted (TMR) in Cairns and suggested the integrity of the bridge was suspect and should be inspected immediately.

“Some weeks later I received a call to advise the bridge had recently been inspected and all was okay.”

A TMR spokesperson confirmed with The Express just days ago that workers continue to check 1000 individual welds on the bridge with around 150 to date, from a confirmed 300 completed checks, requiring repair.

As it stands, the bridge only remains open to one lane of traffic each way with works expected to continue into the coming months.

Meanwhile, a defiant Bob Katter has again suggested current repair works on the controversial bridge is a waste of time, the Federal MP instead publicly calling for the creation of a fast-tracked superhighway to connect Mareeba and the wider Tablelands with Cairns.

Katter’s proposed route would see drivers take the existing Kennedy Highway via Clohesy River and then straight towards Redlynch, a picturesque outer suburb of Cairns.

Katter claimed during a public rally in Mareeba just days ago the new road would take drivers a mere 30 minutes oneway to complete, knocking off around 35-40 minutes of the usual hour journey between the two locations.

will continue for at least the next five years Katter shook his head and replied, “I’m not surprised at all, particularly after the ridiculous delays we experienced over Easter time.”

Katter said the thousands of residents spread across the wider Tablelands deserved better, particularly when it is on part a main highway that services inland and regionally based Queenslanders.

“We have a permanent stop (and) go traffic light system for one of the main arterial roads in Queensland, it’s just ridiculous and quite frankly, embarrassing.”

Safety revamp set for Byrnes Street

MAREEBA residents have had their voices heard after TMR allocated money out of a $17.27 million program to upgrade five pedestrian crossings in Byrnes Street.

The funding comes after outcries of pedestrian safety following several traffic incidents on pedestrian crossings in Byrnes Street, specifically the crossing outside of the Post Office Centre.

This crossing will be undergoing the most important upgrade of the five crossings with signals being installed to inform

motorists of pedestrians crossing.

Mareeba Shire Council Deputy Mayor and Traffic Advisory Committee Chair Kevin Davies said that TMR has delivered on what was needed.

“We are happy with any money that is going to be spent in Mareeba for upgrades for our community and their safety,” he said.

“We have been given what we asked for plus a little more.

“They have listen to us and delivered.”

The crossings near ANZ and Hort Street will be raised and upgraded to wombat crossings

while the existing zebra crossing near Atherton Street will also be replaced with a wombat crossing.

A new wombat crossing will also be installed in the north end of the town near the roundabout and Lloyd Street.

Wombat crossings are small raised crossings roughly the size of a zebra crossing, however unlike zebra crossings pedestrians give way to traffic.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said these upgrades will improve pedestrian safety whilst crossing the road.

“I was approached by concerned community members

about pedestrian safety on Byrnes Street,” she said.

“After raising these concerns with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads it was agreed that these crossings would be upgraded.”

In addition to the pedestrian crossing upgrades four vehicle activated smiley face signs will be installed on the roads heading into Mareeba, these signs are aiming to make drivers actively aware of their speed and encourage them to slow down.

Works for the upgrades will begin at the end of April and are set to finish mid-2021, weather permitting.

Mt Molloy will host both a dawn and mid-morning service starting at 6:30am and 10:30am respectively. A march will precede the mid-morning service starting at Vains Park and ending at the cenotaph.

Malanda will start their dawn service at 4am in front of the Malanda Hotel before a mid-morning service at 9:45am.

Atherton will hold a dawn service at 4:30am before laying poppies at the Atherton War Memorial from 9:30am.

Paws walk to raise funds for RSPCA THE RSPCA's much-loved million paws walk returns next month and locals across Far North Queensland are again urged to get out and celebrate with their beloved pooches.

Because of COVID developments, the RSPCA will hold the million paws walk as both a physical and a virtual event where dog lovers will walk their pet for 30, 45 or 60 minutes a day throughout May to raise money for the RSPCA. As usual the paws walk will aim to celebrate our mutual love of animals while keeping owners and pets healthy and safe as they hit the pavement in their own backyards

and neighbourhoods.

“Much like last year, COVID restrictions have affected our ability to hold physical walks,” RSPCA Australia CEO Richard Mussell said.

“Even whilst actively practicing social distancing and maintaining good hygiene, it is still so important to actively entertain and exercise not only ourselves, but our pets.

“Events like the Million Paws Walk are even more crucial in such challenging times, as we depend on fundraising and donations to continue the lifesaving work that we do for all types of animals.”

Anglers asked for help THE Tableland Fish Stocking Society (TFSS) is looking to their biggest customers to help them keep track of fish numbers in Tinaroo Dam. Anglers are being encouraged to download a smartphone app and submit the species and length of their catches with an accompanying photo.

This information will be used by TFSS to help monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of their fish stocking program

while ensuring those secret spots stay secret.

Originally the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) would conduct a survey every two years and keep track of fish numbers in the dam, now due to funding constraints, that job has fallen onto the stocking societies.

TFSS Publicity Officer Laurie Wright said that without the assistance of their keen anglers, there could be a lot less fish to

catch.

“The downside from people not downloading this app and lodging their catches is that we may see a cut in the money we receive to stock the dam, meaning less fish to catch,” he said.

“We’re asking all the anglers and people who go to the dam to fish to download the app.

“We’re not looking for any secrets all we need to know is that the fish was caught in Lake Tinaroo.”

TFSS is not just looking for photos of your prize catches but your humble ones as well, recording and submitting your small fish captures are important in seeing the success of their stocking program.

Signage has been installed around the dam at various locations on the lakeshore and at most boat ramps, these signs have a scannable QR code for people to use to download the app.

Hon Bob Katter MP Federal Member for Kennedy Ditch the bridge, build the Track There was a lot of rage and anger at the public meeting and it is fairly clear that it is going to be many years before we see the stopand-go men removed from the Barron River bridge.

And yet, you’ve got 50,000 people trapped behind that bridge.

With the Bridle Track, we are talking about 20 minutes to Cairns instead of the hour that it takes now.

People keep saying that, “just go through Redlynch” because they reckon they will never get the money to tunnel through the range.

But that will add more congestion and disruption to the city.

What we must remember is that it is only a 1km tunnel as opposed to 30km of tunnel in Brisbane, a town with a population of 2.2 million and yet we have over 300,000 in the greater Cairns area and not an inch of tunnel.

In any event, we have the muscle power to get what we need.

But the reason I am confident in saying we can achieve this is because we have already been able to achieve $2,000 million for extended highways, dual lanes, and overpasses on the southern approaches to Cairns. I’ve got it before, I’m confident I can get it again.

And the other thing I am confident in saying is that there will be very serious trouble in Canberra if they haven’t matched the State’s $1.6 million for the engineering plans for the Bridle Track highway.

Why would we fool around with $600 million for a new bridge when that bridge is fine for light traffic and is part of a beautiful tourism road? Good planning says you don’t want heavy traffic and freight vehicles going down that highway. I’m the epitome of the antigreen but even I know that no-one wants to cut roads out of beautiful jungle.

Tablelands top Young Archies

BY ELLIE FINK YOUNG local artists Gemma Fink and Mabel Shaw have been recognised for their talents in portraiture at the Cairns Art Gallery’s Young Archie’s Exhibition.

The Young Archie’s stems from the Archibald Prize, a prestigious award that recognises portraiture from across all different skill sets and ideas.

The Young Archie’s then allows young people aged five to 18 to participate in a nationally recognised exhibition and begin their journey as professional artists.

10-year-old Mabel from Ravenshoe drew a self-portrait which placed as a finalist in the aged nine to 12 categories.

Mabel has been inspired by her artistic family her whole life and says she was very excited to be a finalist in this exhibition.

“I drew a picture of myself in three days to submit to the Young Archie’s in time,” she said.

“My mum showed me the exhibition and I really wanted to join in, “I really liked doing it and I am really happy to be the only one at my school to be in it.”

Meanwhile 15-year-old Gemma from Koah began drawing her piece ‘David Attenborough’ as a way to wind down and was highly commended in the exhibition.

“I wanted to draw something unique of someone I really idolise,” she said.

“David Attenborough is a good man, and he has inspired me through my life.

to finish off my pencilled artwork.”

Both Mabel and Gemma’s portraits were drawn with pencil and reflected their talents as aspiring artists.

Their artwork will be displayed in the Cairns Art Gallery until Sunday, May 2 with free entry. Bookings are essential and COVID-19 rules apply.

The Feast of the Three Saints It is with deep regret that the committee of the Feast of the Three Saints has made the difficult decision to cancel the feast again this year.

In lieu of holding the Feast of the Three Saints, which traditionally attracts up to 5,000 people, the committee will live stream a Solemn Mass on You Tube with a limited number of committee members in attendance and with COVID restrictions in place.

The Committee does not have the funds, manpower or infrastructure required to run the Feast within the guidelines set by Queensland Health.

On behalf of all members of the Three Saints Committee, President Alf Strano extends a sincere apology to all devotees who travel long distances, and from interstate.

It is hoped that the 2022 Feast of the Three Saints will be in safer circumstances.

Calves in training for Youth Camp THE Daley family took walking the dog to a whole new level, parading their three dairy heifers up the bitumen last Friday, in preparation for this week’s Malanda youth camp.

The Express discovered Terese (16 yrs old), Kimberly (15) and Matthew Daley (12) on the road outside their parents’ David and Tonia's dairy farm “Millaaview.”

They were training their two Jersey heifers Casino Donaria (eight months),) and Casino Fernleaf (six months) and 14 month old Freisan heifer Warrior Fiona how to be bomb proof when being led in the show ring.

With cars whizzing by and

some drivers pulling up for a chat the three young handlers were in complete control and their heifers didn't bat an eye at all the commotion going on in the world outside.

Terese, Kimberly and Matthew said they were really looking forward to the bi-annual All Breeds Dairy Youth Camp, which starts next Wednesday, especially as last year’s show was cancelled due to COVID. The camp, which these keen junior dairy farmers will be attending for the third time, focuses on judging, parading and clipping and culminates in the calf day on Saturday.

Kids art on show KIDS with a passion for art and climate change now have their work displayed in the Tableland Regional Gallery’s (TRC) ‘Now is the Time: Kids on Tour exhibition’.

The state-wide exhibition is a part of the Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Arts tour.

Councillor Peter Hodges says that TRC is very excited about the opportunity to be a part of a nationwide program.

“Council is delighted to be invited by the Queensland Art Gallery Gallery of Modern Art to be a part of this tour,” he said.

“The free interactive program coincides with the current Children’s Art Centre exhibition ‘Now is the Time’ by artist Raquel Ormella who uses textile, video and drawing to create art about environmental and social issues.

“As part of the program, young visitors to the exhibition are invited to speak up about environmental issues while enjoying hands-on activities.”

The free exhibition ends this Saturday, April 17 at the Tableland Regional Gallery with children under 12 years to be accompanied by an adult.

More trees at Lake Barrine

Rowena stars for charity MAREEBA’S fairest of them all Rowena Petersen is back home after competing at Miss World Australia, taking home the ‘Highest Queensland Fundraiser’ trophy after donating more than $7000.

All of her donations went towards Variety Australia, the children’s charity – a charity that allows children with illnesses and disabilities to receive the care they need.

Rowena said that without the compassion of Mareeba and surrounding communities she would have struggled greatly in her journey to the state finals.

“Initially the fundraising was my biggest challenge, however the Mareeba community was so supportive, and I am so grateful for these donations,” she said.

She used platforms such as Facebook to advertise her funding which had raised $7,845, as of April 9.

Although she did not make it to the national finals, Rowena said she was proud to have raised the amount she did for a good cause.

Now back in Mareeba and

continuing with day-to-day life as a travel agent, Rowena looked back on her experience at Miss World Australia with pride.

“I absolutely loved competing and the feeling was unreal,” she said.

“I gained so much confidence overall and the competition has encouraged me to get myself out there and seize every opportunity.

“I would certainly do it again and I have already looked at competitions like Miss World Australia to compete in.”

Rowena said that she encourages aspiring young Tableland’s women to participate next year if they get the chance.

“I would definitely recommend competing in Miss World Australia, you will not only gain so much confidence but you will be able to represent our small region with pride,” she said.

“I believe that this competition is a huge achievement for myself and anyone who gets involved.”

BY ELLIE FINK THE Rainforest Reserves Australia has replanted more than 100,000 trees in the Lake Barrine World Heritage rainforest as a way of rehabilitating local cassowary habitats and decreasing the effects of deforestation.

Rainforest Reserves Australia is an organisation with the goal to purchase, restore and protect rainforest habitats for the native wildlife in the nation.

The group of conservationists from Lake Barrine have purchased 100 acres of land in the area with more than 100,000 trees already planted.

After planting these trees, they then donate it back to QPS National Parks, so the newly planted rainforest and its little furry inhabitants are well protected.

Recently, Lake Barrine National Park was connected with Wooroonooran National Park which allows native wildlife such

The group has set a goal of revegetating another 100,000 trees in the area, with more planting currently underway.

Rainforest Reserve Australia’s President Carolyn Emms says that planting trees around Lake Barrine is very important to restore cassowary homes.

“It is so important that we take back land that used to be cassowary land and rebuild,” she said. “We are conservationists, we want to increase these corridors so that cassowaries can safely move around without the disruption of humans.

“Dehumanising cassowaries is our job and growing healthy cassowaries for the release back to the wild is our responsibility that we take very seriously.”

In the future, Carolyn says she wants to see more trees planted on farmland they have bought back and watch mother nature slowly bloom again.

Climate workshops head to Malanda

WHEN will it rain? It’s the question every producer wants the answer to.

Climatologist with the University of Southern Queensland’s Centre for Applied Climate Sciences, Dr Chelsea Jarvis, helped fellow experts, Bernie English and David Grant, deliver a Northern Australia Climate Program (NACP) workshop in Malanda recently.

The NACP, a partnership between the University of Southern Queensland, the Queensland Government and Meat and Livestock Australia Donor Company, is dedicated to communicating climate science and forecasts to the red meat industry across northern Australia.

Participants were guided through a range of forecasting information and techniques to

better equip them to determine when it was likely – or not – to rain.

“One of the main recommendations from the workshop, that aimed to provide producers with more clarity on how to use climate predictions, is to pay more attention to forecasts for dry conditions rather than wet conditions,” Dr Jarvis said.

“If you plan for dry conditions and it rains, you’re happy.

However, if you plan for rain and don’t get it, you can end up with too little pasture and too many cattle.

“Producers only have a limited amount of time to spend looking at forecasts, so learning which forecasts to prioritise can be a good solution.”

The ENSO - El Nino Southern Oscillation - is one of the most important climate phenomenon on Earth because of its ability to change the global atmospheric circulation which influences temperature and pre-

cipitation across the globe.

While it is a single climate phenomenon, it contains 3 states or phases - El Nino which is the warming of the sea surface temperatures, the La Nina, which is the cooling of those temperatures and the neutral phase. The temperature changes recorded occur in an 18 degree range, 9 degrees above and below zero.

Forecasters focus on the ENSO because they can often predict its arrival many seasons in advance of its strongest impacts on the weather and climate, arming farmers with a useful planning tool for making future property management decisions.

Workshop participant Anita Stoddart is a cattle producer with properties on the Tablelands and also near Croydon. Operating properties in 2 such different climatic environments only adds to the challenges involved.

Malanda's elevation of 732m above sea level and average an-

nual rainfall of 1174mm (47") is a far cry from Croydon's 116m elevation and 718mm (28.7") of precipitation from 48 days of rain mixed with 202 days of clear sunshine per year.

Croydon's average temperature range runs from 20.533.8% Celcius, while Malanda has an average annual temperature of 19.7 degrees. Mareeba falls somewhere in the middle of this range with its 400m elevation and 915mm (36") of rain over 55 days.

Clearly, one property management program could not be designed to fit these diverse range of climates.

“We can have the best wet season ever, but if it stops raining in March you can have problems getting your cattle through to the following wet season,” Ms Stoddart said.

“Learning about where to find and how to correctly interpret a seasonal forecast helps me know when I can expect the

rains to stop. This not only helps reduce my stress levels, but also improves my production outcomes.”

Millaa Millaa beef producer Brigitte Daley agreed. “The event workshop helped me gain knowledge about weather and climate that I have always wanted to learn.”

The workshop also included presentations from Queensland Government Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Senior Beef Extension Officer Bernie English (based in Mareeba) and David Grant from the Bureau of Meteorology’s Extreme Weather Prediction team.

NACP provides free workshops and one-on-one talks for red meat producers in northern Australia. It will also be featured at the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries booth at Beef Week 2021, held in Rockhampton from May 3-8, 2021.

relation to breeding and exhibiting cattle.

She said she hoped the Cattle Club offered a doorway into the dairy industry for young people who were interested in becoming involved but weren't sure where to start. Once included, there were no limit to the prospects that would be available.

Progressing through to involvement at state and federal level offered openings to work alongside breeders from across Australia and with other cattle breeds. Networking at events like International Dairy Week was a natural progression that could lead to inter-state and even international opportunities.

Much of the monies raised in the raffle would be used to support the bi-annual Educational Dairy Camp which will kick off at the Malanda show-grounds today, culminating in the Malanda All Breeds calf day on Saturday.

Just under 30 predominantly local youth are participating in this year's camp. Earlier preCOVID camps have attracted participants from South East Queensland, other southern states and even New Zealand.

Interested 10 - 17 year olds were invited to come along and gain new skills while mixing with industry people. Participants can bring their own calf from their farm or can nominate

a preferred breed and have a calf supplied for the camp.

Breed classifiers from as far afield as South Australia will be on hand to share their knowledge and experience on how to select a good dairy/show animal and how to exhibit cattle successfully in the show ring.

Like a mini show, the camp concentrates on the 3 core skills of showing cattle - judging, parading and clipping. Winners would be judged in their Junior, Intermediate and Senior agegroups.

Australian Illawarra Shorthorn breeders have long been recognised for their flair for stock breeding and their 'eye for a good beast.' They have been selecting the best specimens from multiple breeds since the dairy industry began in Australia in the 1840's.

The Australian Illawarra Shorthorn (AIS) breed was developed in Illawarra, New South Wales from the original shorthorns crossed with other imports such as the Ayrshire, Devon and milking Shorthorn varieties, resulting in 1 of the top ranking dairy breeds in Australia.

Known for their ease of calving, these medium framed cattle produce large quantities (in excess of 40 litres/day) of high butterfat (3.95%) and high protein (3.29%) milk, while exhibiting a good docile temperament for

milking and showing.

They are valued for their longevity, often still producing milk into their early teens and their high level of adaptability to a range of climatic conditions.

It was no wonder then, that James English and James Emerson decided to organise delivery of the first of the breed to the Tablelands to form the basis of their milking herds.

According to the Eacham Historical Society's “In the Shadow of Bartle Frere,” Pat-

rick English was in charge of a mob of 20 cows and one bull, from Mullimbimby, New South Wales, which came by ship from the Petrie Bight wharves, and was delivered to Atherton.

Bob Emerson, meanwhile, led a droving party which walked 560 head of dairy cattle all the way to Merragallan, just outside Malanda. A number of local dairy farmers still retain a percentage of AIS milkers in their dairy herds to this day.

Knuth issues blunt warning to State Government

MEMBER for Hill Shane Knuth is warning the state government there would be serious consequences if there was blanket legislation put in place on the control of recreational feral pig hunting, under the pretence of the recently announced review of the Queensland’s Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.

Mr Knuth expressed deep concerns about the over-reach of government into the private domain and fears the review is due to the recent case of where a Toowoomba woman was fined almost $5000 and charged with one count of unlawfully allowing an animal to injure another animal, after her two dogs bit and held a feral pig.

“The RSPCA has long campaigned against recreational pig dog hunting and I have grave concerns they are using this review as a mask to again push this agenda,” Mr Knuth said.

“If the state government decides to use this review to crack down on recreational pig hunting in regional Queensland, they will have a revolt on their hands and entire regional communities will be in uproar.

“It amazes me that the RSPCA would rather protect feral pigs than our native wildlife including emus, cassowaries and

turtles.

“Not only do they pose a threat to our native animals, but they spread disease and weeds, devastate crops, and cause massive soil degradation to our creeks and river systems.

“Recreational pig hunters are the last line of defence against an explosion in feral pig numbers, which would see widespread destruction of our farming industry and native flora and fauna.

“The state government should thank recreational pig hunters for controlling feral pigs in their own time and expense, rather than even considering changing the Act to penalise this valuable community service.”

Mr Knuth said the Queensland Government’s own website stated there were up to 24 million feral pigs in Australia and that they were among Queensland’s most widespread and damaging pest.

As part of the review 1080 baiting, transporting leashed dogs in the back of utes and making it law for vets to report animal welfare concerns will be assessed.

Community consultation for the review of the Animal Car and Protection Act 2001 is currently under way until midnight

Keep our lives previous I FEEL I have to respond to the letter in last week's Express from Brisbane-based campaigner Jos Hall regarding proposed "assisted dying" or Euthanasia laws due to be pushed through QLD Parliament this year.

It saddens me that when there is so much talk of keeping people safe, ending discrimination and stopping violence toward various oppressed groups, that the government would be entertaining a further erosion of the sanctity of human life.

Helping people with terminal illness to end their own suffering may sound like a good idea, but what it does in reality is put pressure on vulnerable people to kill themselves to avoid being a 'burden'.

Having been through the palliative care process with both my 6yr old daughter (cancer) and 77yr old father (Parkinson’s), I can relate to the desire to end suffering, but that is far outweighed by the preciousness of our loved ones - no matter how severe the illness.

When we make the leap to say a life is "not worth living" we bring a whole series of bad choices into play.

An elderly patient feels they are a burden, and would be 'doing the right thing' by ending it all - potentially being pressured by family members who aren't coping. (How can you protect against subtle societal pressure like that?).

A doctor feels pressured into over-emphasising the hopelessness to meet a threshold for 'terminal' - or is forced to break their hippocratic oath to end a life.

Loved ones take on the emotional burden of "Should they? Shouldn't they?"

Some bureaucrat makes decisions on mental condition thresholds - whose life can be ended and whose can't.

Then people push for younger people and less terminal conditions be included.

All of a sudden a young boy (or girl) with downs syndrome, or depression (or any

of a multitude of other conditions) is now a "burden" that can be "taken away".

This is a responsibility we as a society are not able to handle - please don't allow our politicians to be pressured into further reducing our humanity in the name of "feelings". Please stand up and keep our lives precious.

Mareeba history update Hello and welcome. I hope you enjoyed the Easter break and discovered heaps of Easter eggs. This is always a lovely time of the year when cooler nights and early morning are the norm. Makes it so much easier to work.

At the Society’s Rooms, work is continuing on at a great pace. Many documents are being scanned into the computer and saved in a simple format for others to access once it is completed.

These are Mareeba Shire Council documents donated to us many years ago and it’s only we have found the time and people willing to do this. By scanning these papers it also gives us much needed space, just so we can fill it back up again with other donations.

Speaking of donations, our book donations have been heavy at the moment, so come Mareeba Market Day there will be a great variety of second-hand books for sale at very cheap prices. Some of these books have never been opened, so are in pristine condition.

Come along and see for your selves. Lots of health, cook, garden, animal books, some with wonderful illustrations, good enough to put up on your walls. Check us out.

Mt Mulligan 100 year anniversary is a continuing exercise, gathering photos and information for the Society’s photographic display. Our whole building will be one huge display. When plans are finalised will tell you exactly when this will be opened.

At present, due to on and off Covid-19 restrictions etc, this may vary from time to time. The same applies to any commemorations being held at Mt Mulligan. It’s a wait and see situation. Many thanks to the people who have contacted us regarding this important event.

Meanwhile back at our Rooms, lots of sorting, filing, data base work is always on-going and we can do help with this. None of our work is hard, it’s constant but easy, and any assistance will be appreciated. Boiling it down it is mostly office type work at present. So, any takers?

New members are always welcome, cost to join is small. At present the only meeting being held is when the Committee meets. A general meeting will probably have to wait till when we get back to normal. That’s also a wait and see. A fairly regular newsletter is email or snail mailed out to members keeping them informed on happenings in the Society.

Ingredients

▶ 1 tbsp olive oil ▶ 1 onion, finely chopped ▶ 2 garlic cloves, crushed ▶ 120g chorizo, diced ▶ 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes ▶ 1 tsp caster sugar ▶ 600g fresh gnocchi ▶ 125g mozzarella ball, cut into chunks ▶ small bunch of basil, torn

Method

1. Heat the oil in a medium pan over a medium heatand fry the onion and garlic for 8-10 mins until soft.

2. Add the chorizo and fry for 5 mins more.

3. Tip in the tomatoes and sugar, and season. Bring to a simmer, then add the gnocchi and cook for 8 mins, stirring often, until soft.

4. Stir ¾ of the mozzarella and most of the basil through the gnocchi.

5. Divide the mixture between six ovenproof ramekins, or put in one baking dish. Top with the remaining mozzarella, then grill for 3 mins, or until the cheese is melted and golden.

6. Season, scatter over the remaining basil and serve with green salad.

The U11 Malanda Wasps out stung the Malanda Hornets 6-4 while the U12 match between Savage and the Eagles was secured by Savages 7-2 performance.

The Redbellies terminated the Terminators 10-3 in an outstanding U13 match up with Kai Hammond scoring two hat

tricks.

The U14 Ninja Knights had a massive upset match against the Amigos winning 12-7, the Ninja Knights had lost every game against the Amigos during the season but pulled through for their grand final matchup.

In the mixed matchup All 4 Fun proved they were there for more than fun as they whipped the Skeletors Matadors to a 7-1

defeat.

Hot Favourites put their pedal to the metal as they came out hard and fast against Howe FC in the mens match up, in what was a close game Hot Favourites eventually took away the win coming out on top with 5-4.

Manager of the Tableland Futsal Club Larry Crook said that it was a good night filled with fierce competition.

“It was a great night of futsal with some good quality as you expect out of a grand final,” he said.

“We had a couple of upsets during the night where some of the premier teams were knocked out.

“There were lots of supporters there on the night, friends, family and other players.”

A COMPOSED Stingray’s lineup led by captain Warren Thomson showed an undermanned Council outfit how to move the pill in their latest game before the Easter break.

Council was a man down and technically forfeited the round however a friendly game saw the likes of Christy Perks and Jerome Gully making menacing passes to the cup.

Gully put one behind the back that really should have had Cairns Taipans’ recruitment making calls.

Better still it was Thomson that threaded the perfect needle to Perks on a break earlier in the first half which had old timers speaking of the greats of decades gone by.

It sizzled past two defenders and sprung up off the floor into the lay-up stride of ever reliable Perks.

To their credit, Council did not roll over making a third quarter surge and showing they are not going away this season.

Craig Farley chipped in for a very handy 17 points. For the Ballers, Roby Mc leod was good for 14 before succumbing to leg cramps, while Dean Gallo remained energetic on the boards and was good for 11 points.

Rookie Peter Dipede had an exceptional third quarter defensively despite carrying four fouls over from the earlier terms.

After no basketball last week the courts will be filled again on Thursday.

Local girl stars at Stawell Gift

DIMBULAH sprinter Kayla Montagner has done herself and her community proud at the national final of Stawell Gift Women’s events over the Easter weekend placing first in the semi-finals and reaching a personal best.

The Stawell Gift has been running for 139 years in the small town of Stawell outside Melbourne. It has been dubbed Australia’s oldest and richest short distance running event.

The 23-year old has been running since Grade 10 at school, starting off in long distance running before transitioning to short distance sprints.

“I did like long distance, but I loved to go fast and often found myself catching up to the other racers, so I decided to see where short distance would take me,” she said.

Kayla participated in two different sprints at Stawell Gift 2021, making the semi-finals for both.

First the 70-metre race with her semi-final time being 8.685 seconds and the 120-metre race with her semi-final time being 14.108 seconds and final race time being 14.073.

Kayla came first in her semifinal races for both distances and came sixth overall in the 120-metre final.

Despite not taking home the win, Kayla managed to hit a personal best in one of her heats, sprinting 120-metres in 13.918 seconds, a challenge for sprinters to do.

handicap, a method used to allow the racers to finish at the same time based on their previous timings, making her overall racing distance 127 metres.

Kayla trained hard leading up to the event, with gym and sprinting on grass being her main priority.

She said that overall she is proud of her outcome and even smashed a personal best record.

“I felt amazing and terrified because the calibre of sprinters

was phenomenal,” she said.

“I am very happy considering the last time I raced I didn’t quite make it to the final, so when I won the semi-final, I was pretty happy.

“I broke a personal record in the 70-metre race and managed to get under the 14 second barrier which is pretty hard to do.”

Inspiring rural sprinters to follow in her foot steps is Kayla’s motive after coming home from Stawell.

“Most people just stop running after graduating high school as they think it’ll get them nowhere, but it can get you places like Stawell,” she said.

“I strongly encourage sprinters at school to get involved and keep motivated.”

Kayla is currently taking a break from the big competitions and only doing local races for the next few months to wind down from her recent exploits.

Roosters record 44-6 loss THE Atherton Roosters have fallen to their worst defeat in recent years after going down 44-6 to Cairns Brothers in Sunday’s round two Cairns District Rugby League premiership match at Williams Park.

Atherton are presently carrying a lot of injury concerns in all grades and went into Sundays match minus several of their regular first graders.

Most notable absentee is star forward Graham Clark Jnr who

will miss the rest of the year with a shoulder injury which requires surgery in the weeks ahead.

THE Mareeba Bulls have come flying out of the gate to start their 2021 season with both the Premier Mens and Ladies sides taking away their first wins of the season.

Hosting the Stratford Dolphins at home on Friday night the Ladies put on a scintillating performance putting them up to a 7-0 win.

After coming off an intense pre-season participating in the Kappa Cup the ladies were primed and ready for their season opener.

This was shown on the field as the ladies ran rings around their opponents, the score however does not tell the whole story according to coach Marcello Savaglio.

THE Mareeba Gladiators were faced with an incredibly physical and controversial face-off on Saturday night as they hosted the Mossman Sharks for their first home game of the season at Davies Park.

The crowd was vocal in their many objections to sendoffs as both the Mossman and Mareeba players got physical several times throughout the game.

The Gladiators opened the score within the first 10 minutes of the first half with Kurt Jackson punching a hole in the Mossman defense and sliding over the line giving Mareeba a good 6-0 lead with a successful conversion.

Soon afterwards came the first of many confrontations and stoppages in the match as Azariah Gutchen was flipped on his head in a heavy hit, the Mossman player responsible was sent off for the remainder of the game.
