Welcome to the world THE arrival of a new year baby is always a reason to celebrate. The Mareeba Hospital welcomed the first baby born on the Tablelands for 2021 when Huntley David Doyle Inkster was born at 10.24pm on Saturday, January 2.

Parents Emma Doyle and Branch Tscherednitschenko-Inkster from Cooya Beach welcomed their first child weighing in at 3620 grams.

New Mum Emma said she is now doing well after a marathon three day labour.

“I felt the first contractions on the Thursday but baby Huntley didn’t come into the world until late on Saturday,” she said.

“He was due to be born at January 1, but he decided to take his time.

“We are both ecstatic to now have him home; he is sleeping and feeding well.”

The family who live at Cooya Beach decided to give birth at Mareeba Hospital as that is where Emma works and had all her appointments.

“The staff at the Mareeba Hospital were just amazing, I’m so glad I chose to give birth there.”

The first baby born at the Atherton Hospital was a baby girl named Scarlet Naveah, to parents Graham and Kristina Haren of Malanda.

Scarlet is their second child and is a welcome little sister for big brother William. Scarlet was born on Sunday, January 3 at 4.30pm, weighing in at 3090 grams.

Dam speed limit reversed

2021 kicks off with a wet week

FOR the first week of 2021 locals across the Far North were battered with rainfall, heavy winds and flash flooding after ex-tropical cyclone Imogen struck the region.

Innisfail recorded the heaviest downfalls in the region, with 196mm at Saltwater Creek in the 24 hour period to 9am Wednesday, January 6.

Cairns recorded 127mm at the racecourse in 24 hours, while Tully Gorge received 118mm.

Looking at the whole week Mareeba had 290.40mm fall between 9am Friday, January 1 and Friday, January 8. The average amount of rainfall for Mareeba for the whole month of January is normally 209.8mm, meaning the monthly average rainfall figure was broken in less than one week. While in the first week of January 2020 Mareeba only received 9.4 mm of rain.

Atherton received 172mm for the first week of 2021, while in 2020 Atherton received no rain until the 9th day of 2020.

Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) Matt Marshall said the wet start wasn’t too unusual for this time of the year.

“The averages that we look at go back over 70 years, but there can be a lot of variation in that.

It’s not unusual to go above and below the averages by a large amount, especially in Far North Queensland where rainfall is very dependent on whether there is a cyclone around or not,” he said “Those rainfall numbers for the Tablelands for the first week of January are not that unusual considering there was an ex-tropical cyclone moving through.

“Going into this tropical cyclone season we did predict more cyclones due to La Nina.”

Mr Marshall said that being in a La Nina, Far North Queensland and the Tablelands can expect more rainfall.

“The wet weather will continue for the next week, with showers starting to ease,” he said.

“The general trend is for the rainfall to ease for the rest of this week.

“There still could be the odd thunderstorm but it will not be as wet as the first week of 2021.

“The effects of ex-tropical Cyclone Imogen will continue to weaken and we are not expecting any more cyclones for the next week or two.”

Three year-old Braxton Malfitana of Mareeba enjoyed jumping in puddles thanks to wet the start of 2021.

JUST before Christmas Sunwater and Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) announced that a six knot speed limit had been placed on parts of Lake Tinaroo.

But thanks to the extreme rainfall over the last week that decision has now been reversed.

On Friday, January 8, MSQ announced that the restricted speed limits had been lifted.

An MSQ spokesperson said. “Due to recent inflows to Tinaroo Falls Dam, the six-knot speed restriction enforced by MSQ will be lifted from Friday 8 January 2021,” The spokesperson said.

“We understand that Tinaroo Falls Dam is a popular place to visit for recreation and remind users to take care when on the water.

“The skipper of any vessel is primarily responsible for monitoring safe conditions and operating their vessel appropriately.

“Everyone enjoying the dam this summer should continue to check the signs, check conditions, check for hazards and stay aware of their surroundings.

“Sunwater will keep the community updated should there be any further changes to conditions at the dam.”

A Sunwater spokesperson said that it was important that all users adhere to speed limits for safety reasons.

“This includes 240 hectares of additional gazetted areas for boating activities recently reviewed and approved by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ),” The spokesperson said.

The new areas have been made available following a safe hazard reduction program which included tree cutting and an underwater survey to assess the extent of submerged hazards.

“Sunwater is asking anyone who visits Tinaroo Falls Dam for recreation purposes to take care,” The spokesperson said.

“Submerged objects such as tree branches, stumps, sharp rocks, loose or slippery rocks, sandbanks and debris are always present and can cause serious injury.

“Visitors should read signs, beware of hazards and stay aware of their surroundings so they can enjoy waterways safely.”

Have your say on parks and open spaces in the Mareeba Shire THERE is still time for residents of the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) to have their say about Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Strategy with their survey which started in December of 2020.

New exhibit showcases Ravenshoe WWII history A NEW exhibition covering Ravenshoe’s WWII history was opened in December 2020 by Tablelands Regional Councillor Annette Haydon.

The WWII exhibition has been created inside the Ravenshoe Visitor Centre and has many different WWII items and memorabilia that is area spe-

cific to Ravenshoe.

WWII was a significant period for many areas across the Tablelands and its mark can still be seen today with almost 40,000 troops being stationed on the Tablelands at one time.

Councillor Hayden was happy to open the exhibit as her family has personal ties to the

memorabilia that is being displayed.

“The display is especially important to me because my mother has shared my father’s uniform and other personal memorabilia,” she said.

“He was one of the many men from this area who served in Papua New Guinea.

“This small exhibit reminds the community and visitors about our history and provides an enduring link to our past.”

The visitor centre, located at 24 Moore St, Ravenshoe, is open seven days a week to allow locals and visitors alike to share in the history of Ravenshoe.

First RADF round of 2021 THE latest round of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) opened last Tuesday, January 5, for projects to be conducted between May 2021

This funding must be used

for art, cultural or heritage projects that meet the RADF objectives to build local cultural capacity, cultural innovation and community pride.

Mareeba Shire Council Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies said that this grant is great for community groups to get involved in to help foot some costs of running events.

“Community groups in the whole Shire, from Irvinebank to Chillagoe can apply for funding to help a community event,” he

said.

“Usually about 11 or 12 groups get funding out of each round of the RADF. “This fund has been around for as long as I have been on Council and even before that.”

REGIONAL Queenslanders looking to break into the housing market have received a much-needed extension to the State Government’s ‘regional home building boost grant’.

A direct appeal from Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto has resulted in the ‘regional home building boost grant’ to be extended past its original December 31 2020 cut off to March 31 2021.

Eligible applicants for the grant can redeem $5000 under it after they have made their purchase to offset their costs for building or buying their home.

Mr Dametto is pleased that the State Government has ex-

tended their grant to allow eligible Queenslanders to take advantage and get into the housing market.

“This is a great result for anyone considering purchasing a new home, unit, townhouse or substantially renovated home valued at less than $750,000 in regional Queensland,” he said.

“I had several constituents contact my office requesting that the grant be extended to allow them time to claim it and I thank the government for listening.

“This is a good initiative that offsets the costs of construction or purchase.”

Mr Dametto has stated that the rest of the KAP party and

himself would continue to fight for an expansion of the State’s existing $15,000 First Home Owners’ Grant criteria to existing homes in regional areas.

“There are thousands of Queenslanders outside of metropolitan areas who would stand to benefit from an expansion of the grant,” Mr Dametto said.

“Our plan would be to allow first home owners to use the current $15,000 First Home Owners’ Grant to purchase or renovate an existing, detached home under $300,000 in rural and regional Queensland.

“It would be a win-win for regional economies, jobs and future population growth.”

Katter calls for action on Barron Bridge KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has asked that traffic congestion caused by the failing Barron River Bridge be rectified as soon as possible.

“Having long lines of traffic at lights either side of the bridge, and a single lane with a 50.5 tonne weight restriction which started out as a 25 tonne limit is seriously affecting Tablelands and Cairns residents,” Mr Katter said.

“How long will it be before the original 25 tonne limit is restored because the bridge is not fixing itself and only getting worse with the large volume of traffic?

“I inspected the bridge last week from underneath and it is a massive structure that could cost up to $500 million to replace.”

Mr Katter said now is the time for the State Government and the local members to build a new Highway just past the Davies Creek Bridge.

“This new road alignment is dead straight for 16 kilometres and then winds down into Redlynch in Cairns,” he said.

“This road with a railway

line alongside would be much cheaper than trying to replace the Barron River Bridge and would take most traffic off the dangerous Kuranda Range.

“I find it strange that the three local Labor state members have been very silent about this issue before and after the state election.”

In response to a call from Mr Katter, the District Director of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Ross Hodgman said the department is carrying out inspections of the bridge and it would remain under one lane operation until these inspections are complete.

“The bridge is safe. The lane closure is a precautionary measure while our team of experts carry out their investigations,” Mr Hodgman stated in an email.

“Further action may be needed depending on the investigation outcomes.

A RECAP OF THE YEAR THAT WAS 2020 AND THE MAIN STORIES THAT FEATURED IN THE EXPRESS MARCH

JANUARY Well what a year 2020 was bushfires, pandemics, lockdowns, two elections and Lee Kernaghan.

We kicked off the year with the announcement that Savannah in the Round was going to take over Mareeba over the October long weekend. At the time promoters were expecting around 15,000 music fans to converage on Mareeba.

The Mt Carbine Tungsten mine also reopened and KUR-World was back in the news after the state government tied the hands of the Mareeba Shire Council with a TLPI. The local Council elections were also just around the corner with TRC Deputy Mayor throwing her hat into the ring and Nipper Brown put his hand up for the top Job at the MSC. We published figures that Mareeba was near the top the RSPCA’s shame list and we also published the ways you could help Australians who had been impacted by the bushfires.

In March we celebrated International women’s day and Cynthia Lui chaired a meeting of community leaders at the MSC on how to best tackle youth crime in Mareeba.

Two became three when Millstream local Ken Carey joined Rod Marti and Katrina Mellick in the race for the Mayors job at the TRC. Local Quad bike dealers were left worried after Polaris joined Yamaha and Honda announcing they were be pulling out of the Australian Quad bike market.

In our March 18 issue we published our first story mentioning the words “COVID-19” and we encouraged everyone to shop local.

We also broke the news that the first case of COVID on the Tablelands had been discovered in Atherton.

Joe Paronella and Tom Gilmore spent their last few days in the top job as Mayor of the TRC and MSC respectively.

Coming off the back of the news that Mareeba is the second most romantic town in Australia, Shani and Jarod Wiggins believe that love really is in the air in Mareeba.

“Jarod was one of my brother’s friends growing up, so he was always around. I moved away to the Cairns northern beaches for a while and when I came back we just rekindled our friendship which led to love in our late 20’s. Now we have two beautiful daughters, Ava and Reese,” said Shani.

“We chose to get married on our own rural property in September last year at sunset – making for very romantic setting.”

Shani believes that Mareeba is romantic. “There’s just so many quiet places around here that you can just sit and chat and get to know somebody.”

With Valentine’s Day this Friday, Shani and Jarod are planning on staying home.

“Our Valentine’s Day plan is to have quiet dinner at home with a few beers.”

Mareeba was voted second most romantic place in Australia from data collected from sales from the Lovehoney website – to see the full story turn to page 5.

The data which was collected by the Lovehoney website claimed that Mareeba was one of their biggest areas for sales.

The TRC held their first ordinary council meeting with Mayor Rod Marti taking the unusual step of presenting a Mayoral Minute and the motion from Mayor Marti was to “begin reducing costs and pulling back on expenditure.”

Local Roadwork’s stepped up another gear, with major roadwork’s starting on the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Kuranda.

MSF Sugar was under attack from all sides of politics when first they announced they would not be fulfilling local orders for 2020 and then when they reversed that decision they announced they would be selling molasses about 250 a tonne, about $100 a tonne more than 2019.

Tablelands resident Andrew Radke got so sick of bad internet he decided to start his very own internet wireless provider, supplying cheap internet to people in NBN black spots.

Rod Marti and Angela Toppin were announced as the new Mayors of the TRC and MSC respectively.

Mareeba entrepreneur Angela Nason started helping out a few local farmers by delivering fruit to residents who didn’t want to leave the house. Those first few deliveries snowballed into the major operation that is now Tablelands to Tabletop.

The full cast for the new movie “Lindy Lou” which begins filming in Mareeba this week.

New local film to start shooting IT will be a case of lights, camera and action in Mareeba this Friday when a group of locals start filming a new dark comedy drama film.

The movie has gotten off the ground thanks to a grant of $10,000 by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) and filming is due to start on January 15.

The film will be shot locally in Mareeba and Cairns using local talent and local crew members.

The short film, Lindy Lou, has been written by Mareeba local Lisa Bertoldo who will also star and produce the movie.

Lisa said the dark comedy drama will have a distinctive Far North Queensland flavour encompassing rural landscapes to social issues amongst the community.

“The 35 minute short film and TV pilot will be based in and around Mareeba focusing on a local family and it will be very Far North Queensland based.” Lisa said.

“It has a very dry sense of humour.”

Lisa said the movie takes place after a tragedy and slowly over time you find out what the tragedy is and you also find out about Lindy and her family.

“Most of the cast is sorted and all the cast and crew are Cairns and Mareeba based,” she said.

“Now we are just rehearsing and getting costumes and props underway.

“We have a very talented local cast and crew.”

Along with Lisa Bertoldo other local actors will include Oliver Vergari, Anthony Ring, Andy Gamble, Peta Cooke, Peter Merril, Daryl Heath, Dell Beckham and Drew Brauer .

AS the upcoming cyclone season approaches the Ravenshoe SES is now looking for volunteers to help fill their ranks.

The SES is open to anyone aged from 16 and up and anyone who is able to spare a few hours helping.

Ivan Evans who is the SES Ravenshoe group leader said that they had recently been busy helping to find missing people in bushland.

“We have been called out

about four times in the last year to scour through bushland helping to find missing people,” he said.

This year we are also looking at upgrading our equipment so we are going to be very busy.

“Anyone who is fit and able can join the SES. “Lots of people think you have to be retired to join the local SES, that’s not true it’s open to anyone from the age of 16 years and up.

“We are looking for people from all ages and backgrounds to join, lend a hand a become part of the community.”

A recruitment and information session is taking place at 12-6 Theta Street in Ravenshoe inside the SES and fire station building on January 19 from 7pm to 9pm.

New project to help endangered northern bettong in Mareeba The endangered northern bettong, which is only found around the Mareeba area.

THE Wet Tropics’ endangered northern bettong will now be better protected thanks to a new project that was announced last month.

With only an estimated 1000 northern bettongs remaining, Far Northerners are banding together to help the elusive marsupial which is only found around the Tablelands and is known for its love of native truffles.

The $170,000 project, funded by the Australian Government, aims to improve habitat for northern bettongs outside of national park land.

Terrain NRM said activities would include cool burns by traditional owners in northern bettong habitat and work with

landholders on land management practices in potential bettong areas.

Terrain NRM will also be working with the Northern Bettong Recovery Team including James Cook University researchers, Queensland Parks and Wildlife officers, the World Wildlife Fund, Bush Heritage and the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

Recovery Team Chair Sandra Abell said the project “filled a gap” in the recovery of this species.

“The focus has largely been on protected areas like in national parks,’’ Dr Abell said. “Getting landowners involved will be a huge step towards potentially

increasing bettong habitat.”

She said the northern bettong population had dramatically declined over the past 20 to 30 years. The only known populations now were in the Lamb Range and Mt Spurgeon areas.

“Their habitat is very restricted – in some places it is only 6km wide,’’ she said. “Bettongs need cockatoo grass, especially in the dry season, and activities like cool burns help to stop woodlands from thickening and maintain grassy understoreys.”

A Terrain NRM spokesperson said that the Bettongs mainly feed on truffles, which grow underground, connected to the roots of large trees “They rest through the day on nests made of grass, leaves and bark, which they carry to the nest site in their tail,” they said.

“They help the forest by spreading the spores of truffles around with their droppings.

“They make spit balls out of undigested grass and these help researchers to track their movements.”

The new project is supported

by Terrain NRM through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Funding boost for Mining collection

HERBERTON’S Mining Museum has received just over $5000 from the National Library of Australia’s Community Heritage Grants.

Tablelands Regional Councillor Annette Haydon said the money will be used to conduct a significance assessment of the museum’s collection, focusing on original materials, machinery, archives and items that relate specifically to the Great Northern Mine.

“This will give us greater clarity around the meaning and value of our collection, and provide context for its management, interpretation, preservation and presentation,” Cr Haydon said.

“It will also identify any gaps in our collection management procedures, which, in conjunction with our collections policy, can help us be more strategic and informed in our collecting practices.”

“Dr Janice Wegner, Senior Lecturer at James Cook University, will be conducting the assessment and we are fortunate to be benefitting from her extensive experience and knowledge of North Queensland mining history.”

Cr Haydon pointed out that the grant recognises the importance of the collection and is a testament to the dedication of the volunteers at the centre.

“The volunteers recently completed a series of collection management training workshops that included collection policy, acquisitions, cataloguing, numbering objects, preventative conservation and storage reviews,” Cr Haydon said.

“These workshops were also funded by a Community Heritage Grant.

“This grant will further increase their knowledge and enhance the value of the museum collection and the history it protects.”

It’s expected that the assessment will commence at the end of February and take about a week to complete.

Our pets are important members of our family. While they bring joy and companionship to the home, they are a big responsibility and you must ensure your pets do not cause a nuisance, injury or health hazard.

Registration & Microchipping

All dogs in our region, regardless of where they are kept, must be registered.

All cats and dogs over 12-weeks-old must be microchipped. Registering and microchipping is the best way to ensure animals are reunited with their owners.

Atherton Dog Park

The off-leash dog path, next to the Hou Wang Chinese Temple on Atherton-Herberton Road, is dedicated to fun and exercise activities for you and your dog. Several basic rules apply to the park.

•

Dogs may run off leash if they remain under voice control and within the confines of the fenced area.

•

Owners must remain within the park boundary and have a leash ready.

•

Dogs must not jump on or harass other dogs and people.

•

Collect dog waste.

• Children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.

We use lifetime tags and registrations are due for payment on 30 June each year.

•

Dog Breeding

If you sell, advertise or give away a dog, you must have a breeder’s identification number from qdbr.daf.qld.gov.au.

If your dog has a litter you must meet the animal welfare standards for breeding dogs and their progeny. Within 28 days of the litter being born, you must register as a dog breeder at qdbr.daf.qld.gov.au.

Barking & Howling

Dogs tend to bark and howl for a reason — if they are tied up, hungry, thirsty, bored, sick, longely, neglected or being provoked. If someone’s dog is barking or howling, keep a record of the dates and times and then speak with the owner (they may not know!). If the problem persists for more than two weeks, reapproach the owner. If the owner is not willing to address the problem, get in touch with us for further advice. Addressing barking and howling dogs can be a long process that may take some months to resolve.

Desexing

Desexing your pets prevents unwanted pregnancies and may also protect your animlas from certain illnesses. Desexed animals often roam less.

Problem Cats

If you are having problems with a cat, try to identify the owner and raise your concerns. In most cases this is all that it takes to resolve the situation. If you don’t know the owner, or the owner is unapproachable, buy or borrow a trap and let us know when to come and pick the cat up.

Dog-Safe

Your dog is your responsibility and there are a few important things that can ensure our community is safe.

•

Always supervise children around dogs. Dog play can be rough and may result in a bite.

•

Keep children away from a dog if it is sleeping, eating or recovering from an illness or injury.

•

Ensure your fencing and enclosures are secure.

•

Use a leash when walking your dog and make sure you are in control of the situatuion.

New biopesticide to help in fight against fall armyworm THE Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has received approval to import a biopesticide for research purposes, marking a significant step in the fight to combat Fall armyworm (FAW).

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) approval to import Fawligen® meant the Queensland Government could start working on management packages for impacted industries.

“Since the initial detection of FAW in Australia in January 2020, DAF has worked closely with industry to find ways to address the threat posed by this voracious invasive pest to Queensland’s agriculture industry,” Mr Furner said.

“Fawligen® is a biopesticide targeting the FAW caterpillar which ingests virus particles, becomes infected and dies, spread-

ing the virus to other FAW larvae in the crop.

“DAF first applied in March 2020 to bring Fawligen®, which is produced in the US by Australian company AgBiTech, into Australia.

“Getting DAWE’s approval to import Fawligen®, a naturally occurring caterpillar virus which targets FAW, is a key step forward as it has the potential to be a game changer for producers.”

Mr Furner said having access to Fawligen® would allow DAF researchers to immediately commence small scale work with AgBiTech to assess its performance on FAW populations, under local conditions and in various crops.

“This will generate information for an Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Authority (APVMA) regulatory submission,” Mr Furner said.

“Natural biological control agents, like Fawligen®, reduce grower reliance on conventional insecticides for FAW control, reducing the risk of insecticide

resistance development.

“Another significant advantage of this biopesticide is that it only kills the FAW and is nontoxic to beneficial organisms including honeybees and beneficial natural enemies such as spiders, wasps and ladybeetles.”

AgBiTech’s General Manager for Australia, Philip Armytage, said in response to the spread and rise of FAW as a global pest, in 2015 AgBiTech established a production facility in the US to manufacture Fawligen® for Brazil and other global markets.

“At the time, Fawligen® could not be produced in Australia as the FAW was not present,” Mr Armytage said.

“Globally, Fawligen® is AgBiTech’s biggest product by volume, and we are excited to be able to bring our technology back home to Australia for our farmers.

“We will accelerate the project, working closely with DAF and use all our international

experience to support the commencement of the registration work as soon as possible.”

Mr Furner said DAF had a long history of working closely with AgBiTech in supporting the development of the Helicoverpa biocontrol ViVUS Max® in the early 2000s.

“Australia is the global leader in the use of native and introduced biocontrol agents,” he said.

“We have seen excellent results in the control of similar caterpillar pests such as Helicoverpa as well as with silverleaf whitefly and prickly pear.

“In the meantime, growers should remain vigilant for the presence of FAW and check for the latest insecticide permits applying to fall armyworm using the APVMA’s permit portal.”

The latest advice about the impacts and management of fall armyworm on key crops can be found on the fall armyworm web page at business.qld.gov.au/fallarmyworm.

KP Mango Comp still alive LOCAL Mango growers have until the end of January to submit their entries for the annual biggest KP Mango Competition. $500 for first place is up for grabs while second and third will receive $300 and $200 respectively.

The 2020 mango season has been quite lean compared to previous seasons but the new year and the extra rain across the regions may fatten some of the last remaining KP’s to clinch one of the top three places.

The latest entry was submitted by Joe Moro weighing in at 1.142KG (pictured) while Weston Hilditch from Dimbulah is holding on to second place with his 1.059KG specimen.

Unfortunately Mr Moro is unable to participate in the competition due to his Presidency of FNQ Grow-

ers, one of the sponsors of the competition together with Lindsay Rural, Lindsay Transport and The Express Newspaper.

He is however encouraging mango growers and anyone who has a mango tree in their back yard to submit an entry.

The competition will end on January 31, 2021 and locals are encouraged to get their entries in ASAP.

Rabobank releases Global Sugar quarterly report A GLOBAL sugar deficit of 0.3 million metric tonnes raw value (mtrv) is being projected for 2020/21 in Rabobank’s latest Global Sugar Quarterly report.

In its Q4 2020 report, the specialist agribusiness bank forecasts the deficit despite an expected increase in world-wide sugar production, which, it says, will be offset by a projected 1.7 per cent year-on-year recovery in global consumption.

This follows an estimated 1.8 million mtrv global sugar surplus recorded for the 2019/20 (October – September) season.

Rabobank commodity analyst Charles Clack says production increases are particularly expected this season in China, India and Pakistan, and also in North America, as crops there recover from recent years of drought.

“At the same time though, we expect a recovery in global sugar consumption from last year’s rates which were hit by the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. That said, our consumption forecasts for 2020/21 have been tempered slightly, given the second wave that is

occurring in many parts of the world,” he said.

For Australia, the report says, the country’s 2020 sugar crush – which ended in early December – would result in cane volumes of just over 31 million metric tonnes (mmt) – up four per cent on the previous year. Actual sugar output is expected to total more than 4.3 mmt for the season.

The onset of a La Nina will prove an advantage for the Australian sugar-growing season ahead, with forecast strong rainfall to assist cane development

and, ultimately, 2021 yields, Mr Clack said.

In further good news, the report expects limited impact on Australian sugar exports as a result of Chinese trade friction, with China accounting for only 5.6 per cent of Australian sugar exports, on average, over the past five years.

Area in Australia planted to cane remains under pressure – falling an estimated three per cent year on year in the 2020/21 crop year and 10 per cent since 2016/17.

Stop the traffic jams SADLY one of the few problems that many of us have not experienced since moving from larger, busier places has found us here on the Tablelands. And that is traffic.

Yes, we are seemingly no longer immune to traveling through the main street of Atherton without being part of bumper-to-bumper driving.

Now I know that it is not a particularly long street and the couple of extra minutes is rather unimportant to most of us, but it can become stretched when many drivers simply don't obey the rules.

I am talking about queuing across intersections. If a string of vehicles are bumper to bumper across the intersection and someone wants to make a turn there and is faced by an unbroken line of traffic, then traffic starts to back up. There is even a traffic rule that says "Do not enter an intersection unless it is clear at the other side".

There are obviously many drivers on the Tablelands who are unaware of this rule or simply ignore it – except in one instance.

Notice at the McDonalds drive-in that everyone waits courteously on their side of the road while passing traffic flows freely past until there is adequate room in the McDonalds driveway and then they drive across without causing any disruption. Does this mean that people who eat at McDonalds understand the road rules better than those who don't?

Another problem child who causes traffic delays in the same area are those who cannot reverse out of an angle park without completely

stopping all approaching traffic.

Don't get me wrong. I know it is impossible when you are tightly hemmed in or faced with a long vehicle in the next bay.

But believe me there is plenty of room for the average sized vehicle to reverse out of an angle park without stopping passing traffic. Use your mirrors and you will find out it is quite easy after a few goes.

Personally I drive a dualcab 4WD, which is 6 meters long and is sometimes a bit of a squeeze, but I see many Land Cruisers and other large 4WD’S that are able to do it, so for the average small sedan it is much easier.

Reply to croc letter I READ with interest Barry Bares’ letter regarding Estuarine Crocodiles.

Having worked in the wildlife section of the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service for several years. I would like to give an account of how the protection of wildlife over the years has changed in Queensland.

The Fauna Act of 1952 gave protection to all mammals and birds, wild by nature. Protected fauna could only be taken under permit eg- certain species of duck and quail for seasonal recreational hunting and some common species of kangaroo and wallaby that could be hunted commercially.

Echidnas, Koalas and Platypus were afforded permanent protection.

Reptiles in the state were not afforded any kind of pro-

tection until 1974. After World War 2 a commercial industry involving the unregulated harvesting of skins from both Estuarine and Freshwater crocodiles existed in Queensland.

In 1974 a new Fauna Conservation Act was proclaimed.

The legislation gave protection to all native wildlife including, for the first time, reptiles. The impact that unregulated harvesting of skins was having on the species was one of the main reasons reptiles were included. There was considerable political pressure by the Federal, Western Australian and Northern Territory Governments to regulate the taking and sale of crocodile products in Queensland. WA and The NT had already legislated to protect crocodiles.

There is no disputing Estuarine crocodile numbers have increased and their distribution widened since their legal protection in 1974. Of course, in some instances, their presence in areas where they have not been seen before can be attributed to escaped captive animals or the unlawful and dangerous practice of releasing them as a joke as in Lake Eacham and other areas.

A consequence of the increase in numbers it is now critically important for people to have a heightened awareness and take appropriate safety measures when recreating on or near water where crocodiles are known to inhabit.

If shooting of crocodiles was ever reintroduced in Queensland again, under licence, I would suggest it would be for a minimal take and that being the case the threat to the public would remain.

The evidence clearly shows that more people are attacked by sharks than crocodiles and yet there is not the same community outrage.

Surfers and divers know in advance that the activity they partake in is dangerous yet it is worth the risk for the sport they love.

Thanks to our local Hospital ON the night of December 17 I had to go to the Mareeba Hospital as my tongue and throat had swollen up due to an allergic reaction.

I simply was suffocating and in a panic. Upon arrival I was immediately surrounded by the most professional group I could wish for.

Every one took a role, injections, blood pressure, oxygen assistance, administered adrenaline and checked my heart and most of all reassuring me I was ok as I was also having a panic attack (Apparently they found one, my heart that is). Even waking Dr Peter who was there in a flash.

I am so grateful for their professionalism and dedication to my welfare.

Apparently it is the opinion of Dr Peter that I had a reaction to one of the medications I was on and it has now been replaced and so far no more reaction.

I commend the staff and say we are so so lucky to have such a wonderful group and a first class hospital.

I don’t remember their names, but they will know who they are.

2020 hindsight 2020 will be remembered as the year that most of us will want to forget.

Time magazine dubbed 2020 “The Worst Year Ever.” The cover of the magazine showed 2020 with a big red “X” crossed over it, only the fifth time it has used that symbol.

The year started off with a terrible bushfire.

Then came the Covid-19 pandemic that infected almost 30 million people.

Economies around the world collapsed, job losses are at a peak and several sectors witnessed a doom. Natural disasters followed in different parts of the globe, leading to further bloodbath But was 2020 really the worst?

Recently 28 historians from Yale, Oxford, and Stanford choose their worst year in history — or, as they put it, the most stressful.

The worst year in world history wasn’t even a close contest.

It was 1348, the height of the Black Death, during which as many as 200 million people died.

That would be like wiping out about 65 percent of the U.S. population.

The Holocaust in 1944 ranked second, followed by 1816, when a volcano eruption in Indonesia blocked out the sun, starving millions.

Other historians claim that 536 was the worst year. That’s the year a volcano erupted in Iceland and the sun dimmed for a year and a half, leading to a catastrophic global cold spell.

You could argue that

1918, the year of the Spanish flu pandemic, was the worst. Or that any of the years of the Great Depression, from 1929 to 1933, deserve the title.

1968 also made the list as the Vietnam War raged and Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were both assassinated.

So when people say 2020 was the worst year why? Is it because they didn’t get to go to Bali for a holiday? Or because the borders were closed or because the shop ran out of toilet paper? How do you compare those first world problems to the holocaust, any of the World Wars or the great depression?

As an Australian would you rather put up with border closures, self-isolation and social distancing or the debacle that is Brexit and the current mess that is the USA. 2020 has been far worse for some than others and it’s deepened by the constant social media invasion telling us what an awful year it is.

If pressed, a lot of people would acknowledge that 2020 wasn’t the worst year of their lives.

Sometimes when we say “worst” what we really mean is strange. 2020 was a very strange year, and frightening in its unfamiliarity.

In many ways we’re still too close to 2020 to understand what its real ranking will be, but seen through the lens of hindsight, 2020 will be seen as a tough and stressful year but not the worst.

Method

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. 2. Place chicken on a cutting board and make 5 slits in each breast, being careful not to cut through completely. Transfer to a baking sheet.

3. Drizzle olive oil over chicken and season with oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

4. Stuff each chicken breast with ham, salami, provolone, and roast capsicum, then sprinkle with olives and Parmesan.

5. Bake until chicken is cooked through and no longer pink, about 25 minutes.

6. Garnish with parsley before serving.

Christopher John Fry Born in Tiverton, Devo, England, 03-07-1931, then sailed to Australia at the age of 6 months with his parents Christopher and Mysie Fry and settled on a block of land on Gadaloff Road, Butchers Creek to start dairying after the scrub was felled and grass sown.

John started his schooling at the Butchers Creek School, and then to Thornbury College in Charters Towers. When he left school he helped his father clearing scrub and improving the dairy farm.

He moved to Innisfail in 1953 and bought a Milk Run. It was there he met Shirley Hoskins and fell in love. John and Shirley were married in Innisfail on 23-01-1954. John sold the Milk Run in late 1954 and moved to the Tablelands where they took over John’s parents farm.

During this time he felled more scrub to milk more cows.

During this time the family increased, three daughters Carol, Sharon and Brenda. In March 1976 they sold the dairy farm and moved to a 10 acre block on the corner of Topaz Road and Lake Barrine and built a new house there.

John went timber cutting, he cut timber for Andy Connolly at Mt Windsor for several years. Shirley worked in the Malanda Dairy Factory grocery shop for many years. In the early eighties they grew strawberries for several years until Cyclone Winifred destroyed the growing sheds.

John worked for the Eacham Shire for several years before retiring. John was a Member of the Malanda Lions Club and the Yungaburra Lions Club for a total of 49 years. He was on the Malanda Ambulance Committee and the Band Festival Committee, raising funds to build the Malanda Ambulance Centre. He was awarded Citizen Of The Year in the Eacham Shire for 1997.

John and Shirley moved to Atherton in 2000 as Shirley’s health was deteriorating with diabetes. Shirley passed away in 2006. John married Valerie O’Rouke in 2007 and lived in Atherton until September 2018, then sold up and moved to Brisbane. John’s health was deteriorating and he spent a lot of time in hospital, and passed away 28th November 2020.

He is survived by 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren, and wife Valerie.

Roosters ready to crow in season 103

The 2020 season was cut short after just one trial match against rivals Atherton Roosters with the COVID lockdown putting a hold on the season which was eventually cancelled.

THE Atherton Senior Roosters returned to the training paddock last week for the start of their pre-season in the lead up to a busy 2021 Cairns District Rugby League season.

Players arrived at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium for the first time in more than nine months for a return to the club’s scheduled training after the long 2020 lay off due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

The Roosters have welcomed back players who will feature in their first grade, re-

serve grade, under 18 and ladies tackle team.

Head coach Graham Clark said he was impressed by the numbers for the first hit outs and the dedication shown by the players to prepare themselves for the new season.

“There is a positive atmosphere around the club with everyone very excited and happy to be back,” Clark said.

“This brings plenty of energy to our group looking to get the ball rolling again and have a good crack in 2021 which is

season 103 for the club.”

The Roosters squad will be made up of the core group of players who went one game short of the grand final in 2019 along side several fresh young rising stars.

Three pre-season trial games for the Roosters are booked for March 6, 13 and 20 before their opening premiership match with Ivanhoes on March 27.

The Senior Roosters train at 6pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights for all grades.

Returning A-Grade Captain Coach Trent Barnard said that the boys are excited and eager to get out onto the field after missing out on an entire season.

“All the boys are excited to get back together because last year was hyped up and it was a bit of a letdown,” he

“We recruited well and had a good preseason with the community behind us.

“We’ve got a really good leadership group with some older heads that have been there and know what it takes to play good footy.”

Two trial matches are scheduled for March with the season proper set to start in April.
