MT Uncle Distillery’s award winning Gin will now be stocked in BWS stores around the country after locals voted it number one.

The BWS Local Luvva campaign asked Australians to vote on their favourite local alcohol producers with the winners then given the opportunity to have their local sprits, beers and wines stocked on BWS shelves.

After voting closed, Mt Uncle’s Botanic Australis Gin came out on top and was named fan favourite in the Spirits/Premix category for Queensland.

Nearly 300 independent winemakers, brewers and distillers across the country threw their products in the ring for the campaign with almost 50,000 consumers having their say. 18 Fan Favourites were crowned across the country with winners named in every state in the categories of wine, spirit/pre-mix and beer/cider.

Mark Watkins, Head Distiller and Director at Mt Uncle in Walkamin said the Local Luvva campaign was a way to generate more interest in locally produced products.

“It’s great they now acknowledge craft sprits,” said Mr Watkins.

“It’s really good for our sales as it now allows people greater access to our products, which means that we don’t have to rely on local sales or boutique bar and restaurant sales.”

Mr Watkins also said that being stocked in BWS outlets meant more security for the distillery.

and helps to keep us afloat, as we took a hit when bars and restaurants closed across the country,” he said.

Mr Watkins said the win was

Lui to continue as Cook becomes marginal WHILE the Electoral Commission of Queensland is yet to officially declare the seat of Cook, the Queensland Labor Party has.

Incumbent Labor MP Cynthia Lui saw a swing against her this election, but still received 39.98 per cent of the primary vote.

LNP candidate for Cook Edward ‘Nipper’ Brown, who received 24.3 per cent of the primary vote, hasn’t yet officially conceded the seat of Cook, but he did post a thank you note to all of his supporters on social media which read.

“To say “thank you” to every person who has supported and

encouraged me in my campaign for Cook is an absolute necessity, but at the same time, will never seem quite enough to fully express my deepest gratitude,” he wrote.

“We offered choice to voters in Cook, and they have definitely grasped that opportunity for change in significant numbers, but across the state, this was an election for safety in incumbency.

“It has been an honour and privilege to travel so broadly across Cook in the last three months, and to meet new and old friends – thank you for your time, your encouragement, and

your support of democracy and choice.”

When comparing preferences in Cook the result was a little close with 55.2 per cent versus 44.8 per cent to Ms Lui. In Mareeba and Mareeba West MS Lui received 23.6 and 27.05 per cent of the vote while Nipper Brown received 31.78 and 34.04 per cent respectively.

In Mossman Mr Brown only received 21.52 to Ms Lui’s 34.88 per cent.

On Horn Island and Bamaga Ms Lui dominated with 89.86 and 89.28% per cent respectively while Nipper lead in Chillagoe with 56.32%

KAP Candidate Tanika parker lead the charge in Hope Vale with 52.59% of the primary vote and Desmond Tayley won his home town of Wujal Wujal with 31.84%.

Once a very safe Labor seat, Cook has become more marginal over the last decade. It was won

by Labor with a margin of only 2.2% in 2009, but the swing that delivered victory to the LNP in 2012 was 5.7%, a relatively small swing compared to Labor's collapse elsewhere in the state.

The then LNP member David Kempton took a 10.2% swing back to Labor at the 2015 election delivering victory to Labor's

Billy Gordon.

Within two months of his election Gordon was expelled from the Labor Party for failing to disclose past domestic violence orders and criminal convictions when nominating for Labor pre-selection.

Gordon continued to sit on the cross bench after his expulsion and did not contest the 2017 election.

Cook was then won in 2017

by Labor's Cynthia Lui. She polled 40.1% on first preferences, but with the LNP, One Nation and Katter's Australian Party candidate all polling between 17% and 19%, Ms Lui

had little difficulty winning on preferences.

In the 2017 State election the ALP held Cook with margin of 8.1%, something that has now been whittled down due to a +6.5 per cent swing towards the LNP, making Cook a marginal seat.

A final decision from the ECQ is due sometime this week.

The Express reached out to Ms Lui’s office and was told by a spokesperson “Cynthia is on leave this week and is unlikely to respond by the time of the deadline you have set.”

Officially open

EVEN though the John Doyle Bridge has been open for over a week, on Friday November 6 the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) along with council staff and the Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the bridge.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said the original John Doyle bridge was built as a single lane bridge in the 1920’s and was then upgraded in the 1960’s and then in the 1980’s it was replaced again.

“After 30 years the structure was coming to end of its life and MSC in conjunction

with the Australian and State Government decided to restore and increase the bridges lifespan,” she said.

“I would also like to thank our bridge crew who worked so hard day in and day out.

“I’m sure this new bridge will provide a safe and reliable transport route for our community for many years to come.”

Repairs were originally scheduled to start in June 2019 but had been delayed several times to avoid congestion when road works started on the new lights on Byrnes Street.

Work finally began in June of this year, with more delays announced for the reopening of

the bridge in September. The bridge was finally open to traffic on Friday October 30.

One question that locals have been asking is why do the barriers not go up and down like the old bridge?

A council spokesperson said “The new bridge is built to standard, current bridge safety standards require bridges to have permanent barrier systems,” they said.

“Human safety is more important than flood debris and the new bridge has been built to withstand flood debris.

“There is a big difference between designs standards in the 1980’s and now.”

Movember’s Australian Country Director Rachel Carr said, “If there’s ever been a time to embrace Movember and shed those lockdown beards, it’s now, in 2020. It’s been an incredibly difficult year for men, which makes this year’s campaign our most important yet.” she said “Research conducted by Movember shows us the effects of the pandemic on men’s mental health in particular, is concerning, and is still far from over.

“Job losses, relationship stresses and social isolation are taking a toll. We’ve been working hard to fast-track digital mental health resources, to address the need.

“With the help of our community, Movember will continue funding and applying research to prevent our fathers, brothers, partners, sons and friends, from dying prematurely.”

Figures released earlier this year by Movember, as part of a global study carried out by the Social Research Centre found that: Over half of Aussie men (52 per cent) said no one asked how they’re coping during the COVID-19 pandemic.

23 per cent of men said their mental health had worsened in

the first six weeks of the pandemic, with 30 per cent noting increased feelings of loneliness.

Older men are the group most likely to have experienced poorer social connection, with 61 per cent of men aged 45+ years reporting they feel less connected to their friends since the COVID-19 outbreak.

In Australia, calls to Lifeline increased by 25 per cent when physical distancing kicked in.

Movember’s Global Director of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Brendan Maher said, “Not surprisingly, our research confirmed that the impact of COVID-19 has hit men pretty hard, in Australia and globally,” he said.

“Many guys are isolated and disconnected from their usual social support networks – and the places where men usually go to have those shoulder-toshoulder conversations with their mates, like going out for a drink or a bite to eat, watching or playing sport, or going to the gym, have been severely reduced.”

“We know men aren’t great at asking for, or seeking help at the best of times, so we need to do as much as we can to buffer some of the problems they’re facing, now. The programs Movember have delivered this year will make a meaningful impact going forward.”

It was a horror a couple of days for locals and fire fighters as fires raged around Mareeba last week.

Jaques Coffee where fire fighters started back burning and water bombing to get that fire under control.

“The guys did a fantastic job and we had a lot of help and support from locals and also from the RFS.” Gabby Stark said she didn’t even manage to make it to her home in Country Road Estate.

“I got into the line at the roadblock just after 2pm at Emerald End Road and I stayed in the line for about three hours before I turned around and went and stayed at a friend’s house.” she said.

The fire around Emerald End Road was later brought under control with residents allowed to return back to their homes at around 6pm.

Just as fire fighters and SES volunteers were gearing up to take on the two fire fronts, high voltage power lines came down on the Kennedy highway at around 2pm. About 1400 homes lost power and initially it was thought the power outage was caused by the nearby fires.

It was later revealed that a grader driver working on roadwork’s on the Kennedy Highway had snapped a nearby power

poll, causing extensive damage.

According to an Ergon Energy spokesperson, the first priority for Ergon crews was to make the area safe so the grader operator could safely exit the vehicle.

“Any contact with powerlines has the potential to cause serious injury or death, so drivers and machinery operators are advised to stay in the cab and wait for help.” they said.

“Bystanders should remain at least ten metres away and report the life-threatening hazard to emergency services on 000.

“By 3.50pm crews had restored power to 1000 customers.

The remaining customers were reconnected at 6.21pm after crews had completed emergency network repairs.”

The grader operator exited the vehicle safely and investigations are continuing.

The second bushfire was on Friday, November 6 just after 2pm in the vicinity of Sabin Road East, Sabin Road West and Malone Road and was travelling in a westerly direction.

QFES worked with aerial water bombers to bring the blaze under control and just after 4pm they had announced that “QFES crews have contained a bushfire

Crews continued to monitor the blaze on Friday, which was burning under control and within containment lines with no reports of the fire from QFES over the remainder of the weekend.

37 PLUS degree days and hot dry winds in Mareeba resulted in two consecutive days where Mareeba residents were warned to get ready to leave their homes due to bushfires.

On Thursday, November 5 residents of Mareeba were told to get ready to leave their homes after a fire started to threaten properties between Godfrey Road and Hastie Road that later threated properties around Rise Country Estate and Emerald Falls Estate.

At one stage there were 14 appliances with 46 fire fighters from the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) as well as two water bombers and a surveillance helicopter.

RFS units were called in from Kuranda, Davies Creek, Speewah and Tinaroo as well as SES volunteers and Mareeba Shire Council workers.

Acting Inspector Brad Fleming said the fire started as one front and then split in two.

“The grassfire started at around 10am at Gilmore Road and then it escalated very quickly, the wind from the south west didn’t help,” he said.

Funding open to support businesses THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Economic Development Fund is now open for 2020 and is accepting applications.

This fund allows organisations and businesses to use the funding they receive to conduct projects, activities and events that will help grow business, investment and employment on the Tablelands.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti is encouraging groups and businesses alike to apply for the $5,000 that is available through the $35,000 fund.

“This important funding program supports initiatives that help grow the economy to support businesses and create more jobs and economic opportunities,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity for

not-for-profit groups, such as chambers of commerce, industry groups and businesses looking to fund a cost-neutral community project.

“If you have an idea that could help businesses grow, develop new skills, capture more visitor spending, plan for critical infrastructure, or attract investment to the region, make sure you apply.”

The Malanda Chamber of Commerce used their funding from last year’s round to launch their shop local campaign and provide a street shopping night.

The event was a massive success with 1200 people flooding the street to participate and enjoy all of the shopping and entertainment on offer.

New marketing company for the Atherton Tablelands

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti is encouraging businesses and organisations to apply for TRC’s new round of Economic Development Funding.

TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) has awarded the tender to deliver a destination marketing campaign to a Tamworth based company C7EVEN with a three-year contract costing $25,073 a year.

In August of this year both the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) and the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) decided to discontinue using Tourism Atherton Tablelands (TAT) for tourism and destination marketing and instead chose to put the role out to tender.

Both councils had been funding TAT to the tune of $25,000 per council, per year.

At the time TRC Mayor Rod Marti said “It’s important that Council looks at new ways, just because it’s been done one way for a long time doesn’t mean that’s the only way,” he said “TRC and MSC have made this decision together.”

A workshop to discuss regional tourism structures and destination marketing was held in Atherton in June 2020 with Councillors from both Councils attending. Both councils agreed to go to market for destination marketing in the hope of identifying new opportunities.

A tender was released in August for destination marketing of the Atherton Tablelands region as a whole, and also for each individual Council area. The budget was $25k per Council per year.

15 applications for collaborative marketing were received, including two proposals for marketing the TRC region only. The applications were assessed by officers from both Councils in August.

In September Mareeba Shire Council advised that they did not wish to proceed with a collaborative marketing arrangement and were exploring other opportunities.

According to TRC documents “Two submissions had been received for marketing of the TRC region only, and a further three who had submitted for collaborative marketing submitted a revised proposal just for the TRC region,” “One applicant is based in the TRC region with TRC and Cairns-based contractors, one is based in Cairns, three are state or national based marketing businesses one of which has Cairnsbased staff.

The announcement that C7EVEN has won the threeyear contract was made at last week’s TRC council meeting.

Mayor Rod Marti said that the TRC needed to go in another direction for destination marketing because they had been using TAT for such a long time.

“We decided that we wanted to do something different, as a new council we have new ideas about marketing the region and it was time to go to market and test the water,” he said.

“By offering another company the chance to do our destination marketing it gives us a chance to possibly head in some new directions.”

Even though C7EVEN are a Tamworth based company Mr Marti said they had an office in Cairns.

“They do have an office in Cairns, with a person who covers Far North Queensland,” he said.

“My understanding is that C7EVEN are already fairly well connected up here with local tourism marketing operators and they ticked all the boxers that we required.”

While the TRC have awarded a contract a spokesperson from the MSC said “Council is considering a number of options, including outsourcing the marketing – however, no decision has been made.”

Mango couture A farm girl from Dimbulah has turned waste into her very own fashion statement

DIMBULAH’S Jessica Collins has made and designed a formal dress with mango seeds from her family’s farm.

The 17-year-old, year 12 student who now boards in Sydney said the idea came to her after seeing over-ripened mangoes go to waste at the families Dimbulah mango farm.

“Normally the overripe mangoes and husks are put into landfill at home, and they take a very long time to break down. The seeds are used to plant more mango trees but not much is done with the husks,” she said.

“I noticed how much fruit was thrown away and was thinking of ways to help eliminate that.

“Ever since I was little girl I have always loved fairy dresses and since I started design I always had the idea of designing my own ball gown.”

Jessica said the farm has also used the husk for animal fodder and that it can be processed and used as mulch, but instead she decided to create beauty from waste.

“I love the thought of mixing sustainability with fashion,” she said.

“I’ve worked in the packhouse at home and I’m very strict on the quality standards of our fruit so there are often quite a lot of mangoes that we don’t pass.”

In creating the dress, Jessica started collecting the seeds of overripe fruit. She cut off the flesh and then used a pressure cleaner to strip the remaining fruit. She dried them in the humidifier to avoid mould, then sliced around the outside of the husk.

The dress took about four months to make used about 1400 mangoes and weighs

about 5 Kgs. “I looked at the patterns of the husk and started to create the corset and the dress itself.

I considered various colour options, but once they’d dried, the husks became a beautiful pearl colour so I decided to leave them natural,” she said.

Jessica designed and made the whole dress from scratch and then hand sewed on the husks in rows of 20 with 70 per row.

“The reaction has been great and people are starting to realise that there is a lot of waste in the food industry and hopefully we can do something about that in the future,” Jessica said.

Jessica said she is considering a career as a nurse or in the fashion industry but for the immediate future she is hoping to head back north and help her family in the packing shed for the upcoming mango season.

False camera alarm THE Department of Transport and Main roads (TMR) has confirmed that new mobile phone and seat belt cameras are currently being trialed across Far North Queensland.

TRM also confirmed that a new mobile camera that has recently been installed between Kuranda and Speewah near the corner of Windy Hol-

low Road is not one of those cameras.

A TMR spokesperson confirmed that the mobile camera was actually used to monitor traffic conditions due to the road works on the Kennedy Highway and the closure of one lane on the Barron River Bridge.

A TMR spokeswoman said

the cameras would be trialled until the end of the year and if they prove successful they will be rolled out from mid2021.

“Fines are not being issued during the trial. However, police will still enforce the laws using traditional roadside enforcement methods.”

THE Bureau of Metrology has released weather data for the next three to four months for Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands region.

The basic outlook for the rest of the year for Atherton and Mareeba is: La Niña is active across the tropical Pacific Ocean. La Niña is typically associated with above-average rainfall across much of eastern Australia during spring and into early summer.

For the November, December, January (NDJ) and the DJF (December, January, February) periods, both daytime and overnight temperatures are likely to be warmer than average along the coastal fringe, and possibly extending into the Tablelands.

During periods of rain, daytime temperatures are typically cooler than usual, but overnight temperatures are warmer than usual due to cloud cover.

Rainfall – For the NDJ period, there is a 70 per cent chance that Mareeba and surrounding areas will receive above median rainfall (median rainfall is 371 mm for NDJ period).

There are similar odds, around 70 per cent for a wetter than usual DJF period (median rainfall is 572 mm for DJF) Storms – Thunderstorms are common on the Tablelands during the summer months (DJF). The season is also characterised by persistent heat and humidity, with frequent shower activity.

During La Niña, there is a greater number of severe thunderstorms* across Far Northern Queensland during spring, but there is no significant correlation between number of severe thunderstorms and La Niña in summer. *Severe thunderstorms are those that produce damaging wind (90km/h or more), heavy rainfall conducive to flash flooding, large hail (2cm diameter or more) and/or tornadoes.

Tropical cyclones – Every northern wet season has had at least one tropical cyclone cross the Australian coast. The tropical cyclone season runs from November to April. The Queensland (Eastern) region on average sees four tropical cyclones a season, with at least

one crossing the coast.

As a result of La Niña, there is a 66 per cent chance of above average tropical cyclone numbers this season in the Eastern region (and for Australia).

There is an increased risk of at least one severe tropical cyclone crossing the Queensland coast.

Heatwaves – Heatwaves are also a risk. La Niña can bring more rain and increased humidity, which can mean fewer extreme heat days. While heatwaves may be not be as severe, there is a risk of prolonged low to moderate-intensity heatwaves, with high humidity, which can increase the risk to human health.

Bushfires – In terms of bushfires, with the expected wetter than average conditions across eastern and northern Australia, long-running bushfires are less likely, however, the wetter spring can lead to abundant grass growth, which could increase fire danger as it naturally dries during summer.

prospectors was that unless an area identified as State Forest, was also identified as a General Permission Area (GPA) there is no provision to carry out prospecting activities on the land.

“We are supportive of appropriately mineralised areas in North Queensland being identified for fossicking and prospecting activities. A number of landowners around Georgetown, Gilberton and nearby Palmerville Station offer the opportunity to camp and prospect for a fee,” she said “In regard to gemstones, we are fortunate to have a number of fossicking fields located within a few hours’ drive from the Atherton Tablelands.

“For areas not designated as fossicking land, landowners consent must be given prior to entering a property to carry out fossicking and prospecting activities. This includes State managed lands and Resource Reserves, entry without consent is considered trespass.”

Information is available on the Queensland Governments website in relation to locations, rules and purchase of a fossickers licence.

“The therapeutic value of fossicking in this COVID-Depression affecting so many people is badly needed. So it cures the depression from COVID and it was one of the cures of the Great Depression itself. The Government built nothing in the Great Depression, but they at least allowed us to go out and do it for ourselves.”

Claire Mackney who is the President of the North Queensland Miners Association said the Miner’s Right was abolished in Queensland thirty years ago and with the significant legislative changes across a number of Acts in the time since.

“The North Queensland Miners Association are supportive of recreational and economic initiatives in the resources sector to assist the state in coming through the current economic crisis,” she said.

“As an industry body, we are supportive of the small miner and prospector making a living by tapping into the rich resources that this state has to offer provided that it is done within the confines of current legislation.”

Ms Mackney said one of the problems faced by recreational

The fossicking of gemstones and gold was originally allowed under the Mining Fossicking Act but was repealed in 1994.

Mr Katter said, “We are in the middle of a mild holocaust – “the COVID-depression”.

“We Australians went out gold fossicking which wasn’t surprising since our fathers and grandfathers came to Australia searching for gold.

“The therapeutic value of buying a metal detector and going out, as our forefathers did, to the Clermonts, the Curries, the Chillagoes, the Charters Towers, and Gympies, is enormous. It is a fun thing to do and I have a good friend, who in six months, made over $200,000.”

“The KAP will move for the restoration of the land to we the Australian people – not the Crown. “The Mining Right will come back into existence and state forest fossicking will be restored.

Historic Atherton house demolished AN Atherton house that was destroyed by fire in August has finally been demolished.

The house fire broke out on August 9 at around 9am on the corner of May street and Gibson street in Atherton.

The historic house was demolished on Thursday, November 5 and in previous incarnations the house had been an Ambulance station, a hostel and a boarding house.

Most recently the house had been converted into flats.

Damien Jenson’s father John was the owner of the building and said that his dad had owned it for nearly 40 years.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation that has affected my father and he is devastated,” he said.

“The financial impact is huge, but the emotional impact is worrying as well.

“For a 76 year old to lose something he has worked for his whole life really takes an emotional toll.”

It’s believed that Damien’s father also lost a lot of personal belonging that were stored in the building.

The cruel twist to the story is that the house had been on the market for some years and a buyer had been found but they were yet to exchange contracts before the fire.

One of the residents who was living in the house was Lani Deacon who was just waking up with her three children when she noticed her flat filling up with smoke.

Lani has 2 boys and a girl under the age of 8 and they escaped from the fire with just the clothes that they were wearing.

“It was only a matter of minutes by the time we got out the house; it was well and truly on fire.

“We lost everything as my main priority was getting children out.”

It’s believed that the fire was started deliberately and that police currently do not have enough evidence to lay charges even after witnesses have come forward with compelling statements.

Sadly Damien believes the arsonist may get away. “It would seem they will never be held accountable for their despicable actions which is sad,” he said.

“It took its toll on my Dad, he retired from his local job soon after and has moved away from Atherton full time now.”

A police spokesperson said investigations were continuing. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

THE Cooktown Rural Fire Brigade has recently received six new radios courtesy of the Cook Shire Council and the Queensland Government’s Get Ready Queensland program.

The six new waterproof, hand-held UHF radios and an emergency dedicated tablet will be used to improve communications between all agencies, contractors and volunteers during an emergency.

The radios will also be providing failsafe communications for emergency crews in blackspot areas where there is no mobile service, the tablet will be

use to provide offline access to maps to help teams identify blocks of land.

Cook Shire Mayor and Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group Peter Scott said that these new radios will improve efficiency during a disaster.

“By enhancing the way our emergency teams communicate with each other during an event, we are improving efficiency and building resiliency,” he said.

“This ensures we’re better prepared for the next inevitable disasters which can potentially save lives, property and livestock.”

Mabi forest regenerates THE dream of getting Mabi rainforest off the ‘endangered’ list is now one step closer for Tablelands residents.

Barron Catchment Care volunteers are planting more than 2000 rainforest trees in a state forest that was previously used for pine plantations.

The group’s acting coordinator Sheryl Fitch said it was exciting to see the trees growing so strongly.

“They were planted in April and some are already waist-height,’’ she said.

“Months ago, there was headheight guinea grass, lantana and tobacco bush there. This started out as a pretty daunting project with the land the way it was and with coronavirus, but somehow we’ve managed to beat the odds.”

When community tree planting was cancelled because of coronavirus re-

strictions, the group dug into project funding to engage NQ Land Management Services for the spraying and planting work. The project is part of a larger ‘Rebuilding Rainforest Resilience’ program supported by Terrain NRM through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Ms Fitch said 63 different species of rainforest trees had been planted.

“We’ll be working with Terrain NRM to monitor the site’s recovery each year now,’’ she said.

“There are more sections to plant out. We are always looking for new sites.

“Any little bit of Mabi forest we can revegetate to make a link with other sections of forest – it makes a big difference to the state of the forest as a whole and to the native fauna that live

“It’s a critically endangered rainforest ecological community that’s only found on the Tablelands in North Queensland, mainly in Curtain Figtree National Park and Wongabel State Forest. What is left is highly fragmented and just under half of it is on freehold land,” he said.

Tableland Yidinji Chair Daryl Joseph said the project was an important one for his people.

“The clan groups up here have a special connection with the forest and projects like this help to restore the environment and sustain the forest,’’ he said. “This is not just about now but about future growth and it’s for the whole community.”

5 REASONS EVERYONE SHOULD MAKE A WILL It is a common misconception that only the wealthy need to make wills or that you don’t need to have a will if you do not own any property or significant assets. Everyone should have a will and here are 5 reasons why: 1. Your estate may be worth more than you think Many young people, myself included prior to practice in the law, do not see the need to make a will. They reason that they have no assets in their estate or that their family will work things out should something happen to them. What many people do not realise is that from adulthood your estate might be worth more than you think. One example of this is if a person passes away in an accident or due to unforeseen circumstance. There may be insurance payments that are paid to your estate through your superannuation fund. Or, if a death is a result of a personal injury matter or negligence your estate may be the beneficiary of a successful court claim. All of a sudden a modest estate may be worth much more than simply the assets you held at the time that you made your will.

2. Your wishes are made known By far, the biggest reason to make a will is to make clear your wishes in the event you were to pass away.

If a person dies without a will the law steps in to dictate how a person‘s assets (their estate) is to be divided.

This may not reflect your wishes, particularly if you are not close with some of your family members.

Even if you do have a closely knit family though, your will can give direction to your family about your wishes regarding things like your funeral arrangements, who you would like to take over care of your children, donations you may wish to give to charity and really all aspects of your estate. This means less difficult decisions for your family to have to make at a difficult time.

3. The potential for disputes is reduced As your will tells your family members what your wishes are, there is less of a risk for disputes. While the risk of a dispute can never be fully avoided, by making a will your wishes are made known to your family and that reduces your family members questioning what your wishes may have been and arguing about it.

Disputes in estates can be a very costly and emotionally stressful process and making a will is an easy way to reduce the risk of a dispute between your family members.

4. It is easier to administer your estate The simple act of making a will makes an estate much easier to administer. For relatively modest estates you may not need to obtain a grant of probate, reducing costs in the administration significantly. Where a grant of probate is still required it is easier to obtain, as the court more readily accepts the appointment of an administrator (your executor) of the estate. Also the division of your assets is often a lot simpler when following the terms of your will, as opposed to the rules the law imposes.

QLD fashion honours for Mareeba local FORMER Mareeba local turned Brisbane fashion stylist Kerrie Carucci was named the Queensland representative for the Myer Fashions on Your Front Lawn competition held as part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Myer Fashions on Your Front Lawn competition was in a new virtual format this year due to COVID but that didn’t stop aspiring designers from entering the competition.

Ms Carucci entered into the Women’s Racewear category with an outfit self-designed and made by her mother and Mareeba dressmaker/designer, Milva Carucci.

Due to the 2000km separation between the mother and daughter team many facetime calls, sketches and images all culminated in Ms Carucci being named as the Queensland representative.

“Each entrant had the opportunity to submit four different outfits to capture spring racing and express your individuality and style,” Ms Carucci said.

“This competition gave me a chance to put my energy and creativity behind something positive.

“There is nothing better than creating something really unique and beautiful on that platform.”

After being named as the Queensland finalist for the Women’s Racewear category, Ms Carucci had to wait with bated breath until the National winners were announced last Thursday on Kennedy Oaks Day. Unfortunately she was not crowned as one of the national winners, but to even be selected as a Queensland representative was like a dream come true.

“There were over 300 entries for Queensland alone and to win and take out that title is incredible,” Ms Carucci said.

“To be able to represent the whole of Queensland, the state that I have grown up in and reside in is definitely a huge feat for me.

“To be standing beside the other state finalists, who all had incredible and unique outfits; it was a win in its own right.”

After becoming a state finalist in this year’s competition, Ms Carucci is unable to enter again in 2021 however she has already set her sights on the 2022 competition.

FASHION: Kerrie Carucci, a Mareeba local now turned Brisbane fashion stylist recently competed in the Myer Fashions on Your Front Lawn competition in Women’s Racewear where she was named the Queensland representative.

Sonlia makes top ten cup fashion MAREEBA’S own homegrown fashion label, Sonlia Fashion has once again been in the spotlight after they successfully made it into the top ten for two categories in the Myer Fashions on Your Front Lawn.

Normally this competition is held on Melbourne Cup race day however due to COVID a different approach had to be taken and the competition moved online.

After deciding to enter in both the Emerging Designer Award and the Millinery Award, Sonlia Fashion made it to the top ten for both categories.

‘Empress’ was the dress that was submitted by Sonlia for the Emerging Designer Award taking inspiration from the turmoil of COVID and the new vibrant colours of spring.

“We’re a designer in a small town so it’s pretty exciting and to make it in both is so rewarding,” Mrs Hastie said.

“We go to Melbourne every year and we like to look at our work amongst all the others to make sure our standards are high.

Atherton Midwifes celebrate 2nd birthday THE Atherton Midwifery Group Practice has just celebrated its second birthday. The purpose of the group is to give women expecting a baby the chance to build a relationship before the due date.

Mums, bubs and midwives came together last week at Platypus Park in Atherton to celebrate the second anniversary of the local Midwifery Group Practice (MGP).

Caseload midwife, Tanya Fleming from the Atherton MGP said the model is regarded as the gold standard of care, offering many benefits to mothers, babies and families.

“Despite the challenges of 2020, babies have continued to be born and mothers have continued receiving care from our MGP team,” she said.

“Since the implementation of MGP in Atherton in November 2018, the birth rates at Atherton Hospital have continued to rise.

“They rose from 141 in 2018 to 166 in 2019.”

The Atherton MGP is an allinclusive woman-centred model of care, whereby each woman is cared for by a ‘known midwife’ throughout her pregnancy, birth and post-natal journey.

“The benefits include shorter labours, a reduced need for pain relief, fewer pregnancy complications and improved breastfeeding rates,” Tanya said.

“Women claim they feel more comfortable and secure knowing their midwife and Atherton women have continued to report a high level of satisfaction with the care they received through the Atherton MGP. Birth numbers, however, do not reflect all of activity that

“Women who birth elsewhere continue to receive continuity of care with a known midwife from Atherton MGP supporting them during their pregnancy and for 6 weeks postnatal.”

COLES Mareeba has been able to raise $500 as a part of their appeal for Hummingbird House due to the compassion of local shoppers and team members.

The impressive fundraising efforts by the Mareeba community have contributed to a record breaking total of $550,000 raised across the state in just four weeks.

For every 12 pack of Coles brand biscuits that was bought by a customer at Coles Mareeba, 5c was donated to Hummingbird House with Mareeba Coles raising their $500 from the biscuits alone.

This money will help Hummingbird House continue to provide short break stays, family support services, creative therapies and care for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Mareeba Coles Store Manager Andrew McIntosh said that he was proud of his team for raising so much money to go towards Hummingbird House.

“It’s great for the community

and for Hummingbird House with the community being able to get behind the biscuits and the donations at the registers,” he said.

“It’s good for a small community like Mareeba to be able to assist.

“Every store in the state gets involved with Hummingbird House and they fundraise in their own way.”

Hummingbird House General Manager Dr Fiona Hawthorne said she was thrilled with the generosity shown by Queensland shoppers during these challenging times.

“Virtual programs that have been introduced at the House in response to COVID include morning teas, art therapy and music therapy sessions,” she said.

“These programs ensure our families feel supported even if they’re unable to visit Hummingbird House due to travel restrictions or distance related challenges.

own backyard and Dimbulah farmers Sam and Kylie Collins are getting ready to pick their blushing crop.

When the Collins family bought their farm in back in 2002, a bit of research went into what type of crop they were going to plant.

“We started planting Calypso trees, after a bit of research into the marketing and seeing the supermarkets moving such large volumes,” she said.

“We asked the markets what fruit was going to be viable into the future.

“We looked at Calypso’s on other farms and we saw the volume they were doing and because it’s a clean fruit over 90

per cent of our fruit is classed as premium.

“They also have a good shelf life so supermarkets love them.”

The Collins family are on 181 ha and have approximately 25,000 trees and they named the farm Blushing Acres after their blushing calypso mangoes.

They also grow avocadoes and admit that during the COVID lockdown, sales were affected but now everything was slowly getting back to normal.

As they approach picking season Kylie said they are quietly confident about the worker situation with more than 50 people already signed up to work.

“I contacted all of workers from last year and because we

have accommodation on site and they know us and know what to expect, they are all coming back to work this season,” she said.

“One issue is that our kids and their friends, who board in Sydney, are all about to finish year 12 and they’re keen to do a season on a farm – but at the moment we may have to turn those kids away due to the border situation.

“It would be a great education for kids on their break to learn about where their food comes from.

“Apart from that, we are feeling pretty optimistic about the upcoming season.”

an average of one provincial government per three million people, making Australia one of the most governed countries in the world.

How many civil servants are employed at the state level that does the same thing a federal employee does?

Australia has nine governments and 15 legislative chambers. According to the budget, federal bureaucrats cost taxpayers $58 billion last year. Now double that again for state governments and you can see where all the money is going.

Allow all government departments to fall under the federal jurisdiction and allow councils to take care of the rest. There would be no more disputes about national laws overriding local laws. The legal system would be much simpler, and costs to business and individuals would be reduced.

We constantly hear about disputes over what revenue the states receive from the Commonwealth.

All that would be a thing of the past. Expenditure could be determined according to the needs of people, irrespective of where they lived and without reference to artificial state boundaries or the flavour of the state government.

If we had a single (national) parliament we would have comprehensive lawmaking powers as well as the ability to make changes to education, tax, and climate change. Another level of government offers no unique advantages. Take the best state politicians and bureaucrats, move them up where they can do the most good and fire the rest. This would result in more efficient governance, empowered local councils and a wealthier Australia.

ARCHERY Eight members of the Tableland Company of Archers came together at club grounds today to participate in the fourth round of six ‘Back to Archery’ tournament events. Two members shot practice rounds only and six members shot scoring rounds today, Sunday the 8th November 2020. One Beginners shot practice rounds guided by coach George.

Despite the strong wind and therefor lower scoring, everyone had a good time.Todays shooting was followed by a club meeting.

SPORT Local skiers skim through competition TWO local barefoot water skiers have returned home after ripping up their competition at the recent State Titles held in Bundaberg.

Six skiers from the Northern Region QLD Barefoot Waterski Club in Atherton made the journey down in October to compete in the State Titles with three becoming State Champions and one a runner-up State Champion.

Clifford Blackford came home with the senior men’s division title, Mark Molford came second in sub-junior boys, Lindsie Jack won her junior women’s title and Katina Davis took home the senior women’s title.

Ms Davies competed in all three events over the competition coming off the back of her performance at the Australian Titles where she was selected for the Australian team.

WINNERS: The Mareeba Bulls Premier Reserves team won the Crad Evans Shield in Townsville on Saturday.

THE Mareeba United Football Club’s men’s Premier Reserves have returned home as NQ Champions after their road trip to Townville on the weekend.

The Bulls set aside their disappointment of losing the grand final on October 31 to Stratford and played a solid game winning 4-2 against Burdekin in the Crad Evans shield.

Player Coach Dennis Allen rallied his troops before the match reminding them of the heartbreak from the previous week, something they didn’t want to feel again.

The boys responded well with Steven Cater and Damien Wildman scoring a brace each with Wildman picking up this year’s top goal scorers award again, proving how valuable he is to the Bulls’ line up. Cater played to his usual high standard with his experience and contribution playing an important role in the overall makeup of the team. The Bulls celebrated

well into the night and painted Townsville orange to mark their success.

In other matches played in Townsville the Innisfail under 12’s went down 2-1 to Rebels, the under 13/14’s and Colts both lost 2-1 to Brothers.

Leichardt Ladies premier reserves lost 1-0 to Ingham; men’s 3rd Division also lost 1-0 to Wulguru.

Douglas Dragons lost 4-3 to Estates in the men’s 2nd Division while Marlin Coast Rangers went down 3-1 to Rebels.

In the Premier Ladies Edge Hill United defeated Brothers 5-4 while the Premier men’s Edge Hill United made History by defeating Saints Eagles Souths 2-1 after coming from a goal down.

Edge Hill capped of an incredible treble by winning the FNQ Premiership, Grand Final and NQ Crad Evans.

Roosters mo up for Movember THE Atherton Roosters have decided to shave down for Movember with seven of the Agrade side donning moustaches to support men’s mental health.

Movember is an annual charity fundraiser specifically targeting men’s mental health and looks to open up the conversation around men’s mental health.

The Roosters have so far raised $350 out of their $2000 goal and the players will be doing raffles and other fundraising activities during November.

Atherton Roosters A grade side player and organiser of their Movember efforts, Luke La Rosa wants to use this as an opportunity to talk about men’s mental health.

“It’s no secret that there are a lot of men’s mental health issues and health issues that are hard to talk about,” he said.

“This is a perfect opportunity for us to raise some awareness and make it more acceptable and

common to talk about these issues.

“The boys have been growing some facial hair for a while but now they’ve turned them into some seedy moustaches.”

The money raised will go directly to Movember to help support a number of men’s mental health and health issues from prostate cancer to suicide.

“Atherton is a really close team and a really close club, we’re really progressive in that we talk about these issues and raise money for different charities,” Mr La Rosa said.

“If you talk to any of the boys they would all know someone that has been impacted or affected by suicide.

“It really is a platform for us to make sure that everyone knows that it’s alright to talk about it and for what can sometimes be a tough environment it is also very supportive.”

NO SHAVE: Adam Molloy, Ned Blackman, Anthony Curcio and Luke La Rosa are all growing a mo in support of Movember.
