FAIR FUN Families flocked to Mareeba State School on Friday night for some good old fashioned country fair fun.

The school grounds were turned into a wonderland of activities and food as kids like Adam McDonald and Isaac Stallan (pictured) and their parents filled their bellies and hearts with the treats and delights that can only be found at a family Country Fair.

The main event on the night was the school’s talent show where the kids showed off their talents including one little boy who played the Super Mario Brothers theme on piano, much to the delight of his new fans.

Foundation principal awarded high honour IN celebration of Catholic Education Week two weeks ago, St Stephen's Catholic College (SSCC) honoured their past and founding principal, Mr Gerard Simon with the inaugural Saint Stephen’s Medal.

Principal Ms Kerry Manders said that the award is annually presented to an outstand-

ing member of the community who demonstrates the values of SSCC’s Patron, Saint Stephen.

“The recipient will have exemplified the service of St Stephen and walked in the footsteps of our College Patron and the recipient, like Saint Stephen, demonstrates what it means to follow Christ with

faith, service and courage,” she said.

“As the foundation Principal, Mr Simon certainly contributed long-standing service and outstanding commitment to the College and exemplified the service of Saint Stephen in his everyday actions with staff, students and families.

“Like Saint Stephen, Mr Simon truly demonstrates what it means to follow Christ with faith, service and courage.”

Mr Simon was awarded a medal and a lapel pin which features a palm branch, representing the calling and challenge to follow Saint Stephen.

Malanda history in jeporady

Malanda locals have been pushing for their community hall the Patrick English Pavilion to be heritage listed.

BY RHYS THOMAS MALANDA residents are making a desperate plea to get a 1940s era building registered in the Queensland Heritage Register, asking locals to put forward letters of support.

The Patrick English Pavilion in Malanda has been a gathering place of local significance since the 1940’s where it has held a number of important events over the years.

Now, with the pavilion in disrepair and under threat of demolition, the Malanda community has banded together to

save their local community hall.

The years have not been kind to the pavilion with sever structural damages including the wooden trusses and truss bases which have sustained major deterioration over time.

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has proposed to build a new multi-purpose centre to consolidate the facilities currently at the Malanda Showgrounds.

“The community needs modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that meet the requirements of a broad range of users,” TRC Councillor Dave Bilney said.

“We have engaged widely with the Malanda community about the future of facilities in our region and look forward to working with them to further develop the plans.”

The Patrick English Pavilion has been listed in TRC’s local heritage overlay however this overlay only relates to development and not maintenance.

In the Heritage overlay code it states that “this code applies to assessing material change of use, building work, reconfiguring a lot or operational work for development within the herit-

age overlay.”

However, every council managed building must be maintained by council and the pavilion is no exception, but the sheer scale of the damage done to the pavilion cannot be easily maintained by council without exuberant costs.

It will cost TRC over $2 million to repair the pavilion which during the process will have to be nearly completely redone.

A Department of Environment and Science Spokesperson said that the Patrick English Pavilion has been identified as a local heritage place in a her-

itage overlay in the Tablelands Regional Council’s 2016 Planning Scheme.

“Under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992, a place can be entered in the heritage register if it meets any one of the eight specific cultural heritage criteria for entry, which are set out in the Heritage Act,” they said.

“DES undertakes a careful assessment of places and must make a recommendation about State-level cultural heritage significance.

“In this instance, DES’s recommendation recognises the local cultural heritage signifi-

cance of the pavilion.”

Despite its local significance the Patrick English Pavilion does not meet any of the eight criteria required to be registered.

In the recommendation prepared by DES to the Queensland Heritage Council they recommended not to enter the pavilion in the register.

This decision was made on the grounds that “It’s (the pavilion) removal from its original camp site, conversion to a different use and substantial alterations mean that it no longer clearly demonstrates its original context, function, building form or characteristic details.”

TRC agrees with this reasoning stating they do not support the application for the heritage listing.

“We (TRC) do not support the application for state heritage listing of the Patrick English Pavilion in Malanda and support the Department of Environment and Science’s recommendation that the pavilion is not entered in the Queensland Heritage Register for the reasons they stated,” Councillor Bilney said.

“We further oppose the heritage listing because of the condition of the pavilion and the costs to repair and maintain it.”

A final decision is yet to be made as the Queensland Heritage Council will have the final verdict after their September 3 or October 8, 2021 meetings.

MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui has provided an update on local roadworks happening around the region.

Ms Lui revealed sealing works on five kilometres of the Burke Developmental Road (BDR) between Almaden and Chillagoe is scheduled to start in September.

The $14.8 million package is expected to be completed by mid-2022, weather permitting.

When these works are completed, only two sections between Almaden and Chillagoe will remain unsealed.

road safety project for the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Atherton is underway.

“This particular project will deliver wide centre – line treatment, audio tactile line marking, shoulder widening and safety barriers,” Ms Lui said.

“Works are expected to be completed in early 2022, weather permitting.”

Mareeba shared in a $17.27 million pool for upgrades to five pedestrian crossings on Byrnes Street and installation of town entry treatments at various locations within Mareeba Shire are expected to be completed

within the next month.

Ms Lui said these projects supported road safety in the Cook electorate.

“I recognise the importance of roads to locals and visitors alike – from making it easy for tourists to visit our communities, helping people who live outside major centres to commute easily and safely, to building the economy through improving transport supply chains,” explained Ms Lui. “I also understand the importance of ensuring roads are safe. These projects deliver against these objectives.”

Work done for remote roads MORE work has been completed on the Peninsula Development Road (PDR) with the Kennedy to Rocky Creek project now complete.

This project was delivered by the Bama Downer Joint Venture and is the first project under the Cape York Region Package (CYRP) Stage 2 to be completed in 2021.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said every stage of the CYRP delivered significant community outcomes.

“The CYRP Stage 2 not only upgrades critical infrastructure on Cape York Peninsula, but delivers so much more for the local community,” Mr Entsch said.

“The $23.84 million Kennedy to Rocky Creek project sealed 4.9 kilometres of the PDR, delivered more than 5000 hours of indigenous training and upskilling, and produced over $12 million of local industry participation.

“As a direct result of the PDR sealing, we have seen increased tourism, improved connectivity and greater access to services for people living in remote areas on the Cape.”

Cook MP Cynthia Lui said it’s an important milestone for the Peninsula Development Road.

“PDR is one of the wildest roads in the country,” Ms Lui said.

“Each kilometre we seal we get closer to achieving our goal of making Cape York a more accessible region.

“I am excited to see the next phases of the sealing works completed, helping people in communities across Cape York get home safer and sooner.”

CYRP Stage 2 will progressively seal a further 55 kilometres of the PDR, in 2021,15 kilometres of the PDR will be sealed with the following projects.

1 kilometre between Merluna and York Downs (Part B), 6 kilometres between Musgrave and Red Blanket (Part A), 36 kilometres as part of the Archer River Bridge Southern Approach.

Vision for Malanda committee formed

BY SALLY TURLEY AFTER months of hard work and preparation, a new organisation was born in Malanda recently when around 80 locals turned up for a mid-week, winters night meeting to find out what “Advance 4885” was all about and to decide if they wanted to be part of it.

The answer was a resounding yes, with the packed room casting an almost unanimous vote supporting the group’s formation, followed directly by the election of a full committee, effective immediately.

Since their first meeting on February 10 this year, this group’s selfless steering committee comprised of Bob Bark-

worth, Dave Bilney, Keith and Lyn Cox, Barry Hawes, Stephen Zsombok, Caroline O’Reilly, Stephen Purcell and Frank Mills have worked with one goal in mind - to make the Malanda area better for everyone.

Acknowledging they already lived in paradise, the group members wanted a new, politically and culturally neutral vehicle for the discussion and development of ideas and projects that further improved the quality of life for locals and tourists alike.

The newly elected executive of Vision 4885, included secretary, Julianne Parise from Tarzali, Vice-President, Matt Lachlan from Lake Eacham and

Treasurer, Joanne Carroll from Jaggan who are now the new beginning for this ambitious concept.

Malanda’s character and population have been evolving over the last couple of decades and while many valuable groups, centred around sports, the arts and community development, already existed, “Vision 4885” believed there were many talented individuals out there with much to contribute who did not belong to any organisation.

The steering committee wanted to establish a structure for the community to own and now that it has been formed, they are happy to give the community the reigns and step back into a role of mentoring, educating and supporting as required.

Their aim was to bring groups together, provide an incorporated body for those who wanted to volunteer, help coordinate events to avoid date clashes, provide training in meeting procedures, assist with sourcing funding and create a voice and a common purpose for the whole community.

During their formative process the steering committee identified more than 80 existing community groups, some of which were now defunct or

dormant. They were concerned about the duplication of processes and lack of unity that often resulted in inefficient outcomes.

“Vision 4885” plans to act as a ‘clearing house’ to coordinate existing group’s fundraising events, avoiding clashes throughout the year and can offer project volunteers full third party coverage for a $1/year membership fee. They can help groups apply for grants and hopefully provide a pool of volunteers to assist with projects.

People can join the new group as individuals or as a representative of other groups and membership is open to anyone who wants to join. The committee anticipate a rush of ideas and are happy to put those ideas out to the community to guage support and to ultimately push them through to gain local, state and national recognition.

Tourism has been flourishing in the region, and with that, there has been a growing community desire to have more of a say in what happens in our small towns. Citizens have often questioned some of the local government decisions and “Vision 4885” gives members a say on their terms and lets them contribute without com-

mitment.

The steering committee were thrilled with the strong show of support. “We have a beginning,” Keith Cox said.

“This will be a good direction for the community. There is huge potential there if we can tap into it. We can see the enthusiasm and I think that will

Florist makes return

Former employee of "Floral Magic," which burned to the ground recently, 20 year old Taylor Hughes of Mareeba, launched her new online florist business "Lilah and Rose Floral Design" last Wednesday.

BY SALLY TURLEY A FEW weeks ago, Renee and Taylor Hughes were woken in the middle of the night with some of the worst news you can receive as a business owner.

They were told the shop (Floral Magic) they had operated and developed over the last five years was burning down, a situation they struggled to even comprehend.

The still unexplained catastrophe left them both with houses to pay off and no job or wage to supply the required funds for payments.

Fast forward just two weeks, and after a lot of soul-searching, Taylor Hughes at just 20 years of age, has launched herself into her own business after creating “Lilah and Rose Floral Design”. The new online enterprise, which began trading last

Wednesday, offers customers the same range of services they enjoyed at Floral Magic.

“I will still be preparing and delivering bunches of flowers all over Mareeba, Dimbulah, Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands and getting them out to our more remote clients by bus, because everyone's life should include flowers,” Ms Hughes said.

“I have always loved working with flowers and after losing our family business, I realised I still had a passion for working in the industry. Initially, I will be going back to basics, offering a simpler, more eco-friendly approach, by focusing on fresh bouquets.

“Flowers are one of the oldest, most beautiful and most successful ways of showing the people in our lives how we feel. I will still be catering for all life's floral requirements, from anniversaries to corporate events, expressions of romance, sympathy or apology, to congratulations or just saying thank you, or get well.

“I trained so hard to learn my trade and the support from so many wonderful, local people has inspired me to keep going. People like our book keeper, Kathy Rocella, who took care of everything in the days after the fire and then helped me through every step involved in setting up my new business “People like Fran Stabile of You Beauty, who, wanting to help me get a start on my own, donated her entire trading proceeds from last Friday to my new venture and Michelle France of Cage and Co Eatz, who has offered me space to run ‘pop up shops’ at her business so I can stay in touch with my clients.

Then there was our wonderful mobile butcher, Bill Black who has given me the use of a cold room for as long as I need it for my flowers and the generosity of Jack Pedersen from Jacko's Welding who supplied the steel I needed to set up my new work benches,” she said.

Taylor and her mother Renee both agreed the support they have felt since the fire has been overwhelming, reminding them of just how good it was living in a small town. They want to thank everyone for all their kindnesses and for their loyal support over the last five years.

Improving the utilisation, amenity and safety at the Lakes is a priority for council with future improvements and projects due to be completed in stages.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Angela Toppin, explained that the lighting project at the Bicentennial Lakes is the result of community feedback.

“The installation of lighting at the Bicentennial Lakes was identified as a future project during community engagement conducted for the development of the Bicentennial Lakes Master Plan, and Council subsequently endorsed this as a priority project,” she said.

“The decision to install solar

lights, as opposed to traditional lights, creates additional operational cost savings.

“Improving the utilisation, amenity and safety at the Bicentennial Lakes is a Council priority and future improvements and projects will be completed, on a staged basis, as government grant funding becomes available.”

Ravenshoe reservoir construction ramps up

Works on the new Ravenshoe water reservoir are well underway with expected completion by the end of the year.

THE construction of Ravenshoe’s new water reservoir is well underway after works first commenced in May this year.

The tender for the earthworks and construction of the new reservoir and other associated infrastructure projects was awarded to King Concreting Queensland at the end of February for a total over $2,471,063.

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) also awarded the tender

for the construction of pipes, booster pump and intake upgrades to Rylsey Enterprises for $3,059,741.89 TRC Councillor Annette Haydon is impressed with the current progress of the works with it currently on track to be completed early next year.

“The earthworks have slowed a bit due to the amount of rock, but the reservoir is still on track to be completed by early next

year,” she said.

“The work will be completed by the end of the year if the weather is on our side.”

The design of a water treatment plant, pipelines and booster pump station to connect Millstream, Cassowary Heights and Belleview Estate to the Ravenshoe Scheme is also underway.

“We will continue to seek funding opportunities for the construction of the water treatment

plant and, if everything goes to plan, it too should be completed in the 2022–23 financial year,” Councillor Haydon said.

“When this comes online, residents in the Ravenshoe, Millstream, Cassowary Heights and Belleview Estate will rarely experience boil water notices (BWNs).

“The only time we should see BWNs for these areas is during emergencies.”

Country women put call out for history

Atherton Branch is putting a call out searching for any and all

memorabilia, items or history relating to the establishment of the QCWA. Material relating to the establishment of the QCWA, photographs of QCWA Halls dating back to 1925 or other dates for other branches, original QCWA recipe books to either donate or lend to be photocopied.

QCWA flags or banners from over the 100 years, names of official office bearers and their positions at any branches and photos of personnel or functions held over the century.

The call has been made looking to gather this historical material in preparation for the QCWA 100-year celebration in August 2022.

QCWA Atherton Branch secretary Kay Moloney said that each branch of the QCWA is heavily involved in their communities.

“QCWA isn’t all about scones and jam and cream but that’s not a bad part of it,” she said.

“I would love to get more original items that I can scan, laminate, frame and put on the walls.

“Just as a historical record.”

Tradies donate time and money to Atherton Hospital WHILE the redevelopment of the Atherton Hospital is steaming ahead, the tradies on site have done more than build for their local community by also taking the time to donate much needed funds.

Several of the contractors on site have been raising funds for the Atherton Hospital Friends of the Foundation over the course of the redevelopment.

Atherton Hospital Friends of the Foundation is a subsidiary of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, which fundraises in the local community with all funds staying local in Atherton and supporting the local hospital.

Coca-Cola Amatil have supplied a vending machine on the redevelopment site which is filled with cold drinks something quite popular on the hot days, with all profits being donated to the foundation.

emptied fortnightly where the proceeds are also donated and once a month there is an onsite barbecue held for a gold coin donation.

FKG Group Project Manager Kent Radnedge said his team of 10 staff were not only working hard on the project, but working hard to help the community.

“The team at the Atherton Hospital project are very proud to help raise money to go towards the Atherton Friends of the Hospital Foundation,” he said.

“It’s not just the FKG

Group but all subcontractors and anyone who comes on site contributes.

“Whether it’s just buying a cold drink, bringing their empty bottles from home or just dropping in a gold coin and joining us for a barbecue.

“They may seem like small contributions at the time, but they soon add up.”

In addition to the FKG staff, up to 40 workers employed by nine contractors are working on site all involved in building the new hospital and supporting its foundation.

Longtime volunteer and animal lover Arthur Leslie has been remember for his kindness to others, both human and animal.

Arthur lives on

THERE is not a soul who has been to the Mareeba Animal Refuge that hasn’t been touched by the late Arthur Leslie, whether they be human or animal.

A Noorinbee East Gippsland local, Arthur often reminisced about his dairy farm, the Macalister Irrigation District and the Cann River.

Arthur's Great Niece Aliesa recalled staying with her uncle, sitting in the back of the valiant, feeding his calves, riding old Julie the horse and bacon and eggs for breakfast.

His caravanning trip around Australia ended when he visited Walkamin and found the climate suited his asthma (and his garden) but he faithfully picked up The Weekly Times to stay current on rural affairs in Victoria — and got extra dog calendars to gift each Christmas.

A man of routine, Arthur continued to practise early wake ups even after selling the farm. He'd be at the Mareeba Animal Refuge to walk dogs by 7am, rain, hail or shine, year after year.

There would not be a rehomed dog in many years that Arthur did not walk, and he was proud to receive recognition for his ten years of service.

An institution, he was much loved by staff, volunteers and visitors alike.

If you walked dogs with Arthur he would give you a pocket full of cheese or schmackos and an extra lead so they could have a swim in the chan-

nel. With dogged determination, he won over the most reserved dogs with his treats to take them for a walk.

Arthur always had treats for his human friends too, whether it be a cold can of soft drink or a bikkie. When I told him I liked dark chocolate, he made sure to get me a block of Lindt 70% whenever he shopped. Generous and gentlemanly, he would never let a lady pay for lunch. Felicity recalls one hot summer when she first started volunteering, he'd buy a big box of drumsticks and they'd share one after lunch together.

Visitors to Walkamin Caravan park each year described their privilege to know Arthur. Their dog used to sit under their van waiting for him to come him and give her a treat.

Arthur moonlighted as a newspaper deliveryman and enjoyed stopping in to visit his friends in Walkamin to drop off The Express, and have a cuppa and conversation of course. You didn't bring up the Greenies unless prepared for a passionate discourse though!

When I worked at the refuge and fell in love with one of the dogs, Cassidy, he went out on trial and I thought I'd never see him again. When it didn't work out and Cass returned, Arthur swooped in to put a deposit down and swiftly phoned me.

Seven years on from the adoption, it's the best decision I almost never made.

Arthur may be gone, but through the lives he touched, he lives on.

Extinction dodged by Queensland crocs A NEW Queensland Government survey has found that Queensland crocodile populations have continued to recover after almost being hunted to extinction in the 70s.

A three-year Queensland Estuarine Crocodile Monitoring Program had identified there was anywhere between 20,000 to 30,0000 non-hatchling animals.

Department of Environment and Science Wildlife Program Coordinator Dr Matt Brien said that despite the growing population only 20

per cent of the population is found south of Cooktown.

“The survey showed the spatial distribution of crocodiles in Queensland has not changed, and there is no evidence of any southward expansion of its range,” he said.

“Due to the limited amount of suitable nesting habitat, the Queensland crocodile population is not expected to reach the size or density of the Northern Territory crocodile population.

“Although crocodile numbers have increased along

Queensland’s east coast, the survey showed the average size of the animals has decreased.”

This decrease in average size has been identified as a likely consequence of the Queensland Government’s crocodile management program.

The program identifies crocodiles that are a potential threat to public safety and removes them from the wild, from 2004 to 2019 more than 450 crocodiles were removed.

Young aspiring neuroscientist wins state Brain Bee Challenge

BY ELLIE FINK Grade 10 student Caitlin Wadley has gone from country town science classrooms to the big laboratories, taking out the top place in the Queensland Finals for the Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI).

The ABBC is a competition for Grade 10 highschool students, as a way to teach aspiring young scientists about brain functions and begin their potential careers in neuroscience.

Caitlin, a passionate science and maths student at St Stephen's Catholic College (SSCC), said that the competition being held at QBI was enough to keep her beaming with joy.

“I couldn't wipe the smile off my face, the labs were incredible and I just can't wait to get among those people (at QBI) and learn from them,” she said.

“The facilities down there were incredible and the research projects that we heard about were really intriguing.

“I am really interested in the brain because there is so much to know and with neuroscience being a relatively new field it offers so much room for curiosity and discovery.”

In preparation for the com-

petition, Caitlin undertook many online modules to learn about the brain and its functions, with her friends supporting her along the way.

“This year we used Education Perfect to learn our material but my friends were a huge help by quizzing me during study,” Caitlin said.

“I also used a lot of online resources to get a grasp of the content we were covering and took plenty of notes.

“To have won means a lot to me and it means my hardwork has really paid off. I spent a lot of time preparing because this is a field I am very interested in.

“I set myself really high goals and my friends are always there to back me up and push me to be better and have full faith that I will get there with the right work ethic and passion.”

SSCC Principal Ms Kerry Manders said that she was incredibly proud of Caitlin and her progress throughout the competition.

“I am incredibly proud of Caitlin's efforts in being awarded Queensland champion and I am delighted for Caitlin and our staff to see their efforts and hard work come to fruition,” Ms Manders said.

IN the recent trend of bank changes Atherton’s Commonwealth Bank branch has joined the fray after it was announced that they would have new trading hours as of September 13.

As part of a nationwide change Atherton’s Commonwealth Bank branch has joined 90 other regional branches as they change their operating times.

Initially the branch opened at 9.30am until 4pm, now under the new changes the bank will close at 1pm.

The change was out in place to match demand from Commonwealth customers through their phone and online channels, those who do bank instore often choose in the morning or on their lunch breaks.

Commonwealth Bank Executive General Manager Mark Jones said that these changes have been made adapt to the evolving needs of customers.

“Our branches in regional Australia will continue to play an important role in delivering great service to our customers now and into the future,” they said.

“This is an example of how we are adapting to meet changing customers’ evolving needs while ensuring jobs stay in regional communities.

New drainage on Rosewood Close will improve stormwater runoff ($300k) and we’ll be looking at options to upgrade the causeway on Moomin Road.

Before the end of the year Tolga will have a new, all-abilities playground, picnic shelter, barbecue, paths and landscaping ($583k)3, and Jack May Park in Malanda will have a new nature play area, barbecue, seating, playground and landscaping ($565k)3. A new barbecue and picnic shelters will be built at Lions Park in Herberton ($125k)2, and the car park at the end of Railway Lane in Atherton will be sealed ($150k)3.

A new machinery shed and bollards will be installed at the Wondecla Sports Oval ($70k) and Yungaburra Memorial Reserve will have work done on the oval surface, and new bollards, trees and irrigation will be installed ($60k)2.

Our budget has committed $150k for replacement footpath on Tully Falls Road from the Kennedy Highway to the bridge and along the Gillies Highway and part of Fig Street in Yungaburra ($68k).

We’re continuing our commitment to improved water supply with further investment in water infrastructure. VIETNAM Veterans Day and Long Tan Day is set to be commemorated next Wednesday with veterans and community members alike to gather at the Mareeba Cenotaph.

Starting at 11am on Wednesday, August 18 the service seeks to recognise and remember the sacrifices of Australia’s brave soldiers in the Vietnam war and the battle on Long Tan. Schools and other community members and organisations will be laying wreaths as a sign of respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Mareeba RSL Sub-Branch president Ross Cuzzubbo said that it is important to remember the sacrifices people made in one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. “The battle of Long Tan was one of the fiercest battles fought in Vietnam,” he said.

“I believe it is worthwhile remembering not only for that battle but for all the other years Australian servicemen served in Vietnam.

“We should have some service to remember those who served and fought.”

Major Peter Townsend from the Salvation Army will be conducting the prayer and reading while Vietnam veteran Gary Morgan from the 2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Infantry will be the guest speaker.

Community pantry reopens THE Mareeba Community Centre (MCC) has settled into their new digs on Byrnes Street and has decided to reopen the Mareeba Community Pantry for locals in need.

The pantry has been operating in partnership with QITE and has now relocated to 39b Byrnes Street, the new site of MCC. With the aim to provide essentials to those in need, the pantry contains non-perishable food items and other essential items at a discounted price.

Aimed at the most vulnerable members of the community the pantry gives them the option to shop without the worry of high prices.

MCC Pantry Coordinator Rikki Lee said that initially the pantry was located at QITE and now they have joined together to reopen the pantry.

“The pantry is to assist the most vulnerable people in the town that don’t have the money to move forward,” she said.

The pantry contains items from biscuits and noodles to baby wipes and baby formula, anything that a family could need can be found in the pantry.

MCC Front Office Coordinator Ashlee Wilkinson said that when the pantry was forced to shut down due to COVID MCC got a lot of feedback from those who utilised it.

One million Census forms and rising RESIDENTS across the country have been busily filling out their Census forms with more than one million forms already received by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), following a new rule that allows households to complete it prior to Census night.

This tally is solely based on online forms submitted by households through the Census website and does not represent the full tally with paper forms still to be included.

Census Executive Director and national spokesman Andrew Henderson said there are still many households to receive their census instructions.

“We are delighted with the participation we have received at this early stage,” he said.

“We expect the number of forms submitted daily to continue to grow between now and Census night.

“The tally of forms received will continue to grow steadily in the several weeks following Census night.”

The tally of forms submitted by households does not directly translate to a response rate, which is the proportion of the Australian population that has completed the Census.

The response rate, which is the official completion measure for the Census, will be determined after all forms have been submitted and quality checked.

This final response rate will be published with the first release of Census data in June 2022.

FIVE local firies have been recognised for their significant dedication to the Rural Fire Service (RFS) being awarded the National Emergency Medal in Mareeba during RFS Week recently.

The National Emergency Medal recognises those who have made an outstanding contribution to those in significant emergencies across the region.

The awards took place during RFS Week at the end of July, RFS Week recognises and celebrates the amazing work of the more than 30,000 RFS volunteers.

School goes back to the wild west

BENNY Blanco and his wild, wild western friends took over the Mareeba State High School (MSHS) sports hall over the weekend to host the school’s biennial Variety Show.

The show displayed the school’s talent in drama, music and dance, as well as the talent behind the scenes in lighting and sound.

“This production is about showcasing the talents of the students at MSHS and providing an opportunity for them all to come together and have a great show,” Director and Drama Teacher at MSHS Danielle Riding said.

“I wrote many of the scripts with the drama classes and we workshopped and developed them.

“The biggest highlight was seeing the student’s skills develop and become more profession in their acting skills.”

Grade 10 students and MC for the evening Ben Miles said that this production was one that he will surely remember.

“I think what made the show go so well was that everyone was happy to help each other and there was a great amount of cohesion between the actors and backstage,” he said.

“Everyone was there to help and support each other, it feels really great to be a part of some-

thing on this scale.

“My character is Benny Blanco, who was supposedly the hero but, in the end, we all know the real hero was the cow, Molasses.”

Backstage Manager (and Queen) Ms Annalisa Savaglio said this year was one of the smoothest.

“The cast and crew this year was amazing, they helped everything run like clockwork,” she said.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better cast this year.

“In the future I hope to see us in a purpose-built stage with the whole theater experience for the students.”

150 plus one years of Georgetown history

Etheridge Shire Council Mayor Barry Hughes is looking forward to Georgetown’s 150+1 years celebrations next week.

GEORGETOWN will be abuzz next weekend as they celebrate 150+1 years of the towns founding with three full days of jam packs events, activities and fun to be had.

Starting from Friday, August 20 and running until Sunday August 22, locals and visitors can experience things such as the street parade, markets, dinners and even historical tours of the town.

The celebration was meant to take place last year however due to COVID the anniversary was forced to be postponed, hence 150+1 years of Georgetown celebration.

Etheridge Shire Council Mayor Barry Hughes said there is a “buzz” in the region as the date for the celebrations draws nearer.

“There is a buzz in the air across the region as we draw

close to the date,” he said.

“A major milestone is about to be celebrated across many levels of the aspects of why we are who we are forged by our past.

“Like many centres dotted across the map of Northwest Queensland we owe our existence to early pioneers and the foresight and sacrifice that forged the pathways for the development of the township of Georgetown.”

Despite last year’s setback atmosphere has been ‘steadily’ building towards the celebrations as the committee makes their final preparations.

“Our community is very committed to delivering a great spectacle for not only the local community but also the travellers that will frequent the event,” Mayor Hughes said.

“Events that have been organised for the weekend include the

street parade and market stalls, renaming of the swimming pool to acknowledge the Dickenson family who were instrumental in getting it built in the first instance.

“Sporting and social events will be the order of the day over the weekend.”

To finish off Saturday’s festivities there will be the 150+1 years gala ball plus the Golden Jubilee Debutant ball.

BY SALLY TURLEY MILLAA MILLAA turned on the magic last weekend for one of her most successful export's big day. Mungalli Creek BioDynamic Dairy were celebrating the opening of their new capacity-doubling factory with a combined open day for their loyal shareholders.

Around 250 of the 460 Mungalli investors from around North Queensland, flocked to the opening of the $4.5 million production facility which was funded to the tune of $1.2 million dollars by the State Government and supported by over three quarters of a million dollars of crowd funding.

Guests were all treated to a welcome ice cream on arrival, factory tours and information sessions throughout the afternoon followed by cheese platters and beverages, live music and dinner around the camp fire.

The love and support for the Watson family was evident as guests soaked up the sunshine and the sustainable culture on offer at Mungalli.

The tour of the new facility revealed a cheese-making room populated by two new vats of 4000 and 6000 litre capacities, a new press and a new maturation room, upgrading it to a much better system than the old one, which Rob Watson said was "hard work."

The new extrusion blow molding machine which enables them to make their own bottles on-site, offered huge savings for the company, reducing freight

costs on the 50,000 full size bottles required daily from Brisbane by nearly 30c/bottle.

In addition, the complex has a labeling room, a bottling room and industrial washer, a yoghurt, ricotta, quark and cream manufacturing room, cold rooms and a loading dock as well as a system to capture solar and store it as refrigeration to power the air conditioners, milk vats and cold rooms.

Mr Watson said increased demand for product had driven their 180 cow dairy herd up to 650-700 head across their four farms and they sourced extra milk from five other local farmers, whose combined herd numbered 5-600 cows, achieving a 500% increase in production since 2000.

He said they were opening a new ice cream store in Cairns this month which would sell coffee in the mornings. Shareholders enjoyed sampling the new flavours developed for the market, including Coffee and Wattleseed, Vanilla with Raspberry and Fennel, Chocolate with Davison plum and Blueberry and Basil and Vanilla.

The Watson family's step up from Organic to Biodynamic seemed the natural progression in their dream to regenerate the earth. What does a building and pest inspection involve? A building inspection involves a thorough visual assessment of the property, including examining the structure and physical condition of the dwelling. Their concoctions are very dangerous to life and that is the very reason they are made, kill, kill, deadly poisons that are sprayed on food crops by the billions of tons worldwide and we wonder why people are getting sick. *To be Organic, the grower must prove his crops are free of these chemicals with carefully checked Certification, which is lost if they are found cheating. *To be Chemical Farmers each crop should have to show ‘The Chemicals Used’ on the food they grow, a full list of those Chemicals, to prove that it is true.

If Chemical Farmers and Growers really believe in what they are doing and what they are using they should have to show these Dangerous Poisons they use on the food packaging…. or is that far too frightening to contemplate.

What is good for the Goose is good for the Gander, as they say, and the public should be able to see what they are buying and eating.

The things we humans eat in this modern world is more related to how we are tempted by adverts on TV, more than what Nutritional Goodness OR Chemicals the food contains… the proof will probably manifest itself sometime many years ahead. Will it be good news or bad, longer life or shorter, healthier or propped up by drugs, painful or happy, these are the questions you must be asking yourself every day.

It is your choice my friend, but there are no guarantees because ‘The Clever People’ have already tainted our world, and now they should have to clean it up.

cups lukewarm

water teaspoons Dry Yeast ► 5½ cups all purpose flour ► 1 tablespoon Kosher salt ► 10 cloves garlic, minced ►2

Method

1. Fill a medium sized bowl with the water and sprinkle the yeast on top of it. Whisk the yeast until it’s dissolved. Add 3 cups of the flour and stir with a heavy spatula or wooden spoon until smooth.

2. Add the salt and then the remaining flour. Stir again until well combined.

Dust a clean work surface with some flour and dump out the dough.

Knead the dough dusting with more flour if things get sticky.

3. Once the dough is a round ball, place the dough back into the bowl.

Cover the dough and let rise in a warm area for 2-3 hours or until doubled in size. Once the dough is ready, preheat your oven to 200 degrees.

Place a pizza stone or a large upturned baking tray on the top shelf of the oven as it heats up. Dust it with a little of the cornflour. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and punch the air out of it. Cut the dough into 4 pieces.

4. Using your finger tips press each piece of dough into an oval shape.

Brush the dough with some olive oil and rub some minced garlic over the surface and sprinkle with the green onion and transfer to the pizza stone or baking tray.

Bake in the oven for about 8-10 minutes, longer if you like it more crusty.

Ladies call close on first season

THE Atherton Roosters Women’s side has pulled the curtain closed on their first ever season as they made history over the past few months being the clubs first ever women’s team to play in the CDRL competition.

This past season marks the first time that a women’s tackle division has been included in the regular CDRL season with six teams playing over 10 games.

Unfortunately, the Atherton Roosters ranked dead last after their last game against Yarrabah, however this did little to damper the ladies’ spirits.

player Kylie Willson said that despite some hiccups along the way the ladies got on the field for their first season.

“We have had our fair share of hurdles to overcome along the way,” she said.

“Being from a smaller population area and a rural setting compared to many of the other clubs in the competition it was hard to get the numbers required for a squad.

“We were met with some doubt that we would be able to field a side by some people in the other clubs, but after hosting some development sessions, advertising and a lot of hard work we had the num-

bers we needed to enter the competition.”

While Mareeba was unable to secure the numbers required to field their own women’s side the Atherton Roosters ladies welcomed them with open arms to ensure that those interested still got a chance to play.

Now the ladies will be taking a rest as they mark down the 2022 season on their calendars.

“There have been so many positives to come out of this season and we are really looking forward to what 2022 will look like to our team and our club.”

Jonty Taylor from Mareeba State School was awarded the player of the match and player’s player in Toowoomba at the recent Queensland School Football State Championships.

MAREEBA Bulls Under 12’s soccer star Jonty Taylor alongside two of his team mates have taken on the big stadium in Toowoomba for the Queensland State School Football State Championships, with Jonty taking out player of the match and the player’s player.

Jonty’s mother Natasha Taylor said that from a young age Jonty has always had a large passion for the game.

“Jonty has been playing football since he was four years old with Mareeba Bulls, he absolutely loves it,” Ms Taylor said.

“He trains all the time and when he is at home he is kicking balls against the brick wall or playing games against his brother.

“This year we took him

down for four days of trials and drills in Cairns with his school (Mareeba State School) and then ended up down in Toowoomba.”

After the four days of the freezing cold and challenging matches, Jonty took out the player of the match and the player’s player.

“It was pretty fun, we got to play against some really good teams,” Jonty said.

“There were some pretty tough games, mainly because it was freezing and raining on the first day.

“I had lots of fun playing left wing, right midfield and centre midfielder.”

Jonty will continue to play with the Bulls and hopes to continue playing soccer as a career in the future.

THE recent novelty round of men’s basketball kicked off in Mareeba with the younger players of the competition scooting up and down the floorboards in a free-flowing match.

The composition of each team was deliberately structured to place traditional teammate against teammate and explore new combinations of players to offset the current regular season format of just four teams.

A few of the big names of Ricaydan Wason, Craig Farley, Dean Gallo and Brennan Collis were solid, however, it truly was the other tier of player that ex-

celled on the night.

For team green, the performance of youngster Ethan Cummings was top shelf with Cummings blazing away from the three-point line and hustling relentlessly.

Guest coach Tyson Tatti pointed Cummings in the right direction and Luke Wainwright also stepped-up inside the paint.

Wainwright’s touch around the basket received accolades from the score bench and both coaches during the night.

Team black worked well for a newly assembled unit, with Kyll Wright and Ryan Mawds-

ley providing balance and passing which allowed Zac Myrteza and Dean Gallo to operate effectively inside.

The rebounding of these two inside players proved the difference on the night.

Wright also pretended to go big, blocking an Ethan Cummings’ would be lay-up and the roar of Wright could be heard in Burns Street.

Alfred Passi finished the night looking sharpest of all. His speed and match up adjustments in the open court brought an extra spark to the game.

New lessee for local pools THE Mareeba, Kuranda and Dimbulah pools will be coming under new management in September after Cotters Aquatic lost out on the leases after over a decade of management.

June Cotter has been man-

aging the Mareeba Pool for 14 years as well as the Kuranda Pool, Dimbulah Pool and Dimbulah Caravan Park.

Now Mareeba Shire Council has decided not to renew the current lease and will be going

with a new company yet to be announced.

An in-depth interview with the lady behind Cotters Aquatic, June Cotter, will take place in September after the new lessee takes over.

CENTRE Nigel Woodleigh and winger Ty Grogan both scored doubles in the Atherton Roosters 46-6 win over the Tully Tigers at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

The first grades win made it a clean sweep for the Roosters after winning the two earlier lower grade games.

After leading 24-6 at the break, the Roosters went onto score a further 22 unanswered points in the second stanza to wrap up the eight tries to one

victory.

Speedsters Woodleigh and Grogan were again at their best sparking the Roosters attack and troubling the Tully defence all night. Forward James Clark made a welcome return from injury for the Roosters while prop Matt Whybird capped off a strong game with a try at the 79th minute.

The Roosters under 18 side have driven further into the finals series following their 3418 win over Tully. Nelson Bob,

Keyarn Porter, Aiden Carson, Jayden Ives, Kaleb Nielson and Daniel Walker all scored four pointers for the Roosters.

The Roosters also won the reserve grade match 28-14 over Tully.

This weekend the Senior Roosters have the Cairns District Rugby League competition bye before hosting Innisfail in the annual John Cole Toyota Mayors Cup match on August 21.

Edmonton Storm rain on Gladiators parade

Mareeba Gladiators fullback Trezman Banjo eyeing the storm line last Saturday night.

THE Mareeba Gladiators were unable to secure back-to-back wins at home as they fell just short of the line going down to the Edmonton Storm 20-18 last Saturday night.

The home side was looking strong and convincingly dominated the first half with Mr reliable Clint Posselt pulling his signature dive from dummy half to give the Gladiators the first points of the game.

Edmonton didn’t sit idly by quickly answering back using

the speed of their wing as they broke through and secured their first try of the game.

Clint once again showing his grit putt the ball right back into Edmonton’s try zone with a quick break through the line.

A massive defensive effort by the Gladiators kept the fiery Storm at bay as they headed into the sheds for halftime.

Edmonton came out to play in the second half as they broke through the Gladiators line twice in quick succession securing two more tries.

A brilliant try on the Gladiators wing by Cedric Joe off the hands of Trezman Banjo pulled the Gladiators in front.

Edmonton then capitalised off a penalty slotting it between the posts and giving them a twopoint lead.

Gladiator Caleb Dally suffered a nasty hit that brought play to a stop as he was taken away in an ambulance with suspected nerve damage in his neck.

For the final minutes of the

game both teams were locked in a bitter struggle with the Gladiators time and time again knocking on the Storm’s door.

However, it was too little too late as the siren sounded giving Edmonton their two-point win over the Gladiators, 20-18.

Gladiators A grade captain/ coach Trent Barnard narrowed it down to possession with Edmonton controlling the ball for most of the game.

“We just didn’t have the footy, I’ve never seen a game so one sided before possession wise,” he said.

“When we got the pill the boys were so gassed from defending so well, I can’t believe the score is only two points they had so much footy.

“Caleb getting hit scared the boys a bit, it’s hard to come back from that and it scared me a lot.”

The Gladiators will now have a quick rest with a bye for this weekend as they prepare to host Suburbs at home on August 21.

Saddle up Mt Carbine

BULL and bronc riders from across the region are saddling up in preparation for the 20th annual Mt Carbine Bull and Bronc Ride this Saturday, August 14.

From the very first ride in May 2001, the event proved popular amongst the region, with 381 cowboys and cowgirls making their way through the gate.

Secretary of the Mount Carbine Rodeo Association Karen Pedersen told The Express that the first committee was formed in 1999 to start their very first bull ride.

“The people back in 1999 decided they wanted to get together and form a rodeo so they did that on July 5,” she said.

“They had a couple of fundraisers and then in 2001 we had the first bull ride at 12pm and had a band playing at night.

“Over $1500 was raised and donated to the Royal Flying Doctors Service and because they felt pretty successful, they continued to have more and then it became an annual thing.”

After four years of riding and

the popularity growing more and more, the committee decided to host their first night rides.

“In 2004 we decided to trial a night time ride, so we hired lights and it was a success and since then we’ve had the night time ride starting at 5pm,” Mrs Pedersen said.

“Since then we have had the same annual night time bull rides and now we have the bronc’s as well.”

Now 20 years on, Mrs Pedersen said the event will recognise one of the committee's first members with a new trophy up for grabs.

“We are going to have one of the original committee members Dennis Ross’, now deceased, two granddaughters singing on the night as a tribute,” she said.

“We also have a special Dennis Ross Memorial Trophy that will be awarded on the night to the juvenile winner.”

After last year's cancellation due to COVID, Mrs Pedersen and the Rodeo Association hopes to see this year's events up and running, with only a few changes including signing in with the

Mrs Pedersen said that in the future she hopes to see more young people getting involved as volunteers and committee members to keep Mt Carbine on the calendar each year.

“I think it's really good having the bull ride run for the last 20 years, it's a credit to the members of the association and also to the volunteers we have every year,” she said.

“We have at least 90 volunteers a year to help on the night and without them we wouldn’t be able to run such a successful event.

“Hopefully we get more young people to come onto the committee and take on the roles of us oldies in the future.”
