Plaques restored at Rocky Creek SIXTEEN unit plaques have undergone refurbishment at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park to better preserve wartime heritage and understand the role servicemen and women played in shaping our nation.

Rocky Creek was the site of the largest military hospital

in the southern hemisphere; the first plaques that were installed were dedicated to Victory in the Pacific Day in 1955 and in 2009 a special wall of remembrance was erected.

More than 115 memorial plaques at Rocky Creek recognise the 6th, 7th and 9th Division AIF and supporting units.

The main plaque area is home to plaques for military units stationed on the Atherton Tablelands during WWII while plaques for other military units, groups and organisations are located in the allied and community plaque area.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti was

honoured to be able to get the plaques restored.

“This special project has achieved an outcome staff and community alike can be proud of,” he said.

“We encourage you to head to the memorial plaque to pay your respects and see the restored plaques.”

Community push back over TRC caravan park decision PUSH BACK: Council underestimated the level of concern and community push back in Malanda over the decision to lease out the Caravan Park to a commercial operator.

MALANDA residents shocked

by The Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) decision to lease out the Malanda Caravan Park to a commercial operator have decided to push back.

At the TRC ordinary council meeting on Thursday, November 26, Council discussed the future of the caravan park with

Mayor Rod Marti saying “We are not in the caravan park business.”

The Malanda Caravan Park has been owned and run by the TRC for the past 20 years with Council claiming it was costing on average $125,000 per year to keep the park open.

cided to push back, with a community meeting being held at the Malanda Hotel on Wednesday December 1.

President of the Malanda Chamber of Commerce Jeanette Suffield said the local community were not happy.

“The Malanda community are not happy and we are look-

An online petition has also been launched in the hope of getting the TRC to reverse their decision.

Matt Lachlan who launched the change.org petition said that he believes that The Malanda Falls Caravan Park is a critically important asset for the local community.

“This decision has been made as TRC claims it has cost council $200,000 year to maintain the park,” he said.

“What TRC clearly have not accounted for is the huge investment this park brings to the region. The caretakers Janine and Rob have, for years, passionately promote the Tablelands and have advocated for and supported local businesses.

“This park offers something truly unique - a beautiful park with stunning wildlife and scenery, a park where kids are free to be kids, where people can set up camp where they choose and truly unwind for a few days or longer.

“The park has amazingly diverse wildlife, including our

threatened local icon the Tree Kangaroo.”

Mr Lachlan said he is worried that a commercial operator may make changes that could destroy the appeal of the park.

“Installing numbered, designated camp sites, and putting profit before community will forever change Malanda and is something we as residents and tourist alike must stand up for,” he said. “Tablelands Regional Council are elected to represent and act in the best interests of the community, this decision is a monumental failure of that duty and must be reversed.”

Rob and Janine Rielly have managed the park since February 2015 and said that they have been blown away by the support from the local community. “I think it’s amazing that we have such an amazing community who want to get behind and support the caravan park,” Janine said.

“It’s good to see the local community is passionate about who ends up running the park.

“They want someone who is as passionate about the caravan park as they are.”

Janine said she wasn’t sure yet if they would apply for the tender of the park.

“We just don’t know yet as we will have to wait and see what terms and conditions there will be.”

Member for Cook makes history ON Wednesday, December 2, Member for Cook Cynthia Lui became the acting Deputy Speaker in Queensland parliament.

It’s the first time in Queensland history that a First Nations person has taken the Speaker’s Chair.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was one of the first to congratulate Ms Lui “We’re so proud of moments like these and to have three First Nations members in the Palaszczuk Government,” she said.

Minister for Communities and Housing and proud Quandamooka woman Leeanne Enoch also posted congratulations on social media. “Today, for the first time in the history of the Queensland Parliament a First Nations person took the Speaker’s seat as an acting Deputy Speaker chairing proceedings of the House,” she said.

“With three First Nations

people in Qld Parliament and all three taking on important roles, it’s obvious things are beginning to change.

“Congratulations Cynthia Lu on this history making moment.”

Ms Lui said about the honour “It was a huge honour and privilege to take the Speaker’s seat today for the first time as acting Deputy Speaker to chair the proceedings of the House,” she said.

“The Palaszczuk Government is paving the way for change in Queensland as this is the first time you will see three First Nations people elected into Parliament at the same time and in roles of Cabinet Minister, Assistant Minister and Acting Deputy Speaker.

“I feel extremely proud to be part of the Palaszczuk Labor Government and to write this new chapter in Queensland history.”

A MAREEBA resident who has to go to Atherton twice a week for dialysis said he is sick and tired of the travelling when there is a hospital five minutes away that could provide the essential service.

Paul McGregor–Jones started dialysis about 18 months ago, originally travelling to Cairns twice a week as the dialysis chairs in Atherton were all booked out.

At the time it was a six hour round trip which Paul said took up a lot of his en-

ergy.

“I’m 77 and I had to get a cab to Cairns, the driver then had to wait for me for four hours and then drive me home, it cost over 400 dollars per day,” he said.

“It was a waste of time and money.

“If they had a couple of dialysis chairs in Mareeba, it would actually save the government money.”

Due to a chair becoming available, Mr Jones now travels to the Atherton Hospital

twice a week Mr Jones said it’s not just about the patients.

“A lot of people have carers or partners so that means they have to come to the hospital and wait between four to five hours as well,” he said.

As reported in last weeks Express Newspaper, The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) admitted that there were two dialysis chairs sitting at the Lotus Glen correctional facility doing nothing.

“We hear all these promises about improving health and they have two chairs sitting in the jail empty doing nothing,” Mr Jones said.

“It’s just ridiculous that they are sitting there doing nothing.

“There are at least 13 people travelling from Mareeba to Atherton two to three times a week with drivers, or carers or their partners. It’s just a waste of time and money for everyone.”

Mr Jones said that if they had dialysis chairs in Mareeba it would help Atherton Hospital.

“It would relieve the pressure as there are people on the waiting list to get into Atherton.

“It would save me 4 hours a week, if they had a chair in Mareeba and I only go twice a week. I feel sorry for the people who have to travel further and more often.

“Some people have to spend five hours in the chair add on travel time and it’s a whole day wasted.”

Mr Jones also had a few words to say to local politicians.

“We haven’t heard much from our local member, she hasn’t said boo about this,” he said.

“She seems to live in Cairns and that’s her place.”

QLD Budget gets mixed response The long-awaited 20/21 Queensland Budget that was tabled in State Parliament last week has received mixed reviews. While politicians are calling the budget a success, business groups say more needs to be done.

IN light of the COVID pandemic, Australia’s recession and high unemployment the recent Queensland budget has been seen as hit and miss for the Tablelands and the Far North.

Some of the spending highlights in Cook include $3M for splash parks in Mareeba and Port Douglas, $1.1M for the Wujal Wujal Primary Health Care Centre, $6.8M for the redevelopment of the Thursday Island hospital and the Aurukun State School has received $3M for the replacement of an administration block.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin said, “Council is happy to receive funding for the splash park and we look forward to receiving further details about the project,” she said.

“Council is delighted to see the Works for Queensland funding continue and also funds allocated to improve road infrastructure.

“We will continue to advocate for funding and work with the State Government to improve the liveability for residents across the Shire.”

In Hill, the budget will deliver more than $6m in funding to various schools in the electorate, including $270,000 for Innisfail State College, $1.1M for Atherton State High School, more than $1M for Ravenshoe State School, $205,000 for Babinda State School, $713,000 for Walkamin State School and $400,000 for Goondi State School.

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said the 2020/2021 State Budget delivered critical funding for the Electorate of Hill with roads, schools and community groups set to benefit but there was still more that needed to be done.

“I am pleased to see plenty of road works in the Hill Electorate, which is great news for local jobs and delivering safer and more efficient roads.

“More than $200M has been budgeted for roads in the Hill Electorate, which includes $7M

for Boogan Road, $6M for the East Feluga/Bruce Highway intersection, $18m for the Gillies Range and $12m for the Burke Development Road from Dimbulah to Normanton.

“Many of these road projects are a direct result of locals raising the issue.”

In the next year’s budget, he said he would continue to push for more funding for the region, especially for water infrastructure.

“This budget allocated $13.324M towards the Mareeba-Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme efficiency improvement project,” he said.

While the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) said that the 2020-21 failed to deliver the immediate measures needed to protect business ahead of the looming economic cliff.

CCIQ economist Jack Baxter said that despite increased borrowings, there was a missed opportunity for immediate measures to assist small businesses over what is expected to be a tough recovery.

“Leading into the election CCIQ called for targeted measures to accelerate businesses to diversify and grow,” Mr Baxter said.

“The budget included the $500 million for the Backing Small Business Fund which is welcomed as it provides targeted investment to established businesses to invest in capital to expand, scale and grow.

“However, how many business could benefit from the fund and the details of how it will be accessed, are yet to be fully understood.

“Outside of that though the budget does not provide any further immediate support for small businesses to keep people in jobs and insulate businesses over what will be a critical next six months as JobKeeper ends.

“The information that we received from the budget today has not provided any new or immediate measures to small business.”

Mr Baxter said that the budget was heavily focussed on infrastructure.

“The immediate lack of support to SMEs will leave a crosssection of sectors exposed to the ongoing challenges in the business environment,” he said.

“As it’s crucial to remember business confidence was at alltime lows before COVID, we fear that we are falling back into old habits by remaining negligent to what is truly needed by the small business sector to recover and thrive.”

Vice President of the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) Christine Doan said that they agree with Shane Knuth.

“We agree with Mr Knuth about the positives such as funding increases for roads and high schools for Hill,” she said.

“However, we face a potential dive off an economic cliff due to COVID which requires forward planning and budgeting and we wanted to see more support for small businesses in particular.

“We would like to see more support for tourism and for ensuring that our region’s most prized tourist attractions, the reef and the rainforest, do not deteriorate further.”

Ms Doan also said that the Queensland Government should prioritise locals when building works start on the Tablelands.

“We also wanted a few specifics for our local economy and the many and varied businesses that ATCC barracks for including incentivising local procurement; creating Queensland specific programs which promote the future viability of rural and regional economies,” she said.

“There’s also the old problem of what to do about the range roads and the improvement of water infrastructure in a future oriented way that does not rob Peter to pay Paul.”

Be bat aware

LOCALS are being urged to avoid bats, following a spike in the numbers of people being bitten and scratched by the animals across the region.

38 people have presented to health services with bat related injuries across the Cairns and Hinterland region since the start of the year.

Tropical Public Health Services Cairns public health medical officer, Dr Annie PrestonThomas, said with it currently being peak breeding season for bats across the Far North, there was potential for people to have more encounters with them and therefore expose themselves to dangerous diseases.

“Breeding season for our bats usually starts around September and can last until January,” she said. “Right now, there is a lot of bat activity in people’s backyards, local parks, and rainforest areas. “People need to know what to do – and what not to do – if they encounter a sick or injured bat.”

Dr Preston-Thomas said while catching diseases directly from flying foxes was rare, they were known to carry the life-

threatening virus Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV).

“ABLV is an infection similar to rabies, which can be transmitted through a bat bite or scratch, or possibly through exposure of the eyes, nose or mouth to bat saliva.

“If bats are acting in a strange manner, they are more likely to be infected with the virus. “Even bats that appear healthy may be infected, so it is important not to handle bats.”

Dr Preston-Thomas advised people to contact a wildlife carer if they spotted a sick or injured bat and wanted to help it.

“Bats can bite through fabrics that people might use to pick them up,” she said.

“Trained bat carers have the right protective equipment and should be vaccinated against rabies,” she said.

“All bat scratches and bites require treatment as soon as possible, to guard against the development of ABLV. “Although vaccination should be given as soon after exposure as possible, it is still beneficial later as the disease can take years to develop.”

BAT AWARE: Director of the Tolga Bat Hospital Jennefer Mclean said there are plenty of bats being caught on barbed wire fences at the moment.

“Please ring us if you see a bat that needs rescuing, either on a barbed wire fence or they may be on the ground due to tick paralysis,” she said.

“It’s also baby season so you may see lone babies on the ground. “The best thing to do is call us as we have people all over the Tablelands that are trained to help.

“But if you do get bitten or scratched the good news is that the Atherton Hospital has the rabies vaccine.”

If available, apply an antiseptic such as Betadine after washing. If bat saliva has got into your eyes, nose or mouth, flush the area thoroughly with water. Contact a doctor to arrange anti-rabies vaccination, ideally the same day.

in June of this year.

The club had been struggling for several years and staff were mainly members and volunteers.

At the time the club’s President Darryl Cummings said “These days with COVID it hasn’t been financially viable for us run the club so it would be better for us to lease the premises to someone.”

That person is Michelle Oliver and her husband Jacob who have now opened their Country Roads Kitchen inside the Malanda RSL. Their journey into the kitchen started this year when Michelle and her husband decided to buy a food van.

“We bought a food van in

January that needed a heap of work and just as we were set to start selling food COVID hit,” she said.

“We didn’t start selling food until the middle of August and then we couldn’t get into markets.

“Finally we got a place at Tarzali and we started selling our food on the side of the road and then we then had to move from that site.”

Michelle said that when the guys at the Malanda RSL heard they were closing up their food van they rang and to see if the couple would be interested in running the RSL’s kitchen.

“Because we had nothing to lose, we thought we would give it a shot and we have now been

here for four weeks,” Michelle said.

“We do pub style meals, like fish and chips, steaks and burgers; it’s all good pub grub.”

“We now have barista coffee and we source as much of our stock from local suppliers as we can.”

Michelle admits it has been a steep learning curve.

“It’s been pretty quiet due to COVID, which has given us time to learn and ramp up,” she said.

“We want our food to be fresh and good value.”

The Country Roads Kitchen is open Wednesday to Sunday at the Malanda RSL.

Although branded as Virgin, the ATR model of aircraft was removed from Virgin’s active fleet in August of 2020, as a part of their plan to simplify their fleet. The planes were then returned to the registration holder who originally leased the planes to Virgin.

Aviation Airframe Holding, a private limited company from Singapore is the registration holders and is currently storing six of the ATR aircraft at the Mareeba Airport.

Kris Taute, the Public Affairs Manager for Virgin Australia, stated that while the planes are branded as Virgin aircraft they are no longer in use by the airline.

“In August, Virgin Australia said it would remove the ATR aircraft type from its fleet,” he said.

“It’s understood the aircraft stored at Mareeba have been

returned to their registered owners and will remain painted in Virgin livery until such time they find a new home.”

Eight ATR aircraft were decommissioned by Virgin, six are being stored at the Mareeba Airport and the location of the remaining two is unknown.

A spokesperson from Mareeba Shire Council has said that the planes are being temporarily stored until the registration holders decide what to do with them.

“Council has approved parking for six aircraft and are working with the company to

potentially accommodate more, this is being done without impacting operations and safety,” they said.

“The aircraft parked at Mareeba Airport are there for short-term storage.

“It is important to note that Council probably couldn’t have accommodated these aircraft prior to the Airport Upgrade and Council is pleased to see Airport being utilised.”

The Express Newspaper was unable to contact Aviation Airframe Holding for comment.

Herberton ready to celebrate WITH Christmas only two weeks away, the Annual Herberton Twilight Christmas Markets are happening again this Saturday, December 12 with a special visit from Santa and his naughty donkeys.

The event kicks off from 3pm and kids will be able to get the photos taken with Santa and his donkeys at the Tin Town Sweets and Lolly Shop Café as well as the Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway.

“The Tablelands United Bagpipers will be down near the station and Santa will be arriving on the Tin-lander at 4.30pm,” she said.

will be cooking up a storm.

“We really want people to come join us for our bush Christmas and we will also be having raffles for the CWA, the RFDS and The Hospital Auxiliary.”

THE Atherton Lions have decided to give a helping hand this Christmas by donating a cheque for $2000 to the Tablelands Re-

gional Council (TRC) Mayors Christmas Appeal.

The appeal seeks to assist those within the TRC commu-

nity who may be doing it rough and provide them with the assistance they need.

The money donated was raised on Friday, November 27 when TRC Mayor Rod Marti joined Atherton Lions in selling their tickets for their monthly Mega Meat Tray Raffle with the donation being made last Wednesday, December 2.

Atherton Lions President Mil Clay said that Lions donated this cheque to give back to the community that they raised money through.

“We do the raffle and we are raising money through the community and we like to put it back into the community,” he said.

“At this time of the year you have to be aware of all those that are less fortunate than a lot of us.

“Because this was so successful we are going to set it in place that when we do the meat tray raffle the proceeds go to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.”

Christmas markets perfect for gifts THE Atherton Lions are once again hosting their annual indoor Christmas markets at the Merriland Hall on Sunday, 13 December.

The markets are a chance to grab perfect local Christmas gifts with the markets sporting goods like plants, jewellery, collectables and gemstones.

Starting from 7am and running until noon the markets will

be filled with around 40 store holders some of which have been involved in the markets since they started in 2013.

Atherton Lions President and market organiser Mil Clay is excited to host the Christmas markets again this year and is expecting a good turnout.

Kuranda spikes in suicides ACCORDING to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) the areas of Kuranda, Speewah and Koah had the third highest suicide rate in Queensland. Between 2005 and 2019, 52 suicide deaths were reported at rate of 26.9 per 100,000 people.

Nearly 4000 Queenslanders took their own lives in the five years from 2015 and 2019 with Queensland having 10 out of the top 20 regions in Australia for suicide rates.

Cairns & Hinterland Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs (MHATOD) Service clinical director Dr Mike Tervit said “The Cairns and Hinterland Mental

Health Alcohol and Other Drugs (MHATOD) Service has a mental health service team based in Mareeba and Kuranda that provides support and services to these communities in the form of crisis support, mental health assessments and brief intervention,” he said.

“The team is comprised of consultant psychiatrists, psychiatric registrars, mental health nurses and allied health clinicians, including psychologist and social workers. The team services both the adult and child and youth population in these communities.

“Additional child and youth support, specific to Kuranda is

provided by the Cairns Child and Youth Mental Health Service.

The 1300 MH CALL (1300 642 255) number is available 24 hrs for referrals to the Cairns and Hinterland MHATOD Service.

“Alternatively, people can present to their local rural Hospital Emergency Department.”

CHHHS have also announced that their Tackling Regional Adversity through Integrated Care (TRAIC) suicide prevention grants program is being launched in early 2021 in the Mareeba Shire area. This program aims to strengthen the community’s capacity to better identify and respond to young people at risk of suicide.

The program will provide training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Deadly Thinking and Safe TALK for professionals working in youth support and active community members such as sports coaches and managers.

In addition to this, the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service in partnership with Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) is in the planning stages to establish a model of service delivery to provide specialised mental health responses to people experiencing a mental health crisis (QAS Mental Health Co-Responder Model)

whereby a Mental Health Practitioner will accompany QAS officers to treat patients experiencing an actual or suspected mental health condition.

It is anticipated that the service will commence in the Cairns and Hinterland region from early 2021 Dr Mike Tervit said “We encourage the community to contact the support services that are available if they themselves are feeling vulnerable or distressed or if they are concerned about someone or know of someone who may be at risk. There is help available.”

“This reflects that suicide is not just a health issue; it is a whole of community issue. As individuals, we all have a role to play in checking if someone is ok,” said Dr Trevit.

Microgrid studies for remote communities

COMMUNITIES across Cape York and the Torres Strait could benefit from more secure, affordable and reliable energy with the second round of the Regional and Remote Communities Reliability Fund being announced.

The second round opens on Wednesday, December 16 with successful projects getting the chance to share in a $25 million pool.

The program aims to fund feasibility studies that will examine the electrical supply needs of regional and remote communities and decide whether establishing a microgrid or upgrading existing off-grid technologies is more suitable.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said that the Daintree community is well-advanced in establishing a microgrid in the region after receiving funding in the first round of the program.

“We need to be looking at options that will help lower cost of living pressures on families and businesses in not only the cities but in the regions as well as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

“Microgrids can help reduce electricity bills for regional and

remote communities and deliver benefits for the grid as a whole by saving hundreds of millions of dollars in network costs.”

“Microgrid technology is becoming increasingly cost effective, creating the opportunity for a reliable, low cost, off-grid supply to our regional communities and industries,” Mr Taylor said.

“This funding will enable many communities to realise the potential to harness innovative technologies or distributed energy resources, like solar and batteries, or reduce their reliance on costly diesel generation.

“This is an important part of our commitment to creating jobs and driving economic growth in our regions.”

Customer service proves a winner for new business A COUPLE from Yungaburra who moved to Normanton 18 months ago to start their very own business have now won a state-wide award for customer service.

Joseph Rainbow and Annie Cork started Gulf Containers for Change (Gulf C4C) in Normanton last year after realising that they had to bring all of their empty cans and bottles from the gulf all the way to Mareeba for recycling.

The idea dawned on them that nobody was running a containers for change depot in the Gulf.

Their business has now been running for 12 months, employs seven people and has put around half a million dollars back into the community.

Last month they were announced as a winners of a ‘Change Maker Award’ for providing the ‘Best Customer Focus’ for small to medium businesses in Container Refund Points (CRPs) across Queensland.

Annie said they won the award because they were willing to travel where nobody else would.

“The reason we won is because we supply services other depots aren’t supplying, like going to remote areas and collecting from individual people, looking after the elderly as

well as visiting people in very remote areas like Burketown, Gregory and the Burke and Wills Roadhouse.” she said.

“We are a new business in a remote area, we provide employment for local indigenous people and we recycle so we tick a lot of boxes.

“We go to remote homes and businesses to collect their recycling, then we bring it back to our depot in Normanton and we put the money straight into their back account.

“When we go out to those more-remote places, we do a personalised service as there are a lot elderly people who we don’t really want to have to drive all the way into Normanton.”

Currently Annie’s business covers the Carpentaria, Burke and Croydon Shires and they are now looking to expand into the Etheridge Shire.

“A lot of the money gets donated to the RFDS, the RSPCA and local schools,” she said.

“We have to thank all the local residents and councils for coming on board and embracing us.”

A spokesperson for Container Exchange said that Annie’s business covers an area that measures 133,304 square kilometres.

Christmas party in honour of a princess

Only weeks left in Mareeba Lions Christmas raffle THE Mareeba Lions Christmas Raffle has been underway since October with a new twist thrown in to better support local businesses.

Every year Mareeba Lions asks businesses to donate prizes for their Christmas raffle, however due to the economic impacts of COVID they felt there was another way.

Instead of asking for donations they purchased the prizes for the raffle from local businesses to better stimulate the economy and keep money flowing through the town.

Although businesses were informed of this some still decided to donate prizes despite the offer to purchase them.

Mareeba Lions Raffle Coordinator Tom Braes said that this year’s raffle is different to previous years due to COVID. “Although the prizes are not as extensive as the past there are still valuable prizes to be won,” he said.

“Instead of the usual six winners we will be drawing around 20 to 30 winners to receive the vouchers.

“We are doing it differently to give our donors a bit of a break.”

The winners of the Mareeba Lions Christmas Raffle will be notified by phone immediately when they get drawn on December 21.

Princess Naomi who passed away this year and was the inspiration behind the Princess Cups charity.

A NEW local charity that’s sells ‘Princess Cups’ has been formed as a way to raise money for childhood cancer and leukaemia research.

The charity was founded by Tablelands local Maggie Hodge after she tragically lost her three year old princess Naomi in July of this year.

Maggie said as a mother in the oncology ward she could see firsthand where more funding would have been beneficial.

“The treatment that Naomi was offered was over 20 years old,” she said.

“This is what inspired The Princess Cups Charity, raising money so we can help find a cure so no other child has to grow up in a hospital bed.”

Naomi was first diagnosed with AML leukaemia in 2018 at only 17 months old, after 6 rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant she passed away on July 21, 2020.

Shortly after her daughters passing Maggie started a charity in her honour. Princess Cups was created to help raise money by selling hot and cold person-

alised reusable coffee cups. The original idea has now inspired a community Christmas Party that will be held on December 20 at the International club in Atherton.

Maggie said the party is for herself and Naomi’s dad Mark to share their first Christmas without their princess. “We want to share Christmas with the community that has only ever supported and assisted our horrific journey,” she said “The Christmas party will be a way to thank everyone for all their support by having lucky door prizes, a raffle draw, a slideshow of Princess’s journey, the brief history of Princess Cups and a small award ceremony to thank everyone involved in the Princess Cup charity.”

All money raised goes to Childhood Cancer and Leukaemia Research.

The event will be held at the International Club in Atherton; cost is $45 and includes a buffet dinner, entry to the evening and a ticket in the door prize.

New brochures for proposed Seven Sisters Cycleway

BY RHYS THOMAS THE Atherton Rotary club has decided to throw their support behind the proposed Seven Sisters Cycleway and has produced brochures about the Pinnacle Pocket and Seven Sisters Cycleway.

The proposed Seven Sisters Cycleway is a 70+km loop of mountain biking and walking trails in and around the southern Tablelands area.

Tablelands Regional Council has agreed to provide principal support for the cycleway however a more detailed report which needs to include costings will need to be presented to council before any further development.

Funding and maintenance for the trail must also fall on the Sixty and Overs (SAOs) cycling club who initially put forward

the proposal at last month’s council meeting.

Atherton Rotary President Mick Brzozowski wanted to use the brochures as a way to inform the community about the proposed cycleway and its benefits.

“Atherton Rotary has decided to get involved to help promote this cycleway and activities for young families and people to go on these rides and walks,” he said.

“We have helped by donating money for brochures to be developed advertising this proposal and its benefits.

“We are trying to help with the mental health and wellbeing of people and by doing this advertising so people know about it, they too can get out there and explore locally.”

Confusion over Christmas shopping hours QUEENSLANDERS in 16 major regional centres have been warned to brace for an unprecedented four-day closure, as a result of the state’s antiquated trading hours laws.

Because of how the gazetted public holidays fall in 2020, major stores in regional areas will be forced to shut their doors at 6pm on Thursday, December 24, instead of the normal 9pm close.

They won’t be allowed to reopen them until Tuesday morning, December 29.

The affected towns include major tourist centres and regional hubs, such as Ayr, Mission Beach, Proserpine, Mt Isa, Kingaroy and Wiepa.

In previous years, the National Retail Association (NRA) has applied to the Queensland Industrial Relations Commis-

sion for a special order to allow trading on the Sunday and avoid a four-day closure. However, the Government has enacted a five-year freeze on any QIRC trading hours applications, meaning there is no avenue to assist regional Queenslanders.

NRA Manager, Industry Policy, David Stout said the fourday closure would be extremely inconvenient for consumers, but even worse – a massive drain on employment creation in regional areas.

“This four-day forced closure could not come at a worse time for regional centres that have struggled throughout the year with COVID and the lack of visitors,” Mr Stout said, “Christmas trading is the time when so many people have normal expenses, and workers

are looking for every opportunity to pick up extra shifts to help make ends meet.

“For shoppers, being locked out of supermarkets and department stores at one of the busiest times of the year is extremely inconvenient. And in the past we’ve seen that inconvenience turn to crisis when the forced shutdown coincides with a natural disaster and people are prevented from stocking up on essential items.

“Retailers had hoped the Minister might step in and help resolve the issue. There were a number of solutions, which including changing the public holiday designations in those centres, passing legislation or regulation to allow stores to open on either December 26 or 28, or allowing one-off Sunday

trading in those centres on the 27th.

“However, there doesn’t seem to be either the time or the political interest to fix the problem.”

Mr Stout said the closure – which would occur again next year if nothing is done – was a perfect example of why Queensland needed proper trading hours reform.

“Some years ago, this Government commission Prof John Mickel to undertake a comprehensive investigation into retail trading hours, and he produced an outstanding and balanced report,” he said.

“Sadly though, his recommendations were cherry-picked, leading to a range of policy and operational anomalies such as this one.

“Queensland has the most archaic, complex and inconsistent trading hours laws in Australia.

The state has several different trading hours zones, each with its own different set of rules. If COVID has taught us anything, is that we need to have access to the most convenient locations.”

“In terms of why there are different zones, it’s in large part due to QLD having a large geographically diverse state,” he said.

“Tourist destinations such as the Gold Coast or a metropolitan city such as Brisbane are going to have different levels of consumer demand to say a small, regional town.

“In terms of what rules apply to what stores, this is where it gets quite complicated.”

Community helps give sisters early Christmas

MAREEBA’S Nate Moule has been fighting a battle against malignant brain tumours since his birth and is always at the forefront of his families concerns.

On Friday however his sisters, Georgia and Jessica Brettell were the ones in the spotlight with a plethora of presents being gifted to them from businesses in

Mareeba and Cairns.

Mum Katie Moule said that her daughters have been doing it just as tough through Nate’s journey.

“My girls have been the forgotten ones over the last two years while Nate has been incredibly spoilt,” she said.

“It’s about spoiling the girls

and making sure they have a great Christmas.

“Nate’s health has deteriorated a lot so it was mainly supporting the girls through this really hard time and uplift their spirits.”

The day was made extra special as Friday was also Georgia’s 17th birthday.

A CONTINGENT of concerned locals got together on Sunday to tackle the Amazon Frogbit problem hands on.

Bill Eaton’s property in Mareeba backs onto the Atherton Creek which has become so clogged with the invasive weed Amazon Frogbit that his water pump was blocked and he decided something needed to be done.

On November 29, friends and family got together to start removing Frogbit from the parts of the creek that back onto Mr Eaton’s property.

“In about two hours, seven of us had removed an area about half the size of a tennis court,” he said.

“Now you can see fish returning and the water is clear once again.

The following weekend (December 6) 10 people got together and removed even more of the Frogbit from Atherton Creek The last two weekends led to the idea of a grassroots community who get together to remove Frogbit from their local waterway, Bill is now interested in removing more Frogbit further afield in the Atherton Creek and slowly working towards the causeway.

Mr Eaton said “If we can do it anyone can, we have a five year old who is helping us out,” he said.

“If we all get together and start pulling out the weed, hopefully it will become more of a maintenance issue rather than a full blown problem.”

mann said it was great to see so many people helping out.

“Now we want to get a list of interested people, so we can let them know the next time we are having a combined working bee in a creek or in one of the local gardens,” she said.

“If we don’t all start working together all the water pumps will block up and then we will have much bigger and more expensive problems later.

“We are now just looking at gauging community interest.”

The next working bee to remove Frogbit from the Atherton Creek is this Sunday, December 13.

Remote students learn about media

STUDENTS from Wujal Wujal, Kowanyama, Doomadgee and Lockhart River recently gathered in Cairns to start accredited radio training that will enable them to pursue exciting media careers in the future.

The students are currently participating in the first of four two-week blocks of practical radio training with North Regional TAFE QLD in conjunction with Queensland Remote Aboriginal Media (QRAM).

The course started in November and will end in May 2021 with students being given the opportunity to study radio and media after answering a QRAM expression of

interest.

QRAM General Manager Candice Siedler-Twine said 11 students are working towards Certificate III in Media (Radio), a nationally recognised course that will allow them to pursue a career as a radio announcer or producer.

“Students are studying at the TAFE campus and at the Black Star 96.7FM Radio Studios at QRAM, learning highly practical skills such as content gathering, presentation, interviewing and announcing skills as well as leaning about Australian strict broadcasting regulations,” Mrs Siedler-Twine said.

“They’re also getting a unique chance working with

our dedicated and experienced team in the use of specialised studio software and equipment and are receiving work experience in a live studio.

“They are working towards becoming an announcer in their local community as part of our Black Star network that transmits into 19 sites across the Northern Peninsula Area, the Cape, the Gulf of Carpentaria, Cooktown, the Tablelands, Yarrabah and Woorabinda.”

Ben Whittle 34, from Yarrabah said is happy to be doing the course and learning new media skills.

“It’s great to be able to add a qualification to the resume, it will help get a new radio station up and running in the Yarrabah community,” he said “There’s a few of us doing the course, so that we can have a team of qualified radio presenters to be able to present on a local radio station.

Ben has been working in social housing for the past six years and said that his new found media skills will help him present important information about housing to local communities.

“The best thing about radio is that it’s a great way to highlight positivity throughout the community and share stories,” he said.

“Some of the skills that I have learnt so far include how to interview, how to create a program, and what is suitable to be presented on air.”

TRC Recycling on hold SINCE the start of the COVID pandemic, The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has ceased sending their kerbside recycling to recycling plants and instead has been putting the recycling into local landfill without any public consultation.

A council insider who did not want to be named approached The Express claiming that a minimum of 25 tonnes per week of kerbside recycling was going straight into landfill at Springmount.

“They have not been sending the recycling away to Cairns or Brisbane like they should,” they said.

“At one stage all the recycling was being recorded as wet waste so they didn’t have to record that recycling was going into landfill.”

“They haven’t switched on the materials recovery facility (MRF) since about March.”

According to the TRC website “We operate an MRF at the Atherton Transfer Station. This facility is the only one of its kind in regional Queensland, and is the specialised facility that receives, separates and prepares recyclable materials for further processing.”

“The MRF accepts the recyclable materials that are placed in the household recycle bin (yellow lid) or in the large recycle skip bins at our transfer stations.”

While other local councils have made no changes to their recycling or waste practices due to COVID, Mark Vis, General Manager Infrastructure and Planning at the TRC admitted that the MRF was closed earlier

this year because of high contamination levels increasing the COVID contamination risk to TRC employees.

“Contamination levels are expected to have improved and we are presenting a report to Council at the December meeting regarding future options for the MRF,” Mr Vis said “Kerbside recycling is going to landfill. Clean stream recycling is still being collected, baled and sent for processing. (steal and cardboard) In September 2020 the TRC received a grant from the state government to help with the transport costs of moving recycling to Brisbane.

The $46,000 grant was provided by the Department of Environment and Science under the Regional Recycling Transport Assistance Package.

The money is to be used by the TRC to fully cover the recycling transport cost for 12 months.

Mr Vis said “As per the grant conditions, this money is being used to transport cardboard to Brisbane and further initiatives in the New Year regarding future options for the MRF.” As for the why the truck drivers were told to record recydling as wet waste Mr Vis said it was a mistake that has now been rectified.

“When the MRF closed, the kerbside recycle trucks were advised to treat the recycle collection as general wet waste so they knew the destination for the waste was the wet waste pit for sending onto Springmount landfill,” he said. “The recy-

cle truck’s registration number is registered when the load is measured on the gatehouse weighbridge and that is what identifies it as kerbside recycling and then reported through to DES as part of our regulatory reporting.

“When we became aware of this misunderstanding three weeks ago, we clarified to the drivers that the recycling trucks should still report at the gatehouse as recycle waste, but its destination remains the wet waste pit.”

Even though no plastic recycling has been sent to Brisbane since March a council spokesperson told The Express in September that “In the last quarter of the financial year, we sent a total of more than 54t’s of plastics south.”

TRC Mayor Rod Marti was approached for comment and no reply was received by deadline.

TRC wraps up 1080 baiting program across region

LAST month Tablelands Regional Council wrapped up their baiting campaign targeting wild dogs using the controversial 1080 poison.

Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) is a highly poisonous substance that is used to control agricultural and environmental pests.

The baiting campaign was a joint initiative between the (TRC) and the Malanda Beef Plan Group and was aimed at targeting feral dogs in the northeast part of the council region.

According to the TRC’s website the term “wild dog refers collectively to purebred dingoes, dingo hybrids and domestic dogs that have escaped

or been deliberately released. In Queensland, wild dogs create a number of economic, environmental and social problems — particularly for agriculture.”

In October the TRC asked for expressions of interest in the program via social media with 45 landowners registering for the program.

Mark Vis, General Manager Infrastructure and Planning at the TRC said some of the people that have multiple properties so around 60 properties are taking part.

“Each property receives 20 baits, the properties are generally in the Millaa Millaa, Malanda, Tarzali and Evelyn areas,” he said.

The highly toxic, odourless pesticide which has no antidote and is used by the Australian government and private landholders to kill introduced animals they deemed to be pests, which include dingoes, foxes, cats, rabbits, pigs, and in some cases, native wildlife.

After the post went public many people vented their frustration with the council using 1080.

Jayne Svetanoski wrote “BAN 1080, please STOP laying these horrific poison 1080 baits,” “1080 has NO place in our society. No living creature should have to endure a horrific death via this.”

Dedan Hughan wrote “Ban 1080! It kills everything that comes into contact with it!! It targets every animal, even na-

And Tara Yo said “There is nowhere rural enough in the Tablelands Regional Council that would deem it safe from birds picking up these baits and dropping them into paddocks and semi residential areas. It is a slow painful traumatic death for any animal.”

Mr Vis said that the risk to native animals is minimised when the legal requirements of 1080 are met. These include tying down or burying the baits to minimise the risk of birds or native animals taking them, erecting warning signs and notifying neighbours within a certain distance that 1080-laced baits have been laid in the area. Poisoned carcasses and untouched baits have to be retrieved and disposed of immediately at the end of the program.

Mr Vis said that as new methods become available the council would be open to trying new options.

“1080 may not be an ideal way to control wild dogs, however it is a legal pest control method in Australia and landholders request it due to the cost efficiency and significant reduction in wild dog populations,” he said.

“Landholders who opt out of the program should actively engage alternative methods to control wild dogs on their properties.

“As new methods become available we will promote the change to more accurate, effective and humane options.”

Canegrowers CEO Dan Galligan said that competition in sugar marketing and the ability to forward price has opened up new opportunities for growers to enhance their profitability.

“This new course aims to develop the skills and understanding to navigate this environment to make informed sugar pricing decisions,” he said.

“As an industry entirely exposed to the fluctuations of world sugar prices, we need to be clever to compete.

“Canegrowers recognises that the ability of growers to maximise their returns is enhanced by understanding of commodity markets, their own costs of production and capacity to manage business risks.”

Canegrowers has teamed up with TAFE Queensland and the Rural Jobs Skills Alliance to create the course called Pricing Essentials for Cane Growers.

The TAFE course which is being offered for the first time in 2021, fits neatly into a suite of resources that Canegrowers has created which are available online to members.

“The more information and skills they have at hand, the better placed growers are to take opportunities to improve their profitability – something which is critical in times of low world sugar prices as we are seeing now,” Mr Galligan said.

The course will be delivered between February and May 2021 in most sugarcane growing regions.

Woolworths to support dairy farmers with new fund WOOLWORTHS are now taking applications for their Dairy Innovation Fund and offering a total of $5 million in grants to dairy farmers over the next three years for on-farm improvements.

Designed with peak industry groups, the fund will help dairy farmers innovate and increase on-farm efficiency, sustainability and resilience to manage seasonal variations through investments in technology and infrastructure.

All Australian dairy farmers who contribute milk to Woolworths’ dairy supply chain – directly or through processors – can apply to access up to $100,000 each in grants, with the first round of applications open from December 1.

The fund supports the Australian Dairy Plan’s emphasis on innovation as a key driver to reduce the cost of production and increase on-farm profitability.

With research from Dairy Australia showing around 80 per cent of dairy farmers intend

to make investments in their business in the next two years, grants from Woolworths’ Dairy Innovation Fund will help bring some of those plans to life.

Woolworths Director of Buying, Paul Harker said “Our Dairy Innovation Fund will help Australian farmers invest in projects that increase farming efficiency and modernise their operations with new technology.

“Dairy farmers have faced tough conditions in recent years through droughts and bushfire.

The Dairy Innovation Fund will help farmers invest for the future, while also increasing resilience to withstand these types of challenges,” he said.

“This fund will assist in turning long-planned farm improvements into a reality, so we’re inviting dairy farmers to tell us how they would use up to $100,000 to improve their operations.

“We look forward to supporting projects which will make a meaningful difference to Australian dairies and contribute to

the long-term prosperity of the sector.”

The fund has been designed in consultation with peak industry groups Australian Dairy Farmers, Dairy Australia, National Farmers’ Federation, Premium Milk Ltd and the NSW Farmers’ Association Dairy Committee. The consultation has ensured the fund will provide effective support for smart investments in key infrastructure, such as water and fodder, or agriculture technology and sustainability initiatives.

Chairman of Queenslandbased Premium Milk Ltd, Peter Garratt said “We're excited by the opportunity to make farmers’ ambitions a reality through the grants offered by the Woolworths Dairy Innovation Fund,” he said.

“We believe there are tremendous opportunities to see farms continuing to innovate, investing in technology and capital infrastructure that will drive efficiencies and profitability of our industry into the future.”

History has shown that once places like this are leased to commercial interests, they are never the same. It is a slippery slope and it is not hard to see the park, once forever changed could easily be sold by TRC at a later date.

I am dismayed that the TRC would even consider selling the park, let alone putting it up for lease to a commercial operator. I feel they have rushed this decision without proper (if any) community consultation. Council has advised it has cost ratepayers $200,000 a year to maintain the park. Where are the detailed figures? Where is the cost-benefit analysis?

All campers know what commercial operations are like. Concrete jungles of numbered, marked bays, high density camping, commercial interests before community exactly what people travel to Malanda Falls Carvan Park to escape from. A commercial operator will maximise profits. They will sell drinks, sell food, host movie nights all taking money away from local small businesses.

The TRC in my mind should spend real money advertising and promoting the park and its uniqueness.

That would increase visitor numbers and income.

The commercial opera-

tion lease of the park is not the answer. Community consultation has not occurred.

There are other options for the park that have not been considered. We deserve far better from those elected to represent us.

Can someone please explain I CAN’T get my head around why hundreds or even thousands of cars have to stop at the two rail crossings at Rankine Street and Keeble Streets in Mareeba. This cost to the public in brake wear, fuel usage and frustration is incredible.

I believe that most road users must be as frustrated and annoyed as I am?

There are only two rail motor trips per week (in the dry season only). This motor is slow moving and can easily traverse this crossing safely by slowly travelling and stopping if necessary.

In fact the rail motor stops to view various animals etc. that it encounters on the leisurely journey. It has no real time table to follow. Just up one day and a few days later back.

The crossing on Reynolds Street off Chewko road near Mareeba Transport over exactly the same rail line is “Give Way” only!

The highway rail crossings to Dimbulah and Cape York both have lights and a boom gate / lights combinations which is reasonable given the higher speed limits and road importance.

I think this is something that the Chamber should conduct a public debate on as it represents the business interests and community interests of Mareeba.

Can this be included for discussion at your next meeting?

Can the Chamber promote discussion with the Transport Department, Railways, Mareeba Shire Council and the public of Mareeba?.

Buy, buy Australia LAST week we heard the good news that Bega Cheese would be buying back Dairy Farmers milk in a deal that is worth over half a billion dollars.

Not only does Bega pick up Dairy Farmers but also Pura Milk, Daily Juice, Big M flavoured milk and Dare iced coffee.

Last year these brands were going to be sold to the Chinese owned Mengniu Dairy. The sale was approved and recommended

by Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board, then at the last moment, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg halted the sale citing a conflict with national interests.

The sale of Dairy Farmers back into Australian hands follows a slight trend. In October of this year Australian mining magnate Twiggy Forest bought iconic bootmaker RM Williams for a reported $190m.

Bega cheese also bought back Vegemite from overseas interests in 2017 for around $460m.

This means that some of Australia’s biggest brands are returning home, it also means we now have to support them.

The reason the above brands were sold in the first place was because they couldn’t compete with overseas manufacturing. If you want to support your local dairy farmer and keep the Dairy Farmers brand back in Australian hands, we all are going to have to forfeit the cheap supermarket brand milk and pay a little extra for Dairy Farmers Milk.

Same goes with Vegemite and RM Williams.

Australia Made chief executive Ben Lazzaro said the coronavirus pan-

demic had created demand for goods that would support Australian jobs — despite the extra cost of buying Australian-made products.

Research by Roy Morgan in July found 90 per cent of Australians surveyed wanted more products produced locally, up from 88 per cent in January.

The most common reason given was the pandemic had “highlighted Australia’s reliance on other countries”, the second was new employment opportunities needed to be created in Australia.

Some of our most beloved brands are actually owned by overseas multinationals, brands like Speedo, Arnott’s, Uncle Tobys, Bushells, Golden Circle, Bundaberg Sugar and Milo.

At the moment Australia and China are having a spat over a number of issues that has led to Australian wine, sugar, seafood and produce either sitting on a Chinese dock going off in the sun or being priced out of the market due to ridiculous tariffs.

We have put all our eggs in the Chinese basket which is a curse as well as an opportunity for all Australians If we want to keep Australian products in Australian hands then we need to buy Australian. Due to our wages and living conditions Australian milk, clothing, wine and produce is going to cost more.

So next time you’re at the supermarket do you support an overseas multinational? or are you willing to pay a little more and help Australia wean itself off our reliance on countries like China. The choice is ours.

SPORT FNQ Hotdogs finish winners THE FNQ Hotdogs made a clean sweep in three divisions at the recent 2020 FNQ Futsal Titles held in Cairns.

The U11, U15 and Open Men’s’ divisions clinched their finals to come out on top and become champions.

For the Open Men’s division this win marks four years in a row, the U11’s had their second consecutive win, while the U15’s took home their first ever title.

FNQ Hotdogs coach Ronnie Leporati was proud of his players and how they played during the titles.

“It feels good as a coach to see all the hard work and training pay off,” he said.

“Overall it wasn’t as big as past tournaments but the standard of games was high.

“The best game of the whole weekend was the U15 final.”

The U15 final was a nail biter with the game moving into extra time and a constant fight for control of the ball which ended with the Hotdogs winning 6-5.

The Open Men’s side will be traveling to the Gold Coast in January 2021 to compete in the Gold Coast International Futsal Championships.

“We won the championship two years ago and we lost in the semi-final last year,” Mr Leporati said.

“These boys have been together since they were 14 years of age so they know each other.

“They’ve got a pretty good chance of hopefully making it to the finals.”

Young Dayne clinches kart championship AFTER just a year behind the wheel, Atherton’s Dayne Ross aged 11 has taken home his first championship after the Cairns Kart Racing Club Cadet 12 Championship.

Held over the last six months the championship saw Dayne on the track against some of Queensland’s top Cadet 12 competitors and even against the current Queensland Champion.

Cadet 12 refers to the age group and division that Dayne competes in against others his age, all drivers use a smaller less powerful go kart than older divisions.

Dayne’s dad, Chris Ross was excited to see his son perform so well despite only starting to race recently.

“Dayne has always had an

interest in racing from a very young age, probably due to the fact that both his Mother and I have competed in dirt track speedway for many years,” he said.

“It is a family affair attending Dayne’s race meetings his pit crew usually consists of Mum, Dad and sister Emma and we all get a thrill watching him race.”

Dayne is now looking forward to his last year competing in Cadet 12’s before he moves up a division and hopes to travel and compete on more tracks right across Queensland.

MAREEBA lottery horse Paniagua competed at the Country Cups Challenge in Brisbane on Saturday and kept his fine form taking home yet another win.

Paniagua qualified for the Country Cups Challenge several weeks ago after racing in

Cairns and was put up against the best country gallopers in Queensland.

This didn’t slow him down as Paniagua dominated the race and won by several lengths.

Paniagua’s trainer Alex Malliff was extremely happy

with his performance during the race.

“He’s an impressive horse a big beautiful animal and he takes everything in his stride,” he said.

“He cost us $600 dollars and he’s now earned $250,000.

“Paniagua has been invited

to start in The Gateway race at Eagle Farm on Saturday which is a $250,000 dollar race.”

After being entered into The Gateway race, Paniagua also receives an invitation to enter into the Stradbroke Handicap in the Winter Carnival next year.

Scorching weekend of cricket MAREEBA thirds have added another win to their list while seconds unfortunately went down in their game over the weekend.

Thirds played Norths at Borzi Park on Saturday and after winning the toss decided to put themselves in to bat.

It was a slow start with the openers not making a dent and falling cheaply before Ray Watkins and Brett Stallan came to

Atherton bounces back ATHERTON’S first grade side bounced back from a two match losing streak to deliver a comprehensive win over Cassowary Coast at Miller Oval in Tully on Saturday in the opening round of Cricket Far North’s new 50 over format.

Cassowary Coast chose to bat first and Atherton's bowlers got the team off to a good start with Liam Bombardieri snaring his first 1st-Grade wicket in his first over.

The lanky teenager had the ball swinging and returned 2-17 off six overs in his 1st Grade debut. Seppe Barletta contributed with a tidy opening spell to take 1-15 off six and Paul Nasser and Tom Boorman took a wicket apiece. Dan Parnell and Pete Sceresini showed why they are considered two of the best fielders in the comp with a spectacular catch each, but it was Dan’s

remarkable bowling that stole the show. Dan ripped in with his crafty leg spin decimating the opposition line-up, taking 5-7 off five overs with three maidens and a hat-trick opportunity, bundling the opposition out for 65 runs.

Paul Nasser led the chase for Atherton hitting the winning runs with a four in the 13th over to claim a 7 wicket win and a valuable 2 bonus points.

The next match is a crucial top-of-the-table clash between Atherton v Rovers this Saturday, December 12, at Atherton’s Loder Park from 10am.
