KEEPING JOY ALIVE

Local bikers continued the 24 year tradition of the Tablelands Toy Run on Saturday, bringing Christmas joy to families by ensuring those less fortunate can still enjoy the spirit of Christmas in 2020. Helping to keep the joy alive was Dimbulah’s Steve Szekely (80), who joined hundreds of bikers as they rode and collected toys and other donations across the Tablelands for the Salvation Army. ■ TOY RUN IN PHOTOS P21

Save Mareeba Hospital group calls for Ministerial action BY PHIL BRANDEL

SAVE Mareeba Hospital Action Group is calling on the new State Health Minister Yvette D'Ath to take action to ensure that there are dialysis services at the Mareeba Hospital. Information obtained by The Express discovered that there are dialysis machines in Mossman, Cooktown, Innisfail, Atherton, Yarrabah, Bamaga, Weipa, Edmonton, Smithfield, Thursday Island and Cairns as well as two machines at Lotus Glen, but still none in Mareeba – the largest urban centre outside Cairns. Spokesperson for the action group, Ross Cardillo claims that to date there has been no real improvements in health services at Mareeba Hospital despite continued growth in the shire. “The fact remains that by their own admission, the Palaszczuk State Labor government had confirmed in recent times that because of continued growth, Mareeba is now firmly established as the largest community in the Far North outside of Cairns,” Mr Cardillo said. “In spite of this confirmed growth, the Mareeba Hospital which was built in 1980 once catered for well over 90 beds is now rated at only 52 beds.” Mr Cardillo claimed that the Palaszczuk Government and successive Health Ministers have abandoned health services,

especially those in the southern sections of Cook electorate. “There has been a total Health Department and State Government ignorance of the identified need for dialysis services to be established in Mareeba, and precisely nothing has happened to meet that identified need,” he said. “This means that at least 36 trips have to be made to other centres outside Mareeba each and every week so that dialysis patients can get the basic service they so desperately require.” According to figures supplied by the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS), there are currently 12 patients requiring in hospital Dialysis with another 13 people receiving Dialysis at home. Dr Murty Mantha Director of Renal Medicine at CHHHS said that at the moment there were not enough patients in the Mareeba area to warrant a dialysis service at the Mareeba Hospital. “Currently, the number of patients on hospital-based dialysis in the Mareeba area does not support the volume required for a dedicated dialysis service at Mareeba Hospital to be established,” he said “We need to concentrate our services on the Tablelands in one location, in order to ensure a safe and sustainable service.” A CHHHS spokesperson also confirmed that there were two

dialysis machines doing nothing at Lotus Glen correction centre. “The two machines in Lotus Glen are currently not in operation as there are no dialysis patients. “The Lotus Glen Dialysis service is provided by Lotus

Glen clinical staff under the governance of Queensland Health, the CHHHS Nephrologist provides medical support for these patients,” the spokesperson said. Mr Cardillo is looking forward to meeting with the new

minister and hopes for a positive outcome. “We look forward to meeting with the State's new Health Minister with a view to obtaining a more positive response than in the past in order to service the health requirements of the growing Mareeba

Shire and the Cook electorate as a whole,” Mr Cardillo said. The Save the Mareeba Hospital Action group had reached out to the Minister but at the time of deadline no response had been received.

Distillery of the Year goes to Mt Uncle

Head to trc.qld.gov.au for more information and to register your home or street. Register by 8 December

THE Mt Uncle Distillery at Walkamin has topped off an impressive year after winning the award for ‘Australian Whiskey Distillery of year’ at the recent Melbourne International Spirits Competition (MISC). The latest award comes after the distillery cleaned up at a number of other international award ceremonies in 2020. Mt Uncle Distillery was started by Mark Watkins in 2001, due to him having an interest in distilling from a young age. “I started distilling in my cubby house when I was sixteen,” Mark said. After completing two chemistry degrees and working on a winery in New South Wales, Mark returned to his family’s banana plantation west of Cairns and using leftover bananas he distilled his first liquor. Then in 2001, he began selling spirits to the public. In 2017 Mt Uncle Distillery won Australia Distillery of the Year at the fourth annual Melbourne International Spirits Competition (MISC). In 2019 Mt Uncle Distillery’s Iridium Gold was labelled the Best

Rum in the World after beating out a host of international drops at the World Rum Awards in London. Mt Uncle then took out top honours for their single malt Watkins Whiskey in the ‘12 Years and under’ category at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards in London. Now the winning streak has continued with Mt Uncle being awarded the ‘Australian Whiskey Distillery of the Year’ and a Gold medal for their Single Malt Whiskey at the MISC. Mark said it was another feather in his cap “It’s the second time we have won the award, I think the reason we’ve won it again its due to consistency and just good quality whiskey,” he said. “And it gets up the nose of the Tasmanian whiskey producers. “The reason why the Whiskey won gold again is because we use the best malted barley and we also use a hybrid cask made from French oak and American oak. ‘The French oak gives it a nice spice and the American oak gives it a nice honey taste.”

Mark also said he is interested in quality rather than quantity. “Last we only made 30 barrels of the whiskey and this year we’re aiming for only 45 barrels.” The latest awards follow on from the 5 silvers and 2 bronze medals that Mt Uncle won at last month’s Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair as well as another seven awards at the 2020 Australian Distilling Awards including a Gold medal for the their Bushfire Smoked Gin. Mark said that his unique gin is based on an original London dry gin recipe but the original ingredients had been substituted with Australian native botanicals. “We have smoked our botanicals with bushfire timber, to uncover a rich, smokey, woody flavour,” he said. Despite the awards Mark is not about to rest on his laurels, with Mt Uncle getting ready to launch a Christmas flavoured gin and also Australia’s first agave spirit which is due out next year.

TRC to get out of caravan business TWO Tablelands caravan parks are set to be leased out to commercial operators after the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) voted to end their involvement in the parks. The Malanda Falls Caravan Park and the Lake Side Motor Inn and Caravan Park at Lake Tinaroo are run and owned by council, with caretakers taking care of the parks on Council’s behalf. At last Thursday’s council meeting, councillors voted to put both parks out to lease for a commercial operator to run the parks, while council would still own the land. According to council documents, over the past four years the Malanda Falls Caravan Park incurred an operating cost to the Council of $125,000 per year on average. While the Lakeside Motor Inn and Caravan Park has incurred an average operating cost to the Council of $30,844 per year. TRC councillors were given five options to vote on for the future of both tourist parks One was to contract management of the park to a thirdparty operator (Employee Caretakers), two was to contract management of the park to a third-party operator and manager, three being lease the park to a commercial operator, four was to sell the park and the fifth option was to decommission the park and no longer provide this service. During the meeting Councillor David Clifton led the charge to lease out the Malanda caravan park saying that in the 2019/2020 financial year, the caravan park cost each individual ratepayer $9.34.

“Due to competition regulations we can’t be successful in running ventures like this,” he said. “We need to put it out there to the commercial world, if they can’t make money from it, then nobody can. “We need to stop the bleed of money, let’s get a commercial operator to run it and we will continue to own it as a council asset.” Mayor Rod Marti said he was supportive of council putting the van parks up for lease to a commercial operator because council was notoriously bad at managing commercial enterprises. “This council has been bleeding for years, because we don’t have the skills to run caravan parks,” he said. “We are not equipped to do anything outside of water, waste and roads. “The statement we are making to the community is that council doesn’t want to be in the business of running caravan parks. “Ratepayers have been pumping money into these parks for a very long time, so let’s put a professional in there and let them have a go.” The vote to lease the Malanda Caravan park to a commercial operator was passed five to two, with Councillors Bilney and Hayden voting against the motion. The decision to lease out the Lakeside Caravan Park at Lake Tinaroo to a commercial operator was passed unanimously. After the passing of the two motions Cr Clifton said council would now put the parks out to tender.

Sealing to start on BDR

North Queensland Senator Susan McDonald announcing funding for the BDR.

WORK is under way to seal up to 24 kilometres of the Burke Developmental Road, north of Normanton, as part of the COVID-19 economic stimulus program. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack said the $14 million works are part of the Australian Government’s Shovel Ready Infrastructure Investment program. “We continue to roll out these types of projects across the nation under our $110 billion infrastructure pipeline, which

is laying the foundation for economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Deputy Prime Minister said. North Queensland Senator, Susan McDonald, said the Australian Government’s stimulus funding is providing important infrastructure for remote communities as well as helping major industries. “The Burke Developmental Road is a vital route connecting regional businesses to local and international markets and provides tourism access to northern and north western Queensland,” Senator McDonald said. “Sealing this link to eight metres wide is good for our economy, good for road safety and good for improved flood immunity.” Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said it was great to see the local council deliver the works, which would bolster the region’s 166 businesses and 1,000 jobs. “Better roads get families home safer, our products to markets across Australia and the globe and stimulate jobs,” Ms Lui said. “Across the Cape and Gulf, we’re sealing road with projects like this and the jointly-funded $237 million Cape York Region Package Stage Two, which is also supporting 150 jobs.” Works will start in November and are expected to be completed by June 2022, construction and weather conditions permitting.

AUSSIE OWNED: Millaa Millaa farmer James Geraghty said the Bega Cheese purchase is great news for dairy farmers on the Tablelands.

BEGA Cheese has bought Lion Dairy and Drinks in a $534 million deal that will see it become the new owner of brands such as Farmers Union, Yoplait and Dairy Farmers. Bega Cheese said the deal would be done by January and the combined business is expected to generate revenue in excess of $3 billion. The deal comes after the owner of Lion Dairy and Drinks, Japan’s Kirin Holdings tried to offload their Australian Dairy and Drinks operation in a $600 million deal with China's Mengniu Dairy last year. The deal was blocked by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg earlier this year, claiming it was not in the nation’s best interest.

Other brands included in the sale include Pura and Masters Milk, Daily Juice, Big M flavoured milk and Dare iced coffee. Bega Cheese's executive chairman Barry Irvin said the deal will give Bega enormous access to cold refrigerators in service stations and convenience stores around the country. “We are delighted to announce this acquisition which we believe will create significant value for shareholders,” said Mr Irvin. Dairy Farmers Director and Millaa Millaa farmer James Geraghty said the purchase was great news for dairy farmers on the Tablelands. “We now have some direction in which we are going to

B

travel, we go from a Japanese brewing company to an Australian Milk processor,” Mr Geraghty said. “Until they come up and we can have a discussion with them, we’re not sure what’s happening but we are hoping they intended to increase production up here. “Even though Bega are a milk processor, they haven’t sold liquid milk but now Bega owns processing plants in every state in Australia. “We are also hoping that they are willing to pay the farmer higher milk prices.” Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter congratulated Bega for its purchase of Lion’s dairy and drinks business,

claiming the sale was a ‘huge win for Australia’. “Today is a great day for Australia,” he said. “It is the duty of every Australian to buy Bega cheese from now on. “This is extremely good news and we would see this as an opportunity to get a much better deal out of the giant supermarket chains who literally have sold cheap milk over the dead bodies of Australian dairy farmers, their job farmers, contractors and associated businesses. “So with this sale, they will be getting a bit of their own medicine back.”

Bike building success A PROGRAM that started four months ago to help homeless men learn new skills and give them social interaction by refurbishing second hand bikes has come to an end. Mareeba Community Housing Company (MCHC) started the program in August with the aim of bringing men together on a regular basis to rebuild and refurbish old push bikes. By rebuilding the bikes the men learnt and shared new skills like team building, communication, punctuality and pride in a job well done. Some of the men couch surf at friends or relatives’ while other men are staying in the properties managed by MCHC. The Mareeba Shire Council dump in Mareeba donated the bikes carcases and six men were involved over the past four

months, fixing up four of the bikes with another two bikes being donated at a later stage. The refurbished bikes will now be given to local children for Christmas, while the two newer bikes will be raffled off closer to Christmas. Street to Home Building Futures officer Brett Pearce said the program gives the men an opportunity to meet and relate to other men who are in similar situations, helping them to build confidence and self-esteem. “It also helps them get a sense of satisfaction by making something for someone else,” he said. “The bikes are almost secondary – it’s more about getting them together and providing them with an opportunity to open up with others who may have shared a similar experi-

ence. “They also get some soft employment skills, like using tools, communication, cleaning, and painting. “We also want to say a big thankyou to Victoria and Simon from the Hungry Pug and also to Sports Power in Mareeba.” One of the men who participated in the group was Darren Devine who said he picked up new skills since starting with the group. “Over the past 20 weeks I’ve learnt how to use my initiative as well as learning how to put bikes together, I’ve also learnt how to paint, strip and grind,” he said “I’m not working so it’s great to get out of the house and end the boredom.”

$27K success TABLELANDS residents were given the opportunity to own a piece of Atherton history on Saturday, November 28 when parts of the old nurses quarters, which was recently demolished at the Atherton Hospital. were put up for auction raising $27,000. Before the demolition, a crew went through the building removing french doors, arched and casement windows, balustrades and other items which were then donated to the Atherton Friends of the Hospital Foundation for a community auction.

Saturday’s Auction raised $27,000 which will now be used to buy much needed equipment for the Atherton Hospital. Atherton Friends of the Hospital Foundation President Di Williams, said close to 300 people turned up and they sold everything on the day “We had a couple of beautiful curved windows; they were very well made and were very heavy and they sold for over $1000 each and the old piano went for $800 dollars, she said. “We also had 54 sets of French doors which all sold. “We even sold an old bed

pan and the old hydraulic operating table. Di said that the CEO of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation Tony Williamson (pictured) conducted the auction while Atherton Men’s Shed made sure that everybody was fed. “It was a great day and all the volunteers did a great job, she said. “We want to thank al the volunteers, everybody that turned up on the day and everybody that has supported FOF.

New multi-million dollar servo opens MOTORISTS will now be able to experience the new and improved Mobil service station after it was officially opened on Thursday, November 26. The old Mobil service station was demolished along with an adjacent house to make room for the new station that features ultra-high flow diesel and a 24hr cafĂŠ along with other improvements. The four million dollar project took just over 22 weeks to complete after being approved several years ago with the construction starting in May and finishing at the end of November. The opening was attended by Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Mayor Angela Toppin and Developer Dean Bradal who both commented on the sites upgraded facilities.

“We initially viewed this as a high quality development and it is that, so I congratulate all parties involved, Cr Toppin said. “They are employing local and they are developing partnerships with local businesses and that synergy is important in terms of the shire going forward. “We’re very pleased with the development and the benefits it brings to the shire both trade wise and employment wise. “We bought the site back in 2010 from the previous owners who held the site for about 35 years, Mr Bradal said. “From there we expanded and we had this plan for a new development for about three years. “We finished the project in 22 weeks and we handed it over.

Rob Mahoney Retail General Manager for Trinity Petroleum and Freedom Fuels is excited to have been able to keep staff on and employ new local staff to man the upgraded service station. “In terms of local employment we have been able to reemploy a lot of the staff that worked here formerly, he said. “We have used contractors that are local and we use suppliers that are local. “One example is that we have chosen to use a local bakery to supply the bread for the station, because they are good, because we can and it is good for the community. Better quality fuel and upgraded pump stations are also now available at the Mobil station as a part of their new upgrades.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin and Developer Dean Bradal officially opened the new Mobil service station last Thursday, November 26

Win for community

GRINNING IS WINNING: Tablelands Regional Councillors pay up on their dare.

The TRC’s Mayor’s Community Christmas Appeal got a helping hand from a dare by fellow Councillors last week THE Express Newspaper has been caught up in a Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) dare, without even realising it. This year the TRC decided to rename The TRC Community Christmas Appeal to the ‘Mayors Community Christmas Appeal.’ TRC Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew said that at the time he sent out an email to his fellow councillors writing that, “If we could get a photo of Mayor Rod Marti smiling in a Santa hat for the new renamed appeal I would contribute $20 of my own money to the appeal,” he said. “I put that in an email to all

the other councillors and it just rolled on from there with all the councillors agreeing.” In the November 18 edition of The Express we ran the story on the launch of the Mayors 2020 Christmas appeals. At the time TRC Mayor Rod Marti said “Not everyone has money to spare at Christmas time and some just have trouble making ends meet,” he said. “With a small donation to the Mayor’s Community Christmas Appeal you can make a difference to people and families in need, donations will be used to provide food vouchers to people in need in our community.”

For the story Mayor Rod Marti agreed to wear a Santa hat and a big smile. It’s was something that came as a surprise to all the TRC councillors. “The Mayor’s first response to my email was that he wouldn’t do it and then when we saw him in The Express it was a great surprise,” Cr Cardew said “He did it without our knowledge so on Thursday’s council meeting we were all happy to pay up.” As result of the photo $165 dollars in total was donated by TRC councillors at last Thursday’s council meeting.

TIS THE SEASON OF GIVING: Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin receiving the $1,500 donation to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal by Mareeba Rotary President Maree Lopez.

Mareeba Rotary boost Christmas Appeal MAREEBA Rotary have continued their tradition and kick started the Mareeba Shire Councils (MSC) Mayor’s Christmas Appeal donating $1,500 last Thursday, November 26. The donation is a long-time tradition done by Rotary to get the ball rolling for the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. Mareeba Rotary President Maree Lopez was excited to get the first donation in for the

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. “It is tradition for Mareeba Rotary to kick start the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal,” she said. “We realise that the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is an important part of giving back to the community. “This year there are a lot of more people struggling and by donating its good to have that connection with our community.” MSC Mayor Angela Toppin

was grateful for the donation and said that the money will be put to good use this festive season. “I sincerely thank Mareeba Rotary for this generous donation to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal,” she said. “Money raised through the appeal will be donated to various community groups across the Shire to assist local families this Christmas season.”

Award winning bird

Jun’s award winning photo of a preening cassowary. Copyright to Jun Matsui.

A SERENDIPITOUS drive through the Tablelands has led to a Far North Queensland Photographer and Bird Guide taking out one of the top awards

at the 2020 Bird Life Australia Photo Awards. In June of this year Jun Matsui was driving a friend home on the Palmerston highway just

out of Millaa Millaa when he spotted a female cassowary on the side of the road. Rather than just driving by he pulled over to get other cars to slow down and hopefully coax the cassowary back into the forest away from the passing cars. Being an avid bird watcher Jun decided to take some photos just as the cassowary started to preen itself stretching her neck over. Jun said he was surprised at how beautiful the photo turned out. “I didn’t want to chase her away, I just wanted to make sure she didn’t get hit by a car,” he said. “While I was waiting she did some preening and eventually disappeared into the forest. Even not showing her face, she's beautiful,” he said. Jun won $1000 cash for winning the award for best Bird Portrait – an award he has now won twice in a row. “I also won the award last year for my portrait of a cassowary at Kuranda,” he said. Jun said he works as a bird tour guide taking people across Far North Queensland introducing them to some of the unique bird life that live in the tropics. “I’ve been working as a bird watching tour guide, so I knew that she was very relaxed and not stressed,” Jun said. “I was just hoping that she would walk back in the forest without being harmed, instead I managed to take this amazing photo.” To see more Jun’s photos go to www.birder.travel

Dignitaries on hand for official opening WHILE the new Atherton RSL opened its doors to the public in September, due to COVID the RSL had to postpone its official opening. On Saturday, November 28 after several years of delays the club was able to officially open. In attendance were local veterans, volunteers, Hill MP Shane Knuth and North Queensland LNP Senator Susan McDonald who said the building was a credit to Atherton and a fitting addition to the district’s other monuments to local servicemen and women. “The RSL veterans and members have continued Australia’s proud military tradition of determination and drive

to succeed by raising an extraordinary amount of money through raffles, sausage sizzles and memorabilia sales,” said Senator McDonald. “In regional towns the local RSL is far more than just a hub for veterans, it’s a central part of the community’s fibre. “I congratulate the current and past committees on their vision, enthusiasm and patience finally coming to fruition, and I’m pleased that the Australian Government has been able to contribute.” Atherton RSL sub-branch welfare officer John Hartley said in his opening speech that the RSL held a special place is in his heart.

“I served in Vietnam and I have seen the consequences of war,” he said. “The RSL is a special place that supports all of our forces, including serving and ex-serving. “We also need support from our younger veterans to come forward and for us to show our community that the RSL is their friend and family. “Most of all thanks to the community of the Tablelands for supporting us in our endeavours.” The Atherton RSL is located at 2 Railway Lane and is open seven days a week.

Heart for Missy

An aerial photo of the giant red heart for Missy. The photo was taken by Richard Hopkinson from Aeroscan.

IN August of this year Malanda’s Missy Clarkson lost her battle with cancer. The 13-year-old had been fighting leukaemia for many years, enduring bone-marrow transplants and was placed in remission back 2018 before the illness took hold again. As a way of remembering Missy on Friday, November 27 the Malanda State School decided to show their support by all

wearing red and lining up in the shape of a giant red heart. Malanda State School Principal Mark Allen said the aim of the day was to raise awareness about Missy’s long four year battle with cancer. “There were about 500 students and teachers standing outside in red, along with Missy’s parents Anj and Rob,” he said. “There were lots of tears and hugs for Anj and Rob and for the

students who miss Missy. “It was a touching experience, which will be a lasting memory for the children. It was a powerful symbol of the Malanda Family.” The giant heart was part of a weekend long event to say goodbye to Missy which also included a celebration of her life at the Malanda Showground's which took place on Saturday, November 28.

Gas bottle explosion A 72-year-old Mareeba man is lucky to be alive after a gas bottle explosion in a shed at a Mareeba property resulted in the amputation of one of his arms. Emergency services were called to the property at Joan Crescent in Mareeba around midday on Saturday, November 21 Emergency services were called to the scene where he was treated by paramedics and transported to Mareeba Hospital in a serious condition. A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said he had suffered “significant arm

and facial injuries.” Police said the explosion was believed to have occurred while gas was being transferred from a larger container into the smaller bottle. After being rushed to Mareeba Hospital where doctors managed to stabilise him, he was then flown to Cairns Hospital where he underwent non-life threating surgery and remains in the intensive care unit. A police spokesman said the cause of the explosion remained under investigation but it was believed to be an accident.

Local Metallurgist wins international award

Newest round to connect isolated Australians ROUND 5A of the Mobile Black Spot Program is now open for applications with $380 million dollars going towards expanding mobile coverage in regional and remote Australia. Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch welcomes the Australian Government’s continuing commitment to connecting regional and remote Australians. “The vastness of Leichardt brings challenges in telecommunications and this program assists in improving mobile coverage along major transport corridors and in disaster prone regions,” Mr Entsch said. Minister for Regional Health, Regional Communications and Local Government, the Hon Mark Coulton MP said the continuing investment in mobile base stations is beneficial for many Australians.

“The first five rounds of the program have funded over 1,200 new base stations in regional Australia with more than 880 of these already switched on,” he said. Mr Entsch encourages local communities and councils in Leichhardt electorate to identify their priorities for improved coverage, and to work with the mobile network operators and infrastructure providers in support of applications for funding for those areas. Applications for Round 5A opened on 18 November 2020 and will close on 10 February 2020. lurgy (AIMM) which is one of the largest professional mining organisations in the world. The AIMM have several annual awards and John was nominated for the “The Institute and Resources Sector Award for contributions to public education” and won via an international link up with people around the world. The awards were to be presented at a dinner in Queenstown, New Zealand but due to COVID the award ceremony had to be moved online. John said the judges were impressed in the work that he had done in putting together displays on the geological information on the Chilagoe district. “I contributed the information and the data for the displays at the Chillagoe Hub and also a series of signs that have been placed by National Parks and Wildlife around the old smelter site,” he said. A spokesperson from the AIMM said “John Nethery has made a consistent and significant contribution to the ongoing

success of the resources sector by building better understanding and respect between professionals and local communities in Far North Queensland,” “As a resident of Chillagoe for over 30 years, John has provided geological expertise, technical and logistical support to many explorers of the district over that time. “John is a regular contributor to the AIMM FNQ Branch Annual Roundup and Technical Sessions and a long-standing member of the local branch committee. “John is a regular media contributor on the importance of the industry, and is often a guest speaker at schools in the region where he helps build understanding of the sector. John has also provided much information to the Queensland Heritage Trails Network, bringing to light the important mining and mineral history of the region.” John said he was honoured to receive the award and that education had always been a prominent driver in his life.

“I started school 69 years ago in a back-country, oneteacher school with 20 pupils,” he said. “Later in primary school I roamed around the old Adelong gold mines with my rabbit traps and was shown the difference between pyrite and gold by an old prospector. “Later came a science degree and a Diploma in Education and I went straight into mineral exploration, but have always kept a foot in the door of public education: Lectures, displays, books and presentations to schools, universities, Rotary clubs, tourist guides and train operators, park rangers, and shire councils. “I am frustrated that most people these days do not recognise that it was the discovery, mining and smelting of metals and fossil fuels that led to agriculture and industrial civilisation, hence my fetish for public education on geology and the mining industry.”

Julatten theatre heads online for variety show THE Julatten Theatre Group (JTG) will be taking their next youth variety show online after receiving a $1,800 grant courtesy of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). The RADF supports quality arts and cultural experiences across Queensland and this year the Julatten Theatre Group is using their funding to take their annual youth variety show online. The group is using their funding to engage with professional sound/lighting and digital production technicians to bring their show online. Secretary for the JTG Glenys Tonon said that the reason for

moving the show online was to still give the children an opportunity to perform. “We met with our stakeholders and asked if moving the show online was a possibility,” she said. “From there it evolved and we realised to polish the performance we needed to seek more expert help than we had in our amateur group. “It was Willem who met with the Mareeba Shire Council to see in the light of COVID would they give us a hand to polish the performance.” Willem Brugman who is facilitating the virtual variety show said, “To get the support

and funding from the Mareeba Shire Council was most appreciated.” “For the past five to six years the schools have always annually made theatrical performances that they would present at JTG’s Theatre at the Geraghty Park Hall in Julatten. “Now they have to film their performances within their premises so they provide the recorded footage which needs to be edited and made available online on a streaming platform.” The JTG is hoping to have the variety show all recorded and ready for viewing online and on other platforms before Christmas.

Mobile Breastscreening arrives in Atherton A NEW mobile Breastscreen truck has arrived in Atherton for the very first time. Breastscreen Queensland is providing the free breast screens in Atherton for several months from 23 November in their new mobile facility. The mobile service will be located behind the Merrilands Hall at the Atherton Showgrounds, with access via Robert Street. Ms Sandra Peut, Health Promotion Officer at the service, said this was the first time the new mobile truck the ‘Desert Rose’ was visiting Atherton. “The $1 million truck pro-

vides access to the latest breast cancer screening digital technology, meaning that Tablelands women benefit from this state-of-the-art free service when it visits the region every two years,” she said. “Regular two-yearly screening at BreastScreen Queensland offers peace of mind, and our dedicated female staff will set your mind at ease and answer any questions you may have.” One in seven women in Australia will develop breast cancer at some stage in their life. A breast screen is the best way to find breast cancer in its earliest stages for better health

outcomes. Women aged between 50 and 74 are strongly recommended to have a breast screen every two years, as 75 per cent of breast cancer diagnoses are in this age group. Women in

their 40s and those aged over 75 are also eligible for the free service every two years. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50 or online at www.breastscreen.qld.gov. au.

The Council’s cattle trap yards in Kuranda.

DETECTIVES from the Mareeba Major Organised Crime Squad (MOCS) Rural have charged a Kuranda man after an investigation into the unlawful use of cattle. It’s alleged that the cattle had been under the management of the man prior to them straying and being captured in a Council cattle trap. Council officers had set the trap on private property in October in response to straying cattle. Once an animal is trapped in a clearly marked yard, it comes under the lawful control of the Council as an impounded animal and it is alleged that despite sighting the signage on the yards the man has failed to contact council or any other relevant authority, to gain permission to release the animals. A Police spokesperson said that interfering with animals secured by the Council is an offence, even if those animals belong to them. “Should any person who identifies animals

caught as their own, they should contact the local government authority and discuss options for the animals return,” they said. “Straying livestock has the risk of causing serious injury to persons and property from vehicle strikes, damage to infrastructure and crops. So control of these animals is undertaken by councils in an attempt to reduce this risk and encourage responsible animal ownership. “All animal owners are reminded that it is their obligation to ensure animals are kept confined and not allowed to stray onto other properties. “Local government can and do have the power to capture and impound straying animals.” Anyone found guilty of this offence is liable to 5 years imprisonment and the offence occurs when a person moves or controls cattle without permission of the lawful owner. The 35-year-old man is expected to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on January 18 2021.

MARITIME heritage in Cooktown will be given a boost after the James Cook Museum in Cooktown received $12,924 under the Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme. The scheme provides grants up to $15,000 to not-for-profit organisations to help display and conserve objects of national and historical maritime significance. Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the funding was a boost for locals working tirelessly to preserve Australia’s maritime heritage. “I am pleased to announce that this funding will support James Cook Museum to conserve and display significant local objects for today’s audiences and future generations,” Mr Entsch said. “This funding will be used to give the Endeavour Gallery, which houses an original anchor and canon from HMB Endeavour that were salvaged in the

1970s, a refresh.” Federal Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts Minister Paul Fletcher MP said our maritime history is an important part of Australia’s national story and must be shared. “Preserving our maritime heritage provides a significant opportunity for Australians to reflect on our history and how we interact with the sea and inland waterways, as well as the environment,” Mr Fletcher said. “This year, the Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme is supporting a total of 15 projects with grants, four projects will receive a grant and in kind support, with a further six projects receiving in kind support from the Museum to preserve and showcase our fascinating maritime heritage to audiences across Australia. “We are also pleased to support two paid internships, which will offer exciting professional development and networking opportunities.”

Innovators win QLD award

ACHIEVEMENT: Rob and Krista Watkins from Natural Evolution in Walkamin have had to make more space on their mantle after winning the Prime Super Agricultural Innovation Award at the recent Queensland Community Achievement Awards.

ROB and Krista Watkins have added yet another award to their growing collection after receiving the Prime Super Agricultural Innovation award at the recent Queensland Community Achievement Awards. The winners of the Awards were announced via a virtual presentation ceremony held on Friday, November 27. Out of the seven categories

available Walkamin based business Natural Evolution won the Prime Super Agricultural Innovation Award which focuses on a business’s innovation to enhance production and maximise returns especially to the primary producers. Rob and Krista have been sourcing excess produce from farms locally and further using produce that is branded unsuit-

able for supermarkets and making it into new products. Krista was humbled to receive the award and for both her company and staff to be recognised for their hard work. “It’s such great recognition for us and our whole team right through to the farmers that we purchase produce from,” she said. “The team here at Natural

Evolution in Walkamin and our extended team who work on sales right around the world. “Rob and I are over the moon it’s a great thing for everyone who is involved in the whole Natural Evolution process and products.” The winners of each category received $2,000 in award prizes from Qoin and Awards Australia along with a trophy.

Forecast – floods and fires for summer NORTHERN Australia can expect a wetter than normal summer, but bush and grass fires cannot be ruled out completely, according to the Bureau of Meteorology's Summer Climate Outlook. The outlook for summer has been issued as Australia continues to experience an active La Niña event which is expected to remain until at least the start of autumn. The Bureau's Head of Operational Climate Services Dr Andrew Watkins said this means large parts of eastern Australia have an increased risk of flooding. “While the last three weeks have been dry in many parts of the country – due in part to unfavourable tropical weather patterns – it does not signal a weakening of La Niña. “Our climate outlook is the opposite of what we experienced last year in Australia. This summer, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland are expected to see above average rainfall, meaning we face an increased risk of widespread floods. Dr Watkins said that while the risk of bushfires isn't as high as last summer, fires will occur. “There's a great chance of grass fires in some areas as recent rain and warm weather have led to vigorous vegetation growth. Even

short periods of hot and dry weather increase the risk of fire in summer.” Dr Watkins said the outlook was also a reminder for communities to be prepared for heatwaves over the coming months. “Every summer we see heatwaves across Australia. This summer heatwaves may not reach the extreme temperatures of recent years, but may be longer duration and more humid, which can still have a significant impact on human health,” he said. “Daytime temperatures in summer are likely to be near average, but there will be periods of high heat combined with milder periods. “It's important to keep up to date with the Bureau's heatwave service.” Dr Watkins said Northern Australia remains on track for an average to slightly above average cyclone season. “On average, Australia sees 9 to 11 tropical cyclones each year, with 4 crossing the coast. The first cyclone to develop in the Australian region occurs earlier during La Niña years. “People in the north of the country should prepare for tropical cyclones now. And don't forget tropical lows, which can bring heavy rainfall, flooding and cause significant property damage.”

ENTERTAINMENT Four great movies on the big screen

THERE'S more fun, comedy and drama at the Majestic Theatre this weekend. The brand new much anticipated family comedy drama The War With Grandpa with Robert De Niro, Uma Thurman and Rob Riggie hits the Malanda big screen. It's the story about Peter being upset that he has to share the room he loves with his grandfather and he decides to declare war in an attempt to get it back. There is a special treat on screen this Sunday. You can enjoy an exclusive pre-release screening of Anne Hathaway's big new family adventure comedy The Witches also starring Octavia Spencer and Stanley Tucci. Based on Roald Dahl's beloved story, don't miss the opportunity to see this wonderful movie before its national release. The historical comedy drama Misbehaviour and the family annimated adventure comedy from Disney Onward continue for another great weekend. THE WAR WITH GRANDPA Peter is thrilled that Grandpa is coming to live with his family. That is, until Grandpa moves into Peter's room, forcing him upstairs into the creepy attic. And though he loves his grandpa he wants his room back - so he has no choice but to declare war. With the help of his friends, Peter devises outrageous plans to make Grandpa surrender the room. But Grandpa is tougher than he looks. Rather than give in, Grandpa plans to get even. THE WITCHES Reimagining Roald Dahl's beloved story for a modern audience, Robert Zemeckis's visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy who,

NEW YEAR’S EVE GIVEAWAY

in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks him away to a seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world's Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globeundercover-to carry out her nefarious plans. Zemeckis is joined by a world-class team of filmmakers, including Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro and Kenya Barris. The cast includes powerhouse performances from Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Kristin Chenoweth and Chris Rock, with newcomer Jahzir Kadeen Bruno as the brave young hero. MISBEHAVIOUR 'Misbehaviour' tells an important story well; it's fairly fast-moving, has some great performances and is always engaging. While there's nothing outstanding in the filmmaking department, it's all well-done and supports its narrative by letting the characters and messages lead the way. Speaking of its messages, it has a great overall

pro-equality stance that goes deeper than its feminist roots, covering issues like social class and racism. In that regard, it's a very important film for today as it's sadly all too relatable to current affairs. The flick does have a slight issue with the story it wants to tell, though. It focuses on both the liberation group and the 'Miss World competitors', especially Mbatha-Raw's Jennifer Hosten. While this does give the chance to view things from different perspectives and allows for the exploration of more themes, it makes things feel slightly muddled. Perhaps it would've benefited from choosing one perspective to focus the story through to make things a little more streamlined. Still, both storylines are effective and the thing works as a whole, but it just feels like something which could have improved the proceedings slightly.

Overall, though, it's certainly worth the watch. ONWARD In a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, go on a journey to discover if there is still a little magic left out there in order to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him. Like any good quest, their journey is filled with magic spells, cryptic maps, impossible obstacles and unimaginable discoveries. When the boys' fearless mom, Laurel, realizes that her sons are missing, she teams up with the legendary winged-lion-scorpion former warrior -- The Manticore -- and heads off to find them. Perilous curses aside, this one magical day could mean more than any of them ever dreamed.

New pesticides target fall armyworm THE Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) have issued two additional permits for the use of certain pesticides to combat fall armyworm in sweetcorn and sugarcane. Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud said

the Australian Government was committed to supporting efforts here and abroad to manage and minimise the impact of this pest on production industries. “Since fall armyworm arrived in Queensland via natural pathways in January 2020, it has spread to the Northern Territory, Western Australia and northern

New South Wales,” Minister Littleproud said. “Fall armyworm is a serious agricultural pest. The larval or caterpillar stage of the moth’s lifecycle, can damage and destroy a wide variety of crops with the potential for large economic loss. “Approval of additional permits provides farmers and landowners with more tools to manage this pest.” Mr Littleproud said that the Australian Government recently provided $600,000 to Plant Health Australia to address critical gaps in national research and development which were identified in a national workshop. “Projects will investigate fall armyworm genetic research, pesticide resistance, commercial and native hosts, and modelling of seasonal impacts on population dynamics,” he said. “We are also investing through the Grains Research and Development Corporation. I welcome the recent publication of the National Fall Armyworm Continuity Plan. The plan will be an invaluable reference for professionals, specialist and consultants to prepare localised material.

The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a plant pest that can damage a wide variety of crops.

“Through these and other projects, we are supporting industry to minimise the impact of fall armyworm in Australia.” A spokesperson from the Department of Agriculture said that the APVMA has issued to permits specially for to cover sugarcane (PER89295 and

PER89384) “Users should refer to the APVMA permits database for full details on chemicals, use patterns, and directions for use which is available at www.portal.apvma.gov.au/permits,” they said. “The database allows search-

es by the name of product or active constituent, by permit number, by crop, animal or pest, or purpose for which the permit is issued.” For more information on fall armyworm go to: www.agriculture.gov.au/pests-diseasesweeds/plant/exotic-armyworm

LETTERS to the EDITOR HAVE YOUR SAY

Crocodile Menace

I GREW up around Mareeba in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. As a young person I was free to roam the creeks and rivers (Barron) swimming and fishing without fear of being eaten by a saltwater crocodile. We could even go to the beach (Four Mile at Port Douglas and beaches to the north and south) and swim and play. In the evening we could chase ghost crabs on the beach. We were aware of the dreaded box jellyfish and kept an eye out for it, but crocodiles – NO. We knew about them as my mother and father hunted them. Even foraging around in the mangroves was a family affair, adults and children digging for mussels, again not having a care in the world. Mosquitoes, sunburn and sand flies were the extent of danger. We even enjoyed bush trips, fishing and swimming in the west running rivers, the Walsh and Mitchell. But no more. Even a farmer going into his channel-fed creek to check his pump has to have a spotter to ensure he is not about to be attacked. Swimming in the Barron, Mitchell, Walsh, any of the beaches like Newell, Four Mile, Palm Cove, has become an anxious experience.

EMAIL: editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au

Why is this so? Crocodiles have always been here. Yes, but up until the late 60’s early 70’s there was an industry, albeit it small, of harvesting crocodile skins in the wild. In the outer places you still had to be croc wise and sensible, but generally the crocs were shy of people, possibly because they were being shot at. This industry, of which my family was a part, was closed down. No discussion, no consideration, no compensation; Just closed. Over the last 50 years there has been an explosion in the numbers of saltwater crocodiles. You don’t need a survey to prove it; just get in your tinnie and go up a coastal estuary somewhere. They have enlarged their original territory and are now apparently in the water ways around Mareeba. How dangerous is it to take your child for an afternoon swim in the river, or to the beach? Very dangerous. Is the tourism industry listening? Some would say there is an industry which has been built up around croc viewing. True, but when you reach the point where there are so many crocodiles occupying urban drains, river and creeks, and public safety is threatened, then something has to be done. There are plenty of crocodiles in tourist parks where those who want to get up

close and personal can do so. For those of us who still want to enjoy the beach and be able to take our kids to the river or beach, or even the reef, without the thought of a crocodile attack. WE ASK FOR ACTION. Coming from a family which lived off hunting, I think regulated hunting in all areas is the correct solution. As with kangaroos, responsible hunters could be issued with tags and if thought necessary, quotas. I am sure hunters would be more sophisticated than in the past, and whereas, in the past, the carcass would be wasted, it would these days with the aid of modern refrigeration be utilized. It is not hard to imagine a market for wild harvested croc meat, skin and other products. In the September 1966 edition of Queensland Agricultural Journal, Fauna Officer Mr. C Roff, published a report; “Crocodiles in Queensland”. He includes a distribution map which shows the distribution of saltwater crocodiles: this shows the main distribution to be in western peninsula coastal areas, with a lighter distribution on the east coast. There appears to be no inland distribution. Mr. Roff also notes; “the estuarine crocodile is regarded as a pest”. – Crikey, how things have changed. Mr. Roff also published “Bird Sightings on Cape York Peninsula” in “The Emu” Vol

66, Part III, February, 1967. I would not suggest saltwater crocodiles are at plague proportions, but they seem to be plentiful and impacting on the use and enjoyment of the environment by those of us who enjoy the outdoors. People may say that killing these animals will impact on a portion of the tourism industry, no doubt; but if it could be measured, I would argue that other parts of the tourism industry are also being impacted by the presence of these “pests”. Like the captain said in Jaws; “We need a bigger boat”, but you can’t drag a bigger boat hundreds of kilometers across rough roads to take your family fishing. It just doesn’t work. To those in authority, whether in the ivory towers of the bureaucracy or the gilded corridors of the Parliament, I ask; Please do something to ensure our safety. Barry Braes MAREEBA

OPINION With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1

Let us give thanks

THE only thing more unprecedented than 2020 was the use of the word unprecedented by the media. Yes it’s been a tough year and my heart goes out to anyone affected by death due to COVID, but I think COVID has actually taught us a few things. America has just celebrated Thanksgiving Day, so let us give thanks to a few things that we actually got right in 2020. The first reason to give thanks this year was the realisation that the voting public actually like politicians who take care of their residents and constituents. PM Scott Morrison was slow off the mark getting a grasp of the COVID situation, but once he understood the science and he started listening to his health professionals he made some gutsy decisions. The same goes for our Premier, who decided to keep the boarders closed and Queenslanders safe no matter how much pressure she received from NSW and the Federal government. The Premier always said the health of Queenslanders was her main concern and I believe her, hence why she was voted back in. The capitulation of the Trump government. Is it just me or does it seem like America is now a reality TV show where they have a buffoon Homer Simpson type character running the free world and then when everybody realises that he isn’t qualified for the job they vote him out, but here is the kicker he refuses to go! Classic TV! Let us give thanks to

Universal Basic Income. I hope we have all now realised (thanks to Jobkeeper) that Universal Basic Income is not some communist plot to make us all lazy and bring down capitalism. The Reserve Bank estimates it saved about 700,000 jobs and it served as a vital lifeline for many COVID-affected businesses. Turns out, it’s been cheaper than first expected, more like $100 billion because fewer businesses needed it than first expected. The reason why less business needed it? Because the people on Jobkeeper spent their money local. The environment is cleaner as a result of the global reduction in land and air travel. Reduced travel has produced an unprecedented (there’s that word again) reduction in global emissions, according to a recent study by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Working from home. Just about every person I know worked from home for a short while during the pandemic, so why do we need to go back to the office at all? Isn’t working from home the ultimate in work life balance? Let’s give thanks to science, as scientists have invented not one but multiple vaccines for COVID. Bring it on. Finally give yourself a pat on the back, if you’re reading this you survived a global pandemic. This is a one in one-hundredyear event and you’re still here to tell the tale to your grandkids. Congrats.

Children may be less than honest with you. Get involved in philosophic groups that will enlighten you. Invite friends in for a visit. Romantic opportunities will develop through friends or relatives.

This will not be the best day to try to push your ideas or concerns. You can make new connections if you play your cards right. Your temper could be short if someone criticises your efforts.

Scorpio

Oct 24 to Nov 22 Don’t allow your personal problems to interfere with your professionalism. You can make personal changes that will enhance your appearance and bring you greater popularity.

Your intellectual wit will bring greater popularity with your peers. You can handle situations that require contact with institutions or large corporations. Don’t overspend on friends or children.

Capricorn

April 21 to May 21

Aug 23 to Sept 23 Outings with relatives will provide you with stimulating conversation. It’s time to reevaluate your motives. You need an outlet that will not only stimulate you but also challenge your intelligence as well.

Libra Sept 24 to Oct 23

Taurus

Virgo

June 22 to July 22 Do not yield to children or relatives when they really don’t deserve it. Be careful how you deal with colleagues. Don’t let friends or relatives make you feel guilty if you’re not able to attend one of their affairs.

1. Place the instant coffee in the hot water and stir. Let cool for 5 minutes. 2. Beat heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Chill. 3. Mix icing sugar and marscarpone/cream cheese with a hand mixer until smooth. Mix in vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of the coffee. Add up to the entire amount of coffee, depending on how strong you want your tiramisu. Mix in vanilla. 4. Fold whipped cream into coffee mixture gently. Place the tiramisu in a ziploc bag that is fitted with a large round or 1M piping tip. 5. Pipe a small amount the bottom of each of 4 serving glasses op the layer with a dusting of cocoa powder. Continue layering the tiramisu and cocoa powder. 6. Once you get to the top layer, grate the semi-sweet baking chocolate over the tops of the serving dishes (instead of the dusting of cocoa powder). This gives a sweet first taste instead of being bitter from the unsweetened cocoa. Chill, covered, in the fridge until ready to serve.

zyszyn was picked in the CFN under 12 A team. Brooke Butler will star for the ladies after being chosen in the CFN under 15 girls side which will be play in Redlands from December 14 to 17.

THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has partnered with the University of Queensland (UQ) to conduct a survey on the effects of Esports on youth behaviour. Esports is a form of sport competition that revolves around video games and takes on the form of organised, multiplayer video game competitions where there is often prize money involved for winners. TRC Councillor Peter Hodge is encouraging eligible gamers to get involved in the survey. “Esports is one of the fastest growing industries and we’re keen to understand what the influences are on our youth,” he said. “This information will inform our current policies, give us tools to engage with disenfranchised youth in our community and identify strategies to tackle negative issues like addiction and aggression. “This is the first survey of its kind in regional Queensland and we’re hoping to capture the positive and negative impacts and career pathways related to Esports.” TRC is offering the chance to win one of eight $250 vouchers for filling out the survey; gamers between the ages of 12-18 are eligible for the survey.
