A BELOVED Tablelands grandma who became an institution across the region for submitting craft and sewing entries into the Atherton show for more than 85 years was laid to rest recently.

The much adored and loved Edna Beazley passed away just

days ago, three years short of her 100th birthday.

Since 1947 Ms Beazley had entered her work into various show categories including rugs, woodburning and dressed dolls.

Ms Beazley also took great joy in making crochets rugs, teddy bears and cushion covers that would go on to be used for raffle prizes.

“There is no question she had an immeasurable impact right across the Tablelands, not only for what she contributed to the show, but also what she did for all of her family,” a brave granddaughter Tammy Wilcox explained to The Express.

“Nanna was always there for everyone, we all turned to her for advice, she was the most

beautiful person you would ever meet.”

The 97-year-old was born on July 16, 1923 and was a mother to nine, gran of 44, great gran of 133 and great, great gran of 57.

Atherton Show organisers have confirmed that a minute silence will be held in Ms Beazley’s honour on the opening night of this year’s show.

Tablelanders awaiting planning study findings

BY MICHAEL WARREN THE State Government’s much awaited planning study initiated to identify and investigate the pressing requirements of road users between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands is expected to be completed in the coming months.

Tablelanders across the region have been eagerly waiting to digest the findings of the $1.6M study, with many keen

to see if it delivers a key recommendation that a new dual lane highway should be constructed between Mareeba and Cairns.

“Transport and Main Roads is finalising its planning study to investigate capacity, safety and efficiency improvements of transport routes between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands, including the Bridle Track (Kuranda bypass road),” Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey MP

told Hill MP Shane Knuth in recent written correspondence.

“The purpose of the project is to review previous planning and determine the most appropriate focus for future planning activities.

“Once the project is completely finalised, TMR will have a better understanding of the best way to improve access between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands.”

Meanwhile, the Kuranda

bypass road steering committee were expected to put forward a resolution at a schedule meeting last night to instruct local State and Federal members to seek funds to construct the bypass road.

Lastly, the mess surrounding the ongoing future of the Barron River crossing shows no sign of ending anytime soon.

The State’s $2.1M investigation announced back in March to finally determine whether

the aging structure should be replaced or rehabilitated is only expected to get underway in the coming months.

“Construction of any solutions identified through this planning remains unfunded,” Mr Bailey revealed to Mr Knuth.

The bridge’s future has been a continued point of contention around the Tablelands with road users experiencing end-

less delays and ongoing frustration since TMR introduced traffic lights at either end and reduced the structure to a single lane only at the back end of last year.

Mr Bailey confirmed that TMR expects the “changed traffic conditions to remain in place (on the bridge) until October, while investigations, testing and repairs are carried out.”

A KURANDA Tour booking company has questioned why local reef operators still cannot run at full capacity despite the Queensland Government’s recent relaxing of social distancing restrictions which allow larger sized crowds to attend outdoor events.

As it stands there is no current limit on how many people can attend outdoor events in Queensland.

However local operators such as those that run day tours to the Great Barrier Reef are still subject to capped on board numbers because of various COVID regulations and restrictions.

“I find it amazing that thousands of people can attend a football game, a plane can be filled to the brim with passengers virtually sitting on each other’s laps yet a vessel going

to the reef can be half empty due to different COVID restriction rules,” Fred Van Oyen from The Buzz Tour booking agency lamented.

Meanwhile, despite a fair amount of doom and gloom in the tourism industry over the past 12 months the small booking agency says there is still cause for some optimism just yet.

Locals to lose jobs as CSIRO centralises operations

BY MICHAEL WARREN AROUND six fulltime Atherton CSIRO employees face the prospect of future relocation or a redundancy package after being notified that day-to-day branch operations will be centralised and shifted to Townsville.

In a further knock on effect a number of other businesses that share the same building including Barron Catchment Care, Teran NRM, Cape York NRM and JCU all need to secure new digs to conduct their business affairs with owner, CSIRO, expected to sell the building.

“I am informed CSIRO is pursuing the continued expan-

sion of the Australian Tropical Sciences and Innovation Project (ATSIP) located at JCU in Townsville,” Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Christian Porter MP told Kennedy MP Bob Katter in recent written correspondence.

“I am advised as part of this expansion CSIRO made the decision to close its Atherton site by mid 2022 with work and staff from Atherton to be consolidated at ATSIP. “This includes offering permanent staff from Atherton a transfer to the ATSIP in Townsville.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said he was gutted by the

decision to shut the local CSIRO office in Atherton.

“CSIRO provides a vital service to the region with public reference herbarium, an arboretum and student accommodation and is a well-known hub for research which attracts scientists from around the world,” Mr Knuth said.

“Moving this service from the Tablelands to Townsville is a bed step backwards considering that we are right in the heart of the rainforest, Great Barrier Reef and is an agriculture hub.

“The need for research to combat feral pests and noxious weeds is now greater than ever with feral pigs and the intrusion

“It is a devastating blow to the community to move this organization and the flow on effects of moving this five hours away means the Tablelands missis out again.

“I have seen in the past where smaller communities are done over, to centralise work forces into the major cities and we don’t want to lose another vital service on the Tablelands.”

Mr Katter was equally disappointed.

“We used to have more than 129 scientists in the Kennedy Electorate, now there’s probably under 20,” Mr Katter exclusive-

ly told The Express.

“All that handed down wisdom and knowledge, from over 100 years, will never be retrieved.

“Knowledge of local conditions and history is in people’s head, not written down In books or on the internet.

“This Liberal National Government has destroyed countless industries through deregulation (tobacco, maize, dairy, sugar etc) and now they’re taking away more jobs from the regional areas.

“Shame on them. The thrust of the old Country Party of Joh’s

“I am now calling the LNP ‘ring-barking right’. They kill the tree but they don’t take the timber. The tree is the mechanism by which the soil is enriched. Leaves fall on the ground and enrich the soil.

“Since the Coalition won power off Keating and Hawke we have watched disastrous decline of income, population and a plethora of damaged dreams.”

Agriculture weathers COVID storm AGRIBUSINESS and the food sector are holding up well as Queensland’s economy recovers from the COVID pandemic.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the latest data showed the value of Queensland’s primary

industry commodities to be just over $19 billion.

“While this is slightly down on the average for the past five years, it’s a 1% uptick from 2019–20,” Mr Furner said.

“The largest contributors to the current output, by estimated GVP, are meat products (46%), horticulture (30%), sugar (8%)

and cereal products (7%), with output volumes growing on average by 5% per year.

“Agriculture in all its forms still constitutes a vital part of the Queensland economy, and a key strength as we implement Queensland’s Economic Recovery Plan.”

Tablelands homeowner issues timely warning

A Tablelands homeowner has issued a warning to others to choose wisely when picking the right tenant.

Calls for equitable water pricing THE region’s leading horticulture advocacy group has backed calls for more equitable water pricing for rural and regional areas.

In April, the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) released its review of regulatory pricing principles for water which included urban and rural water services,

of which Sunwater is the dominant provider outside south-east Queensland.

Joe Moro, chair of FNQ Growers which represents hundreds of horticultural growers who are irrigation customers of the Mareeba Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme, said rural water pricing for regions such as

FNQ should be governed by the efficient recovery of prudent costs, in a way that is transparent, predictable and simple.

“Access to reliable, affordable water is one of the most critical factors in the future success and growth of horticulture in Far North Queensland,” Mr Moro said.

“Without equitable pricing, our horticultural industries are at risk of faltering, with no vehicle for growth and expansion.

“This would have dire consequences on industry viability and that of our rural and regional communities.”

A TABLELANDS homeowner has issued a timely warning to fellow landlords offering private rentals - properly screen your incoming tenants or potentially encounter the same unwanted scenario she has experienced over the past few weeks.

The landlord who spoke to The Express on condition of anonymity said she was “too trusting” and should have spent more time checking rental references after a tenant went rogue and left the homeowner with piles of filthy rubbish and one very sizeable headache upon vacating the property.

The homeowner has implored others to be wary of similar situations.

“The tenant left so much rub-

bish around the place we had to get skips to put it all in,” the distressed homeowner said.

“Aside from that, there were locks on security doors that were broken.

“I want to get it out there and remind others’ to be very thorough in their rental checks to ensure they get the right person to move in. You never know who you are allowing to move into a rental property.

“At the moment there are so many people looking for rentals around the Tablelands so you try and do the right thing and help people, but things like this make you think twice.”

The Atherton Lionesses have built a reputation over the years for their hard work and enthusiasm for fundraising.

Aside from raising funds Lionesses spent time participating in local, district, state and national seminars, forums and conventions.

The first Lioness club was formed in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina in 1975, while the following year the first club was established in Australia.

New $3.2 million project helps graziers and the Great Barrier Reef fields and would support several graziers to fence off waterways and install off-stream watering systems for cattle.

The Upper Herbert Sediment Reduction Project is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

“We are really looking forward to this – we’ll also be working with the Mulloon Institute for the first time, helping landholders to prevent further erosion on their land, and with visiting grazing and soil health specialists who al-

Terrain NRM will work with landholders changing their grazing management practices in a project focused on reducing the amount of fine sediment in the Herbert River catchment’s waterways.

Terrain’s Jen Mackenzie said the team would also repair major gully and streambank erosion on two properties through rock chutes and pile

ready work successfully with landholders in this region,” Ms Mackenzie said.

The new project will complement a Herbert Gully and Grazing Program that has been running for the past three years, funded by the Australian Government and delivered by Terrain NRM. The project has led to reductions in sediment loads through gully erosion remediation work and changes to grazing management practices.

“These projects are benefitting the land, the Reef and graziers with their soil health

and natural grazing practices focus,’’ Ms Mackenzie said.

“The new Upper Herbert Sediment Reduction Project will build on the success of our existing project and expand our reach of support for landholders in the Herbert catchment.”

Herbert River catchment extends 340km from the Herberton and Ravenshoe areas to the coastal region of Ingham.

It is one of the three biggest contributors of sediment loads to the Great Barrier Reef.

Sediment is one of the major materials affecting the health of the Reef.

Field Days labelled huge success THE Rotary FNQ Field Days have been labelled a huge success with thousands of people taking part in festivities during the three days of the iconic event at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

Locals and visitors from far and wide enjoyed an array of activities including 4WD off road demonstrations, tractor pulls, working machinery displays, caravan safety presentations and mental health seminars.

The largest field days in Northern Australia experienced mixed weather with organisers already turning their attention to how they can deliver an even bigger and better event in 2023.

“The feedback has been ex-

ceptional, the patrons that have spoken to me have expressed how much they enjoyed the field days this year,” Rotary FNQ Field Days chairman Trevor Duncan told The Express.

“As usual the tractor pull was very popular while the boar buster demonstrations were also a crowd favourite. More broadly a lot of the exhibitors also reported that they experienced excellent traffic over the three days as well.”

“I’ve had a few people mention to me just how much they enjoyed the ‘are you bogged presentations’, which is excellent because they are so worthwhile going to,” Mr Duncan said.

“Any loss of life is tragic, so to have a presentation at the Field Days that help rural men is a real positive for us. Mary does an excellent job with those presentations.”

The money raised at the Field Days goes straight back into the community with both Mareeba and Atherton Rotary Clubs splitting the share to assist a range of chosen charities and organisations.

Rural males are twice as likely to take their lives than their city counterparts.

Ms O’ Brien reemphasised that there is always a way to become ‘unbogged’, and that starts by getting help and simply talking to someone.

IT’S often said men prefer to suffer in silence than discuss their problems but mental health advocate Mary O’ Brien hopes a series of learnings from her Rotary FNQ Field Days seminars will assist and prevent future males from regional areas from becoming ‘bogged’.

For the past three years O’Brien has run her ‘are you bogged mate’ presentations across the country with the sole aim of starting community conversations about the rising issue of depression and suicide rates among men in rural areas.

“Men are three to four times more likely to take their own life than women and the further you move from the coast into regional, rural and remote Australia, the figure climbs,” Ms O’ Brien explained.

“Seven Australian men take their lives each day and that is simply way too many. In fact it’s the leading cause of death for males aged between 15-44 years, which is a terrible statistic.

“We want people to know the warning signs of males feeling bogged and assist them with getting the right help – that is the main aim of these seminars.”

New destination marketing campaign for Tablelands THE Atherton Tablelands is the focus of a new and exciting regional destination marketing campaign aimed at attracting the self-drive and fly-drive market to experience the rich heritage charm, outstanding natural beauty, foodie and cultural attractions of the region.

A Discover visitor guide, a 52-page magazine, along with its new printed companion Discover touring map, was recently launched to Tourism Atherton Tablelands’ members at KurCow in Kuranda.

Chair of the local tourism organisation Eddy Nye said the launch would officially kick

off a six-month Discover Perfect campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the Atherton Tablelands and its hero experiences.

“We have been able to build on the success of Discover magazine visitor guide, which has been the major in-print promotional publication for our region over the last three decades,” Mr Nye said.

“This is an exciting and dynamic all-encompassing marketing campaign that stretches across print, TV, social media, Atherton Tablelands’ digital assets, direct mail, and publicity.”

Mr Nye said 80,000 visi-

tor guides have been printed and will be distributed through visitor information centres, and major caravan and camping shows.

In addition, 150,000 touring maps will also soon hit the market with a targeted focus on the key drive regions from Townsville to Rockhampton.

“The Atherton Tablelands is a popular self-drive destination and we are excited to encourage those that live within one day’s drive to experience for themselves why it is so special,” Mr Nye explained.

The touring map also incorporates user-friendly themed

trail maps, which will be available on the Discover Atherton Tablelands app, for Apple and Android devices.

The self-drive trails combine postcard-perfect landscapes, indulgent gourmet delights, cultural and historic highpoints and stunning natural attractions.

“There are seven themed drives – Heritage, Great Outdoors, Museums and Galleries, Waterfalls and Waterways, Geological Wonders, Landscapes, and Wildlife and Food Trails.

These are designed to link tourism attractions and activities across the region,” Mr Nye

said.

“While visitors can tailor their holiday around the types of experiences that interest them, the routes are designed to take them through the various towns and areas and introduce them to new and different activities to enjoy.”

Mr Nye said letterbox drops and in-print advertising would also be underpinned by a twomonth television campaign.

Phase two of the marketing activity will also see social media advertising, a digital video showcase, and a consumer competition to win a holiday on the Atherton Tablelands.

Mr Nye also acknowledged Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) for its support of the new initiative.

“Discover has the largest distribution of any regional visitor guide and the trails are a hit with travellers so producing the Touring Map was an obvious move,” he said.

“We are delighted with the quality of our Discover Magazine, which can also be accessed online and via the Discover App. It’s the most comprehensive, informative and engaging publication in the region, which has been the cornerstone of its success over all these years.”

BETTER TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS FOR QUEENSLAND

A Mount Isa man has received three letters from the Queen in the past six years all thanking him for his lovely poems for ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, and most recently, his “Grandma” poem.

Roy Flood was born in Chillagoe and lived on the Tablelands for a majority of his life before moving to Mt Isa in 1977.

With a passion for words and putting smiles on people faces he used his skills to construct three poems that have earned praise from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

The first two poems were about ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day respectfully, while the most recent one, written in 2017, was depicting the Queen and her “grandmother” persona.

Mr Flood said that he was honoured that the Queen had read and then responded to his letters and poems.

“It’s absolutely wonderful, you can see the kindness in the letters,” he said.

“It inspires me, once you get something like that you go ‘wow’, it’s something really precious to me.”

High flying Mareeba student takes on Aeronautics

Minjin McInnes is ready for take off in his career of aeronautical engineering.

MAREEBA State High School (MSHS) student Minjinarkle (Minjin) McInnes has been recognised as a high flyer future aeronautical engineer who has just completed work experience at Northern Gulf for Grade 10.

The unique job of being an aeronautical engineer would require Minjin to work designing aircraft and propulsion systems.

Minjin said that he became interested in the field when he began Air Force cadets four years ago with his siblings.

“I do Air Force cadets and have been for four years and I got involved in their programs,” he said.

“They can offer me gliding courses and drone licenses which can help in my career.”

As a part of Minjin’s journey to the end of high School,

he did work experience with Northern Gulf, who were impressed by his willingness to become an aeronautical engineer.

He says that his experiences in the workforce were a lot of fun and he benefited most when working with drones, which he believes will assist him in his career.

“I also learnt how to fly and use drones which was a lot of fun,” he said.

“I think aviation has taken a big step with drones especially if you know how to fly and handle them well.

“It is better to design drones in the future for aeronautical engineering.”

Minjin will graduate high school in two years and will soon be creating and flying the planes that we see in the sky every day.

Marked roads for safety ENTRY roads into Mareeba have been recently marked with a fresh red section of paint signaling the installation of new Township Entry Treatment (TET) from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

These new TET areas are being installed as part of a wider $17.27 million program of road safety upgrades across Queensland.

TET acts as a speed manage-

ment treatment which involves the installation of signage and pavement making at the entry points of a town, informing and signaling drivers to slow down.

In Mareeba’s case these new TET areas have been installed where there is a speed change from the outskirts of Mareeba which is typically 80km/h to 60km/h.

The works have commenced and is expected to be completed mid 2021 weather permitting.

Entry points into Mareeba have recently been painted over in a distinctive red paint as a part of new Township Entry Treatment, informing drivers to slow down when entering town.

New energy project for Ravenshoe THE green light has been given to Far North Queensland latest renewable energy project with the Kaban Green Power Hub set to commence construction in 2021.

Located in Ravenshoe the project was initially approved in 2017 with development continuing until last year in preparation for construction.

The new wind farm built by Neoen, will provide 457,000 megawatts of power an hour out of its 28 turbines delivering more, clean energy into Queensland’s power grid.

Neoen’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Xavier Barbaro said that he is delighted to deliver another clean energy source for Queenslanders.

“As one of the world’s leading and fastest growingindependent renewable energy producers, we are committed to delivering affordable, reliable

and clean energy to our counterparts,” he said.

“I would also like to thank and congratulate our Australian team for achieving over 2 GW of assets operating and under construction.

“Australia is Neoen’s leading country and will be a key contributor to our global target of 10 GW by the end of 2025.”

The Kaban Green Power Hub will provide over 250 construction jobs during the construction faze running from 2021 to 2022 and power to over 100,000 Queensland homes.

After construction a $50,000 annual Community Benefit Fun will provide grants for local community building initiatives, similar to the Mount Emerald Wind Farm grants.

Construction on the Kaban Green Power Hub is set to commence this year with an expected lifespan of 25 to 30 years.

Homework centre to increase high school student’s learning THE Palaszczuk Government has taken its first steps to install 120 free after hour homework facilities in Queensland, with Mareeba State High School (MSHS) being one of the Tablelands schools to apply.

Education Minister Grace Grace told Parliament two weeks ago that she believes it is important for every child to have the ability to do homework, especially those whose parents may be too busy.

MSHS Principal Scott Whybird said that his school will be applying for a centre and believes it will benefit the school community and families who find difficulty providing support.

“I think it is a positive opportunity for students who need assistance after school and this is an investment in developing

a learning culture that extends beyond the classroom,” he said.

“Families that may have limited space that can’t provide an area for students to study such as families from non-English Speaking backgrounds or families that don’t have access to technology or may be struggling financially.

“Getting a teenager to study on an empty stomach is difficult.

I also feel that a lack of study centres/study businesses in Mareeba makes this type of project a positive one for the students of the school.”

Mr Whybird and MSHS will hopefully see things moving with their new homework centre in Semester Two this year and hopes to see this centre not only increase learning abilities but employment in the school.

BY ELLIE FINK MAREEBA State School (MSS) hall became the scene of missing gold last week, with 80 of their top science students in charge of finding evidence and solving the crime.

A and B level science students were required to complete activities set up around their school hall to find evidence of which class mate was the culprit.

Travelling Science Educator from Education Interactive Jamie-Lee Thompson hosted the workshop using her knowledge in the forensic field.

“I used to work as a forensic science researcher by finding ways we can find DNA and fingerprints to solve crimes and I have a background in teaching so I have combined the things I

love,” she said.

“The scenario was a crime where we had found an individual unconscious and there was some missing treasure on a marina.

“The kids had to work out how this person got hurt and find the treasure.”

Ms Thompson said that the overall goal was important in growing a team of forensic scientists.

“The goal today is to help the kids to solve the crime as well as help them find a career in science and teach them how fun science can be and inspire them to think about going into science,” she said.

“Hopefully the workshop taught them what forensic science is and showed them the different types of biology and chemistry used in forensics.”

MSS Head of Department Curriculum Prep-Grade 2 Valarie Dayes said that her and college Nadine Apps decided this workshop would show high achieving children what forensics is like in real life.

“We came across this workshop through our promotional material and it looked really engaging and like something the students would really enjoy and something that might challenge our students who need some extension work,” she said.

“We chose Forensics because it is something that children see a lot on TV and in movies so we thought it would engage them and bridge the gap between what they see on TV and what happens in real life.”

Calling artists from the Cape ARTISTS from across the Cape are invited to submit artwork that they believe represents their community for an opportunity to have their work featured at the Gateway to Cape York Sculptural Park in Lakeland.

Anyone from art centres, schools or individuals can submit their work if they are from one of the 16 communities: Wujal Wujal, Cooktown, Lockhart River, Port Stewart, Coen, Iron range, Bamaga, Pajinka, Mapoon, Weipa, Napranum, Aurukun, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Hope Vale and Laura.

A panel from each community will decide which piece best embodies the uniqueness of their area and will assist in the construction and installation in the park.

These artists will work with a professional sculptural artist and fabricator to see the concept come to life, as well as be awarded $500 for their design.

Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said that he is excited to see the project go ahead and show the rich diversity of the Cape.

“There is a richness in the diversity of cultures, country

and communities across the Cape,” he said.

“Conserving and preserving the land and the stories that define each community is what connects us all.

“The sculptural park at the Gateway to Cape York is a fantastic project that will promote these messages through art to tourists and visitors to the Cape.”

Dairy Queens herald show season WITH show-time soon approaching, the Malanda Pastoral, Agricultural and Industrial Society Inc are dusting off the crowns and tiaras and shaking out the ermine cloaks in readiness for the crowning of the 2021 Dairy Queen and Princess.

It will be no easy task for judges, Assistant Principal of

St Teresa's school, Katie Ball, businesswoman, Geraldine McGuire and veterinarian, Bill Tranter, to pick this year's winners from the two Queen and four Princess entrants.

Dairy Queen Co-ordinator and Secretary, Georgia Doull, herself a Dairy Queen in 2016, said the quality of girls involved in this year's

quest was incredible. "They are so accomplished and passionate about their areas of interest."

At their first informal get together in Malanda last week, Ms Doull told the entrants that the quest was a journey in self development.

"You might feel scared now, but by the end of this, you

will have gained a lot of confidence and built a lot of connections within your community that will serve you well in the future," Mrs Doull said.

The competition will unfold in four stages, starting with a Meet and Greet and working bee, during which the girls can become more comfortable with each other,

followed by an information and Ball preparation session focusing on deportment and public speaking.

Next, an informal 10 minute interview on various topics with the judges and finally, the official presentation and judging of the entrant after the delivery of their speeches on stage at the Casino Roy-

ale themed Malanda Show Ball on June 12.

Kicking off with a cocktail bar at the Malanda Show Pavilion at 6.30pm, the Ball will be a glittering affair featuring live music, a light supper, surprise entertainment and a courtesy bus to deliver patrons home at the end of the night.

Jordan enjoys parading cattle in the local shows and working with horses in her spare time.

Hannah has exhibited both beef and dairy cattle at the local show with her family’s Eachamvale Illawarra stud.

Raised on her family’s local dairy farm, Eachamvale, she now milks cows on three other farms in the area.

Hannah volunteers in the kitchen at beef and dairy schools run by the Malanda Show Society and carries out valuable mentoring roles with young attendees.

She hopes to study veterinary science after school before travelling to America and working in specialist cattle clinics.

Rachel is an accomplished Junior Judge, Parader and Fitter of cattle. She enjoys raising, training and showing dairy cattle, particularly Illawarras and has experience working for other dairy studs and showing cattle across the east coast of Australia. She said she joined the quest to meet new people and to push herself to do things outside of her comfort zone.

Chloe is a Year 11 prefect at Atherton High School and was a 2021 representative in the Youth Parliament for the Hill electorate.

She is an active volunteer for the Millaa Millaa Community Gym and aims to study veterinary nursing after graduating from high school. She joined the quest to help her gain confidence and to have a little fun.

Belle, a year 8 student, makes her own hair accessories in her spare time and hopes to develop her sewing skills and widen her range of hair products over the coming years.

Jess has returned to the Tablelands after 3 years of working on cattle stations in the Charters Towers region and currently manages a beef property outside Malanda.

Jess is completing a horticulture traineeship with a local nursery and is keen to establish a career in agriculture once she has finished her studies. Stud cattle go well at Field Days

Kenadon Brahman principals, Barry and Faye Osborne were first time cattle exhibitors at the 2021 Field Day and said they would be returning.

THE proposed cattle auction may not have gone ahead at this year's Field Day, but vendors and customers alike were more than pleased with the way things panned out.

Barry and Kaye Osborne of Kenadon Brahmans, from the Daintree area reported a lot of interest in their cattle, especially on Friday, when the scheduled sale brought a large contingent of lookers through the cattle area. It was the first time they had shown cattle at the event, but Mr Osborne said they would be back for the next one.

Shane Strazzeri of Barronessa Farming experienced a very successful few days, selling 4 bulls to Georgetown graziers Darren and Melissa Pedracini of Lornevale Station. The Pedracinis paid to a top of $8,000 for two Charbrays, one Charolais and one Brangus bull.

Mr Pedracini said he had visited Barronessa Farming last August during the Better Beef Open Day, which showcased the Tableland's premium cattle, and liked what he saw. He and his wife returned to Mareeba to secure some of the cattle and put them to work at home.

“The 22 month old Brangus bull will go in as a replacement bull with a paddock of 300 grey cows and the 2 Charbrays will start work in a paddock running 500 red cows,” he said.

I have been looking for a

good Charolais bull for a while to put over a mob of Charbray heifers and 19 month old should be ideal. We will breed a few paddock bulls for our operation with him and will probably sell a few of the bulls to some our regular clients as well.

“I liked the look of these bulls, they are clean-coated, beefy and display excellent muscling. Their slick coats should work in their favour coping with the excess of ticks and flies we encounter in the far north.”

Pleased with the three days spent in Mareeba, Mr Strazzeri said his family had been bringing bulls to the event for about 14 years.

“It’s a great place to run into clients and being able to put our cattle in front of the region's cattle producers brings in new buyers and makes it easier for our repeat customers,” he said.

All of the vendors have experienced a lot of interest and it would be great if the auction did happen at the 2023 Field Day. We will have plenty of time to get organised for it next time and it should be a great success.”

A total of 11 studs had a variety of breeds, including Brahmans, Droughtmasters, Ultra Blacks, Murray Greys and Shorthorns on display. The high quality and excellent temperament of the cattle made them a favourite with the crowds.

Bumper peanut harvest underway on Tablelands

Like many other Tableland growers, P3 Farms Paul Pensini was busy harvesting his first peanut crop in years recently, reestablishing Far North Queensland as Australia’s major producer of the popular and versatile nut.

THE bumper peanut harvest currently underway on the Tablelands is set to re-establish the far north as the nation's leading producer of this delicious legume, according to Tolga Branch Manager of Peanut Company Australia, A Bega Company, Jenny Wenham.

Clearly excited about this year's crop which had almost tripled in volume compared to the last few years, Ms Wenham said 2021 had delivered the almost perfect combination of moisture, heat units and clear harvest weather which were proving a win-win situation for growers.

“After a slight weather-related delay, our more than 40 growers are now fully into the harvest of their stand out peanuts.

The quality of the 1700ha under crop is extremely good featuring jumbo kernels which are returning higher prices for farmers,”

he said.

“We want Australia to know, we are back into the market place in a big way this year and will once again be able to supply the nation's demand for peanuts.

This area produces almost half of the Australia's peanuts and growers received the ideal season to deliver volume and quality.”

Kairi farmer, Paul Pensini was hoping the weather was going to hold long enough for the harvester to finish threshing the 160 acres of peanuts he planted just after Christmas.

Mr Pensini said he hadn't grown peanuts for six or seven years, but the better price on offer combined with the boost in yield that peanuts provided to follow on crops in a rotational system, made them an attractive option this year.

Back in 2012, peanuts were worth around $2,300/Tonne before falling away to $1400 to an isolated $1900/Tonne over the following seven years, be-

fore climbing back to a high of $3,257/Tonne in April last year.

Although that April high had dipped to $2,585/Tonne by Dec of 2020, that rate was attractive enough to draw a large contingent of growers back into the peanut producing arena.

P3 Farms spokesman Paul Pensini said “last year's late wet meant a late plant just after Christmas, plants were fertilised and sprayed for fungicidal leaf diseases at planting.”

“It takes 4-5 months for a peanut plant to grow and they produce 25-50 peanuts per bush, when mature. Then there is only a small picking window before the pegs on the peanut shells weaken causing them to snap and be lost during harvest pick up," he said.

The Pensini's crop has been returning a healthy 2 - 2 1/2 tonnes/acre, but a 9" (225mm) fall just prior to harvest has had quite a dramatic effect on picking results. The rich, red Golden Triangle soils can get quite sticky when wet and Mr Pensini said he had been losing from 15-20% of his peanuts during cutting and digging.

Peanuts can stick to the soil and be lost during this first stage of harvest when bushes are cut, lifted and shaken to remove excess dirt, before being inverted and left in windrows for 4-5 days to dry.

Once threshed, the nuts, which had been contracted to Bega (Peanut Company of Australia) were trucked to the Tolga depot for cleaning, shelling and bagging in 1 Tone bags, ready to be transported to Kingaroy.

Due to their peanut planting hiatus, most of the Pensini crop would be sold for seed. “Because we planted into clean ground, there was minimal disease risk, making the crop suited to the seed buyers. What to plant is a year to year decision,” Mr Pensini said.

“We normally produce a lot of Rhodes Grass seed, but we are harvesting around 50 - 70 tonnes of Brachiaria seed at the moment and the same bins are needed to dry both seed species, so we have had to make a choice between the two.

“We are also baling Rho-

des Grass hay at the moment.

We normally bale 4-5000 of the big 500kg square bales for sale to Townsville, Charters Towers, Julia Creek and north to the Karumba live export yard when they were doing a lot of boats out of there.

“Unfortunately to a certain extent, Tableland farmers rely on the misfortune of western graziers to create big demand for

hay and much of Queensland has had a better season this year,” he said.

Pensini's P3 Farms have been undergoing a bit of a company restructure recently with the sale of their coastal cattle block and their 34,500 acre breeder block, Ooralat Station, 40kms west of Mt Surprise, causing a reduction in stock numbers from 3,000 head down to 400.

Meanwhile, they have bought and are in the process of developing an additional 500 acres of country near Kairi, they run a general freight business between the Tablelands and Brisbane and harvest around 2-3,000 tonnes of potatoes each winter. Looks like another pretty busy winter and spring ahead for the family.

The Mareeba netball courts were full of teams ranging from Tully to Port Douglas as they hosted the Marlin Coast Regional Representative Carnival.

EIGHTEEN teams from around the region including Port Douglas, Tully, Innisfail, Cairns, Atherton and Mareeba all travelled to Mareeba on Sunday May 30 for the Fowler’s Group Marlin Coast Regional Representative Carnival.

Marlin Coast Netball Academy presented scholarships to players during presentation to support the travel expenses for upcoming events.

Mareeba Netball Association entered four teams in the carnival U16, U15, U14 and

U12. Each team played approximately six games during the day, each were highly competitive.

Mareeba Netball President Michelle Cifuentes said that this was the first time the carnival was able to be held in two years.

“It was great to see this level of netball return to Mareeba,” she said.

“This carnival helps to develop representative teams and prepare them for higher level competition throughout the season.

“It also provided opportu-

nity to develop our umpires, coaches and managers, our association was supported throughout the day by a large group of volunteers who helped to make this event a success.”

On Saturday June 5 Mareeba Netball will be hosting a round robin mixed netball social competition.

Mareeba Netball is encouraging people to join in playing netball during this time and provide a fundraising opportunity for their U15 State Age team who will travel to the Sunshine Coast in July.

THE first game of basketball last Thursday swayed back and forth with the favoured Red Devils scratching out 18 points to the Ballers 13 at quarter time.

By the end of the second quarter, Ballers postured for 37 to the Devils 34, By the third quarter the Ballers were just barely holding on at 57 to 55.

Ethan Cummings was finding rhythm with his shot (24 points) and making assists to the likes of Dean Gallo, full time score had Ballers emerge 82 to 78.

Three of the Devils gener-

ated honourable personal tallies, Zayd Myrteza 27, Zac Myrteza 24, Ricaydan Wason 17.

Closing out round 8 of the Mareeba Men’s Basketball Competition, it looked like a six-man squad of Buckets would struggle to run out a full game against the inform team Stingrays.

However, the Bucket brigade brought some fire of their own, amassing 91 points to shadow the Stingray haul of 103.

Stingray Zemekis Hunter scored 29 points including six triples, ably supported by Ryan

Mawdsley, 23 and captain Warren Thomson 20 points including six triples.

Discerning pundits are also now noticing that Mawdsley and Thomson defend tenaciously for the entirety of each game.

For the runners up, centre Brennan Collis bagged 43 points and captain Ben Washington chipped in for 27 on a high scoring night.

The Buckets really need one more player to conjure genuine mischief for the two top teams in the competition.

Rain kept away for Bulls win AFTER a missed chance due to rain a fortnight ago the Mareeba Bulls Mens Premier Side took ahold of their latest chance last weekend winning against the Southside Comets.

Rain dampened play last fortnight but was nowhere to be seen on Saturday as the Mens Premier side took to Lindsay Stadium with blue skies and fire in their eyes.

Coach Angelo Tatti said that it was a hard-fought win and it reminded him of the games played in the 90s and early 2000s.

“It was a really good physical game, a tough hard-fought win, the game started nicely then it swung and went really physical with tackles,” he said.

“The boys did well I can’t complain, we dominated most

of the match and Souths scored through one of our silly errors.

“It’s quite positive going into next week playing against Stratford.”

Mareeba was able to come away with a 2-1 win, while the Premier Ladies side had a bye.

Up next for the Mareeba Bulls is an away game against the Stratford Dolphins.

A LOCAL Mareeba woman has broken into the bodybuilding ranks after taking out four first places at the recent Australian National Bodybuilding (ANB) competition held in Townsville.

Annette Price participated in the ANB held in Townsville at the end of May, taking out four first place finishes.

Competing in the figure international short category, Annette entered as a novice as this was her first time competing and not only did she win both the figure and international short category, but also overall figure from all the categories.

This was not all however as she also was voted the best poser out of the figure category, quite an achievement as she only just started to compete in bodybuilding.

“I was always into fitness and a few years ago I did a powerlifting comp and came second for my weight grade, after that I decided I wanted to do something a little more challenging,” Annette said.

“I feel incredible, I treated this as a stepping stone to really build, to get my foot in the door and really experience what competing is like.

“The added bonus just happened to be that I won my categories.”

Annette trained under the watchful eye of coach and mentor Joey Clark, another Mareeba bodybuilder who made headlines some years ago contesting Mr Universe.

Now Annette will be looking towards next year for the next competition, giving her time to properly prepare.

Mareeba set to host NQ Super Sedan Titles THE Mareeba Speedway will once again come alive with the roaring sounds of engines as they host the NQ Super Sedan Titles to open their racing season.

Typically held in Brisbane, the NQ Super Sedan Titles have moved shop from the south east corner and temporarily settled down at the

Mareeba Speedway this Saturday.

President of the Mareeba Speedway Zach Howell said he was extremely excited to host the titles and open the racing season.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a big field of super sedans up here,” he said.

“To have the field and the

drivers that are coming up is very exciting.

“We (the committee) are very excited to be able to host this event.”

The number one super sedan driver in Australia currently, Matt Pascoe, will be making the trip up north to participate in the race.

Step-by-step guide to the great outdoors David Walmsley and Ben Sibthorpe have started the Youtube channel Escape 2 FNQ with the hopes of encouraging visitors and locals alike to explore the surrounding areas.

TWO outdoor enthusiasts have decided to share their passion with the hopes of encouraging people to get out and enjoy the wonders of the far north.

Escape 2 FNQ was created by friends Ben Sibthorpe and David (Dave) Walmsley, both

of which are avid hikers, motorbike riders and outdoor explorers.

With the aim to encourage people to get outside and enjoy what the surrounding areas have to offer, Ben and Dave created the Escape 2 FNQ youtube channel.

Documenting their hikes and rides and other activities they

hope to provide people with a sort of guide on how to get out and start exploring with a stepby-step guide on what to expect and how difficult it may be.

“We’re both interested in the great outdoors, but we see there is a lack of information so if you want to go somewhere it’s really hard to find information about trails or walks,” Ben said.

“If your someone new to the area and want to go for one of these walks, where do you go for the information?

“We saw a lack of information that may be hampering people getting outside and exploring the local areas.”

After seeing this lack of information Ben and Dave took it upon themselves to use their

knowledge of the area and their passion, to assist those who may want to explore, but do not have the means or the confidence.

This also provides visitors a chance to explore the Tablelands area without much difficulty having detailed videos of the areas, hikes or walks already done.

Now with Escape 2 FNQ, people can watch detailed videos about certain hikes, areas or rides and know what to expect, what to take and how difficult it may be.
