Anger over shock removal of trees

BY ROBYN HOLMES WALKAMIN residents are angry that large eucalyptus trees and shrubs have been chopped down as part of the Kennedy Highway upgrade, saying they were never consulted and are now exposed to unacceptable highway noise and lights.

Main Roads began removing the trees and significantly trimming others to allow for intersection upgrades between Wilga Street and Wattle Street early last week, sparking outrage from Hibiscus Street residents, in particular, who now have little or no vegetation between their homes and the busy highway.

A letter from the residents was sent to Main Roads on Wednesday demanding the clearing stop immediately and that the area be remediated with mature trees to replace what was lost.

Resident Carly Starr said the trees had provided a vital buffer for Walkamin residents living adjacent to the highway.

“They blocked out the western sun, traffic noise and lights from the highway, and dust and chemicals from adjacent farms,” she said.

“There was no consultation with the community on this whatsoever, until an email was quickly sent off the day after clearing once they already decimated many trees.”

Labelling the tree clearing as “environmental vandalism”, Dr Starr said residents could not understand why Main Roads had not targeted the opposite side of the highway.

“Given the road is cleared on the other side, and the reduction of 80km/hr through town there was no need for this to occur,” she said.

Fellow resident Sharon Prior, whose house is totally exposed to the highway now, agreed.

“There is no privacy and the trees and shrubs provided a barrier for noise and lights from traffic at night, particularly the trucks.

widen the road or are they putting in a turning lane? We don’t even know that,” she said.

Dr Starr is also concerned about the impacts of the tree clearing on native species.

“These old eucalypts provided habitat for native species, many were old and hollow bearing so resident possums and birds were seen to use them for many years for breeding and food,” she said.

Residents also claim the tree clearing has the potential to devalue their properties.

“This has likely devalued our property value. We now are left with traffic lights blaring into our houses all through the night and associated noise,” Dr Starr said.

“The houses on this street are old Tinaroo cabins, with main bedrooms at the front of the houses facing the highway.

“We now all face the issue of significant noise and dust pollution as a result of these works, and certainly an impact on our ability

to sell. In a matter of days, the value of our houses has decreased.“ A Main Roads spokesperson confirmed that since residents raised objections to the clearing, the department was now “reviewing options to minimise the effects of vegetation removal”.

“We conducted environmental assessments and all relevant permits and approvals were obtained before removing the vegetation,” he said.

The department would continue to consult with the local community as the project progresses but he rejected any suggestion the opposite side of the highway could have been used to provide the room to upgrade the intersections.

“Widening of the road only on the western side at this location would have required significant realignment of the existing road and intersections, including the relocation of powerlines,” he said.

Deluge lifts rainfall totals HEAVY rainfall has lifted the monthly totals, with Mareeba receiving 276.4mm of rain for the month of January and Walkamin recording 332mm.

Most of Mareeba’s rain fell last week, with 150 mm recorded over four days, causing roads to be inundated and the Barron River to lap the John Doyle Bridge on Saturday.

Walkamin also received its most rain for the month last week, with 200mm falling over the four days – 100mm on Saturday alone.

Authorities continue to urge motorists to take care of the roads and not to drive through flood waters, but there were several cases of cars being caught in floodwaters across the northern Tablelands.

Police say motorists should never drive through floodwaters and remember if it’s flooded, forget it.

More heavy rain is excepted across the region later this week.

New supermarket on horizon for Mareeba

A THIRD supermarket is on the way for Mareeba, with a new shopping complex set to be constructed on the corner of Rankin and Byrnes Streets.

The site, which is across the road from the Mareeba Centre and the Coles supermarket, has been purchased by Sphere Group Development which plans to construct a new shopping complex by the end of 2023.

Sphere Group Development director Greg Ritchie has ties to Mareeba, having lived in the town before and been involved in multiple residential developments but this is his first commercial project.

“I have a love for the town and a love for the people, I want to see Mareeba grow - we can take the dream to a finished product,” he said.

Whilst the idea for a new shopping centre has been floating around for over five years, in October 2021, Sphere Group Development reached an agreement and was able to start planning their newest venture.

The company has extensive experience in developing shopping centres, with similar projects in Victoria where it are based.

The next step in the Mareeba project is to put together a document package to support a development application to Mareeba Shire Council.

“We’ve been working closely with council and they are excited to get this project moving,” Mr Ritchie said.

“This centre is needed and right now everyone has their foot on the accelerator.”

During the construction period, 120 direct and indirect jobs will be created, with 180 ongoing jobs when the centre becomes operational,

Approximately 3500sqm of the 4500sqm centre will be taken up by Woolworths, while the remaining 1000sqm will be allocated to other stores such as pharmacies, bakeries and the like.

“We have a commitment from Woolworths and BWS to occupy the new centre which will ultimately include 4500sqm (approx.) of retail floor space,” project manager Kris Wilson said.

“This will provide for a full-sized Woolworths Supermarket, a BWS and specialty retail.

“The planned covered carpark for the new centre will also be easily visible and easily navigable.”

A development application is expected to be lodged to MSC in the near future with plans to have the first shovel in the dirt by late 2022 and the centre to be operational in late 2023.

Local Covid stats THE number of reported Covid cases continues to rise on the Tablelands, with Mareeba Shire now surpassing 1200 cases since the Omicron variant emerged.

As of Monday morning, Queensland Health figures show there have been 1202 cases reported in the Mareeba Shire; Tablelands Regional Council area had 840; Cassowary Coast - 1294; Douglas Shire - 992; Cairns – 13,506; and Cook - 238.

Vaccination rates also continue to increase, with Mareeba Shire now at 80.2 per cent double dosed, while the Tablelands Regional Council area sits at 88.2 per cent.

The mandate, which prevents unvaccinated people from entering cafes, cinemas, festivals and sporting arenas, remains in place although Member for Hill Shane Knuth wants an end to the mandate which he says is causing massive issues in businesses having enough staff to open their doors.

“There are many other countries that are effectively dealing with Covid without enforcing mandates onto their people and English Prime Minister Boris Johnston has successfully taken these steps,” Mr Knuth said.

Tragic start to new year TWO more accidents have claimed the lives of Tablelands residents in the past two weeks, bringing the number of fatalities in the region to five since the start of the year.

Last week, 14-year-old Irvinebank local Andrew Beazley was killed when a motorcycle he was riding and a truck collided on the Herberton-Petford Road on 25 January.

On 16 January, well-known Mareeba real estate agent Michael Piagno died in a farming accident, and on the same day, 20-year-old Luke McDonald was found deceased after he fell at Emerald Creek Falls, and 53-year-old Sean McMahon died in a single vehicle crash at Tinaroo.

Earlier in the month, Mareeba man Jeff Ali died at Chillagoe in a workplace incident which is being investigated.

The completed multi-million dollar efficiency project to enhance water delivery to growers on the Tablelands is predicted to generate about $20 million a year in increased agricultural production.

Water saving project sets up future farming growth

A $32.54 million efficiency project to enhance water delivery to more than 17,000 hectares of Tablelands farmland has been completed, with projections it will generate around $20 million a year in increased agricultural production and save more than 8300 megalitres of water.

The Mareeba-Dimbulah Efficiency Improvement Project, undertaken by Sunwater, was jointly funded – with the Australian Government contributing $11.6 million through the National Water Grid Fund and the Queensland Government contributing $20.94 million.

With construction now complete, a process to validate the water savings is underway and once confirmed, new water allocations will be made available for sale.

infrastructure so that more of the precious resource will go to growers in the Atherton Tablelands.

“This project will increase access to reliable water across the region and deliver a major boost to local growers, generating around $20 million per year in increased agricultural production,” Mr Joyce said.

“Securing water access is game-changing for our farmers and their communities, as it creates jobs, wealth and a stronger agricultural sector.

“That is why the Australian Government is investing $3.5 billion in projects just like this under our 10-year rolling plan for vital water infrastructure across the country, providing a long-term strategy to build the dams, weirs and pipelines that our agricultural and regional communities need and deserve.”

Senator for Queensland and Special Envoy for Northern Australia Susan McDonald said the project replaced and installed 14 kilometres of pipeline, installed 125 automated control gates in irrigation channels, and upgraded 157 water offtakes.

“This forms part of the Australian Government’s unwavering commitment to secure Aus-

tralia’s water future – including in North and Far North Queensland.

“We have already committed nearly $500 million to water infrastructure projects in North and Far North Queensland that will not only increase water security in established agricultural areas but also unlock agricultural opportunities in new regions, backing our economy, exports and job creation.”

Queensland Water Minister Glenn Butcher said the project would save up to 8,306 megalitres of high-value water through new modernised infrastructure, which would reduce losses and improve service reliability to growers.

“As Queensland’s Minister for Water, I am thrilled to see this project finalised and even happier the construction component of these water-saving works provided jobs for 18 Queenslanders,” Minister Butcher said.

“Queensland’s vital agricultural sector stands to benefit, as growers will be able to better service a variety of crops, including sugar cane, bananas, mangoes, avocados, coffee, tea trees and vegetables.

“Thanks to this project, $20 million of which was funded by this Queensland Government,

water will now be delivered to the region based on demand, which we know will improve reliability and maximise the amount available to growers.”

State Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the infrastructure was critical in securing the future for growers in the electorate.

“I understand the importance of water security for our region and the Mareeba-Dimbulah Efficiency Improvement Project will give growers confidence that they will receive reliable water supply and improved service delivery,” Ms Lui said.

The broader efficiency project highlights Sunwater’s ability to carry out complex modernisation projects that have tangible outcomes for customers.

The new automated channel gates measure and regulate water flow, which will subsequently improve the supply scheme’s ability to meet grower demand, as well as make more water available.

The Australian Government’s funding is being provided through the National Water Grid Fund, which is paving the way to national water security, while promoting economic activity and job creation.

We're on the road to nowhere New road not needed for 30 years, says access report

BY ROBYN HOLMES THE Kuranda Range Road will remain as the key transport link between the northern Tablelands and Cairns after a long-awaited government strategy concluded there was no need to provide an alternative road until at least 2051.

According to the State Government’s $1.6 million Cairns to Northern Tablelands Access Strategy, the Kuranda Range Road has the capacity to manage traffic for the next three decades, but it does acknowledge another transport link will be required and that investigations will be needed to identify the best route.

But Minister for Main Roads Mark Bailey said any investigations into major upgrades or new routes were not immediately warranted.

“What this study tells us is there is currently no clear technical justification for a major upgrade of existing routes, or construction of a new road along a new alignment,” he said.

“There is no need for the deceptively named ‘bridle track’ that is in fact a proposed new highway which would plough through National Park between Cairns and Mareeba – destroying unique ecology in the Dindin National Park in the process.

“With 12 kilometres of proposed tunnelling involved in this track, it would be a multi-billion dollar project without any need or justification that would destroy an estimated 140 to 160 hectares of rainforest, resulting in the loss of approximately 80,000 to 100,000 mature trees.

“This proposed highway is a project no government would ever build due to its hideous cost and destruction of a heritage listed national park.

“Based on real data to come from this study, our main planning priority remains identifying a long-term plan for the bridge over Barron River near Kuranda.”

said the strategy had delivered a roadmap of initiatives and investment over the short, medium and long term to deliver the “right infrastructure when and where it is needed most”.

“Our research found that 93 per cent of trips on Kuranda Range Road, are within two minutes of the expected travel time, which is 12 minutes from top of the range to Smithfield.

“While there are clear challenges, this demonstrates that the existing road is not operating at its capacity.”

Mr Crawford said the strategy set out the next steps for a long-term alternative route, once capacity of existing roads was reached.

“The main challenges identified in the planning study relate to network resilience, travel reliability and freight access,” he said.

“The access strategy provides 59 recommendations to respond to these challenges, which include safety and resilience upgrades aiming to reduce the frequency and duration of closures due to severe weather events and crashes.

One of these recommendations was the installation of an Intelligent Transport System, which commenced in August last year.

“This system will allow our teams to communicate real time travel information with drivers and improve reliability along the range,” Mr Bailey said.

“The technology also facilitates variable speed limit signs, which are proven to reduce the number of rear-end casualty crashes and will integrate with new technology in the future.

“For instance, with the technology on wet, foggy days, the speed may be reduced to minimise the risk of crashes which then hold up all traffic for hours while it is being responded to and then cleared.”

Meanwhile, Mr Bailey said a $2.1 million project to undertake planning for the Barron River Bridge had commenced.

Leaders slam road report COMMUNITY leaders have hit out at the Northern Tablelands Access Study, describing it as disappointing and that it had fallen short of addressing the transport needs of the region which will ultimately constrain its growth for the next 30 years.

Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said the current routes from the Tablelands to the coast could not meet the transport needs generated by regional inland growth, particularly that of the Mareeba Shire, which was outstripping forecasts.

“This growth is expected to continue due to the Tablelands' agricultural and industrial capacity compared with constrained coastal locations,” she said.

“Efficient access is needed for higher mass limit vehicles between the northern Tablelands and Cairns to reduce transport costs of freighting goods to and from Far North Queensland, including the Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape York Peninsula.

“It is a great shame that this long-awaited

study has fallen short in addressing these issues. Mareeba Shire Council cannot accept that there is not an issue with the capacity of this road.”

Far Northern Regional Organisation of Councils Chair Michael Kerr called the strategy and its recommended short-term actions “just further delay tactics to the commencement of finding a solution”.

“Our economic growth will continue to be stifled to allow the State to focus its attention, strategic planning and investment into South-East Queensland,” he said.

“SEQ communities would never accept a road closure on average of one day per week for 6.6 hours, why should we? The State Government would never allow this to be acceptable down there, so why is it acceptable here?

“There’s a whole lot of ‘investigate’ this and ‘develop’ that which is political spin used to make it seem like they are doing something when they are not.

“I’m astounded by the amount of taxpayer money spent on band aid actions and ‘delay’ strategies which does absolutely nothing to unclog the artery supporting our economic growth.”

Member for Kennedy Bob Katter agrees, saying the report shows the State Government wants to “strangle the economy” of Far North Queensland until at least 2050.

“We are in a situation where the State Government doesn’t know if the Kuranda Bridge is or isn’t safe.

“And even when the bridge is open, that route closes 44 times a year for an average of seven hours per closure (according to its own report),” he said.

“Despite this, they tell us that a new road from Cairns to the Tablelands isn’t viable, but they are spending $6b on the Cross River Rail to save Brisbane commuters five minutes, and are also spending billions on the Olympic Games in Brisbane, a sporting contest that will last two weeks.”

JUST 14 weeks after opening back to two lanes of traffic, the Barron River bridge has again reverted to one lane to allow engineers to check on whether repairs are performing well.

Testing began on the repairs on Monday, forcing traffic back to one lane but Member for Barron Craig Crawford says it will only be necessary for the next six weeks.

Mr Crawford said the regular monitoring and testing program would involve crews inspecting about 1000 locations with an under-bridge inspection unit.

“We recently reopened both lanes over the Barron River bridge after successful investigations and repairs and this followed extensive investigation and repairs on the heritage-listed bridge,” he said.

“What we’ll now be checking is that the bridge is continuing to perform as expected under two lanes of traffic.”

Mr Crawford said testing was scheduled to begin on Monday, with the bridge to be one lane from 9am until 4pm Monday to Friday until early March.

“The department has also started a planning study to investigate long-term solutions for the Barron River bridge,” he said.

“This $2.1 million planning project will confirm the preferred alignment and scope of a replacement bridge over the Barron River, including a viable delivery strategy that also considers the ongoing management and rehabilitation of the existing one.”

Caught on camera A 44-YEAR-old man has been charged after police intercepted him allegedly driving at 200km/h on the Mulligan Highway.

Police intercepted the Cooktown man on the Mulligan Highway, about 5km south of Mount Carbine, at about 1pm on Monday, 24 January.

Police allegedly clocked the vehicle doing 200km/h in a 100km/h zone at the time of the intercept.

A roadside breath test was conducted, which resulted in the man being transported to Mareeba Police Station for further testing.

It will be alleged that the man returned a reading of 0.104 per cent BAC. He was charged with drink driving and will appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on 28 February.

The man was also issued with a traffic infringement notice for high end speeding of more than 40km/h over the limit and fined $1,245.

The infringement notice incurred eight demerit points and a six-month high-speed suspension.

Tablelands Patrol Group Acting Inspector Rob Campbell said travelling at extremely high speeds could have devastating consequences.

“Those consequences impact not just the victim but also families, friends and emergency service workers who attend these tragic scenes,” he said.

“We ask that everyone remembers the Fatal Five and continues to make the right decisions on our roads to assist the community reduce the effects of road trauma.”

FAR Northern police respond to many offences including stealing from vehicles, theft of vehicles, entry to homes and theft of property from around the yard or under the house.

Tablelands Police are encouraging residents to be vigilant with their home security, ensuring security screens and doors are locked and secured.

Placing valuables such as mobile phones, watches, and car keys out of sight, can assist with home security.

A perimeter check before going to bed can ensure that an unlocked vehicle is secured, or a back door is locked, which will assist in reducing your chances of becoming a victim of crime.

With 97 vehicles stolen since January 1 across the Far Northern District, police are asking residents to secure their vehicles when unattended and keep keys out of sight.

We need to work together and that means the community being the eyes and ears of police and reporting suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood to Policelink on 13 14 44.

An alternate way of helping not only yourself but your neighbourhood, is by registering your CCTV cameras with police.

The Community Camera Alliance The Community Camera Alliance is a community safety initiative which launched in the Far North in late 2021.

The initiative gives residents and business owners the opportunity to register their closedcircuit television (CCTV) cameras, allowing police to contact owners of cameras in a particular area where an investigation is being conducted.

CCTV has become a crucial investigative tool in modern policing. CCTV footage holdings are regularly used to investigate and solve often serious crimes and are invaluable when used as evidence. It provides an unquestionable account of the identity and actions of offenders. CCTV images can potentially reduce investigation times, resulting in swifter outcomes.

Historically, investigators have benefited from CCTV systems in business or commercial premises. Recent advancements in technology, affordability and accessibility have resulted in more people choosing to utilise CCTV at their homes for safety and security.

Knowing the location of established CCTV systems within the community will maximise the efficiency of investigative resources and minimise the loss of potential evidence. Locating cameras can be time-consuming and resource-intensive but it is crucial, particularly in serious investigations.

How will my CCTV system be registered?

Residents who choose to be part of the Community Camera

Alliance program, can register a CCTV camera by completing a Community Camera Alliance registration form, which can be found at your local police station. Your voluntary registration will be stored in an existing secure database named QPRIME which is utilised and solely accessed by members of the QPS. Your registration advises police where a CCTV system is located. If police believe that your system can assist to solve a crime or help in any other way, you will be contacted and asked to help.

What information do I need to provide to register?

If you have a CCTV system at your home that you would like to register, we require your full name (as it appears on your driver’s licence), your current residential address, your contact details and some details regarding your CCTV system.

If you have a CCTV system at your business premises that you would like to register, we require the full trading name of the business, the physical address of the business, the contact details for the owner and operator of the CCTV system and some details regarding the CCTV system.

The new road forward

A GROUP of passionate locals has been quietly working hard behind the scenes to shore up what they believe is the best viable alternative route to link the northern Tablelands to Cairns.

Dubbed the Reddicliffe Highway, the new alternative route would completely negate the need for daily commuters and freight vehicles to use the Kuranda Range Road, and would only take under half an hour to reach Cairns from Mareeba.

Reddicliffe Highway Steering Committee member Ken Harley is confident the route is not only financially viable but also environmentally friendly and would enable the region to reap major economic benefits as outlined in a report from respected economist Bill Cummings.

He said unfortunately a lot of people were confused about what the Reddicliffe Highway was and, more importantly, that it was a completely different proposal than the Bridle Track being promoted by Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and Member for Hill Shane Knuth.

“Please understand that the people working hard on the Reddicliffe Highway proposal are in no way connected to Katter or Knuth or the KAP and their Bridle Track proposal,” Mr Harley said.

“The science and the information that was presented to the people of Mareeba last year at the racecourse is the science that is connected to the Reddicliffe Highway.”

Mr Harley said the issue of an alternative route to Cairns had unfortunately become politicised but his group were focussed on fleshing out the details of their proposal and getting that in front of appropriate authorities.

“This road is beyond politics – it is about safety and the future economy,” he said.

Reddicliffe himself, along with over 30 supporters and backers from differing backgrounds including environmental experts, economic professionals and engineers.

The proposed highway is the brainchild of Mr Reddicliffe who first designed the alternative route in the 1960s at the behest of former Queensland Minister Martin Tenni and former Mareeba Mayor Mick Borzi.

Due to his knowledge of the area and his skill in road building, Mr Tenni asked Mr Reddicliffe to design a road to better connect Mareeba to Cairns.

“In the 60s, Martin Tenni and Mick Borzi both knew that the Kuranda Range wasn’t going to cut the cake in the future,” Mr Harley said.

“Martin Tenni used to look at the roads that Ron would build for his

Mr Reddicliffe then started developing the plans for the new route, including options for rail lines, new water sources and even the possibility to connect the road further towards Biboohra in the future.

To date, the steering committee has developed a plan and commissioned Mr Cummings to prepare an economic impact and justification analysis of the Kuranda Range Road compared to the proposed Reddicliffe Highway.

The analysis indicated that savings in travel time and vehicle costs would deliver upwards of $1 billion dollars per year if a more direct route to Cairns was established.

To that end, they have already met with Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch and have scheduled an upcoming meeting with Member for Barron River Craig Crawford this month.

Mr Crawford released the results of the $1.6m study looking into alternative routes late last week.

According to the study, there will be no need to construct another route from the Northern Tablelands to Cairns until at least 2051, however the study did conclude that investigations into what the best route would be should be undertaken in the meantime.

The proposed highway is a four-lane motorway beginning just past the Davies Creek Bridge, cutting east to Cairns and joining up with the Cairns Western Arterial Road.

The highway would be 18-23.5km, with travel time estimated to be 21 minutes for a car and 27 for a truck if starting from the Mareeba Heritage Centre.

The road would pass over the Redlynch Intake Road with options for an on and off ramp, before joining with the Cairns Western Arterial Road.

The highway would not require any tunnels and would run along the natural contours of the mountains, keeping the same elevation of the Kuranda Range, around 400m above sea level.

Citizens humbled by awards A “QUIET achiever” was how Mareeba Shire Council’s 2022 Citizen of the Year, Norma Moloney, was described at the shire’s annual Australia Day Awards ceremony.

Ms Moloney was one of 12 winners recognised at the presentation event held at the Mareeba International Club.

Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin told the gathering the Covid pandemic had been challenging over the past two years but the community had weathered the storm.

“The everchanging landscape in which we live continues to challenge us all and it will take some time for the ‘new normal’ to unfold. Nonetheless there remains an overwhelming sense of community spirit, resilience, compassion and generosity that continues to shine through,” Cr Toppin said.

“If there is a positive to take away from this enduring pandemic, it is most certainly

the level of volunteering that continues to grow within our region. People taking care of friends and neighbours, community groups rallying together.”

Ms Moloney was a good example of how someone in the community could make a real difference, working tirelessly behind the scenes in a volunteer capacity.

After winning the award, Ms Moloney said she was shocked by the accolade.

“I did not expect to win, absolutely not, it came as quite a surprise in a big way,” she said.

“I don’t volunteer to get awards or recognition, I do it because I love it and I enjoy giving something back to the community.

“I am very surprised, humbled and proud that I was named.”

COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR Rotary FNQ Field Days Inc This biannual event has continued to grow over the past 30 years and is jointly run by the Atherton and Mareeba Rotary Clubs.

In 2021, it was one of the first COVIDsafe events to be held in Queensland and proved to be extremely successful with over 15,000 visitors attending.

The event attracted more than 400 exhibitors and the economic value to the region was significant. The economic benefit to the community is significant and enduring as it showcases the diverse businesses and industries that exist within the region.

Run by volunteers, this event raises funds which support the community, and is a highlight in the local social calendar, providing a great opportunity for members of the community to connect with each other.

Nicole Theakston, a recently graduated student of Mareeba State High School, was nominated for her outstanding academic, sporting, cultural and leadership achievements which culminated in a number of awards including the Physical Education Award, a School Service and Cultural Award, the Mareeba Leagues Club Community Involvement Award, and the Ampol Best All Rounder Award. Nicole is a member of the Mareeba Baptist Church Youth Group (since 2015), and has attended community events such as ANZAC Day, NAIDOC Family Days, Child Protection Week Family Fun Days and the Mareeba Multi-Cultural Festival.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Lee Gordon and Tammy Sivyer (pictured) Lee was recognised as an inspiring individual with strong community spirit, and for her dedication to volunteering in Chillagoe. She has been the President of the Chillagoe P&F for 18 months, Secretary of the Chillagoe Rodeo for 12 months, and an active member of the Chillagoe Alliance. If not for Lee’s involvement, the Chillagoe Festival in 2021 would not have gone ahead and proved to be one of the most successful to date.

Tammy is well known in Dimbulah for her involvement in numerous committees throughout the region including the Eureka Creek Rodeo Committee, P&C committee, and the Dimbulah Child Care Centre. She is the president of the Dimbulah Community Centre which hosted a special festive event, Christmas Under the Stars, in 2021.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Norma Moloney Norma has demonstrated years of commitment to the Crime Stopper Queensland Volunteer Area Committee, including being a founding member and treasurer.

Her fund-raising efforts assisted the group to secure funds to buy a much-needed vehicle and a purpose-built trailer to take the Crime Stoppers message to regional centres throughout the Cape and west into the gulf.

As one of only three volunteers who make up a committee of five for the Mt Emerald Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund, which has given $200,000 back to non-profit organisations, Norma initiated the Mt Emerald Wind Farm Community Walk which was a huge success with over 120 people attending the inaugural event, and 160 attending last year’s walk. Last year, she also established a volunteer database that now has around 45 names.

As Vice Chiefton (vice President) of the Atherton Tablelands Caledonian Society, Norma helped to secured two grants and organised a Scottish ceilidh (dinner/dance) to celebrate ‘The Year of Scotland in Australia’, with 200 people attending in July.

CULTURAL AWARD Historical Society of Mareeba The Historical Society of Mareeba endeavours to educate others about Mareeba Shire history.

In January 2021, the society began researching information and photographs pertaining to the disaster at Mt Mulligan coal mine to create a photographic display in recognition of 100 years since the disaster. In total, nearly 200 photographs were included in a display which was open to the general public.

ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD Wildlife & Raptor Care Queensland FOUNDED by Amber Dahlberg, this not-forprofit wildlife and rehabilitation organisation is based in Julatten. Supported by a group of dedicated volunteers. Their aim is to provide specialised care and rehabilitation to injured birds of prey.

The facility is the largest of its kind in Far North Queensland and its inception means that local wildlife can be rehabilitated and then released in their natural areas, rather than being sent to carers down south.

This organisation plays an important role in providing specialist care to wildlife as well as building community spirit through volunteerism in Julatten.

SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR Leonard Hodges (pictured left) Leonard has played a big part in the Mareeba Cricket Club, and he is acknowledged for being a volunteer coach in Mareeba and Dimbulah.

Leonard runs the very successful Blast Programs, which has resulted in a growing number of junior players developing their skills.

He helps coach the junior teams, coaches the 4th Grade team, runs fitness sessions for all junior and senior teams and, in his spare time, he also plays and is a valuable member of the team.

Leonard has been selected to coach a Tableland District Cricket School team in 2022 and coaches the girls and boys school teams for Mareeba State High School, where he works as a teacher.

SPORTS ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR Irene Roy (pictured centre) IRENE is the President of the Mareeba Cricket Club and has dedicated many years of service, fundraising, seeking sponsorship and applying for grants to ensure the continued success of the club.

During the season, Irene is often found in the canteen, keeping score during the matches or transporting players to different venues. Nothing is too much trouble for this dedicated volunteer and she is well respected by all members of the club.

JUNIOR SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR Angus Campman (pictured right) ANGUS is a talented young man who demonstrates incredible sportsmanship and resilience in his endeavours and achievements in both cricket and touch football.

His list of achievements include representing Cairns Far North Cricket at the State Level over a number of years; being awarded Mareeba Cricketer of the Year, best batsman and bowler over consecutive years; winning the Cairns Far North Jimmy Maher Cup Player of the Year and Batting Award; and representing Peninsula for Cricket and touch football on a number of occasions. In addition to this, Angus is actively involved in coaching and umpiring the junior teams and is considered a positive role model for all players.

A MAN who has shown his commitment to veterans, military history, military and commemorative events, fundraising, charitable voluntary services, and agriculture research and development is the Tablelands Regional Council’s 2022 Citizen of the Year.

John Hardy OAM has contributed over and above normal employment duties to the Tablelands community for over 40 years, volunteering for many organisations. His 45 years at the Department of Primary Industry research station contributed significantly to the primary producers of the Atherton Tablelands.

Mr Hardy was among nine award winners at council’s annual Australia Day Awards, presented by Mayor Rod Marti.

“It was a great day to recognise these amazing people and organisations in our

community, and remind ourselves why the Tablelands region is such a great place to live, work and play,” he told the audience.

“We celebrate the nominees here today who have demonstrated the qualities of the Aussie spirit we know and love. They have contributed to our community as volunteers and enriched our lives with their involvement and successes in sports, arts, industry and innovation.”

After winning the award, Mr Hardy said he was honoured by the accolade and took the time during his acceptance speech to urge others in the community to nominate worthy people for awards.

“There are people out there doing great things and we should remember to nominate them for awards like this. Someone put my name forward for an OAM and I would urge

“It was good to know the community values the work you do and it encourages you to keep doing those types of things,” she said.

“I hope it encourages others to do the same and that by winning this award, I am a role model for other young people.”

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD John Compton John has spent countless hours as the coordinator of the Yungaburra Lions Medical Equipment Loan Project, which loans medical equipment to the community. John transports, delivers, sanitises and maintains the equipment and does it all with a smile.

His work is very time consuming but John never complains and believes it is an important services the community needs.

JUNIOR CULTURAL AWARD Aladdin (Malanda Youth Theatre) Forty-four young people aged 9–17 and 30 backstage adults rehearsed twice a week for five months before Aladdin hit the stage in June. The Malanda Youth Theatre production played to 1300 people in sold out shows, including two special daytime performances for primary schools. The children and adults put in a mammoth effort and worked together each week to bring a top quality show to the community and indulge their love of live performance.

The children gained experience in public speaking and stage presence, and increased their confidence. They also learnt the importance of volunteering.

INCLUSION AWARD Tableland Community Link Tableland Community Link (TCL) has supported people with disabilities and mental illness for 27 years and are constantly looking at ways to be more inclusive. They run an activity centre called “The Grove” where clients are involved in activities and fundraising including raffles, trivia nights, sausage sizzles, movie nights, cake stalls and containers for change. They create opportunities for people with disability to be involved in their community including horse-riding, lawn bowls, tenpin bowling, bingo, Zumba, walking hockey and a colour run/roll-a-thon.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR John Hardy OAM John Hardy is one of those community members who make a real difference, and his contributions span across more than four decades.

He has been very active in the community through membership and support of numerous veteran and community organisations including the Great Wheelbarrow Race, Tolga Lions Club, Atherton Maize Festival, the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park, and the Afghanistan Avenue of Honour.

Mr Hardy has a passion for military history, serving on the state management committee of the National Servicemen's Association of Australia (Qld), editing the group’s newsletter, and is a member of the Tablelands branch.

He is also documenting all memorials throughout the State that honour national servicemen, almost 50 so far.

YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Tahnee Dilger Tahnee is a serving member of the Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade, assisting with hazard reduction burns across the Atherton Tablelands and cooking, serving and cleaning for the annual Christmas Toy Run. Tahnee has been a member of the Tablelands Brass Band since 2020, performing at a variety of community events. She is an outstanding asset to any cause she lends her support to. Tahnee will certainly pursue a life-path that will positively impact others.

This will ensure they are provided for if anything happens to their parents. For those with young children, a Will is crucial because it appoints their guardian.

Buying a home or a change in assets Property is usually the biggest asset that most people have, so when you buy a home, it’s strongly advised that you update your Will.

You should note that your Will can only control assets that are in your name, so if you own a property as joint-proprietors with your spouse, it will transfer to them if you die.

If you have a significant change in assets, for example you come into some large sums of money, or you start a business, you should make sure these changes are reflected in a Will.

When you retire You’ve worked hard and now it’s time to enjoy your retirement.

But make sure you have all your legal and financial matters up to date.

In addition to a Will, you may also want to consider preparing a power of attorney or advance health directive.

If you become ill While it’s generally not a good idea to make a Will when you are unwell, a health scare is often one of the major motivators for writing or updating a Will.

FIVE-year-old Roman Prizmic is just one of thousands of children who is excited at the prospect of going to school for the very first time next Monday.

The school year was delayed by two weeks due to the Omicron variant spreading through communities across the region, with only kids of essential workers being present on school grounds.

A very excited Roman will join his many peers from kindy at Mareeba State School, with mum Stefanie Prizmic just as excited as him for his first day.

“It’s a mixed bag of emotions, I feel proud, excited and sad but I am grateful that he is going with a great group of mates, and he has a wonderful teacher,” she said.

“I want him to have fun and enjoy learning and to learn how to be kind and respectful while at school.

“When we found out that there would be a delay to the start of school, he was a bit sad we had to add more days to the countdown – he is just so excited to go to prep.”

Since finishing kindy last year, Roman has been eagerly counting down the

days for his very first day of “big school”.

Stefanie said Roman asks every day to put his uniform on and wear it around the house all day because he loves it so much.

Roman said he was mostly excited to see all his friends coming with him from kindy and can’t wait to learn.

“I’m excited because I have never gone there (school) before,” Roman said.

“I can’t wait to see (my friends from kindy) Hudson, Jackson, Daniel and Gia and to play on the playground there.”

“I’m going to do some math and some reading with my teacher Ms Collis.”

A WHOPPING 2.068kg last minute Kensington Pride Mango has taken out the gold this year for The Express Newspaper’s KP Mango Competition.

Andrew Gould dropped into The Express office on Friday afternoon with the gigantic fruit, leaving the staff in shock.

KABAN GREEN POWER HUB Notice of delivery of Wind Turbines The Kaban Green Power Hub is a 157MW renewable energy project near Ravenshoe in the Atherton Tablelands, 80 kilometres south-west of Cairns.

Delivery Information of the Kaban Green Power Hub wind turbines Delivery of the Kaban Green Power Hub wind turbines is due to commence in early February 2022 and continue for a period of approximately 6 months. Weather and transport conditions permitting, deliveries will occur up to 6 days per week (Monday to Saturday). Each delivery will commence from Cairns at 3:45am (AEST) and is scheduled to pass through Ravenshoe between 8:00am and 11:30am (AEST).

The wind turbines will be transported by truck from Cairns, south along the Bruce Highway, turning at the Palmerston Highway to Millaa Millaa, the Kennedy Highway, through Ravenshoe to Tumoulin, then on to site.

The Kaban Green Power Hub has an approved Transport Management Plan to deliver the wind turbines to the site. All component deliveries will be under escort by Queensland Police traffic pilots.

Further to the recent direction by Queensland police, if you see a pilot or police escort vehicle approach you, you should slow down immediately and safely pull over to the side of the road to allow the deliveries to pass.

Oversized loads will always use UHF Channel 40.

If you find yourself behind an oversized load, please do not pass until a pilot or police escort has given you an instruction to do so. Motorists should not try to overtake the loads without this indication from the pilot or escort.

The transport delivery sizes will be up to 91 metres in length, 5.0 metres in width, and 77 tonnes.

A Statement by Mareeba Shire Council to clarify the changes at the Waste Transfer Stations In November 2021 the last cell at the Mareeba Landfill was completely filled and is now being capped.

Council now must pay to transport the waste delivered to the Transfer Stations to the Springmount Landfill and then pay for its disposal there.

Because Council has to pay the extra cost of transporting and disposing of the waste, the one free load of 100kg a month can no longer be offered.

The cost per tonne to dispose of domestic waste at the Transfer Station has not changed, it remains at $90/tonne and a trailer load at $16.50.

Yungaburra Landcare Group have welcomed a new mower, courtesy of the North Queensland Wildlife Trust, that will help the team maintain the surrounding areas and walking tracks.

The only change is the loss of the option for a once a month free trailer load.

YUNGABURRA Landcare Group received a brand new $5,000 ride-on mower last week, all thanks to the North Queensland Wildlife Trust.

The Trust was established 20 years ago by Angela and Peter Freeman who established Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure, Kuranda Koala Gardens and Bird World Kuranda.

Ms Freeman said the funds had mostly come from donations given to their tourist venues.

“Peter, myself and our North Queensland Wildlife Trust have had a long-standing relationship with the Yungaburra Landcare and have been supporting their great work for many years,” she said.

“This time they were in urgent need of a new ride-on mower for the maintenance of the beautiful nature trail that they have created along Petersons Creek, and we were only too happy to step up and assist.

Dimbulah paramedic celebrates 30 years of service to the job

BY ELLIE FINK IF you have needed urgent medical care in the last 30 years, you may have encountered the gentle care of Charles Khan.

Working in Dimbulah and the surrounding communities as a senior advanced care paramedic since 1996, Charles has tended to thousands of patients from as far west as Chillagoe and south to Walkamin.

Starting his career in the Queensland Ambulance Service as an honorary ambulance officer in 1992, Charles was able to take advantage of first aid training, allowing him to render initial first aid at the scene of a medical emergency.

“As an honorary officer, I tried to gain as much experience as possible and Dimbulah at that time wasn’t busy enough to give me more exposure (to different medical emergencies) and give me the chance to use the skills I was taught,” he said.

“I trained in Dimbulah and then would come to Mareeba to do honorary shifts and that gave me stepping stones, obtaining a full-time role at the Mareeba Station when one became available in 1994.”

Charles decided he wanted to take the next step up in the medical field to an advanced care paramedic, upgrading his duties, responsibility and knowledge.

Always challenging, working as an ambulance officer exposed Charles to many eye-opening experiences that have stayed with him over the years and brought home how important staying connected with family and friends is.

“I think the sad things always stick with you the most and the trauma from them and something that always comes to mind would probably be in my first couple of years of working,” he said.

“I attended an elderly couple and one of them were unwell and had to go to hospital, so I was chatting with the other partner, and she expressed her concern that they were ready to go.

“I said, ‘what do you mean?’ and she told me that all of her family had grown up and passed on, all her friends

from their generation had passed on and they have nobody, and they are ready to go.

“I thought that was quite sad and it has always stuck with me since and really drills in the importance of connecting with your friends and family and making sure people around you aren’t feeling alone.”

Through good and bad, Charlie remains motivated to continue helping the people around him get better and healthier sooner.

“The fact that I can make a difference motivates me in some way shape or form, if not to fix people’s illnesses but to make them feel a little bit better,” he said.

“I can make them more comfortable and get them to hospital where they are in position to feel a whole lot better.”

Charles said not much had really changed on his job over the past three decades, just the colour of the ambulance, colour of the uniforms and the colour of his hair.

After his almost 30 years of serving the region, Charles said he would continue his duties as a senior are paramedic, with another few years left.

“Giving my age and the fact that I have been doing it for nearly 30 years, I am a few years away from retirement,” he said.

“I think maybe a couple more years, I want to get out and do things while I am still young enough to do it.”

Potato grower poised to become leader in cotton

FOURTH generation potato grower, 36-year-old Brad Jonsson of Ravenshoe, has been selected to participate in an Australian cotton industry premier, entry-level, leadership program.

The Future Cotton Leaders Program aims to take 15 of the country's most outstanding young cotton stakeholders and develop their leadership knowledge, skills and experience.

Concluding at the annual cotton conference in August, the program will feature faceto-face forums, interactive online discussions, one on one coaching and involvement with industry activities.

Each participant will undertake an individual project of their choice during the next 7 months and Mr Jonsson said he was looking forward to investigating how carbon farming might fit with their operation.

Encouraged by Cotton Australia to apply, Mr Jonsson believes the networking opportunities on offer could be a game-changer for his family business.

“I am keen to gain as much knowledge as possible and picking up just 1 or 2 valuable ideas can make a huge difference,” he said.

Brad, his wife Natasha and their children Sophie 15, Jack, 12, Harrison 10 and Callum, 9, are based at their family's home farm outside Ravenshoe with parents Warren and Gail.

The family have grown potatoes and avocadoes there for decades before more recently acquiring “Wombinoo”, a 25,00 0ha cattle property on the Herbert River, 45km south east of Mt Garnet.

Run by Dean and Emmalee Jonsson and their staff, Wombinoo is home to around 4000 black Angus/Brahman cross breeders plus progeny, many of whom will eventually pass through the on-property feedlot, spending 100-150 days on corn grown and harvested on the property.

In a departure from tradition, the Jonsson family started looking at cotton as a crop option a few years ago. Against a backdrop of rising input costs and falling returns from potatoes, the Jonssons were looking for a new challenge.

“Potatoes built us and avocadoes are a big part of who we are, but we were always looking for opportunities to diversify. Potato returns just weren't stacking up and after looking at 50 or 60 trial crops at a Mareeba field day, my brother Dean and I headed to St Ronans to have a look at what was happening there,” Brad said.

“You didn't have to know much about growing cotton to recognise success when you saw it. About five minutes in, we could see the crop was performing well and decided farm-

“The timing was good as cotton was experiencing its best prices in 20 years and there was just a really good feeling about the industry. It has been enjoyable being part of an industry with such good people who have bent over backwards to help newcomers.

“Knowing the cotton price up front also takes a lot of the volatility out of farming. Potatoes, avocadoes and cattle prices are all decided on sale day.”

Brad said they were planning to expand on last year's plant of around 700ha of cotton, but had chosen instead to selectively replant only the best of the country this year, ensuring a high return on money invested.

“Our 1000ha crop target means we will be looking around for more country to lease in the near future. Cotton quantities in the far north should double this year, with quite a few new growers entering the industry,” Brad said.

“As the new industry grows,

we are hoping to see a greater Cotton Australia presence in the area. I have been pushing for a part time extension officer to be based on the Tablelands.

“It would be great to have someone on the ground here to support the work growers are doing trialling crop varieties and growing practices.

“We have been very lucky to have inspiring industry experts like Nick Gillingham and David Statham of Sundown Pastoral and Senior Agronomist with Nutrien Ag Solutions, Maurilio Rezende Silva Neto to help get us off the ground.

“Their advice to pre-buy this year's fertiliser through Nutrien in August last year has saved our operation a huge amount of money. But unless we step up to the plate and make a start, there will never be a cotton industry here.”

Brad said they had experienced a good steady start to the season and with a bit of luck, they could have their own cotton gin operating up here in the next few years.

MALANDA Theatre Company is thrilled to announce the group has been granted the rights to perform “Mamma Mia” and is currently seeking interest in actors and backstage crew across the Tablelands.

This is the second time the company has applied for the rights, being rejected the first time and having to wait for over half a year for the second opportunity.

Director Gill Harrington said it was a long and nervous wait to hear the results back from the agents, hoping they would finally get to put on the iconic musical for the Tablelands community.

“After much nail biting and sleepless nights, we were given the go ahead in January and swung into action immediately,” she said.

“Creating a Greek Taverna on the Majestic Stage is a big task, so using the opportunity created by the temporary closure of the cinema set, building has begun.

“Malanda Theatre Company relies on volunteers so the next thing that needs to happen is to put together a Production Team – people to help with backstage, sound, lighting, publicity and, of course, be part of the band are welcomed," Gill said.

Auditions are set to take place in May, with the first set of rehearsals to take place later in June.

Anyone from the age of 20 to 50 with acting, singing and dancing abilities are eligible to audition for lead roles, as well as a chorus of Greek villagers.

Epuron needs to respect real community input EPURON and its Chalumbin industrial Wind Farm subsidiary are at it yet again! For the third time now, this company is actively seeking to avoid proper community consultation at all costs.

First, we had their disgraceful 16 September, 2021, so-called “community information session”, where Epuron’s QLD development manager refused to even provide his name, let alone answer questions, nor acknowledge the concerns of the community. A meeting where Jirrbal Elders, the Traditional Custodians with direct links to the land under threat, were treated with utter disdain.

Next, we had the 4 December, 2021, Chalumbin Wind Farm community meeting, which despite Epuron having over two-and-a-half weeks’ notice, they failed to send a single representative to address the community and answer questions!

As if that wasn’t bad enough, now we find out (The Express 26/01/22) that Epuron will hold new “community information sessions” in two weeks’ time. This is to take place at the smallest possible venue, to exclude the maximum number of people from attending each session!

That’s right, they’ve elected to use 55 Grigg Street as their new “information hub” and wish to run multiple “smaller session”’ instead of a proper public meeting!

I wrote to Epuron (26 Jan) stating in part that I note Epuron has a history of attempting to avoid proper community consultation forums when seeking to develop in environmentally sensitive areas. Epuron has sought to do so, in a large part, by instead of meeting and engaging collectively with the community, by seeking one on one private meetings with individuals, or as in this case, small groups.

This is unconscionable conduct, and leaves the community with the burning question on why Epuron seeks to do so – what do you have to hide?

I submit to you that the announcement of holding small private “community information sessions” is completely inappropriate and violates due process. To attempt to skirt Epuron’s legal and social responsibilities by abusing the Queensland Government’s mandates is unconscionable.

I submit that Epuron must immediately announce the withdrawal of this plan, and instead hold an open and accountable outdoor community meeting where all concerned community members can attend.

This meeting must be held in Ravenshoe, with Epuron supplying a portable PA system to ensure all attendees can hear what is being said, and in turn individually and collectively have their voices heard.”

Epuron responded on 27 January declining to change their plans. I would urge Epuron to re-visit this decision.

Proliferation of wind farms to region's detriment WIND turbines destined for the previously vetoed Kaban wind farm are soon to be transported from Cairns Port to Kaban. The site of the Kaban Green Power Hub, a 28-wind turbine development, is located on the southern end of the Atherton Tablelands, near Ravenshoe, Far North Queensland.

Kaban is a high-biodiversity area home to threatened and vulnerable species Ghost Bats, Greater Gliders, Spectacled Flying Foxes and magnificent Broodfrogs as well as a wide variety of iconic wildlife including birdlife, bats, possums and reptiles.

Hundreds of acres of habitat have already been cleared for Kaban wind development. Once the turbines are installed, we will lose yet more wildlife. Raptors fly into wind turbines and bats lungs literally explode due to pressure shifts around the rotating blades.

Our wildlife do not understand wind turbines.

They have not evolved alongside wind turbines and they do not comprehend the speed at which the blades turn. ation (heat) as photons at 14.8 microns frequency (Planck’s Law).

Where's the value for us from council rates?

I AM in writing in regard to the new charge at the Irvinebank waste transfer station.

I have lived in Irvinebank all my life as for my family as well. In that time, I can remember dumps of rubbish everywhere over the place which were eventually cleaned up by mining companies that came through Irvinebank.

They also did most of the work on the main road that was supposed to be up-kept by council and also the council roads around were done by mining companies that Mareeba Shire took full advantage off.

In 1992, I brought my own home in Irvinebank and the rates were $40 for one half and $60 for the other half and you could take your own rubbish to a landfill dump anytime day or night and look after your own water.

Talk fests continue as crime hurts community AS one of a group of citizens attending the January 19 meeting of Mareeba Shire Council, I fully concur as “predictable” the apparent side stepping of the one major issue facing the whole Mareeba community - that of increasing levels of crime against people and property of residents.

On the subject of rising crime figures, almost every councillor exuded their verbal opinion regarding crime, each with a different slant on the many faceted issue.

The statements were so well presented and detailed and varied than any cynic could assume that they might have been assigned topics generated via a Council “crime workshop” held the day before.

Only Cr Mary Graham indicated support for the crime rally resolutions. But while I agree that local government literally has its hands tied to a point by State Government legislation which, rising crime figures confirm a tacit lack of positive results as a beacon of systemic failure at all levels.

Now just down the road we have Kaban, the proposed Chalumbin wind farm and the proposed High Road wind farm. If all projects go through, that’s at least 213 wind turbines located within a stone’s throw of each other on the Atherton Tablelands.

Environmental Impact Assessments are paid for by renewable energy developers. That’s like paying off your driving instructor to pass your driving test. This is a compromised process.

We don’t trust that they tell the full story of all the wildlife at risk. The statement in media releases about how it has gone through stringent approval process is nonsense.

Also, note that the Kaban wind turbines have been built in China. In December 2021, cracks were discovered in another shipment of turbines made in China bound for Stockyard Hill in Victoria’s central highlands.

Carolyn Emms President of Rainforest Reserves Australia on local crime of nearly two years ago has produced not one single measurable improvement.

The rising and worsening local crime figures confirm just that.

True, the Mareeba Shire Council has referred just one of the resolutions passed at the December 19 Mareeba Crime Rally to the Premier - i.e. the request to restrict the sale of cask wine etc. at licensed venues to after 4pm.

Also at the meeting, a number of anti-vaxxers from the Shire (representing 483 signatories) had loud and clear notice that their submission regarding Covid restrictions for anti-vaxxers would be submitted to the relevant State Government officials and the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk et al.

However, on the subject of crime in the community, the Mayor spent some time explaining how the council had spent time and effort etc. etc. on the concerns of rising crime numbers over a “considerable” time. But not once did she list one single success over almost two years of talk fests.

The Mayor also highlighted that the Tableland Youth Justice group would shortly be setting up an office in Mareeba, such are the “evident concerns” held by the MSC on rising crime figures in the community.

However, one thing puzzled me greatly.

With such MSC concern apparent in the room, why was it that a submission from anti-vaxxers gained council support via submission to the State Government, and yet the remainder of the resolutions passed at a 700 (considerably more) strong Mareeba Crime Rally, get totally ignored.

‘Tis said that actions (or lack of them) speak louder than words. So just why would elected representatives ignore the outcomes of a wellattended public meeting of residents within Mareeba Shire and yet show some support to a MSC submission to relevant Ministers and the Premier?

Incidentally, let us not all wait for the touted Local Government Association of Queensland to garner any success on rising crime despite the pandering of our leaders. The fact is that LGAQ is only an advocacy group. No teeth. No actual jurisdiction.

A lot like some other local groups I reckon. Little if any success and totally unaccountable.

SPORT Torimba Queen determined to join campdrafting royalty

BY SALLY TURLEY NOMINATED in the Ravenshoe Junior Sports category of this year's Australia Day awards and sitting at the number one spot in the Australian Campdrafting Association's (ACA) Juvenile Northern Zone standings, reigning Torimba Queen Anastasia Theocari knows what she wants and does not hesitate to chase down her dreams.

Growing up on Morecambe Station, near Mt Garnet in a “horse focussed family”, Anastasia competed in the “minis” at her first campdraft at Eureka Creek when she was just eight years of age.

“I played football and netball for two years, making it into the Atherton and Mareeba representative teams, but I decided early on that campdrafting was my sport,” Anastasia said.

Australia's second biggest equestrian sport after horse racing and unique to this country, campdrafting kicked off at the Tenterfield show in 1885 and exemplifies the horse work carried out on our cattle stations throughout the interior.

“My ultimate goal is to become one of Australia's top horsewomen. I want to win the title for the year's highest scoring Open rider,” Anastasia said.

“I would like to be versatile enough to perform well in the arena and to train horses to do well in a number of events.

I would love to win the Man from Snowy River Challenge."

Offering a huge prize pool, the annual challenge highlights the special relationship between horse and rider in an intense, hard-fought competition.

“I am lucky to have been attending horsemanship clinics for many years and have observed the techniques adopted by the sport's leaders. At industry events, I am like a sponge, always trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can,” Anastasia said.

“You will always find me sitting with the ‘best of the best’, listening to

their advice, watching how they warm up their horses before an event, just watching and listening how they do what they do.”

Anastasia received a huge confidence boost when she placed 6th in the Juvenile Draft National Finals at Mareeba in 2019.

“I was so nervous before the competition I told my Mum I thought I was going to be sick, but getting into the top 10 in such a big event really put a cherry on top of my year,” she said.

“I placed in the Novice final in Normanton and decided to work really hard in 2020 to consistently place or get around a full course at every opportunity. My 2021 competition highlight occurred at Eureka Creek when I won the Juvenile event and topped the carnival with my cut out score of 94 points.”

That weekend, the 16-year-old also managed a 4th in the Novice draft on Stylish Miss Chick and made it into the winners circle, scoring a 10th place in the $40,000 Nugget of the North Maiden Draft on Laroona Madonna.

“That day I got my first taste of being in the line-up with the ‘best of the best’ from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. So many experienced competitors have helped me to keep improving and inspired me to keep improving,” she said.

Anastasia's typical day starts at 5am when she warms her horses up with a 10km run before a session of drafting practice, working on their ability to move, stop and read a cow, attends school and repeats it all again in the afternoon.

Covid stopped Anastasia getting to the Warwick Gold Cup last year, but this year she hopes to spend several months on the road attending premier events at Condamine, Chinchilla and Warwick and the National ACA finals in Springsure in April for her last chance to contest the National Title as a Juvenile.

Laroona Madonna and Anastasia made a good team at last year's Eureka Creek draft.

They won the Juvenile event with this ride and scored a massive 94 point cut out.

Anastasia is passionate about promoting her beloved home town of Ravenshoe and while at home she is committed to training young local children in all aspects of horsemanship.

“This year I want to start holding 15 years and under riding clinics, getting kids onto a horse, teaching them the basics and putting them through a camp drafting dry pattern I will adapt to suit the program,” she said.

During her own school holidays, Anastasia travelled to Ellimeek Station near Pentland to take part in a Darcy Davison run three-week horse clinic which involved 10 people taking 40 unbroken, unhandled horses and starting from the ground up, delivering each horse back to their owners in a “ready to ride” state at the end of the 21 days.

a horse in three weeks,” Anastasia said.

“We could ride them standing up in the saddle and crack whips off their back. I would eventually like to breed and train my own stallion and have him standing at stud.”

But in the meantime, the 2022 school captain plans to finish Year 12 and pursue veterinary science, agribusiness or ag science at university

with the aim of working with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and eventually setting up her own mobile practice as an equine vet.

With all of that planned, it’s just as well Miss Theocari started her scheduled Year 12 assessments last year to ensure she could squeeze everything in to what is sure to be a very hectic year to come.

NOMINATIONS are now open for the region's most iconic race, The Great Wheelbarrow Race, as it makes a return this May. Due to Covid, the last race was held in 2019, but now with restrictions eased, the race is set to return bigger and better than ever.

The team behind the Great Wheelbarrow Race is hoping to fully revive the event in all its glory and is now asking for nominations.

The Great Wheelbarrow Race Committee chair Locky Benstead said it’s “all systems go” for this year’s race.

“It’s all systems go, we’ve decided that we’re going to push this literally as far and as good as

we can, making sure we still comply with regulations,” he said.

“It’s all or nothing this year because the longer we don’t run the event, the higher chance of it not happening again.

“We don’t want to lose this race, it is so important for not only the communities it goes through but the people who race.”

THE Atherton BMX Club is looking to strengthen its ranks of national level riders, as they host a come and try day this Saturday.

Held at their clubhouse and track from 4pm to 6pm, the come and try day provides interested kids and parents with a chance to try their hand at BMX. Riders as young as two to over 60 participate in BMX across the country, it is a sport that can offer something for riders of all ages and abilities.

Atherton BMX Club president Mick Gadsby is inviting families to come

along to their come and try day this weekend and join in on some biking fun.

“The Atherton BMX Club is a very family orientated club. We have families that started out with just the kids riding and now we have the kids, mums and dads riding too,” he said.

“BMX is a sport that offers riders individual choice as to how little or how much they want to put in.

“It can be just for fun or riders can pursue higher development opportunities.

Long term club member and rider, 14-year-old Aidan Moses has been riding since he was four and he is encouraging other kids to get involved.

“It is great fun racing around the track jumping the jumps,” he said.

“You meet heaps of different people too.”

Attendees are encouraged to stay after the come and try day to watch club racing from 6.30pm.

Try your hand at netball TO kick off the 2022 netball season, Mareeba Netball Association is hosting a come and try and sign on day this Saturday.

Netball courts will be brimming with players over the coming weeks as the local season kicks in February. This weekend is a chance for all new and old players to come along, have some fun and try the game.

The day also gives people a chance to sign up if they are struggling through the online system.

Mareeba Netball Association president Michelle Cifuentes said the club is excited for the season ahead and is encouraging people to come along this Saturday.

“We’re encouraging our junior players to come along, get on the court again and touch the ball – any new players or players that are unsure are welcome to come along and have a go,” she said. “At the same time, we will be working with people who are interested in coaching and showing them how to run drills and get organised to run a session with kids.

“Not only are we improving our player base but we are encouraging people to jump into coaching roles with the association.”

The come and try/sign on day will be held at the netball courts at Davies Park from 9am to 11am.

SPORT Sheppard returns to steer Gladiators

FORMER NRL player and Northern Pride premiership star, Chris Sheppard has returned to his roots in 2022 taking on the role of head coach at the Mareeba Gladiators.

Sheppard, a junior Gladiator himself, is excited to come on board with the club and lead the Gladiators in 2022.

The Gladiators fought valiantly throughout last season but multiple injuries and close calls put them just short of a finals appearance.

Now Sheppard, with 65 NRL games under his belt is looking to lead the Gladiators into a premiership winning position, after taking over the reigns from 2021 A grade captain coach Trent Barnard.

“I’ve done a little bit of coaching and other bits and pieces since then, I coached Mareeba for a year back in 2007,” he said.

“Obviously been close to the club, I’ve run water and done other things for them.

“I was keen to get involved again, I could see the boys last year were really close -Trent built a fantastic culture here and the boys are really tight.”

Sheppard will juggle his duties as the current U16 Northern Pride Coach and the Gladiators A grade coach as he attempts to steer both sides to victory.

The plan for the Gladiators is to take each game, point and run one at a time and steadily move forward in the season, one foot in front of the other.

Despite losing quality players such as Clint Posselt, Kurt Jackson, Ezra Tokarahi and Jack Pedersen, Sheppard is confident the Gladiators will push through.

“We’ve lost some quality players, they’re not someone you can just go and replace tomorrow,” he said.

“To lose them is disappointing, but that’s how life goes and we’ve got to give someone else a chance and it’s next man up now.”

Locals will be the recruitment focus this time round with many young and promising footballers climbing through the ranks at Mareeba.

New coaches set to lead Bulls in 2022

THE Mareeba Bulls are gearing up for another season, looking towards the top of the podium as they announce their new senior coaching line-up.

Allan Prizmic will take up a position as the youth coach after a highly successful stint as the Bulls third division coach last season.

The Reserves will be coached by Joe Marinelli, while Kane Alderton has taken over the mantle as the premier men’s coach after many years on the field himself.

Marcello Savaglio will be reprising his role and lead the Bulls premier ladies to another hopeful grand final appearance this season.

While the club does have both a third and second division team, the search for coaches is still ongoing and will be announced at a later date.
