A DRIVER awareness program providing young people with the skills and strategies they need to stay safe on the road continues to help save lives.

Now in its twelfth year, the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program held annually in Mareeba, has seen thousands of high schoolers complete the one-day intensive course.

This year, just over 100 Year 11 students from Mareeba State High School and Mount St Bernard College in Herberton were given the opportunity last Thursday to set road safety goals and build strategies alongside the friends they will most likely be riding with, as driver or passengers.

Young people continue to

be over represented in the road deaths and serious injuries and RYDA, being the leading and only national road safety education program for youth in Australia, continues to deliver awareness to help reduce death and injury amongst young people on our roads.

With most on the brink of becoming learner drivers, it teaches students about how the choices they make behind the wheel can prove fatal.

Every young person contributes to the safety of the road users around them and RYDA helps young people make positive contributions from any seat of the car.

Driver behaviour and what happens on the road when poor

choices are made was displayed in a series of confronting sessions.

“It’s a very good day – the actual day is pretty hard hitting, it’s a fun day, but it gets the right triggers and makes them think about the responsibilty of being a driver and passenger in a vehicle, Mareeba Rotary’s RYDA coordinator Charlie Martens said.

“It’s about reducing the risks on the road.

“The skills of critical thinking and an understanding and appreciation for safety on the road – both as drivers and potentially highly-influential passengers – is important.

“They are at the age where they have their learners and will soon be in charge of a car, so we

hope the day has provided them with valuable information and tools on road safety."

The day included six workshops ranging from mindset to road choices, driving so others can survive and the students also received first-hand experience at judging safe stopping distances and how much difference travelling just 20km/h faster can make.

“If we can save one life or stop someone getting hurt, then the program is all worthwhile," said Mr Martens.

The day also coincided with Road Safety Week and Rotarians, Queensland Police, Mareeba PCYC and many Rotarians and community volunteers made the event possible for the students.

Veteran top gun to pursue legal proceedings against Council

BY MICHAEL WARREN A LOCAL MAN who won his recent Supreme Court case battle which ruled he can continue to store and work on his beloved planes inside a local hangar says he now plans to start immediate legal proceedings against Mareeba Shire Council.

Richard Rudd, whose story captured recent national attention says the hangar lockout saw one of his planes fall into a state of un-airworthiness and as such he couldn’t provide the upkeep and maintenance it required to stay in the air.

As such the 82 year-old who has been flying planes for the past 66 years said when his immediate health improves his priority is to recoup the losses he’s absorbed from being locked out of the hangar for nearly 12 months.

“Because I’ve been locked out I haven’t been able to put the oil through the engine or run the engine, the (Boeing Stearman) plane’s battery is also ruined and needs replacing.

“As such my intention is to start legal proceedings against Council.

“I’m happy I won the case but it’s been nearly 12 months of sleepless nights, financial worries, stress and hurt, which has actually damaged my health, and I’ll be seeking further compensation.”

Mr Rudd who first worked on

planes as a 15-year-old reiterated the bed inside the hangar is for convenience purposes only and not in any way for permanent residency reasons.

The bed inside the hangar was a contentious issue as MSC suggested its presence indicated the long time pilot was potentially living on site.

“Again the bed is here to rest between works – sometimes I drop my wife at work at 9am and I’m here at the hangar until 9pm until I pick her up, so as an 82 year-old man, sometimes I’ll have a quick nap, but by no means do I live here at the hangar.”

Mr Rudd said he feels vindicated by the recent Supreme Court decision.

“I was initially somewhat shellshocked by the Council’s decision to take the case forward, but I always knew the truth, and that came out in the judge’s ruling,” he said.

“My message to Mareeba Shire Council is this; whenever they take action against a person, they better make sure they get it absolutely right.

"By that I mean legal, spelling wise, wording, and everything else, because this has been the most disgusting exercise I’ve ever come across in my life.”

A spokesperson for Mareeba Shire Council advised “it was not aware of any action that Mr Rudd intends to take.”

“It looked like a good contract until the builder went broke and now I’m locked into the work with my house backing my overdraft.”

BY MICHAEL WARREN TABLELANDS residents have experienced a frustrating few days with local Telstra customers experiencing ongoing poor mobile reception and internet coverage issues.

In a poll run on the Tablelands Unite Facebook page more than 320 respondees voted that they had experienced major mobile phone reception issues over the past few days.

In a recent message to local customers Telstra acknowledged there was a “performance issue”

and said it would continue to troubleshoot the issue as a priority.

Atherton’s main street has felt the full force of the Telstra blackspot issues over the past few days with many businesses unable to complete transactions because of poor internet and coverage issues.

The ongoing matter has had other troublesome flow on effects with customers attending local businesses like Overflow, Bunnings and BigW unable to check-in via the Queensland COVID app.

Visitors at Herberton’s Historical Village also had issues using the COVID safe check-in app last week as well.

Tolga residents haven’t escaped the problem either, with many local residents there also reporting major issues with poor mobile phone coverage along with speed and internet connectivity issues.

The issue seemed to improve Wednesday night however many local residents still reported ongoing issues with their Telstra services late last week.

“We thought we’d fixed the

problem, but it’s turned out to be more complex than we’d first anticipated,” Telstra Regional General Manager Rachel Cliffe said.

“I know this is frustrating for customers and I ask that they bear with us while we try to get services running normally again.

We’re really sorry for the inconvenience.

“In the meantime, businesses in Atherton and Tolga can talk to their bank about connecting their EFTPOS terminals to their nbn or Wi-Fi connection to prevent delays in processing transactions.”

ONE of the key issues that continues to plague the Tablelands – juvenile and youth crime offending – will be a top of the agenda when the Mareeba taskforce convenes next Monday.

Local business, industry, Government and community services representatives will combine to discuss the troublesome matter at the September 6 meeting in the wake of increased juvenile and youth crime offending in Mareeba and The Tablelands over the past six months.

That offending includes the highly publicised and devastat-

ing Performance Motors blaze on June 29 in Mareeba, a brazen morning theft at a local pet shop and repeated vandalism to the Byrnes St cenotaph.

Council has previously noted that taskforce is a joint initiative of the local Chamber of Commerce and Council and has been established to assist with the facilitation and promotion of Mareeba's prosperity and wellbeing.

The taskforce is also an avenue for business, industry, community service and government agency representatives

to collaborate and find ways to address the big local issues for economic growth and community wellbeing in our town and region.

Other important issues expected to be discussed in further taskforce meetings, among others, are expected to include COVID recovery, grants and funding opportunities, investment attraction, community safety, youth justice issues and the needs of families with vulnerable children, housing, education, active recreation and addressing disadvantage.

Cedric Davies Hub formally opened

COOK MP Cynthia Lui has officially opened Mareeba’s new Cedric Davies Community Hub. The official opening, held on Friday August 27, marked the completion of a major project by Mareeba Shire Council, made possible by State and Federal Government funding.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin explained the importance of the project to Mareeba.

"The Cedric Davies Community Hub is significant to the Mareeba community in many ways,” Ms Toppin said.

“Firstly, the facility is named in honour of the late Cedric Davies who served our community as a councillor for 23 years, with 15 years as shire chairman."

An Order of Australia medal recipient, Mr Davies was also an active Rotarian for 51 years and was instrumental in the completion of many significant community projects which still benefit the Mareeba community to this day.

"The Cedric Davies Community Hub incorporates a new library, community hall, bowls

clubhouse and covered bowling green in a combined facility and has been designed with the future in mind,” a delighted Ms Toppin said.

With funding through the Queensland Government's Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program and Works for Queensland Program, and the Australian Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program the three-stage project includes modifications to the main building and construction of a new bowls clubhouse and synthetic covered bowling green.

The first and second stages, completed last year involved the design and construction of an improved bowls clubhouse facility and the replacement of an existing lawn green with an undercover synthetic equivalent.

The project’s third stage involved the refurbishment of the existing main building to cater for community services and training activities, creation of a space for community events and recreational activities, and

provision of space for a modern multi-faceted library service.

The new library features an increased amount of space, more than doubling the current public library area, and providing an enhanced level of service to its patrons. It is more accessible and has a mobility scooterrecharge facility at the entrance.

The new library also has dedicated areas for adult learning and university and high school students, and an assigned space for the under-fives to enhance their understanding of numeracy and literacy, by learning through play to help them get ready for prep school.

"There is also an area of the library dedicated to young people, bequeathed by Laurie Tracona, which will feature a collection of youth books and library items, a gaming console, television and study area."

The new library also features a mural painted by acclaimed local mural artist, Tom Cosic, which reflects the values of inclusion, creativity and literacy and points to the future of the library service.

The Cedric Davies Community Hub is located at 43 Anzac Avenue, Mareeba with the Library open Monday to Friday, from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 9am to 12noon.

THE Morrison Government has delivered a vital new agriculture visa to help secure the future of rural and regional Australia.

The new Agricultural Worker Visa will provide a long term, reliable workforce for our critical industries while solving one of the great challenges facing regional Australia in recent history.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said he was incredibly proud to be a part of the government that has consistently fought for and delivered for regional communities.

“The agriculture visa will be in place no later than 30 Sep-

Tom English and navigator Trent Vidler are ready for this weekend's Targa Great Barrier Reef rally.

Targa revving up for return

MALANDA’S Tom English has spent the last couple weeks putting the finishing touches on his 1967 Holden HR Ute, in preparation for the annual Targa Great Barrier Reef race set to begin on Friday.

After two years driving in the tour category Mr English decided that it just wasn’t enough to get his heart racing and blood pumping, hence entering

the competition for this year’s event.

Mr English and one of his childhood friends Trent Vidler will lead the ute through the twists and turns of the Kuranda Range, Cairns and Tablelands areas in the Thoroughbred Trophy category.

Racing has always been a passion for Mr English but he could never find that “kick in the bum” to get him into

gear and onto the track, until Targa.

“I’ve always been interested in racing but never had the opportunity,” he said.

“It’s a passion I’ve always had just needed that kick in the bum to do something.

“I had a desire to compete, what we were doing was fun but we just want to rag it and have a good time.

“Nothing else gives you that rush.”

While Mr English always enjoyed his time behind the wheel in the touring side of the event, he wanted to experience the heart of the event, the pressure, enjoyment and adrenaline of competing against others and yourself.

“It’s all getting very close and I can’t wait for it to happen,” he said.

Mr English along with the rest of

the other competitors will be making a quick pit stop at the Atherton Showgrounds on Friday before commencing the race.

There will be 70 cars in total split into the touring and competitive categories, the first cars are expected to arrive by 10:15am and last to leave by 12.30pm.

Mareeba’s new animal facility officially opens MAREEBA’S new animal management facility is officially now open.

Funded through the Queensland Government's Works for Queensland Program, the project provides a modern facility that meets current standards for health and safety and animal welfare.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin explained the importance of the Mareeba animal management facility which includes a pound, a boarding kennel and an animal refuge.

"The upgrade of the facility is long overdue, with the previous pound and animal refuge no longer meeting modern requirements. The new facility will allow the lessee to deliver a high-

quality service now, and into the future,” Mayor Toppin said.

"The previous facility had reached the end of its useful life and Council prioritised this project in order to ensure the service could continue in Mareeba.

“This was made possible due to the support of the State government.”

The Mareeba Shire Council budget for Health and Regulatory services for the 2021/22 financial year is approximately $2 million and with a project value of $1 million, the upgrade of the Mareeba pound is a significant investment into the future of animal management in the Shire.

MP vents concerns about Highway mobile blackspots EARLIER this year Kennedy MP, Bob Katter, wrote to the Federal Minister for Communications about the mobile phone coverage black spots along the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Speewah, which he believes are dangerous and are affecting productivity.

Minister Paul Fletcher acknowledged the black spots and has confirmed that this section of the Kennedy Highway has now been added to the Department’s central register of locations which have received a complaint concerning poor or non-existent phone coverage.

“This register is used by the Government to inform future policy decisions and is also made available to all bidders for their consideration when applying for funding under the Mobile Black

Spot Program,” Minister Fletcher wrote in the letter.

“Community members may wish to contact their local council and the Mobile Network Operators to make their coverage issues know. When local communities and councils engage with operators it increases the likelihood that a mobile base station application will be put forward under the Mobile Black Spot Program.”

Mr Katter has requested a meeting with Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Angela Toppin, to discuss the Highway black spots and any other telecommunications issues in the region.

“Outside of Brisbane, the Kennedy Highway is one of the more important commercial roads in Queensland,” Mr Katter said.

“People work while driving in their cars with hands-free calls, especially in the Covid-era.

“I estimate the black spots between Mareeba and Speewah are costing $7M in lost productivity every year (2-minute phone call costs $2 and 10,000 cars use the road every day).

“The impact on farmers and businesses who can’t make calls for their job is enormous.

“Telstra should address these black spot areas as they will actually make a return on investment with the heavy amount of traffic that passes through there. The Federal Government has also made $68m available to address mobile black spots in Northern Australia. “There is the issue of accidents as well, where emergency responses will be delayed if people can’t call triple-zero.”

PARENTS looking for ways to entertain the kids now have another option with Council’s bright and shiny new playground at Centenary Park in Mareeba officially open and ready for action.

The fully shaded playground includes a new slippery dip, seesaw, rope climb and other fun upgrades and equipment.

“The new playground for Centenary Park has been a long-

awaited project for many of our local families,” Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin told The Express.

“Council is very proud of it; some weeks ago it was damaged and that delayed its proper opening”.

The park is State Government funded under its Queensland Works program.

“We conducted a parks and open spaces survey earlier this

year and the feedback was the local community wanted more facilities like this,” Mayor Toppin said.

“As such Council is presently developing a strategy for parks and open spaces throughout the shire.

“We intend to implement more playgrounds and public facilities throughout the shire over the next few years.”

MSC showcases financial stability A NEW Queensland Audit Office (QAO) report has identified Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) as being in the top 30 percent of most financially stable and responsible councils in Queensland.

Since de-amalgamating in 2014 MSC has never incurred operation losses, falling in the 30 percent of Queensland councils that do not spend more than they earn, Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies brought this fact to light.

“The primary reason for Mareeba's success is due to the strong focus on strategic planning, asset management, and financial management practices,” he said during a recent council meeting.

Council had been given a sustainability rating from the Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) as 'very weak with a negative outlook', within five years council had

flipped this outcome to be ‘moderate with a neutral outlook’.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said that since 2014 the outlook has slowly been rising positively for Council.

"When Mareeba Shire Council commenced operations on 1 January 2014, it was facing a stark future with a report from Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) outlining that Council would be insolvent within a threeyear period,” she said.

Last year Council’s risk assessment done by the QUA identified its financial stability as lower, meaning a lower risk of concerns about financial sustainability based on current income, expenses, asset investment, and debt financing policies.

The audited and published financial results for 2019/20 demonstrate an operating sur-

plus of $6.5 million.

This surplus continues to lay the foundation of Council's promising long-term financial sustainability.

“This operational surplus is necessary to ensure Council is in a position to fund critical water and sewerage infrastructure asset renewals over the next 10-years,” Mayor Toppin said.

“It does not provide for any new assets, nor does it make provision unforeseen events.

“Council is cognisant of the ability for ratepayers to provide more funds and as a result, to ensure financial sustainability council has to be very circumspect about the services it provides.

“While Council would love to provide additional services to the community these are simply unaffordable.”

Juvenile four back before the courts

Four juveniles charged with the alleged arson of the Performance Motors workshop have again faced court.

BY MICHAEL WARREN FOUR juvenile females arrested and charged with arson for allegedly causing a fire that destroyed the Performance Motors workshop in the early hours of June 29 in Mareeba have recently or are set down to appear for respective committal mentions.

Two of the female juveniles were slated to appear just two days ago on Monday, August 30 for their mentions while two others are scheduled for theirs in two weeks’ time on Monday September 13.

The above dates follow previous court appearances by the quartet about the matter on June 30, July 2, August 9 and 16th.

It’s expected the four juveniles will soon be expected to answer a plea where the matter will then be determined by a judge in a District Court.

Meantime, KAP Leader and Traeger MP Robbie Katter has echoed both Kennedy MP Bob Katter and Hill MP Shane Knuth’s views that relocation sentencing to remote places like Kajabbi, 800kms west of Townsville is a potentially key measure to tackle and combat juvenile and youth crime offending.

“The need has never been greater in North Queensland for innovative policy shifts that once-and-for-all address the relentless crime issues plaguing

our communities,” Mr Katter said.

“Recently we have learned that more than 15 youths have been sitting in police watchhouses because they can’t be accommodated by the current system.

“I can guarantee you the communities of the North, whether in Townsville, Cairns, Mount Isa or the Atherton Tablelands will not accept these overcrowding issues as an excuse for returning the kids to the streets.

“What we are seeing repeatedly in juvenile justice in Queensland is a useless and vicious cycle: the kids offend, they’re sent to Cleveland (detention centre) because they are an unacceptable risk to our communities, they’re released as soon as the legislation allows and then they re-offend and are returned.

“No wonder there are never enough beds, the same kids just keep coming back; you might as well not even change their sheets.

“How much clearer can it be to our communities that the current approaches are not working – detention is simply a holiday for these hardened offenders or a chance for them to criminally indoctrinate those who are younger or more vulnerable.

“We need to get these kids out of town on a long-term ba-

sis and away from the influences that led to their criminality.

“Then we need to engage them in opportunities, educations and programs that give them a genuine shot at a future."

In recent days Hinchenbrook MP Nick Dametto has called for North Queensland to be appointed two new civilian prosecutors after Brisbane recently gained two of theirs to tackle the worst juvenile offenders in that part of the state.

That development led Mr Dametto to reiterate that North and Far North Queensland need the same treatment Brisbane has received to combat chronic and troublesome juvenile youth offenders.

“We have innocent people losing lives, law-abiding citizens being held hostage in their homes, families’ cars being stolen and lit on fire; North Queensland and Far North residents just want to feel safe in their homes," Mr Dametto said.

“While it is horrific and unacceptable that Wallabies Toutai Kefu and his family was attacked in their own homes by juveniles, this is not an issue isolated to the south-east.

“For years North Queenslanders have lived in fear they will be a target while asleep at night or be subject to mugging or car-jacking while going about their days.”

A TEAM of locals have banded together for a nationwide virtual run to raise awareness for family violence, aiming to run 1300km in the fourth annual Run Against Violence (RAV) Virtual Team Challenge.

RAV was established by Brad Smithers and Kirrily Dear in 2015 where Kirrily did a solo run from Broken Hill to Sydney in 19 days.

The run brought together people from throughout regional NSW to raise awareness about family violence and its impact on the community.

Tableland local Jeanette Gegg has brought together a team of 20 like-minded locals to

participate in this year’s virtual run, that started on Monday, August 30.

“I love this challenge as it puts it out there and makes the message more spoken about,” she said.

“I hope that just talking about it gives someone the strength to ask for help.”

Over the duration of the challenge, Jeanette’s team will track the distances of their walks and runs and upload them onto an online tracker.

The team will now aim to run or walk the 1300km over 19 days.

Co-founder of RAV Kirrily Dear said that RAV highlights

that family violence is a significant problem in our communities.

“Our virtual run equates to 1.7 million steps, the estimated number of Australians who experienced physical abuse before the age of 15,” she said.

“Our job is to engage the broader community in conversations about family violence to reduce the stigma and isolation people who have lived with domestic and family violence.

“We deliver awareness campaigns and community activities in order to create the platform for these conversations around family violence to be heard."

A new mural has been created for Speewah.

SPEEWAH has a new splash of colour after Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin unveiled a new mural in the close-knit township.

Local artist Annie Fitzpatrick painted the mural, in which she took inspiration from the picturesque Speewah Valley.

The Roscommon Park mural

upgrade comes after the previous image had fallen into poor condition.

The new mural depicts the wonderful natural landscape of the valley which includes rolling hills and plains along with cows, horses and kangaroos.

A local spokesperson said

the image will enhance community spirit and create “a sense of place for Speewah residents and visitors."

Speewah District Residents Association received a Mareeba Shire Council RADF community grant to ensure the new mural became a reality.

COVID was the furthest thing on peoples minds last Saturday as the Mareeba Multicultural Festival came to life with colour and vigour.

In its twenty second year and with a further easing of restrictions, the festival proved a huge draw card to the thousands that attended to indulge in fine food, cultural diversity and entertainment.

The large crowd soaked up every song, every dance and even all the food as many stall holders ran out due to the overwhelming demand.

“We will de-brief this week and start planning the next one.”

In these uncertain times and global grief around COVID it was refreshing to see how it used to be and the importance that events such as the Multicultural Festival has on communities.

The Atherton Parkrun community held a special tribute for Karen Kattenberg last Saturday with a special tribute run being held.

THE Atherton Parkrun family has made a touching tribute to one of their own after they held a special parkrun last Saturday in memory of Karen Kattenberg.

Mrs Kattenberg passed away in a two-car collision just outside of Mareeba on July 28.

After completing her first parkrun in 2018, Mrs Kattenberg has taken part in 69 runs, 61 of those were with the Atherton parkrun where she was often supported by her husband and their children.

A group of runners banded together to run Mrs Kattenberg’s

last recorded run time of 35:34, a run she recorded while with her family.

One of the race directors Michael Conolly said that the people involved in the parkrun are viewed as family, and the news of Mrs Kattenberg’s passing devastated the small community.

“We see our parkrun as a kind of community and we see everyone who comes along as part of our little family of runners,” she said.

“Karen had been a part of it for a long time… she brought

her husband along and he started running and her daughters as well.

“We were all completely devastated by the news of the accident… she was part of our group and we wanted to do something.”

Many of the runners who participated in the special run also picked out blue outfits, Mrs Kattenberg’s favourite colour.

Atherton Touch Football recently also held a fundraiser night to raise funds and support the Kattenberg family.

“We are showcasing the amazing things our kids can do in the visual and performing arts departments,” she said.

“So the whole showcase is to show off their talents to the public and their parents and give them a sense of pride.”

The showcase saw many members of the community gathering together to appreciate the highly commended talent at the catholic college.

Through Adversity to the Stars – new book to be released PAMELA Dickenson’s parents George and Doreen told her their experiences in World War II which has now inspired her to publish her first book ‘Through Adversity to the Stars’.

Ms Dickenson had her first release in her hometown Georgetown at their 150 +1 Anniversary celebrations, with the local pool also being renamed after George and Doreen.

She said that the book is dedicated to her brave parents and the challenges they faced when joining the Airforce.

“The book is called Through Adversity to the Stars, which is the Australian and Canadian Airforce’s motto,” she said.

“In World War II, my mum was a nurse and my father enlisted as a fighter pilot, but he embarked on a different journey as a navigator.

“This book tells the stories of them in War as well as after the war.”

Ms Dickenson said that her parents had many adventures after the war as well, that they used to listen to with her sib-

lings when they were young.

“I believe my father was the driving force of the town of Georgetown and one story that is featured is the day they renamed the boring old Australian Hotel to Wenaru,” she said.

“Everyone would ask, “when are you going to finish the bar”, “when are you going to finish building a pub?”, and it soon became a joke amongst the town people.

“When my father had a wonderful sense of humour and found out Wenaru was the Aboriginal word for watering hole, he got so excited and named the pub the Wenaru.”

BY SALLY TURLEY BUSINESS is booming at Pinnarendi StationStay and Cafe, 55kms west of Mt Garnet. The phone rings constantly and in between calls, people are arriving at the cafe to book in for a few nights, get a coffee, buy firewood for a bbq or make a reservation for breakfast lunch or dinner.

"This is the quietest day we've had since Easter," owner manager, Nadine Atkinson said happily.

The pace is hectic, but Nadine and her husband Ron are thrilled. This is what they hoped for when they launched their StationStay on the Savannah Way in 2016.

Motivated by pride in their family's five generations of farming history and a desire to share their lifestyle, food and bush culture with travellers, Nadine and Ron put all they had into their new venture.

After five years of hard work and heartfelt hospitality, Ms Atkinson said Pinnarendi, had become a 'destination.'

"From the start that was what we wanted, but for several years we were just a convenient waypoint on the way to Undara, Cobbold Gorge or Karumba," she said.

"People used to just stay one night and go on their way. Now visitors are coming here to spend a few days enjoying our pizzas, the serenity of the bush, our mocha coffees and taking time to relax and catch up with fellow travellers. Now we book day trips to the Lava Tubes for them from here.

"We always wanted to create the best station stay possible – a homely atmosphere with an upgrade. I look after people and when they come back for their second and third visits saying "I am home," I think to myself, "job's done," Ms Atkinson says smiling.

"We are up to 212 ratings on Wikicamps Australia, with not a negative comment to be seen. People are making statements like "top place, top people, top food, top atmosphere, Top That," and "these may be the best pizzas in Australia.

A new inland highway will save Tablelands and Cairns motorists 30 minutes in travel time when compared to the existing route through Kuranda. This new, safer, and wider highway, commonly known as the Bridle Track, will also open up the Tablelands, Gulf and Cape York regions, allowing greater production in agriculture and mining.

It’s the year 2021 and it’s been 30 or 40 years since we have seen real nation building projects in far north Qld. This is the time for Government to act and build this inland highway. The Qld Government has stumped up $1.6m for planning works and now I am calling on the Federal Government to get on board.

Chillagoe, Irvinebank and the Palmer River were massive mining areas, but this great mineral province has been shrunk and strangled to death because we can’t get our minerals out.

Similarly, the agricultural production on the Tablelands will be boosted by the construction of the North Johnstone Transfer water project. We need a suitable highway to transport these products. at. The new agricultural and mining opportunities that will be kickstarted by this highway will bring in more than $5b a year into the economy.

The benefit of the new inland highway will also mean that the Kuranda road can become a purpose-built tourism route, which is what it should have always been. It should be a slowmoving tourism highway through the lush jungle.

Book characters come to life CREATIVITY and imagination sparked this Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week, with Mareeba State High School (MSHS), Mareeba State School (MSS) and St Thomas’ Catholic Primary School bringing their favourite book characters to life.

CBCA Book Week has been held since 1945 and continues to celebrate the love between a person and a good book.

MSS held their book week

dress up day also last Friday and St Thomas’ held theirs last Wednesday, with students and their teachers showing off their vibrant costumes and displaying their favourite books.

MSHS Teacher Librarian Mrs Lucia Daly, who hosted a cosplay afternoon for her

book club last Friday after school, said she hopes the long tradition of Book Week continues on.

“We get the student’s to to dress up as characters from any book they’ve read with no guidances from me,” she said.

“We’ve been doing this with the CBCA Book Week for about eight years now.

“It’s really important for kids to be able to pick up a book and read.”

ON LAND the

Hard work is the answer

"IF you eat good food and do lots of exercise, you will be able to work until you are 88 years old and no matter what tragedies and challenges life throws at you, keeping on going with your work will take your mind off everything."

This was the advice Malanda local 'Jill of all trades,' Dawn Gaul had for readers and as she has worked harder and been through more ups and downs than most, she is well qualified to dispense it. Taking a break from her beloved herd recording after her knee operation, the 88 year old is still busier than most people half her age.

Born, the first of seven children to Pearl and James Soley on the 20th of May, 1933, Dawn grew up on her parents' dairy farm at Butcher's Creek outside of Malanda. Her father bought his first dairy block in 1935, and soon expanded, buying the neighbouring block in 1938.

In a time when there were no cars, no electricity and no tel-

ephone, Mrs Gaul remembers her mother milking the cows while her Dad cut scrub to develop more country. For her fourth birthday, Dawn was given her very own 1 gallon bucket so she could start hand-milking her share of the 60 strong herd.

By the time she was eight years old, her role progressed to bringing the cows into the bales each morning. The milk had to be collected, processed and delivered to the road for pick-up by 7am, so 4am starts were mandatory, rain, frost or shine.

She was sent out into the dark each morning with a kerosene lantern which was to perform the dual service of lighting the way and hopefully scare away the packs of dingoes that roamed the area. At least worrying about what would happen if her lantern blew out took her mind off the cold, the rain and the mud.

One of the highlights of her young life was going to see "Black Beauty" at the pictures in 1946, in the family's first car, an army utility. During the trip, her younger brother Stumpy,

Because of a knee operation, 88 year old Dawn Gaul of Malanda, has only just retired from her role as a herd-recorder with Dairy Express, but still keeps very busy with many other jobs.

lucky enough to be in the front, switched the car lights off.

The ute careened down over the edge of the road, throwing all the children out onto the ground. After a quick inspection revealed no injuries, they were reloaded and the excursion resumed. The movie was good, but in a young Dawn's memory, it was the packet of Jaffas the family shared that made the biggest impression.

Schooling took place at the nearby Butchers Creek school, where at one stage, seven of the 35 student population were Soley children. The closest secondary college was a lifetime away in Charters Towers, so once Dawn finished primary school, it was back home and into farming full time.

She still remembers spending an hour every milking on the separator, spinning every batch of milk 35 times before letting the clutch out and emptying the milk and the cream into their respective drums. Machines would eventually come in to replace all this manual effort, but not until all the children had married and left home.

Once the milking was done, it was home to start the household chores of chopping the wood, stoking the copper, cooking, washing and changing babies nappies. Losing her mother at

43 years of age, young Dawn took on a large part of rearing her younger siblings before marrying Edgar Robson in January, 1954.

By June 1955 they were milking 100 cows, with milking machines this time in a sharefarming arrangement on Seamark Road. A year later they had bought their own herd and were milking them and, capitalising on Edgar's station managing experience, began running bullocks as well on a farm at Gadgarra.

In September 1957 they sold their original herd, bought the plant and upgraded to a much classier herd of AIS cows at Hillcrest Road, Malanda, introducing Jerseys to increase the butter fat content. "We ran 30 sows as well, showing them at the Malanda show and selling the weaner pigs as a sideline. We made more money from the pigs than we did from the cows," she grinned.

With each shift of farm came a new baby for the Robson family. Mervyn was born at Seamark Road, in 1955, David was born at Gadgarra in 1957 and Barry arrived at the Hillcrest farm in 1961 Everything seemed to be completely on track for the hard working family, especially when the bank rang Dawn on her 29th

birthday to tell her the money had been approved for them to buy their own farm.

That night her husband came home from hospital after being taken in for a minor work injury to tell his wife he had been diagnosed with leukemia. He was gone in just nine months. Having swapped their herd for a house in Cairns, to face the treatment together, Dawn and her three little boys later moved back to her fathers place and then into a commission home before buying her own house in Malanda.

Another hectic decade followed during which Mrs Gaul married her second husband Bill Gaul in 1967, spent four years working in the Post Office and then another four years on the dryer in the 140 degrees fahreheit heat for eight hours a day at Rankine's sawmill before their daughter Helen was born in 1971.

Just 15 months later, Mrs Gaul had her little girl up and loaded into the baker's van at 4am and they delivered bread all over the Tablelands from 19721975. After Helen started preschool, Dawn began work as a herd recorder, starting at Gallo's, one of the biggest dairy operations going, milking 750 head at their peak.

She got a few things wrong that day, but soon learned the

ropes and was working with 26 different herds a month, recording their butter fat, protein, cell count and volume. She and Bill were also running bullocks on four agisted farms and when she came down with leptospirosis, things "got a bit busy."

In 1980, Dawn's son David was tragically killed in a car accident on the single lane Cleminson Creek bridge and Grandma Dawn babysat his two children for the next six years on top of all her other commitments. As always keeping busy helped her through this difficult time.

In July, Mrs Gaul had been herd-recording for a total of 46 years, 19 years with the DPI and 27 years with Dairy Express. New name for water committee THE committee which represents the interests of Tinaroo Dam irrigators has changed its name.

The Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Area Council is now known as the Tinaroo Water Committee.

Tinaroo Water Committee chairman Joe Moro said the new name better reflected the location of irrigators who hold water allocations from the Mareeba Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme (MDWSS).

“MDWSS covers an extensive area including the Barron River and Tinaroo Falls Dam area, to Granite Creek, Paddy’s Green and the South Walsh System and Mitchell River,” Mr Moro said.

“The committee felt it important that we adopt a name that reflected the people that we represent – the irrigators who buy and trade water under the MDWSS.” Mr Moro said the committee was focussed on ensuring all water users within the scheme received reliable, efficient and cost-effective water and services.

Health Committee report backs VAD Bill THE state parliamentary Health Committee has now reported on its inquiry into the proposed Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021 and has recommended it proceed.

For more than three decades Dying With Dignity Queensland and many others have been campaigning for such a law to give better end-of-life choices to terminally ill people or those with neurodegenerative disorders and experiencing intolerable suffering.

We are now roughly just three weeks from the day our 93 state MPs will start debating the Bill.

I urge all Queenslanders who support VAD, if they have not already done so, to tell their local MP that they expect them to vote for the Bill.

MPs will be given a conscience vote, but it is vital to remember that this issue is not about them or their personal attitudes to VAD. It is about giving their constituents a better choice at the end of life, so MPs really should not prioritise their personal religious or philosophical beliefs about VAD. They should not impose their opinions on others or allow their personal views to deny choice to others.

Everyone, including all 93 MPs, must also remember the simple fact that under a voluntary assisted dying law there will not be one single extra death, but there will be a lot less suffering.

Debate around Voluntary Assisted Dying I WORRY as to how our politicians view their responsibilities when offered what is a called a conscious vote. Upcoming, in the middle of September, in State Parliament will be for some a controversial subject. Namely the Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) bill.

Having spoken to the Katter party representative of Hill, I was informed that all three members have already decided on how they will vote even well before debate starts which I find quite disturbing as it goes against all I believe should be happening in our parliament where discussion should be the order of the day.

Please, please if you have any position on this subject contact your local representative and tell him or her how you feel. It’s all about choices when the time comes and we need the freedom to have our wishes acknowledged.

The National Servicemen held their recent shoot at Kurimine Beach with Tableland Branch shooter John Hewer being crowned top marksman.

COMPETITION was fierce at the recent Nasho shoot held at Kurrimine Beach where Tableland shooter John Hewer managed to hold onto his title as Top Marksman.

17 shooters attended the day out across a range of Nasho clubs including Cairns, InnisThe quick release of Sep Aloia still catches the youngsters flat-footed.

IN EVERY sporting club there is an unpaid layer of volunteers that keep the show afloat, in Mareeba basketball there have been many, and some of them do the little stuff, week after week, for the love of the game.

Veteran player, Sep Aloia, is one of those special players, that gets up and down the court and then does his turn on the score bench for those playing the next game, before heading home

each Thursday night.

Aloia missed a game for the Red Devils, a couple of weeks back, it was an anomaly.

Convenor of the Mareeba Men’s Basketball Competition, Brendan Ebner, told The Express a couple of weeks back about this out of character event.

“It’s when Sep doesn’t show up that it feels strange,” Mr Ebner said.

“It’s been a long while since

that guy had his 40th birthday, and yet he just keeps on playing, and doing his volunteering by always scoring, with a smile on his face.

“The people like Sep keep the game dribbling along.”

This week there will be an ‘Allstars game’ at 7.45pm and the rest of the regular players will have a hit out in the curtain raiser at 6.30pm.

Local footy resumes AFTER two weeks of no play both the Atherton Roosters and the Mareeba Gladiators will walk out in front of home crowds this weekend for their last home games of the season.

Due to the recent lockdown in Cairns a similar lockdown of sorts was placed on the Cairns District Rugby League (CDRL)

competition, pushing the season two weeks back.

Now with play resuming the Gladiators will be facing off against Suburbs at Davies Park on Saturday while the Roosters play Innisfail at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

Mareeba Gladiators president Darryl Fraser is hoping the

crowd of faithful football fanatics will make it out for the last home game of the season.

“It is our last home game of the season we’ve had fantastic crowds over the season,” he said. “As a club we are hoping to finish off on a high note.

“It is our sponsors night that night as well.”

Clubs to play for Mayors Cup CAIRNS District Rugby League premiership action returns to Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium this Saturday with the Atherton Senior Roosters hosting the Innisfail Leprechauns in three grades from 4pm.

It will be a welcome return to the park for both club’s after the 2021 season had been pushed back two weeks due to the COVID shutdown in Cairns.

Atherton and Innisfail

played their last competition games back on August 7 where the Roosters knocked over Tully 46-6 and the Leprechauns lost 36-12 in an upset to Yarrabah.

Innisfail took the points over Atherton in their round one 2021 clash earlier this year, but since then the Roosters have gone onto register a few handsome wins on their home turf.

Saturday night also marks the 20th contest between the two club’s for the annual John

Cole Toyota Mayors Cup which is presently held by the Roosters. Innisfail have won the cup twelve times while Atherton have enjoyed success in seven meetings.

Saturday’s under 18 match also draws plenty of interest as the finals bound Atherton side look to continue their charge towards this years title.

The young Roosters come off eight straight wins and have quickly become a force in this years under 18 competition.

A LOCAL Atherton trainer and her young gelding have taken home $87,000 in prize money after racing and winning the annual Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup last Saturday.

In a 14-horse race it was Atherton’s very own Tutelage trained by Janel Ryan who crossed the line first almost a full length ahead of runner up Maqeureau.

The five-year-old horse has now earned $185,800 in prize money over its career making it the second highest earning horse at Mrs Ryan stable.

ATHERTON Cricket has announced a $23,000 windfall thanks to the tremendous support of club sponsors and supporters during the recent Bulls Masters Tour of Atherton.

The club hosted the Bulls Masters in May, with a Sportsmans Dinner, school visits and junior development sessions.

Masters in a T20 match, only the second time the Queensland cricket legends have been beaten on tour.

Club president Tony Potts said the three-day event was a resounding success, due largely to the tremendous support of club sponsors who provided funding to help the club secure the event.

“Thanks to our sponsors

and supporters, we were able to raise an incredible $23,870 for Atherton Cricket,” Mr Potts said. “These funds will be used to improve club infrastructure.

“While volunteers are the heart and soul of our club, our sponsors are just as vital and help ensure Atherton Cricket retains its reputation as one of the strongest clubs in the region."
