NEW YORK UNIVERSITY PRESS

Tells the story of Jews from the southern shore of the Mediterranean who, between the late 1940s and the mid-1960s, migrated from their country of birth for Europe, Israel, and beyond. This book explores how practices of memory- and heritagemaking has filled an identity vacuum in three countries and helps the Jews from North Africa and Egypt to define their Jewishness in Europe and Israel today.

Argues that nostalgic activities such as visiting the Museum at Eldridge Street or eating traditional Jewish foods should be understood as American Jewish religious practices. Tracing American Jews’ involvement in a broad array of nonreligious activities, Gross argues that these practices illuminate how many American Jews are finding and making meaning within American Judaism today. The first English translation of David Reubeni's Hebrew-language diary, detailing his travels and personal travails. Reubeni's diary reveals both the dramatic desperation of Renaissance Jewish communities and the struggles of the diplomat, trickster, and dreamer who wanted to save them.

Tells the story of the Jews in Munich and Upper Bavaria who fled deportation by going underground. Archival sources and interviews with survivors and with the Germans who aided or exploited them reveal a complex, often intimate story of hope, greed, and sometimes betrayal.

The mass murder of the European Jews by Nazi Germany went hand in hand with the destruction of evidence attesting to this genocide. With its compilation of unique primary sources and skillful explication, this book addresses under-researched aspects of Nazi mass violence beyond the Holocaust and offers a resource for researching and teaching.

Arnold argues that antisemitism can also be found as an "invisible prejudice" on the left. This book offers potential remedies for this situation and suggests that a progressive political movement that takes antisemitism seriously can be a powerful force for change in the United States. 1

Offers the first full-length study, published in English, of Scholem's thought. Through his work on the Kabbalah, Scholem turned the closed world of mystical texts into a force for Jewish identity. Drawing on Scholem's early diaries and writings, this book introduces a young, soon-to-be legendary intellectual in search of himself and Judaism. 4

In the decades directly following the Holocaust, American Jewish leaders anxiously debated how to preserve and produce what they considered authentic Jewish culture. They pinned their hopes on residential summer camps for Jewish youth. This book demonstrates how a cultural crisis birthed a rite of passage that remains a significant influence in American Jewish life.

In this graphic novel, a Jewish journalist encounters an extension of the horrors of the Holocaust in North Africa. Through illustrations that convey the tension of the coming war and the grimness of the Vichy camps, this book captures the experiences of thousands of refugees through the fictional Hans, chronicling how the traumas of the Holocaust extended far beyond the borders of Europe.

A wave of plague swept the cities of northern Italy in 1630–31, ravaging Christian and Jewish communities alike. Einbinder explores the Hebrew texts that lay witness to the event. These Jewish sources on the Great Italian Plague have never been treated together as a group, but they can contribute to a bigger picture of this major outbreak and how it affected people, institutions, and beliefs.
