THE TOPIC

RESEARCH OVERVIEW This year’s research topic was focused on enabling existing entities. How can we use our platform to ideate, inspire, initiate and hopefully implement a campaign of design solutions for the under-served communities within our cities?

HOW CAN WE DO THE MOST WITH THE LEAST? Using limited resources and proposing microinterventions within our cities, how can we truly make the most impact with the least resources used?

Through every day work, there tends to be a large focus on servicing large entities. It is our responsibility to take a step back and consider the under-served community within our practice.

LEVERAGING MASS TRANSIT TO PUSH BOUNDARIES The final intervention will be scalable to all cities, using mass transit as a spring board for equal access to opportunities and resources.

Placed into three different groups, our team traveled through Chicago, Minneapolis, and La Crosse along four different public transportation lines. Based on secondary research, our groups chose various stops along the lines to explore. Journeying to these stops, we conducted observational research, gathered photo documentation, and spoke to community members. This led to further secondary research into current initiatives and synthesis of our observations. From here, we identified opportunity points for each. Findings from Phase 01 were presented in the Gensler Chicago office.

RED LINE | RECAP After riding the Red Line north to south and exploring its stations, we examined commonalities both on the station and neighborhood levels. With the Red Line being the longest line with the most ridership, we picked three stations to focus on as we found some of our observations to be amplified in them.

RED LINE | INSIGHTS We identified the ‘ingredients’ to commuting i.e. comfort, safety, security, identity, context, way finding, orientation and signage. We focused on three of these stations as they amplified the ingredients to commuting.

GREEN LINE | RECAP In order to properly capture the needs of under-served communities along CTA’s Green Line, we decided to collect both hard and soft data. It was through our findings, that we came to focus on two stops of the Green Line that were prominent to the most distressed neighborhoods in Chicago.

“All three types of segregation—income, educational, and occupational—are associated with one another,”

GREEN LINE | INSIGHTS W E S T G A R F I E L D PA R K GUYON HOTEL A great deal of West Garfield Park’s history lies between the walls of the Guyon Hotel. Currently on the National Register of Historic Places, it served as a classical dance club and was later renovated into multifamily/affordable housing. This historic building is now neglected and “languishes on in limbo”, without any signage indicating its significance.

LANDSCAPING A great deal of litter was found caught in crevices, along fences, and even spread across the sidewalk. We saw very few trash cans or recycling bins. In addition, many sidewalks and curbs were cracked/ falling apart. Weeds and overgrown grass was also apparent.

C U LT U R E West Garfield Park is home to a predominately Black population.

There we found art along the walls of the Mary Crane Center, religious buildings along the block, and majority local businesses with few franchises retail or restaurants.

There were many pedestrians walking by or locals socializing in front of boarded up storefronts.

ENGLEWOOD LOCAL VENDORS Right outside the Green Line’s Halsted stop, Englewood’s locals set up vendor booths to sell hot dogs, snow cones, jewelry, and purses, and more. Standing behind them was artwork and motivational signs that read “Rebrand”, “Rebuild”, “Revitalize”, “Englewood”. It was here that we noticed an opportunity to introduce outdoor green spaces for locals to gather and support these small businesses.

PUBLIC PLATFORM The people of Englewood are ready for a change. Many community-based organizations exist in Englewood to support and improve the lives of their residents.

While exploring the neighborhood, we were fortunate enough to meet locals passing out flyers, like for the Christian recovery home seen here. We also were met with a local spreading awareness of a missing woman. Through these interactions, we noticed a need for Englewood residents to have a public platform that reaches farther than their neighborhood block.

DEVELOPMENT In 2016, a Whole Foods Market was introduced to Englewood’s shopping center, getting the attention of developers to also add a Starbucks and Chipotle a few feet away. But why? While it is important for Englewood residents to have access to natural and organic products, some are skeptical that the development will signal and influx of wealthier residents.

MINNEAPOLIS | RECAP Traveling around different neighborhoods in Minneapolis, we were able to gather valuable insights from a diverse set of locations as well as people.

Neighborhoods visited include East Phillips, Ventura Village, Cedar Riverside, and also both downtown areas of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul).

LA CROSSE | RECAP Exploring La Crosse, Wisconsin provided another perspective into urban living on a much smaller scale.

Due to the small population, public transportation isn’t as necessary. Instead of focusing on the public transit infrastructure, we honed in on the communities themselves.

Ventura Village Neighborhood is a central hub for the Native American Community and has one of the largest homeless populations in Minneapolis. Franklin Avenue which runs through the neighborhoods, acts as the main commercial artery in the community. Franklin Avenue Station, a popular light rail stop, is on this avenue.

The Nicolette, Hennepin, and Government Plaza light rail stations in downtown are some of the busiest stops in Minneapolis. Closest to the Nicolette station, the Minneapolis Central Library has recently become a central hub for the homeless community to access information and spend time during the day.

Following our presentation of Phase 01, our groups were reassembled. Based off of the opportunity points previously identified, each group produced 50 interventions.

After analyzing these 150 interventions as a whole, these ideas were grouped together based on commonalities.

The main categories our group identified were focused around People, Goods & Services, and Information. This insight informed our new mission statement. Our groups synthesized the 150 interventions down to 9 ideas (3 for each category - People, Goods & Services, Information).

These 9 interventions were further developed and additional secondary research was conducted to inform these interventions. Phase 03 was presented in the form of a Midterm Presentation in the Gensler Chicago, La Crosse, and Minneapolis offices.

A shower can give you a sense of normalcy, foster a little hope, and build towards better health.

Public showers available for all to use on a regular basis.

This intervention would provide an access to public showers, therefore increasing the hygiene of people that do not have consistent access to running water. The shower pods could hook up to the city fire hydrants as a source of water. Funding could possibly be provided by local organizations to pay for this water usage.

We spent hours sitting at the public library, along with many others staying at the shelter, searching for a place to rent.

Homelessness has reached record level in Minnesota and the trains are becoming defacto shelters for hundreds of our neighbors who have no dignified place to sleep at night, just one tragic symptom of our affordable housing costs.

Incentivizing the positive behavior of properly putting litter away.

This concept is meant to motivate individuals to properly dispose of their trash by providing a dialogue between an interactive mobile app and the surrounding environment. The goal of this intervention is to be a minimally invasive way of reducing the chronic littering issue that many dense urban areas face and to set a framework for further environmentally inspired projects.

Taking advantage of natural resources by collecting rainwater and snow.

This concept is to raise awareness to the importance of water conservation, as well as making strides towards preserving and restoring water in natural ecosystems in bustling urban areas. This water collection system aims to restore the presence of water to the public realm and turn it into an educational opportunity, allowing those waiting at the bus or train stop to see firsthand how water is filtered, processed, and reused in design.

During the exploration phase, we addressed noise pollution by measuring noise in Sox-35th - one of the stations sandwiched in the Dan Ryan Expressway. We investigated how different types of surfaces, enclosures and furniture might absorb traffic noise so as to learn how it could be mitigated with minimal interventions.

Filling the gap of knowledge between segregated communities.

Donated books featuring information or stories from neighborhoods, history of the stops, or fictional books set in Chicago would be placed in existing crevices at CTA stops.

As a user waits for their train, they can borrow a book to-go style, and drop it off at their destination stop which would feature another library crevice or a book return. Stories both real and fiction would then be shared amongst segregated Chicago communities.

Feedback from the Midterm Presentations at the end of Phase 02, informed our group’s direction for Phase 03.

Working together as a group of 12, our team took our 9 interventions and highlighted the positive and negative feedback for each of the interventions. From here, rather than focusing on the physicality of each idea, we identified the key theme of each intervention. As a group we decided to connect all of these themes together to form one all-encompassing intervention. Additional research and concept refinement was conducted to develop this final intervention.

We determined that our most thought provoking interventions related to enhancing interconnectivity amongst communities, people, and information that was undeniably segregated. Sometimes I feel isolated by my neighborhood. I want to go downtown more but don’t have many real reasons to.

Isabelle is a recent graduate of Downers Grove North High School. She is interning in the city for the summer, but lives at home with her parents and younger sister. Isabelle sometimes meets up with friends that are in the city after work for dinner, concerts, etc.

Usually on the weekends she stays in her neighborhood and does not have much of a reason to make the trip downtown. During the school year, she comes to the city about once every 2 months.

Otherwise, he will go to Canada because the Canadian government is helping the homeless more than the US is. Over the course of the summer, our team was tasked with a prompt that had multiple interpretations. With no solid direction on where to begin, we started to explore.

Observations led to questions and then to research which led to insights and even more questions. Our project direction twisted and turned, expanded and condensed, until we finally found a way to connect the dots.

The culmination of our efforts was paved by the insightful interactions we had with local heroes, leading professionals, and community members of various backgrounds. Without them, our process and product wouldn’t be rooted in the idiosyncratic qualities of the community.
