As the Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI) celebrates its 20th Anniversary, we proudly recognize two decades of visionary leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to advancing health equity.

Founded in 2006 by Dr. David Satcher, MD, PhD, PhD, SHLI has served as a national leader in developing health equity leaders, advancing research on mental health and health disparities, and promoting evidence-based policies that improve the health and well-being of communities across the nation.

As SHLI enters its next chapter, the merger with the David Satcher Global Health Equity Institute to form the Satcher Institutes for Health Equity marks a bold new era—expanding Dr. Satcher’s extraordinary legacy from national impact to global influence. Building the Future Healthcare Workforce through Strategic Partnerships and Talent Pipeline Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) is advancing a comprehensive, evidence-informed workforce development strategy designed to strengthen the nation’s healthcare pipeline while addressing persistent physician shortages and health disparities in underserved communities. Through a continuum of educational programming spanning elementary school through residency, MSM is cultivating the next generation of diverse physicians, scientists, and health professionals.

The pathway begins with early exposure through the Tuskegee Airmen Academy, where students in grades 1–5 are introduced to science, health, and discoverybased learning. This foundation is expanded through immersive STEAM summer programs that engage middle and high school students, fostering sustained interest in STEM disciplines and healthcare careers.

At the undergraduate level, MSM leverages its strategic partnership with the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC)—including Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College—to create structured pathways into medical education. Signature initiatives such as the Early Commitment Program provide qualified students with conditional admission to medical school as early as their junior year, while the Health Sciences Academy prepares AUCC students through rigorous STEM education, mentorship, and professional development to expand and diversify Georgia’s healthcare workforce.

MSM’s workforce development model extends nationally through the More in Common Alliance with CommonSpirit Health, establishing regional medical campuses in Seattle, Chattanooga, and Bakersfield to increase physician training capacity in high-need communities. Complementing this effort, the Kern AUCC Health Scholars Pathway creates an innovative educational continuum connecting Bakersfield College, the Atlanta University Center Consortium, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. This model enables students to complete their education through an affordable, community-centered pathway before returning to serve the regions from which they came—strengthening physician retention and improving long-term community health outcomes.

Regionally, MSM’s partnership with Phoebe Putney Health System continues to expand clinical training opportunities and increase access to healthcare professionals throughout Southwest Georgia.

Collectively, these initiatives exemplify Morehouse School of Medicine’s mission to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities by increasing the diversity of the health professional and scientific workforce and advancing primary healthcare through excellence in education, research, and service. By developing intentional pathways from early education through clinical practice, MSM is creating sustainable solutions that advance health equity and build a workforce equipped to meet the evolving needs of communities across Georgia and the nation.

NMA House of Delegates Student Ambassadors 2026 Student Ambassadors serve as official representatives of Morehouse School of Medicine during the National Medical Association’s House of Delegates, gain firsthand exposure to the Association’s governance and policymaking process. Through this experience, ambassadors engage with physician leaders from across the country, strengthen their understanding of organized medicine and health policy, and develop the leadership skills to become future advocates for health equity and the medical profession.

Michael Campbell, MD Class of ‘29, ‘29, is a Bloomberg Merit Scholar and MD candidate at Morehouse School of Medicine Class of 2029. He is currently completing a summer fellowship in the Stanford HBMC Program within the Stanford Medicine Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, producing multiple research deliverables in neuroprotective stroke models and postpartum data analysis. Driven by a deep commitment to systemic health equity, Michael is the founder of a novel health literacy pipeline linking Morehouse School of Medicine with JenCare Senior Medical Center to empower senior citizens through longitudinal clinical education and advocacy. He aspires to train at a premier academic medical center in anesthesiology, bridging complex physiology with compassionate, communitycentered care.

Quintera Knight, MD Class of ‘29, ‘29, is a second-year medical student at Morehouse School of Medicine. She is from Millbrook, Alabama and attended Spelman College for her undergraduate degree where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology.

Following her degree, further exploration of research and healthcare, coupled with personal experiences with the healthcare system, ignited a passion and love for the field of medicine. She is the current research and mentorship chair of the Pathology Society at Morehouse and is a member of numerous interest groups. Her current specialty interests include Pathology, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine.

Academic Program Spotlights Morehouse School of Medicine Launches Inaugural Nursing Programs to Advance Health Equity and Transform Care In July 2025, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) reached a significant milestone by launching its Division of Nursing, which welcomed its inaugural cohort of students in August 2025. The new Graduate Education in Nursing (GEN) programs reflect MSM’s longstanding commitment to health equity and workforce development, preparing nurse leaders to address some of healthcare’s most pressing challenges, including maternal health disparities, chronic disease management, and access to quality care.

Designed for nurses seeking to influence clinical practice and healthcare systems, the GEN programs integrate advanced nursing preparation with leadership development, community engagement, and a strong focus on health justice. The curriculum is grounded in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) 2021 Essentials and emphasizes the competencies required to lead in increasingly complex care environments.

Family Nurse Practitioner Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP-FNP) The DNP-FNP program prepares advanced practice nurses to provide comprehensive, evidence-based primary care across the lifespan. With an emphasis on health equity, prevention, and community impact, graduates are positioned to meet growing workforce needs and improve access to high-quality care for underserved and medically vulnerable populations.

Students develop expertise in translating research into practice, using data to drive decision-making, shaping healthcare policy, and designing innovative models of care. Equally important, they learn to lead interprofessional teams and implement evidence-based solutions that improve outcomes for diverse patient populations and communities. At the center of the division’s offerings are two Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) pathways that prepare graduates for advanced leadership and clinical roles:

Across both pathways, students engage in experiential learning that connects academic preparation to real-world application. Areas of focus include evidence-based clinical practice, population health, health informatics, data analytics, leadership, and interprofessional collaboration.

Executive Leadership Concentration in Health Justice and Community Engagement (Post-Master’s DNP) This groundbreaking program is the nation’s first nursing doctoral program to offer a concentration in Health Justice and Community Engagement. Designed for experienced nurses and healthcare leaders, the program prepares graduates to lead systems-level transformation by addressing the social drivers of health, advancing equitable care, and strengthening partnerships between healthcare organizations and the communities they serve.

Through coursework and applied scholarship, students develop the skills to influence policy, guide organizational strategy, improve population health, and drive sustainable change across healthcare systems.

As healthcare organizations face rising complexity, workforce shortages, and persistent disparities in outcomes, MSM’s Division of Nursing is developing a new generation of nurse leaders prepared to influence care delivery beyond the bedside. Graduates will be equipped not only to provide exceptional patient care but also to lead innovation, advocate for health justice, and shape healthcare systems that better serve all communities.

The launch of the Division of Nursing marks a bold new chapter for Morehouse School of Medicine, positioning nursing leadership at the forefront of advancing health equity and transforming the future of healthcare.

Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) The Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) Degree began first as a Post-Baccalaureate non-degree program in 2011. In 2012, the program transitioned to a two-year master’s degree offering academic enhancement within a broad curriculum of biomedical science and public health courses.

Now with the addition of a new one-year degree track for advanced students, the MSMS program continues to provide a rigorous biomedical science curriculum taught by experienced faculty from MSM’s medical and graduate programs and designed to prepare students for successful application and matriculation into schools of medicine and other health professions.

The program provides courses to improve MCAT performance, student learning resources to improve study strategies, health professions exposure through scribe training, EMT training, and shadowing opportunities, interprofessional development workshops, and professional development sessions including Mitigating Cognitive Bias, Imposter Syndrome and Stereotype Threat, and the History of Race and Racism in Medicine.

Students also receive comprehensive professional development support to strengthen resumes, craft compelling personal statements, and enhance medical school applications and interview skills while exploring careers in medicine.

As of the 2025 graduating class, the MSMS degree program has graduated 255 students, with 85% entering health professional schools.

First Look The program’s educational outreach initiatives, First Look and First Look: Health T.E.A.M. (Teaching Exposing And Mentoring), allow MSMS students to extend the institution’s mission of service by supporting undergraduate and high school students who have expressed an interest in medicine and other health professions careers.

Department of Surgery The continued growth of the Morehouse School of Medicine Department of Surgery is organized around five strategic pillars: People, Research, Clinical Care, Education, and Development. Nineteen faculty members contributed individual submissions documenting hundreds of specific achievements.

Department-wide highlights include 16 named visiting professorships, 15+ active or submitted grant-funded projects, 10+ new or expanded clinical programs, 8 new trainee curricula, 6+ community outreach initiatives, and 10+ referenced publications.

People Faculty focused on mentorship, culture, and DEI. Dr. Stewart completed the Harvard Program for Chairs and holds national roles including Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the American Board of Surgery, Past President of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons and President-Elect of the Southeastern Surgical Congress. Dr. Cortez emphasized daily mentorship yielding strong trainee outcomes, while Dr. Stewart delivered nine DEI-focused visiting professorships and published on racial equity in surgical care.

Research The department advanced a broad portfolio spanning oncology, trauma, and health disparities. Dr. Burnham leads a multi-million-dollar prostate cancer research program (NCI/NIMHD U54, DoD, industry partnerships) and co-directs a screening program that has tested 2,000+ men. Dr. Stewart serves as Study Chair for an Amgen-funded Phase I trial (T-VEC/TEMPO), with results published in Molecular Therapy Oncology, and was senior author on a ten-year HIPEC outcomes study. Dr. Cortez and Dr. Nguyen advanced trauma and violenceprevention research, including one of the country’s largest whole-blood programs.

Clinical Care New and expanded programs included Dr. Alford’s first-at-institution BOTOX hernia technique and EMRintegrated calculators, Dr. Glasgow-Petela’s Anti-Freeze Initiative for unhoused populations, and Dr. Brathwaite’s community vascular screenings. Multidisciplinary efforts including tumor boards, trauma recovery clinics, spinal cord injury teams. All of these programs have expanded access to complex care for underserved populations.

Education Dr. Miller-Hammond’s leadership as Program Director produced a strong 2026 Match, new institutional partnerships (City of Hope, Phoebe Putney), and a national AI-in-medical-education initiative through her APDS Board role. Simulation innovation was a major theme: Dr. Glasgow-Petela launched the nation’s first verified Burn Subtrack for Acute Care Fellows; Dr. Jones created new Clinical Scholars and Boot Camp simulation courses; Dr. Brathwaite built a vascular anastomosis curriculum backed by industry grants.

Faculty also spoke nationally at APDS, NMA, and other venues.

Development Funding and partnerships grew substantially, led by Dr. Burnham’s six concurrent grants (over $3M from NCI/ NIMHD, DoD, and foundation sources), Dr. Brathwaite’s VA awards, and Dr. Stewart’s Amgen and NCI-funded trials. Community and philanthropic partnerships continued to expand, including efforts to sustain the Anti-Freeze Initiative and Falls Prevention Initiative.

Looking Ahead The Future is Bright for the MSM Department of Surgery.

The evidence speaks for itself: nineteen faculty engaged across every strategic pillar, over $3M in concurrent funding held by a single investigator, 16 national visiting professorships in one year, and a Match strong enough to forge partnerships with City of Hope and Phoebe Putney. But the real story isn’t the volume of achievement, it’s that this department is building infrastructure that compounds. A verified Burn Subtrack, a translational lab with a trainee waitlist, a whole-blood program training military medics nationwide, a Trauma Recovery Center scaling toward $1.5M, these aren’t isolated wins. They’re foundations for the next decade.

The department’s equity mission is operationalized, not aspirational: a prostate screening program that has reached 2,000 men, a violence-prevention initiative that cut re-injury rates from 20% to 2%, an Anti-Freeze Initiative protecting the unhoused. These are outcomes, not slogans.

And its influence extends well beyond Atlanta; faculty are shaping national surgical finance policy, AI in medical education, and speaking at APDS, NMA, and international lectureships, drawing the next generation of talent and partners toward Morehouse.

A department that produces this much growth in a single year isn’t nearing its peak; it is accelerating. This year’s foundation doesn’t just support what’s next. It guarantees it.

Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Morehouse School of Medicine’s Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program, our institution’s second residency program, is celebrating its 40th anniversary of preparing physician leaders who advance health equity through prevention, population health, and public health practice. The program combines rigorous clinical training with a fully funded Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, equipping residents with expertise in clinical preventive medicine, lifestyle medicine, occupational and environmental health, health policy, administration, and advocacy.

Through immersive experiences in local, state, and federal public health agencies, mentorship from nationally recognized faculty, and strong community partnerships, graduates are prepared to lead across healthcare systems, academic medicine, government, and community-based organizations. Building on this legacy, the program has expanded its impact through two Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)-funded initiatives focused on integrating primary care and public health within federally qualified

health centers and advancing a maternal health track designed to strengthen primary care capacity, reduce maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity, and improve outcomes for underserved populations.

Building Strategic Partnerships and Connections That Advance Health Equity The More in Common Alliance (MiCA) is a groundbreaking partnership between Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) and CommonSpirit Health (CSH) designed to recruit, educate, and train the next generation of healthcare providers who will mirror the communities they serve.

MiCA is tasked with the ambitious goal of increasing the diversity of the physician workforce and addressing health disparities communities across the country. Recognizing the critical need for physicians who reflect the communities they serve, MiCA partners with CSH institutions in regions facing significant healthcare challenges, establishing regional medical campuses (RMCs) that offer MSM’s accredited four-year MD program alongside the development of Graduate Medical Education (GME) opportunities.

A cornerstone of MiCA’s strategy is the establishment of RMCs. These decentralized sites allow MSM to extend its educational model directly into communities in need, fostering a pipeline of physicians committed to local service.

Seattle/PNW, Washington: The Seattle/PNW (Tacoma and Bremerton) campuses represent a significant step towards addressing physician shortages and diversity gaps in the Pacific Northwest, supporting a growing range of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) programs significantly expanding clerkship opportunities for MSM students. MD3 students have core rotation opportunities of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and General Surgery while MD4 students can choose from a variety of elective rotations including: Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Urology, Surgery, Radiology, and System-Based Practice. Under the leadership of Dr. Gloria RichardDavis, the Seattle/PNW RMC has quickly become a popular destination for students as they bring MSM’s inclusive medical education to this region.

Chattanooga, Tennessee: Boasting the RMC closest to MSM’s home city of Atlanta, Georgia, Regional Dean Dr. Mukta Panda aims to strengthen the physician workforce in a region experiencing pronounced health disparities. Strengthened by strategic academic and healthcare partners, significant progress has been made in curriculum adaptation and faculty recruitment, leveraging CSH robust clinical facilities for student training.

The Chattanooga campus offers MD3 students core rotations of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics (Outpatient), General Surgery, and Emergency Medicine while offering MD4 students robust elective options including Neurology, Anesthesiology, Vascular Surgery, Ambulatory Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, and Cardiology with students integrating seamlessly into the local healthcare landscape and serving a diverse southeastern community.

Bakersfield, California: Among the MSM RMCs, the Bakersfield campus is unique in that it began with a GME program versus UME. Dedicated to increasing the number of physicians serving the Central Valley, a historically underserved agricultural region, the Internal Medicine program at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital recently celebrated its second cohort of residents, bringing the total to twenty. Progress in Bakersfield has been marked by strong community engagement, the alignment of clinical resources with MSM’s educational framework, and the execution of a culturally humble curriculum. This RMC will soon announce its Regional Dean, signifying a vital expansion of UME training opportunities in a region with critical healthcare needs.

The success of the MiCA partnership is defined by five core pillars: 1. Workforce Diversity: Increasing the representation of underrepresented ethnicities in medicine.

2. Health Equity: Reducing health disparities by deploying culturally humble physicians to communities of need 3. Community Impact: Fostering sustainable healthcare solutions and improving health outcomes in partner communities.

4. Academic Excellence: Maintaining MSM’s rigorous educational standards and producing highly skilled physicians 5. Program Sustainability: Ensuring the long-term viability and growth of regional campuses and GME programs.
