Ten Long Years

DENNIS VINKOERT | PUBLISHER & EXECUTIVE EDITOR DENNIS@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM

NEW YEAR, NEW LUCK: WHICH REVOLUTIONARY SUPERYACHT DESIGN WILL BE FLYING OFF THE PROVERBIAL SHELVES IN 2015? YOU COULD CONTINUE TARGETING THE ESTABLISHED DESIGNS OF THE LAST decade – but perhaps you are more interested in newbuildings only? Well, that’s all up to you. The intriguing title of ‘Ten Long Years’ refers to the title of a vintage track of Mr. B.B. King and one of the successful songs on the album ‘Riding with the King’, which is a blues album by Eric Clapton and B.B. King. It was their first collaborative album and won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. The album reached number one on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums. The album was generally well received by reviewers, although some felt that it could have been better, and that the sound on the CD was too polished for a blues album. Purposely polished to serve its market and readers is the glossy magazine SuperYacht Industry you’re holding right now. And yes, SuperYacht Industry is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, as does our publishing house. I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished in a decade. SuperYacht Industry is one of, if not the longest running internationally recognized magazines produced in the Netherlands covering and serving the superyacht industry worldwide. At least it’s the longest running magazine in our publishing house. Over the last 10 years, I’ve regularly fallen in love with breathtaking superyacht designs. Editorial contents and coverage have been growing steadily. Major boat shows like the Monaco Yacht Show contained many references that we are still on the right track, exactly as I planned this 10 years ago! When I talk about our publishing house and the magazine’s 10th anniversary to people, they ask: what’s ahead for the next decade? To be honest I don’t have the slightest idea, neither do I have a crystal ball. What I do know is that we’re running a number of successful magazines and other products right now and fortunately both publishing house and magazines are still going great despite the economic downturn. Actually, I think I wanted to prove that there was a market need for conscientious writing about the maritime industries. My first priority is to continue and keep our magazines on course and position, one of my New Year’s resolutions.

NEWS IN BRIEF SYI FEATURE

Second Norwegian Expedition Yacht When Marin Teknikk signed an Expedition Yacht contract in spring 2013, they thought it might be a one-off contract. However, the Norway-based designer has confirmed a new contract between Graeme Hart and Kleven on another vessel of this class, type MT5006 MkII, with DP capability. The vessel is to be equipped with a helicopter deck and hangar. Marin Teknikk’s design

features five large boats for different excursions and a hangar for smaller boats and water sports equipment. The vessel will accommodate 66 people, and will include deliveries from Norwaybased suppliers such as Rolls-Royce, Hareid Group, Jets and Sperre.

New Site for Yachting Developments New Zealand yard Yachting Developments has relocated to a larger yard site, next door to its former Hobsonville facility. With teams across all disciplines, the new site offers a large office space to complement the modern 50m building shed. “We are pleased to be officially moved in to our new yard… and are looking forward to making the most of the facility,” said Ian Cook, Managing Director of Yachting Developments. Following the signing of a 33.5m Frers performance ocean cruising sloop, Hull 1012, the yard has taken on additional staff.

New Rep for Belfast Refit Yard Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine, has contracted Bacchus Yacht Consultancy of Palm Beach, Florida, to source superyacht refit work for the yard, particularly in the Florida and Caribbean refit markets. Front Street Shipyard is currently in the final stages of two major refits: a 38m Palmer Johnson pilothouse ketch and a 47m Bruce King-designed cold-molded sloop. Other notable recent refits include a 39m trideck motoryacht, a 37m classic commuter yacht, and a 32.5m aluminium Burger.

Yalla Tender Nominated The Tender to Yalla – a limousine tender built for Italian shipyard CRN earlier this year – has been nominated for a Tender Design Award. Younique Yachts built the tender in close cooperation with two other Dutch companies: Frank Laupman of Omega Architects and Van Oossanen Naval Architects. The tender is 31 feet long and with a water displacement of 4,500kg, it reached a top speed over 40 knots during the trial run. During the mandatory sea trials on the North Sea the tender performed exceptionally well despite choppy water.

RECENTLY LAUNCHED BY THE VENERABLE LÜRSSEN SHIPYARD, THE 95M CUSTOM DISPLACEMENT MOTOR YACHT KISMET IS NOW AVAILABLE for charter in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, although she already has a very full charter calendar. Featuring accommodation for 16 guests in 8 staterooms and a breathtaking interior by Reymond Langton Design, Kismet is the most desirable charter yacht in the world today, says Moran Yacht & Ship. n the summer of 2014 Lürssen successfully launched and unveiled Project Global, which was soon named ‘Kismet’. She was built for a repeat and very experienced client, who up-graded from his former 68m Lürssen yacht. Built for the owner by the Moran Yacht & Ship new construction team, Kismet is the replacement for award-winning 68m Lürssen that she was named after.

Incredible Decadence Kismet arrived in London in the autumn and left onlookers speechless, says Chris Callahan of Moran Yacht & Ship. Kismet is supervised and can be chartered by Moran Yacht & Ship. In October, Kismet cruised up the Thames to the Tower Bridge to avail herself to the world in London. She hosted an incredibly decadent party for over 250 guests of the owner including celebrities, athletes and dignitaries. After a week or two on the Thames in London, she then crossed the Atlantic and headed to

Jacksonville, Florida for a week before heading to the Caribbean. Mr Callahan says a big highlight of Kismet, in addition to all of her incredible amenities, is that her charter calendar is pretty full already. In fact, the yacht has been so busy with the owner and charters since she was launched, that they had not had a chance to organise a full photo shoot before this issue went to print. Nevertheless, with photos from her sea trials and beautiful renderings of her interior, there’s no disguising the exceptional pedigree of this large yacht.

of the interior costs were handled by the venerable Moran Yacht & Ship new construction team of Simon England, Patrick Foy and Robert and Paul Moran. Moran Yacht & Ship also wish to extend a special thank you to Rolf Leger, Tim Grotheer and project manager Olav Ruter and the entire team at the Lürssen shipyard for their hard work throughout the construction process. Also a special thank you to Captain Kyle Fultz who with his wife Gerry Fultz worked diligently over the entire 4-year building period.

Productive Partnership

Best of the Best

Built at the renowned Lürssen shipyard, Kismet is the 17th yacht built by Moran Yacht & Ship in the past 14 years in conjunction with Lürssen and certainly one of the finest yachts ever constructed. This marks the sixth transaction Moran Yacht & Ship has completed for Kismet’s extremely experienced owner, who they have had the pleasure of representing for over 15 years. Complete oversight of the construction of Kismet, from the negotiation of the building contract, compilation of the technical specifications, negotiation

Robert Moran, President of Moran Yacht & Ship, comments on the construction of Kismet at Lürssen: “Kismet represents the best of the best when it comes to the construction of a quality motor yacht. The owner’s active involvement, frequent shipyard visits, incredible knowledge and insight throughout the entire process, pushed all those involved to raise their standards to a level never before seen. We at Moran Yacht & Ship are proud to be involved in the construction of a such a great ship.”

Harmonious Proportions Kismet is a remarkable statement in large yacht construction, based on excellent design and excellent engineering skills. Lürssen says Espen Oeino has given Kismet very harmonious proportions and with a length of 95m and a beam of 13.80m, she boasts extraordinary volumes, accommodating all of the owner’s requirements whilst still maintaining sleek and very elegant lines. Innovative in every sense of the word, Kismet features eight spacious guest staterooms, a winter garden featuring outdoor fireplaces, a spectacular main lounge with breathtaking staircases and as well as state-of-the-art video walls. With elaborate interior design by Reymond Langton Design, she has a private owner’s deck, full-service spa, sauna full swimming pool and helicopter landing capabilities. And of course, she has plenty of room to carry all the tenders and toys one could think of. She has ample space for enjoying the perfect superyacht charter – from sunlounging to the most modern entertainment systems. To ensure a seamless yachting experience, Kismet has accommodation for up to 28 crew.

race E is a well-balanced, stable and, therefore, comfortable design. The fine water entry and the stretched hull guarantee efficiency, making her the ideal yacht for cruising. With her sleek looks, Grace E promises all who sail on her a unique experience. Equipped with a variety of four tenders – and related toys and garage spaces – she is the perfect yacht for exploring out-of-reach places.

In the Footsteps Following on the success of her two predecessors, Exuma and Galileo G, Grace E features the same hull and superstructure design elements that characterise the Picchiotti Vitruvius series and assure efficient and long range navigation, but with unique characteristics with regards to her specified propulsion system. Grace E features an advanced, new generation, diesel-electric propulsion system with two azipod fixed pitch propellers from ABB. The system allows for major achievements in fuel and power consumption, long range, efficiency and remarkable noise and vibration reduction relative to traditional propulsion units. When cruising at 16 knots the use of azipods enables the yacht to move silently through the water.

Long Reach Grace E also features reduced CO2 emissions due to Philippe Briand’s optimised hull. The hull has been thoroughly tested and the reduced consumption has been confirmed during sea trials. She boasts 15 percent lower fuel consumption than other yachts of this magnitude and consumes just 23 litres per nautical mile (or 2.83 litres per hour) at 12 knots. The dynamic positioning system, from Kongsberg, allows the yacht to drift above the seabed rather than dropping anchor, furthering enhancing her environmental credentials. The yacht’s 7,500 nautical mile range of autonomy is more than enough to cross both the Mediterranean and Atlantic. All energy for propulsion and hotel needs is provided by the vessel’s eight generators, which have been scaled to run at an optimal output rate of 80 percent.

light but warm and comfortable with the views and natural light being very important to them. Designed by Rémi Tessier, Grace E’s sumptuous interior incorporates rich furnishings and a subtle colour scheme to accentuate the yacht’s aura of peace, tranquillity and elegance. The architectural interior construction concept of her walls and ceilings is composed of the same panelling element of light wood in juxtaposition – sometimes horizontally, sometimes vertically. The thick panels of Sycamore are worked, sandblasted, bleached and then polished as if the wind, the salt, the sea, the sand and the sun had produced their texture, giving them a sensual touch. The panels are placed in such a way that some, which are mobile, can seamlessly slide apart to separate rooms in a natural way.

Naturally Light The polished stainless steel architectural elements on her doors, architraves and cabinets bring lightness thanks to their reflection and the purity of their lines adds strength to the picture. The floor consists of a bleached Wenge parquet with a contrasting and completely natural look. The central parts of her ceilings are laid with precious matt palladium leaves, which softly reflect light in the room as effectively by night as by day. Natural light enters through the large natural openings, allowing a generous penetration of light into the room and providing panoramic views. These openings are surrounded by Ebony high gloss varnished frames that appear like those on a painting of a beautiful seascape – but this one is real life. They are protected from sunlight by large and long hand-made white leather venetian blinds which add a fresh touch to the look. Below these frames lie an assembly of various cubes sheathed in Parchment and holding bespoke glassware and crockery.

Artistic Expression The atrium has a spectacular appearance composed of a circular tower lined in hand woven wavy gold threads laminated in a curved glass which encloses the lift capsule around which winds the staircase of soft woven leather steps. The result is as though the sun has illuminated the heart of the boat. Communication between exterior and interior spaces has been given priority in the two saloons with large openings to the exterior decks. The harmony of this palette of natural and sophisticated materials with pure timeless lines produces

a relaxing ambiance and allows the Owners’ collection of contemporary art, especially selected for the yacht, to fully express and reflect the refined taste of the Owners.

Sitting Comfortably The furniture is custom made with unique characteristics such as the up and down folding tables with “L” shaped built in sofas around them on the aft main deck or the circular tables with multiple extensions allowing for seating positions for 10 to 16 people on the upper deck with a huge lounge bed all around. The exterior furniture is also fully custom and part of the Rémi Tessier design collection, including the Shell chairs and armchairs, the director chairs as well as the very exclusive sun-beds and lounge-beds which rotate at 360° and have integrated canopies. The collection comes in leather, linen, ebony and stainless steel for seating and back-lit onyx, stainless steel, graphite and shagreen for tables. The pastel patchwork carpets complete the geometrical spirit of the design. Selective handmade embroidery work in unique designs brings a discreet but attractive touch.

It’s Not Just Paint SUPERYACHT COATINGS IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT ISCC

IN DECEMBER, 99 PROFESSIONALS FROM ELEVEN COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD ATTENDED THE INTERNATIONAL SUPERYACHT COATINGS CONFERENCE (ISCC) AT AMSTERDAM RAI. THE 2 DAYS of presentations and discussions on issues relevant to the industry underlined the commitment of professionals who realise the importance of regulations and consensus in this field. Experts representing all key roles involved in the coatings process of newly built and refitted yachts came together to discuss hot topics, define standards and investigate relevant innovations.

T

he conference began with a welcome by Peter Methven, OBE, President of ICOMIA, and an introduction by Tony Rice, conference chairman. “The ISCC has been prepared for the industry, by the industry, with valuable input from both ICOMIA committees and SYBAss,” Mr Rice said. “The focus has been on feedback from delegates and maximum interaction with the audience around every topic.”

New Sustainable Innovations The keynote speaker, Joop Ellenbroek, Managing Director at Ellenbroek Coating Solutions (ECS), challenged the coating industry to develop and introduce new and more sustainable products and technologies that match the new EU rules and legislation. “It is mainly the shipyards that are left to follow up on these rules currently but they need support from the paint industry,” he explained. “Moreover, in order to work with more sustainable products and techniques, we may

2 6 | S Y I  2 0 1 5 | Vo l u m e 1 0 | Issue 1

Paint Conference.indd 26

have to accept coatings which are not so glossy as in the past. This makes it vital that our industry innovates and looks for solutions, products and new technologies.”

Contracting & Delivery The remainder of the first day of the ISCC focussed on coatings-related aspects of yacht management. This led to wide-ranging discussions, as representatives from key roles and company types involved in the industry expressed different, and sometimes conflicting, points of view. There were many strong opinions and interests – perhaps unsurprisingly so, given that a paint job is a crucial part of the appearance of a yacht, and therefore inextricably linked to the emotions it creates. Led by the ICOMIA environmental consultant Albert Willemsen, the contracting and delivery session ultimately improved the overall understanding of parties’ roles and responsibilities, including the need for risk assessment.

Coatings Inspectors The Thursday of the conference also saw homage paid to the sixteen professionals from the marine coating industry who participated in the first RMCI course in Amsterdam. Organised by the Marine Survey Academy (the training division of the International Institute of Marine Surveying), the course was an initiative by the leading players in the marine coatings and associated fields, namely ICOMIA, SYBAss and IIMS. Its aim is to respond to a global need for formal qualifications for marine surveyors in the field of superyacht coatings. Rory Marshall, coatings inspector for 12 years and fresh RMCI candidate, described the new RMCI course as “a long overdue certification for a specialist field within the painting and construction part of the yachting industry. The RMCI course certifies sufficient knowledge of superyachts and provides a good basis for inspectors, paint managers and technical advisors so that inspection and evaluation is

EVENTS

carried out in a more standardised way.” Mr Rice agreed: “ICOMIA is very pleased with the positive attitude towards the RMCI course from the industry and would like to reach a broad consensus on a standardised report.”

New Technologies The hot topic of the second day of the ISCC was international ISO standards. Activities focussed on the need to keep ISO standards up to date through industry feedback, and on the importance for industry participation in the revision of ISO 11347. Other themes included updating ICOMIA guidelines starting January 2015, developing ICOMIA tolerance guidelines, encouraging yards to develop their own consistent finish standard. Having focussed on traditional subjects, the final part of the ISCC examined new coating technologies and materials. There was a session on the future of superyacht coatings, which considered the suitability of a new antifouling foil

as an alternative to traditional antifouling methods. The foil has already been tested by MARIN and in various environments and was found to be more sustainable and require less maintenance and less fuel thanks to its positive effect on hydraulic dynamics (i.e. less drag). Other innovative techniques discussed were electrostatic spraying, minimisation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and ionisation methods. Another session focussed on the maintenance of coating systems and measuring the quality of coatings. It described different techniques for the improved maintenance of coatings, underlined the importance of correct maintenance and of ensuring that measurement equipment is consistently well calibrated and certified, and focussed on the role of management companies in this context.

Pace of Change “The industry can be proud of its efforts to professionalise the coatings process over the years,” concluded Mr Rice. “Change is often perceived as risky and expensive, yet it ultimately reduces risk and ends up protecting both workers and the environment. It is important to continuously improve working conditions and environmental impact, and this

www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

Paint Conference.indd 29

requires investment. One of the ways of doing this is by means of new technologies such as ionisation in the workplace, which reduces VOCs and dust and meets government approval when implemented.” In January, ICOMIA updated its Technical Guideline: Minimum Acceptable Finish and Appearance for Super Yacht Gloss Coatings in light of the outcomes of the conference and will start developing an ICOMIA tolerance guideline for acceptance of contract finish specifications. “ISO standards also need to be kept up-to-date though industry feedback, which is why ICOMIA and SYBAss are requesting input from the industry,” adds Robert Van Tol. “SYBAss will further discuss all outcomes in the SYBAss Coatings Working group and plan actions on behalf of its members accordingly.” To summarise, in Mr Ellenbroek’s words, “Due to the fast pace of change within the industry, the innovation and the obvious need for consultation, I believe that the ISCC should be held more frequently – I’d like to see the next ISCC in 2016.”

Golden Wings TANKOA’S 80M PLATFORM

TANKOA YACHTS – THE ‘BOUTIQUE SHIPYARD’ BASED IN GENOA – INTRODUCED A NEW ADDITION TO THEIR RANGE WITH THE PRESENTATION OF the S801 (80m) concept, confirming their markedly innovative stance in the superyacht sector. Code-named ‘Golden Wings’, the S801 is Francesco Paszkowski’s vision of Italy’s most famous and beautiful ship of all time, the tall ship Amerigo Vespucci.

W

ith the S693 just about ready for delivery to her owner in July 2015, alongside the S701 and the S501 projects, the sophisticated design work continues on the latest and largest of the yard’s models – the S801. Tankoa S801 is a concept design based on an 80m long platform, extendable to 88m. She will have a beam of 13.50m, with 2,500GT in its 80m version.

Fully Custom Layout The main deck will take advantage of the yacht’s full beam, providing maximum

volume in this size segment. Tankoa S801 will feature four decks plus a sun deck. An enormous main deck lounge will welcome guests aboard, while the five VIP cabins with en-suite baths will be located in the fore part of the main deck to maximise silence and comfort (in line with the 70m design philosophy). The owner’s gigantic suite will be located on the upper deck aft section. His apartment will consist of a grand ‘bedroom’ with two walk-in closets, a massage zone, private SPA/ Sauna, personal office and a spacious bathroom. These

amenities are just part of the initial proposal for S801 as the shipyard will consider fully custom designed layout.

With advanced structures and applied technologies, Tankoa Yachts intends to build one of the world’s most innovative yachts. The hull will be made of high tensile steel, with a light aluminium alloy superstructure. Other state of the art technologies, such as titanium reinforcements, presently under study, should be part of the package. The S801 concept project will be completed in the next few months with further

development of technical specifications, principal system layouts and engineering.

Radically New Design Michel Karsenti, Yacht-Ology President and responsible for Sales & Marketing for Tankoa Yachts, says: “All along the inception of the S801/S881 project the aim was to bring the marketplace a different approach. We’ve seen over the last few years a number of out-of-the-box designs being launched. Most of them were trendy but looked outdated after a couple of years. With this new project, we are bringing a radically new design that retains the classic basics of an elegant superyacht. It will surely give the project a long lasting appealing elegance that any yacht buyer is concerned with achieving the best possible resale value.”

eesen Yachts announced that YN 16551, MySky, was delivered to her owners on November 28, 2014, after intensive sea trials in the North Sea. MySky is a 51m full displacement long-range motor yacht of approximately 600GT, achieving a range of 5,400 nautical miles at 10 knots. Her bold but sleek exterior comes from the pen of Frank Laupman of Omega Architects: Flushmounted tinted windows thermo-bonded to the superstructure create a continuous wall of glass that gives this vessel a highly distinctive look.

Luxurious Ambience The owners appointed world-renowned architect Erick van Egeraat to design the ultra-contemporary, sharp and sophisticated interior. A combination of crisp white leather with dark high-gloss Makassar wood and spectacularly patterned backlit white onyx inlaid within a black marble base contribute to the strongly contrasting monochrome theme. This motif is used throughout the interior producing a highly stylised, luxurious ambience. MySky accommodates up to 12 guests in five luxurious cabins. The spacious full-beam master suite is traditionally located on the main deck forward and boasts a large, elaborate bathroom including a natural stone clad steam shower and a spacious walk-in closet. The remaining four guest cabins are located on the lower deck and furnished to the highest specifications.

Relaxation & Entertainment Guests will enjoy life at sea both inside and on-deck: The main saloon aft, with its large circular dining table, lounge and bar

The upper deck lounge, with its 270-degree view and stunning rotating, circular, white leather seating area, opens onto the aft terrace, accommodating a large dining table ideal for entertainment and al fresco dining under the stars, even under way. Above, the Sundeck’s large Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun-pads, is perfect for recreation, rest and repose. A fully equipped gymnasium is located on the sundeck and is key to the design that has been created to satisfy the owner’s requirement for quality time for sports, physical training programmes and being in the outdoors. Finally, the touch-and-go helicopter pad forward of the bridge can transform into another large sun terrace providing secluded lounging even when the yacht is docked stern-to.

Comfortable Speed With such a luxurious stylish interiors and exteriors built for enjoyment, it’s no surprise that Heesen have spared no expense in outfitting the engine room with top equipment. The MTU main engines deliver 1.2MW of power, controlled by

the MTU Blue Vision system. The power train features a ZF gearbox moving Schaffran fiveblade, fixed pitch propellers. MySky can reach 15.6 knots at 50 percent load. Holding 80,000 litres of fuel, she has a range of 5,400 nautical miles at 10 knots or 3,200 nautical miles at 12 knots. Further stability is provided by Naiad Dynamics fin stabilisers and for manoeuvring, MySky has an electrically driven HRP Europe 110kW bow thruster.

Turning Heads Mark Cavendish, Sales and Marketing Director of Heesen Yachts, comments: “MySky is a very important achievement for our shipyard. Working with Erick van Egeraat and his team – who are new to yachting but are a very talented team of architects – pushed Heesen to overcome its boundaries. I believe that MySky will turn heads!”

The drop-dead date for completion of the project was Easter 2014 so that Galaxy could be presented at the Genoa Charter Show just 26 weeks away. After a clear direction was determined, works started on board with only 15 weeks to go. With a view to creating new uplifting, functional and multi-purpose spaces that would appeal to a multitude of tastes, the entire interior was overhauled and renewed including all furniture, carpets, lighting, AV equipment, right through to bathroom fixtures, bed linens, soft furnishings and service wear to create a fresh, minimalist modern environment with a unique aesthetic. The challenge was to source a range of new materials that would deliver Galaxy into a new era of charter while complementing the existing white lacquer, maple, walnut and teak décor. A core palette of stainless steel, glass, white marmorino and ivory leather was selected to harmonise with feature materials of white onyx, striking black agate and palisander veneer. Rich textured monochromatic fabrics were applied to

contemporary bespoke furniture, blinds and panelling, while pale silky carpets were chosen to round off the luxury finish. Contrasting punches of primary colour were reserved for details such as cushions and items of decoration.

New Look The new-look Galaxy was further enhanced with statement pieces from the owner’s 20th century modern art collection, including several Basquiats, a La Chapelle and a Warhol, adding a cutting edge appeal to the soothing contemporary environment. Galaxy’s transformation extended outdoors to include new backlit dining tables, state-ofthe-art lighting, and portable JBL sound system, while capping rails and teak decks were finished in Semco for an understated matt finish. A last minute decision saw all watersports toys replaced for the latest models to join Galaxy’s brand new Whitmarsh 7.1m custom tender and the gym now also houses all new equipment including a top of the range kinesis machine, treadmill and exercise bike. Major structural changes took place in both saloons, the master suite/observation lounge and VIP cabin with the aim of streamlining spaces to highlight the abundance of space and natural light, whilst also showcasing striking new design features.

Main Saloon

At the entrance to the main saloon, the original grand piano was replaced with a new internally lit white onyx bar complete with a huge

Comfortable seating alcoves to port and starboard were provided by the way of new matching sofa groups with leather pouffes over which glass palisander coffee tables slide. Moving forward, a striking ‘pièce de résistance’ backlit agate wall creates a dramatic backdrop to the new palisander, glass and stainless steel formal dining table lit by a contemporary crystal chandelier overhead. An underlit glass floor panel featuring the yacht’s logo now provides a welcoming entrance to the full-beam duplex master suite with observation lounge, via the re-modelled study with a new minimalist desk and storage areas concealed by leather panelling. Natural light floods the cabin from the huge hullside windows where custom-made Le Corbusier inspired leather chaise longues are positioned in alcoves offering wonderful views out to sea. The observation lounge was completely reconceived with comfortable relaxation chairs and a huge elevated day bed from which 180° views across the bow can be enjoyed, while the area also converts into a personal cinema with vast pop-up flat screen TV and audiophile sound system.

Significant Upgrades

The upper deck saloon, which also serves as a cinema lounge or media room was radically reconfigured to create a relaxing space with a cool funky vibe for informal gatherings. Deep white sofas, large rotating leather chairs, a bar and an 80” TV concealed behind a leatherwrapped cabinet with overhead surround sound make this a favourite area with guests. An indoor/outdoor dining area with semi-circular floor to ceiling sliding glass panels is located aft and offers a spectacular setting for dining with a view. Engineering and operational spaces on

board were also significantly upgraded to include new generators, electrical connections, mufflers, stabilisers, foredeck hydraulics, rescue tender, water treatment system upgrade, AV and IT overhaul, bridge equipment, telephone system and refrigeration.

New Generation

By the end of the refit, Galaxy’s interior was completely unrecognisable. Her crew were pivotal to the project, working around the clock alongside numerous suppliers, specialists and contractors, to ensure she was ready for unveiling at the Genoa Charter Show where brokers were astonished by the radical transformation. Galaxy’s crew were also in top form at the show, scooping two prizes – talented New Zealand head chef Cameron Davies won ‘Best Chef on a yacht over 50m’ and the interior team led by Chief Stewardess Selina Wright was runner-up for ‘Best Service Team on a yacht over 50m’. Since April, Galaxy has been booked solid with back to back charters, hosting film stars at the Cannes Film Festival and receiving acclaim for all she has to offer her new generation of clientele.

First Haul-Out

AT IMS 700 IN TOULON BAY

JUST BEFORE THE FULL CAPACITY OPENING OF THE NEW IMS 700 SITE IN TOULON BAY – WHICH WILL BE THE LARGEST YACHT REPAIR SHIPYARD IN the Mediterranean – IMS hauled out the first yacht at the new yard. Built by Heesen Yachts, the 43.25m Sister Act was successfully hauled out of the water by the new travelift in December, 5 days ahead of schedule.

T

he new IMS 700 shipyard will be fully completed and the site will be inaugurated for full capacity opening at the end of March. However in December just 9 months after the start of building works, IMS Shipyard announced that the first yacht had been successfully hauled out of the water.

Partial Opening The new travelift on the IMS 700 site carried Sister Act by Heesen Yachts – 43.25m long with a beam of 8.5m. Despite the new facilities and new travelift, IMS completed the lift 5 days ahead of schedule on 10 December. Haul-outs took place throughout the rest of December, taking up to 12 yachts. This was a partial opening of the site to satisfy demand while the team finished the last phase of the works, explains the President of IMS Shipyard Denis Pellegrino.

Accommodating 100 Yachts With the opening of the IMS 700 site in the Toulon bay (south of France), IMS will become the largest yacht repair shipyard in the Mediterranean. This site is intended for yacht refit, repair and

maintenance, and has been designed to accommodate boats from 20 to 80m. The yard will boast an unrivalled capacity in terms of numbers in the Mediterranean. The two sites together, IMS 300 and IMS 700, will be able to accommodate up to 100 yachts simultaneously.

Culmination of Colossal Project A staggering amount of work has been carried out and continues on the site, with 2,700m3 of earth removed and reused, close to 8,000t of asphalt laid on the hard-standing area, nearly 8km of cable sheaths for the cables... figures that illustrate the sheer size of the project. “Eighty people working full time on the site,” comments Mr Pellegrino. “In other words, 20,000 working hours until the completion of the shipyard and we are doubling our in-house staff. This is a rare and extremely stimulating development project for all of us. We are proud to have successfully completed the first stage of the challenge. I would like to thank the members of our teams and those at Eiffage. This is just the beginning!”

SOUTH EUROPE

SPANISH SUPERYACHT CHARTER FLEET BURGEONS

After the Tax Exemption Photo courtesy of easyboats

WITH CHARTER YACHTS OF ANY LENGTH NOW EXEMPT FROM PAYING 12 PERCENT MATRICULATION TAX WHILST OPERATING IN Spanish waters, superyachts are queuing to register in Spain. The country’s most popular cruising ground – the Balearics – is feeling the effects.

L

orenzo Vila, Director of Mallorca-based easyboats, which celebrated 25 years in business in 2014, comments, “Matriculation Tax, or IEDMT, had all-but obliterated Spanish charter by driving business into far-more-favourable EU waters. However, with the tax exemption now inscribed in law, alongside new legislation

5 0 | S Y I 2 0 1 5 | Vo l u m e 1 0 | Issue 1

Spanish Tax.indd 50

allowing non-EU-flagged boats to offer charter services, our superyacht charter market is burgeoning. A preliminary study by AEGY, the Spanish Association of Superyachts, shows that 21 yachts over 24m joined the Balearic charter market for the 2014 season. Palma-based Network Marine Consultants believe that figure is much higher in reality, most likely 34 yachts, with many more set to join the fleet for 2015. These are exciting times and not only will charter companies such as easyboats benefit from the relaxed legislation, but also the wider Spanish economy.”

Gathering Market Share The same AEGY study highlights the considerable wealth that these 21 additional yachts (ranging between 25 and 52m) have already brought to the Balearics, almost 4 million euros, broken down in terms of charter fees, fuel, food and beverage, and mooring costs. With around 600 yachts over 24m available for charter in the western Mediterranean, it’s only a matter of time before owners and captains realise that Spain is now open for business and it gathers a far larger market share and economic gain. Mr Vila finishes, “The signs are

good, legislation is becoming more favourable, and we applaud the progress that has been made so far. But a certain degree of patience will be required before we see a Spanish superyacht charter fleet that runs into the hundreds. The good news is that, charter aside, many more superyachts visited Mallorca in the summer, at least double those we spotted in 2013, as

they build the Balearics into their Mediterranean itineraries. With each Island offering a different personality: Menorca for tranquillity and unspoiled landscapes, Ibiza for glamour, beach clubs and nightlife, Formentera for an unbeatable coastline and seafood restaurants, and Mallorca for dramatic landscapes, seafront dining and high-end marinas such as Port Adriano, Port

Andratx and Puerto Portals, we can both complement and compete with the South of France and Italy.”

Balearic Business For 25 years, easyboats has been at the forefront of Balearic yacht charter, sales and management. They are a first port of call for bareboat and skippered charter and, if you’re an owner, they’ll respectfully manage and market your yacht. When it comes to purchase, from a Riva motoryacht to a custombuild superyacht, easyboats is the perfect partner. Working for vendors and buyers, they arrange valuations, marketing, sea trials, marine surveys, finance, insurance, change of ownership, RYA Training and crew. Berths, repairs, refit, maintenance and storage are also at easyboats’ fingertips. Always acting with integrity and transparency, easyboats’ personalised service comes naturally.

VAT-Free Spanish Refits For SuperYacht Industry, Lorenzo Vila, Director of easyboats, shares his knowledge of organising refit works in Spain: The recent tax exemption has not really affected the refit industry as it is not a direct tax for that sector. For that purpose, there is already a scheme, called TPA (temporary yacht importation for tax exemption) that basically allows the temporary import of a yacht for refit works without paying VAT. There are some restrictions and also requirements to qualify for this exemption: An authorized company (by customs) must apply for the TPA. To qualify, the yacht must be non-EU flagged with a non-EU owner. There are some things that do not benefit from the VAT exemption such as fuel and goods (for example, if you buy new cutlery and cushions!) so it’s only for works on the machinery, painting, furnishing, re-upholstering, etc. For control reasons: The suppliers always invoice the authorised refit company and then the company invoices the yacht. The refit company will charge an admin fee for the TPA application to lock-in and lock-out the yacht.

MIDDLE EAST’S ULTRA-HIGH NET WORTH INDIVIDUALS AT DIBS 15

Super Wealthy SUPERYACHT DEMAND

THE MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA REGION LEADS THE WORLD IN SUPERYACHT DEMAND, WITH MORE THAN HALF OF THE REGION’S ULTRA-HIGH NET WORTH INDIVIDUALS (UHNWI) LIKELY TO OWN OR BUY a superyacht, according to the Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) whose members are participating in the upcoming Dubai International Boat Show.

Robert van Tol, Operational Director, Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss).

Dedicated Dubai Platform “Globally, demand for superyachts is increasing although not as much as wealth is: we are at an all-time high for wealth and we are also at an all-time high in terms of numbers of UHNWIs,” Mr Van Tol added. To best promote the superyacht experience and lifestyle, SYBAss will again represent the world’s leading superyacht builders at the Dubai International Boat Show, bringing them together in one dedicated platform at the Superyacht Life Area of the show’s Marina Display.

Growth in Global Demand

T

he 23rd edition of Dubai International Boat Show, organised by Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), will run from 3-7 March 2015, reinforcing Dubai’s status as one of the world’s leading luxury yacht destinations, with superyacht ownership continuing to rise. “According to our latest SYBAss Economic Report, the propensity to buy a superyacht among UHNWIs in the Middle East and Africa has increased to 51 percent, from 48 percent last year. This means that more than half the UHNWIs in the region are likely to own or buy a superyacht – the highest proportion in the world,” said

DIBS.indd 52

“After some rough economic waters, there is a quiet feeling of optimism, interest and vitality in the market,” said Marcel Onkenhout, CEO of Oceanco, a SYBAss member and custom yacht builder of yachts in the 80m plus range. “This region will become even more important as marinas and yachting facilities are developed in the Middle East and the Gulf.” Oceanco, which is a long-time exhibitor at Dubai International Boat Show, currently has seven projects under construction in the 85 to 110-metre category, according to Mr Onkenhout, and opened a state-of-the-art facility at the beginning of this year to accommodate the construction of superyachts up to 140m in length. The market is continuing to see a growth in the size of superyachts under construction. According to Showboats International’s 2015 Global Order Book, orders have increased by 25 percent over

New Projects Dubai’s importance to the superyacht industry has been underlined by the recent announcement that the UAE’s Gulf Craft is to invest USD 100 million in a new shipyard located in Dubai Maritime City to build a global luxury yacht manufacturing facility. Gulf Craft, a global top 10 superyacht manufacturer in 2014, is expected to deliver 13 new project builds in 2015 according to Showboats International, totalling more than 1,500 feet. Another UAE-based luxury yacht manufacturer, Al Shaali Marine, will unveil its new USD 5.45 million AS100 model superyacht at the Dubai International Boat Show, which it describes as the first of its kind designed and manufactured in the Middle East. Dubai International Boat Show has a demonstrated track record of having secured more than 20 percent of its overall annual attendance from HNWIs (high net worth individuals are defined as having investable finance in excess of USD 1 million). FANS OF GERRY ANDERSON WILL UNDERSTAND IMMEDIATELY WHAT THIS VESSEL FROM TURKEY’S BRILLIANT BOATS AND BB YACHT IS ALL ABOUT. If not, a dive into 1960s British science-fiction television might be in order. But for those who remember the show (or the reruns), SuperYacht Industry can’t resist a look into this unique yacht. Designed to carry a 3 PAX, 1,000m capable Triton submarine (Thunderbird 4, of course!), Thunderbird 2 features an 8.5t capacity hydraulic platform for launch and recovery of the sub and other toys, along with the array of battery chargers and oxygen storage and transfer systems required to fully support the submarine. Overall dimensions are 22m x 10m, and being based in the Caribbean, her full load draught of less than 1.1m, allows access to places unimaginable in a conventional yacht.

Submarine Operations The interior, styled by Miami interior designer Karine Rousseau, offers spacious accommodation in two lower deck suites, one for the Owner and one for guests, and huge entertaining spaces, a day head, office and large galley on the main deck. A flexibly mounted and heavily insulated interior means that even at full speed, sound levels are a super quiet 65dB in the lower deck accommodation and 72dB on the main deck. The aft deck is the centre of operations for the submarine, with a dedicated sub support locker, but also has dive bottle storage and filling, a fuel pump and davits for the tender and large swim steps with bathing ladder for easy access to the water. Forward is an al fresco dining area, a giant sun pad for relaxing, and barbeque and bar area with built in fridge and ice maker.

Transatlantic Range Two Yanmar 8SY engines and Hamilton 521 waterjets provide performance of 22 knots at full speed and a transatlantic range at an economic cruise speed of 10 knots. Although built for a private client, Thunderbird 2 complies fully with MGN 280, allowing him the opportunity commercialise this unique package. A sistership is already under construction at BB Yacht and is available for delivery in time for the summer.

Feadship Orders for AntiRoll DSM Holland received an order for an AntiRoll system for the 50m Feadship ‘Endless Summer’, which will set sail this summer. Plus, during METS, DMS Holland received an order for Kuriakost, the 33m motor yacht being built by Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw (Feadship). Co-owner and commercial director of DMS Holland Patrick Noor: “These results are of course better than expected… It is clear: the market is open to innovation. It started, incidentally, with the shipyard Wim van der Valk. They were absolutely the ‘innovator’ and catalyst for AntiRoll. Van der Valk is committed to technology and innovation and had confidence in AntiRoll from the very beginning.” i. www.dmsholland.com

Why not combine both, Mr Blue Sky thought, and this unique concept was named ‘Jackie’, a floating lounger with a matching cocktail table. The Belgium-based company says Jackie is an aesthetically pleasing alternative to the inflatable air mattress. With a matching foot base, Jackie is transformed into a trendy lounger with side table. Mr Blue Sky uses modern and advanced composite materials resistant to sun, salt, chlorine, oil and sunscreen products In order to meet the specific requirements for outdoor furniture. i. www.mrbluesky.com

Ultra-Slim Glass Helm Applied Marine Automation has unveiled the latest in its range of command consoles, the ultra-slim, floating glass Blade, a modern, minimalist design. Blade provides a video wall view of all the vessel’s systems. A user interface maximises the touchscreen controls so there is no need to navigate dozens of pages. All key systems are available on the one page with pop-ups for alarms and secondary functions. Design Director Gifford Hooper said, “We want to demonstrate how helm design can be ultra-modern and offer the ultimate in convenience for a superyacht captain. The floating concept can be adapted to any boat’s interior design and having all your systems available at a glance significantly improves ease of use for safe pilotage.” i. www.appliedautomation.co.uk

Whether you need to clean the hull, detangle a rope from the propeller or simply want to explore the reef beneath, the PowerDive range of diving systems will be an asset. PowerDive is an advanced manufacturer of Surface Supply Diving Systems formally known as hookah diving. The technology in hookah diving has come a long way from steel helmets and cumbersome dive suits. With the PowerDive system, even first time divers can be underwater in minutes. PowerDive manufactures five models ranging from deck mounted and floating 12V units, through to commercial petrol set-ups. All PowerDive systems use low maintenance oil-less pumps, providing no emissions. Each unit comes complete with commercial grade diver’s hose and high quality regulator mouth pieces. i. www.powerdive.com

100m-plus Custom Projects for Marquip MarQuip has two 100m-plus projects currently underway. The company has devised custom exhaust sytems for two very different projects. Project One will utilise a traditional set up, with each generator equipped with a soot particle filter system and a single outlet up the mast. Project Two is even more customised, with three different outlets to choose from. Both projects demonstrate MarQuip’s versatility. “At MarQuip innovation never stands still,” said Dennis Bravenboer, General Manager Sales. “We ensure we are always ahead of the technology in our industry to make sure our clients are too.” i. www.marquip.nl

OUTFITTERS PAGES Sealegs Amphibious Kit for Tenders Sealegs has created a turnkey kit to allow tender builders to give their craft amphibious technology. The company presented the kit at METS. It enables European boat manufacturers to create their own amphibious craft and extend their product range without compromising the performance, comfort and character of their own tenders. The new kit caters to boats up to 7m and a 10m kit is in development. The package is bolted on to the tender, and is raised completely clear of the water while the tender is underway. The crew lower it as the vessel approaches land, and a powerful four-wheel drive system drives it over rough terrain to deliver owners and guests to land, without getting their feet wet. i. www.sealegs.com

Stable Wine Cabinet Keeps Things Steady Stable’s Wine Cabinet is just the ticket to make sure your Bordeaux rests in peace while you’re underway. Stable has developed a stabilised platform for wine cabinets to ensure the contents are not spoiled by roll and pitch movements. The standard platform is 73 x 73 x 32cm high. It carries a 60 x 60cm fridge that holds approximately 60 bottles. The stability unit can compensate for +/- 12 degrees of pitch and roll, courtesy of two electrical servomotors. Stable can also deliver a large capacity wine storage platform for around 500 bottles, which is capable of compensating for +/-5 degrees pitch and +/-10 degrees roll. i. www.stable.no

Instersleek Pro a Championship Winner

Foils for Refit at Rybovich

AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings’ Intersleek Pro is a biocide-free, foul-release hull coating for sail or power yachts. It is available in white, blue or black and delivers superior foul-release capabilities for hulls and propellers, while achieving a smooth, glossy finish at the waterline. Intersleek Pro makes it difficult for fouling organisms to tightly adhere to the surface. Additionally it reduces drag, resulting in improved fuel efficiency. Eric Jeuring, co-owner of J24: “The first impression of Intersleek Pro is downright good – the boat is shiny and looks very neat underwater and seems more responsive to small changes in the wind and accelerates smoothly… We are very pleased to report that we have… won the Open Dutch Championship with J24 and Intersleek Pro...” i. www.azkonobel.com

In December Aviva (formerly Aviva III), a 68m motoryacht custom built in 2007 by Abeking & Rasmussen, arrived at Rybovich in Florida for a refit. Wild Group will install marine foils colour matched to Awlgrip battle ship grey by Färben Foils who are currently working with Wild Group to develop tougher and glossier films and foils for the marine market. “I believe the new Färben foils and films offer a superior finish to what’s currently on the market. We are excited to be working on this project and hope it gives confidence to other Captains and owners to come forward and discover the benefits of using Färben products too,” comments Greg Hoar, Director Wild Group. i. www.wildgroupinternational.com

Halyard’s New Heat Shell

FLX: Gleistein’s Long-Life Mooring System Gleistein’s FLX Mooring System boasts exceptionally easy handling due to low weight and requires only the smallest amount of on board real estate despite extraordinary strength. The system comprises an optimal mooring line and matches this with a highly elastic tail acting as the economical sacrificial element. This means mooring line longevity is dramatically increased and the lifetime costs of the system are radically reduced – the life expectancy of the mooring line being generally in excess of most periods of yacht ownership. i. www.gleistein.com

Halyard launched an innovative new thermal insulation product at METS 2014 for OEM’s looking for an efficient and aesthetic solution to prevent heat loss on their marine exhaust systems. Heat Shell is an intuitive product that will remove bulky thermal insulation jackets on their exhaust systems. Instead a glass webbing or ‘Heat Shell’ can be applied to the riser section of the exhaust system, providing an air-tight and liquid proof covering that cannot be damaged by external agents. Assembly time is also reduced considerably, as Halyard apply the Heat Shell at their manufacturing facilities which means there is no longer a need for jackets to be fitted on site. i. www.halyard.eu.com

SYI’s Marco Geels

There’s plenty to look forward to In the superyacht world there is a great solution to winter malaise. Come mid-January, the industry turns its eyes to boot Düsseldorf. For me, a couple of days at this, the world’s leading yacht and watersport event, takes me away to sunny days in warmer climes. There is certainly enough to see – after all, this year saw more than 1,700 exhibitors spread over 17 halls. Fresh from supplying fenders to Lürssen’s Kismet was Linda Renz from Fender Design. And a trip to Germany wouldn’t be the complete without popping in to see some Deutschen Yachten members: they are going strong, offering great solutions for the industry from their shared stand. The broker market is also buoyant: Speaking to Christian Hausser at Dahm International, I learned that the company are extending their offices – first in Europe and then Dubai and the US. In June, Dahm will once again organise its Mallorca regatta – to be called the DI Race Days. But what the show really showed me is that there is a lot to look forward to this year. Royal Huisman, for example, has some awesome projects on the go at the moment. They are currently building a Sparkman & Stephens-designed racer with carbon composite hull, deck and standing rigging. Their refit guys are also busy

– among their tasks is converting the all carbon 42m Mari Cha IV (the fastest offshore racer afloat) into a high performance cruiser named Samurai. I spent some time at Wim van der Valk’s stand – notable as this was the first time that they came to Düsseldorf without a yacht on display. They are busy, however, putting the finishing touches to no less than five deliveries in the near future, including a 37m motor yacht that will hit the water in April. Esenyacht is also nearing completion of a key contract. With a hull by Dykstra Naval Architects and Tim Saunders styling – the 50m sailing yacht Troy will be ready for delivery soon. All in all, the show once again met all my expectations and, even better, really made me look forward to the summer to come. My trade show season continues with the Dubai International Boat Show at the beginning of March – I hope to see you there!
