Think about business WITH 2020 MOVING FORWARD QUICKLY AND MANY OF US HAVING ENJOYED THEIR SUMMER HOLIDAYS, IT IS NOW TIME TO THINK ABOUT BUSINESS. TIMES ARE OF COURSE STILL UNCERTAIN, BUT WE SHOULD NOT LET OURSELVES BE DISTRACTED FROM OUR LONG-TERM GOALS. This morning, before I started to write down these words, I was scrolling through the LinkedIn pages on my smartphone and I noticed many exhilarating posts from companies in our industry, and, looking through the content of this Offshore Industry issue, I see ample other signs that are also indicating a more positive market outlook. We should certainly not close our eyes to the fact that, despite a slight recovery at the start of this year, the oil & gas industry is suffering. Operators announce disappointing figures, and this negatively affects the financial health of the entire supply chain. As a result, companies go bankrupt and lots of people lose their jobs and income.

Despite all this, it is good to treasure positive news too, as positive thinking and seeking opportunities has helped many in overcoming a crisis. Renewable energy is today considered by many as one of the industries that will help to recover the world economy. Only the future will tell if this is the case, but it leaves no doubt that even in this period of time the offshore wind industry is well underway with plenty of projects and activities throughout the entire supply chain.

In this issue, you can read about the future of offshore wind in the US. Although still in its infancy, the potential of US offshore wind is enormous. When looking at employment, it is estimated that offshore wind in the US will result in 80,000 jobs in the upcoming years.

Finding the right people for the job will be a challenge on a worldwide scale. Which will not only be the case for renewables but for the entire offshore industry, as everybody is fishing in the same pond. Yet challenges are there to overcome and the recruitment industry is ready to help fill in the employment gaps.

Skilltrade Hydrographic Survey Training

Since 2001 Skilltrade has been sharing hydrographic knowledge and experience.

We started with a two-day Introduction to Hydrography course and evolved into specific courses like Multibeam echosounder, DGPS, RTK, Side Scan Sonar, Sub-bottom Profiler and Tides. Hundreds of people have been trained on these short courses to date.

Since 2008 we also offer a full Hydrographic Survey Category B curriculum as defined by the FIG/IHO/ICA International Advisory Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors (IBSC). Our Cat B training is normally an intense 30 week course (a 13 weeks e-learning programme, 1 week safety training, 12 weeks training in The Netherlands, followed by a 4 weeks Field Training Project).

However, as the development of the COVID-19 pandemic is still unpredictable, we saw no realistic possibility to deliver traditional on-site teaching this year. With approval of the IBSC all lessons that can be delivered on-line will therefore be taught using digital formats for the upcoming 25th class. Workshops, practical assignments and exams will be held in The Netherlands, in line with IBSC regulations, in March 2021.

We can offer you this modified program at a substantial lower rate than our regular on-site program. With both the health and safety of the students and staff and the IBSC regulations in mind, we trust this is an appropriate way to be become a Category B Hydrographic Surveyor during this pandemic.

NEWS IN BRIEF Ifremer chooses iXblue technology for its new 6,000m AUV Ifremer, the French National Institute for Ocean Science, has contracted iXblue to equip its new 6,000m AUV CORAL project.

CORAL stands for Constructive Offshore Robotics Alliance and aims at developing, in an industrial alliance led by Ifremer, a deep-sea seabed exploration down to 6,000m depth. The AUV will be equipped with a cutting-edge Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS), Sams-150, a Phins C7 Inertial Navigation System (INS), a sub-bottom profiler Echoes 5000 and will use iXblue’s Delph Software suite for SAS and navigation post-processing.

Available as an AUV payload, Sams-150 expands the capabilities of conventional side-scan sonar for shallow to deep-sea applications. The Sams 150’s interferometric sonar will deliver co-registered full-swath backscatter and bathymetry data, increasing the achievable resolution and coverage rate from the ultra-deep water AUV surveys. The sonar will be used with iXblue SAS processing software, Delph SAS, which will ensure seamless integration to the workflow and interpretation features.

The accurate coupling of SAS beam-forming and micro-navigation with the inertial navigation data from the Phins C7 onboard the AUV will result in optimal resolution and image quality in every environmental condition. Additionally, Delph-SAS will integrate the co-registered AUV’s multi-beam echosounder data, delivering full-swath bathymetry and sonar imaging. As the need for overlapping survey lines is reduced, the CORAL AUV coverage rate and autonomy will be maximised, thus saving time and mission costs. i. ixblue.com

Non-nuclear Density Analyser

A new generation of NON NUCLEAR density analysers based on Ultrasonic spectroscopy for a high accuracy density-measurement of the dredging slurry.

The ceramic ultrasonic and thermal sensors are designed for abrasive slurries in the dredging and tunnelling industry.

Technology Ultrasonic spectroscopy is the better and safer alternative for nuclear density meters. High energy pulses are included into the piezo element, an ultrasonic wave arises and propagates through the ceramic elements.

The reflections from the interface between the element and the slurry are measured.

On sunday 19 July, deckcargo barge CC Atlantique safely arrived in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, carrying more than 8,000t of high voltage cables. The cables will form the connection from TenneT’s Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha Platform to the onshore grid.

Blue Offshore is proud to be able to contribute to the Dutch energy transition, as it has been awarded the contract by Van Oord to supply a full cable transport spread for both the Hollandse Kust (zuid) 2020 Alpha and 2021 Beta cable transport campaigns. For this transport, Blue Offshore has mobilised the world’s first certified double basket carrousel barge, with each carrousel carrying approximately 4,000t of cable. The transport took place from Hellenic Cables in Greece. For this transport, the 122m long CC Atlantique was chartered by Van Oord. NEWS IN BRIEF Van Oord to construct Hollandse Kust (noord) offshore windfarm Following the announcement that CrossWind has been awarded the contract for the Hollandse Kust (noord) offshore windfarm, Van Oord is pleased to confirm that it has been contracted for the Balance of Plant scope. CrossWind is a joint venture between Shell and Eneco.

As Balance of Plant contractor, Van Oord’s activities encompass the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the foundations, inter-array cables and transportation and installation of the wind turbines. Van Oord will deploy its offshore installation vessels Aeolus, MPI Adventure and MPI Resolution and cable-laying vessel Nexus. i. vanoord.com

New UK alliance to fast-track energy transition Two leading energy technology and innovation organisations have announced a fiveyear collaboration to deliver next generation energy technologies and accelerate the United Kingdom’s transition to a net zero future. The Energy Transition Alliance (ETA), formed by The Oil & Gas Technology Centre (OGTC) and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, will collaborate with the energy industry to drive a focused, funded programme to develop advanced technologies, including the next generation of hydrogen production and floating offshore wind.

This is a ground-breaking collaboration which aims to transform the energy sector, accelerating the UK’s transition to a net-zero future, ensuring a reliable and secure source of power for the UK and an indigenous and competitive 21st century energy technology sector. Walk-to-Work conversion project Royal Niestern Sander has signed a contract with Dixstone Holdings for the conversion of a Platform Supply Vessel into a Walk-to-Work Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel. The vessel has arrived at the repair yard of Niestern Sander at the end of May. The conversion will take around nine months and the vessel is expected to be delivered to its owners early 2021. Based on the successful experience of the newbuild Kroonborg and the Kasteelborg conversion into a Walk-2-Work vessel back in 2018, Niestern Sander will convert the Wärtsilä-designed vessel in a similar way. The Platform Supply Vessel (currently named SK Line 728) has been built at the Wuhu shipyard i Chinl. Part of the conversion scope includes adding an extra bow thruster, daughter craft and motion-compensated gangway. NEWS IN BRIEF New AGV concept set to revolutionise offshore wind The concept design of an Autonomous Guard Vessel (AGV) is set to revolutionise the offshore industry. The AGV is specifically designed for surveillance of offshore structures throughout their life cycle, ranging from windfarms to substation platforms and cable routes. The novel design is smaller and lighter than most current guard vessels used to protect offshore operations and boasts sustainable solutions as well as exploiting the benefits of autonomous shipping. In addition, the AGV is set to operate more efficiently as well as require lower operating costs due to no crew being required. This clean and lean concept to replace conventional guard vessels came to life in a project group facilitated by LISA, a community for maritime professionals. The project group resulted in a consortium, which includes C-Job Naval Architects, SeaZip Offshore Service, Sea Machines and recently joined by MARIN and eL-Tec elektrotechniek. Their combined industry knowledge created this viable, innovative, and sustainable alternative which benefits both wind asset owners and guard vessel operators. i. c-job.com

Fugro helps Xtera Xtera has engaged Fugro to help make the NO-UK cable system one of the most secure data traffic routes across the North Sea by advising on final route selection and specifying the required burial conditions to minimise risk of cable damage from anchoring and trawling.

With a capacity of up to 216 terabits per second, the new fibre-optic cable system will significantly increase data capacity between Norway and the rest of the world and will be in service by late 2021. Enabling risk-free installation, and employing a consultative engineering approach, Fugro’s project will run for approximately 70 days and comprises a geophysical survey and shallow geotechnical testing with environmental sampling, analysis and testing, to generate a thorough understanding of the planned route. NEWS IN BRIEF ‘Cloud signing’ ceremony for SPT Offshore On 29 July 2020, SPT Offshore and Fujian Yongfu Power Engineering signed the contract for their mutual corperation in the Fujian Changle Waihai Offshore windfarm project. Changle Area A has 300MW capacity and consists of 40 wind turbines, fifteen of which are suction pile jacket foundations. Changle Area C, which has 496MW capacity, consists of 62 wind turbines that are all scheduled to be suction pile jacket foundations. SPT Offshore is responsible for the design and installation of the suction pile jacket foundations. The Changle Waihai Offshore WindFarm is locates 31-50km from shore at the east water area of Changle, Fuzhou city at an average water depth of 37 to 45m, which is further from shore and in deeper water than any other offshore windfarm in China. According to SPT Offshore, it will also be the biggest offshore windfarm to apply suction pile foundations. i. sptoffshore.com

Large oil discovery offshore Suriname Apache Corporation and Total recently announced a major oil discovery at the Kwaskwasi-1 well drilled in Block 58 offshore Suriname. This follows the January and April 2020 announcements of discoveries at the Maka Central-1 and Sapakara West-1 wells, respectively. The next exploration well on Block 58 will be at the Keskesi location.

Kwaskwasi-1 was drilled to a depth of approximately 6,645m and successfully tested for the presence of hydrocarbons in multiple stacked targets in the upper Cretaceous-aged Campanian and Santonian intervals. According to Apache, this is the best well drilled in the basin to date, with the highest net pay in the best quality reservoirs. Upon completion of operations at Kwaskwasi-1, the Sam Croft will move to the fourth prospect in Block 58, Keskesi, which is located approximately 14km southeast of Sapakara West-1.

The Keskesi exploration well will test oil-prone upper Cretaceous targets in the Campanian and Santonian intervals. i. apachecorp.com

Supporting the emergence of the US offshore wind supply chain OFFSHORE WIND IN THE US IS STILL IN ITS INFANCY. THE 30MW BLOCK ISLAND OFFSHORE WINDFARM AND THE COASTAL VIRGINIA OFFSHORE WIND PROJECTS ARE AT present commercially operating. However, with a technical potential of more than 2,000GW, offshore wind could play an important role in the US energy transition.

A

ccording to the US Department of Energy the current pipeline of offshore wind projects stands at around 29MW. With stable policies in place, the Department of Energy thinks the US could develop a total of 86GW of offshore wind projects by 2050. Market projections anticipate 20GW to 30GW of offshore wind capacity will be operational by 2030, representing up to EUR 50 billion of investment in the US economy. AWEA’s US Offshore Wind Power Economic Impact Assessment report estimates that developing this amount of offshore wind will support up to 45,000 jobs by 2025 and 83,000 jobs by 2030, depending on the level of offshore wind build and supply chain growth within the US. In addition, the development, construction, and operation of offshore wind projects in the US will deliver an annual economic output totalling as much as EUR 12.5 billion in 2025 and EUR 22 billion in 2030.

To make the US industry profit as much as possible from this energy transition, a lot must happen in the entire US supply chain.

The nonprofit organisation Business Network for Offshore Wind promotes the growth of an offshore wind cluster that fosters the emergence of an offshore wind supply chain. Offshore Industry talks with CEO and President Liz Burdock to learn more about the organisation and its objectives with respect to the development of US offshore wind.

“Our activities,” Ms Burdock tells, “are based on three elements. First, we act as a connector for the industry. We are convinced that, to profit from the development of offshore wind as much as possible, collaboration is essential.

Collaboration not only within the supply chain between the various companies involved, but also between the industry and its stakeholders such as government, population, and NGOs, as well as with organisations and companies from Europe

as they have a lot of experience and knowledge in the field of offshore wind.

Secondly, we are promoting offshore wind as an industry that, apart from being important for the energy transition, has an enormous potential when looking at jobs and economic value. Thirdly, we also provide business and public education about offshore wind and supply chain development related issues. Offshore wind is a new phenomenon in the US. Many people are not aware of the benefits offshore wind has to offer. They only see the supposed disadvantages and are not aware of the fact that this industry also has a lot to offer when looking at economic value and employment.”

Act as a connector

With its activities, the network differs from the many lobby organisations that are present in Washington DC to promote their industry among the relevant governmental departments. “Before we founded the Business Network Offshore Industry in 2013, I had been working as a lobbyist in Washington DC for many years, and I know how important the role of promoting an industry in Washington DC is”, Ms Burdock says. “However, there is much more to do. It is obvious that the future development of offshore wind has plenty to offer, but the US industry still has a lot to learn to fully profit.

As an industry, we can learn from each other and from collaborating with the many experienced European contractors and operators that are enthusiastic about the opportunities US offshore wind has to offer.

It is our aim to act as a connector in this matter and help the industry. Apart from this, raising awareness among the stakeholders of the many pros of offshore wind is another important way to pave the way for our industry.”

US companies, and most of the remaining one third are from Europe. “With this number of members, we can be considered as the world’s largest network organisation that focusses entirely on offshore wind”, voices Ms Burdock. “Other larger organisations have a broader perspective such as on and offshore wind energy, offshore oil, gas and renewables or renewable energy. It was our decision only to aim at offshore wind. So far, wind looks like the most promising offshore renewable energy source and focusing solely on this topic will make it easier to reach our goals.”

“This does not mean,” Ms Burdock continues, “that other offshore renewable sources, such as marine energy, will not be part of our portfolio by the time offshore wind will have reached a more mature status in the US, but first things first.” The Business Network for Offshore Wind takes ample initiatives to help the industry get in touch with European companies. “With RenewablesUK, we work together to exchange knowhow on various events,” Ms Burdock explains, “and we often work together with our counterparts on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, although more formal cooperation would be welcome.”

Widespread support

When looking at the development of the offshore industry, there appears an image that is similar with the European situation.

Ms Burdock elaborates, “Many US oil & gas operators are looking for ways to make a move towards renewables and it is obvious that offshore wind has a lot to offer. Those companies are used to work at sea under harsh circumstances and for them, a move towards offshore wind is not so big, especially when working together with companies that already have offshore wind experience. A joint venture with companies from the oil & gas industry is currently working on plans for the first Jones Actproof offshore windfarm. On the other hand, onshore wind in the US is already a huge industry and we notice a growing interest for going offshore from that side, too.” To make offshore wind a success for the US industry, it is important to establish a collaborating supply platform on the one side. On the other side, demand for offshore wind in the US must be stimulated. For the latter, a national survey conducted earlier this year by Public Opinion Strategies shows that over 80% of US voters favour offshore wind energy, with widespread support

coming from both major political parties and every demographic group across the country, so public opinion seems to be positive for offshore wind developments and consequently for the industry.

According to Ms Burdock. the time is right for US companies to act. “A proper supply chain is essential for making offshore wind a success for US companies. They are backed up by the Jones Act, so it will not be possible for European companies to operate without US input, however, collaborating with Europe is also important for the US companies. In this stage, they need the European knowhow for building up a track record of their own.”

Vital drivers

State policies in the eastern coastal states of Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island are presently vital drivers for the offshore wind industry, although west coast states California and Oregon are also investigating offshore wind.

Ms Burdock states, “In Oregon, both government and industry are very enthusiastic about offshore wind, whereas California is more reserved as they have to deal with many barriers that might hinder

We should join forces and act now, so we are ready when the time is right to reap. the construction of offshore windfarms. On the west coast, floating windfarms will be in favour which is still in its developing stage, as bottom fixed offshore windfarms are favorite for most situations. However, as soon as floating offshore wind scales up, this type of construction will become cheaper and increasingly common. This will surely further raise the volume of offshore wind on the US Pacific coast.”

For Ms Burdock, the potential of offshore wind in the US evidently has much to offer.

“Of course, it is not just a matter of constructing windfarms at sea”, she comments. “Constructing offshore windfarms occupies an extensive supply chain with numerous activities. Many

US companies are interested in, for example, constructing vessels for the offshore wind industry, but this requires huge investments and as soon as offshore wind really sets off in the US, this will generate the required amount of financial leeway to have these vessels constructed.

The New Jersey governor recently unveiled plans to develop what is being described as the United States’ first purpose-built offshore wind port. This project, valued at EUR 250 to EUR 350 million, is scheduled to begin next year. This project will result in a lot of work for many people.”

Act now

“Today,” Ms Burdock concludes, “the country may be economically in a low because of the COVID-19 crisis and low oil prices, though this does not mean that we should wait for the storm to pass. It will take time for offshore wind to really develop in the US but as we have seen in Europe, as soon as it really sets off, things can go very fast. Therefore, we should join forces and act now, so we are ready when the time is right to reap.” i. offshorewindus.org

rank Buijk is Project Manager Fabrication and Operations at Hillebrand and further elaborates on the prestigious project. “The Focus 30 crane that was recently constructed for Mammoet is a high-capacity pedestal crane. This specific crane, with a maximum capacity of 1,000t in this configuration, is going to be used during turnarounds at refineries. What makes the crane unique is that it is vertically selferecting. It can be built vertically up to a height of 150m, with a footprint of just 26x25m, without compromising stability and strength. For the assembly, only a small hydraulic crane is needed to lift the sections into place. As a result, it can be assembled in an area of 26x40m.”

The advantage of this configuration is evident for refineries. “Usually,” Mr Buijk continues, “pedestal cranes are assembled horizontally. This requires a lot of space.

shut down for security reasons, meaning an additional extension of the turnaround period. A lot of money and time can be saved with the Focus crane’s small assembly footprint.”

Four contractors

The construction of the crane was awarded

by Mammoet to four construction companies, of which Hillebrand constructed the main boom. Worth mentioning is Mammoet’s desire to have the main components constructed by Dutch contractors. Only the slewing ring was taken care of by German company Liebherr.

Hillebrand, as part of ASK Romein, has ample in-house expertise for constructing large (high-strength) steel structures such as bridges and steel constructions for plants and stadiums, and the company has also built an impressive track record in constructions for the offshore industry.

Complicated welding details

As Mammoet developed the crane in-house and took care of the entire design and engineering of the crane and its parts, Hillebrand was in this case only asked for the fabrication of the main boom components. “The input from Mammoet contained some complicated welding details, which forced us to look for an intelligent and practical implementation of those requirements. But things worked out fine. With the main boom, we have shown our skills in the delicate welding of S690 high-strength steel. On behalf of Mammoet, the work has been approved and certified

by Lloyd’s Register and a repair rate of less than 0.2% was achieved during fabrication, demonstrating the quality of our work”, states Mr Buijk proudly.

projects in lots of industries”, Mr Buijk voices. “Customers often come to us with a basic idea and a few requirements, and our specialist engineers and calculators, together with a dedicated project team, translate these into a completely executed project from scratch to a high-quality piece of work, including the verification by independent parties such as DNV Gl and Lloyds’ Register. Being part of ASK Romein gives us the opportunity to make use of all knowledge and experience available within the group. In our region, we can rely on many experienced partners as well. For example, the construction of the contact surfaces was crucial for the main boom segments, which is why we subcontracted the machining of these surfaces to one of our local partners.”

Aiming for more

With the Focus 30 project, Hillebrand is aiming for more. Mr Buijk concludes, “This crane is the first one in a series of a new concept for Mammoet. Mammoet is currently (editor: at the time of the interview early July) assembling and testing the crane at its Westdorpe terminal, after which it will be shipped to the US. When the Focus 30 has proven its abilities there, it is expected that more orders for this type of crane will follow. We are certainly eager to do the job again. On the other hand, being part of this project is also a valuable reference for projects in many other industries.” i. hillebrand.nu

Custom-built wind energy training facility MAERSK TRAINING AND BABCOCK MARINE TRAINING JOIN FORCES

SAFETY AND TECHNICAL TRAINING PROVIDER FOR WIND, OIL AND GAS AND MARITIME INDUSTRIES, MAERSK TRAINING IN THE UK, HAS announced an agreement with Babcock Marine Training, part of the Babcock International Group, to develop a custom-built wind energy training facility in Paisley.

T

he facility, which will launch Maersk Training into the Central Belt of Scotland, is the seventh facility which the organisation has opened across the UK, allowing the delivery of its market leading GWO (Global Wind Organisation) accredited courses for the renewables industry.

The modular training unit, an innovative and unique design using recycled and highly modified freight containers, offers quick deployment and a solution to take training capabilities to clients, removing the need for delegate travel offering a safer solution in the current climate of COVID-19.

Tried and tested

This on-site solution allows for a safer learning experience, promoting a positive atmosphere amongst learners allowing them to focus on enhancing their safety skills.

The concept has already been tried and tested for the renewables industry in the North West of England, providing delegate training on the Walney Wind Farm, and in Taiwan, where the modular unit was deployed to support the construction and development of a state-of-the-art wind energy training facility.

ydraulics power most industrial Work Class ROV’s primary functions including the thrusters, manipulators and auxiliary tooling. Electrical power is provided from the surface vessel to the ROV by means of an electrical ‘umbilical’ cable, which powers a hydraulic power unit (HPU), typically in the 150 to 250hp range. A proportional pressure relief cartridge is used to control the system’s pressure.

A paramount concern

Vehicle weight must be kept at a minimum, so smaller hydraulic actuators are chosen to provide the best power to weight ratio.

Specific hydraulic fluids are chosen for their tolerance to water ingression – an accepted inevitability – and the fluids used are often required to be environmentally friendly. ROVs are frequently required to remain submerged continuously for weeks to accomplish a task.

If a system failure occurs and recovery of the ROV is necessary, approximately eight hours ars required to raise and return to a depth of 4,000m. This does not include the additional time needed to diagnose and make repairs while the vehicle is on deck. During this time, the entire vessel and crew may be brought to a stand-still if the ROV’s task is a critical function. The cost of this downtime for vessel and crew can be hundreds of thousands of euros, which may be billed back to the ROV operations company if they are liable for interruptions in service. Additionally, the extremely limited availability of spare parts in the middle of the ocean makes it clear that reliability is a paramount concern.

Reliable control

Proportional spool valves with low hysteresis are most commonly used to control the precise movements of the ROV’s

manipulators (robotic arms). The manipulators are very powerful – able to lift in excess of 225kg in air – but must have very precise control to allow the ROV to turn the delicate handles on subsea equipment.

Wandfluh’s proportional directional control valves offer the ROV pilot reliable, delicate control with low hysteresis. The compact WDPFA03 or the NG6 proportional directional control valves WDPFA06 are most used for manipulator control and auxiliary tooling functions. Thrusters propel the ROV vertically and horizontally through the water. Up to eight thrusters, driven by individual hydraulic motors, are each controlled by a pair of proportional pressure reducing and relieving valves MVPPM33.

vessel must also have a Launch and Recovery System (LARS), high-tension winch and deck HPU. In addition to the reliability requirements, these components may also be located in corrosive and explosive environments. Wandfluh solenoids are rated for ten million cycles of service life.

Wandfluh solenoids for ROV applications are wound in-house and modified according to the subsea specification standards. The solenoid tube assembly is constructed of the highest quality, magnetic materials. This construction offers the strongest, evenly distributed magnetic field at lower power levels, resulting in reduced hysteresis.

Special modifications are made to the solenoid and housing to withstand the ambient pressure at depth, which can be in excess of 6,000psi. The electronics are also tested to ensure the ability to withstand pressure cycling, as the ROV repeatedly descends and returns to the surface.

Spool valves with special fluids

The inherent design of a spool valve allows leakage around the spool to reduce friction, improving response time and performance.

Due to tighter tolerances and precision machining, Wandfluh spool valves have lower leakage rates. Hence, lower leakage rates result in greater efficiency and fluid availability for other system functions. In turn, a smaller pump can be used providing additional cost savings. In recent years, industries are using more environmentally friendly hydraulic fluids. These fluids pose new challenges due to lower lubricity, reduced corrosion inhibitors and lower viscosity. Some of these fluids have very high water content, making the use of standard valves undesirable. To meet the new requirements, Wandfluh engineers researched new material options and

developed new construction techniques. The result of their efforts is the Z595 series of valves. The internal components of Z595 valves utilise the highest grades of stainless steel and are compatible with fire resistant HFC and HFA fluids, as well as water-glycol based fluids with water contents as high as 95%. Additionally, the engineers optimised the spool design to offer higher resistance to cavitation.

Corrosion protected valves

The solenoid valves aboard an ROV are typically housed in an oil-filled housing on top of the valve pack to prevent direct contact between the valves and water, however sometimes a design requires valves be directly exposed to the subsea environment. The ROV support equipment mounted to the deck of the surface vessel is also exposed directly to the harsh marine conditions. For valves directly in contact with these hostile conditions, Wandfluh offers special external coatings and stainless materials. These offerings are referred to as K8, K9 and K10, with an increasing level of protection respectively. K8 valves utilise a zinc-nickel coating on the valve and solenoid housing exterior and zinc coated fasteners.

K8 valves rate very highly (>500 hours) in the ISO 9227 salt spray test. This test creates a harsh corrosive environment to accelerate the formation of corrosion to help determine a material’s resistance to corrosion. K9 valves use high-grade AISI 316L, acidresistant, stainless steel for all external components except the solenoid housing which Ks zinc-nickel coated.

K9 valves have a superior rating n>1,000

Advancing US offshore wind R&D THE NATIONAL OFFSHORE WIND RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CONSORTIUM (THE CONSORTIUM) RECENTLY ANNOUNCED SELECTION of twelve projects for contract negotiation, completing its first solicitation for offshore wind research and development technology projects. The twelve awards totalling USD 10 million (EUR 8.5 million) will support a variety of research areas, including comprehensive US supply chain analyses, studying the impacts of offshore wind on the electric grid system, and innovations in anchoring structures.

“Today’s announcement builds on our collective commitment to drive down costs and make offshore wind a more a competitive alternative in generating energy.” Vincent Schellings, General Manager for Engineering & Product Development, Offshore Wind at GE Renewables, adds, “The National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium is a model for how you bring public and private sector interests together to advance our clean energy future. Through the Consortium, we’re able to harness critical funding resources and focus them on the right initiatives to advance the offshore industry and ultimately expand the US

supply chain in ways that attract new jobs and private sector investments.”

Competitive solicitation

The Consortium’s efforts were realised through a competitive solicitation which closed in December 2019. The awarded projects include: – Demonstration of shallow water mooring components for floating offshore wind turbines (ShallowFloat), Principle Power.

– Design and certification of taut-synthetic moorings for floating wind turbines, University of Maine.

Three pillars The National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium was established in 2018 when the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) was awarded USD 18.5 million (EUR 16 million) from the US Department of Energy (DOE). As the first federally funded public-private partnership focused on advancing offshore wind technology in the US, the Consortium, as a not-for-profit organisation, supports cost-effective and responsible development of offshore wind to maximise economic benefit to the US. Seventy-one gravity-based foundations for Fécamp offshore windfarm THE 497MW FÉCAMP OFFSHORE WINDFARM IN FRANCE HAS COMMENCED CONSTRUCTION. THE WIND POWER PROJECT IS THE THIRD French offshore windfarm to achieve financing. Éolien Maritime France (EMF), a consortium of EDF Renewables, Enbridge, and wpd, are the owners of the windfarm.

he project is located in the eastern part of La Manche (the English Channel), off the coast of Haute-Normandie, at approximately 13km northwest of the town of Fécamp. It will consist of 71 Siemens Gamesa 154-7.0MW direct drive wind turbines that will be installed on gravitybased foundations. The total project capital cost is estimated at EUR 2 billion, of which the majority will be financed through nonrecourse project level debt. Fécamp offshore wind project is under-pinned by a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), granted by the state in June 2018.

the design work, construction, and installation scope for the 71 concrete Gravity Based Structures (GBS) as foundation for the windfarm. The contract carries a total value of EUR 552 million, with a contract value split of 40.5% (Bouygues Travaux Publics), 40.5% (Saipem), and 19% (Boskalis). The 71 wind turbines will be connected to the gravity-based foundations installed on the seabed at depths between 25m and 30m. Within the consortium, consortium leader Bouygues and Saipem are tasked with the design, construction, and installation on the seabed of the gravitybased foundations with an individual weight of up to 5,000t required to provide the stability of the 7MW wind turbines. With this unique combination of expertise, the consortium partners are confident to successfully deliver and contribute to the French government’s energy mix diversification programme. Apart from the aforementioned consortium for the GBSs, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) will produce the 71 wind turbines at its new turbine plant in Le Havre, creating approximately 750 jobs. According to Siemens Gamesa, this new factory will be the first in the world to manufacture complete blades and nacelles under one roof. Chantiers de l’Atlantique, GE Grid Solutions, and SDI are responsible for the offshore substation. RTE is taking care of connecting the windfarm from the

substation to the coast and to Normandy’s electricity grid. The wind turbines will be assembled at the Port of Cherbourg. Works should be completed by the end of 2022.

The commissioning and operational start-up of the windfarm is planned for 2023. With one of them, the Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Ports (AYOP), we have planned a workshop for the other members in which we explained the entire offshore wind supply chain.”

he project championed new and proven technology for faster and more cost-effective completion of subsea pipelay and recorded a best average lay rate of 4.7km in 24 hours, with the rigid pipelay section completed within twenty days.

This lay rate is considerably faster than traditional welded pipelaying,allowing for the project to be completed at lower costs.

The pipeline system was developed specifically for the Tembikai NonAssociated Gas (TNAG) Development by Vestigo Petroleum, a wholly owned subsidiary of PETRONAS Carigali. It used NOV-Tuboscope Zap-Lok connectors to link the rigid pipeline via diverless connections.

Work included the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and pre-commissioning of the pipeline system and was delivered from Cortez Subsea’s office in Kuala Lumpur. Alasdair Cowie, Managing Director of Cortez Subsea, says, “We pioneer the latest developments to support our clients with

quicker, safer and cleaner techniques. We championed the Zap-Lok mechanical interference connector as a weld-free alternative to traditional pipelay. This is the first time this technology, which is much faster and more efficient, has been used offshore Malaysia.”

“In another industry first,” Mr Cowie continues, “the rigid pipe was connected to flexible risers using a Stinger Deployed Diverless Connector (SDDC), which we brought to the market in partnership with AFGlobal. Using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and a deployment frame, the connection is made from the pipeline to the host facility without the use of divers. A complete diverless approach reduces costs and increases safety for the team offshore. This mechanical alternative to welding results in a safer work environment, which is free from hot-work and radiography.”

OMEO Project (Reliable O&M decision tools and strategies for high LCoE reduction on Offshore wind) is an initiative funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme.

Its main objective is to reduce offshore O&M costs through the development of advanced monitoring systems and strategies, aiming to move from corrective and calendar-based maintenance to condition-based maintenance, by analysing the real behaviour of a wind turbine’s main components (WTGs). The innovations developed within the R&D work packages (WPs) will be tested in three use cases managed by the operators of the East Anglia One (UK), Teesside (UK), and Wikinger (Germany) windfarms. The use cases will

demonstrate the benefits achieved by the project and ensure that the project will be replicated at other wind farms.

Twelve key players

ROMEO is an industry-based consortium made up of twelve recognised and experienced key players from six different EU member states and one associated country, led by Iberdrola. The consortium includes large companies (Adwen, Bachmann, EDF, IBM Research Zurich, Minsait INDRA, Ramboll, Siemens Gamesa), SMEs (Laulagun Bearings, Uptime Engineering, and ZABALA Innovation Consulting) and the Strathclyde University, and will work jointly to benefit decision-

This project is awarded by the European Commission with a Horizon 2020 Programme Grant of EUR 10 million and a total budget of approximately EUR 16 million running for five years.

Progress

Significant progress has been made regarding the development of physical models that allow early fault detection, diagnosis and prognosis, and reduce the amount of failures. In addition, the connections for real-time data aggregation and integration have been tested, thus demonstrating the main operability of the project, from capturing data from windfarms to getting results in the O&M tool after having passed through the analytics cloud platform.

General assembly

The project’s main achievements were discussed during the annual General Assembly, which was digitally held on 3 and 4 June due to COVID-19 restrictions. All partners of ROMEO’s consortium gathered to analyse the results of their work in the different ongoing work packages. By sharing this information, the project team members were able to coordinate the next steps for the following months, which will be a new key period for the development of the project and its technologies.

In the virtual General Assembly, the partners discussed the results of the work packages in different technical sessions and meetings. One of the topics that arose was the analysis of the work made on package 5, led by MINSAIT, which has been completed.

The tasks were focused on the different data acquisition, processing elements, and protocols that address the needs of the overall system in order to cover the requirements identified in WP3 (wind turbine failure models for a running design) and WP4 (structural condition monitoring).

Another topic that was discussed by the project partners was the progression of the Pilot Tests work package, which deals with testing in the use cases managed by the three ROMEO windfarms (Teesside, East Anglia One, and Wikinger). The next step, which will be essential in the following phase of the EU initiative, is the development of the data analytics models for offshore windfarms O&M, as well as testing the failure models, the O&M platform, and the analytics ecosystem at the three demo sites to verify the technology in a real environment.

Successful exploitation

The first General Assembly day opened with a presentation and discussion about WP2, a work package that consists of the physical design of a new wind turbine diagnosis and prognosis solution, organised by Adwen, leader of the work package. The agenda’s other technical sessions followed, concluding with the training session preparation on WP9. WP9’s main goal is to ensure the successful exploitation and final impact on the wind power electric system of the technology and solutions that are being developed and demonstrated within the project.

After these sessions, the partners celebrated an Exploitation Board meeting that included an IP and Standardisation Observatory guided by ZABALA, one of the

partners. Lastly, the consortium had time for final comments and discussions.

The second day of the General Assembly started with a Technical Committee Meeting and was followed by six technical sessions driven by different partners of the project: IBM Research Europe, Ramboll, Uptime, Iberdrola, and Strathclyde University. The progress achieved in their work packages, which focus on wind turbine offline failure models for a running design, structural condition monitoring, O&M information management platform, pilot tests in United Kingdom and Germany, and impact assessment respectively, was presented to, and discussed with, the rest of the consortium. i. romeoproject.eu

he loading of the monopile foundation piles was handled by Liebherr’s heavyduty gantry crane type TCC 78000, inaugurated in 2019. The manufacturer of the monopiles is the offshore wind specialist EEW Special Pipe Constructions, also based in Rostock. After a long period of preparation, the first of a total of 72 monopile foundations for the windfarm at the Rostock overseas port were recently loaded from the quayside into the water by the crane and its experienced operating team.

Since 2008, EEW Special Pipe Constructions has been a pioneer in the production of monopiles, which are used as foundations for offshore wind turbines. In addition to cargo handling, Liebherr provides additional storage space of almost 9,000m² on its premises. Up to four monopiles can be stored here simultaneously and prepared for loading. In this case the terrain was used for the plug installation. For direct loading into the water, the otherwise hollow piles,

which are open at both ends, had to be sealed watertight in advance with specially constructed sealing caps, so-called plugs.

The sealing condition thus created enabled the monopile foundation piles, which are over 65m long and weigh up to 800t, to float.

Denmark’s largest offshore windfarm

After loading into the water, a deep-sea tugboat transports the monopile foundations towards the windfarm, which is located about 15km off the Danish coast.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE LONGEST SUBSEA POWER CABLE IN THE WORLD RECENTLY PASSED ITS HALFWAY POINT AND ACHIEVED A MAJOR ENGINEERING FEAT TO ENABLE NORWAY’S ZERO CARBON HYDRO ENERGY TO BE SHARED WITH THE UK.

N

orth Sea Link, a joint venture project between National Grid and Norwegian system operator Statnett, is a EUR 2 billion Interconnector project. When wind power production in the UK is high, Norway will be able to import power at a lower price than in the Nordic market, helping conserve the water in the country’s hydropower reservoirs. At times when there is little wind in the UK, it can then import Norwegian hydropower at a lower price than in the UK while helping to ensure the security of power supplies.

North Sea Link will connect the electricity transmission systems between the UK and Norway via 720km of subsea cables. The interconnection will be established through two parallel high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables that will run from Kvilldal in South West Norway to East Sleekburn on the Northumberland coast, passing through Norwegian and British waters. They will be buried between 1m and 3m into the seabed using a range of installation techniques suited to the seabed conditions. A desktop cable routing study and detailed offshore survey was undertaken for the optimal route, and an Environmental Report was prepared. The seabed survey was carried out using non-intrusive methods (geophysical) and intrusive methods

(geotechnical) to provide information on the seabed type, for both engineering and environmental purposes.

Custom-made platform

Before being able to lay the cable in Norway, the team first had to tackle manoeuvring the cable through a lake, which cannot be accessed by the size of vessels usually required for cable laying. Instead, the team transported materials piece by piece to build their own custom-made floating platform. The operation is the first of its kind on this scale in Norway and the construction of the platform had an average of 25 people working on it daily over the course of eleven days. This unique operation in Suldalsvatnet marks the start of the cable laying on the Norwegian side. Working at depths of up to 210m, the laying of the 2.8km parallel subsea cables was executed from a 43 x 15m platform – equivalent to the size of two tennis courts. The equipment required to lay the cable was then installed on the platform and within twelve hours, 150t of cable was loaded on board. The platform held all necessary equipment that is usually found on offshore cable laying vessels. Electrical transformers

Another major milestone in the North Sea Link Interconnector project was reached on the UK side of the project earlier this year with the delivery of seven new electrical transformers from the Port of Blyth to the Converter Station site at Cambois in Northumberland. The transformers, weighing approximately 220t each, were manufactured in Sweden by ABB Transformers Ludvika and shipped to Blyth. The transformers are sophisticated electrical equipment that plays a crucial role in the renewable energy sharing project.

Each one changes the voltage of electricity by converting the alternating current from one voltage to another, so that electricity can be delivered to customers on both sides of the North Sea. Due to the size and weight of the transformers, specialist

transformers will play a huge role in transporting clean, green renewable energy between the UK and Norway.”

The five-week e-learning courses will be delivered globally, as will conventional classroom-based training by SeaFlo’s team of subsea and asset management operations engineers, who have more than 200 years’ industry experience between them. The programme combines e-learning and classroom work along with dynamic virtual subsea marine operations simulation training. The animated real-life scenarios have been produced by GRi Simulations, to provide a safe environment for the learner to practice and achieve desired learning outcomes. GRi’s specialist software uses full 3D modelling of subsea wells and client specific field development architecture built into the mobile simulators. SeaFlo is currently using this simulation technology to train local national field technicians and engineers for a client in West Africa to support learning around subsea commissioning and life of field operations.

The technology for the Marine Professionals Chartership Progression Training will be available at strategic global marine training centres via industry partnership agreements from September.

Webtool has developed an autonomous subsea resettable valve for installation and use with a charged hydraulic fluid store. Easily activated by a steel wire rope line, the valve activation system is designed for applications where autonomous operation is needed in the event of an emergency. The stainless steel valve activator comprises a ball valve, spring detention cartridge set to the appropriate activation force needed to allow the valve to open, and valve activating lever that also functions as a removable rod arm. Charged with hydraulic fluid, when activated the rod arm rotates through 90° causing the activator’s ball valve to rotate releasing stored hydraulic fluid, when fully open the rod arm is released.

The valve activation device can be installed either left or right-handed.
