HELLO TO YOU ALL AND WELCOME TO THIS ISSUE! FIRST LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF: MY NAME IS RON VAN UUM AND I AM YOUR NEW EDITOR OF OFFSHORE INDUSTRY. FOR the last seventeen years or so I worked for ModuSpec Engineering and, after it was taken over in 2008, for Lloyd’s Register Energy – Drilling in Serooskerke, the Netherlands. During my employment at these companies I learned a lot about oil and gas drilling rigs (both offshore and on land), drill ships, FPSOs, QHSE matters and, most importantly, the people working in the oil and gas drilling industry, be it on land or at sea.

It is a very special kind of industry and I have learned to appreciate the hard work that’s being done in it.

In my new capacity of editor of Offshore Industry I will certainly try to continue expressing my enthusiasm about the offshore industry and to inform you on everything that’s going on there.

In this issue you will find some interesting articles indeed. First of all, there’s Havyard’s delivery of the Esvagt Faraday, the second Havyard 832 SOV wind farm service vessel to be delivered to Esvagt. We also have articles on Brosa’s investment in high-power calibration technology and, as our Ship Report, the christening of the Kroonborg, Royal Wagenborg’s new offshore maintenance support vessel.

In particular I’d like to draw your attention to the items of Trelleborg’s launching of an easy-installation DBM clamp and HMS Offshore’s construction of a gas compression module for the GDF Suez E17a-A platform working in the Dutch North Sea. Further, please take a look at our article on the DolWin gamma, the fourth HVDC platform built by Nordic Yards – and last but by no means least, read all about HFG’s construction of the jacket Gina Krog, the largest jacket ever built by Heerema.

Royal IHC Launches Sapura Jade Royal IHC has successfully named and launched the 550t pipe-laying vessel Sapura Jade in a ceremony at the company’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, the Netherlands. Earlier on the same day, the naming ceremony of its sister vessel Sapura Ônix also took place at the same

location. The Sapura Jade was ordered by Sapura Navegação Marítima, a joint venture between SapuraKencana and Seadrill. She is the fourth in a series of five fully integrated pipe-laying vessels that will be completely designed, engineered and built by IHC.

Njord Odin Completes Sea Trials BMT Nigel Gee’s Njord Odin successfully completed her sea trials. She is the first of a series of advanced 26m wind farm support vessels (WSV) for Njord Offshore. Developed from BMT’s well-established range of WSVs, these are the largest BMT-designed vessels built to date. Built by Strategic Marine, Njord Odin is also the first to be fitted with a quadruple installation of the Volvo Penta IPS system, with the forward-facing/twin counterrotating propellers and individually steerable pods under the hull.

NEWS IN BRIEF Wintershall Strengthens Position Wintershall is stepping up its activities in the southern North Sea. In addition to an extensive drilling campaign in the Netherlands, the UK and Denmark, the company intends to take its natural gas and crude oil discoveries into the production phase swiftly. “We believe in the on-going potential of the southern North Sea and are hereby making our contribution to securing Europe’s energy supply by efficiently developing the assets we have close to home,” explains Robert Frimpong, Managing Director of Wintershall Noordzee.

Well Stimulation Vessel Conversion IRClass has recently completed the survey and certification of Greatship Ramya during its conversion from offshore supply vessel (OSV) to a well stimulation vessel. The Classification for Well Stimulation Vessels requires meeting extremely stringent norms and compliance with multiple codes such as IBC Code, IGC Code, IMDG Code and Offshore Standards, in addition to the SOLAS and MARPOL conventions. Due to the tight delivery timelines, Schlumberger chose to have the conversion done under single class of IRClass.

Ceona & Seaweld form Partnership Ceona has entered into a joint venture with Seaweld Engineering which will act as a strategic partner for offshore deep-water construction projects in Ghana.

The partnership allows Ceona to extend its operations in West Africa and build upon the success it has already achieved in the region. The agreement will see Seaweld Engineering supporting Ceona in delivering its full line of products and expertise in Ghana.

Gemini Offshore Wind Farm Grouting Project

FoundOcean has been awarded the contract to grout the 150 monopile foundations for the 600MW Gemini Offshore Wind Farm, on behalf of main contractor Van Oord. The project will be the first to use MasterFlow 9800, a revolutionary new material jointly developed by FoundOcean and BASF. MasterFlow 9800 possesses a unique combination of features that makes it ideally placed to meet the specific requirements of the project; it combines high-strength/ low-shrinkage properties with the ability to be stored and transported in bulk silos.

Cheapest Electricity Ever Generated from UK Offshore Wind Farm Mainstream Renewable Power announced that its 448MW offshore wind farm in Scotland will use two recently launched technologies. These are set to decrease costs, reduce construction and operational risk, improve safety and ultimately provide the cheapest electricity ever produced by a UK offshore wind farm. The technologies include the new Offshore Transmission Module (OTM) by Siemens Energy Management Division and High Wind’s Boom Lock System to be deployed

by GeoSea for wind turbine component installation at sea.

NEWS IN BRIEF Christening of Tess The chistening of Van Laar Maritime’s multi-purpose support vessel Tess took place in April. Van Laar Maritime came to Shipyard Trico to build the first vessel of their new fleet and to be the main contractor of the project. The ship is completely Dutch – the hull was built in Vlissingen, then shipped to Rotterdam and finished at Shipyard Trico. The vessel has a total length of 37.5 metres and a width of 8.70 metres.

Survivex Secures Significant Contract Win Survivex has signed a contract with Hercules Offshore for the provision of a fully outsourced Training Management Service (TMS). The contract, estimated to be worth in excess of GBP 500,000 annually, is the first to be secured by the newly established Survivex TMS department. The longterm agreement will commence immediately as Hercules prepares for operations within the North Sea. The TMS team will be responsible for producing a comprehensive training matrix, identifying skills gaps and creating individual training plans for Hercules employees.

Africa-focussed proprietary investment firm L.A.T Cleveson (LATC) has signed an order with Damen Shipyards Group for the supply of two PSV 3300 Platform Supply Vessels and two FCS 5009 Fast Supplier Vessels. This landmark transaction will bring the nextgeneration Damen PSVs to the offshore industry of Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea for the first time. The company’s aim is to set new standards in the West African offshore oil sector through acquiring modern and technologically advanced assets to serve international and local clients operating in the region.

On 19 March, Hoogvliet Offshore delivered an eight-person turnkey living quarter to HSM Steel Structures for the A18 platform of Petrogas Exploration & Production Netherland, which will be new-built in Schiedam, the Netherlands.

The topside of the unit is built by HSM Steel Structures and Hoogvliet Offshore is also completing the architectural outfitting for the platform.

The UK can generate as much as 8TWh per year, or enough electricity to fuel 2 million households. Project Success Paves Way for Seajacks SEAJACKS

Seajacks completed an O&M project supporting gearbox changes at the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm in the UK North Sea. The company provided specialist technicians and tooling and lifting equipment for the project. Seajacks worked closely with Statkaft in all stages of planning and preparation for the gearbox exchange in two turbines. The collaboration between the two companies ensured the delivery and installation of replacement components went smoothly and according to schedule. This is the first time that a major component has been exchanged on a Siemens turbine without Siemens managing the project. Seajacks says that the success of the project has helped pave the way for it to deliver independent major components replacements for out-of-warranty wind farms. i. www.seajacks.com

by Dong Energy to execute the export cable landfall installation for Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm in Liverpool Bay. The work consists of two 600m duct installations, both intertidal and onshore, between Rhyl and Prestatyn on the Welsh coastline. The joint venture will be executing the project by means of the trenchless horizontal directional drilling (HDD) method. FOR THE PAST MONTHS, THE SKYLINE VLISSINGEN-OOST, THE CITY’S PORTAL ZONE HAS FEATURED THE PROFILE OF AN ENORMOUS STRUCTURE: THE GINA KROG JACKET. THIS GIANT jacket – more than 142 metres in length with a footprint of 60 by 50 metres at the base and 40 x 30 metres at the top, and with a weight of circa 17,500 tonnes – is the largest jacket ever constructed by Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG) in Vlissingen.

HFG Vlissingen Yard Director Remco van Gilst says, “For Valemon, Statoil asked us to design a 9,000t lift jacket based on the boundary conditions of the field and its platform. They asked us to ‘come up with a concept, come up with a schedule, come up with a budget’. They were pleased with our proposal and put it through to tender. We won that award and executed the EPC contract successfully. After that, they went

out to tender on the Gina Krog field and again we won.”

Complex Engineering

The project award came in February 2012.

It was followed by an extended period of engineering, carried out by HFG’s in-house specialists based at the company’s Zwijndrecht location.

so we have to get things right. During the launch operation we tilt the barge, give the jacket a push and it goes into the water. You need to know it’s coming back up again, so you need to know how much buoyancy you have, where the centre of buoyancy is, where the centre of gravity is, how much the jacket weighs. You have to be very accurate, so the iterative design process takes a little longer.”

That being the case, it was August 2013 before HFG could begin to carry out the procurement scope of the contract, ordering the steel and other materials ready for the construction to commence.

Years in the Making

HFG’s Vlissingen site is the yard of choice for jacket fabrication. A 400-metre-long quay suitable to all types of barges and unrestricted North Sea access, coupled with the required available yard space, sees to that. Another advantage, as Mr Van Gilst points out, is that the yard has an enviable portfolio of successful past projects to its name.

Load-ou

The load-out of the jacket took place on 28 March, which gave HFG plenty of time to carry out sea-fastening and detailed completion tasks before the arrival of the installation vessel – sister company Heerema Marine Contractors’ Hermod under separate contract to Statoil.

“Normally we would expect to have around two weeks between load-out and sail-away,” says Mr Van Gilst.

Early Production

The jacket is being installed in advance of the topsides, which is being constructed in Korea. Once the jacket is in place, Statoil will mobilise a drilling rig which, with a cantilever over the jacket, will drill a number of wells through it.

“This means that, once the topsides is in place, and the hook-up is finalised, the platform will be able to handle production whilst further drilling continues.”

To facilitate this, a part of HFG’s scope was the fabrication of a temporary, dedicated drilling module, which will be located on the wellhead of the jacket until the installation of the topsides.

A2SEA COMPLETE TURBINE INSTALLATION AT UK WIND FARM

Westermost Rough RECENTLY, A2SEA HAS INSTALLED THE FINAL TURBINE AT THE WESTERMOST ROUGH OFFSHORE WIND FARM. THE PROJECT HAS INVOLVED THE COMPANY USING SOME VERY INNOVATIVE technology in order to handle the scale of turbines at the wind farm. The project saw A2Sea using their new vessel, Sea Challenger, with her 900t crane, for the first time.

W

estermost Rough is located in the UK North Sea – one of the country’s Round 2 projects.

It is situated 8km off the Yorkshire coast, just north of Hull and ABP’s HumberPort. It contains 35 Siemens 6MW turbines installed by Sea Challenger.

One at a Time

The wind farm is a joint venture between Dong Energy, who has a 50 percent interest in the operation, and its partners Marubeni Corporation and the UK Green Investment Bank, each of which has a 25 percent stake.

The turbines cover a total area of 35m2 and can generate enough electricity to power around 150,000 households.

The large size of the turbines requires a blade rotor 154m in diameter and weighing some 74t.

It is practically impossible to transport and install something of this scale pre-assembled, which makes single blade assembly the method of choice.

Tooled Up

For this purpose, A2Sea has been using a sophisticated tool from Siemens Wind Power that enables single blade assembly at higher wind speeds with greater safety.

“It’s impressive looking,” says Westermost Rough Project Manager Morten S. Pedersen. “And it works just as impressively too.”

Until Siemens developed the tool, the lifting approach and tools available for single blade assembly capped the process at wind speeds of between 8 and 10m/s. With this latest piece of technology from Siemens, however, A2Sea has been able to lift at speeds of up to 12m/s.

Tip, Turn & Swivel

The new tool, in theory, can be used in winds with sustained speeds of up to 14m/s and in gusts of up to 19m/s. So far, however, the safe working limit is a rather more modest 12m/s.

In the near future, the various parties supporting the development of the tool – A2Sea, Dong Energy and Siemens – hope to achieve as much as 14m/s and are working together towards meeting this goal.

The tool fastens and tightens the cables fully automatically, controlled safely from the ship’s deck.

It can turn, tip and swivel, lifting blades from any position on the vessel. It can also tip and swivel blades for precise alignment with the hub.

Offshore Installation in Disguise

“[It] resembles the claw of a giant metal robot,” says Mr Pedersen. “In fact, we joke that it looks like something out of the movie… Transformers!

And it is every bit as effective as you might imagine a Transformer to be when it wants to get something done.

“It’s a… specially developed mechanism that can easily lift the 75m single blade of a Siemens 6MW wind turbine. The tool weighs… 78t and [is] 14m long and 8m high.”

Competing tools are beginning to emerge, however, to date none use the same approach as this one. Other examples require significantly increased lifting height, with lower operating wind speeds. They also often necessitate increased dimensions in onboard infrastructure.

Enter a New Challenger

The Westermost Rough project saw A2Sea’s new vessel, Sea Challenger, make her debut appearance. The new vessel is almost identical to her sister vessel, Sea Installer.

Sea Challenger, however, has a crane that can lift up to 1,000t more than Sea Installer.

The increased lifting capacity aims to meet the trend towards increasingly large turbines. Sea Challenger has been optimised to operate at depths of up to 60m, depending on tide and penetration. This capacity makes her perfectly suited to the installation of upcoming wind projects in northern Europe.

Keeping it Clean

Westermost Rough’s location has been specially selected to minimise any environmental impact its operation may have. As well as being located in an area not deemed to be key habitat for protected species, there is no regular sea mammal

activity in the surroundings.

Additionally, the offshore wind farm is in proximity to several onshore wind turbines, thus any visual and sound pollution impacts are contained.

The site has also been selected in order to mitigate against potential collisions in nearby shipping lanes.

Installation Execution

Upon the installation of the 35th turbine, Brian Bendixen, Master on board the Sea Challenger, said, “The installation of the last turbine on Westermost Rough went according to plan. Havyard’s Second Wind Farm Vessel ON 26 MARCH 2015, ESVAGT TOOK DELIVERY OF THE NEW BUILT 119 ESVAGT FARADAY, THE SECOND OF THREE HAVYARD 932 SOV WIND FARM VESSELS FROM Havyard Ship Technology AS. The first, new build 118 Esvagt Froude, was delivered in the middle of February of this year. The German company Siemens Wind Power has hired both vessels on long-term contracts to service their offshore wind farms.

T

he Esvagt Froude is currently on a fiveyear contract for Siemens and will service the wind farm Baltic 2 in the Baltic Sea. The Esvagt Faraday is scheduled to be on a ten-year contract and will service the Butendiek project in the northern part of the German sector of the North Sea. The feedback from the first wind farm service vessel Esvagt Froude is good, and the shipping company and the operator are looking forward to putting the Esvagt Faraday into operation.

The contract for the first two Havyard 832 SOV wind farm service vessels was entered into in July 2013. In addition, Esvagt has also ordered an extra Havyard 832 SOV from Havyard. This vessel will be under contract for Dudgeon wind farm, which is operated

by Statoil.

Development and Testing

The Havyard 832 SOV design is a novel type in what is a new market for Havyard. The basis

for developing a new design of this kind is the wide-ranging expertise and experience Havyard has in designing and building advanced offshore and fishing vessels.

“There will always be challenges in connection with the development and production of new products, which was also the case when we built the first wind farm vessel,” says Lasse Stokkeland, head of Havyard Ship Technology AS. “The advantage of being in control of both the design and building of new types of vessels is that it gives us an opportunity to test new solutions and identify any changes that need to be made before other vessels are built, either at our own yard or at an external yard. Although the second vessel followed hot on the heels of the prototype, a lot was learned during the building of the first vessel, which was a great advantage during the execution of the second project.

We are very well equipped to build even more ships for this exciting market, or to

provide support to other yards that want to build our design,” concludes Stokkeland.

adapted to meet the requirements in the assignment description from Statoil for Dudgeon offshore wind farm. The ship’s main job will be to provide accommodation for and carry personnel and equipment for the performance of service and maintenance on offshore windmills. Among other things, this means that the ship has a specialised gangway system that makes it possible to transfer personnel from the ship to the windmills in harsh weather conditions.

Further, emphasis has been placed on good facilities and comfort for the personnel on board, the ability to stay in position by the windmills, and environmental-friendly and economical transit between onshore bases and offshore windmills. The Havyard 832 SOV design has a fore ship designed to have good properties in both calm and rough seas, and a stern with twin skegs that improve the performance of the hull and propellers as well as their operating economy.

Havyard Group and Fafnir Offshore won the Environmental Award for new build 126, a Havyard 833 WE ICE platform supply vessel with hybrid battery power.

The Esvagt Froude can carry a cargo of up to 2,500 tons on deck. With a deck area of up to 900 m², the SOV provides 450 m² of deck space to house workshop facilities and six 20ft containers for spare parts. Its cargo deck can accommodate standard 20ft containers for necessary spare parts for wind turbine maintenance.

Environmental Award for Havyard and Fafnir

On 18 February 2015 Havyard Group and Fafnir Offshore were presented with the Environmental Award at the annual Offshore Support Journal Conference in London. They won the award for new build 126, a Havyard 833 WE ICE platform supply vessel with hybrid battery power that Havyard is building for Fafnir. “I am pleased to have won the Environmental Award in London together with Havyard,” says Steingrimur Erlingsson, founder/owner of Fafnir.

In the eyes of the company it is profitable to invest in R&D that aims at environmentally friendly products. The unit is the second offshore vessel that Fafnir has ordered from Havyard. Fafnir was also the first to order Havyard’s new WE design called Polarsyssel, which was developed for Fafnir and delivered from Havyard’s yard in Leirvik in Sogn in September 2014.

The combination of the Havyard 833 WE ICE hull design and hybrid battery power has resulted in a PSV that will use 30 - 40 percent less fuel than traditional PSVs during certain operations. “ n many ways this is a typical gas compression module,” Mr Fleumer begins.

“It depends on the geology of the field of course, but typically, after five or six years of production, the natural gas pressure of a field drops to the extent that a compressor is required to maintain production levels.”

Getting Underway

E17a-A is a field with which HSM Offshore is particularly well acquainted, having built the platform for GDF back in 2009. “This is a nice project for us,” says Mr Fleumer. “GDF has been a regular customer for the past 10 to 15 years. We originally built this platform, so it’s rewarding for us to be awarded this contract.”

The contract award came in July 2014 and the module is scheduled for delivery exactly one year on in July this year.

“We’ve received the skid with the gas engines and compressors already mounted.

What we are building is a large box. The main components in this are the drivers – in this case engines driven by gas produced at the field. The engines drive the compressors, which will draw gas from the well and push it into the pipeline. That’s putting things simply but, basically, this is the principle of gas compression.”

Right Size for the Job

This particular module features two 1,210kW engines produced by GE Energy’s

Waukesha brand. The two compressors, which in this case are reciprocating, are supplied by Arial and can handle a maximum of 83,000m3 gas per hour.

The completed structure will be 20 x 10 x 8m in dimension and weigh a total of 330t.

Mr Fleumer says that modules can vary considerably in size.

“There are large differences. Two years ago we completed a compression module for Talisman in the UK that weighed 1,600t. Last year we did one for Shell Leman that weighed very close to 4,000t.

The size disparity often relates to the module being required to compress for more than one field – in the case of the Shell project, there are multiple fields connected to the Leman complex.”

Maintaining the Flow

Having received the skid, HSM Offshore built a second level with room for all the connecting piping, electrical panels, electrical enclosures and some of the gas filtration and treatment facilities, including cooling equipment.

The company will complete the module prior to delivery. “We are gradually building up the entire module so that it is fully operational when we hand it over to the client,” states Mr Fleumer.

Fits Into Place

As is common practice in the industry, the E17a-A platform design pre-empted the future need for a compression module.

“The platform arrangement allows for the installation of the module,” says Mr Fleumer. “There is space available and an allowance of weight.”

Once HSM Offshore has completed the construction of the module, they will hand it over to the client’s transportation company at the HSM yard in the Port of Rotterdam.

“Our contractual delivery will be the point when we hand the module over for transportation. Our facilities feature a loadout quay with open access to the North Sea. With 10m water depth we can handle all kinds of vessels and barges, which ensures flexibility for the client.” i. www.hsm.nl

THE NATURE OF THE WORK, AND THE LOCATIONS IN WHICH IT IS PERFORMED, REQUIRE TOTAL FOCUS AND OBSERVATION OF THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE STANDARDS. WITHOUT STRICT OBSERVANCE OF SAFETY standards, there is always the possibility of personal injury and lost-time related incidents. Additionally, as Gijs Noordam of Ten Holter Noordam lawyers explains exclusively for Offshore Industry, a lack of focus on QHSE-related matters can lead to legal challenges.

I

n Dutch case law one will not find many decisions that deal with the offshore industry. Are there no incidents or disputes or are these settled amicably between the parties? Or are there other reasons? The offshore industry is highly focused on risk management, thereby preventing incidents as much as possible and in my experience the industry favours dispute resolution by arbitration as arbitral awards are not made public. There is also a simple legal reason that I will illustrate in this article.

Trip in Time

I’d like to take the reader back to 2006 and around 100nm off the Dutch coast. Picture an oil production platform that is connected to a nearby underwater tanker mooring and loading system (TMLS).

A TMLS requires regular maintenance so the platform owner commissioned a specialised diving company to do the job.

The diving company chartered a supply ship with a specialised crew to support the divers.

In preparation for the operation, the platform owner issued a Safety Management System Bridging Document, with a description of the work to be done, the risks involved and the procedures that had to be observed. This was discussed in an onshore risk assessment meeting with the diving company without, however, a representative of the supply ship

attending. When the vessel put to sea the operation was discussed again, now with the vessel’s master present. He was requested to read the document, but failed to do so.

Don’t Shoot the Messenger

Upon arrival on site, the divers’ messenger line got stuck in the vessel’s thrusters, causing damages to the vessel’s propulsion as well as demurrage. The risk of this occurring was especially highlighted in the document and the risk assessment meetings. A further warning had been sent to the vessel during transit to the site and was presented to the bridge.

The supply vessel owners sued the platform owner, bypassing the diving company as its contractual partner under the charter agreement, claiming damages on grounds of negligence. The platform owner was blamed for giving insufficient warning of the special risks of the site and the properties of the messenger line, the more so since the platform owner had been aware of similar incidents with the messenger line in the past.

War on Two Fronts

Consequently, the platform owner was faced with two legal challenges: how to fend off a claim from a party with whom it had had no contract – it contracted with the diving company

and not with the vessel owners – and how to rely on the exclusions and limitations of liability of the charter party. It was for those very reasons that the vessel owners had chosen to challenge the platform owner and not its contractual partner under that charter, the diving company.

Cool Reasoning

The District Court found in favour of the vessel owners but the Court of Appeal reversed that decision. The vessel owner took the matter to the Dutch Supreme Court, claiming that the Court of Appeal had legally erred. The Supreme Court ruled coolly that the Appeal Court had done a good job, without giving any further reasoning. This the Supreme Court can do if, in its opinion, the objections against the lower court’s decision do not need to be rebutted in the interest of justice.

If one reads the Appeal Court’s decision, one has to concur.

The charter party contained a Himalaya clause on grounds of which the platform owner was granted the same umbrella of exclusions and limitations of liability as the diving company.

One of these exclusions is the Knock for Knock clause. Its origin can be traced to a division of liability that insurers introduced for pile up traffic accidents. Each insurer will pay the damages for the car(s) it covers, without recourse to the other cars and their insurers.

Sufficient Warning

The Knock for Knock clause is also the standard in the offshore industry – see for instance the BIMCO Supply Time.

caused wholly or partly by the act, neglect or default of the other party. In view of the risks involved in the offshore industry, this is a comprehensible division of liability that is easily insured.

In itself, the vessel owner recognised the Knock for Knock principle that would park the responsibility for the damage with itself, but claimed that, under the circumstances of the case, the platform owner could not, in good faith, rely on this.

It claimed that the platform owner did not sufficiently warn for the risk of the messenger line becoming entangled in the vessel’s thrusters. The Court of Appeal however found that the platform owner had gone out of its way to warn all concerned of this risk and that, actually, the vessel was to be blamed for not picking up the warning. The vessel master had chosen not to attend safety meetings or to read the various risk assessment documents. The master of the Supply Vessel testified before the court that he was “no believer of these meetings”. Consequently, the supply vessel and its insurer were left with responsibility for the damage.

Don’t Bow to Pressure

Much has improved in risk assessment and safety awareness in the offshore industry since 2006. Nevertheless, commercial and other pressures may always cause people to try shortcuts, resulting in loss or damage that exceeds by far a simple messenger line getting stuck in a thruster. i. www.tenholternoordam.nl

Kroonborg OFFSHORE PIONEER

he Kroonborg concept was born from Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) and Shell UK awarding Royal Wagenborg a contract for a new type of vessel. Designed and completely built at Royal Niestern Sander shipyard in the Netherlands, the Kroonborg will support offshore operations transporting offshore maintenance and service crews to and from their workplace in the North Sea for an initial period of ten years.

Service crews can work on 14-day shifts and the vessel is able to serve multiple offshore platforms on one route. Theo Klimp, Fleet Director of Royal Wagenborg, explains that the vessel will enable the vessel’s owners to execute work programmes on production platforms “more efficiently, safely and costeffectively”.

Providing maintenance personnel living on the vessel access to fixed or floating offshore structures is a motioncompensated offshore gangway, the Ampelmann – from the Dutch company of the same name. This fully integrated access system will also be used to transfer small cargo and equipment. The Ampelmann consists of a self-stabilising hexapod with six hydraulic cylinders, which compensate the motion of waves up to 2.5m. The gangway has a maximum operational length of 22m.

Lifting operations to transfer equipment from the deck of the vessel onto a platform can be executed safely with a small and compact 3D-neutral crane – the Barge Master T40. With a 5t @ 20m or 15t @ 10m capacity, the crane compensates roll, pitch and heave motions with a system of five vertically mounted cylinders, which are placed between the vessel and the crane.

Designed for minimum downtime in tough North Sea conditions, the Barge Master unit is capable of transferring equipment to and from a platform and the deck of the vessel in wave heights up to 2m.

Start Me Up At the heart of the new design is a package of ‘cold start-up’ (CSU) and intervention equipment installed in the vessel that will enable wells to be restarted more efficiently than is currently possible.

A special tank installation, containing six different chemicals, will be situated below deck. “The vessel will be certified to carry all of the usual chemicals an offshore vessel might transport, but it will also be able to transport very specialised chemicals used in interventions on a well,” Mr Klimp explains.

“It will also have a dedicated area for all the pumps and frequency converters required to supply chemicals to a platform, and it will be certified for working with the very high pressures that a cold start up on a live well entails.”

Niestern Sander and Wagenborg turned to PG Marine for the CSU package, which will draw heavily on PG Marine’s experience with similar below-deck solutions for IMR vessels. The below-deck package will include pumping, injection and control systems, in addition to a nitrogen generator, umbilicals and hose-reels. Because the tanks are located below decks, the deck space measures 500m2 offering ample space for other maintenance equipment.

Predictive DP Building a new design is always a question of combining the forces of designer and yard. In Kroonborg’s case, the Netherlandsbased Conoship International supported Royal Niestern Sander with the design. They focused on determining the optimal main dimensions and hull form to minimise the impact on the environment. Designer and yard also teamed up to achieve the best seakeeping behaviour while meeting all stability requirements.

The Kroonborg’s hull design and dynamicpositioning (DP) system produce a vessel that is unmatched in energy efficiency and makes considerable fuel savings possible.

Designed to reduce fuel consumption, Kongsberg’s GreenDP secures the vessel, allowing it to stay within user-defined operational boundaries. This new approach is based on forecasting the vessel’s motion, rather than acting on present conditions, using a method called ‘nonlinear model predictive control’. This optimises the predicted vessel offset against the use of thrusters dramatically lowering peak loads. www. o f f s h o r e - i n d u s t r y.eu

Studies have shown this minor sacrifice in station-keeping accuracy pays off with a fuel reduction of about 20 percent.

Owner Royal Wagenborg calls its new asset a clean and green vessel – something demonstrated further by the fact that by deploying the vessel reduces helicopter transfers by up to 600 flights a year, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. The company also has a strict ‘zero-dumping philosophy’. Strengthening the green credentials even further is the fact that the Kroonborg as world’s first offshore vessel sails on GTL fuel, a liquid fuel made of natural gas: resulting in fewer emissions than conventional fuels for vessels.

By combining such sustainable principles with innovative design, Royal Wagenborg’s Kroonborg looks well set to crack on with the task at hand – executing safe and efficient offshore operations for NAM and Shell UK for the decade ahead.

Crane Focus Over the last few months, the Netherlands-based Ship Technics have been busy with the electrical installation of the Kroonborg’s motioncompensated crane. “We were brought in to install the crane’s control systems by Lagendijk, the crane manufacturer,” comments Ship Technics Director Daaf Kooman. Although Ship Technics is an established name in marine electrical engineering and automation, this was the first time the company had worked with Bargemaster. “This crane contract was completed smoothly with all three parties enjoying a cooperative working relationship.”

Ship Technics started the electrical installation at Lagendijk’s facilities and completed them on board the Kroonborg while the vessel was still at Royal Niestern Sander’s yard in Delfzijl. Mr Kooman says that the feedback received by Royal Wagenborg has been positive: “Although this is a very complex crane, it is still easy to use and it is also very comfortable.” i. www.shiptechnics.nl

lstom placed the order for DolWin gamma with Nordic Yards in February 2013. The yard commenced construction towards the end of 2014 and the platform will be installed in 2017. It will form the core of the grid connection of the DolWin 3 Offshore Wind Farm, where it will convert 900MW of electricity from AC to DC. After conversion the platform will transmit the power to the Dorpen onshore convertor station, 163km away, where it will be converted back to AC ready for supply to end users.

Full Scope

DolWin gamma marks the first time that Nordic Yards will oversee the entire process from conception to installation, as opposed to just the construction processes.

“In the tradition of building specialised seagoing vessels, Nordic Yards has successfully performed all design phases of the project. This time, the entire value chain, consisting of detailed design, procurement, fabrication, assembly, T&I and

commissioning is in one hand – Nordic Yards’,” says Mr Schulte.

He says that this means that the team can respond more directly to any challenges that may arise.

“With our overall responsibility for DolWin gamma, we are better and earlier prepared for the vital offshore T&I activities.

Naturally, this is also partly attributable to successful installation and handover of two Nordic Yard platforms previously.”

Complex Construction

Designing and building a platform such as this is certainly a complex project. The mass and volume resulting with the structures 900MW capacity, coupled with just 27m of water depth poses a considerable challenge.

“The conditions restrict the height above the seabed at which a horizontal girder might be positioned to still allow a topside – or a barge – to float over. Taking all of these things into consideration, we had to adopt a split jacket concept, essentially consisting of two jacket halves with a

temporary spacer frame in between to enable installation with the required geometrical tolerances,” says Mr Schulte.

Protected Enclosure

Even without the capacity and location of DolWin gamma, HVDC platforms represent complex and challenging construction projects. Consider, for example, the ways in which they differ from oil & gas platforms.

Oil platforms are characterised by open, lattice-style structures – an answer to the potentially volatile nature of non-renewable fuels. In contrast to this, HVDC platforms house sensitive electrical equipment that needs to be protected from the elements.

The solution is a stressed-skin design; a closed-box in appearance with a smooth hull on the outside, supported by welded panels inside.

“The advantages of this are obvious,” states Mr Schulte. “The topsides is lighter in total weight and the design offers a reduced amount of required maintenance and a longer lifetime for the platform.

“We expect to see more stressed skin designs in the near future, also cascading into the smaller platform designs.”

The platform is designed with a lifetime of 25-30 years in mind. Mr Schulte, however, says that he expects Nordic Yards’ platforms will have a practical lifespan considerably longer than this.

“Due to the application of very high safety/ fatigue factors and also due to the smart design and our the reliability and high quality of our workmanship.”

Exceeding Threshold Values

Mr Schulte says that, despite setbacks seen in the offshore wind sector currently, he is confident there is a future for the industry – and with it for HVDC technology.

“As soon as the location of a wind farm exceeds threshold values, the application of HVDC technology is inevitable and also economically viable.”

form of technology, everyone is keen to see the results from the first platforms – such as constructed BorWin beta and HelWin alpha.

The two platforms, which Nordic Yards built for Siemens, have now been handed over to TenneT and are operational.

“I reckon that once the performance of these important reference projects is formally recognised, we will see application of this technology outside Germany.”

A look at the map of proposed offshore wind project locations – including UK Round 3 sites – would seem to back up Mr Schulte’s claim.

However, the industry’s progression into ultra-deepwater and corresponding higher operating temperatures has led to increased flow assurance demands and a requirement for larger buoyancy modules. In order to address these challenges, we have created a more compliant, higher capacity buoyancy clamp range.”

Enhanced Range

“Understanding the significance of buoyancy clamps when it comes to maintaining riser configurations over the lifetime of a project, we took the decision to enhance our DBM clamp range. Utilizing a premium composite construction, it promotes easier and more efficient working conditions, with greater design assurance for the offshore operator,” said Mr Harbison.

In order for risers to better address the critical challenge of flow assurance, ultradeep technologies can utilise thicker insulation layers, which have the effect of reducing the clamp’s capacity to resist buoyancy. So developing a clamp that can accommodate the additional creep associated with thicker insulation, whilst being able to firmly locate bigger buoyancy modules has been a considerable technical challenge. Furthermore, the enhanced clamp design, which offers a universal interface for use on all riser types, now features high performance aramid fibres in place of a fabricated titanium strap.

This development has resulted in simplified manufacture, as well as a significant reduction in lead-time; lead times for clamp components such as straps are now reduced to days rather than months. In addition, the lightweight design means the clamp is more buoyant and lighter in the air, therefore assisting with handling and installation.

The weight of the new tooling solution has been reduced by 90 percent. Furthermore, when using this new range, clamps can be installed in 50 percent less time than with previous systems. “With tool design independent of riser type, our lighter, more automated installation tooling range is much safer to use and, when combined with the new flexible clamp, helps to speed up installation, saving vessel time for customers,” concluded Mr Harbison.

Decked Out

De Hoop has designed the vessel to carry a significant amount of large deck cargo. She features a 500m2 cargo area, able to handle 5t per m2. She also features lashings and fittings for up to 16 TEUs. The deck is protected by the forward superstructure and by cargo rails which run down both port and starboard sides of the vessel. The rails have openings with hoserollers close to the forward crane; whilst on the aft deck another hose-roller is provided for guiding cargo hoses over the stern with the aft crane.

De Hoop has located the superstructure as far forward as possible to maximise available space for large cargo and loading and unloading operations. Space usage has been further optimised by the positioning of generators in the first level of the superstructure as with earlier KISS vessel designs. As a result of such planning, Prince Job I boasts far greater cargo capacity than other vessels of a comparable size.

Tanked Up

Below decks almost all of the space is given over to tanks for various liquids. In total there are 30 tanks; one flushing, two fuel oil and six multi-purpose tanks for fuel/mud, fuel/transmix and transmix/brine combinations. The double hull further comprises seventeen drilling water tanks.

There are an additional four tanks to be found in the foreship below the superstructure, comprising fresh water, dirty oil, sludge and bilge water tanks.

Safety First

Considering the combustible nature of many of the liquids the vessel will handle, safety has been a top-ranking consideration in the design and construction. All tanks and pumps on board comply with DNV-GL requirements for the transport of transmix liquids.

Other safety features include four inflatable life rafts – two to port and two to starboard, each of which can accommodate 25 persons. Additionally, in order to meet SOLAS/IMO requirements, there is a Palfinger supplied man overboard vessel with an outboard engine, located on the starboard side.

For external fire fighting, two monitors with 2,400m3 per hour capacity have been installed. The installation receives water from two dedicated, electric Fi-Fi pumps, each with a capacity of 1,530m3.

A water jet is created by pressing water through the monitor nozzle. The equipment complies with DNV-GL requirements for Fire Fighting Vessel Class 1.

Economical Flexibility

Awaritse, in close collaboration with De Hoop, selected a diesel-electric propulsion system for Prince Job I, ensuring flexibility and economical operability.

The test machine is being used to calibrate the sensors and to verify compliance with the customer specifications, regarding the measuring accuracy.

Mr Wagner explains the benefits to both client and company alike: “Now we do not have to take our sensors to an external institution to calibrate them – we can do it in-house. This saves time and money – benefits that will be passed on to our customers.

“Furthermore, our sensors only have to be calibrated once. This means that the customer can assemble the sensor in their machine and start working. They never have to recalibrate – fit and forget. And, due to the fact that we overload the sensor to a

specific extent, our sensors have long-term stability.”

All Under One Roof

The high loads Mr Wagner refers to are as much as 12MN – this is because GustoMSC required that it be able to measure within a range of -3,400 and +5,700kN. As a result of this investment, the company will be able to process client orders faster and more cost-effectively – with all types of production taking place beneath one roof.

This, Mr Wagner says, provides the additional advantage that every step of the work is carried out to the high in-house standards that are a hallmark of the company.

The subsea pipeline is 882 km long and continues 7 km onshore to the liquefaction facilities being constructed at Bladin Point near Darwin. The scope of work involves adjustable pipe support (APS) structures to the pipeline.
