Desde que a Ponte Magazine assumiu um novo look e uma nova forma de expressão temos, de facto, vindo a compartilhar a nossa vivência com um cada vez maior número de leitores. De várias nacionalidades. Portugueses, claro, mas também muitos brasileiros, angolanos e, graças a sermos bilingues, ingleses apaixonados pelas culturas lusófonas. A Ponte assenta hoje que nem uma luva na sua manifestação da expressão lusófona, e, nestes últimos três meses levou a cabo um dos seus grandes objectivos que é dar a conhecer a lusofonia aos anglófonos. A beleza tornou se a essência e prelúdio da expansão, que vem pôr no caminho certo a revista, na via mais estratégica para divulgar e vender tudo o que de melhor tem Angola, Brasil, Cabo Verde, Guiné, Portugal, Moçambique, São Tomé e Timor. Falamos de vários temas. Do Carnaval de Notting Hill, magnanimamente captado pela câmara do nosso reporter, a um dos gigante do fotojornalismo, de dimensão mundial, o brasileiro André Câmara. Da criação da nova secção de economia, com divulgação de empresários e agentes económicos, e um social cada vez mais presente, onde cada leitor tem o appeal que o leva a projectar a sua vivência e se identificar cada vez mais com a revista; resta, de facto, é viajar, nas páginas deste número, pelas maravilhas do mundo lusófono e sua conexão com o universo anglófono que nos circunda. Since Ponte Magazine changed its layout and expression we have shared our way of living with an increasing number of readers. From many nationalities. Portuguese, of course, but also Brazilian, Angolans and, since we are bilingual, also English people that love lusophone cultures. Ponte is a perfect fit for this Portuguese speaking manifestation and, in these last three months, we have been succeeding in that goal. Beauty and glamor became the essence and prelude of this expansion that puts the magazine on the right track, in the more strategical point to sell and spread everything that Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Portugal, Mozambique and São Tomé have to offer. We tell you about many subjects. From the Notting Hill Carnival, fantastically captured by our reporter’s camera, to the article about one of the giants of the photojournalism, the worldwide known Brazilian André Câmara. From the creation of a new economical section, where we talk about entrepreneurs and economic agents, a social section evermore present, where each reader has an appeal that allows him to show the experiences and identify to the magazine; so you just have to travel through the pages of this issue, through the marvels of the Lusophone world and its connection with the Anglophone universe that surrounds us. Help tourism development A Universidade de Aveiro está a levar a efeito um projeto de investigação de doutoramento em Turismo, cujo tema se centra na avaliação do contributo do potencial retorno e fixação dos emigrantes portugueses para o desenvolvimento do turismo no seu local de origem, em Portugal. Este estudo permitirá perceber se o regresso definitivo e a participação em projetos de desenvolvimento turístico nas suas regiões de origem fazem parte dos objetivos dos emigrantes portugueses. A recolha de dados úteis, passíveis de ter um valor científico reconhecido, faz-se neste caso, através do preenchimento de um questionário que poderá encontrar no site da revista em www.revistaponte. com. The University of Aveiro is undertaking a PhD research project in Tourism, with a theme focusing on assessing the potential contribution from the return and establishment of Portuguese emigrants to the development of tourism in their place of origin in Portugal. Organised by associations representing the Angolan community living in Portugal, the lecture on the life of Angola’s president brought people of all ages together.

The government of Timor-Leste created a website that provides information on how the money from the state budget and funding from international partners is spent. The page, located in www. transparency.gov.tl lets the people see the fate of the Timorense state money, information on public procurement, the selected candidates and the amounts involved, as well as knowing the evolution of the government program and who are its beneficiaries.

Só gostava de saber uma coisa. Se Portugal tem uma divida tão grande, quem deu autorização para contrair essa divida? Quem assinou os contratos sucessivos de pedidos de empréstimos, aumentando a divida soberana?Terei sido eu? O meu pai? Os estimados leitores deste blog? Os Portugueses em geral? Quem? Quem endividou Portugal? (…) Mas não é preciso fazer uma análise muito detalhada para ver que algo está mal. Basta saber o salário que ganho cá e o que ganharia em Portugal, e entrar no Sainsbury’s/Asda/Tesco e entrar no Continente/Pingo Doce/ Minipreço. É assustador ver os preços dos produtos destes hipermercados serem praticamente iguais ou mais baratos no UK, e ainda se ganhar muito mais, para não dizer o dobro. I would like to know something. If Portugal has such a big debt, who gave permission to raise that debt? Who signed the consecutive loan requests that created this big problem? Me? My father? The dear readers of this blog? The Portuguese in general? Who? Who got Portugal in debt? (…) But it’s not even necessary to analyse it carefully to understand that something is really wrong. You just have to be aware of the wages differences and enter in any Sainsbury’s, Asda or Tesco or, in Portugal, enter any Continente, Pingo Doce or Minipreço. It’s scary to see the prices of the products being practically the same and in the UK the salaries being so much bigger, even double.

Estas diferenças (entre os portugueses e ingleses) não deixam de ser engraçadas porque se por um lado o povo português é formal profissionalmente, em situações sociais é um povo super afectivo, todos se cumprimentam com dois beijos (excepto homens, claro), as pessoas abraçam-se sem problemas, etc. Já no Reino Unido são todos “ai não me toques” em questões sociais, dá-se um aperto de mão quando se conhecem pessoas, e são de forma geral mais distantes, mas quando estão em situações profissionais é tudo tu cá tu lá. É interessante esta disparidade.

These differences (between Portuguese and English) are funny because if the Portuguese people are very formal professionally, but when in social situations they are extremely affective, everyone say hello with two kisses on the cheeks (except among men), people hug all the time, etc. In the United Kingdom, they are all “don’t touch me please” when in social situations, you just give a handshake when you meet someone and they are, generically, more distant. But, when they are in a professional environment, it’s very relaxed and friendly. This disparity is really interesting.

Depois de um dia de trabalho chego a casa e dou com uns morangos de pano pendurados na janela da cozinha. Fiquei cheia de vontade de tirar aquilo da janela mas contive-me e pus-me a arrumar a loiça para me abstrair do novo elemento decorativo. Entretanto chega a autora da obra de arte que amavalmente me diz que se eu nao gostar posso tirar os morangos dali e que estava só a tentar decorar um pouco a cozinha. Sou incapaz de dizer que não gosto e acabo por me render aos morangos de pano colados com fita cola na janela. Para ajudar a minha flatmate ainda lavou alguma da minha loiça! Impossível ficar chateada!

After a day of work, I arrived home to spot some cloth strawberries on the kitchen window. I just wanted to take them off the window, but I held myself and started tidying up the place to try to forget the new decorative element. Meanwhile, the author of that work of art arrived and told me that I could take them off it I wanted, she was just trying to decorate the kitchen a little. I’m incapable to tell her I don’t like it and I just surrender to the strawberries glued to the window. And, to help all this, my flatmate washed some of my dishes. How could I be upset?

Mas, qualquer pessoa que tenha assistido a qualquer edição deste evento, sabe que, apesar disso, o público vibra no limite apenas quando as escolas de samba invadem as estradas com as suas centenas de participantes, ao melhor estilo do Rio, em disfarces coloridos, cheios de glamour, imaginação e beleza. The Notting Hill Carnival is described by the organization as an event that celebrates the Caribbean culture. But anyone who has attended any edition of this event, you know that despite this, the crowd only goes wild when the samba schools conquer the roads with its hundreds of participants, at the best Rio style, in colorful costumes, glamor, imagination and beauty. This year was no exception and the Ponte Magazine was right in the middle of the parade to follow the allegoric cars cars, without dancing, but taking lots of pictures for you

um fim-de-semana alargado e com sol na maior parte do tempo, cerca de um milhão de pessoas marcaram presença nas ruas de Notting Hill e Ladbroke Grove para assistir a mais uma edição do Carnaval de Notting Hill, o maior evento ao ar livre do género da Europa. O receio que algumas pessoas sentiam, graças aos lamentáveis eventos decorridos em Agosto em Londres, mostrou-se completamente infundado já que, apesar do carnaval deste ano ter contado com o maior contingente policial de sempre, o número de pequenas ocorrências diminuiu em relação ao ano passado. O que ficou na retina foi a festa, a cor e o glamour. Foi o samba e os gritos de alegria, o bater dos tambores, os carros alegóricos, as coreografias e as plumas a voar. E a beleza brasileira, claro, cheia de entusiasmo e naturalidade. Além dos desfiles das escolas de samba, mais de 40 sistemas de som colocados em diversos locais das ruas do espaço destinado ao evento tocavam os sons das respectivas culturas, de diferentes países das Caraíbas e da América do Sul. Por toda a parte existiam bares e pubs abertos, barracas de comidas típicas dos vários países e, como sempre, alegria e convívio.

n the big weekend, which was sunny most of the time, about one million people filled the streets of Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove to watch another Notting Hill Carnival parade, the biggest outdoor event of its kind in Europe. The fear some people felt before the event, thanks to the unfortunate events that took place in August in London, was completely unfounded since, despite the carnival this year having the largest ever police contingent present, the number of problems decreased compared to last year. What remained was the party, the colour and the glamour - it was the samba and the cries of joy, the beating of the drums, the decorated cars, the choreography and the feathers flying, and the Brazilian beauty, of course, full of enthusiasm and naturalness. In addition to the parade of the samba schools, over 40 sound systems placed at various locations in the streets played the sounds of the cultures of the different participant countries of the Caribbean and South America. Everywhere there were bars and pubs open, typical food stalls from different countries and, as always, joy and conviviality uniting all the people gathered in party.

O evento teve o seu início em 1964, então chamado de Carnaval de Trindade e Tobago, mas rapidamente se tornou num melting pot de culturas e, apesar de ser descrito como um festival caribenho, a alegria brasileira não demorou a ganhar o seu lugar de destaque nas celebrações. No entanto, apesar da grande tradição do evento, existem pressões para que mude de local, para Hyde Park, ou para que se altere o sistema de acesso, através do pagamento de ingressos, de forma a aliviar as ruas. Mas independentemente disso, a verdade é que o Carnaval de Notting Hill é um grande sucesso e decorreu de forma ordeira e pacífica, principalmente tendo em conta a enorme quantidade de pessoas que se deslocaram ao local e assistiram aos desfiles da Paraíso School of Samba, da London School of Samba e de todos os outros grupos que desfilaram na parada

Location change

The event started in 1964, and was then called the Carnival of Trinidad and Tobago, but quickly became a melting pot of cultures and, despite being described as a Caribbean festival, Brazilian joy was quick to win a place of prominence in the celebrations. However, despite the great tradition of the event, there is pressure to change its location to Hyde Park, or just to change the access system, by paying for tickets, in order to relieve street congestion. But regardless, the truth is that the Notting Hill Carnival was a great success and took place in an orderly and peaceful manner, especially given the huge number of people who attended and watched the parade of the Samba School of Paradise, the London School of Samba and all the other groups who marched in the streets

A piece of Brazil No meio do público, Aline e Bruna carregavam uma enorme bandeira do Brasil enquanto posavam junto a um dos carros para conseguirem mais uma recordação do carnaval. Morando em Cambridge, vieram a Londres de propósito para assistir ao evento. “Não se compara ao Carnaval do Rio, mas é muito bom”, afirma Aline. “É um voltar à terra natal e estaremos aqui para o ano com toda a certeza”, confirma Bruna, acrescentando que é uma “alegria ver a alegria toda, a espontaneidade e ver como a comunidade londrina vibra com o carnaval. Quando passamos com a bandeira brasileira, toda a gente nos fala e grita que ama o Brasil, nunca imaginámos que seria assim, é uma experiência ótima”. Lúcio também é brasileiro e disse à Ponte que é um prazer participar no evento que é “um pedacinho de Brasil em Londres. Moro aqui em Notting Hill e venho sempre”. Em relação aos anos passados, não notou diferenças de relevo. “É sempre bom”, conclui.

In the audience, Aline and Bruna carried a huge Brazilian flag while posing next to a car to get one more piece of memorabilia from the carnival. Living in Cambridge, the Brazilians came to London to attend the event. “We can’t compare this to the Carnival in Rio, but it is very good,” said Aline. “It feels like we’re returning to our homeland and we will be here for years for sure,” confirmed Bruna, adding that it is a “amazing to see all the joy and spontaneity as well as see how the London community buzzes with the carnival. When we walk past carrying the Brazilian flag, everybody talks and tell us that they love Brazil, I never imagined it would be like this, it’s a great experience”. Lúcio, also from Brazil, also confirmed it was a pleasure to participate in the event that he described as “a little piece of Brazil in London. I live here in Notting Hill and I always come”. This year’s event was not very different from the past carnivals. “It’s always good”, he concluded.

No Domingo, vi os distúrbios, vi-os a incendiarem os caixotes do lixo, os carros destruídos à minha frente em Stockwell. Foi horrível, tivemos que nos refugiar num bar e ficar lá mais de duas horas à espera de poder sair e depois fugimos na direcção contrária. Nos outros dias nem saí muito de casa.

Sunday I saw the riots. I saw them put garbage bins on fire and destroying cars in front of me in Stockwell. It was horrible, we had to hide in a bar and stay there for more than two hours until we could run in the contrary direction. In the next days I hardly left home.

Onze mimos e performers físicos juntaram-se pela primeira vez numa produção específica para um local em Londres, que explorou o tema da solidão nas grandes cidades. “O Perdedor”, “A Mulher Cansada”, “O Experimentador da Fama” e o “Corredor Divertido” foram ape-nas alguns dos personagens que esti-veram no meio da povoada estação. Co-criada e co-dirigida pela brasi-leira Nicole Pschetz e Antonio Blanco, que já colaboraram antes em outras performances, o trabalho foi desenvolvido especialmente para a estação de St. Pancras. O evento fez parte do Camden Fringe 2011.

Energinmotion took over St Pancras International for two days with its latest physical theatre performance based on characters from the book ‘Earwitness - 50 Characters’ by Elias Canetti, called “Be Lonely With me”. Canetti’s work is a psychological description of people who constitute the essence of modern society. Eleven corporeal mime and physical performers were gathered together for the first time in a site specific production in London which explored the theme of loneliness in big cities. ‘The Loser’, ‘The Tired Woman’, ‘The Fame Tester’ and ‘The Fun Runner’ were only a few of the many characters that were depicted in the middle of the busy station. Co-created and co-directed by Brazilian Nicole Pschetz and Antonio Blanco, who have collaborated before in other performances, the work has been developed specially for St Pancras station. The event was part of the Camden Fringe 2011.

“It’s important to know how to break the rules” WORDS Luís Costa Pires

os 42 anos, o fotojornalista André Câmara, residente em Londres, mantém o mesmo espírito de curiosidade e atrevimento que tinha aos 17 quando, sozinho, entrou numa favela do Rio de Janeiro durante um tiroteio e fotografou os bandidos a lutar e tomar cocaina. Olhando sempre em redor para todos os pormenores, preferiu, apesar da ameaça da chuva, fazer a entrevista na esplanada do pub onde nos encontrámos em Maida Vale, onde estão expostas algumas das suas fotografias. E, quando finalmente a chuva caiu por alguns momentos, divagou sobre a sua beleza e a sua arte fotográfica de tentar encontrar beleza em qualquer paisagem ou situação, mesmo que tristes. A entrevista decorreu solta, assuntos puxando outros assuntos, como uma conversa diversas vezes interrompidas por risos, pelo cumprimento de muitas das pessoas que passavam na rua e no pub e que o consideram amigo, e pelo surgimento do arco-íris, depois da chuva, que motivou mais uma sequência de boa conversa. Mas, sendo impossível colocar aqui as quase três horas de entrevista, fica apenas o mais essencial da vida deste brasileiro, premiado por sete vezes como melhor fotojornalista do Reino Unido, autor de algumas das fotografias mais icónicas da imprensa mundial, atleta paralímpico desde que perdeu uma das pernas e, agora, protagonista de um dos vídeos do Foreign Office do Governo Britânico intítulado “Britain as they see it”.

t 42 years of age and living in London, photojournalist André Câmara still has the same curious and daring spirit that he had at 17 when, alone, he entered a Favela (slum) in Rio de Janeiro while a gunfight was going on and took pictures of the outlaws shooting and taking cocaine. Always looking at all the details, André chose, although it was almost raining, to have this interview in the open air area of the pub in Maida Vale where we met, and where some pictures of him decorate the walls. When finally the rain started falling for a brief moment, he wondered about its beauty and the photographic craft of trying to find enchantment in any sight or situation, even if sad. The interview went on in a free way, each subject leading to a new one, like a random chat constantly interrupted by laughter, the hellos of many people who consider him a friend passing by, and the rainbow that, after the rain stopped, inspired another good subject. Being impossible to write here the full content of a three hour interview, these are the essential moments of this Brazilian’s life, seven time winner of the best UK Photojournalist Of The Year Award, author of some of the most iconic pictures in the world, paralympic athlete since he lost one of his legs and, now, star of one of a video made by the British Foreign Office called “Britain as they see it”.

Já em criança o André tinha noção de que queria ser fotógrafo?

Sim, comecei quando tinha 13 anos. Tirei um curso de fotografia e aos 15 comecei a trabalhar num suplemento juvenil no Jornal do Brasil, no Rio. Então as minhas fotografias foram ganhando destaque e quando o suplemento terminou, passei a fotografar para o jornal.

Foi aí que foi fotografar as favelas?

Isso foi dois anos depois, tinha 17. Disseram para eu fotografar um tiroteio numa favela no centro do Rio. Cheguei lá de manhã e a imprensa e a polícia estavam do lado de fora à espera do final. Quando chegou a hora do almoço, os jornalistas foram beber cervejas e eu que tinha 17 anos e não bebia, fiquei ali. Quando estava sozinho, apareceu um bandido no cimo das escadas e fez um gesto com os dedos para eu subir. E eu subi.

Did you already know you wanted to be a photographer when you were a child?

Yes, I started it when I was 13. I took a photography course and, when I was 15, I started working in the youth section of Jornal do Brasil, in Rio. My pictures started being noticed and, when the section finished, I was hired for the newspaper itself.

That’s when you photographed the Favelas?

Yes, two years after I started, I was 17, I was told to go take some pictures of a gunfight in one of central Rio’s favelas. I arrived in the morning and the press and police were standing there, waiting for it to end. When lunch time arrived, journalists went to drink some beers and, since I was 17 and couldn’t drink, I stayed there. When I was alone, an outlaw showed up on top of the stairs and gestured for me to go up. And so I did.

Subiu simplesmente? Não teve medo?

You simply went up? You weren’t afraid?

Mas hoje faria o mesmo?

Would you act like that today?

Não, simplesmente fui ver o que ele queria. Era uma época muito romântica no Brasil, os jornalistas lutavam pela verdade, éramos respeitados até pelos bandidos, até que mais tarde alguns jornalistas trairam essa confiança.

Não, hoje agradeceria, mas diria não obrigado (risos). Bom, mas aí eu subi. Eles estavam drogados com cocaina pois a guerra já durava há dois dias e eles tinham que ficar acordados até ao fim. Ele começou a dizer-me que eu tinha que entender que eles eram os bons, que ajudavam a comunidade, e os outros é que eram os maus. E eu dizia, eu sou só um fotógrafo, posso chamar o jornalista para falar com ele, mas será que posso tirar uma foto? Com o tempo eles gostaram de mim e deixaram. Foi aí que pedi para tirar uma foto do revólver dele e usei a grande ângular de forma a apanhar também o outro cheirando cocaina no fundo e essa foto ficou famosa mais tarde. Quando recomeçaram os tiros, mandaram-me embora. Quando desci as escadas, os outros voltaram por causa do barulho mas não acreditavam que eu tinha estado lá dentro. Eu dizia que tinha fotos incríveis para revelar e eles falavam para eu ficar quieto e esperar pela hora de voltar. Quando finalmente cheguei à redação, corri pela sala com os rolos na mão e, dez minutos depois, eles estavam espantados com as fotos e foi primeira página no dia seguinte.

No, I simply went to see what he wanted. We were in a very romantic period in Brasil - journalists were fighting for the truth, we were respected even by the outlaws, until some journalists later betrayed that trust. No, today I would say ‘thank you but no thank you’ (laughs). But I did go up. They were completely stoned on cocaine because the gunfight had been going on for two days and they had to stay awake until the end. He started telling me that they were the good guys, the other ones were the villains. And I said to him, I’m just a photographer and I can call the journalist so you can talk to him, but can I take your picture? After a while they started liking me and they let me take some pictures. I asked to take a picture of his gun and I used a grand angular lens in such a way that I also got another guy in the background sniffing cocaine. That photo became very famous. Then, the shooting resumed and they sent me away. When I got downstairs the other journalists and police had arrived because they heard the shots but they wouldn’t believe me when I said I had been inside. I was telling them that I had amazing pictures to develop and they just told me to keep quiet and wait. When I finally got to the newspaper, I ran through the room with the negatives in my hand and, ten minutes later, they were amazed by the pictures. It was the cover of the next day.

ENTREVISTA | INTERVIEW Na altura teve noção do impacto das fotografias?

Sim, a partir daí e de uma entrevista na TV que teve no dia seguinte, os políticos começaram a ter uma atitude diferente porque ficaram horrorizados com o que viram. E o engraçado é que recebi medalhas, veja bem, na rua eu era o moleque herói do jornalismo, mas quando a minha mãe soube do que eu tinha feito, dentro de casa levei uma surra enorme (risos).

Reconheceu-se quando viu o filme “Cidade de Deus”?

Fui ver o filme sem saber do que falava e comecei a sentir afinidade com o personagem do garoto que fotografa as favelas. Mas quando o garoto no filme começa a trabalhar ainda tão novo no mesmo jornal onde eu trabalhei na verdade, tira as fotos dos traficantes e entra a correr na redação como eu fiz, eu disse “pô, aquele sou eu!”. Mas claro que que há diferenças.

Did you, at the time, realise how important your pictures were? Yes, because after that and a TV interview, politicians began acting differently because they were shocked by what they’d seen. And the funny thing is that I was getting medals, outside I was the hero of the press but when I got home and my mother realised what I had done, I took an enormous beating (laughs).

Did you recognize yourself when you watched “City of God”?

I went to the film without knowing what it was about. I started feeling close to the kid character that takes pictures in the slums. But when the kid starts working in the same newspaper that I did, takes the pictures of the drug dealers and runs into the newspaper as I did, and I thought, man, that is me! But of course there are differences, the kid in the film lives in a slum and the story revolves around the outlaws and they are very different to the ones I met.

The picture of the 7/7 Uma das suas fotografias mais icónica e que foi capa em todo o mundo foi a dos atentados de Londres. Por quê que acha que teve tanto sucesso? Porque a mulher que fotografei com a máscara no rosto saindo do tube não estava caída, estava de pé, o que mostra como os ingleses reagem a esses ataques e aos contratempos, sempre de pé, resistindo, aliás como se viu agora com as riots. E como tinha o rosto coberto pela máscara, não podia ser identificada, podia ser qualquer pessoa, era todos os que sofreram o atentado.

Fotografou mais cenários de guerra depois?

Só a primeira Guerra do Golfo, no Iraque. Eu tinha acabado de chegar a Inglaterra, estava à procura de oportunidades e o regime do Saddam não deixava os fotógrafos ocidentais entrarem. Então, como era brasileiro, aceitaram o meu pedido. Por isso, a Associated Press contratou-me e, durante três meses, fui o único fotógrafo ocidental no cenário de guerra, com as minhas fotos publicadas no mundo inteiro.

A seguir foi para a Reuters. Foi um grande passo em frente?

Sim, e fiz uma das fotos de que mais gosto, durante o Campeonato do Mundo de futebol, nos EUA, onde o Brasil se tornou tetra-campeão. É a foto do Baggio, de cabeça baixa depois de ter falhado o penaly, com os brasileiros por trás a festejar. Foi considerada a melhor foto do campeonato e recebi um convite para trabalhar no The Times.

Na Reuters também tirou fotografias importantes à realeza.

Did you photograph any other war?

I did, the first Gulf War in Iraq. I had just arrived in England, I was looking for opportunities and Saddam’s regime wouldn’t let western photographers enter. So, since I was Brazilian, my visa was accepted. That’s why Associated Press hired me and, for three months, I was the only western photographer in the war, with my pictures published all around the world.

You went to Reuters next. Was that a big step up in your career?

Yes and there I took one of the photos I like more, during the soccer World Championship, in the US, when Brazil became tetra-champions. It’s a picture of Baggio, head bowing low after missing a penalty, with the Brazilians cheering behind him. It was considered the best picture of the tournament and I received an invitation from The Times.

With Reuters you also took important photos of the royal family?

Sim, foi aí que consegui a minha marca. As fotos iam para os jornais de todo o mundo. Lembro que, quando a Princesa Diana começou a não estar bem com o Princípe Carlos, fotografei-a numa visita a um lar de idosos e fui o único que consegui uma foto em que ela quase chorava. Foi capa dos tablóides todos e espalhou-se pelo mundo.

Yes, that’s when I made my mark. The photos were published all over the world. I remember that when Princess Diana started to be rumoured to be splitting with Prince Charles, I photographed her during a visit to an elderly home and I was the only one who took a photo of her almost crying. It was on the cover of all the tabloids and spread through the world.

E na Argentina, por causa da Diana, teve mais uma aventura.

In Argentina, still because of Diana, you had another adventure.

Bem, ela ia para a Patagónia ver as baleias, mas a Reuters não conseguiu bilhetes a tempo e eu fiquei em Buenos Aires em terra. Então, para não ficar parado à espera que ela regressasse, tentei fingir que fazia parte da comitiva dela. Ainda estive dentro de um dos carros a caminho do avião,

One of your most iconic pictures that was cover all over the world was taken during the London terrorist attacks. Why was it so successful? Because the woman I photographed with the mask on her face getting out of the tube wasn’t on the floor, she was up and walking, which shows how British people react to these attacks and to bad things, she was up, resisting, as we also saw with the recent riots. And since she had her face covered, she could be anyone. She was all the people who suffered the attack.

Well, she was going to Patagonia, to see the whales, but Reuters took too long and didn’t get me tickets in time, so I was stuck in Buenos Aires. So, since I didn’t want to be just waiting for her return, I tried to pretend I was part of her entourage. I even managed to get into one of the

cars heading to the airport, but, when we were there, Diana posed with a group of 15 Argentinian police officers and I couldn’t resist, I took her a picture and I was discovered. Her security men escorted me out holding me by the arms, my feet couldn’t even touch the ground (laughs).

Ou seja, ainda é a mesma criança que foi fotografar as favelas, com o mesmo espírito malandro?

So, in essence, you’re still the same kid that ran up the Favela to take pictures of the criminals?

Sim e isso foi parte do meu sucesso em Inglaterra, essa coisa carioca de desenracar. Quando cheguei via todos a cumprir as regras. Ìamos fotografar e a polícia dizia para ficarem ali e todos ficavam. Mas eu pedia, posso ir um pouco mais para a frente para tirar uma fotografia? Não falo em quebrar regras de forma errada, mas tentar ir um pouco mais além sempre funciona. Toda a gente pode simplesmente cumprir regras. O importante é saber como quebrar as regras, sempre de forma legal, mas estendendo as regras, melhorando.

E como é que os britanicos reagem a isso?

Yes, and that was part of my success in England, that Brazilian thing of finding a way. When I arrived I would see everyone following all the rules. We were photographing something and the police would say ‘stay there’, everyone did. But I asked, ‘can I go a little further so I can take a picture?’ I don’t mean breaking rules in the wrong sense, but to try to go a little beyond. Anyone can just follow rules. But the important thing is to know how to break them, always legally, but understanding the rules, bettering them.

And do British accept that breaking of rules?

Agora melhor. Eles mudaram muito com o influxo de pessoas do mundo inteiro nestes últimos vinte anos. E graças ao respeito e igualdade com que tratam todos, hoje Londres é a capital mundial do multiculturalismo. Viajei por todo o mundo e nunca vi um local com tanta variedade. Londres é como a world wide web. Quem está aqui, está no mundo inteiro.

They do more now. They have changed a lot because of the arrival of so many immigrants over these last 20 years. And, thanks to the respect and equality with which they treat everyone, London today is the world capital of multiculturalism. I’ve travelled all over the world and I have never seen a place with this much variety. London is like the World Wide Web. He who is here, is in the whole world.

Eles gostam muito da cultura brasileira. Sente isso?

They love Brazilian culture. Do you feel that?

Todos os prémios que recebeu foram aqui. Sente-se inglês?

All the awards you won were in the UK. Do you feel British?

Para finalizar, que projectos tem agora, além do fotojornalismo?

What projects do you have now, other than the photojournalism?

Em qualquer lugar do mundo onde fui, e estive no mundo inteiro, quando falo que sou brasileiro abre-se um sorriso. É uma benção que temos. Até no Iraque, no meio da guerra, me tratavam muito melhor do que aos outros. E agora com o boom brasileiro, ao carinho acrescenta-se o respeito.

A Inglaterra é também o meu país. Vim com 20 anos e tenho 42. Sou brasileiro de coração, mas também já sou muito inglês, tenho três filhos nascidos cá.

Estou a trabalhar numa fotobiografia actual do Gilberto Gil, tenho estado com ele em vários shows e digressões pela Europa. Além disso, tenho a ideia de um livro com fotografias sobre a beleza do que está a ser feito para salvar o mundo em termos ecológicos. Acredito que ainda vamos a tempo de remediar o mal que foi feito até agora.

Everywhere in the world I have felt it. Whenever I say I’m Brazilian, a smile appears. It’s a blessing we have. Even in Iraq, in the middle of the war, I was treated much better than all the others. And now, with the Brazilian boom it’s even better, because you add respect to the tenderness. England is also my country. I came here when I was 20 and I’m 42. I’m Brazilian by heart and love, but I’m also very British, I even have three kids here. I’m working on a photo-biography of Gilberto Gil (Brazilian singer). I’ve been with him in several shows and tours through Europe. I also have an idea for a book with pictures about the beauty of what’s being done to save the world ecologically. I believe we are still in time to solve the wrongs we have done so far.

WAS Never forgotten by the lusophones Há 14 anos atrás falecia, num acidente de automóvel, a Princesa do Povo, a figura mais querida da monarquia inglesa, alimento de jornais, de revistas e dos sonhos cor-de-rosa de muitos admiradores. A Ponte falou com lusófonos que viviam em Londres na altura do acidente e que, de alguma forma, contactaram com este infeliz acontecimento.

oi no dia 31 de Agosto de 1997. O mundo acordava com a terrível notícia. Diana de Gales, a mulher que despertava em todo o mundo sentimentos de compaixão e fazia os contos de fada parecerem realidade, tinha falecido num terrível acidente de automóvel, juntamente

com o seu namorado Dodi Fayed e o seu motorista Henri Paul. O acidente aconteceu em Paris, no túnel de um local ironicamente chamado de Pont de l’Alma (Ponte da Alma), e criou uma imensa comoção em todo o mundo, tamanho era o respeito por esta mulher que, desde que ganhara visibilidade, usava a sua imagem para chamar a atenção para os problemas do mundo e encorajar à sua resolução. Clara Lopes, portuguesa a residir em Londres há 36 anos, visitou, anos mais tarde, o local onde o acidente aconteceu. “Fui a Paris com a minha amiga celebrar os meus anos e claro que tinha em ideia que queria visitar o sitio onde ela teve o acidente”, comenta a portuguesa, para quem a princesa era uma figura muito querida. “Quando a Princesa Diana morreu foi uma sensação inexplicável. Perguntava-me como e porquê? Eu só soube da notícia às 7 da manhã, quando uma amiga me

ligou para eu ouvir as notícias. Foi um choque total, não parava de chorar e fiquei apática por uns dias. Acho que todo o mundo sentiu o mesmo, era a minha figura favorita da realeza”. Clara lembra-se de Diana como sendo “simpática e tendo ajudado muita gente. Mas era uma pessoa como nós, apesar de ser bastante criticada e usada pela realeza em todos os aspectos”.

O amor do público

Susana Souza é brasileira e também estava em Londres quando tudo aconteceu. “Não queria acreditar quando recebi a notícia. Ela era um exemplo para mim, mesmo sofrendo por amor continuava dando bons exemplos para seus filhos e para o mundo, se preocupando. Foi muito triste”, refere.

A importância dela foi a de fazer um contacto, de trazer de volta o amor do público para com a realeza André Câmara, fotojornalista entrevistado nesta edição (ver página XX) teve a oportunidade de conhecer e fotografar a princesa e de fazer parte da sua comitiva em algumas ocasiões, como por exemplo numa célebre viagem à Argentina. “A importância dela foi a de fazer um contacto, de trazer de volta o amor do público para com a realeza. Ela foi uma conexão, mas a realeza só percebeu a sua importância quando ela morreu. O príncipe Charles não tem carisma, nem nenhum dos outros. Ela trouxe esse carisma e, com a sua morte, fez todo o mundo perceber isso mesmo. O filho dela é exactamente a continuidade do que ela fez. É impressionante como é claro para nós a importância que ele vai ter e, provavelmente, vai ser o rei”, conclui

Fourteen years ago she died in a car accident, the People’s Princess, the most beloved figure of the English monarchy, fuel for newspapers, magazines and dreams of many admirers. Ponte Magazine spoke to Lusophone living in London at the time of the accident who have stories to tell about that time.

t was on August 31, 1997 that the world woke up to the terrible news. Diana of Wales, the woman who awakened worldwide feelings of compassion and made fairy tales seem real had died in a terrible car accident along with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their chauffeur Henri Paul. The accident happened in a Paris tunnel, ironically near a place called Pont de l’Alma (Soul Bridge), and created a huge stir around the world, such was the respect for this woman, who used her image to call attention to the problems of the world and encourage their resolution. Clara Lopes, a Portuguese living in London for 36 years, visited, years later, the place where the accident happened. “I went to Paris with my friend to celebrate my birthday and of course I wanted to visit the place where she had the accident,” said the Portuguese, for whom the princess was a much beloved role model. “When Princess Diana died

She had a connection, but the royalty did not realise her importance before she died. Like all the other members of the family, Prince Charles has no charisma. She was different and brought that charisma and her death made the world realise it. Now, her son is just the continuation of what she did and was. Her importance was that she made a contact, she brought back the love of the public for royalty it was an unexplainable feeling. I just wondered how and why? I heard the news at 7 am, when a friend called me, telling me to turn on the TV. It was a total shock, I couldn’t stop crying and was sad for several days. I think that everyone felt the same. She was my favourite person of the royal family”. Clara remembers Diana as being “friendly and someone who helped many people. But in the end she was like us, despite being widely criticised and used by the royalty”.

Paintings of Vitor Boga in Just in Case cafe & wine bar O Just In Case, em Oval, foi o palco da inauguração da exposição de pintura de Vítor Boga. O pintor de 61 anos ficou feliz e orgulhoso do resultado da festa, onde cerca de 60 pessoas tiveram a chance de admirar os seus trabalhos etnográficos acerca das suas impressões iniciais de Londres, mas sempre com ligação à sua terra mãe, Portugal. The Just In Case, in Oval, held the opening of Vítor Boga’s exhibition of paintings. The 61 years old painter was happy and proud with the result of the party, where almost 60 people had the chance of admiring his etnographic works about his first impressions of London, but always with a connection to his motherland, Portugal. The exhibition can be visited until the 15th of September. Ponte Magazine was there and, as always, shows you some photos of the people in the event.

Portuguese gastronomy party in Jersey A Festa Gastronómica Portuguesa em Jersey foi realizada no People’s Park, Saint Helier. Além da área para crianças, o evento contou com seis barracas de comes e bebes com frango grelhado no churrasco, bolo do caco, poncha e a boa cerveja e vinho Português. The first big Casa da Chachaça party happened on the last 27 of August. This is a super Brazilian event, with live dance and music, beauty and drinks with special prices. Casa da Cachaça will happen every last Saturday of each month (next one is on the 24 of September) at the pub Cape, near St. Pauls (EC2V7JQ), and it’s the perfect place to celebrate anniversaries or any other occasion that require joy, color and good taste. O actor e cantor português Nelson Antunes está em Londres para trabalhar na sua formação musical e procurar uma oportunidade fora do seu país. Tendo já cantado em alguns locais para público português, nomeadamente no aniversário da Ponte, em Junho, recorda nesta entrevista como começou a sua aventura no mundo do espectáculo

Portuguese actor and singer Nelson Antunes is in London to work on his musical education and look for an opportunity outside his country. Having already sung in some venues for the Portuguese public, particularly on the anniversary of Ponte Magazine in June, he recalls in this interview how he started his adventure into the world of entertainment.

Ponte - A tua carreira começou com a participação no programa Familia SuperStar, na televisão portuguesa. Como é que decidiste participar?

Ponte - Your career began with your participation in the program Familia SuperStar, on Portuguese television. How did you decide to participate?

Já tinhas o sonho de cantar antes?

You already had the dream to sing?

Nelson Antunes - Decidi participar de imediato após ver a promoção na TV. Fui a correr a casa do meu padrinho Fernando Braga que sempre teve voz para o Fado e música portuguesa. Foi umas das melhores pessoas com quem tive a oportunidade de me cruzar na minha vida, grande ser humano e sobretudo amigo.

O meu sonho começa quando vou viver com o meu pai com os meus 14 anos para o Porto. O meu pai é um reconhecido animador de karaoke na região do Porto e arredores. Deixei a escola com essa idade e comecei a aprender toda a funcionalidade dos sistemas de som, mesas de mistura, animação e fundamentalmente cantar. Cantei pela primeira vez num bar chamado “Aparências” o tema Jardins Proibidos, do Paulo Gonzo. Fui logo aconselhado a apostar em formação e assim o tenho feito até hoje.

Como foi a experiência de participar no programa?

Foi sem dúvida bastante enriquecedor e digamos que se abriram portas para os objectivos que tinha traçado. Não só pelo facto de logo após o programa ter sido convidado para fazer um dos protagonistas da novela Rebelde Way, como o facto de no programa termos tido aulas intensivas de canto com o Henrique Feist, um dos melhores professores em portugal.

Tinhas alguma experiência como actor? Como é que

Nelson Antunes - I applied immediately after seeing the promotion on TV. I hurried to the house of my godfather, Fernando Braga, who always had good voice for Fado and Portuguese music. He was one of the best people with whom I had the opportunity to come across in my life, a great human being and especially a friend. My dream started when I lived with my dad in Porto, when I was 14. My father is a renowned karaoke entertainer in the Porto region. I left school at that age and started learning all the functions of sound systems, mixing consoles, animation, and basically to sing. I sang for the first time the song “Jardins Proíbidos” in a bar called “Aparências”. I was advised to invest in training and I have followed that advice so far.

How was the experience of participating in the program?

It was certainly very enriching and it opened doors to goals that I dreamed of. Not only because after the program I was invited to play one of the leading roles of the soap opera Rebelde Way, but also because the program had intensive vocal lessons with Henrique Feist, one of the best teachers in Portugal.

You had some experience as an actor? How did you give life to the character “Manuel?” The TV station SIC called me and producer Teresa Guilherme told me that after seeing my performance

A SIC ligou-me e a Teresa Guilherme disse-me numa reunião que após ter visto a minha prestação no tema “She” decidiu ligar para a produção e chamarme para o personagem “Manel”. Não tive aulas de representação, worshops de adaptação ou qualquer tipo de experiência. Lembro-me de após ter ganho o personagem de todos estarem a falar em construção de personagem, pesquisa e eu pensava, então agora o que é suposto fazer? Felizmente contei com a ajuda do Nuno Eiró que tem bastante expeiriência em frente ás cameras e transportei energias e situações mais ou menos positivas da minha vida para o personagem. Foi importante também a ajuda do director de actores Heitor lourenço, do Diogo Morgado e do José Raposo.

Estas séries juvenis têm um grande impacto na juventude em Portugal. Sentiste um grande carinho do público jovem? É inacreditável o facto das pessoas a nivel geral, de todas as idades terem uma empatia e um carinho tão especial pelo “Manel”. Foi sem dúvida, foi o chamado “bombom” na representação. Aliás esse foi o factor primário para ter sido convidado. Os outros colegas eram na altura mais fortes na representação.

Vieste para Londres no inicio do ano. Porquê?

Vim atrás dos objectivos que quero concretizar na área da formação musical. Londres tem os melhores colégios e escolas de música do mundo.

Como tem sido a adaptação? Tens encontrado portas abertas para a música e para o cinema? Apesar de estar em Londres, estou bastante atento a Portugal e continuo em sintonia com um manager fantástico, o João Alves, com quem trabalhei em Portugal. Ele já me deu a fantástica oportunidade de participar na gala de entrega de prémios Londres no “Chelsea Bridge Hotel” e existem outros projectos.

Planeias voltar a portugal ou ficar pelo estrangeiro?

Para além da formação como referi quero desenvolver o meu projecto a solo que neste momento está em fase de análise. Felizmente tenho as pessoas certas à minha volta, portanto estou a desenvolvê-lo e, mesmo estando aqui, se surpresas acontecerem tenciono continuar a ir a Portugal cada vez que se justifique e que for necessário

This young TV series had a major impact on youth in Portugal. Have you felt great affection from the young audience?

It’s unbelievable how much empathy and affection people in general have for “Manuel”. The series is being screened again now and that wakes people’s memories, but at no time have I felt less loved because even three years later, people would stop me in the street and show their affection.

The character you played also sings. Was it the ideal role for you?

That was, undoubtedly, the “candy” for my portrayal. The fact that I sing was the primary factor in my invitation for the role. The other actors had stronger acting skills at the time.

You come to London earlier this year. Why?

I came to achieve my objectives in musical education. London has the best colleges and music schools in the world.

How have you adapted? Have you found open doors for music and film?

Despite being in London, I’m quite aware of Portugal and keep in tune with a fantastic manager, João Alves, who I worked with back in Portugal. He has already given me a fantastic opportunity to participate in a gala awards ceremony in London at the “Chelsea Bridge Hotel” and there are other projects coming.

You plan to return to Portugal?

In addition to the training, I want to develop a solo project which is currently being analysed. Luckily I have the right people around me, so I’m very positive about it. But, even being here, if surprises happen, I still intend to continue to go to Portugal often

Nominated several times for the award “Innovative Entrepreneur of the Diaspora,” sponsored by the Portuguese Presidency of the Republic, he was in London during July and August getting to know the reality facing Portuguesespeaking businesses in the UK.

Ponte – Existem condições para se criar pontes entre as empresas dos mercados brasileiro e português e o Reino Unido? Walter Montalvão - Como tudo na vida, quando as condições não existem, criam-se. Cada empreendedor é também um promotor de mudanças e aqui existem muitos, assim como existem muitas oportunidades de gerar negócios tríplices envolvendo o Reino Unido, Portugal e o Brasil.

O que achou do potencial económico das comunidades lusófonas no Reino Unido nestas semanas que esteve no Reino Unido?

Estas seis semanas de contatos diários com empresários lusos e brasileiros me mostraram a inexistência de elementos catalizadores que conduzam à facilitação e acesso a novos mercados e oportunidades, papel que deveria no meu entender, ser das Câmaras de Comércio tanto a Portuguesa quanto a Brasileira, que surpreendentemente estão muito mais vocacionadas para as relações sociais de manutenção do “status quo” e atendimento às grandes empresas do que ajudando, propondo e criando condições ao desenvolvimento de quem efetivamente precisa delas – os pequenos e médios empresários.

Are there conditions to help build a bridge between companies in the Brazil and Portugal and the UK? Walter Montalvan - When conditions don’t exist, they can be created. Each entrepreneur is also a promoter of change and here there are many, and there are many opportunities to generate triple businesses involving the United Kingdom, Portugal and Brazil.

How did you see Lusophone communities in the UK during this time in the UK. These six weeks of daily contact with Portuguese and Brazilian entrepreneurs showed me that there is a lack of a catalyst to facilitate access to new markets and opportunities, a role that should be played, from my point of view, by the Chambers of Commerce of both Portugal and Brazil. But, surprisingly, they are much more tailored for maintaining the “status quo” and service the large companies rather than helping, proposing and creating conditions for the development of those who actually need them – the small and medium entrepreneurs. I

Fui igualmente surpreso pela quantidade de listas telefónicas, jornais e revistas luso-brasileiras, todas de pequenas tiragens e alcance. Imagino que a união destas, poderia trazer mais resultados económicos e força politica que defendesse os interesses da comunidade lusófona. Quanto ao potencial, ele é inegável.

Quais as razões do boom económico brasileiro? Quais são as áreas de oportunidade? As razões são inúmeras e tem todas a ver com a imensidão desta terra, seus recursos naturais e sua gente, que até há poucos anos vinha sendo politica e economicamente mal administrados. Como consequência do aumento do poder aquisitivo dos brasileiros, novos fornecedores entram no mercado e criam hábitos de consumo que abrem espaço a novos produtos. Existem oportunidades em todas as áreas profissionais sem exceção. A infraestrutura, energia, construção e indústria são segmentos que requerem muitos investimentos. Também o agronegócio vem se consolidando em um dos maiores setores de desenvolvimento do Brasil, por isso tenho recomendado aos potenciais

The reasons are numerous and it has all to do with the immensity of its land, its natural resources and its people, who until recently had been politically and economically mismanaged. As a result of the increased purchasing power of Brazilians, new suppliers have entered the market and created consumer habits that make room for new products. Opportunities exist in every profession, without exception. The infrastructure, energy, construction and industry segments still require a lot of investment. Also agribusiness has been consolidating into a major development sector in Brazil, so I have recommended potential investors to

Vários empresários portugueses estão entre os que se aproveitam deste boom e muitos mais poderiam fazê-lo, não fosse pelas informações deficientes que recebem. Por outro lado, também no Brasil e em Portugal existem poucos, mas eficientes profissionais conhecedores e preparados para este trabalho de assessoria, que facilitam a instalação de empresas brasileiras na Europa. Nos próximos meses estaremos fazendo algo semelhante em Londres com a parceria de empresários locais.

This is an attractive market for any entrepreneur. Brazil has been very good in attracting foreign investment. Many Portuguese are among the entrepreneurs who take advantage of this boom and many more could do so, if they had the proper information on how to do it. On the other hand, Brazil and Portugal there are few efficient and knowledgeable professionals prepared for this advisory work, which facilitates the installation of Brazilian companies in Europe. In the coming months we will be doing something similar in the United Kingdom with the partnership of local businessmen

Lusophone Federation to unite associations by Luís Costa Pires

Está a ser criada em Londres a Federação Lusófona, uma organização que pretende reunir e cimentar relações entre as várias associações de falantes da língua portuguesa no Reino Unido e as comunidades. A Ponte falou com Tozé Pereira, presidente da Comissão Instaladora

Ponte - Como nasceu a ideia de criar a Federação Lusófona?

How did the idea of creating the Lusophone Federation come up?

Tozé Pereira - Nasceu da necessidade da comunidade se organizar. A comunidade está a crescer a olhos vistos. Cada vez mais há pessoas com necessidade de comunicarem de se organizarem em grupos; não existe mais aquele conceito do emigrante que vem apenas para trabalhar, há necessidade de conviverem com os seus pares, com a comunidade que fala a mesma lingua e principalmente com a comunidade que os acolhe. Neste momento já existem oito associações lusófonas federadas e da nossa lista de convites já existem meia duzia de membros efectivos a colaborar

Quais os objectivos imediatos da organização?

What is the first goal of the Federation?

A integração das várias associações vai ajudar as comunidades a integrarem-se mais facilmente no país?

Um dos muitos objectivos é angariar fundos para a construção de instalações que para além da Federação irão albergar as associação que não possuem instalações próprias e que irão albergar também um grupo de teatro, um centro cultural, biblioteca e uma rádio.

The community is growing and there are more people who need to communicate and to organise in groups, there is no longer the concept of the immigrant who comes only to work, without the need to socialise with their peers, the community that speaks the same language and especially with the host community. Right now there are eight associations already joining the Federation and a few collaborators from our invitation list on board.

One of the many objectives of the Federation is to raise funds for the construction of facilities that, besides the Federation, will host any other association who doesn’t have its own space. We want it also to house a theater, a cultural center, a library and a radio.

Como vê o funcionamento actual das estruturas comunitárias no Reino Unido, nomeadamente a Portuguesa?

E aqui é que a Federação se impõe no sentido de estabelecer uma interactividade entre todas as associações, que obviamente queiram fazer parte dela, introduzi-las a novos incentivos, cativar financiamentos e investi-los nos projectos para tal criados.

Quais os grandes problemas a combater em termos da comunidade?

O problema fundamental de toda a comunidade é que ninguém acredita em ninguém. A credibilidade tem que ser construida. Temos que convidar quem já tenha feito melhor, não quem pense fazer melhor. O segredo é rodearmo-nos de pessoas tão competentes ou mais que nós e sermos humildes em aprender. O mérito está nos nossos actos, não nos cargos que desempenhamos. Temos que mudar os paradigmas.

How do you rate the current state of the Portuguese speaking community structures in the UK? As I mentioned, only three of the 15 Portuguese associations that exist operate as associations. Their activities are restricted, obviously, to their members. And that’s where the Federation is necessary, to establish an interaction between all the associations, who obviously want to be part of the process, to introduce them to new incentives, financing and help with investing in new projects.

What are the major problems to be tackled in terms of the community? The fundamental problem for the whole community is that no one believes in anyone. Credibility has to be built. We have to invite those who have done it better, not people who think they can do better. The secret is to be surrounded by competent people and learn to be humble. The merit lies in our actions, not in our positions. We have to change the paradigms.

Os planaltos contêm florestas de miombo e de montanha e uma espectacular floresta húmida no sopé de uma série de desfiladeiros calcários. Esta combinação de características únicas suportava outrora uma das mais densas populações de vida selvagem de toda a África, incluindo carnívoros carismáticos, herbívoros e cerca de 500 espécies de pássaros.

he Gorongosa National Park is situated within the southern boundary of the Great African Rift Valley in the heart of central Mozambique. The park is about 3,770 km2 and seasonal flooding and water logging of the valley, which is composed of a mosaic of different soil types, create a variety of distinct ecosystems. Grasslands are dotted with patches of acacia trees, savannah, dry forest on sands and seasonally rain-filled pans and termite hill thickets. The plateaus contain miombo and montane forests and a spectacular rain forest at the base of a series of limestone gorges.

This combination of unique features at one time supported some of the densest wildlife populations in all of Africa, including fascinating carnivores, herbivores and over 500 bird species.

Showcasing a breathtaking natural beauty, the Gorongosa Park is an inspiring place. Maybe that is the reason the Irish runner Nicolas North chose it to rest for a couple of days in the middle of the race he is doing through Mozambique. Computers that see as humans

José Jerónimo Rodrigues e Ricardo Cabral estão a levar a cabo esse estudo no estágio na Industrial Light & Magic e Qualcomm, após terminarem o seu doutoramento na Universidade norteamericana de Carnegie Mellon. “A visão por computador deveria providenciar o que o humano percepciona quando está a ver. A ideia de fazer um computador pensar e ver”, afirma Rodrigues. Os domínios de aplicação desta área vão desde sistemas de diagnóstico médico como a ecografia 3D, vídeo vigilância e segurança, carros autónomos, aplicações industriais e indústria cinematográfica ou tecnologias de assistência a idosos e deficientes, além do entretenimento, de que a consola XBox Kinect é exemplo.

The 55th BFI London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express, announced that this year’s Festival will open on Wednesday 12 October with the European premiere of 360, directed by Brazilian Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardener, Blindness). Meirelles is no stranger to the Festival after The Constant Gardener (for which Rachel Weisz later won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar) opened it in 2005. O Recentemente estive envolvido em um embate acalorado com um amigo que reside no Brasil, e que mostrava-se frustrado com minha decisão de não mais escrever canções em português desde que me mudei para UK

Papo vai, papo vem, veio a perigosa constatação, por parte dele, de que o idioma de Shakespeare não serviria para canções com “ginga”, como a brasileiríssima Bossa Nova ou mesmo o tradicional Samba. Fiquei com aquilo na cabeça mas, perdido em meio aos afazeres do dia-adia, acabei deixando o assunto morrer. Porém, coincidentemente, minha produtora musical (Sonatta Music) acabou de entrar em um projeto que prevê a criação de canções que mesclam New Jazz com... Bossa Nova, e em inglês. Não é algo novo. Há muitos brasileiros mundo afora, notadamente nos Estados Unidos e na Europa, cantando ritmos tipicamente brasileiros e em inglês, uma língua internacional que, gostem ou não os puristas, é indubitavelmente “democrática”. E democracia é a palavra-chave, pois hoje um artista que lança seu conteúdo online não está mais restrito às fronteiras do seu país ou da sua língua. A sociedade, como um todo, também sente os mesmos efeitos, com cada mais interações promovidas entre diversas culturas e, claro, idiomas. Entender e aceitar isso - é questão, digamos, de bom-senso. Enfim, escrever uma bossa-nova em inglês, que é uma língua com métrica curta e sonoridade completamente diferente do português, será para mim um desafio estimulante, mas ao mesmo tempo uma oportunidade de ouro para provar a este meu amigo, também músico, que o o idioma bretão pode, sim, ter ginga. Recently I was involved in a debate with a long time friend, living in Brazil, who was feeling frustrated with my decision to not write songs in Portuguese since I moved to the UK

The discussion was also about how good traditional Brazilian rhythms, like Bossa Nova and Samba, could sound when sung in English. That’s a tricky subject, because ultimately it will end up being personal taste. But, fortunately, my Music Production Company (Sonatta Music) was just commissioned to write some songs in the New Jazz-Bossa Nova genre - in English. Frankly, there is nothing new about that. There are many Brazilian artists, mainly in the USA and Europe, performing Brazilian rhythms in English. Some purists may turn their backs on English, but how can one criticise an effort to make lyrics, let’s say, “democratic”? There is a point in there - and commercial music is becoming more and more international these days. The faster one acknowledges that, the better. Besides, with the growing presence of the internet in pretty much everything an artist needs to do to promote himself, from releasing new songs to engaging with different audiences all over the globe, it seems to me that embracing English is a smart move. I am not saying that there isn’t space left for songs in any given language, but one must be aware that if the goal is to make your music accessible to the largest number of listeners, English should be considered as a practical shortcut. Nevertheless, I am aware that there are no rights and wrongs in this matter, and each one is entitled to their own views. That’s why I would like to invite you all to join the debate. Os sujeitos das suas experiências quando assegurados que não seriam responsabilizados pelos seus actos permitiam-se a actos grotescos que normalmente não fariam. (É claro que ninguém foi machucado e os gritos de dor eram de um actor que enganava os sujeitos a pensar que era real). O filme brasileiro Tropa de Elite abre com uma citação de Milgram: ‘A psicologia social deste século ensinou uma importante lição: usualmente não é o carácter de uma pessoa que determina como ela age, mas sim a situação em que ela se encontra’. Ou seja, agimos consoante o que pensamos que é o nosso papel social. As duas partes deste filme retratam a sociedade brasileira, mas poderia ser qualquer outra. Todos agem como se estivessem acima da lei e nunca serão responsabilizados pelos seus actos levando a sua luta por poder a extremismos: A polícia é corrupta e vende armas aos traficantes, os traficantes controlam o seu bairro com armas e os políticos são corruptos e apenas agem para perpetuar o seu poder (mais votos e medidas populistas) Soa familiar? Os motins do passado Agosto aconteceram porque quem estava nas ruas foi desresponsabilizado pelos seus actos (pelo menos, assim pensavam pela atitude da polícia) transformandose assim em criminosos capazes de cometer as maiores atrocidades possíveis. Em vez de tentarmos achar alguma causa económica para o sucedido, basta pensarmos que este é um problema que atravessa toda a sociedade e concentrarmo-nos em construir uma sociedade mais justa onde ninguém, seja qual for o seu papel, está acima da lei. E trocar a luta pelo poder pela luta pela felicidade. Utópico? Pois claro, mas não custa sonhar.

The people, being assured that their acts wouldn’t be judged by the law, commited grotesque acts that, normally, they wouldn’t commit. (Of course no one got hurt and the screams of pain were just from an actor fooling the participants). The Brazilian movie “Elite Squad” opens with a Milgram quote. “The social psychology of this year taught us an important lesson: usually, it is not the character of a person that determines how he acts, but the situation he is in”. That means that we end up acting according to what we believe is our social role. Both parts of the movie show us the Brazilian society, but could show any other. Everyone acts as if they were above the law and will never be held responsible for their actions, taking their fight for power to the extreme: the police are corrupt and sell guns to drug dealers; the drug dealers control their neighborhood with guns and the politicians are also corrupt and act only to perpetuate their power (more votes with populist politics). Does this sound familiar? Last August’s riots in London happened because those in the street felt they were not being held responsible for their actions (or so they thought at the moment misjudging the passive stance of the police), turning into criminals capable of the worst atrocities. Instead of trying to find some economic cause for what happened, we should instead think of this as a problem that crosses all society and concentrate on building a fairer society, where no one, whatever their role in society is, is above the law and we should exchange the power struggle for a happiness struggle. Utopic? Of course, but it’s always amazing to be able to dream.

Brazilian leads BMW in DTM comeback POR: Mike Vlcek

Após quase vinte anos de ausência, recentemente a montadora alemã BMW anunciou que em 2012 estará de volta ao campeonato alemão de carros de turismo, conhecido como DTM

ara os que não estão familiarizados, trata-se de um campeonato fortíssimo, que envolve ainda as tradicionais rivais MercedesBenz e Audi, e que também abriga pilotos do quilate de Mika Hakkinen (bicampeão de F1), David Coulthard, Paul di Resta (atual campeão e hoje na F1) e Ralf Schumacher, só para citar alguns que correm ou recentemente passaram por lá. Os carros do DTM, embora parecidos com modelos de rua, na prática são completamente diferentes. A BMW, por exemplo, trará para as pistas uma bolha baseada no desportivo M3, e os números são de impressionar: 480 cavalos em um V8 aspirado de 4 litros, capaz de levar o carro de 0 a 100 km/h em menos de três segundos e de impulsioná-lo a

300 km/h. Não por acaso, o DTM é a categoria que possui os carros mais velozes do mundo com motor na dianteira. Há ainda um elemento verde e amarelo neste feliz retorno dos bávaros ao seu campeonato nacional: o curitibano Augusto Farfus Jr., há anos piloto oficial da BMW no Mundial de Carros de Turismo (WTCC), será um dos titulares na nova empreitada, ao lado do inglês Andy Priaulx. Não é pouca coisa, uma vez que os alemães estão encarando este retorno ao DTM como uma missão tão importante quanto foi a entrada na Formula

1 em 2005. Dentro da Alemanha, o DTM possui uma exposição de media incrível, e apanhar das montadoras rivais sempre se reflete em redução de vendas. Portanto, ao torcedor apaixonado por automobilismo e que anda meio desanimado com os representantes do Brasil na Fórmula 1, fica a dica: olho vivo no DTM em 2012, pois a possibilidade de ouvirmos o Hino Nacional no alto do pódio tende a ser bem maior do que na F1...

After an absence of almost 20 years, BMW is set to return to the German Tourism Cars Championship, known as the DTM

he company recently unveiled the new M3, which will feature a normally aspirated 4.0 litre engine capable of producing over 480 bhp, enough to make it crack 62 mph in about three seconds and reach speeds in excess of 186 mph. Impressive, but it is worth noting that the competition will be tough, as its main rivals, MercedesBenz and Audi, are also expected to raise their game for next year’s season, when new regulations will be introduced in order to cut costs in the series. The DTM is taken very seriously in Germany and represents the

pinnacle of local motor sport. The championship is also home for some of the world’s finest drivers, for example Scotsmen Paul di Resta (current DTM Champion and now racing in F1), David Coulthard, local favourite Ralf Schumacher and former two times F1 champion Mika Hakkinen. But there is a Brazilian element in this recipe: Augusto Farfus Jr., born in Curitiba, who will be one of the drivers to lead BMW’s comeback to the series, alongside British driver Andy Priaulx. Farfus has been with BWM for over five years now as an official driver on the WTCC (World Tourism Car Championship). The move, seen

as natural by the Brazilian, is probably the crucial moment of his career: “You always need new challenges in life. That is why I cannot wait for my debut in this series”, said Farfus during the car’s launch in Munich last month. One thing is for sure: after their unsuccessful adventure in Formula 1, which ended abruptly when the company decided to pull the plug at the end of the 2009 season, BMW is eager to deliver serious performance on the DTM, because a new failure would represent a direct hit on sales inside Germany, and that would hurt not only BMW’s finances, but its pride as well. So, if you are Brazilian and like to watch motor sport, keep a close eye on the DTM next year, especially when things do not look that promising in the Formula One grid...

Diets and physical exercise Esta provado e comprovado. É impossivel emagrecer saudavelmente sem praticar atividade fÍsica. Podemos diminuir significativamente as calorias de nossa dieta, mas se não praticarmos exercício físicos regularmente (no mínimo 3 vezes por semana), não iremos metabolizar, ou seja, “queimar” gordura (ácidos graxos). A atividade diária normal somente irá metabolizar o glicogênio, substância encontrada em nossos músculos e fígado que serve de substrato imediato de energia (utilizada antes da gordura). Consequentemente, isso também irá acarretar uma redução de peso corpóreo, porém errônea, pois será perdida somente massa magra (músculo), e não gordura. Quanto mais músculo (massa magra) e menos gordura (massa gorda) tivemos em nosso corpo, mais calorias iremos usar para realizarmos nossas atividades cotidianas e menos calorias iremos depositar, facilitando o emagrecimento. A queima da gordura é realizada com atividade física aeróbica, que pode ser caminhadas, ginástica aeróbica, bicicleta, jump fit, step, dança de salão, aulas de danca entre diversas outras. Para ganhar massa muscular, o melhor são os exercicios de resistência, como musculação. Procure alternar aerobicos e exercícios de resistencia para melhorar sua composição corporal, isto e, a proporção entre gordura e músculos no seu corpo. E não descuide do consumo de proteinas (cerca de 20% do total de calorias da dieta).

The more muscle (lean mass) and less fat (mass fat) we have in our body, the more calories we use to perform our daily activities and putting fewer calories in will facilitate weight loss. Burning fat is done with aerobic exercise, which can be done by walking, aerobics, cycling, jumping fit, step, dance, dance classes, among many others. To gain muscle mass, the best exercises are resistance exercises like weight training. Try to alternate between aerobic and resistance exercises to improve your body composition, that means, the ratio between fat and muscle in your body. E agora que finalmente vou ter férias e ainda tenho esperanças de apanhar alguns dias de praia, espero poder usar saias curtas e estou muito preocupada com o aspecto das minhas pernas. Gostaria de saber de algum medicamento que possa usar para melhorar as minhas varizes. Dr. Justino Monteiro - Bem, Marta, como você bem refere o seu problema são as varizes que, pela sua descrição, parece ser superficiais. São duas as formas principais de varizes: as profundas e as superficiais. As primeiras pouco ou quase nada se vêem, pelo menos no início, mas podem causar sensação de peso, dores e comichão nas pernas; na maior parte dos casos o tratamento é uma cirurgia em que se remove a veia que não funciona. As varizes superficiais, essas sim, podem ser tratadas, especialmente na fase inicial, com tecnicas muito simples e muitas vezes com bom resultado que é o que realmente fazemos: a escleroterapia. É uma forma de secar as veias e eliminar aquele aspecto estético desagradavel nas pernas. Essa podia ser a solução pelo problema que a Marta me coloca. Mas quer opte ou não pela escleroterapia é importante ficar com estas informações simples e cumpri las rigorosamente. Faça exercício fisico, duas ou três vezes por semana, mantenha as pernas elevadas sempre que estiver sentada, use meias elásticas especialmente quado vai manter em pé por muito tempo. Se quiser ainda fazer um estudo mais profundo das suas veias pode fazer um exame que se chama doppler e que permite examinar todas as veias das suas pernas. Justino Monteiro MD - Well, Martha, as you said, your problem is varicose veins which by your description seem to be superficial.There are two main forms of varicose veins: the deep and superficial. The first can barely be seen, at least at first, but can cause a heavy feeling, pain and itching in the legs. In most cases, the treatment is a surgery that removes the vein that does not work. Superficial varicose veins can be treated, especially in the initial phase, with simple techniques and often with good results. A technique that we perform is sclerotherapy. It’s a way to dry and remove the veins creating unsightly legs. This could be the solution for the problem Martha describes. But whether or not you opt for sclerotherapy, it is important to note the following suggestions and do these rigorously: physical exercise two or three times a week, keep your legs elevated whenever sitting, and try to use special elastic stockings when you stand for a long time. But, if you still want to have a more thorough study of your veins you can have the Doppler, a study that allows the examination of all the veins in your legs. Dr. Justino Monteiro . Spiritual Awakening Muitos são os que passam pelo despertar espiritual sem saber o que se está a passar, pois não tem muito sentido lógico. Existem muitos sinais físicos e emocionais do processo do acordar espiritual, muitas pessoas recorrem ao médico pensado que estão doentes, mas após vários exames, não aparecem causas aparentes para a suposta “doença”. Mas na realidade é como sentir os sinais de uma constipação ou gripe, temos certos sinais e sabemos como reagir para fazer com que eles não se desenvolvam. O mesmo acontece aqui. Com a ajuda dos Espíritos Guias, criei uma lista de alguns dos sintomas que podemos sentir quando estamos a ser despertados do nosso sono espiritual profundo e que vou enunciar durante esta e as próximas edições: 1. Mudança nos padrões de sono: Inquietação, pés quentes, acordar duas ou três vezes por noite. sentindo-se cansado depois de acordar e sonolência durante o dia. Conselho: aceite os novos padrões de sono e não se preocupe em ter que dormir as 8 horas de sono. O quanto dormir neste momento é o suficiente. Se acordar durante a noite e não conseguir voltar a dormir imediatamente, use esses momentos de vigília para meditar, ler poesia, escrever no seu diário ou olhar para a lua. Seu corpo irá ajustar-se ao novo padrão.

Many go through a spiritual awakening without even realising it, for it’s not logical. There are many physical and emotional signs in this awakening process and many people go to a doctor thinking they might be sick, but, after several exams, they can’t see any cause to the so called “disease”. But in reality it’s like feeling the symptoms of a cold or fever, we have certain signs and we know how to react to them to make them stop. The same happens here. 1. Change in the sleep patterns: anxiety, warm feet, waking up two or three times a night, feeling tired after you waking up and feeling sleepy all day. Advice: accept the new sleeping patterns and don’t worry if you don’t sleep your 8 hours. What you do sleep will be enough. If you wake up during the night and can’t get back to sleep, use those moments to meditate, read poetry, write your diary or look at the moon. Contacts with friends, advertisements, registration at employment agency and a becoming member of the Internet job sites are some ways to find work. A CV in hand, equivalence of qualifications in the country you are residing in, filling out forms, references and experience (paid or voluntary) help in times where you are competing for a job. The Institute for Employment and Learning (Job Centre Plus), a sort of branch of the British government for assistance in finding employment, has terminals job offers (Jobpoints). The job search can also be made online or by phone 0845 606 0234 (Jobseekers Direct). The Job Centre also manages requests for certain social benefits, as the benefits for those who are looking for work (Jobseekers’ Allowance). There are also several sites and employment agencies that help in the search, like www.gumtree.com, www.reed.co.uk, totaljobs.com, among others. Abras is ready to assist its members in search of work, doing things such as drafting CVs, giving information about the equivalence of the diploma by NARIC, how to contact the Job Centre Plus, and it has a wall of job opportunities.
