ABOUT MARBURN Founded in 1981, Marburn Academy is an independent day school devoted to serving the educational needs of bright students who learn differently due to dyslexia, executive function difficulties, and attention issues. Marburn is accredited by the Independent School Association of the Central States (ISACS) and is one of only 19 schools globally to have its language instruction program accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).

Dear Marburn Academy Community, Thank you for reviewing our 2025 Impact Report. This year has been defined by leadership and empathy, demonstrated across every division thanks to the commitment of our students and the generosity of our supporters.

In the pages ahead, you’ll see this initiative in action: •

The High School Highlights feature seniors leading major events and embracing physical challenges through the Voyageurs program (whitewater rafting, skiing). Their leadership culminated in the Masquerade Prom and numerous academic distinctions.

The Middle Division focused on growth and service, building foundational bonds and devoting themselves to the community during #GiveBack Day, proving they are active, contributing citizens.

•

The Lunch Bunch and Buddy Bench initiative is a powerful example of student-led empathy, where 5th-grade girls planned and built a permanent symbol of friendship and anti-bullying on the playground.

Lower Division

Supporting Each Other: Students Create Belonging The final year of Lower Division is a pivotal time. Recognizing the growing need for 5th-grade girls to practice navigating complex emotions and building strong friendships ahead of middle school, Lower Division held weekly “Lunch Bunch” gatherings. These sessions provided a crucial, informal space for students to share a meal, strengthen their social-emotional skills, and discuss the common challenges of pre-adolescence.

It was in one of these supportive sessions that an incredible student-led project was born.

Inspired by a classmate working on her Girl Scout Bronze Award, the girls turned their focus to community impact.

They quickly agreed on a powerful and practical idea: to create a permanent Buddy Bench for the playground—a welcoming symbol of friendship and antibullying.

The girls embraced the challenge, taking the lead to develop the plan, seek approval from the Head of School, and organize the necessary materials.

This successful collaboration involved working with teachers and staff, culminating in a generous donation

from Robert Dean and Eve Schmid, who contributed large stones from their family farm to build the foundation. During the summer, several of the students returned to campus to personally paint and decorate the stones.

Today, the Buddy Bench stands on the playground, a living testament to their initiative. It offers a clear, accessible space for any child feeling alone to sit and communicate, inviting classmates to approach and connect.

We are immensely proud of the leadership and empathy shown by our 5th graders. This initiative, which began in a simple lunch setting, has created a beautiful and enduring symbol of friendship for the entire Marburn community.

Middle Division

A Year of Impact and Growth The 2024-2025 school year for the Middle Division was packed with transformative experiences that built confidence, leadership, and lasting bonds.

The year launched with great energy, welcoming fifteen new students and two new teachers, Ms. Haaser and Ms. Worthen. We immediately established strong foundations with the sixthgrade camp at Nuhop, helping our newest members build essential social connections and trust with peers and teachers. Early highlights included the spectacular return of the Middle Division Talent Show, where students proudly showcased their skills in music, dance, and performance.

Connecting Learning and Community In November, the annual Book Fair fostered a love for literacy and helped fund a major educational opportunity: the division’s trip to Washington, D.C.!

In January, the Voyageurs trip to Snow

Trails provided a unique challenge.

Many students experienced skiing or snowboarding for the first time, learning to conquer new skills and manage complex tasks with expert support.

This experience is about proving to themselves they can master difficult challenges.

The most inspiring day was April’s successful #GiveBack Day. Students demonstrated phenomenal leadership and teamwork by volunteering across the local area: • Serving the community at the New Albany Food Pantry, Open Shelter, and Avalon Retirement Home.

• Aiding nonprofits by building furniture at the Furniture Bank and assisting at Dreams on Horseback.

• Supporting the environment at Lettuce Works and Grange Audubon.

The year concluded with a joyful final dance in May, with students transforming the Flexatorium for a night of celebration.

This past year was a testament to the Middle Division’s vibrant spirit and commitment to holistic student development.

This deep community engagement allowed students to connect their learning with the wider world, proving they are 3

High School

Moments of Leadership and Perseverance During the 2024–2025 school year, the high schoolers took on meaningful leadership roles that enriched the school community and demonstrated their commitment to collaboration, creativity, and school spirit. From organizing major student events to leading outdoor learning experiences, the 2024-2025 high school students set a strong example of initiative and teamwork.

Through the Voyageurs program, high schoolers participated in two major trips that emphasized leadership and experiential learning. In the fall, students traveled to Ace Adventure Resort in West Virginia, where they experienced whitewater rafting, hiking, campfire gatherings, and a high ropes course designed to foster teamwork and confidence. This whitewater rafting trip was the first for the high schoolers and served as a pivotal point for some, pushing them to new boundaries and self-confidence.

During the winter, students continued their adventures at Snow Trails, where they participated in skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Both trips provided opportunities for students to build 4

connections, develop leadership skills, and strengthen class unity outside the classroom.

The Student Advisory Council also played an essential role in shaping the school year’s events and activities. Taking a lead in planning Spirit Week, creating themes and activities that promoted enthusiasm and school pride across all grade levels.

They also organized the annual Prom, choosing a Masquerade theme and contributing to every detail of the event— from estimating costs and selecting the venue to designing and constructing the decorative photo backdrop. In addition, the advisory council helped plan the Winter Formal, themed Candy Land, by assisting with budgeting, decorations, and setup to ensure a fun and festive celebration for everyone.

Ending the school year, the 2024-2025 graduating class awarded four seniors with National Honor Society distinctions.

Five of the graduating seniors will continue their education and head to a higher education organization to further their academics and set goals for their future career paths.

Specials

Beyond the Books: A Record-Breaking Year in Specials and Athletics

At Marburn Academy, we believe in educating the whole child. While we are committed to building academic ability, we also know that confidence, creativity, and camaraderie often blossom outside of the traditional classroom. The 2024– 2025 school year was a landmark one, with students participating in record numbers across our Specials and Athletic Programs, making incredible memories and achieving new heights!

THE ARTS TAKE CENTER STAGE Our students dove into the arts with unprecedented enthusiasm, showcasing their talents on stage and in the studio.

Drama: Blockbuster Engagement The Theatre Department had an outstanding year, demonstrating a dramatic increase in student involvement.

• More than 50% of Lower Division students were stars in the fall musical, HATS!, a clear highlight of the season.

• The Middle Division and High School production of Shrek Jr. also saw a fantastic turnout, with over 50 students embracing the swamp life.

• Overall, theatre involvement reached more than 40% of the entire student body during the 2024–25 season!

Music: Harmonizing for Grandfriends Lower Division students charmed and delighted their audience with a Patriotic Program for Grandfriends Day in November. The performance included musical selections from HATS! and beautifully showcased the students’ developing skills in partner songs, rounds, and harmonies.

Inaugural Arts-a-Palooza: A Night of Creativity This past year featured the launch of our very first Arts-a-Palooza, an evening designed to shine a spotlight on student creativity across multiple disciplines. It was a huge success, featuring: • Visual Arts: Students curated and displayed select works from their art classes, including an impressive exhibition from our Artist in Residence Program.

• Performing Arts: Attendees enjoyed dynamic live demonstrations from the Choir and High School acting students.

• Technology: Middle and High School students exhibited compelling 2D and 3D modeling projects, blurring the lines between art and design.

TECH AND DESIGN INNOVATION Our students proved that advanced design software is an extension of their creativity. In 2D and 3D Design, students produced sophisticated digital renderings of the Marburn building, demonstrating their proficiency in advanced software and their sharp, creative problem-solving skills.

RECORD-BREAKING ATHLETICS Our students brought the same energy and commitment to the playing field, making 2024-2025 the strongest year for our sports programs yet.

• Athletics participation reached the highest level in Marburn’s history!

• 35 students participated in at least one athletic program, a testament to the growth and strength of our entire athletic community.

This year’s achievements underscore Marburn Academy’s commitment to providing enriching, confidence-building opportunities for every student. We can’t wait to see how they build on this momentum in the years to come!

Why We Give

A Family’s Determination: How Marburn Changed Lydia’s Life When Cathy Kelley noticed her daughter, Lydia, struggling to keep up in school, she knew something wasn’t right. Lydia was bright, curious, and full of potential — but as the lessons became harder, her spark began to fade. Cathy was told attending an affluent public school would ensure Lydia would receive all the support she needed for her academic differences, but that promise never came true.

Lydia began attending Marburn’s afterschool tutoring program, where she was finally met with understanding and patience. But even with the right support, balancing public school during the day and tutoring after hours became overwhelming. Lydia’s exhaustion and frustration reached a breaking point — she began missing school, grew ill from the stress, and one day, in despair, she ran away.

Then a neighbor/friend mentioned Marburn Academy’s Free Early Reading Screenings, and that one conversation changed everything. After the screening,

“That was it for me,” Cathy says. “I knew I couldn’t let her continue to suffer. She needed to be somewhere that truly understood her.”

Cathy turned to Dr. Steven Guy, whose compassionate team quickly recognized Lydia’s struggles and helped guide the Kelleys through the next steps. It wasn’t easy — but it was the beginning of a new chapter.

When Lydia started full-time at Marburn Academy in fifth grade, everything changed. For the first time, she felt safe, supported, and capable. The teachers saw her potential and believed in her even when she didn’t believe in herself.

Today, Lydia is thriving — she’s a member of the National Honor Society, plays volleyball, and, most importantly, has rediscovered her joy and confidence.

She is also planning for her future and graduating from Marburn in 2027.

The Kelley Family are beyond appreciative of the work being done at Marburn, the family recognizes that donating to Marburn’s mission annually will allow other students to achieve success and grow personally, just like Lydia. *Thank you to Lydia and The Kelleys for sharing their journey and supporting students who learn differently!
