Barbara Crafton’s message is “To Everything There Is a Season: Life in Stages.” Just like the endless harmonic changes and improvisatory melodies that are a part of jazz, so too is there an art to creatively navigating the everchanging seasons of life. While there, Intersections began to partner with a Puerto Rico-based NGO called Waves Ahead (wavesahead.org/programs). Everyone is invited to this fundraiser to support both organizations in their work rebuilding Puerto Rico, including helping its LGBT community. Donations begin at $100. Fred Meads Director of Children’s Choir

CYF CORNER WELCOME BACK, FRED MEADS! Fred Meads will be back at Marble this season to direct the Children’s Choir (2nd-6th Grade) and start a Youth Choir (7th-12th Grade). I am so excited to return to Marble Church. When I was directing the choir several years ago, I was truly inspired by the uplifting sprit that resonated here. Each Sunday was a special day filled with joy, love and beautiful singing. I know there are many talented children and youth at Marble and I look forward to leading them again in song. New this fall will be a choir for youth in grades 7-12 who love to sing! More details will follow. I encourage all children and youth to come and try out the choirs on Sunday, September 16. — Fred Meads Fred is the Director of Education for the Princeton Girlchoir, a choral organization of over 300 singers and Music Director for the newly formed Princeton Boychoir. He was previously the Director of Vocal Studies at the American Boychoir School (2009-2017) where he directed the training choir, led ear-training and taught voice lessons, directed music camps and assisted in preparing boys for numerous professional orchestra engagements. He received the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Ithaca College, NY and the Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He completed his Kodály training at Capital University in Columbus, OH.

Ecclesia – A Very Special Church Family

By Betty Costa Being part of the Ecclesia Ministries of Madison Square Park, which began 11 years ago on Pentecost Sunday, has become a joyful experience for me. An outdoor ministry, it is all about love and welcome. At first I felt self-conscious worshiping in public for anyone passing to see (no back of the church pews to hide in), but thankfully the focus shifted away from my feelings to the beauty of our surroundings, the service itself, and most of all to the congregants. At the beginning of each service Father Seamus Campbell, Pastor of the MSP congregation, reminds us that we gather each week to remember one thing: God loves us no matter who we are or where we are on the journey. At the service, we share Communion, honor birthdays each month, and pray for each other. After worship the “second meal”, the brown bag lunch Marble volunteers (like Lorny Pate, AnnMarie Edwards, and even some children from CYF) prepare every second Sunday, is served. Participation is often encouraged and worshippers (including me) have read

scripture, gathered chairs, and helped bring the altar to and from the park. From time to time we’ve also been fortunate to have another congregant play piano for us when we are indoors because of bad weather. A few months ago on the Feast of the Ascension, I had the privilege of attending a very special service at our neighbor’s, Church of the Transfiguration. Two of the “regular’ Madison Square Park Ecclesia congregants were being confirmed and one of them was being baptized. I had been pleased and honored to be invited by Father Seamus and felt like a proud relative seeing Philip and Billy receive these sacraments. I’ve grown attached to my second church family and am grateful for how much this ministry has blessed me. Marble partners in the Ecclesia Ministry with Church of the Transfiguration, St. Paul and St. Andrew Methodist Church, Holy Apostles, Madison Avenue Baptist Church, and St. Peter’s, Chelsea. A VIEW FROM THE CHOIR LOFT FESTIVAL OF VOICES NEEDS YOUR VOICE AND YOUR TALENT! The Festival of Voices is a community of gifted and dedicated volunteer singers who truly make a difference in the Marble worshipping community. The choir presents a wide range of choral music, including Renaissance motets, contemporary classics, American folk and spirituals arrangements, world music and timeless treasures of the vocal repertoire. But it’s the way FOV’s ministry through music has touched so many people that keeps us coming back each week, committed to honing our craft and pursuing musical excellence! GIVING BACK IT’S WORTH IT Susan Stoute, a Marble member since 1978, has made volunteering a big part of how she gives back. In the past she helped with the clothing drives, pouring coffee or serving dinners. Deaf Contact, a division of HelpLine, was her love. She accumulated 400 hours of service and was given a humanitarian trophy, which made her feel like an Oscar winner. These days Susan greets at the Welcome Center, helps with #WeWo: Wednesday Worship visuals, and knits with the Prayer Shawl Ministry. “No matter what I do at Marble, I feel it is well worth it!” – Susan Stoute

Reflections from the Editor

By Karla Fritsch What does a bald eagle have in common with an iPhone? Recently, they both brought me lessons in connection. I’m new to the smartphone, but it’s already opened up my life in many ways. I had a wonderful experience when my nephew Kris and his girlfriend Gaby were competing in the USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals in Cleveland. I was able to instantly track them through an app. My mom and my sister Karine didn’t have the app so I’d text them with updates. Kris’ mom, my sister Kristi, was in Cleveland and during the race texted and sent pictures to his brother, sister and me. (p.s. Gaby won the women’s race!) We were scattered in New York, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio – and even Latvia (my niece was travelling there) – and yet we were connected. In a way, it felt like we were all together. In July I had the gift of a different kind of connection. I was sitting on a pier in Maine when something was flying toward me, low and slow. It was a bald eagle. I’ve seen eagles before, but usually at a distance and looking quite small even through binoculars. This eagle was flying slightly above my head. I’m a photographer, I could have taken good photos. Yet, I chose to use my eyes rather than a lens. I connected to that eagle, being to being. It made the moment even more magical. I had a similar encounter with a buck. That same week I was in Acadia National Park and was the lead in a string of cars when I saw a buck on the edge of the road. I stopped, especially in awe because I haven’t seen many deer with antlers. Since I was in the park and drivers behind me also saw him, I could have easily pulled out my camera. I didn’t. I looked

straight into the buck’s eyes and he looked straight back at me. It wasn’t long, but it seemed like time stood still. These different moments have had me thinking about how I connect with others and with life around me. Technology is a blessing that can connect us no matter what state or country we’re in. Yet, how deep are our connections? Of course that depth varies – we’ll have a stronger bond with friends and family than with strangers, but I believe as we work on strengthening our connections to those in our inner circle, it’s imperative to create moments of connection even with people we’ll never see again. It’s especially tricky in the city. We can be crammed together on the subway, sharing a similar experience, yet usually don’t want to look each other in the eye. However, there are brief moments we can connect in a deeper way – maybe, as you’re saying thank you, it’s actually looking into the eyes of the nice person who stepped out of the way so you could exit the train. All of this has also made me think about the depth of my connection with God. When I feel grounded in God it probably makes it easier to have a deeper connection to everyone around me. And when I’m open to the opportunities I have to connect with others – whether family members who live far away or my fellow subway riders or even an NYC squirrel – then that circles around and deepens my connection to God.

BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE Through September 9 This year Marble hopes to reach 300 at-risk children with new backpacks and school supplies. Marble Fights Hunger — Please support our continuous food drive by donating CANNED FOODS for Icahn House East (a temporary shelter for homeless mothers.) Leave food at the 29th Street Reception area, the Fifth Ave Narthex or the Marble Loft. Nutritious, canned/bottled items only. We encourage everyone to bring something with them every time they come to Marble! Bowery Mission — Join other Marble members as we serve dinner to the homeless. The Bowery Mission provides more than 1,000 meals per day to poor and homeless men, women, and children. Used Eyeglasses — Donate used glasses and sunglasses which are given to The Lion’s Club who recycles the glasses and distributes them in developing countries. PLEASE NOTE — Scaffolding has been placed in front of 276 Fifth Ave to make repairs to the building. NYC building law mandates that scaffolding extend twenty feet beyond the building in order to protect pedestrians, which means it also covers the entrance to the Marble Loft and stretches to the northern edge of the Sanctuary. The entrances to the church, Loft and offices are still accessible and all programs will continue in these spaces. At this time the building management has not indicated how long the scaffolding will be up.
