Thoughts about Christ
During my summer sabbatical, I spent a lot of time in prayerful discernment about where I want us to go together as a community of faith this year. And, I kept coming back to our starting point, which is always Jesus. As scripture says, He “is the alpha and the omega” for us (Revelation 22:13), the beginning and the end of who and what we are as Christians. So, throughout this program year I want to focus with you on Christology (which literally means “thoughts about Christ”). but the truth is that all scripture ultimately helps us identify, understand, and deepen our relationship with The Messiah. Why is this important? It’s important because in our world, too often “Christianity” is wrongly associated with fundamentalism, exclusivity, Dr. Michael Brown political partisanship, judgmentalism, and all sorts of phobias directed toward persons who are misunderstood and thus discounted. None of that has any point of contact with who Jesus was, how He related to others, what He taught, or the principles He lived for and died for. The world needs a corrected understanding of Christianity, and that cannot occur without a proper understanding of Jesus. So, I invite you this program year to become “Jesus students,” which ultimately enhances what it means to be “Christians” (“those who are like Christ”). Let me also take a moment to welcome on board Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton and Daryl Paul Lobban whose ministries will have Christ-like impact and influence on our church family. I am thankful for the way that you have welcomed me into the Marble family over the past few weeks. I have enjoyed meeting some, and I cannot wait to meet you all! I am especially excited to walk and learn alongside you as we do life and ministry together. I will be serving as a pastoral advisor to Connection (20s & 30s) and the Youth Ministry. I am truly excited to see what God is going to do through us. To give you a little of my background, I am a 3rd generation preacher in the Holiness-Pentecostal tradition, born to two Jamaican immigrants in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn, NY. I initially started college as a dance and biochemistry major at Long Island University and then heard the call into the ministry during my sophomore year and switched to Nyack College. Although I do not dance anymore, I am a self-appointed dance critic and you will see many of my critiques in the comment section of The New York Times Dance Review. After working as a youth pastor at my home church in Brooklyn for a few
years, I moved to Boston where I was a youth and family pastor for an AME church, interim pastor for a Baptist church, and associate director for a state-wide ecumenical organization. While in Boston I graduated from the Boston University School of Theology (Go Terriers). However, the best decision I made was marrying my best friend and beautiful companion, Shavonne, on August 26, 2016. She is an amazing psychologist in the Boston area. As a part-time Associate in Ministry, I will be commuting from Boston at least twice a week, and look forward to connecting especially with the teens and young adults of Marble. I look forward to seeing how we can continue making safe spaces for everyone to live their best lives in the light of Jesus Christ. Thank you for your hospitality so far, truly God’s love and joy is among you all. I am looking forward to getting to know you better.

Children in grades first through sixth will be participating in a new curriculum based on interaction, different learning styles and a rotational model. (Pre-K and Kindergarten will continue with Godly Play). Each unit is taught for three consecutive Sundays by Workshop Leaders. By Karla Fritsch I’m feeling adrift in the fog. I’ve lost one of my dearest friends, someone so many of you know. Chef Ron. It still feels so unreal. It’s hard to write about. Those of you who have been part of the Marble Community in the 1980s, 90s & early 00s, know of Ron’s & his kitchen crew’s absolute Ministry through the meals they created and served, plus so much more. Their first ingredient was always love. Ron was also a great teacher, whether teaching his crew specific culinary skills they were interested in – or squatting down beside the table teaching someone how to eat a lobster at the all-church lobster fest. It’s appropriate that I’m feeling symbolically lost in fog since the only time I’ve actually been lost in the fog was on Ron’s boat in Maine. Years ago Stuart Cole, Gary Thompson, Judy Tulin & I were visiting him in Eastport and were unexpectedly socked in by fog – with no satellite. Captain Ron was calm as he instructed us to look carefully for rocks, logs and other boats, and to listen for a fog horn which would help him get his bearings. It wasn’t until we were back on land that he let on how concerned he had been. Ron’s death came out of the blue, just like that fog in Maine. A lot of life is like that isn’t it?! So, when fog is all around, what can help? GPS. But, for the type of fog I’m currently in, I’m not talking about a Global Positioning System. G – GRATITUDE I thank God that Ron was part of my life. More than being part of my Marble Community for 27 years, even more than being a really special friend, he was and will always be an important part of the family I created for myself in NYC. I’m grateful for one of the gifts wrapped into Ron’s friendship, which was being known. Years ago when my apartment was broken into and my camera was stolen, within days Ron presented me with a new camera. A nice gift no matter what, yet the true gift was when he said, “You’re happy when you’re taking pictures.” That was before I had started making cards out of my photos. Over and over again, he showed that he knew me. I’m grateful that Ron introduced me to Maine, the place that restores my soul like no other. That reminds me, fog isn’t all bad – this summer I would report to Ron about the awe-inspiring views as I watched the mountains and bay play hide and seek through fog banks. He said he missed those mountains. P – PRAYER Ron was someone I really leaned on. He was a good listener and kept reminding me he was praying for me. He also supported me through forms of
living prayer – like when he became my walking buddy, helped me learn to like salmon and spinach, or encouraged me with his handmade cards. During a heat wave this summer I believe God enlisted Ron’s help when I needed a cool breeze. I had asked God first, then texted Ron and asked him to send a sea breeze up the coast. I stepped off the bus into a thick wall of air. Yet, a block later the most glorious breeze came rushing by. It was a wonderful reminder that “ask and ye shall receive” works on even simple things. I texted Ron a big thank you for being a miracle worker and assisting God with that answered prayer. S – SPIRIT As a person of Faith, I believe Ron’s spirit lives on. Whenever I see someone going above and beyond in helping others, I’ll see some of Ron. He was allergic to cats, yet when my cat was sick and I was travelling, Ron offered to take Kabuki to the vet for her treatments. Plus, in a way only Ron could, he helped me laugh in spite of my concern when he called to tell me everything went well and joked he took Kabuki to the pub next to the vet and they drank margaritas. When I got home from my trip there was a big “Welcome Home, Karla Babe”, a bottle of tequila and a note, “Kabuki is into shots now.” Thinking of that makes me smile through my tears. I’ve already felt Ron’s spirit whenever I’ve seen a can of Pringles – a required provision for any fishing trips with him. Plus, the last photo he sent me was of two cans of Pringles on his sailboat with the ocean beyond. We had been texting each other on July 26 and I was excited to let him know that on my way home from work I sat in Verdi Square and saw a firefly! I don’t remember ever seeing a firefly in Manhattan before. I texted, but he never saw it. When his sister Elaine called the next morning with the bad news, all of a sudden I had this feeling that maybe that firefly was a visit from Ron. And just recently I saw a dragonfly flying beside me as I took the escalator up from Penn Station. Maybe another visit? For years, early on Sunday mornings when I used to round the corner of 5th & 29th and see Ron’s truck parked in front of the church, I had a sense that “all was right with the world.” Well, perhaps fireflies, dragonflies, sea breezes, and even Pringles, are God and Ron letting me know they are both with me – and the fog will clear.

P.S. 30 TUTORIAL AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM TUTORS Volunteer as a tutor as we begin the third year of our P.S. 30 Tutorial and Enrichment program in Harlem. Tutors work one-on-one with 2nd - 5th grade students in need of academic support and also participate in cultural enrichment programs with the students and their families. Sunday, September 10 — Volunteers are needed to help with Ecclesia Ministry (worshipping congregation for the homeless in Madison Square Park). Prepare lunches, 10:00-10:30am; and/or transport lunches at 1:30pm and host the service which begins at 2:00pm. Marble Fights Hunger — Please support our continuous food drive by donating CANNED FOODS for Icahn House East (a temporary shelter for homeless mothers.) Leave food at the 29th Street Reception area, the Fifth Ave Narthex or the Marble Loft. Food Suggestions (nutritious, canned/bottled items only): Canned fruits & vegetables, pasta sauce, canned meats & fish, pasta, soups, peanut butter, jelly, juice, etc. Also, vacuum-packed cartons of milk/ juice and baby food in plastic/glass containers. We encourage everyone to bring something with them every time they come to Marble! Congregational Care Prayer Shawl Ministry — Knit or crochet prayer shawls for members who are ill or homebound.
