A VIEW FROM THE CHOIR LOFT TO APPLAUD OR NOT TO APPLAUD By Kenneth Dake It’s a slippery slope from a worship service with occasional applause to a performance with occasional worship. Very few parts of our service have remained immune to applause. I worry that we are unintentionally teaching our children to expect applause each time they sing in the Sanctuary. Applause is certainly no sin! When it becomes routine, however, we rob ourselves of experiencing the profound mystery and Divine Presence during this holy time of worship – this brief, sacred oasis in the midst of our busy lives. I am so grateful for all the loving affirmation I receive. But regular applause runs the risk of taking the spotlight off the message and putting it on the messenger. Plus, it unfairly rewards the most visible among us while neglecting the countless dedicated congregants and staff members who serve behind the scenes. In the Old English, Weorthscipe meant to acknowledge worth – Worth-Ship. To worship means to show reverence and adoration towards what we value most. What is the expression of that value? The world measures value by bestowing treasure, acclaim, applause. How do we?
Here are six ideas for actions I challenge you to take during worship in lieu of applause: 1. Keep silence. Sit quietly with the moment, remaining fully open to whatever word God is speaking to you. 2. Voice an acclamation. Say “Amen, Hallelujah, Thank you, Lord!” A spoken acclamation separates the church from any ordinary theater and redirects praise to God. 3. Say a prayer. By praying for the ministers and musicians you are giving a far more valuable gift of love and support. 4. Send an email. I feel honored and humbled when people take the time to write and express how the music touched them. 5. Make a donation. “Applaud” a ministry which has made a difference in your life by making a financial gift. 6. Invite someone to Marble. Invite someone to share that which has touched you deeply, inspired you to become more of the person God intends for you to be, and helped you forge deep bonds with others on the faith journey.

Reflections from the Editor
By Karla Fritsch God deals out joy in the present, the now. — Ecclesiastes 5:20, The Message Waiting. How do you feel when you see that spinning circle on your computer screen? What do you do when you look down that subway tunnel and there isn’t a light in sight? Recently, I was waiting for the bus and I couldn’t take my eyes off the corner where the bus would turn to make its way to the bus stop. I was a bit anxious and even though I kept coaching myself to stop – “a watched pot never boils” – my eyes and attention wouldn’t budge. Then a man standing next to me said, “It says it’s approaching,” and pointed to his phone. That snapped me back to the moment. I relaxed and stopped watching the corner. It still took a while for the bus to come, yet time seemed to disappear because I had returned to “now”. Yes, the positive shift was partly due to knowing the bus was coming. It has helped a lot to have the countdown clocks at subway stations – if it says 5 minutes until the next train, I release time. However, when it’s not working, it may be the same 5 minute wait, but it feels longer because I tend to think, “when is the train going to arrive?”, “am I going to be late?” – thoughts that pull me into the future. Or, “why didn’t I leave sooner” and other thoughts that pull me back to the past – rather than simply being present. Why can the present be such a challenging gift to unwrap? I often refer to a lesson I learned during Drivers’ Ed in High School: “Don’t drive ahead of your headlights.” You want to look further ahead from time to time, just like you check your rearview and side mirrors, however, in the dark your eyes can start playing tricks on you if you spend too much time focused beyond the reach of your headlights. I’m grateful to be reminded
THE MARBLE WELCOME THE BEST DECISION In 1990 I moved to Manhattan from upstate New York. I barely knew a soul and was looking for a church home but could not find one that enriched my spirit and my soul. After telling my mother about my issue, she told me to try Marble. I went and became hooked instantly and joined three months later! Years later, in search for a fulfilling volunteer opportunity, I decided to join the church’s Welcome Team. It was the best decision that I had ever made. I love welcoming visitors into my spiritual home every Sunday. I am so proud of my church and want guests
of that when I get a chance to drive, because I forget to apply it to my day-to-day life more than I’d like to admit. We’re approaching Lent and part of the season is waiting – yet, ideally we have spiritual practices we use to help us stay present during the journey rather than tapping our foot with impatience until Easter Sunday dawns. Moments like waiting for something to download, waiting for a bus, or any time we catch our thoughts pulling us too far forward or backward, are also opportunities to stretch our Be Present muscle. These are four exercises that have helped me; maybe they could help you, too: • Breathe. Even a couple deep breaths can bring me more fully into now. • Pray. Sometimes when I’m riding the bus I can get a bit worried about how packed it’s going to get and I miss the scenery as we go by, which is one reason I like to take the bus. When I catch my thoughts headed that way, I now sing a silent prayer for new passengers as they get on. • Ground Yourself. I learned this when I performed my cabaret years ago. Taking a moment to focus on the feeling of the stage beneath my feet helped me release some nerves and get fully present so I could enjoy each song. • Connect to a Passion. For me that includes being in nature, even focusing on one squirrel; creating, whether it’s taking photos or gluing those photos on notecards; and even proofing Touchpoint brings me to the present by focusing on what’s right in front of me — I get a burst of energy and time evaporates. Here’s to doing our best at unwrapping God’s gift of the present.

If you don’t see what’s right for you listed here, stop at the Action Volunteer Table on Sundays during Coffee Hour to talk with a committee member or contact Tom Schneider (TSchneider@MarbleChurch. org), for more ideas and referrals to organizations that are in need of volunteers. To receive notice of serving opportunities by email, “Action Alerts,” contact Tom. Sundays, February 11 & March 11 — Volunteers are needed to help with Ecclesia Ministry (worshipping congregation for the homeless in Madison Square Park). Prepare lunches, 10:00-10:30am; and/ or transport lunches at 1:30pm and host the service which begins at 2:00pm. Marble Fights Hunger — Please support our continuous food drive by donating CANNED FOODS for Icahn House East (a temporary shelter for homeless mothers.) Leave food at the 29th Street Reception area, the Fifth Ave Narthex or the Marble Loft. Nutritious, canned/bottled items only. Suggestions: fruits, vegetables, pasta sauce, meats, fish, pasta, soups, peanut butter, jelly, juice, etc. Also, vacuum-packed cartons of milk/juice and baby food in plastic/glass containers. We encourage everyone to bring something with them every time they come to Marble!
Congregational Care Prayer Shawl Ministry — Knit or crochet prayer shawls for members who are ill or homebound. Gather in Peale Parlor for prayer and creating together. All levels welcome. Materials provided. Generally 1st and 3rd Mondays, 4:00-5:00pm. Contact Judy Tulin (JTulin@MarbleChurch.org). Due to the Presidents’ Day Holiday we will meet on February 26 instead of February 19. Used Eyeglasses — Donate used glasses and sunglasses which are given to The Lion’s Club who recycles the glasses and distributes them in developing countries. PRAYERS FOR PEACE RIBBONS All the ribbons on our church fence are now orange. Ordinarily there are several colors, each representing different prayer requests for peace. In light of the growing number of mass shootings, we have refocused our Prayers for Peace ribbon vigil. We have dressed the fence in orange ribbons (the color selected for gun violence awareness in Chicago, 2015, and picked up by national activists), underscoring our prayer and passion that this madness may end.

Our ministers offer thoughtful and inspired preaching, combined with joyous music by the WeWo Praise Team and band, to create a mixture that is informal and reverent, often humorous and always Spirit-filled.
