Kirsty DePree Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives. — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Beloved Community at its best is when heart and character inform action, from the inside to the outside. One way we at Marble are seeking to do this is through our new initiative called Care Groups. In November, we mailed out a letter inviting you to be part of, or lead, a Care Group. We have had a good response, but I believe it could even be better. In my dreams and hopes, every member would be part of a Care Group. A Care Group is 6-8 people who are taken care of by a caregiver. The caregiver will call occasionally, make sure you are feeling connected, keep a look out to make sure you are doing well, and will be there for you, by praying and letting the church know when we need to pray for something specific. This initiative will truly help us to be a Beloved Community – a community that knows one another, cares for one another, prays for one another and believes in one another. Paul in his letter to the Colossians describes what a Beloved Community is like; it is a community who knows Christ and is ready to live like Christ. Paul suggests that God has chosen each of us, and we are holy and beloved, so we are to put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving each other as Jesus has forgiven us.

The wisdom of the desert fathers includes the wisdom that the hardest spiritual work in the world is to love neighbor as the self, to encounter another human being not as someone you can use, change, fix, help, save, convince or control, but simply as someone who can walk with you and love you and you will allow it. All our lives we are in need, and others are in need of us. George Odell has this hymn, “When We Need Each Other”: When we mourn and need to be comforted, when we are in trouble and afraid when we are in despair, in temptation and need to be recalled to our best selves again, when we would accomplish some great purpose and cannot do it alone, in the hour of success and defeat, and when we come to die and would have gentle hands prepare us for our journey. I went to a conference two years back and I bought this welcome sign: W – we are all related; E – everyone makes a difference; L – live simply; C – celebrate community and honor diversity; O – only love makes a family; M – make peace; E – everything is connected.
My hope, prayer and dream is that the Care Groups can help you know the welcome, the love and the care of being part of a Beloved Community. Love, Kirsty

A VIEW FROM THE CHOIR LOFT MARBLE’S ANNUAL ADVENT CONCERT
GRACE NOTES — INSIDE THE MUSIC WITH KENNETH DAKE Some of you have noticed me standing in the Choir Loft each Sunday morning at 10:50am talking to myself! Actually, I’m telling our online worshippers a bit about the music – and why I selected it – in a segment called Grace Notes. Much thought and prayer goes into planning each service, beginning with Dr. Brown’s chosen theme and scripture for the morning. My goal is to then weave together a tapestry of meaningful worship around the Word, using music of different eras and varied styles that will speak to the broadest possible range of worshippers. In Grace Notes I give historic and theological background on the day’s choral selections, hymns, preludes and postludes. There are layers of spiritual meaning in
everything we sing, and Grace Notes seeks to deepen the experience of this sacred appointment with the Divine that we call worship. On Sundays in December I’ll be giving Grace Notes at 10:40am from the Chancel, just preceding our special Advent Instrumental preludes. I hope you’ll join me early for this special treat. Always remember the words of Charles Wesley, “Lift up you heart, lift up your voice, again I say, rejoice.” Singing and rejoicing always begin in the heart. Kenneth Dake Director of Music

God’s Love in Action

By Nick Gilman It was the summer of 2015 and I was at my first Mable sponsored volunteer event, that happened to be a Habitat for Humanity build. I had recently become a member of Marble, in fact it was the first time being a member of any church, period. As a “new” Christian I didn’t know what God called me to do. But, I did know that God knocked and I opened the door. Throughout last year I listened to sermons preached, prayers prayed, bibles studied, with the theme: “Love is…”. For me that meant love in action. Not merely lip service or some repetitive ritual. It meant being the hands and feet of Christ. I was called to make a positive difference in the world.To show God’s love, by being His instrument of love. At Marble there are many opportunities to put God’s love in action. One of those opportunities to serve is with Habitat for Humanity, which Marble has partnered with to help build four homes, over the next four years, for families that otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford home ownership. Habitat’s ministry,
as they describe it, “is based on the conviction that to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, we must love and care for one another. Our love must not be words only – it must be true love, which shows itself in action.” God has endowed each of us with certain talents, skill, and abilities to be used for good, so that His will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. For me personally, the opportunity to work with Habitat to bless others, has been a blessing to me, which has created a greater sense of meaning and purpose in my life. A calling that Paul spoke about when he wrote, “But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14). Regardless of your home building skills or lackthere-of, there’s a need for you. As we explore this year’s church theme, “Positive Faith, Practical Living”, I hope that you will join us in using our positive faith, to put a positive dent in the world. We can and will make a difference!

Action Volunteers – Ways You Can Serve

Sundays, December 11 & January 8 – Volunteers are needed to help prepare 50 lunches, 10:00-10:30am, for Ecclesia Ministry (an openair worshipping congregation for the homeless in Madison Square Park). We also need others to transport the lunches and host the service which begins at 2:00pm; meet in front of 276 Fifth Ave at 1:30pm. iMentor – Get involved with this organization that matches high school students with a collegeeducated mentor, equipped to guide that young person on their journey to college graduation.
Marble Fights Hunger – Please support our continuous food drive by donating non-perishables. Food is given to Icahn House shelter program. Leave donations at the 29th Street Reception area, the Fifth Ave Narthex or the Marble Loft. Congregational Care Prayer Shawl Ministry – Knit or crochet prayer shawls as gifts to members who are ill or homebound. Gather in Peale Parlor on 1st and 3rd Mondays, 4:00-5:00pm, for prayer and creating together. All levels welcome. Materials provided.
