ever leave Christ out of Christmas and that being in our beautiful Marble Sanctuary only makes Christmas all the more special. It does for me. May I suggest another tangible way we can be faithful and honor Christ this Christmas? Last year, for our Advent/Christmas/End-of-the-Year offering, we received some $34,000. That made a huge difference in our stewardship for the year. I want to challenge the church to give $40,000 this year. Our theme will be “Love Is... A Birthday Gift for Christ”. The funds are used to supplement ministry and missions in our regular General Fund so that in essence, we are able to share Marble’s love during this special time of year. We will honor one of our important values: Giving Back. You will be receiving a special appeal letter from Dr. Brown with an envelope for giving back at Christmas. Our deadline will be December 31, which is the final day we can receive contributions for tax credit for 2015. We will have a special Christmas Offering Tree that for each $1,000 we raise, an ornament will be placed so we can see how we are doing. Let this be over and above your pledge or regular giving back as it is your birthday gift to the Lord Jesus. I believe you can do it. I know you will try. Join with me in saying and giving “Happy Birthday!!” May the peace, love and grace of Christ surround you and yours this most blessed holiday time.

Mark King Do you recall the old Rankin and Bass animated “Frosty the Snowman?” Whenever that crazy magician’s hat was placed on Frosty, he would come alive and say “Happy Birthday” as it was his equivalent of a first day of birth. We enter a season now whereby we remember and celebrate the day of birth of our Lord. Advent and Christmas mean many things for many people. For some, it is full of nostalgia and fond recollections. For some, it is getting together with family, perhaps the only time of the year you see some cousins and distant relatives. For some, it is ambivalent as the want to celebrate and feel the joy is conflicted with that empty chair or lonely room of a dear one now departed. My mother’s mother died on December 20 so Christmas has a touch of being “blue” for her even after these many years. Still for others, the holidays are times for reveling, singing favorite carols, adorning the home with lights and trees and anticipating what we will get and more so for mature adults, what we will give to our loved ones. In the midst of all the holidays of course is Christ. We all know the tired clichés of “Jesus is the reason for the season” and “Put Christ back into Christmas,” so I won’t need to go down that path. I do believe that for so many of God’s people, there is not an intention to

The Spirit of Christmas
By Rev. Kirsty DePree Matthew tells us that the birth of Jesus fulfilled a prophecy given about seven centuries earlier by the prophet Isaiah: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” God is with us. I must admit that I am a Dr. Seuss lover and during the holiday season I look forward to watching “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. This well-known tale embodies much of what Christmas is about for some people. We see both joy and sadness side by side. I have always had a soft side for the Grinch. Because of his previous Christmas experiences, he has withdrawn from the festivities and finds himself resenting others who are having fun. The reality is, the Grinch is lonely, and when I watch it I am reminded of the many people who at times find Christmas to be a difficult lonely time. At the beginning of the tale we are told that the Grinch’s heart was two times too small, and he didn’t want Christmas to happen at all. Everything he could think of, he did, to ruin that day. But what the Grinch soon came to realize is that

it’s not the glitter and presents and food that makes Christmas what it is — it is simply the spirit of the people; a people who know and embrace the good news that Emmanuel is with us. My prayer is that the spirit of the people at Marble will remember the shut-ins, or the ones who feel saddened because their loved ones are gone, or the people who do not have family to celebrate with, or the person who is hungry and cold on the streets, or the child who may be wondering if Santa will really come. At Marble the spirit of the people is seen in the Advent Small Groups, in the gift exchanges, in the Christmas party for the children of Icahn House, in the numerous volunteers who call upon the shut-ins, in the cards and gifts that are sent, in the worship services, and in the many random acts of kindness. The spirit of the people at Christmas time is what allowed the Grinch’s heart to change and grow, in other words to feel loved and be able to show love. The beauty of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is that it ends with a message of hope and new life. I have to believe that when we reach out to a brother or sister in need, our hearts change and the one we have come to know as our Emmanuel is with us, around us, and among us.

The Gift of Finding Hope in Each Other

By Susanah Wade The God I worship and love created this world community — a community in which we are different in multiple ways — a kaleidoscope of colors. Based on the ongoing chaos we see in our world, it seems clear that our differences can sometimes make us question whether or not we are supposed to love each other, to work together, to care for each other, or to have a responsibility to try to understand each other. Whatever God’s intent was in creating us in this kaleidoscope of colors, it is clear to me that one of God’s primary intents was for us to embrace both our similarities and differences. And I think another intent was for us to be able to find hope in him through our relationships with each other as we navigate the path of life. Recently, I was privileged and honored to travel to South Africa with a group of fifteen people. Our goal was to start building relationships with different populations in that country and hopefully find ways in which we could walk a path of healing with them, as well as find ways to ease their burdens even in some small way. What we found was a community of people, both alike and different from us in various ways but a community of people who were an example to us of what it meant to express a generosity in spirit and love even with few resources. Our trip to South Africa was rich in many ways as is evident from reflections shared below by participants. During the trip, Dr. Brown preached and shared his story. Others of us likewise shared our stories. And our new friends in South Africa also shared their stories, in particular their struggles. Now I would in no way presume to think that any of us visiting could say that we fully understand their daily struggles, but I know that during our time together, we were able to build a connection through being in communication and relationship with each other. South Africa has its challenges like other places around the world — but despite those challenges, I saw a country that was geographically beautiful and a country that in terms of the human spirit and the human heart was beautiful despite the lingering
effects of apartheid. Of particular note for me was the looming presence wherever we travelled, and even in the midst of galvanized shack settlements of these breathtakingly beautiful flowering trees called the jacaranda trees. Each time I saw one of these beautiful clusters of purple hues looming tall and majestic, I felt a sense of hope in the beauty of these God created trees. And I also felt a reminder of God’s desire for us to find beauty in everyone. Through this type of lens, each one of us can be an inspiration and source of hope for others if we take time to be in relationship with each other. Below are some reflections of those with whom I felt blessed to have shared a mission journey, walking alongside communities of God’s people in South Africa in love.
Though everything we did was important, to me the heart of the entire trip was our time in Botshabelo. I want to go back there! I think of the women who run the program for children and adoptive families, the families who welcomed us into their homes, and especially the children themselves who were sources of so much love and joy. I keep looking at the pictures and wishing there had been even more time to be with them and love them. Also, that Sunday morning in the little church in Botshabelo is a memory that will live with me always. Such faith. Such joy. And, it was even better getting to experience all that with people from Marble. Michael and I are so thankful we got to go. — Page Brown I’m not the same person I was when I left. And I will be processing my experience for a long time. It was more than powerful. — Chris Danuser Mashapela is perhaps 8 years old. The staff at the children and youth center didn’t know much about her since she was rescued only the week before. Given that she left the other children playing in the other room to help with chores, I imagine that she may have been her dying mother’s caretaker. When we finished our chores, we joined the others and played with the toys. — Stephanie Bailey

To be in the presence of children who have experienced loss of family, home, innocence, and security and realize that these children, who would seemingly have no reason to hope, still have the capacity to smile, sing, and dream is to know God provides love and strength to each and every one of us no matter where we are or what we are experiencing, if we just hold on. — Tusi Elvi South Africa was a life-changing experience. As much as I have seen and done as a journalist throughout my life, there is nothing like our witnessing first-hand a people who have faced so many life challenges over so many decades. And yet, in the face of the dire poverty and neglect that we saw, there is a huge element of HOPE in the eyes of even the poorest of South Africans. It made an indelible etching on my memory. We can, as a congregation at Marble, really make a difference in their lives. We witnessed that potential in the faces of the children who need our help and support. — Scott Luxor
Reflections from the Editor
By Karla Fritsch As 2015 draws to a close, I’ve been thinking a lot about MY TREE. In grade school I was given a silver maple seedling for Arbor Day and my dad helped me plant it in our front yard. For decades I’ve told the story about the life lessons that tree planted in my soul. The memories are strong, yet I still struggle to apply the lessons to my own life. Bringing that little tree home made me so happy. Then within days of planting it someone had broken off the branches and left just a few inches of trunk peeking up above the soil. I was heartbroken. I thought it was over. But Daddy said no, let’s not give up on it. He encouraged me to keep watering and watching. I had trouble believing it would grow. Yet, little by little, that stick got taller. Daddy knew that the unseen roots had been reaching into the soil making the tree hardy. Even when it looked like nothing was happening above the surface, growth – progress – was happening. Then branches appeared. I was thrilled. The lessons continued. One day my dad said it was time to prune the lower branches. No! Don’t cut my tree. Daddy explained that by pruning those branches it would help my tree grow taller and stronger. He was right. I’ve included a photo I took last spring of my tall, strong, gorgeous tree.

My journey in South Africa was a multifaceted, often conflicting, confounding, affirming and exhilarating experience. I learned more about my black heritage bringing the African in African-American into keen perspective. The trip allowed me to delve into where I come from attributing to the texture of my hair, round of my hips, the resonance of family and so much of what it means to be me. I was also blessed to witness and be the recipient of “in spite of” spirit. In spite of staggering poverty, deep-set emotional pain and sickness, overbearing injustice and daily struggle I was honored to meet beautiful and kind South African adults and children who have somehow mastered generating joy, harboring hope and sharing love...in spite of. Dear God, please help me to always remember when I mumble in the presence of so much favor and blessings the profound lessons I’ve learned in South Africa. — Trenesa Danuser
This has been on my mind because as one year ends and another begins, I’m considering what in my life I am ready to prune. I’m reflecting on those days when I feel like I’m that broken tree. I’m asking myself, am I feeding my roots in the best ways possible? Are there parts of my life where it seems like nothing is growing taller and stronger, where my faith is wavering because I can’t see any progress? I was blessed back then that my dad believed. Yes, he had knowledge, yet he also had patience and faith. I am blessed now because even though there are so many times I forget the lessons of My Tree, I have people in my life who remind me and encourage me. They offer gifts, like my friend Rochelle when she tells me, “Borrow my faith.” I hope My Tree can be an encouraging reminder for you as you head into 2016 – to plant… tend… prune… wait… believe…

BISHOP WILL WILLIMON Sunday, January 31 | 10:00am We continue our special series of welcoming outstanding scholars from the spectrum of theological and ecclesiastical academia to offer presentations on current and yet provocative topics of relevance to the modern church in Marble’s unique urban setting. Bishop Will Willimon of The United Methodist Church and Bishop-in-Residence, Duke Divinity School, served as the dean of Duke Chapel and Professor of Christian Ministry at Duke University for 20 years. He returned to Duke after serving as
the UMC Bishop of the North Alabama Conference, 2004-2012. He is the author of 60 books. His Worship as Pastoral Care was selected as one of the 10 most useful books for pastors in 1979 by the Academy of Parish Clergy.

Christmas or Confusion, Bethlehem or Bedlam... which will you choose this year? The truth is, we don’t have to choose, because Christmas always happens right in the midst of confusion. You are invited to explore this through reflection and discussion in a Small Group for Advent. We will find that Christ breaks into our confusion and brings Christmas; this study will help us to be ready to embrace our Emmanuel. We hope to have 6-8 groups that meet at different times. SANTA LETTERS through December 6! – Pick up your letter after Worship during Coffee Hour at the Action Volunteer Table and buy a gift for children from SCAN (Supportive Children’s Advocacy Network) and Icahn House (single homeless mothers with children under 12 years of age). Please return gifts by December 13. Saturday, December 12 – Help host our annual Christmas Party in the Marble Loft for single mothers and their children residing in Icahn House East, a transitional family shelter on East 28th Street. Volunteers needed 10:00am-3:00pm.
Christmas Day Breakfast – Join in the holiday spirit and volunteer to serve to the homeless at Mainchance on 32nd Street in Manhattan. Cooks are needed 7:00-11:30am, and servers 9:0011:30am. Space is limited so sign up early at the Action Table. Holiday Hospitality – Offer a gift of service this year! We need ushers for our services and hosts for our festive receptions on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24 and New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31. If you don’t see what’s right for you listed here, stop at the Action Volunteer Table on Sundays during Coffee Hour to talk with a committee member or contact Tom Schneider (TSchneider@MarbleChurch. org), for more ideas and referrals to organizations that are in need of volunteers. To receive notice of serving opportunities by email, “Action Alerts,” contact Tom. Sundays, December 13 & January 10 – Volunteers are needed to help prepare 50 lunches, 9:30-10:30am, for Ecclesia Ministry (an open-air worshipping congregation for the homeless in Madison Square Park). We also need others to transport the lunches and host the service which begins at 2:00pm; meet in front of 276 Fifth Ave at 1:30pm. Marble Fights Hunger – Please support our continuous food drive by donating non-perishables. Food is given to Icahn House shelter program. Leave donations at the 29th Street Reception area, the Fifth Ave Narthex or the Marble Loft. Congregational Care Prayer Shawl Ministry – Knit or crochet prayer shawls as gifts to members who are ill or homebound. Gather on 1st and 3rd Mondays, 4:00-5:00pm, for prayer and creating together. LOVE IS… MARBLE PRAYER SHAWLS We now have over ten people participating in the Knitting/Crocheting Ministry. Here are reflections from two of them: As a crocheter, there is a soothing effect of prayer for healing and comfort and warmth that goes beyond spoken words for both the receiver and the one who is creating the prayer shawl. – Jennifer Hylton It is a joy to combine my passion for knitting with the chance to convey love and prayers through the gift of a shawl to someone in the Marble family. – Betty Costa Rev. DePree blesses the completed prayer shawls which are given to people in a time of need so they can experience the warmth and love of god covering them. A member in a nursing home was touched to receive a lavender shawl from Rev. DePree and Marble’s Knitting/Crocheting Ministry. With tears in her eyes, she expressed appreciation for the visit, the prayers and the shawl – that happened to match her outfit.
