Dr. Brown has been a great friend and colleague. He has buoyed my spirits and provided support when I needed it the most. I will miss his wisdom and encouragement — and his humor!

I have also been able to work with Marble’s Board.

It doesn’t take long to discover how much Marble means to them. Because of this, they have made sacrifices of their time, talents and treasure so this special community continues to be a blessing for all who seek healing and hope.

By Daryl Paul Lobban If you are a young adult (however you define it) we want to connect with you and do life together! 2018 is an exciting year for Connection: Young Adult Ministry at Marble!

We will be hosting a number of social and service events to help you connect with God and with other young adults in the NYC area.

• Every First Sunday we are hosting our monthly “Kickback” social hour right after 11:00am Worship. On Easter, April 1, we will be hosting this monthly event at O’Reilly’s Restaurant (54 W. 31st St) only a couple blocks away. Join us for good food, company, drink and conversation.

• Starting in May we will be having an in-person book study every Sunday after Worship.

• June 2-8, we will be heading to St. Thomas for a mission trip to help with hurricane relief!

• October 4-15, we will be traveling to South Africa as a group for another exciting mission and cultural trip!

• We also have other service opportunities with P.S.30 and Habitat with Humanity with many young adults involved.

Lastly, just about every Tuesday I travel four hours each way to NYC from Washington D.C. and I have a lot of thoughts with all that time on my hand, some are more spiritual and some are me complaining about my train/plane delays. By Rev. Chad Tanaka Pack In my office at Marble, I often meet one-on-one with people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning. Some are looking for a church home. Some want to speak with a gay pastor.

Some want to connect with other LGBTQ Christians. These seekers find me at Marble through GIFTS (GLBTQ in Fellowship, Tradition and Service), where I serve as pastoral adviser. They read about us on our website and have questions.

A church that welcomes LGBTQ people? A church that has a special group for LGBTQ people?

A church that hires LGBTQ staff?

They want to know more. I understand firsthand the challenges of living in New York City as an LGBTQ Christian. Although we all — regardless of our sexual orientation or gender identity — ask similar spiritual questions, LGBTQ Christians struggle with unique issues.

THE MARBLE WELCOME DECADES OF BLESSED INTERACTIONS For over 30 years it has been my delight and pleasure to greet and welcome members and visitors at the front door of our beloved Marble Church as they enter through the Narthex to attend Worship. Over these many years I have heard and learned the many reasons they have come and continue to do so: “The ushers are very friendly here and say they are happy to see me.” “I come expecting to be uplifted by the message and find the welcome helps to do that as I come in.”

LGBTQ Christians have been repeatedly hurt by churches. I therefore believe that churches everywhere have a special calling to reach out to LGBTQ people.

Marble has answered that call with a resounding, “You are welcome!”

Through GIFTS, Marble transforms the lives of LGBTQ Christians who have never experienced a church as welcoming as ours.

This June, GIFTS needs your support. On Sunday, June 24, join us as we celebrate the New York Heritage of Pride March. Because the march route has changed, we’ll be celebrating a little differently this year. Stay tuned for details!

Reflections from the Editor

By Karla Fritsch I like flowers. I enjoy walking through peaceful gardens, viewing the array of colors and inhaling the exhilarating fragrances. As I walk along the streets of NYC, the flowers planted under trees make me smile.

I’ve created a book of my photos entitled “Bloom”, and it’s a treat to have a vase of fresh flowers around.

I get a kick out of packets of seeds and like the idea of planting them – however, I don’t like gardening.

Actually, it’s the weeding I don’t like. It stems from childhood when we rented our basement room to a college student who introduced our yard to the weed “Creeping Charlie”. Charlie took over. One of our family chores was to pull it up to give the grass a fighting chance. I hated almost every moment of it.

Recently, weeds went up a notch in my book. I was beating myself up for some of my bad habits and yelling, “What in the world is wrong with me?” Speaking in that manner doesn’t help, it drains energy and usually keeps you stuck. Then I felt a Divine Nudge direct me to a new question – how can I look at this differently? How can I look at these habits as something outside myself so I don’t feel defeated and flawed beyond hope. Weeds came to mind.

If God created me to be a unique flower and wants me to bloom fully, weeds can choke off the nourishment I need to grow into the best me I can be. If they get really bad, they can be a barrier that keeps others from seeing the true me. Weeds can keep me from seeing the person God created me to be.

Years ago I was aware that I’d planted some Creeping Charlie around myself, creating a protective wall. It seemed necessary at the time and did allow me to do some important inner work, yet it took over in some areas and made me forget who I really am and who I could become.

Looking at my issues as weeds doesn’t let me off the hook about working through them. I’m the one that still needs to be committed to pulling them. Yet, seeing them as something outside myself – as challenges instead of weaknesses – helps me tap into my deep roots, to believe in my possibilities, which can give me the fuel I need to make positive changes.

Spring is here, a wonderful time for watching flowers pop up. I hope with every crocus, hyacinth, tulip and violet viewed, we all can be reminded of the amazing flower God created each of us to be. We do not have to be defined by the weeds, the bad habits, the issues that hold us back. We only need to roll up our sleeves and bit by bit work on pulling those weeds out of the way so that God’s Sunshine can reach us and we can grow and bloom fully.

Bowery Mission Saturday, June 16 | 5:30-7:30pm Join other Marble members as we serve dinner to the homeless. The Bowery Mission provides more than 1,000 meals per day to poor and homeless men, women, and children.

Marble Fights Hunger — Please support our continuous food drive by donating CANNED FOODS for Icahn House East (a temporary shelter for homeless mothers.)

Leave food at the 29th Street Reception area, the Fifth Ave Narthex or the Marble Loft. Nutritious, canned/bottled items only. Suggestions: fruits, vegetables, pasta sauce, meats, fish, pasta, soups, peanut butter, jelly, juice, etc. Also, vacuum-packed cartons of milk/juice and baby food in plastic/glass containers. We encourage everyone to bring something with them every time they come to Marble!

Used Eyeglasses — Donate used glasses and sunglasses which are given to The Lion’s Club who recycles the glasses and distributes them in developing countries.
