“Go ye into all the world ….”

I usually write in Touchpoint about things upcoming in the building. And, to be sure, there are lots of significant events on the calendar (including, but not limited to, moments like Confirmation Sunday on May 1 and Pentecost Weekend with Becca Stevens on May 14-15).

But for a moment, I want to share with you a few brief thoughts about some additional forms of ministry at Marble that are both/and in nature. They are designed both for the cherished people who regularly come to the corner of 29th and 5th and for those others, also cherished, who seek us from across the nation and around the world.

Our live-streaming numbers are growing and impressive. You hear us refer every Sunday morning to the fact that people worshiped with us the preceding week from numerous states and countries. Ordinarily those numbers include viewers from well over forty states and twenty-five to thirty countries. What you do not hear us say is that now, in addition to the still impressive attendance Marble enjoys in-house, we have more people worshiping with us online than we do in the building.

When I was in seminary, we used to study The Great Commission. That is the statement of Jesus, issued as command: “Go ye into all the world, making disciples ….” (Matthew 28:18) In my seminary days, that text was primarily considered vis-à-vis the work of global missions. It never occurred to me that in time I would serve a church like this one where we literally respond to that divine command every single day. In addition to live-streaming (not only on Sunday mornings, but also on Wednesday evenings and with all of it archived for your convenience), we provide weekly worship/study opportunities specifically for a virtual

audience. Both Soul Purpose and The Bible for Today are posted every week on our website and on YouTube. Additionally, Dr. King, Rev. DePree, and I have taught online Bible and Theology classes (with more to come). In one I led recently we had Dr. Michael Brown participants from New York to Connecticut to New Jersey to Virginia to Missouri to Croatia. Uh huh – Croatia! “Go ye into all the world ….”

And, it doesn’t end there. We are also active in a wide variety of social media outlets. Let me mention just two (there are others). Our church posts events and articles on Facebook and Twitter. We now have thousands of people accessing information about Marble via those two sites alone, and those people are from as nearby as Manhattan and as far away as Australia and South Korea. “Go ye into all the world ….”

Some of us write blogs every week, available on our website. I often tell people that if they are actually interested in getting to know me and my personal opinions about things, they need to read my blogs. Sermons are not designed to communicate the thoughts of any individual preacher, but instead are designed for a far loftier purpose: to communicate God’s thoughts as revealed through scripture and through the life and teachings of Jesus. However, for those who want to see a bit into the heart and mind of the one who preaches, reading blogs is the best way to do so. By Dr. R. Mark King I just finished a biography of sorts on Leonard Nimoy, the now deceased actor who played, among many roles, Mr. Spock on Star Trek. It was written by his colleague and friend, William Shatner. In it, Shatner relays how an ancient Greek mythological tale captivated Nimoy and had a tremendous impact on his acting of Spock as well as other artistic expressions.

Plato, in his work, The Symposium, has another Greek philosopher, Aristophanes, relay the story of human origins. Aristophanes conjured that humans originally had four arms, four legs and a single head of two faces. The gods were becoming anxious about the humans as they were achieving great power and strength. But yet, the gods enjoyed the tributes the humans afforded to them. Zeus therefore developed a plan that would split the humans in half, therefore nullifying their prowess but also doubling the number who would pay tribute. This forced the humans to be in dire misery as they were missing half of themselves and searching diligently for that other half.

Hence, the concept of “soulmate” was developed as two individuals would discover their other half and thus be reunited (and opposite sex was irrelevant as Aristophanes hypothesized there were actually three genders – if you want more on that – just ask me!).

The truth, though, is that humans need relationships in this life and with rare exception, few human beings find joy in absolute isolation or being hermits.

The other interesting facet of this myth is that since ancient times, humans have felt a somewhat incompleteness in and of ourselves. Ancient and modern art use masks to “bridge” in portraying various aspects of the human being that seem “missing” from the bearer. We project “masks” ourselves in either hiding what we perceive to be our own inadequacies OR to protect our deepest core from being revealed – both of which “hide” that which we feel is not right in our souls. I am not a psychologist so let me quit playing that now. However, let me say this: what do you feel is “missing” or “hiding” in being your complete self? It is a question worth pondering deeply and thoroughly.

I believe we were created by God (as opposed to the Greek gods) with an innate drive or search for that which is greater than ourselves. It is the homing device within our souls to seek out and discover/find God. I am not that versed in the psychological arts but I am in the theological arts. I believe that what may be missing in so many hearts, so many souls, so many lives, is that keen relationship with God through Christ. And guess what, God is waiting fervently for you to find what you are seeking – which is God. From there awaits a whole new world of self-discovery!

The point is that we have so much available now beyond the sacred corner where our church resides.

In a world of laptops and cell phones, Marble is there.

We are trying to take the Good News to people where they are. We’re available as they ride the commuter trains or buses or subways. We’re available as they sit before their computers at home or far away (via website, social media, and e-blasts). We’re available to people who once were actively involved in this (or

some other) house of worship but now are no longer physically able to do so. We’re available at whatever hours best suit the needs of the persons who seek us. Personally, I do not think screens will ever replace the essential quality of walking through the doors of a church, experiencing the smiles, handshakes, and hugs, and feeling connected in a physical way. But, for those who cannot come to us, I am excited that we are able and excited about going to them. What a wonderful new age, when technology enables us to say “Yes” to Jesus when Jesus says to us, “Go ye into all the world ….”

big 50. I am thankful for the 50 years I have had, and I am ready to say alleluia and see what the next 50 years of new life bring.

Baptism, Easter and even birthdays give us the opportunity to reflect on the newness of life, the power of transformation and renewal. Paul in his second letter to the Corinthians shows the beauty of new life in Christ with these words. “So if anyone is in Christ, they are a new Creation, the old is gone, and the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) As I begin this next chapter in my life, I pray and hope that I will be saying alleluia often and in doing so praise God for life, breath and all of you who continue to remind me of God’s transformative power and renewal as together we discover the wings we have been given and soar to new heights.

Stacy Penson became the Director of the Marble Community Gospel Choir in February. Originally from Omaha, Stacy graduated from Oberlin Conservatory and trained at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. Stacy has worked as music director for five Broadway productions and with numerous musical artists such as Alicia Keys, Angie Stone, Patti LaBelle, Brian McKnight and Kathleen Battle. He has also worked on the music staff at University Of Michigan, Butler University, and Bowling Green State University as conductor, pianist, and instructor. By Rev. Kirsty DePree Alleluia, He has risen, He has risen indeed. If you walk into my office, on my wall, you will see a big sign that says Alleluia - Amen. I have often been called the Alleluia Lady. Almost, every service I preach, I use the word Alleluia in the benediction, reminding us that as we leave we are to look for all those moments that we can praise God. By the time you receive this, we will have had the Women’s Retreat, we will have celebrated Easter and hopefully spring has sprung and butterflies are flying around. For me, spring, butterflies and alleluias are signs of life. A butterfly metamorphoses from a caterpillar to a chrysalis and finally becomes a butterfly – it is a strong resurrection symbol, a reminder of new life.

Marble Collegiate Partners with Habitat for Humanity to Build Hope

By Susanah Wade Marble has had a long tradition of answering the call to help those in need. Through our yearly Easter Offering receipts, we currently support an average of 50 to 60 non-profit organizations that are committed to helping those in need in the US and a limited number of international organizations. This year, Marble will also partner with Habitat for Humanity to build a house in Queens NY that will help a family in need to find a place to call “home”.

1 John 3:18 says, “Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and

action.” In heeding God’s call, a portion of our Easter Offering proceeds will help to fund this initiative, but more importantly, congregants will work alongside the family and other Habitat volunteers to build the house.

Habitat transforms lives by building quality homes for families in need and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing. We are honored to be joining them in their efforts to build hope and build homes. For more information, please contact me (SWade@ MarbleChurch.org).

Know the Condition of Your Financial “Flocks”

By T.J. Houlihan Have you ever heard Handel’s Messiah? As a choral singer, it’s one of my favorites.

Many of us know it for the “Hallelujah Chorus” traditionally played around Christmastime. One movement from it that l absolutely love to sing is “All We Like Sheep”: All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned every one to his own way. And the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:6) The first sentence in particular never ceased to crack me up! Scripturally, what this is saying to us is that just like carefree sheep, we too, wander all over (and away from Jesus, the Great Shepherd.) A roaming flock of sheep can be a great metaphor for many things in life — things that can roam away from us when we’re not paying attention like personal, spiritual or financial matters. Just as Jesus is our shepherd, we too, must become the “shepherd” and pay attention to our own “flocks.” To “know the condition of your flocks, and give special attention to your herds” (Proverbs 27:23) take a look at the following reminders: AUTO-PAYMENTS Scrutinize any automated charges to your credit card and bank statements. Could the interest rates on your credit cards be reduced? Are the bank fees you’re paying still competitive? Can you save on phone, internet or cable charges? When are magazine, newspaper or other subscriptions due to renew or should you cancel any? Have you considered automating your pledge or regular charitable gifts?

INSURANCE Review your insurance policies. Are you still comfortable with the liability limits on your car? How about the deductible amounts? What does Uninsured Motorist cover? Have your medical insurance out-ofpocket expenses changed for 2016? Do you have life insurance? If so, is it still adequate for your family’s needs?

INVESTMENTS Evaluate your nest egg periodically. Are your retirement and investment accounts well diversified for risk? Are you maximizing your employer’s IRA matching program or leaving money on the table?

Have you named beneficiaries? Could its beneficiaries include your favorite ministry?

GIVING BACK You are blessed to be a blessing! Are you “openhanded” (Deut. 15:11)? Have you considered giving stock or appreciated assets? Are you leveraging Planned Giving strategies to direct less to taxes and more toward your loved ones and ministries as well as faithful giving causes?

ESTATE PLAN Ensure you at least have a Will! If so, have you updated it lately? Have you lost or gained family members? Sold a business or bought property?

Become more involved in a particular charity? Does your Estate Plan include named churches and charities like Marble?

Exploring these “flocks” on a regular basis strengthens your stewardship of the resources God has entrusted to you. In short, fellow shepherds, make sure you know the condition of your flocks so that they don’t roam off!

Reflections from the Editor

By Karla Fritsch I have a significant birthday coming up in May thanks to my lucky number 5 being doubled. Actually, all my birthdays are pretty special to me. I was blessed to have wonderful celebrations when I was a child so that contributed to my love of birthdays. In fact, for years I wanted to believe that the “Veishea Parade” on the Iowa State Campus was for me. It was held in early May and I usually had my friends over for a birthday party afterwards.

I often had themed parties… a fashion show, a hobo party, a pool party. One of my favorites was a backwards party – guests entered through the back door, we all wore our clothes backwards, we tried to sit at the table backwards and ate chocolate angel food cake before we ate our lunch.

Even now, although I don’t have themed parties, my birthday brings out the excitement of the child in me. I was a really happy “child” a few years ago when I experienced some magical birthday moments thanks to Catherine Ortiz and Marble’s Marketing & Communications Team. One birthday when I got to

up close and personal and exhibit pastoral glimpses of himself for questions that have no perfunctory answer. – Peter Barnett, New Jersey Talk Back is a wonderful addition to our Sunday morning worship experience. Being able to interact with one of the best preachers in the world is a real blessing. Of course, a big part of birthdays is making wishes and I’ve been pondering some of the wishes I have for the year ahead. Five of my wishes for 5/5: breathing space, more balance, remembering to be led by love toward myself and others rather than fear, using consistent small steps to take more leaps of faith forward, listening more to God and my Self.

Another part of birthdays is sharing. So, I wish these same things for you. I also wish you daily celebrations and magical moments, because isn’t each new day a type of birth? May you experience parts of life with the excited spirit of a child, join in some parades, and once in a while – eat dessert first.

The Colloquium

MATTHEW PHILLIPS Sunday, May 29 | 10:00am We conclude our special series with outstanding scholars from the spectrum of theological and ecclesiastical academia.

Matthew Phillips teaches business law and ethics at Matthew Phillips the Business School of Wake Forest University in North Carolina. He leverages a passion for innovative teaching and engages students with the practical intersections of law and business, while also emphasizing the underlying principles that shape interaction with law and ethical decision-making.

He received his Master of Divinity degree from Duke University, where he focused on the intersections of law and religion in American history and he has done additional academic work, concentrating on leadership and ethics, at the U.S. Air Force’s Air University.

He is also a pilot and legal officer in the Civil Air Patrol (the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary).

Sunday, April 10 & May 8 – Volunteers are needed to help prepare 50 lunches, 10:00-10:30am, for Ecclesia Ministry (an open-air worshipping congregation for the homeless in Madison Square Park).

We also need others to transport the lunches and host the service which begins at 2:00pm; meet in front of 276 Fifth Ave at 1:30pm.

Marble Fights Hunger – Please support our continuous food drive by donating non-perishables. Food is given to Icahn House shelter program. Leave donations at the 29th Street Reception area, the Fifth Ave Narthex or the Marble Loft.

Congregational Care Prayer Shawl Ministry – Knit or crochet prayer shawls as gifts to members who are ill or homebound. Gather on 1st and 3rd Mondays, 4:00-5:00pm, for prayer and creating together. All levels welcome. Materials provided.
