MINISTERIAL MUSINGS EXTRAORDINARY WORK IN ORDINARY TIMES By Rev. Brittany Juliette Hanlin “When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among the people, to make music in the heart.” – Howard Thurman The Christian liturgical calendar is framed around two of the holiest days of the year. We all know these days well: Christmas and Easter. As Christians, we spend a great deal of time preparing ourselves for such sacred days and, if we’re honest, the days between Christmas and Easter just feel… ordinary. In the Christian liturgical calendar, we consider “Ordinary Time” any time between Christmastide and Eastertide (not including Advent and Lent). It feels like there is nothing sacred and holy to celebrate, so many of us become stagnant in our spiritual practices. Our compassion for the stranger is limited and our capacity to hear the cries of injustice is minimal. The exuberant Christmas joy once exuding from our
hearts is now gone, and we long for the return of the next holy day. Over the past year, many of us feel like this time is anything but ORDINARY: as political divisions continue to separate us from one another, as a pandemic continues to take innocent lives, as racial injustice is glossed over and ignored, as people struggle to make ends meet. We long for peace, we long for calm, we long for…ordinary. But, Howard Thurman’s words remind us of the extraordinary work of ordinary times. Finding the lost is extraordinary work to do in these ordinary times. Healing the broken is extraordinary work to do in these ordinary times. Feeding the hungry is always extraordinary work in ordinary times. Releasing the prisoner with forgiveness is extraordinary work for ordinary times. Rebuilding our nation with love, truth and justice, that’s extraordinary work in these ordinary times. Bringing peace among people and to make music in the heart, Beloved children of God, that is extraordinary work for ordinary times. There is extraordinary work to do. There is love to give and receive. There is truth to be spoken. There is justice to seek. During these ordinary times, may we open our hearts to the Gospel’s extraordinary call to serve in love.
MARBLE’S EASTER OFFERING — ELEVATING LIVES By Rev. Susanah Wade Easter reminds me of movement in an upward up and gave $158,000 to the Easter Offering which direction. The monthly Staff Worship has certainly become Karla’s project. Through the years since its inception, it has called a tiny halt to life and lets us do what makes church work scale the heights of heaven. We stop and pray for each other and for the Church. Two thousand years later, it is another incarnation of Jesus’ promise “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” – Sr. Carol Perry Karla has always been an inspiration to me, an Iowa girl who came to the big city, and won her place in it. By Karla Fritsch I can easily forget how far I’ve come in my life when I’m distracted by challenges in front of me, especially those that are too familiar. So, my 30th anniversary at Marble has been an opportune time for reflecting on the gifts of growth working here has given me, or helped me open within myself. These are some of the gifts I’ve revisited during this milestone. Being part of the Marble Staff has given me… My NYC Family Of course, I have my big extended NYC family from being a congregant, yet my closest circle of friends who became family, I met on the job, especially “The Gang”(photo on pg 7), headed by beloved Marble elders Ed and Luella Mulder and Henry and Dorothy Marsh. Not only were these new family members people I could have heart-to-heart conversations with, they helped me reconnect to having fun and laughing a lot. That’s a gift no matter what, but after dealing with my long battle of chronic depression that hid me away too much, time with The Gang was a vital part of rebuilding my life. Supportive Environment Where I Could Find A My Voice and Unwrap My Own Gifts Through all three decades I’ve been blessed to have supervisors and co-workers who accepted me as I was as they encouraged me to grow. They could see strengths and talents in me that I couldn’t see or didn’t trust enough to share. I have been surrounded by people who cared for me as a person, not just a worker – Dr. Rob Williams (who hired me), Luella Mulder, Marian Patterson, Joanie Collyer and others. Each time I proof or edit, I have moments of joy and still feel Joanie’s presence from all she taught me when I started helping her with Sunday bulletins. One thing I didn’t trust earlier in my life was speaking for myself. Working as a Marble Receptionist certainly helped me practice using my voice. Sharing more of my talents in my various roles on the job built my confidence which also strengthened my voice. It can still be a challenge to think on my feet and share my opinion, but I’ve improved a lot. When I started as editor of the old MarbleUpdate newsletter, I had inner nudges for a while about writing these columns. Although I often
wore a hat when I worked Sunday Reception, I wasn’t sure about wearing my creative writing hat at Marble. I appreciate the encouragement Don Piper gave me about eight years ago to start using my voice in this way. It’s been a blessing on so many levels. My Introduction to Maine I heard Dr. Caliandro and Chef Ron talk often about Maine and in the summer of 1995 I visited Ron in Eastport for the first time along with Stuart, Gary and Judy. Maine quickly became the place where my soul was fed the most – from being out on the ocean in Ron’s boat, looking at the mountains of Acadia across an ever-changing bay, watching enthralling loons and eagles, walking on a rocky beach, staring up at the pines… and taking 1000s of photos. It was the staff responding so positively to my Maine photos that led me to share my photography in wider circles through creating photo cards. That helped me gain the confidence to be able to call myself an artist, something I’d always wanted but didn’t think I could because I couldn’t draw or paint. A Safe Space for My Dreams to Evolve Although I stopped trying to pursue a professional performing career decades ago, as part of the Marble staff I’ve had the chance to dust off my singing voice to perform for the Senior Adult Fellowship/PrimeTime and Homecoming. Years ago I was the one creating Marble’s printed posters and I realized I was living an adapted version of my old dream of working at an ad agency. I was creating on the job, yet in a positive environment. And through so many of the people I’ve worked with, seeds of new dreams have been planted. I could go on for 30 pages in order to share the many more gifts I’ve received working here. I’ll continue getting frustrated at times by the things I still let hold me back from being the More God created me to be, and I’ll hear the old inner critical voice taunt me with, “you’ll never change, others can but you can’t.” However, when that happens, I can stop and reflect again on how far I’ve actually come – in great part because I’ve been regularly nourished by this loving Marble Family. I will be eternally grateful.
