Lost or on a Detour?

CONNECTING WITH KIM & SIOBHAN Over the past 18 months, despite our physical separation, we found ways to connect, learn, pray, and worship with one another. This time has helped many of us reconnect with ourselves, with our faith, and with each other. We have come together to keep loneliness at bay, and our children engaged. We have celebrated answered prayers, both large and small. We have mourned and cried with one another. And, we have grown our family as we welcomed new members. While things have begun to open up, we know for many of us, connecting with Marble online will continue to be necessary. We are fully committed to keeping everyone together on the journey. We are excited to invite you to join us in September for an online Tea Time, as we share our summer joys and

fall dreams. In October, put that tea in a to-go cup, because we’re going on a virtual Fall foliage walk to take in all the beauty of God’s Creation. And in November we’ll come together to count our blessings. This is in addition to all the wonderful ways you can continue to participate online at Marble – Prayer Time, Bible Study, Outreach, Small Groups, Worship, and more! We know it can be hard to find your place sometimes but know that at Marble we’re saving you a seat. MARBLE RACIAL JUSTICE SERIES In May 2020, not long after video footage of George Floyd’s murder went viral, actions against racial injustice sprang up around the country. At Marble we recognized spiritual and moral imperatives to take up the work of anti-racism from a faith perspective in meaningful ways. The clergy hosted the first dialogue on racial injustice following Worship in June 2020. Since then, we have continued these efforts with once-monthly events to draw awareness to the racial injustices that impact our congregation and community; also discussing the intersection of systemic racism with other issues that trouble our world: global warming and voting disenfranchisement. This fall our journey continues! With our upcoming Racial Justice Series, our foci will be: 1. Extending grace to each other as we acknowledge areas for personal growth 2. Inviting each other into a space of personal transformation 3. Highlighting ways to engage in the work of anti-racism in our church and our community Moreover, we look forward to drawing various ministries into the conversation as we explore the intersections of race and gender, race and sexual orientation, race and economic exploitation, and more!

So many times in life we are conditioned to bury pieces of ourselves that make other people uncomfortable. We are often told by the world that our dreams are too big, that our hopes are idealistic, and, that the fullest of who we are is too much. One day, we are sixteen with big dreams and it feels like in an instant you become a disillusioned adult, consumed Come closer… I have to tell you a secret! Okay, so by the status quo. Reflections from the Editor By Karla Fritsch

Over these next few months as the leaves start to shed their green and the golds, oranges and reds of Autumn start to break forth, a new year is unfolding. I used to get easily excited about the new school and church year. I’ll confess part of it was because it was time to buy new pens and notebooks, something I’ve always enjoyed. However, these days I’m struggling with it all. The expectancy of new beginnings I used to feel is harder to find. The Covid-19 pandemic is still raging, along with wildfires and floods, the crisis in Afghanistan, earthquake devastation in Haiti, continued division in the US… the list goes on and on. I realize that life always has its tragedies. Uncertainties and change are a constant, yet I don’t think I was as acutely aware of them day in and day out. Or, maybe it’s because I used to be able to see possibilities much more clearly which helped balance my view. Even though I’ve witnessed blessings in the midst of this especially crazy 2020-2021, I’m having a tough time focusing on the possibilities on the other side of this. Part of it might be age. Although we gain some wisdom through the years, when we’re young it seems so natural to live fully in the moment and still clearly envision all sorts of dreams for our futures.

Age has also affected my actual vision. My sixtyyear-old eyes need the help of reading glasses more and more to read fine print. Recently, that has me asking myself – through what lenses am I viewing life? Being bombarded with all the troubling news in the world, I also need a magnifying glass to help me see possibilities through all the mess. If only it were as easy as using the magnifier app on my iPhone. With a simple slide of my finger not only can I increase the size of what I’m looking at, but I can even add more light to it. Of course, God is the best magnifier. Reading the Daily Word devotional, saying my prayers, listening to my “Inspire Me” playlist and watching the sky are some of the ways I can hold God’s magnifying glass up to my world to see the better in it. I want to use those lenses to help me rediscover my dreams, my hopes, to view and believe that there is a better life for myself. If I can keep finding ways to look through God-made lenses – the good, the love, the hope, the possibilities become clearly visible.

It was exciting and meaningful to have limitedcapacity, in-person Worship and Fellowship on Fifth afterwards on three Sundays in August. It gave our Ushers, Staff and Board a chance to ensure all is ready as we prepare to open our doors to a larger congregation this fall.

We want to be good stewards of the earth God created, so although a small quantity of printed bulletins will be available in the Sanctuary, we encourage you
