How To Protect Yourself As A Consumer

On March 15th every year, World Consumer Rights Day is observed to promote awareness on consumer needs and rights. This day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the influence of consumers and call for the protection of their rights. The creation of International Consumer Rights Day was Inspired by John F. Kennedy

The Consumer Protection Act, 1986, in India outlines some fundamental consumer rights, such as the right to information about the nature, extent, potency, purity, standard, price, and quality of goods and services; the right to choose among various goods and services; the right to protection from potentially harmful goods and services; the right to be heard and to seek redress; and the right to consumer education.

Here are some fundamental rights that every consumer should be aware of:

1. The right to basic needs satisfaction entails having access to basic goods and services such as adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, public utilities, water, and sanitation

2. The right to safety entails being safeguarded against potentially hazardous products, manufacturing processes, and services.

3. The right to information, which includes the right to access information necessary to make an informed decision and the protection against deceptive or false advertising and labeling.

4. The freedom to select from a variety of goods and services that are provided at affordable prices and with a guarantee of satisfactory quality.

5 The right to be heard - to have consumer interests represented in the development and implementation of public policy

6. The right to redress- the ability to obtain a just resolution of claims, including monetary compensation in the event of deceit, poor quality products, or subpar services

7 The right to consumer education entails acquiring the knowledge and skills required to make informed, confident purchases of goods and services, as well as being aware of basic consumer rights and responsibilities and knowing how to exercise them

8 The right to a healthy environment, which means having the freedom to live and work in a space that is not hazardous to the wellbeing of both current and future generations.

Every year, the goal of World Consumer Rights Day is to increase consumer awareness of their needs and rights. Consumer rights are among the most fundamental human rights because they protect people from the wrongdoings of businesses and the products they sell. It empowers the common man to fight for his consumer rights, to fight against companies' false promises to sell their products, and, most importantly, consumer rights serve as a legal weapon against corporate injustices.
