INTRODUCTION

The US military has a long history of neglecting the needs of veterans who have served in combat or remote outposts. Many of these veterans leave service with mental health issues that are often overlooked by the government. At Echo Village, veterans who are too young to retire but too old for active duty have a place to recover and reflect on their experiences.

Located in Eugene, Oregon, the property features six micro-housing units connected by a shared greenspace. This close-knit community prioritizes mental healthcare through a balance of shared community spaces and private retreats.

The construction of the micro-housing units utilizes 3D-printed lavacrete for the structure, topped with Kingspan’s Quadcore LEC Insulated roof panels and 160 Tubular Solatube skylights. Each unit also incorporates Kingspan’s Rainwater Harvesting Slimline Tank, enabling rainwater collection to help offset water costs.

These micro-housing units are designed with sustainable systems to ensure they are both energy-efficient and cost-effective, addressing the financial challenges many veterans face while providing the support they need.

Each microhome is topped with local Douglas Fir rafters that holds up the Kingspan roof including an opening that spans the full roof.

This feature allows sunlight bathe the top of the room in different times of the day, creating unique ambience inside the home.

The homes also include a small patio covered with an angled, sharp wooden pergola that contrasts the smooth curves of the lavacrete walls. This aspect was included with the intentions of encouraging community engagement as well as

an opportunity for the residents to show their personalities through their patios.

For instance, many veterans get into gardening after their service so they can do that in their cozy patio.

The micro-housing community in Eugene, Oregon reflects a commitment to helping the long-overlooked struggles of middle-aged US military veterans, specifically those who have been in combat or stationed at an outpost. These people suffer from depression (20%), PTSD (2-17%), anxiety (7.9%), and qualify as low income (1.6 million veterans as of 2019).

To assist with this reality, the property features six micro-housing units interconnected by a shared greenspace which fosters a balance between community connection and personal privacy to support mental health recovery.

The units are sustainably built with 3D-printed lavac rete walls, with Kingspan Quadcore LEC Insulated roof panels and 160 Tubular Solatubes above. Additionally, rainwater is collected using Kingspan’s Rainwater Harvesting Slimline Tank. These additions allow reduced water, energy, heating, and cooling costs for all residents.

As a whole, the community is not just designed for veterans, but also the family and caregivers that look after them. Our residents Stanford and Chloe, a father-daughter duo that lives together, would be an example. Stanford is a 55 year-old military veteran who needs help with his mental health. Chloe is a semi-permanent resident in her mid-20s who looks after her father while she’s off from her job as a flight attendant.

Each micro-housing unit has a primary bedroom and a loft space that can either be used as a second bedroom, like in Stanford and Chloe’s set up, or storage. Each unit also includes a full kitchen, a living space, a bathroom, and a patio with a covering pergola. The community itself is anchored by a central fire pit where gatherings can take place.
