Small Town Escapes

Behold the special confluence of culture, scenery and vitality in our communities

Silverton Oregon’s Garden City Snowmelt cascades across ancient lava flows and meanders its way through hilly forests. About 20 minutes from the state’s capital and an hour south of Portland, this waterway – Silver Creek – rolls through a town of just over 10,000 people... with good schools, quality healthcare facilities, friendly businesses, gardens, galleries, and a welcoming spirit that offers engaging activities and diversions for every age bracket – all year-round. Welcome to Silverton.

Downtown Silverton

Beautifully preserved historic buildings are home to a medley of boutique galleries, antique shops, creekside restaurants and cafés, a legendary cinema, and plenty of places to sample craft beer and regional wines. People flow from one downtown business to the next on the evening of the “First Friday” of each month to mingle and see the new art exhibits.

Step Back in Time Silverton Country Historical Society & Museum 428 S. Water St., Silverton 503-873-7070 silvertonmuseum.org Open Saturdays & Sundays, 1 - 4 p.m. from March through November. Donations accepted.

A remarkable collection of regional history is on display in the 1908 Ames-Warnock-Burch House. Each room illustrates different aspects of life in Silverton over the last 150 years. Original cartoons by local “country boy” and William Randolph Hearst’s top cartoonist, Homer Davenport, are part of the collection. The grounds also offer a look inside Silverton’s train depot and a World War II lookout post.

Hemmed in by prairies, hills, and creeks, the beautiful terrain that encompasses Silverton, Mount Angel, and nearby Scotts Mills was called “Silverton Country” by the pioneers that settled this area. There are plenty of reminders of myriad histories: the Molala and Kalupuya Peoples, the settlers, early industrialists and loggers, faith-seekers from Switzerland, enclaves of free-thinkers and creatives, and so much more. Our communities are conscious of the past, dedicated to preserving it, and are looking forward to sharing it with you.

Silverton Commercial Historic District

Pick up a self-guided walking tour map of downtown’s historic buildings at the Chamber Visitor Center, 426 S. Water St. and look out for the Historical Society’s free-standing markers with laser-etched archival images giving you a chance to compare the past with the present.

History and culture-enthusiasts should visit the Abbey’s museum, with a diverse assortment of natural history specimens and artifacts from around the world – including a few notable oddities. Also, don’t miss the famous library designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.

Created to Inspire As early as the late 19th Century, artists of all disciplines have called Silverton and Mount Angel home. This immersive environment provided a launch for political cartoonist Homer Davenport, a landscape for photographer June Drake, and even Clark Gable passed through in his early days. The Benedictine Sisters at Queen of Angels Monastery in Mount Angel fostered an arts college in the 1960s that attracted many talented individuals from around the country, most of whom decided to stay and establish the area’s artistic guilds and studios that give the towns their style and sense of creative fun today. Plus, the very walls of Silverton’s buildings have been turned into canvases...
