Something to Do

Communities across the state – and across the nation – have lost their local voice. The most recent that came to my attention was The Chronicle presenting hyper-local news for Springfield, Cottage Grove, Creswell and Pleasant Hill, Oregon. Founded in 1909, it published its last edition Aug. 11, 2026.

“After years of barely hanging on, we have no choice but to let go,” wrote Erin Tierney-Heggenstaller, executive editor and part owner of the paper. “We fought until the very last line.”

It is sad to see dedicated people who work hard and believe in the importance of what they do have to walk away. They didn’t love their community any less. They didn’t work less efficiently. They didn’t believe less fervently. The pieces just didn’t come together in time to sustain the newspaper.

The Chronicle took first place in General Excellence in the most recent Pacific Northwest Newspaper competition, a contest the included papers from Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Awards were presented in July. The Canyon Weekly, our paper that serves the Santiam Canyon, competed in the same circulation category. It took second in General Excellence.

Our Town, this edition that serves Silverton, Mt. Angel and Scotts Mills, took second in General Excellence in its category, too. We’re able to continue to do good work because we have your support.

History comes back to life at Silverton Cemetery Sept. 12

By Melissa Wagoner Once a year some of Silverton’s dear departed are brought back to life during the annual Tombstone Tales event held at the Silverton Cemetery on McClaine Street.

“Tombstone Tales gives visitors a chance to spend an evening touring the cemetery and [learning] about a figure from history from a live performer in period costume alongside the subject’s actual grave marker…” the event press release said. “This year brings a fresh line up of important Silvertonians back to life, plus one returning favorite.”

That favorite – unsurprisingly Homer Davenport – will once again be portrayed by Charles Schneider, an actor previously known for his roles in Tombstone (the movie) and Zodiac. Others making an appearance alongside Davenport are pioneer Joseph Henry Moser, portrayed by his great grandson, George Pool; Liberal University instructor Minnie Page Hosmer, played by Thai Reed; Geneva Wolfard Allen, who built the Victorian home on Pine

Street, portrayed by Molly Moreland; and James “Jim” Buff, an eccentric teacher, played by Gus Frederick.

“The event is special in that it honors our past by connecting people across time in a sacred, historical place of memory,” event founder Carrie Alexandria Caster said. “It’s also special because the event demonstrates the living connections among people… it’s a true community collaboration involving help from businesses, government, arts and culture groups, history lovers and volunteers. Community response to Tombstone Tales has been overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic, and we believe it will continue to grow and celebrate Silverton’s cultural heritage.”

This year’s free event will take place on Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.

Parking is available across the street from the cemetery at Earthlight Technologies. Attendees should be prepared for uneven terrain. Light refreshments and live music by the Tombstone Strings will be provided.

“This event is for everyone,” Caster said, “especially those with an interest in Silverton and a desire to know more about our fascinating history, or those simply wanting a memorable evening of time travel.”

Harvesting fruits and vegetables is the reward home gardeners receive after months of hard work. But all that fresh produce can sometimes feel daunting.

That’s why the Scotts Mills Grange is hosting a “Canning with Confidence” class on Sept. 12, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Grange Hall on Fourth Street.

There is always something new to discover at The Oregon Garden, say Garden officials.

From learning how to grow a favorite flower to trying a new creative activity, practicing yoga with the family, or gaining a deeper understanding of horticulture and environmental stewardship, Garden University at The Oregon Garden offers opportunities to learn, explore and connect in a beautiful setting.

The Silverton City Council unanimously approved Republic Services request for an 8.6% rate increase at its Aug. 19 meeting.

Councilors also considered a 6.1% option, but chose the 8.6% after Republic officials noted the company would absorb a projected 7.5% increase in 2027 in the company’s expenditures.

Republic representatives told the council July 15 that the larger figure was based on current challenges in state landfill operations.

Approving the 8.6% now means there will be a longer interval before Republic comes back with a future rate increase request.

The most recent Republic request, a 23% increase, was approved July 1, 2024. Republic is guaranteed a 10% return on its operations in its franchise agreement with the city.

The rate approved Aug. 19 means that the customer who uses a 35-gallon cart will see the monthly fee rise from $39.37 to $42.76 as of Oct. 1.

For the larger 95-gallon cart, the fee rises from $52.24 to $56.73. No changes were made in the recycling, glass and yard waste pickups that are part of the Republic service.

Hobart Road at the north end of town. The corner is viewed as one of Silverton’s most dangerous. The intersection, which has an annual traffic load of more than 11,000 vehicles, currently features stop signs on Hobart.

There were 30 reported crashes at the intersection during the study period.

The predominant crash causes were failure to yield right-of-way (80%) and view obscured (10%). The crashes resulted in zero fatalities, 18 injuries and 12 crashes that featured property damage only. The intersection’s observed crash rate is 1.43 crashes per million entering vehicles (CMEV).

This is higher than the statewide critical crash rate of 0.408 CMEV for similar intersections in urban areas.

ODOT paid for the crash study, but there are no funds available for remedies, including the preferred ODOT solution of a roundabout.

Bond PAC Public meeting Sept. 3

By Stephen Floyd Local citizens are forming a political action committee (PAC) to support an $87 million facilities bond for the Silver Falls School District, with a community meeting set to share their vision.

“Yes for Silver Falls Schools” is being formed to support Measure 24-528 on the Nov. 3 ballot, which would fund rebuilding Silverton Middle School, a new westside K-8 school and other improvements.

A public meeting is scheduled for Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Festhalle in Mt. Angel for PAC organizers to answer questions and encourage interested residents to join the group.

PAC campaign manager Amy Coyle said the goal is to approach potential voters as fellow community members and “meet people where they are.

“We know people want to understand what they’re voting on, and we want to make sure they have accurate information and plenty of opportunities to have those conversations,” said Coyle.

The PAC grew out of a long-range facility planning committee that met earlier this year to advise the SFSD Board on whether or not to propose the bond.

Coyle served on the committee as a parent with more than 30 other community members, who included fellow parents, educators, district administrators and school board members. She said the process was very “organic” and inclusive, and the proposal which went before the board reflected the committee’s hard work.

“There was never a point that I felt the district leaders were trying to push the

committee in one direction or another – it was a truly organic process,” said Coyle.

The PAC will have its work cut out for it. SFSD voters turned down a bond measure in 2023. The $137 million bond for district-wide improvements received 55.8% “no” votes. A $25 million bond to rebuild Eugene Field School was defeated in 2014 with 55.79% in opposition.

According to a poll of likely district voters published in July, 47% supported the bond after being given details of the proposal and 43% were opposed. The remaining 10% were undecided or declined to answer. With a 4% margin of error these results were not decisive. Neither side achieved a clear majority.

Coyle said the current bond is different.

It maintains the existing property tax rate of a bond expiring in July of next year, so there would be no tax increase.

Additionally, rather than casting a wide net like the 2023 measure, the 2026 bond measure targets specific needs for new school buildings, while making other building improvements.

She also noted the state will grant an additional $10 million to the district if voters pass the bond. That would allow local tax dollars to stretch further.

When it comes to bond opposition, Coyle said the PAC wants to hear people out and take opportunities to address any misconceptions about what the bond is and what it would be used for. She said they know there is “long-standing distrust” in the district, and addressing these concerns will require “listening to understand.”

Something to Think About

Neurodiversity Helping every child find their path to success

By Melissa Wagoner School can be a challenge for neurodivergent kids – those whose brains process information, learn, communicate, or regulate emotions differently than their “neurotypical” counterparts.

They can face difficulties academically, emotionally and socially depending on the type and scope of their neurodivergence and also on the support they receive at school and at home.

It’s a topic Beven Byrnes – the founder and executive director of Bridges Middle School, a Portland school designed for students with learning differences – has thought a lot about.

“I am a neurodiverse adult raising four neurodiverse children,” Byrnes said. And she was lucky enough, during her elementary and high school years, to benefit from an education model that worked well for her neurodivergent brain. “[T]hat led to my passion for alternative education…” Byrnes said, “and giving a voice to those who aren’t necessarily given a voice.”

Byrnes knows not everyone has access to the kind of education Bridges – a small, tuition-based institution and the only one of its kind in the state – can provide. And there are a host of factors can influence the educational outcome for a neurodivergent child.

That has been the case for the four mothers of neurodivergent children whom Our Town recently spoke with. Each shared what elements of their child’s educational experience have worked, what hasn’t worked and how parents can advocate for their own neurodivergent children.

To protect their privacy, their names and the names of their children have, in some cases, been altered or omitted.

Anna

When Anna is asked to describe her 11-year-old daughter, Elaina, she is effusive.

“Elaina is such a bubbly, fun, happy, kindhearted kid and definitely… a social butterfly,” Anna said. “She is extremely smart and a fast learner when she finds a subject she is interested in.”

But school can be a challenge. Sitting still in a seat, remaining quiet during instruction, staying on task are all difficult for Elaina who has been diagnosed with “a fairly severe combined type” of ADHD and is possibly on the autism spectrum as well.

“She gets distracted, is impulsive and tends to speak every thought that enters her mind,” Anna said. “She can get overwhelmed easily by things that others don’t even notice – sounds in the classroom, the view outside the window, feeling uncomfortable in her clothing, etc. Tests and assignments can be frustrating and cause anxiety, especially when they are timed.”

To support Elaina’s success, Anna has worked both with her doctor to find medications that help her stay calm, and with Robert Frost Elementary School, where Elaina attends,

to create a plan for her future academic success. Initially that meant getting her access to both an Individualized Education Program (IEP) – a kind of roadmap – and a 504 Plan for accommodations like privacy screens, fidget objects, headphones, a quiet space for testing, a special seating chart and access to a sensory room for brain breaks. “[But] one of the greatest tools that we used for Elaina was Robert Frost’s ‘Check-in, Check-out’ system to help reinforce good behavior,” Anna said. “They get scored during different periods of their school day. If they meet their goal, there is usually a small reward… Elaina loved getting her prize and it kept her motivated even when school became difficult.”

Methods like these are what Byrnes uses at Bridges and what she would like to see used elsewhere as well.

“I think there are small changes we can make even in traditional settings,” she confirmed. “We can set up environments that have less distractions and stimuli, we can have wiggle benches, fidgets… calm zones… Because there’s no shame in taking a brain break.”

In fact, that’s a stigma she especially wants removed – for all students and faculty as well.

“We’re all such products of the human condition, particularly women who are neurodivergent,” Byrnes said. “The world has taught us our worth is in production. But what I have found is we reach much greater efficiency and effectiveness when we slow down and pause. A three-breath pause can emotionally shift [a situation].”

“As a parent and educator, my main concern was ensuring their neurodiversity wasn’t misinterpreted as ‘naughty’ or bad behavior, which made getting proper evaluations so essential,” Amy said. And securing a 504 Plan.

“The 504 plans serve as an essential roadmap,” she explained.

“They give me specific accommodations to monitor – like asking J if his wiggle seat is helping him complete tasks, or checking if I’s multi-step assignments are being broken down. It allows for precise, productive communication with their teachers.”

Which is key according to Byrnes who agreed that communication between children and parents – asking questions that go beyond, “how was your day?” – as well as communication with school counselors and teachers is essential.

“Help the staff by working them directly, identify early and develop strategies at home,” she said. She described the way a consistent home routine can not only help a child prepare for school, but also help a parent discover what works for their child – like having access to a quiet space when they begin feeling overwhelmed.

“Not all schools are set up for a break room,” Byrnes pointed out. “But another strategy is a bathroom break.”

This can be especially helpful for older students who don’t want to draw attention to themselves.

“School is often fast paced, and children are expected to be quiet, calm and sitting still during instruction time,” she said. “Doodling, fidgeting or stimming is seen as a disruptive distraction, but for many neurodivergent children, this is how they regulate their bodies.”

But consistent communication can be tough, according to Amy who admitted, “I often have to be direct and persistent, which can make you feel like ‘that parent’ staff dread seeing… but direct communication is crucial… Parents are the experts on their kids, [who] often present differently in a classroom setting. Clear, transparent communication about those differences helps align support strategies on both sides.

It’s a change Anna would also like to see.

Amy has spent her career working, first as an instructional mentor, then as an assistant principal and principal. So she knows the lack of time, funding and increased pressure to cover curriculum for “high-stakes testing” in schools is challenging. But she also thinks there are ways to make sure neurodiverse learners – like her two sons – receive the education they deserve.

“Curiosity is essential,” she said. “It takes work to look beyond a single test score or behavior, but without digging into multiple data points, it’s easy to misinterpret a student’s performance.”

But collaboration can sometimes feel like an uphill battle, according to Melissa, whose concerns about her son’s difficulty learning to read fell on deaf ears for three years.

“I asked more than one teacher, ‘Is he dyslexic?’” Melissa recalled. “And they all said, ‘No, no.’… Because he’s smart enough to guess what the word is.”

It’s a situation Byrnes said is more common than people might think.

“Both of my boys are bright and excited to learn, but their neurodiversity presents differently,” she explained.

“Often... neurodivergent kiddos – particularly girls – tend to fall through the cracks because their symptoms can be more inward…” Byrnes said. Or, in the case of Melissa’s son, because they are disguised by extreme intelligence in other areas. “But while girls may spend lunches alone… boys cause more immediate problems for the teacher, so they get noticed.”

discovered he is indeed dyslexic. That means he qualifies for an IEP, which Melissa hoped would get her son the individualized instruction he desperately needs.

“But for two and a half months he didn’t get any services under his IEP…” she said, recalling her frustration when, at the fall school conference, her son’s fourth grade teacher didn’t appear to know – despite clarifying emails from Melissa and meetings with the district’s special education department – that he had been diagnosed with dyslexia or that he had an IEP.

There is just too much expected of each teacher having so many kids with so many different issues.”

“She was like, ‘He’s really smart in math, but his reading isn’t great,” Melissa recalled. “And I was like, ‘Yes!’” That experience led Melissa to not only worry about her son’s education in the coming year, but also to wonder how many other students aren’t getting the free appropriate public education (FAPE) guaranteed by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. “It has to do with the district having limited resources that are directed to the fires they need to put out…” Melissa said.

“But I want them to take accountability and be transparent and then everybody could work together.”

That necessity for cooperation is something K also learned when her son, M – diagnosed with ADHD and autism spectrum disorder – began attending Silverton High School 20 years ago. But in M’s case that cooperation was already in place and streamlined because of his specific needs.

“I can’t stress enough how much of a help Silverton School District was,” she said. “He had autism/ socialization classes every week… He had a special period every day for helping him organize himself, turn things in, do homework he needed to do.”

It’s a situation Byrnes thinks can be eased initially by changing the school environment.

“The shift I see that needs to happen is, instead of, ‘How can neurodivergent people be a part of my setting?’ – ‘How can I provide a setting where a neurodivergent person can find success?’ We don’t really allow for that. We sort of demand everyone, no matter what… fit into our space… But what we have found is kids will do well when they can. And the more we can create those conditions, the more they will thrive.”

Key elements, according to Byrnes, include consistency and clear expectations in both physical spaces and in behavior.

“Having clear expectations creates a calming of anxiety,” she said. “Because without consistency kids don’t feel safe. When they don’t know what to expect that’s when [problems arise]. I don’t mean be rigid, I mean, ‘These are the guidelines within which we operate from a place of consistency.’ Same with kids in the home. The more consistency kids have the more they can relax. That part of their brain that is thinking, ‘What do we do next?’ is freed up.”

She also believes there is a need for a paradigm shift in how all of society – including educators – think about neurodivergence.

“The language matters,” Byrnes said. “It’s ever evolving… and the term neurodivergence is newer… I think at the core it needs to shift from deficit to asset.”

Stick to a consistent routine at home – even during the summer.

Practice at home – education doesn’t have to end when the school bell rings.

Ask questions – discover what worries your child about starting school.

Recognize loss – kids might be mourning a change in school, teacher or friend group.

Rehearse – learn the schedule and talk about a typical classroom day, visit the campus, try on school clothes.

Develop strategies at home – then share what works and doesn’t work with the teacher.

Communicate – build a relationship with the school, especially the teacher and the counselor.

Cooperate – work collaboratively with all your resources both within the school district and outside it.

Be curious – ask your child specific questions about school.

Homework – stay informed about what is due and when.

Be aware – watch for changes in the school schedule that your child should know about ahead of time.

Conferences – take advantage of those opportunities to check in.

Advocate – speak up.

Silverton Goodwill growing Silverton will be the home of a new, expanded Goodwill facility sometime next year.

Ground was broken recently on a 2.89-acre site at the north end of town. Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette officials said that they hoped to finish the building and have an opening celebration by sometime next spring or early in the summer.

“We outgrew the old facility,” Haley Platt, public relations manager for Goodwill told Our Town. “It’s a bigger lot with more space for bigger classrooms so that we can continue to provide classes and support services.”

SFSD new admins Several positions added

By Stephen Floyd The Silverton Falls School District (SFSD) is starting this school year with multiple new administrators, including new top admins at Silverton Middle School (SMS).

At the middle school, new principal Kathy Beyer is taking over from former Principal Brett Davisson who accepted a principal position with Oregon Carter Academy.

Beyer joins SFSD from Lincoln County, where she previously served as a school administrator at Toledo Jr./ Sr. High School and Newport High School. In a press release, the district said Beyer’s background growing up in rural Mississippi has given her unique insights into leadership and communication in a small-town environment.

At the district level, Director of Special Services Spencer McEwen began this school year leading programs for students who benefit from specialized supports including special education. He has prior administrative experience with the Estacada School District and the Oregon Trail School District, and also has experience as a teacher and special educator at the elementary level.

McEwen joins Assistant Superintendent Vicky Storey among news faces in the district office. Storey began her role May 1 after a long career with the North Santiam School District including four years as principal of Stayton High School.

The new facility will sit on a triangular-shaped lot north of Jefferson Street, east of Highway 214 and south of Hobart Road.

Once Beyer began in her new role, she hired Assistant Principal Ryan Taylor, who takes over after the retirement of former Assistant Principal Scott Buchheit.

The district also hired new Director of Facilities and Maintenance Javier Torres, who joined SFSD after 20 years with the North Clackamas School District performing facilities and custodial work. In a news release about his hiring in June, the district said Torres has “a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to maintain safe, welcoming, and efficient learning environments.”

Platt said a ribbon-cutting and grand opening are being planned for the new facility.

Taylor was previously the athletics/activities director for the Clover Park School District, in Lakewood, Washington. He held a similar position at Tigard High School. He has experience working in diverse school communities including those with racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversification.

Other administrative positions had “interim” status removed including Evergreen and Victor Point Principal Patrick Mulligan, Scotts Mills Principal Rachel Ayers, Silverton High School Principal Kirstin Jorgenson and Director of Student Wellness and Achievement Elyse Hansen.

The current building on South Water Street has 10,000 square feet and 57 parking spaces. The new facility will be 25,000 square feet and the lot has room for 93 cars.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” Platt said.

A former patient administrator for Legacy Silverton Medical Center has been ordered to repay more than $40,000 stolen from the institution after accepting a plea deal for felony theft.

The thefts were first reported to the Silverton Police Department in July of 2025, and Stokes was arrested that December.

Brieanna Sue Stokes, 40, of Oregon City, pleaded guilty Aug. 21 in Marion County Circuit Court to aggravated first-degree theft.

Global experience comes to JFK High

By Melissa Wagoner Hope Stansell, the new agricultural sciences teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Mt. Angel, has a resume that looks a little bit different than her counterparts.

“I did a fellowship abroad in Ghana for nine months with the International Agricultural Education Fellowship Program (IAEFP),” Stansell said.

It was an experience – her first traveling outside the country – that changed her, both as a person and as a teacher.

“It was incredibly real...” she said. “At the time it was really hard, but you gain so much perspective. Now, I realize I lived in this bubble.”

“In Ghana the national language is English, but there are a lot of native dialects,” Stansell explained. “So the proficiency levels are broad.”

Slowing down her speech was helpful, Stansell found, but so was changing the order in which she taught.

“I tend to like reversing it and doing inquisitive learning first, then going back,” Stansell described. “It gives the students more [control] and engages them more.”

Attending Oregon State University, where she received a degree in Ag Sciences, Stansell learned about the IEAFP program from professors who had once attended themselves and who encouraged her to give it a try. Once enrolled, she chose Ghana because that was the only option that did not require Spanish fluency.

“Each of us were placed in a community and partnered with a science teacher,” Stansell said. “We started school gardens and helped with 4-H.” She also learned two valuable lessons – how to make do with few resources and how to teach ag science to a classroom

“I’m so excited to be here,” Stansell said.

“This is somewhere I can see myself for my career.”

Teaching Intro to Ag, Animal Sciences and Woodshop during the coming year, Stansell is most excited about the introductory class.

“Intro is my favorite class to teach because I get to cover everything,” she explained.

“And even though there are kids who say, ‘I don’t want to be here,’ we do something with soils [for example], and they say, ‘Wow!’” She is also excited to grow the school’s FFA program.

“I would love to see more inclusivity in the chapter and the students…” she said. “Because I love community. And ag teachers can be the hub of community…

And I feel so privileged and honored I get to be in these young people’s lives. They really are our future.”

The Roman Road That Leads to Life by Gregg Harris

T

he Romans were extraordinary road builders. They constructed tens of thousands of miles of paved highways connecting cities, military outposts, ports, and provinces throughout their empire. Many still remain. These roads had been built primarily to move Roman soldiers and commerce efficiently from one place to another. But in the providence of God, the same roads that carried Caesar's armies also carried Christ's apostles and evangelists throughout the empire.

But there is another "Roman Road" that has carried the Gospel around the world. It is not made of stone. It is a series of verses found in Paul's letter to the Christians in Rome. There he explains the problem of man's sin, the righteous judgment of God, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the way by which we can be reconciled to God. So, let’s take a walk down the Roman Road together.

“The Gospel of Christ” Our journey begins at Romans 1:16: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.” “Gospel” means “good news.”

What we are about to discover is the good news concerning Jesus Christ. But to appreciate this good news, we must first hear and believe the bad news.

“All Have Sinned.”

Our first stop is Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Notice the word all. Paul does not say that some of us have sinned. He places all mankind into the same category. All have sinned.

Sin is more than committing murder, adultery, or theft. Sin is anything that is contrary to the will of God. Jesus taught us that hatred is murderous in its nature, and that lust is as adultery. Greed is sin. Selfishness is sin.

But there is a deeper problem. We were created by God for the purpose of knowing and loving Him. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matt. 22:37).

Who has ever done this perfectly? We have not merely made mistakes. We have "fallen short of the glory of God" by failing to display what God is like. So, that is the bad news for which the Gospel provides the solution.

“The Wages of Sin” The Roman Road continues to Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Christianity is not the story of mankind searching for God. It is the story of God coming down to rescue sinful mankind. Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became truly man while remaining truly God. He lived the perfect life that we have all failed to live. He never sinned. And yet He agreed to die. Why?

When Jesus died on the cross, He was not merely providing an inspiring example of sacrificial love, though it was that. He was actually bearing the judgment that is due to all sinners. Our sin creates a debt that we can only pay by dying. At the cross, God's justice and mercy met, and both were satisfied.

A wage is something we have earned. When an employer gives you your paycheck, he is not giving you a gift. You have earned it by what you have done. Paul says that sin also earns a wage for us. And that wage is death.

Physical death entered the world because of sin, but the Bible speaks of an even more terrible aspect of death: eternal separation from God under His righteous judgment.

God is loving, but He is also perfectly holy and just. A good judge cannot simply ignore evil. If a human judge knowingly allowed murderers, rapists, and thieves to go free without justice, we would not applaud him for being loving. We would condemn him for being corrupt. How much more must the Judge of all the earth do what is right? God has to punish every sin.

Christ took the sinner's judgment upon Himself, and the sinner who trusts in Christ has Christ’s righteousness applied to his account as a gift.

That is how forgiveness can be freely offered without God pretending that sin does not matter. The penalty has been paid in full. And notice when God loved us. Not after we cleaned ourselves up. Not after we became religious. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” He loved us before we knew Him.

There is another "Roman Road" that has carried the Gospel around the world. It is not made of stone. The problem, therefore, is not merely that our lives are unhappy or unfulfilled. Our greatest problem is that our sin has separated us from our Creator. But Romans 6:23 does not end with death.

“The Gift of God” Our next stop on this road is the second part of Romans 6:23. “But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Though death is the wage we have earned by our sin, eternal life is the gift of God that we do not deserve.

“Christ Died for Us.” How then can a righteous God forgive guilty sinners without compromising His justice? The answer is found at our next stop. Romans 5:8:

“Believe In Your Heart.”

So, what must we do to be saved? Paul gives the answer at our next stop, Romans 10:9: “… if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Christian faith is not merely agreeing that Jesus once existed. It is trusting in who He is and what He has done for us. Jesus died for sinners, but He did not remain in the grave.

The resurrection of Jesus is God’s declaration that Jesus truly is the Son of God, that His sacrifice was accepted, that death has been conquered, and that we can be reconciled.

To confess Jesus as Lord means more than just saying the words. It is to acknowledge Him

for who He truly is—Lord—and to place our confidence in Him rather than in ourselves.

Paul continues in Romans 10:13: “For 'whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’” There is that wonderful word: whoever. It does not say whoever has lived a respectable life. It says “whoever calls upon the name of the LORD shall be saved.” This good news is offered freely to all sinners.

“Justified By Faith Alone” And what happens to the person who believes? Our next stop is Romans 5:1. There Paul tells us: “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The word justified is enormously important. To be justified means to be declared righteous in the court of God’s justice. The sinner who trusts in Christ is no longer under condemnation because Christ has taken his guilt upon Himself. God then credits Christ's righteousness to the believing sinner because his debt has been paid.

Therefore, Paul says, “we have peace with God.” This is far more than just experiencing a peaceful feeling. It means the hostility between us and God, caused by our rebellion against Him, has ended. We have been reconciled.

And this salvation is received entirely by faith, not by anything we do, but by what we believe.

“There Is No Condemnation.”

The Roman Road brings us finally to one of the most glorious statements in the entire Bible, Romans 8:1: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” The condemnation that rightfully belongs to us has already fallen upon Christ at the cross. Jesus paid it all. The only question is whether or not we are “in Christ.”

Jesus Christ has done for us what we could never do for ourselves. He has lived the perfect life we should have lived. He has died the horrible death our sins deserve. And He has risen triumphantly from the grave to prove that God’s plan of salvation really works.

So, turn from your sin. Place your trust in Jesus. Call upon Him in prayer. The road to your salvation is now wide open. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Take Him at His word, and believe. This Roman Road leads to eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

Synergy Yoga and Play Café for all ages to open in Silverton

“My husband was military, so I’ve been to kids’ play areas all over the country,” Summers said.

When yoga teacher, Nicholl Summers, was given the opportunity to open her own studio at 309 S. Water St. in Silverton, she knew it wouldn’t be a run of the mill studio.

And she’s incorporating her favorite elements from each.

“The play space is available free of charge to all café and yoga guests so you can enjoy your downtime while your children/grandchildren play in an environment that is healthy, happy and safe,” Summers wrote in a post on the Synergy Facebook page.

“One of my favorite places [to teach] was a coffee shop,” she admitted, “and another was a kids’ play area.”

That’s how the idea for Synergy Yoga and Play Café came about.

“I’ve wanted to do this for so long…” Summers said. “I want everyone who comes here to do something that’s authentic for them.”

“The last 10 years I’ve volunteered with Hike it Baby – we’re part of OutGrown,” Summers said, describing her own love for nature, which she hopes to share with her customers through both the Coffee Strolls and Synergy’s “trail boxes.”

And when the studio isn’t being used for yoga, it will be a screen-free mediation space.

“It’s a lunch box with everything you need for a day hike,” she explained. Adding, “We’re also right near the park.” So, the trail boxes could be ideal for picnics as well.

“I want to specialize in neurodivergence,” Summers said, and to offer a space that welcomes everyone including families with young children – which is where the Play Café at the front of the building comes in.

Nearing the end of the necessary renovations when she spoke with Our Town, Summers is getting excited to finally share the many facets of Synergy with the community.

Designed for toddler and preschool-aged children, the Play Café is stocked with food-themed imaginative play items that will keep kids busy while their parents indulge in something from the menu, which will include coffee, soups, sandwiches, pastries and kids’ snacks.

River trust acquires new parcel

The Ookow Preserve is named after a native flower that grows there

Williams said he first spotted the flower on the site in late May.

The Willamette River Trust has added another parcel to its stock of land. The trust has taken possession of an 80-acre site in Yamhill County that was donated to the Scotts Mills-based trust.

This is the fifth parcel to come under supervision of the trust, which has been operating for less than two years. The tract is in the Coast Range foothills between Yamhill and Gaston.

“The property had been logged decades back, and then was planned for a vineyard at one point,” said Travis Williams, executive director of the trust.

“Today the property has some invasive plants and weeds to contend with, which the trust will work on. That said, it also has some great natural aspects to work with as well, from the forested area, the creek, and some springs on the property.”

The parcel also contains a native purple wildflower called the ookow, and Williams has named the property the Ookow Preserve in its honor.

“We will likely aim for the spring with this one,” Williams said. “We need a bit of time to develop a trail there given the property has a nice slope and forested area as opposed to our rather flat wet-prairie properties. We will be building out the trail over the next few months, which is something that we love to do, while keeping the impact to a minimum.”

Freedom of speech for all

My diverse Silverton family

I’ve been thinking lately about what it really means to support freedom of speech.

Yesterday, while I was driving, I heard the song We Are Family performed by the group Sister Sledge in 1979. My first thought was of my immediate family and then my extended family throughout the states. I then started to consider that my friends here in Silverton were also my family; I certainly see them more often than many of my relatives and I must admit their company is preferable to many in my immediate family tree.

It’s easy to support someone’s right to speak when we agree with them. The test comes when we don’t.

And freedom of speech is also, at its heart, freedom of thought. It means allowing people the space to question, to wrestle with ideas, to form their own beliefs and sometimes to reach conclusions very different from our own. We don’t have to approve of those conclusions to respect another person’s right to arrive at them.

I read things in Our Town that I agree with, things that challenge me, and occasionally things that make me shake my head. That’s OK. I don’t believe my discomfort with someone’s opinion gives me the right to decide that the opinion shouldn’t be expressed.

People are also free to respond. They can write a letter, challenge an argument, disagree publicly, or simply turn the page.

That, too, is freedom of speech.

What concerns me is the growing tendency to treat disagreement as something that needs to be eliminated rather than engaged. Even more concerning is how easily disagreement can become dehumanization – when we stop seeing a person and instead see a label, a political affiliation, a religion, or simply “the other side.”

I don’t need to agree with someone to defend their right to speak. And defending that right doesn’t mean OR CCB #67422

endorsing what they say.

In a community like Silverton, we are going to encounter people with very different political beliefs, religious beliefs, values and experiences. I think that’s healthy. We should be able to disagree – even strongly – without trying to silence one another or reducing another human being to the opinion we dislike most about them.

So whether I agree with the person writing the advertisement, the person writing the letter criticizing it, both of them, or neither of them, my position is the same: Let them speak. Let them think. Then let the rest of us think for ourselves.

And perhaps we can do something more difficult than simply talking past one another: we can learn how to talk with one another.

We are planning a Braver Angels event in Silverton in the near future. Braver Angels is a national organization that brings people with differing political views together for respectful conversation – not to make us agree, but to help us disagree without treating one another as enemies.

Please stay tuned for details. I hope it gives us another opportunity to listen, speak honestly, and remember that the person across the table is still our neighbor.

My Silverton family is diverse: There is my Russian neighbor, the Guatemalan gardener, the Hungarian carpenter, and the Jewish Buddhist.

I see them at the Grange meetings and the city council meetings. I see them in the park enjoying Music Mondays and at the Monday peace vigils.

I encounter them dropping off homegrown vegetables at SACA, at the Friday “Stand for Democracy” rallies, at get-out-the-vote events and knocking on doors for candidates.

They volunteer at Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, the Oregon Garden, and wildlife

conservation projects.

We share time at the book club or the poetry group. We share time walking under the white peace dove alongside PFLAG in the Homer Davenport Days parade. We do the shopping or picking up prescriptions for those too afraid to leave their homes.

My Silverton family supports 100 People Who Care. We support the library, community theater, Sheltering Silverton, and bond measures to fix our crumbling schools.

My family is diverse, equitable and inclusive: Diverse - having a range of different peoples, things or ideas in a group Equitable - fair, just and reasonable for everyone involved Inclusive - no one left behind As Nick Lowe wrote in his song, “What’s so funny ‘bout peace, love and understanding.”

Dutch Henry Nelson Dec. 11, 1958 – Aug. 16, 2026 Dutch was born in Tacoma, Washington, on Dec. 11, 1958. He enjoyed collecting rocks, walking through the woods, and his beloved Westerns, so it’s appropriate that he passed away at high noon on Aug. 16.

When he was younger, Dutch and his brother Dave would ride the freight trains along the PNW down to Sacramento, California, and all the way to Tulsa, Oklahoma. They were proud to be train tramps.

Dutch and Terri Rockett were married for 35 years and Terri says they fell more in love with each other every day. Dutch is survived by his brothers, Darrell and Dan; his son, Jessey; and three grandchildren, Jeston, Jasper and Ellie.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11:30 a.m. at Coolidge McClaine Park in Silverton.

Potluck. Anyone who knew Dutch is invited to celebrate.

Randall Dale Key July 26, 1959 – Aug. 17, 2026 Randall Dale Key was born in Stayton, Oregon, to Dale and Veryl Key on July 26, 1959. He passed away Aug. 17 from complications of lifetime chronic kidney disease.

Randy attended Kennedy High School in Mount Angel, Oregon, where he excelled at football, track, and basketball. He made lifelong friends with whom he enjoyed many days of fishing and hunting.

His favorite time of year was fall when he went to the Elk Woods in Joseph with his best friend Greg and the crew. They would always head into town on Saturday game day to watch their beloved Ducks. Randy was the biggest Ducks fan around and made sure everyone knew it.

Randy happiest time were the years he lived in Alaska. He had many great fish stories to tell.

He loved his boys fiercely and spent many hours teaching them to fish and coaching Ben in baseball and football. Randy was also very proud of his 27 years and 11 months of sobriety.

Randy married Karri in Skagway, Alaska.

He is survived by Karri and his sons Ben, Jake, and James, as well as eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, younger brother Roddy, and beloved uncle Bob Suseé.

A celebration of life is being planned for fall. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel.

Randall Portner May 15, 1954 – July 31, 2026 Born in White Salmon, Washington, Randall (Randy) Portner grew up in nearby Trout Lake with his parents, Albert and Viola, and five siblings, all of whom preceded him in death.

A master machinist, Randy said he could make anything except a straight stick with one end.

Nicknamed John Henry because he could outproduce computer machines, he also had some unfortunate incidents with hammers. He made the giant pulleys that let ships go under the Hawthorne Bridge in Portland. His little stick man symbol is stamped on parts of oil rigs all over the world.

Randy lived most of his life in the hills above Scotts Mills with his wife, Cassandra (Casle), and his boys, Simon and Ian. He was a great dad, coaching baseball and taking the kids hiking in the wilderness,. He found a happy life in the hills, hunting, fishing, gathering mushrooms and huckleberries and disparaging flatlanders. His greatest joy in the last few years was spending time with his grandson, Jafar, fishing and hunting mushrooms.

A celebration of life was held on Aug. 29 at Scotts Mills City Park. Please honor Randy with a donation to The Willamette River Preservation Trust.

Football preview Kennedy standout linemen critical in 2026 campaign Kennedy High of Mount Angel will depend on its veteran linemen as the Trojans look to make another deep playoff run this season.

JFK was 7-3 a year ago and second in Class 3A’s Special District I. The Trojans advanced to the 3A quarterfinals before falling to league rival Banks.

Kennedy has made the playoffs in every season of veteran coach Joe Panuke’s 13 years in charge of the program, including a 2A title in 2018, three 2A runner-up finishes and a 3A second place.

“Our goal every year is to try to win our league,” Panuke told Our Town. “That will get us into the playoffs and we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Panuke has his entire offensive line returning, including seniors Creo Walker and Jayce Hansen and juniors Sam Astorga, Kole Graves and Allister Moore.

“There aren’t a lot of teams out there who return their entire offensive line,” Panuke said. “We expect our line to dominate.”

Berning, a versatile sophomore, turned heads during Kennedy’s 2A championship baseball run with his slick fielding at second base. He also will man one of the linebacker positions.

Sophomore Izzy Vaquera also will be part of the offensive line mix and along with the starting five will man the three defensive line spots as well. Panuke plans to rotate the six players to keep everyone fresh.

“Our offensive line and defensive line definitely will be a strength,” he said.

Panuke lost son/quarterback Brody Panuke and versatile runner/receiver Colby Rich to graduation, but Kennedy offers solid offensive weaponry. Power runner Jaden Traeger is back, along with wideout Stephen Handren. Traeger also will see time as quarterback, usually in a wildcat set.

Junior Kyle Munro and freshman Blake Panuke, Joe’s other son, also will be part of the quarterback mix. Sophomore Quinton Bruner will assume Rich’s slot receiver spot,

“He will do everything you ask him to do,” Panuke said of Berning, who will team up with Traeger to anchor the middle of the defense for Kennedy.

The schedule is a challenging one. The Trojans have moved to Special District II, joining Blanchet Catholic, Gervais, Harrisburg, Newport, Salem Academy and Scio. Panuke thinks both Gervais and Scio will be tough opponents, and the nonleague schedule includes Special District I powers Santiam Christian (two titles in six finals appearances) and Dayton (seven titles in nine finals berths). SC has a new coach, Tim Euhus, the former Oregon State and NFL tight end who now works as a financial adviser in Corvallis.

Kennedy opens Friday, Sept. 4, at Randy Traeger Memorial Field against SC, with

Dayton coming to Kennedy on Oct. 23.

The Trojans visit Scio on Oct. 9 and host Gervais on the final day of the regular season on Oct. 30.

Mannion publishes a monthly newsletter, hosts a January coaches clinic and also offers his services to coaches who are looking for help in terms of video analysis or to watch practice. Two Mt. Angel teams win state JBO titles Mt. Angel continues to turn in impressive performances in youth baseball. Two Trojans squads took home Junior Baseball Organization state titles in July, bringing to at least four the number of Mt. Angel state titles in recent years.

The Minor American team, coached by Derek Barth, won its state title during a tournament at Brown Park in Gaston on July 17-19. The Senior American squad, coached by Adam Banducci, captured its division the same weekend at Hare Field in Hillsboro. Both won county competitions to get to state.

Barth’s Minor American squad proved tough in the clutch throughout, winning its semifinal contest against Gladstone by a 10-9 count and edging Tualatin by the same 10-9 score in the championship game.

“Going into the season,” Barth said, “I was not sure how things would end up, but as the season progressed I could see how much fight our team had in them.

We didn’t have the most skilled players, but what we did have was a lot of guts and a no-quit attitude.“ Barth’s squad opened with a 15-5 win against Liberty and downed Newport 13-9 before their nailbiters in the

“The team gave it their all every single game we played, and with the exception of the first game, we played from behind the entire tournament,” he said. “Every single player on our team contributed something to each win – hit by pitches, sac flies, sac bunts. They flat out played their butts off and earned first place.”

A Grin at the End

A flight to remember Some years ago, my wife and I found ourselves in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, and needed to hitch a ride back to Juneau, Alaska, where we lived. We had run in the Klondike Trail of ’98 relay race, which covered 109 miles between Skagway, Alaska, and Whitehorse by way of the White Pass. It connects the Alaska coast with Canada by way of a route that only a mountain goat could love.

The annual race could best be compared to Oregon’s Hood to Coast relay, but steeper.

Transported back in time

What was most interesting was how we got back to Juneau. We rode on a DC-3.

An airline called Air North operated the World War II-era airplane.

What brings this to mind is a visit I made the other day to the Commemorative Air Force outpost in San Marcos, Texas.

These folks – many of them veterans – buy and restore World War II vintage aircraft. Because all of their 180 planes are airworthy, they call their collection a “flying museum.” Though they are based in Dallas, there are 80 affiliated outfits around the nation and in the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland.

For those who have been spared the “airplane nut” virus that has long infected me, it was just another old plane. For me, it was a chance to experience firsthand a plane that helped win World War II.

But one stood out – a C-47, whose civilian designation was DC-3. Though it was like the plane my wife and I had flown in decades ago, this one was different.

On D-Day – June 6, 1944 – this plane had led the convoy of 800 planes that crossed the English Channel to deliver 13,000 paratroops behind the Nazi lines.

They were among the 160,000 U.S., British, Canadian and Allied troops who would join the high-stakes invasion and ultimately turn the tide of the war.

With nose art that said only “That’s All, Brother” – a note for Germany’s leader – and the special paint job that marked Allied planes that took part in the invasion, this C-47 looked the same as it did that day in June 82 years ago.
