Legal Matters Felony charges filed for restaurant theft A former employee of a Silverton restaurant is facing felony charges after allegedly stealing $5,000 from his ex-employer.

Cory Matthew Montana, 32, of Silverton, was charged Dec. 3 in Marion County Circuit Court for allegedly taking the cash from High Water Grill on Nov. 3.

A statement from the Silverton Police Department said the theft was captured on camera and the suspect was identified by his face and “very distinctive shoes.”

Civics 101 When contacted by police Reyna-Gutierrez allegedly fled in a vehicle, and while being pursued allegedly struck two parked cars.

He is charged with delivery of methamphetamine, delivery of a Schedule I controlled substance, felon in possession of a firearm, attempt to elude a police officer, and two counts of failure to perform duties of a driver. If convicted he faces up to 10 years in prison on the highest count.

In a separate case Reyna-Gutierrez is charged with first-degree theft for allegedly shoplifting more than $1,000 in merchandise from a local Lowe’s in October.

Montana is charged with first-degree theft and second-degree burglary, both class C felonies punishable by up to five years in prison. Montana was originally arrested for possession of cocaine as well but prosecutors did not file this charge.

As of press deadline he remained held in the Marion County Jail on $110,000 bail.

Montana was booked and released from the Marion County Jail with orders to have no contact with the business.

A Silverton-area woman is facing a misdemeanor weapons charge after allegedly threatening a man with a knife in December.

Alleged drug sales lead to police chase, arrest

A Silverton man is facing numerous charges after allegedly being caught selling meth and fentanyl, then fleeing from police.

Francisco Javier Reyna-Gutierrez, 34, was charged Dec. 8 in Marion County Circuit Court with numerous counts following his arrest Dec. 6 by the Salem Police Department.

According to charging documents, ReynaGutierrez was allegedly in possession of more than 10 grams of methamphetamine and 5 grams of fentanyl. He also allegedly possessed more than $300 in cash and a firearm, which he was not allowed to possess due to a 2024 conviction for vehicle theft.

Woman charged with threatening with a knife

Regan Lynn Schultz, 51, was charged Dec. 2 in Marion County Circuit Court with unlawful use of a weapon for an incident the day before on Lewis Cemetery Road, south of Silverton.

Charging documents allege Schultz possessed a knife “with intent to [it] use unlawfully” against the alleged victim.

When police responded Schultz was given a court date and ordered to have no contact with the victim. She allegedly returned to the residence in question and was taken into custody, and on Dec. 16 was charged with contempt of court.

If convicted as charged Schultz faces up to a year in jail.

New parking lot for Silverton library

Crews have finished work on a $52,450 paving project on the parking lot just north of the Silver Falls Public Library.

The library has been working with city officials in recent months on a bit of a land swap. The work was required because the original 18-acre parcel that included the old City Hall, the library, the swimming pool, Old Mill Park and Coolidge McClaine Park was unwieldy and needed to be partitioned.

Once all the title papers are signed and delivered the library district will own its building and the newly paved parking lot, with city funds paying for the paving. In addition, the city will take ownership of the parking lot across South Water Street adjacent to the Silverton Community Center.

Previously, it was jointly owned by the city and the library district.

by K&L Industries of Canby, with

Christy Davis, the library’s director, noting that the work included “some grading, new asphalt, curbs, striping directional pain, and additionally, parking lot lighting and signage.”

Library officials also are hoping to attach solar panels to the library roof, but will need additional grant funding to move forward with the project, Davis said. The library already has received a $44,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Energy to give the project a planning kick-start.

Still to be resolved is the status of the parcel that includes old City Hall, the Fischer Building and the parking lot adjacent to those structures. The library parking lot essentially extends from the library building to the northern edge of the Fischer Building.

City officials are hoping to draw interest from a boutique hotel operator for the City Hall/Fischer slot, but no deal has been announced.

Ice challenges

By James Day Silverton sought legal advice from its city attorney on how to deal with possible federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations after the topic sparked an emotional debate at the Dec. 3 City Council meeting.

At the Dec. 17 session it was announced that Silverton Police Department officers have been advised to turn off their body cameras if they happen upon or are called to an ICE enforcement.

“This guidance,” city officials said in an email exchange with Our Town, “reflects current federal enforcement actions related to interference during ICE operations when recording occurs.”

The legal advice did not make councilors or stakeholders participating in the meeting very happy. Councilor Eric Hammond referred to the situation as “federal tyranny.”

hand in a free-speech capacity at an ICE enforcement.

Laurie Chadwick scolded the city for using its body cameras for other incidents but not for ICE calls.

Terry McLoughlin, speaking via Zoom, said that the Silverton Police should require ICE officers to show badges and a judicial warrant “to avoid vigilantism.”

City officials in Salem, Woodburn and Hillsboro have declared states of emergency because of ICE enforcements. Mayor Jason Freilinger and the Silverton councilors seemed to oppose such an action for now.

McLoughlin related a story about a Silverton High student who chose not to attend the Nov. 28 state championship football game in Hillsboro because of concerns about ICE. In other action Power outage: Coolidge McClaine Park will be closed until further notice because of damage from the late December storms.

Silverton Reservoir, which had been closed because of storm debris, has reopened.

Community survey: The city is conducting a community survey, its first broad review of resident attitudes since 2016. Go to https://www.silverton.or.us/community/ page/community-surveys to participate. The deadline is Jan. 12. This survey is open to all residents, business owners and residents inside the Silver Falls School District boundary.

Affordable housing: Councilors voted unanimously to extend through the end of 2026 a memorandum of agreement with Hacienda Community Development, which is scheduled to build a 50-unit affordable housing complex on Westfield Street behind the Silverton 50+ Center. The project is on hold because the city needs to arrange for the sewer and water pipes and other infrastructure to connect the new development to current city utilities.

The city has received a $95,000 grant from Business Oregon to pay for survey and design work, but officials said a grant of at least $1 million will be needed to connect the Hacienda project to the city services.

Water master plan: Public Works

operations manager Mike Dahlberg briefed the council on efforts to update the city’s water master plan. A plan must be in place for the city to become eligible to receive state assistance for its water treatment plant replacement project. City Manager Cory Misley said the goal is to receive an appropriation during the 2027 legislative session. It is estimated the water treatment project will cost upwards of $20 million.

The city has $8 million in hand.

Transit: Councilors heard a report from two consultants on possible expansion of transit service in town. The city currently spends about $205,000 per year on the Silver Trolley dial-a-ride service and the 20X Cherriots bus. Key expansion goals include expanding the trolley to two vehicles as well as adding night and weekend service. The city would need to receive grants or find funding to begin the projected $410,000 annual price tag for upgraded service.

Urban forestry: Councilors voted unanimously to approve a $70,000 contract for urban forestry services with Laurelin Tree Consulting.

New bond SFSD eyeing facility needs

By Stephen Floyd The Silver Falls School District (SFSD) is pursuing a possible facilities bond for the November 2026 or May 2027 elections, with a building analysis and community meetings forthcoming.

During the Dec. 8 meeting of the SFSD Board, officials received a proposal from consulting firm BRIC Architecture regarding a Long Range Facility Plan to identify and prioritize building needs.

The same firm assisted the Mt. Angel School District is developing a successful bond proposal in 2024.

The process will involve in-depth building assessments by BRIC, including an analysis of how much an improvement may cost versus the value it would add to a building.

Superintendent Kim Kellison told the board she has asked BRIC to be especially thorough due to the age of buildings.

The district will also form a committee of citizens and district officials to help lead stakeholder listening sessions, expected to take place in January and February of 2026.

The committee will meet with BRIC for detailed breakdowns of the firm’s analyses, and will generate a recommendation for a possible bond.

Kellison said one strategy being considered is to propose a bond that would replace an existing bond expiring in July of 2027.

That one was passed in 2006 to complete

Phase II of Silverton High School. She said such a proposal would keep property taxes the same rather than asking voters for an increase.

The estimated cost of BRIC’s services is between $85,000 and $100,000, said Kellison. She said the amount reflects the added attention to detail the district has requested to make sure potential problems at the aging buildings are not overlooked.

In addition to informing bond efforts, a Long Range Facility Plan will allow the district to apply for a grant from the Oregon School Capital Improvement Matching Program.

Kellison said the district may qualify for as much as a $10 million grant, based on funds available and the pool of likely applicants.

SFSD previously proposed a facility bond in 2023 for $138 million that was rejected by 55.8% of voters. The bond would have addressed deferred maintenance at all district buildings and funded a new Silverton Middle School.

Opponents of the 2023 bond expressed concerns over a perceived lack of transparency from the district, as well as whether the price tag reflected actual building needs and solutions. Kellison said she is working to rebuild trust among these community members.

“I’m trying to really take good care of district resources,” she said.

SFSD Board switching up meeting locations Starting in January, the Silver Falls School District Board will hold some regular meetings at area schools in an effort to engage more directly with residents and employees.

Meetings are scheduled for Jan. 26 at Robert Frost, Feb. 23 at Mark Twain and March 9 at Silverton Middle School.

Superintendent Kim Kellison told the board Dec. 8 the goal is to allow board members to tour the buildings and hear directly from staff members about the highlights of their school.

The board will also seek input from community members including those who may not otherwise be able to attend the regular meetings at Silverton High School.

This comes as the district is exploring a possible facilities bond in the near future. Consultants are currently evaluating the needs of each building in the district, and the district plans to form an advisory committee that will help lead community meetings.

The board’s meetings will be separate from the community meetings and will double both as regular business gatherings and a “building showcase,” said Kellison.

She said the upcoming meetings could be an opportunity for greater community input.

“It’s great to have people chime in and attend,” she said.

Wicks also will be playing pieces by other prolific composers, including Bach, Schubert and Telemann, who has more than 3,000 compositions to his credit.

In addition, Wicks will play a movement from a piano sonata by Florence Price, an AfricanAmerican composer (1887-1953) with more than 420 works to her credit.

“The concert portion will be fairly brief,” Wicks told Our Town, “and followed by a reception. My goal is to present a wide sampling of brief works by very prolific composers.”

The January show will be part of a busy season for Wicks, who will be showcasing his works at a series of mid-valley concerts. Free-will offerings will be accepted at all.

A ‘baaaad’ break Injury puts Silver Creek Lambscapes in jeopardy

Or she did, until her accident.

When Mary Jo Haslem – owner of Haslem Sheep in Battleground, Washington – learned her good friend, Maria Rooney – proprietor of Silver Creek Lambscapes in Silverton – had been seriously injured while attending the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky, she was worried.

“Because she can’t do her chores, she’s hired two people to help her. One of them is one of her [foster] kids that’s grown now,” Haslem said. “Because it takes two people to do what she does.”

“She’s really savvy around sheep, but it happened so quick she couldn’t get away…” Haslem said. “She was in a pen with some rams, and a ram hit her and… it broke her femur. She had almost a four-hour surgery.”

Lucky to be in a location with a premier orthopedic surgeon and in otherwise good health, Rooney was eventually able to return home with strict instructions to stay off her feet for at least six weeks.

“She’s a busy bee and it’s probably driving her insane to not be doing anything,” Haslem said. “But they told her if she messes that up it would be bad. So, that’s what’s worrying me – she’s going to drive herself crazy.”

But that’s not the only thing concerning her. She is also worried for Rooney’s sheep who – especially during the winter months leading up to lambing season – require a lot of care.

It’s going to take an estimated $10,000 to get Rooney healed and her sheep safely through the next few months. That’s money she simply doesn’t have.

“Her sheep are basically her life…” Haslem pointed out.

“She has raised some really good animals. They’ve sold all over the country. They’ve won really big shows.”

And it hasn’t been easy.

“She’s had a tough road,” Haslem confirmed. “She raises commercial sheep, and that’s a man’s world, but she’s managed to survive it and be successful. She’s not wealthy by any means – no one who raises livestock is… and everyone is worried about being around next year with the economy, the livestock industry is not in good shape – but she does it.”

Because the word Haslem most commonly uses to describe her friend is private, and asking for help, especially from the community at large does not come easily to her.

“She just does her sheep,” Haslem said. “That’s her life.… She loves her animals.”

Living Life One Week At A Time

kind of light. And it was created on the very first Sunday morning in history.

nce again, the New Year has arrived and many of us will once again be making New Year’s resolutions. This is when we resolve to improve our behavior in some way by setting goals for the coming year.

According to Social Scientists who study such things, the most common resolutions include losing weight by exercising more and eating healthier. Others aim to save money, or quit smoking. All of these are very good goals.

But Dr. Asim Shah, professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Services at Baylor College of Medicine told us (Jan. 11, 2024) “Studies show that 88 percent of people who set New Year resolutions fail them within the first two weeks.” That leaves only 12% who succeed.

That’s not good. Are we stuck with these poor results, or is there a better way?

Fortunately for us, there is.

Welcome to Weekly Resolutions Back in 1998 I developed a paper-based time management system called The Noble Planner. It was very successful, but the digital revolution disrupted the industry. Regardless, the ideas in my system worked really well, and most of its principles can be applied easily today using a smart phone. Two of the ideas were derived from the Creation Story found in Genesis 1-2. They combine to offer a better way to make ourselves do the things we need to do. Instead of making New Years resolutions, we can instead make Weekly resolutions. Here are the Bible passages: “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.” — Gen. 1:3 That first day of the Creation week was a Sunday. Then, jumping to the end of the chapter and the first few verses of the second chapter we read; “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. — Gen. 1:31-2:3 The point I want you to see in these two passages of the Bible is the way God started and ended the first week in history. He began with illumination on that first Sunday, and then

It’s interesting to see what else God initiated on a Sunday morning. Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday morning (Luke 24:1). The Holy Spirit fell upon the fledgling church on the day of Pentecost, which was 50 days from the Passover Sabbath (Acts 2:1-4). That places it smack dab on another Sunday morning as well. Is God telling us something?

Maybe God is showing us by His own example, as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, that Sunday, the Lord’s Day, is a very special day. It should be the springboard of every week— a day of illumination, redemption, and spiritual empowerment that lifts us up out of our circumstances long enough to see where we are, from a higher and better perspective.

will work far better than those new year’s resolutions that only 12% of folks succeed in accomplishing.”

We have the rotation of the Earth on its axis to mark the 24-hour day. We have the phases of the Moon to mark the general length of a lunar month. We have the orbit of the earth around the Sun to mark the 365.25 days of the solar year. But where does the 7day week come from? It only exists in the mind of God. Whether anyone believes in God or not, that’s where it began.

Now the 7-day week just happens to be the ideal unit of time for living a balanced and productive life. Why is that? Because a day is too short to adequately address every important area and relationship in life. The month is too long to plan effectively because too many things change by the end of a month. But the 7-day week is perfect. It offers us all the time we need.We can balance the entire week by focusing each day, just as God did, on just one or two areas of concern. It provides us with the wisest of all routines.

What’s So Special About Sunday?

There is something else to be gained here.

God began the Creation Week with illumination. He said “Let there be light” and there was light. But it wasn’t the illumination of the Sun. The Sun doesn’t show up until Wednesday! No, this light was some other

there we can best renew our weekly resolutions, set better goals and make better plans with regard for our marriage, family, household, livelihood, church and civic responsibilities, scheduling for each an appropriate amount of time in the coming week. And then, at the beginning of each new week, we can plan once again with the amazing lift that comes from using Sunday as our weekly springboard.

How Does This Work in Practice?

First, if this weekly routine is as good as it seems, then it makes sense to plan each new week in the “afterglow” of Sunday worship services at our local church. Sunday church attendance will lift you up to that higher place.

Then, on Sunday afternoon or evening, get away by yourself, or with your spouse, to plan your new week. Make your New Week’s Resolutions once again. Write down what you believe to be the will of God in a place where you will be sure to see it in time to take obedient action. Then leap up off the end of the springboard and dive boldly into Monday.

These “new week’s resolutions” will work far better than those new year’s resolutions that only 12% of folks succeed in accomplishing.

Rather than wait for another new year to come around, renew your resolutions every Sunday. If you fall off the horse one week, just climb back on and ride it for another week.

You get 52 tries at keeping your resolutions.

Jesus Offers More Than This.

This approach to weekly planning was inspired by my study of the Bible. It is part of my attempt to develop what I call a “practical theology,” where we get to put God’s way of doing things into practice in our own lives.

It would be a shame for anyone to enjoy the benefit of these secondary insights while missing out on the far more important truth concerning how we can be saved from the punishment our rebellion against God deserves.Through His life, death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus Christ has paid for the sins of those who put their trust in Him. This allows for all our sins to actually be forgiven.

Don’t miss out on this. Turn your life over to the only One who can save you. Repent. Stop doing what you know is wrong. Turn to Jesus by faith. You will be so glad you did. Then, walk in all the light that God provides as you study your Bible and seek to obey God’s commands. Be the Christian that everyone ought to be… and do it one week at a time!

Sharing the experience Cancer support group forms in Silverton

When Kimberly Myrene began seeing doctors in July 2021 complaining of extreme weight loss, lethargy and pain, they were stumped.

Silverton 50+ Center 115 Westfield St. Second and fourth Thursday of the month, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“It was completely stressful because they would say, ‘It’s not that…’” Myrene recalled.

This method of ruling things out went on for the next two years until doctors finally established Myrene was suffering from Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disorder, Lupus Nephritis Stage 5, Fibromyalgia and finally, in April 2023, Rosai Dorman’s Disease – a type of blood cancer primarily affecting the lymph nodes.

“I went from active to inactive,” Myrene recalls.

She also began treatment, first with high doses of prednisone then, when her symptoms became too much, chemotherapy.

And that’s when she realized – despite the unwavering support of her husband, Eric – she needed the support of others who had been through this kind of treatment before.

“I met a woman in the chemo room, she was the catalyst,” Myrene said, recalling a conversation that began with Myrene bemoaning a recent experience she’d had in the emergency room and ended with the woman talking her through the pros and cons of getting a chemo port.

And not just about the difficulties a cancer diagnosis brings, but about triumphs as well.

“In the support group we have a jar of grateful,” Myrene said, describing the practice as one she established early in her own treatment.

“She was determined, not only to get help for herself but others going through it,” Driskill said.

“There’s always a box of tissues at the meeting… but every session there’s going to be some laughter, too.”

“The first year I did it with my husband,” she said. “It was good for him to see what I was grateful for.… Because sometimes we have to be grateful for the little things.”

So, starting in January 2025, although Myrene was still struggling with a lack of energy and persistent symptoms, she and Driskill began holding a Cancer Support Group once a month at the Silverton 50+ Center.

And a deep sense of understanding.

“It started out me and Lilly,” Myrene recalled. “But now it’s about six people.”

That includes Dale Coleman who, in February 2025, was diagnosed with stage one pancreatic cancer.

Then she remembered Lilly Driskill, a coworker from her time spent teaching at Abiqua Academy in Salem who, as luck would have it, also lived in Silverton.

“I told her, I have cancer,” Myrene recalled.

“And she said, ‘I’m a cancer survivor.’”

Driskill also knew how essential a good support network is to those navigating a cancer diagnosis, so the two women decided to start a support group of their own.

“The friends and family support has been outrageous…” he said. “But if you don’t have somebody… you need somebody.”

“I’ll mention something… and I’ll say, ‘Does anybody…?’ and they’ll say, ‘Me too!’”

Kathie Lynn Roberts June 30, 1942 – Dec. 8, 2025 On Dec. 8, Kathie Lynn Roberts, wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, great-greatgrandmother, and matriarch, passed away peacefully in her home in Silverton, Oregon, surrounded by some of her immediate family.

She was born in Los Angeles, California, raised in Sparks, Nevada, and lived in Fremont, California. Kathie owned and operated the fruit stand in Niles Canyon, California, with her husband Jerry.

They moved to Silverton in 1988 where

they started and operated the Silverton Package Depot. She lived life to the fullest and created a legacy of memories that will affect those who knew her for years to come.

She is survived by her husband Jerry Roberts; brother William Clark; sons John Elliott, Michael Elliott and daughter Deborah Ferris. She was preceded in death by her son, Jimmie Elliott. Kathie had 28 grand children, 34 great-grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren. Her love and dedication to creating great memories of her family will be cherished and lived forever.

“With deep love and heavy hearts” the family of Marley Edward Elling announce his passing on Nov. 18, 2025, due to medical complications.

Marley was born on Aug. 25, 1937, and for more than 70 years he called Silverton, Oregon, home. His roots ran deep, and his presence touched family, friends, and neighbors across generations.

Harold Johnson was born on June 23, 1942, in White Lake, South Dakota, to Claude Wesley Johnson and Vadia Mae Johnson. He was welcomed into a large and lively family of 17 children. In 1952, at just nine years old, Harold and his family made the long journey west, settling in Oregon. He attended grade school in Sublimity and later went to Stayton Union High School.

Marley served honorably in the National Guard, demonstrating dedication, discipline, and pride in his country.

That same strength of character carried into every chapter of his life through fatherhood, friendships, and the quiet yet meaningful way he supported and cared for the people around him.

Marley was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who led with quiet strength, kindness, and unwavering loyalty to the people he loved. His family was the center of his world, and the memories, guidance, and values he leaves behind will continue to shape the lives he

touched.

He is survived by his two children, Tony Edward Elling of Yuba City, California, and Traci Lynn Cooper of Chico, California.

Marley was also blessed with grandchildren who adored him: Justin, Jared, and Jami Lohmeier, Morgan Fernandez, Shelby Elling, and Stephanie Henson, and six great-grandchildren, who brought him endless smiles and joy.

He will be remembered for the love he gave, the stories he shared, and the quiet wisdom he passed on without ever asking for anything in return.

Services were held in December at Unger’s Funeral Home in Silverton.

Immediately after, he was be laid to rest at Valley View Cemetery.

Marley’s legacy lives on in the laughs shared, memories treasured, and lives he helped shape. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Harold began working at Norpac at the age of 16 – a job that would become a defining chapter of his life. Over an extraordinary 46-year career, he rose to the role of Shift Supervisor. He was admired not only for his work ethic but also for his sharp wit and warm humor, which had a way of lifting spirits and turning ordinary moments into memorable ones.

In 1960, Harold joined the United States Navy and was stationed aboard the USS BOYD DD-544 as a chaplain’s assistant. After completing his service, he returned home in 1963 and married Gloria Etzel in 1964. Together they shared 26 years of marriage and raised five rambunctious boys, whom they loved fiercely. During these years they also built and operated their laundry services in Stayton, Aumsville, and Mount Angel.

Harold loved the outdoors and found deep joy in elk hunting and fishing, especially when sharing those moments with his sons and his nephew, Derek Mendiola. He was always tuned in to the latest fishing reports, ready for the next good day on the water.

Harold is survived by his sons, their partners and grandchildren: Alex, Damon (Angela), Ian (Charleen), Hillary, and Ignatius (Alé); his grandchildren: Jordan, Regina, Cooper, Kyle, Braxton, Bailey, Michael, Macy, and Norah.

In 1997, Harold married Janice Staiger, who preceded him in death in 2012. His years with Janice brought an expanded circle of family whom he embraced wholeheartedly.

He formed strong and lasting bonds with her grandchildren, Brittney and Chris Black, and Brittney’s children – Charlee, Maverick, and the twins Oliver, and Everlee – who brought him tremendous joy and a renewed sense of purpose in his later years. He also cherished his relationships with Janice’s other grandchildren Brandon, Brianna, and Bridget, whom he loved deeply and remained an important part of his life.

Harold’s story is one of humour, hard work, and love. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the children, grandchildren, family, and friends who carry his stories forward.

A Military Honors Service is planned for 10 a.m. on Feb. 8, 2026, at Valley View Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Mt. Angel Festhalle. The family welcomes all who wish to remember Harold. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel.

Silverton girls look for return to state tourney

The Silverton girls basketball team has finished fourth, first and third in Class 5A in its first three years under coach Alyssa Ogle.

Ogle returns a strong group of veteran players from a team that was 25-4 a year ago and 16-2 in the Mid-Willamette Conference. The Foxes reeled in a couple of transfers and have some promising freshmen to throw into the mix. Add it all up and you get a program that seems a strong contender to return to the state tournament at Linfield University in March.

“Our kids have goals and we will do the best we can to continue that success for these kids,” Ogle told Our Town. “Of course we want that to include the state tournament, but we know we have to work for that. We are never satisfied.”

Two multiyear starters return, senior Allie Mansur and junior Marley Wertz. They are both high-energy contributors at both ends of the floor.

“We rely on them defensively as they are getting two of the best matchups every

The transfers are junior Karlee Martirano from West Albany and Bela Carrasquillo from Woodburn. Martirano was a starter on the West team that lost to Silverton 63-58 in last year’s 5A quarterfinals and “is taking on a big role for this program,” Ogle said.

“She is a great basketball player that can score the basketball from all over the court.

Leading the way are returning starters Luke Horner and Sam Haugen. Morgan said point guard Horner “gives us a lot of calmness and confidence at the position.

The Foxes were 2-2 at presstime, but the losses were close ones to No. 2 Springfield and No. 6 Redmond, both state tournament participants a year ago. Ogle’s squad also must run that gauntlet of the MidWillamette Conference, which sent three teams – West Albany, South Albany and Silverton – to Linfield last year.

“Toughest league in the state, no doubt,” Ogle said. “We get the opportunity to compete at a high level each day of conference play.”

About Haugen, Morgan noted that “Sam is a versatile, athletic wing that can play some post as well. He is a well-balanced player who will bring some great senior leadership.”

Horner is one of eight Foxes who transitioned to hoops after leading Silverton to the Class 5A football title.

The championship game came 11 days after basketball practice began and Morgan said, “understandably, players came in with some bumps and bruises from an extended football season and we are doing our best at getting healthy while getting into basketball shape.”

Also on board after football are Sutton Kuenzi, Mark Bailey, Chase Dominguez, Levi Schurter, Rysen Brister, Caden Druliner and Lincoln Teeney. The Foxes won’t see Teeney for a while because of a broken foot he incurred while practicing for the football semifinals.

Woodburn and West Albany shared the Mid-Willamette title a year ago at 15-3, with the Foxes fifth (11-7). Silverton was 1-1 this season at presstime. Morgan thinks Central, Lebanon and Corvallis will be in the mix this season while noting “we have had a lot of parity in the top half of our league, and I don’t think this year will be different. Whether we are the most talented team in the state or not, our goal is to make the playoffs while playing our best basketball of the year, going into postseason play.”

New Year’s resolutions

Huffing and puffing into 2026

It’s another brand, spanking new year. It’s a blank slate, a whole new ballgame, a time to turn the page.

my speed. I also jogged for years. I was one of those guys they timed with a calendar. I’m also uncoordinated. I can’t even walk straight. I’d probably flunk a field sobriety test even if I was drinking soda pop.

Pick your cliché.

In reality, what a new calendar offers is limitless.

Individually, everyone can do anything he, or she, wants.

Combined with quadruple bypass surgery a couple of years ago, all of this was working against me.

Together, the possibilities are even more enticing. It’s up to each of us to decide what to do with the 12 months that lie ahead.

I know altruism is the first thing that comes to mind.

Save the planet. Make the world a better place. Try an extra dose of kindness. Buy the world a Coke.

Who could argue with that? I doubt anyone can resist the idea of doing some good in the year 2026.

But then there’s reality. Sometimes the world doesn’t want to be made better. Try as we might, it just isn’t doable.

So here’s my suggestion. Instead of worrying about changing the world, why not change ourselves?

Take me as an example. I have lots of flaws that I would do well to address. I’d list all of them, but there isn’t enough room on this page.

By going to the gym I could gauge how far downhill I’d gone. Let me put it this way. I could walk, but that was about it. hard-headed. When I’m not being hard-headed or lazy, I’m wishy-washy. I’m apathetic about politics.

The list goes on.

In short, I could do better. If I focused on one or two or three of my flaws, I would come out ahead.

One thing I started last year was work on getting into shape. I’ve never been much of an athlete. Lately, however, things had gotten out of hand.

So I signed up at the gym. My wife started it. She signed up first and reported to me what she thought. She gave it a thumbs-up, so I joined in.

The first day at the gym, the boss tested my balance and asked a lot of questions. After that, he and the other trainers put together a game plan. The idea was to gain flexibility on the way to building strength and endurance.

That was easier said than done. They had me doing all sorts of exercises. Many involved rolling around on the floor. I’d tell you their names but I don’t know them.

I’ll never be another Arnold Schwarzenegger – that’s a given – but by spending some time at the gym I’m feeling a lot better.

Now, if I could just do something about being so darn hard-headed.
