MAFD merger Voters to decide Bond on the ballot

By Stephen Floyd A merger between the Mt. Angel Fire District (MAFD) and Monitor Fire District (MDF) has formally been put to voters after Marion County placed a measure on the Nov. 3 ballot.

During a special meeting of the Marion County Board of Commissioners on July 27, officials passed a resolution for a measure creating the Mt. Angel-Monitor Fire District.

The issue would be dependent on two related measures that would dissolve the existing agencies, and all three measures must pass to take effect.

The dissolution measures will go before voters in each respective district, and the merger measure goes before voters in both districts.

The Mt. Angel-Monitor Fire District would be formed Jan. 1, 2027, and would combine the boundaries of the old districts, as well as their current equipment and cash on hand. The new district would impose a property tax of $1.97 per $1,000 of assessed

value, compared to current rates of $1.01 per $1,000 in Mount Angel and $1.03 per $1,000 in Monitor.

John Rossi, spokesperson for MAFD, told Our Town approval of the merger would help both agencies stretch dollars further by combining resources and reducing redundancies. He said as calls for service go up and as equipment becomes more expensive the merger would help the districts spread fiscal burdens wider.

The agencies already cooperate through an intergovernmental agreement and fire officials have said a merger could happen smoothly given this working relationship.

Rossi said the agencies are not at risk of closing if the merger does not get approved.

He said the districts are being proactive and pursuing solutions for sustainability before services start to break down.

MAFD plans to hold outreach events as the election nears including an antique fire truck car show and open house on Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at district headquarters, 300 Monroe St., Mount Angel.

New levy would retain current tax rate

By Stephen Floyd The Silver Falls School District has placed an $87 million facilities bond on the Nov. 3 ballot, with a goal of performing critical repairs and upgrades throughout the district.

During the Aug. 10 regular meeting of the Board, officials voted unanimously to pass a resolution submitting a bond measure to the Marion County Clerk’s Office.

If approved, the bond would set a tax rate of $1.88 per $1,000 of assessed property value, the same as a bond expiring next year.

Passage would allow the district to receive a $10.2 million state grant, for a total of $97.2 million in project funds.

The district aims to rebuild Silverton Middle School at an estimated cost of $45 million, and construct a rural K-8 school to replace Central Howell, Pratum and Evergreen schools at an estimated cost of $35 million.

The remaining $17.2 million would be used for deferred maintenance at other schools throughout the district, including utility, security, roof and ADA upgrades.

Superintendent Kim Kellison said the overall goal is to improve learning and teaching environments by making sure buildings are safe, modernized and accessible.

“We want to provide the best education for our students possible,” said Kellison.

A $138 million bond in 2023 failed with 54.68 percent opposition. It included $75 million for a new middle school, and would

have increased taxes. At the time many voters expressed concerns that the district had not listened to community input and had not sought cheaper alternatives.

Kellison said the district has paid close attention to community input this time, including a plan to preserve as much of the existing middle school as possible and remove the portable classrooms. The 1938 wing of the middle school, which is not currently used for instruction and is considered unsafe to occupy, would not be preserved.

The current bond proposal was the result of a 32-person committee made of community members, teachers, administrators and board members that met several times in early 2026. A committee report to the board said 29 members strongly or very strongly supported the proposal, while three said they would support the bond with reservations.

Board Member Wally Lierman said Aug. 10 he was in support even though the proposal “was not a plan I would have devised.”

Lierman said he would prefer a bond that did not close down three historic schools which serve as centers of their communities and replace them with a building people will feel less ownership of. But he also said the proposal made fiscal sense and would leave the district in a stronger financial position.

“While it is not the plan I would have preferred, I support it,” said Lierman.

Silverton roundup Finance director Zaragoza finishes a 22-year mission

By James Day The city of Silverton said goodbye to long-time finance director Kathleen Zaragoza during an emotional ceremony at the Aug. 5 meeting.

$15 million construction contract. Silverton did not go to the voters for a bond because Zaragoza and a series of city managers had worked to set aside reserve funds to make the cost more manageable.

Zaragoza, who began overseeing the city’s finances on Oct. 13, 2003, retired effective Aug. 7. Her long-time deputy Sheena Pappas replaces her, effective Aug. 10.

Councilor Eric Hammond called the “leadership you demonstrated to be unparalleled. To have that kind of impact and integrity… it’s unmatched. Thank you so much.”

City Manager Cory Misley read an extensive list of accomplishments during Zaragoza’s stewardship including multiple awards from the Government Finance Officers Association.

Zaragoza, who was emotional throughout the process, was able to thank the city for “its great support” before everyone got together for a group photo.

“Kathleen has been a valued colleague, mentor and leader whose institutional knowledge, integrity and commitment to public service have shaped the city in countless ways,” Misley wrote in a staff report that accompanied the meeting packet.

In other council highlights: Election update: Mayor Freilinger and all three City Council incumbents, Hammond, April Newton and Marie Traeger, have filed papers to seek re-election in November.

The mayor serves a two-year term, while the councilors serve four-year terms. One challenger to the three incumbents has filed as well, Jenny Ohren, a social service specialist and Silverton High graduate. Ohren also ran in 2022 and finished seventh in the race that elected Traeger, Newton and Hammond. Also on the Nov. 3 ballot is a series of amendments to the Silverton city charter.

Mayor Freilinger noted Zaragoza’s work to help retire city debt in 2013, an effort he said that helped make Silverton “so much stronger financially than other communities in the state.”

Councilors were effusive in their praise.

“The 22 years,” said Mat Gaitan, “is a testament to your dedication and leadership. Other cities are constantly asking ‘how are we going to fund this.’ “ A prime example of this is the new City Hall, which had a

Street and Hobart Road. According to Sam Willits, public information officer for the Silverton Police Department, three individuals were trespassed from the area and “offered connections to available services.” The property is owned by the railroad but subject to county jurisdiction as it is outside of Silverton city limits.

Parking lot: City crews have graded and striped the small parcel north of City Hall and it is now open for public use, city officials said. The city eventually hopes to use the property to build a mobility hub, but it will serve as overflow parking for downtown until the other project moves forward.

Detroit Lake drawdown: Councilors voted 4-1 with one abstention to support Marion County in its lawsuit that opposes a federal drawdown of Detroit Lake to aid fish passage. Hammond voted no, Newton abstained and Kyle Palmer was absent. Freilinger, Sutton, Traeger and Matt Gaitan backed the resolution, although the debate that took place showed that many of the councilors wanted more information on the issue.

Silver Creek: Councilors approved spending more than $125,000 on covers for the Silver Creek intake facility to help reduce the noise that the facility has generated since being installed in April of 2024. The $5 million project helped boost the city’s water production capacity.

All that jazz Young musician shares his passion for the art at Old Mill Park

Watching Finn Yang play the piano, it’s not surprising to learn that he grew up in a house filled with music.

“It was my first experience playing with other people and it was super stressful,” Yang recalled.

“My mother got accepted to the Berklee College of Music and my father plays the saxophone,” Yang said. “So, me and my sister started taking lessons at seven or eight.”

But he didn’t give up. In fact, Yang became more determined to perfect his art, even seeking mentorship with jazz trumpeter Jon Deshler in Mount Angel.

Starting out on the violin, Yang was initially uninterested in the music he was learning.

“After a few years of not being committed, in 2020, right before the pandemic, I switched to the piano,” Yang said. “One of my first interests was film scores.”

A homeschool student, Yang began teaching himself to play his favorite music using YouTube tutorials. Then, after a couple of years, he started in-person lessons as well.

“I wasn’t a very good student,” he admitted.

“Because it was boring stuff… the quintessential experience.”

Then, in 2023 his parents took him to Christo’s in Salem where every Thursday

and Saturday night the pizzeria transforms into a lounge that hosts “some of the greatest jazz, funk, blues and soul in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.”

“We had been to the [Arlene] Schnitzer [Concert Hall],” Yang said. “But this was such a difference. It was kind of rundown, but there was so much energy.”

That night changed everything for Yang.

He began studying jazz in earnest – teaching himself, taking lessons from a teacher in Portland and joining Silverton Middle

“I introduced myself and I think he… recognized that I was an anomaly. So, I started rehearsing with him regularly,” Yang said. “It was interesting to play with adults.

You have to hold your own.”

Although challenging, those experiences prepared Yang for both joining the Jazz Band at Silverton High School and later establishing a jazz combo of his own.

“It’s small and intimate and gives me the opportunity to play with people committed to jazz…” Yang said. “I want to see people starting their own jazz practice and going out to see jazz live.”

Which is why he is determined to spread his love of jazz to his community.

“It’s good to have music diversity,” he pointed out. “And here in Silverton I think it’s important for people to listen and appreciate stuff they may not have [experienced before].”

Yang has recently begun playing venues throughout the Willamette Valley. On Aug. 31, 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Old Mill Park that will include the Silverton Friends of Music’s Music Monday event.

“I hope people can look at this jazz combo and say… I’d like to see more jazz around town,” he said.

He’s also hoping more budding musicians will consider experimenting with jazz.

“You don’t have to be a professional musician to play,” he said. “With jazz you don’t even have to be good. You can just sit in and jam.”

“The Silver Falls Film Festival is a onenight, family-friendly celebration of outstanding short films from the Pacific Northwest and around the world,” founder Michael Turner said, describing the event’s own new addition – awards for Best Film, Youth Filmmaker and New Point of View.

Sponsored by the Andrew Ulven Trust, the Da Vinci Stage will feature live performances by Silvertonians and those who “have deep roots in the community,” including young performers from both Silverton High school and SoundStream Music.

“Special thanks to Withers Lumber for donating the materials that made this community art experience possible,” Harris said. Additionally she recognized The Farm on Golden Hill, Ninkasi Brewing and Bauman’s Cider for their donations of beer, wine and cider to the Outdoor Pour – the newly renamed adult drink area.

Then, for kids of all ages, “This year marks the festival’s first-ever ice cream truckinspired experience, serving frozen treats when you hear the music,” Harris said.

Whether it’s to experience the art, music, food or simply the community spirit, both Harris and festival coordinator Kahlia Waters hope everyone will consider returning to the Silverton Arts Festival as a favorite summer tradition.

“We’re so excited about all the cool offerings we have this year,” Waters said.

Getting the goods Wine, whiskey, beef, apples, oranges and more On June 12, just as the summer tourist season was kicking off, Steve and Stephanie Bobb, owners of Ollie’s Wine & Whiskey Bar walked into a true mess. A water line in the 1908 building broke and flooded a large portion of the bar. “It was literally raining in the basement,” Stephanie Bobb said.

The floors were warped, asbestos was discovered and furniture was damaged.

However, Summit Restoration swooped in and in just 13 days they were able to get Ollie’s once again serving its tasty pizzas and specialty drinks with live music on stage.

A tastier moo is being raised just outside of Silverton. Jake and Elena Metzger have raised American Wagyu beef locally for about a decade. This month Pudding River Beef went beyond offering their products for pickup, but also started taking orders online and shipping nationwide through puddingriverbeef. com. While many farms require buyers

to spend money on a quarter cow or larger portion, Pudding River lets customers order smaller portions, including steaks. Pudding River uses Century Oak Packing, a family-owned and USDA-inspected facility outside Mount Angel.

Apples to Oranges is celebrating 13 years and while it hasn’t always been easy, owner, and former Silverton city counselor Laurie Carter said it has been rewarding. “I said to myself that I could do that so I did it,” she said. “I feel small towns are dead if they don’t have retail.”

While she started out with custom yarns and gifts, she expanded to include art supplies, puzzles, specialty teas and more.Carter said she has made lifelong

friends through the shop and always enjoys conversation with the many people just visiting Silverton. “I have people come in from out of town or out of state saying this is the best shop they’ve seen,” she said.

Brody Kuenzi graduated from Silverton High School in 2025 and started NW Garage Cleanouts in July. His goal is to help people deal not only with the clutter around their homes and garages, but also help moving furniture and other large items, making dump runs and more. “Honestly I always wanted to do something that helps people and this helps people drastically,” he said. He also assists with organizing spaces in the home.

As a safety note, Silver Falls and Mt. Angel school districts both start Aug. 31.

So keep your eyes open for kids crossing streets. Also be patient with the bus drivers as they learn the routes.

One dead in Mount Angel house fire A Mount Angel resident has died following a mobile home fire that aggressively overtook the structure.

According to the Mt. Angel Fire District, a fire at Bavarian Village Mobile Court, at 830 N. Main St., was called in around 1 a.m. on Aug. 7.

Crews found the residence “heavily involved with fire” and learned an individual may be trapped inside.

Due to the intensity of the flames and potential hazard to life, additional support crews were dispatched from Monitor, Silverton, Woodburn and Hubbard.

During a search of the residence, responders located one deceased occupant in the master bedroom. The district had not identified the deceased by press time pending notification of family.

The fire was brought under control around 2:30 a.m. with no damage reported to additional structures.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was conducted by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office and Marion Polk Fire Investigation. As of press time a cause had not been reported.

MAFD reminded residents of “the critical importance of working smoke alarms.”

Man drowns at Scotts Mills park A 20-year-old man has drowned in Butte Creek at Scotts Mills County Park and authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death. Little information was initially released.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched Aug. 4 at 8:24 p.m. to a report of a possible drowning at the park. Upon an initial search, the subject could not be located.

Early in the morning of Aug. 5, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered the body of the man.

Investigators remained on site the rest of

the day. Additional information had not been released as of press time.

In a press release Aug. 5, MCSO said it “extends its condolences to the victim’s family and asks the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Public agencies warn swimming in lakes and rivers this time of year can be hazardous due to cold water from snow melt. Additional hazards are currently posed by lower-than-normal water levels, including an increase in rocks, debris and other submerged objects that are now much nearer or above the surface.

Apparent suicide near Webb Lake A 19-year-old woman has been found dead of apparent suicide near Webb Lake, in Silverton, according to authorities.

On Aug. 12 around 11:37 a.m., police received reports of a deceased person on a walking path near the lake, according to a news release from the Silverton Police Department.

The Marion County Medical Examiner’s

Office determined the subject died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound several hours before she was found. Police said this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no threat of harm to the general public.

SPD advised residents who may be experiencing a mental health or emotional crisis to call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Kentucky man dies in fall at South Falls A Kentucky man has died after falling from the top of South Falls at Silver Falls State Park while attempting to take a selfie, according to Oregon State Police.

In a news release Aug. 11, OSP said first responders were dispatched to the park around 6:36 p.m. Aug. 10 to a report that someone had fallen from the top of the falls.

Investigation revealed Zachary Nicholas Mertens, 20, of Burlington, Kentucky, had accessed a closed area to pose for photographs at the top of the waterfall.

He slipped and fell into the water 177 feet below, according to the release.

Mertens was declared deceased at the scene. His remains were recovered by Marion County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue.

Stephen Carbone May 12, 1951 – April 6, 2026

Patrick Unger July 17, 1953 – July 10, 2026

Stephen Louis Carbone, 74, passed away on April 6, 2026 at his home in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Steve was born in South Boston, Massachusetts, to Louis and Rita (Benoit) Carbone. While still a young boy, the family moved to Southern California. He was a devoted to his mother and they enjoyed attending California Angels baseball games and horse races together.

One of six children, Patrick Unger was born to Arnold and Mary Unger in Grants Pass, Oregon. He spent his childhood picking berries, hauling hay, and cutting hops in Mount Angel, and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School.

In 1969, Steve began what would become his lifelong career in the airline industry as a ramp, gate and operations agent.

He married Judy Piatz in 1987 and a life of adventure and travel began. In the 1990s they began an online business selling German nutcrackers, ornaments and other collectibles.

He was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer a year ago but still managed to make one more trip to Oregon in September of 2025 for the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest.

He loved Oregon and hoped to move back there. Oregon is Steve’s final resting place.

Steve is survived by his wife of 38 years, Judy (Piatz) Carbone; sisters and brothersin-law Carolyn and Terry Connolly; and Ruth and Philip Wehby; nieces and nephew Sarah, Abigail, Joseph, Maggie and Rachael Wehby and Mary Grace Connolly.

Steve was a man with many interests: bicycling, golf, computers and was selftaught in building his own computer.

During a trip to Napa Valley, he developed an interest in wine and became quite the connoisseur. He was Mr. Fix-It, and quite handy with household repairs.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Francis and Carol Piatz Scholarship Fund for a scholarship for a graduating senior at JFK. Donations for the scholarship fund can be sent to Mt. Angel School District Office, 730 E. Marquam St., Mt. Angel, OR 97362. Make checks payable to Mt. Angel School District with the Piatz Scholarship Fund noted in the memo.

Steve and Judy enjoyed 38 years together.

While still in high school, Pat watched a documentary on the Galápagos Islands and decided that he had to see them for himself. He wrote to Oregon Governor Tom McCall requesting an appointment to the California Maritime Academy. After meeting Pat, the governor recommended him as an outstanding candidate from Oregon. At the academy, Pat achieved his dream of sailing to the Galápagos, along with Fiji and other far-flung ports. He would go on to sail all over the world for the next two decades, serving aboard carrier ships, tugboats, barges, and tankers.

Pat met his future wife, Lois, while taking postgraduate classes at the University of Oregon. They married, and their son, Stephen, and daughter, Stephanie, made their home in Oregon. Pat eventually retired and the family moved first to Texas and later to South Florida.

Respected throughout the maritime community, Pat was an active member of the Council of American Master Mariners (CAMM), the International Federation of Shipmasters’ Associations (IFSMA), and the Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC) to the Department of Homeland Security. He also served as president of CAMM’s Houston Chapter.

After retiring, Pat and Lois returned to Oregon, settling in Keizer to be closer to family. Together they worked in a yard that became the envy of the neighborhood and a vegetable garden that fed not only themselves but family and neighbors alike.

They attended yoga classes, worked out at the gym, and spent summers hiking and kayaking with their children.

Patrick is survived by his beloved partner, Lois; his children, Stephen and Stephanie; his siblings, Michael, Joseph, and Julie; and a loving circle of nieces and nephews, Jon, Jessie, Jill, Justine, and Jeremy and their families, as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins. A private memorial was held for family and friends.

Carl Buchholz Nov. 26, 1937 – July 27, 2026 Carl Francis Buchholz was born on Nov. 26, 1937, in Silverton, Oregon, to Martin and Mary Buchholz and lived his 88 years near Mount Angel, Oregon. He passed away at home on July 27, 2026.

Carl married Geraldine Whipple on Nov. 25, 1967, and settled in their current residence near Mount Angel and together they raised their son Carl John (CJ) Buchholz.

Carl was a farmer, later taking jobs in town to support their family business. He was a life-long lover of hunting and fishing; one of his fondest memories was taking a trip to Sitka, Alaska, to fish with his son and friends. He loved animals, especially the family dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Geraldine Buchholz; siblings Kenneth Buchholz, Father Athanasius Buchholz, Pauline and Ida. Carl is survived by his son CJ (Alicia); grandchildren Debra (Richard) and John; sisters Marcine, Veronica, Grace, Florence and Anne; his niece Kari Klinski in Michigan; and several other nieces and nephews.

Marian Bielemeier May 14, 1927 – July 17, 2026

Patricia Heintz April 10, 1931 – Aug. 1, 2026 Patricia Anne Magill Heintz was born in North Bend, Oregon, to Dorothea Feyrer Magill and Otto Willis Magill.

Pat grew up in Molalla, Oregon, with her brother Austin and sister Katharine. She married Gordon Paul Gruver and they had two children, Grant William Heintz (Becky) and Jenifer Louise Zeek (Earl).

After they divorced, she went to OSU where she met her husband James Heintz.

They were married in 1957 and had three children, Mary Katharine Wynn (Gary), Alexander Allen Heintz (Michelle) and

Suzanne Helen DuMont (Jeff).

They moved to Silverton, Oregon where they resided the remainder of their lives. She loved her family, her church, Immanuel Lutheran, and was an avid gardener. Her family was most important to her, having five children, 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren. Her husband proceeded her in death along with their eldest son, Grant.

Robert Fennimore Sept. 5, 1957 – July 5, 2026 Rob Fennimore was born in Silverton, Oregon, to Mick and Elaine Fennimore, the oldest of three. After serving his country in the Air Force, Rob married Karen Gabriel in 1982.

Together, they raised three sons: Erik, Nicholas, and Logan.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Rob found his greatest joy outdoors, having adventures with his sons and close friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Fennimore; his three sons, Erik (Julie), Nicholas (Alexi), and Logan (Sierra); and many family and friends who will miss him dearly.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family appreciates the love and supporrt they have received.

Frances Baxa Oct. 19, 1936 – July 24, 2026

Marian spent the first 12 years of her life on her family’s farms in Twin Falls and Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they grew potatoes and sugar beets. She helped with the farm work and took care of her three younger siblings, but with the Great Depression in the U.S., crop prices severely collapsed and all farmers were struggling to keep their farms. After Marian’s father passed away unexpectedly, her mother made the decision in 1940 to sell the farm and move to the Willamette Valley in Oregon, where some other relatives had already settled. They eventually ended up in Mount Angel, and that became the lifelong home for the Konen family.

Marian attended Benedictine Sister’s Catholic Mt. Angel Academy, graduating in the Class of 1945.

She dearly cherished her high school group of friends who remained close all through the coming years. In 1946, Marian married Raymond Bielemeier, a native of Mount Angel. After their wedding at St. Mary Catholic Church, and a Honeymoon trip to Yellowstone National Park, they settled into their Mount Angel home and began their 73 years of marriage together, raising their family of four children, Nick, Char, Gregg, and John. Marian was a busy Mom with her children’s school activities, teaching Catholic faith formation and with canning of the harvest from her fruit and vegetable gardens.

At her home, she hosted many holiday gatherings, birthday parties, picnics and other social and church events. There was always time for friends and relatives who could stop by anytime for a cup of coffee and then be sent off with a bouquet of some of the many flowers Marian grew all around the yard. Family adventures in the summer included traveling to Crater Lake in their ‘60 Ford station wagon, and annual camping or fishing trips with friends and family to Three Creeks Lake.

After the kids grew up, Marian kept busy with working at the Mt. Angel Senior Center as Nutrition Coordinator in charge of senior meals, selling locally-made crafts and always blessing someone with heartfelt conversation and her fun-loving spirit. She also volunteered at the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center, visiting her mother-in-law there and many other long-time friends and neighbors.

In later years, Ray and Marian made frequent fishing trips to Central Oregon and the Oregon Coast, and they enjoyed traveling around the U.S. visiting relatives in Idaho and Minnesota, as well as vacationing in Hawaii and at Disneyland, always taking many photos to remember the fun in later years.

Our dear sister Fran passed away July 24, 2026, peacefully with family at her side. Fran was born at home, Oct. 19, 1936, on a sunny afternoon to Karl and Lydia (Stadeli) Dettwyler. She was the fifth of 10 children.

She attended Brush Creek School and later received her high school diploma through American Correspondence School in Chicago.

Fran then went to Oregon Technical Institute (OTI), the mile-high technical school in Klamath Falls and earned her X-ray tech degree.

She interned at McMinnville Hospital for several years before moving to Portland where she worked at a medical clinic and doctor’s office for many years. After more than 20 years working in the medical field, Fran went into landscape design and opened JB Plant Barn, a successful garden center, gift shop and floral design service. She also provided FTD services to the Aloha and surrounding area.

Fran married Joe Baxa on Oct. 19, 1991, and they moved to Silverton after selling the garden center. They bought a home overlooking the Winter Lake on Silverton Road, within walking distance from her childhood home. Fran enjoyed painting, spending time with family, and her large collection of giraffes.

She will be greatly missed by her remaining siblings and their families. She is survived by her siblings Marie Jensen, William (Mary) Dettwyler, Alice (Jerry) Schurter, Bob (Gail) Dettwyler, Arlene (Rich) Gamache, Bernie (Margaret) Dettwyler, sisters-in-law Barbara Dettwyler and Alice Dettwyler. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe; brothers Rudolph (Esther), Fred, Sam Dettwyler and brother-in-law Paul Jensen.

A graveside service was held July 31 at the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. A memorial service was held Aug. 1 at the Apostolic Church at Central Howell.

Marian Theresa Bielemeier, of Mount Angel, Oregon, passed away on July 17, 2026, at the age of 99. Marian was born on May 14, 1927, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Nickolas John and Katherine Cecilia (Brinkmann) Konen.

From 1969 to 1979, Marian and Ray were blessed with six grandsons and one granddaughter. They all loved her spunky personality, her laugh, the unique birthday and Christmas gifts she gave them and the life lessons she taught them by example. Through the next 20 years, there would be 14 greatgrandchildren, and finally, six great-great-grandchildren.

Marian Bielemeier lived a full and blessed life. She was a woman of deep Catholic faith and trust in God, a unique blend of hard work, humor, generosity, kindness, and resilience in the face of adversity. She is now resting in peace with her beloved Ray. The family wishes to say Thank You to the staff at Mt. Angel Health and Rehabilitation for all the care for Marian for the past nine years.

Marian is survived by her son Nick (wife Pam) of Hood River; her daughter Char Arritola (husband Rick) of Mount Angel; her son Gregg of Portland; her son John (wife MaryKay) of Mount Angel; grandchildren Lance, Troy, Eric and Brad Arritola; Josh Bielemeier; Carmen (Bielemeier) Tuttle; and Aaron Bielemeier; 16 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; sister-in-law Joan Konen-Jones and many nieces and nephews. Marian was preceded in death by her parents Katherine and Nickolas Konen; her husband Ray Bielemeier; her infant sister Marjorie; her brothers Tony Konen and John Konen; sister-in-law Betty (Hassler) Konen; her sister LaVon Hills; and brother-in-law Ray Hills.

A Rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m. with mass of Christian burial starting at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mount Angel. A reception will follow in the St. Mary Parish Center.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marian’s memory can be sent to Oregon Right to Life.

Full hearts and bellies SACA’s Backpack Buddies feeds kids in need

By Melissa Wagoner Before Dee Town moved to Silverton six years ago, she attended a fundraiser for a food pantry in Vancouver, Washington, where she heard the term “Backpack Buddies” for the first time. What she discovered that night was a program developed to provide a take-home breakfast, lunch and dinner option to students who might otherwise go without those meals during days off from school.

“It just touched my heart,” Town recalled.

“So, when my husband and I moved here, I asked [SACA] about it. I said, when you start it, I’m your number one volunteer.”

“We served a total of 84 students in K-8,” Town said. “As we went along, we started increasing the numbers. Word gets out.”

Each student – selected by the counselors at the participating schools – received an initial welcome letter including information about both the Backpack Buddies program and SACA’s food pantry. Then every other week thereafter, a bag was packed with easy to prepare items like cereal, soup, snacks and fresh fruit, then delivered to the school’s office.

“It is 100 percent confidential…” Town said. “We deliver on Wednesday afternoons and then it’s up to the school to distribute.”

That means additional grant writing and fundraising ahead of the program’s Oct. 1 start date.

“This community is wonderful about donating,” Town said.

“I’m hoping they can do a little extra.”

Especially in terms of monetary donations, which volunteers can use to purchase more food than the typical shopper.

“Our buying power is generally better than the public’s,” DeSantis confirmed.

Because the volunteers attempt to keep the large number of bags identical, buying in bulk is a necessity.

“I don’t like the thought of kids going hungry,” Town said.

“I think people feel it’s the responsibility of the parents but we’re in a rough economic situation right now and a lot of people are affected. If we can help students by filling their bellies that makes me happy.”

Teams play just once a week, usually on Friday night, and as a sportswriter and as a person who loves routines, that practice during the week and play on Friday night just oozes perfection. Yes, I know, many teams watch film and lift weights on Saturday but it’s my fantasy, so I can mess with it.

Anyway, I look forward to high school football season in a way that a seasoned professional might say is bad for my mental health. Might. And who’s to say that finding high school football a joy is not a sure sign of STRONG mental health.

Anyway.

Silverton is coming off a state championship season in its fourth campaign under Dan Lever. The Foxes, whom I have been covering since 2012, have advanced to the semifinals eight times during that span and also won a title in 2021.

Kennedy, led by veteran coach Joe Panuke, were 7-3 a year ago and advanced to the state Class 3A quarterfinals. The Trojans, who won a 2A title in 2018, have finished second four times under Panuke, including a loss to Cascade Christian in the 2022 Class 3A title game. Kennedy remains the lone Class 2A team that has chosen to “play up” at Class 3A to continue campaigning in 11-man football (2A switched to nineOR CCB #67422

In other words, both programs are really good and eminently worth watching and following. But covering football can be a challenge for a publication such as Our Town, which publishes twice a month, on the first and the 15th. Here’s an example: Silverton plays at Grants Pass on Friday, Sept. 11, which is after our deadline for the Sept. 15 edition. Thus, any information on Grants Pass must wait until Oct. 1, a date by which time Silverton would have played South Albany (Sept. 18), had a bye (Sept. 25) and be getting ready for Lebanon (Oct. 2).

Thus, this space rarely contains gameby-game information on football. I definitely will look at trends, but to keep current we use the Our Town website and Facebook. When I preview a game, such as Aug. 25 or so for the Foxes’ Aug. 28 opener against Coeur d’Alene (Idaho) and around Sept. 2 for the Trojans’ opener against Santiam Christian, I will post the story on the ourtownlive.com website and link it to Facebook. If I cover a game it gets posted in the same way, usually

Kennedy, led by its Class 2A-1A state championship baseball team, scored 1,557.5. Bandon led Class 2A with 2,520.25, followed by Regis (1,988), Lowell (1,815), East Linn Christian (1,760), Trinity Lutheran (1,708.5), Oakland (1,692.5) and Crosshill Chrisitian (1,600).

Kennedy won the OSAA Cup five times in a row from 2016 through 2020, while also triumphing in 2023.

Steffen won the Saturday, Aug. 8, mile race along the parade route in 4:58:36. Kintz won Sunday’s 5K covered bridge run in 16:16.87, with Steffen second in 17:41.07.

Linda Kneeland, 51, of Bozeman Montana, was 12th in the mile in 6:42.89 and seventh in the 5K in 22:28.85. She was the first female finisher in both events.

OSAA Cup: Silverton finished seventh and Kennedy eighth in the OSAA Cup competition, which includes athletics, academics and sportsmanship components. The Foxes scored 3,000 points in Class 5A, led by their state championship football team and double champion dance and drill squad.

A Slice of the Pie

Unlikely pen pals Making friends across ages and distances In May I was given a very unusual assignment – replying to a letter Our Town received from an 89-year-old former resident of Sublimity, Annette (Ripp) Thomas.

“To whom it may concern, I am still alive…” Thomas’s letter began. “I’m in Dallas, Oregon… Please write me. I miss many people.”

Upon finishing the letter, it occurred to me that submitting a request for a pen pal to Our Town – a publication she has been reading for over 20 years – was a stroke of genius. After all, what better way is there to reach out to a community, letting them know you would like to reconnect?

And it turns out she’s not alone. Across the country, retirees are looking to pen pals as a means of connection and communitybuilding. In fact, two local retirement homes – Davenport Place in Silverton and the Mt. Angel Towers in Mt. Angel – are doing just that. In the case of Davenport Place, joining the “Hearts Across America” Valentine

And at the Mt. Angel Towers, partnering with Tricia King’s third and fourth grade class at Bethany Charter School in 2025 to match 32 seniors with as many elementary school students.

“For the past several years, our administrator, Kathy Frank, wanted each classroom to do a service-learning project,” King, said when asked how the partnership came about.

“In years past, I have taken my class to the Orchard House and Mt. Angel Towers to sing for the residents and pass out homemade cards. It was always a rewarding experience, but this year I wanted to make it more meaningful. I wanted to connect with the residents on a deeper level than just meeting and shaking hands. I talked with the activities director at the Towers, Sharrie Hunter, and we agreed to give the pen pal idea a try. That way, the students and residents could write back and forth and then meet when we went up to the Towers

to sing for Veterans Day.”

Hunter had similar observations.

Introduced to their student pen pal via an initial letter with a biography and photograph, the residents of Mt. Angel Towers were immediately on board, first writing letters then meeting their pen pals for music and snacks a total of four times throughout the school year.

“One of my favorite things as an activity director is the buzz you hear at a successful event…” she said. “The buzz when the children are here is amazing! It’s like magic to the residents.”

“Some of the residents don’t have families and they benefit from the interaction with the children,” Hunter said.

And the children benefited as well, in ways King didn’t expect.

“One of the best lessons we learned (in addition to learning how to correctly write addresses, etc.) was that we have so much in common,” she said. “One little boy who was matched with a lady in her 90s discovered that she was a football fan… and she loves the Oregon Ducks, just like he does…

Many of the other kids discovered… their pen pals had pets, played sports, went on vacations, did chores… just like we do! It was so heartwarming…”

Welcome to the 2026 Silverton Arts Festival!

We’re so pleased to invite you back to this beloved local tradition. Thanks to generous investment across Silverton, from sponsors to volunteers, the Arts Festival makes a return after two years on pause. In that time, Silverton residents and regional partners came together to build a stronger foundation for year-round arts access in our town. More funding, more staff, more arts education.

The re-launch of the Arts Festival is not just a victory for a weekend event -- it’s a victory for art in Silverton, every day of the year.

As before, you’ll find dozens of highly skilled Pacific Northwest artists under the trees of Coolidge McClaine Park. They are the heart and soul of our event. You’ll also find new ways to engage through professional demos and creative experiences. Be sure to seek out Candy Chang’s internationally recognized public art project, Before I Die, an installation that invites visitors to share their hopes and dreams.

In addition to gathering artists from around the Northwest, we continue to celebrate local artists of all ages. The Da Vinci Stage, sponsored by the Andrew Ulven Trust, shines a spotlight on local talent, with more than half this year's performers either from Silverton or with deep roots here. Nearby the stage, be sure to check out our new Outdoor Pour area for beer, wine, and cider, plus a new ice cream service at the Park House children’s center!

FESTIVAL ARTIST BOOTH NUMBERS

This year’s featured artist, Rosie Augustine, joins us from West Linn, OR: A traditional art training where I grew up in Scotland guided me across the pond to Oregon and an entrepreneurial career creating learning products for children and teens.

Now focusing on ne art, my inspiration comes from keeping my eyes and mind open. Sketches, doodles and elements I’ve already painted can also contribute to the next visual story brewing in my head. You’ll often see humor in my paintings which is a carry over from always trying to make my dad laugh when I was a kid.

I’m truly thankful to be doing what I love. There’s such joy in seeing visitors enjoy my art and even more so when my work finds a new home!
