This time of year is prime time for displaying American flags. Memorial Day is 10 days away, Flag Day is June 14 and a July 4 is looming in which Americans also will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Our Town has heard from residents and reached out to American Legion representatives from Mount Angel and Silverton and we’re here to offer some tips on proper display and care of flags.

Paul Zenchenko of Silverton’s American Legion Delbert Reeves No. 7, prefaced his comments with a disclaimer: “I can safely say on behalf of all veterans, flying the flag is the most important thing,” Zeanchenko told Our Town.

Zenchenko also added some key do’s and don’ts: Weather: Do not display in rain or snow unless an allweather flag is used.

Orientation: The union (stars) should always be at the peak, or at the top left when hung.

Distress: Only fly upside down to signal dire distress.

Decorations: Do not use for advertising, as clothing/ bedding, or for draping.

Zenchenko added that “there are several Silverton

The issue of worn and torn flags is what led Silverton’s Charlie Bailey to reach out to Our Town. Bailey, who is retired after a career as a special effects artist and model maker for 77 films, 28 commercials and four amusement parks, including work for Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars and Star Trek iterations, passed along a six-page booklet of protocols.

Of particular concern to Bailey is taking care of flags that have seen better days.

“I recommend that you replace your faded, ragged flag with a bright new one, made in America, by union labor,” Bailey told Our Town.

Jim Kosel of American Legion Post No. 89 in Mount Angel, noted the importance of the process of folding a flag, and what each fold might mean. Kosel also mentioned the procedure for disposing of unserviceable flags.

“It was written back in the 1930s, I believe, which includes soaking in kerosene and burning,” Kosel said. “We no longer soak in kerosene, but we (Post 89) do burn them on Flag Day, June 14th.”

Kosel also referred interested parties to the U.S. code on the flag protocol issue, which lives in the Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 6. Here is a link to further information: https:// us-flag.net/code/.

Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died while serving in the armed forces of the United States.

Here is a look at the Memorial plans in Silverton. All events are at Freedom Plaza in Town Square Park: Friday, May 22, 8 a.m.: The American Legion Delbert Reeves Post No. 7, Mayor Jason Freilinger and members of the Silverton City Council will post the service flags.

Friday, May 22, noon: A wreath-laying ceremony with Silver Falls Superintendent Kim Kellison, Silverton High ASB President Addie Lord, the SHS Choraliers directed

by Kimberly Skondin, the SHS Band directed by Eric Nelson and the Silverton Middle School leadership team led by Jackie Renoud.

Monday, May 25, noon: Silverton civic leaders and firstresponders will be on hand, including Mayor Freilinger, Silverton Fire Chief Bill Miles and a representative of the Silverton Police Department. Also, a transfer of a Silverton service member’s WWII “Dog Tags” to the Silverton Historical Society. The Military Vehicle Collection Club of Oregon will have vehicles on display.

On June 14, Flag Day and the 251st birthday of the U.S. Army: the Silverton Elks will have an all-day presentation commemorating past flags of the United States at Freedom Plaza.

Mount Angel honors those who served

By Stephen Floyd American Legion Post 89, in Mount Angel, will host its annual Memorial Day Service on May 25 at Calvary Cemetery.

The public is invited to attend.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and with music from the Marion County Citizens Band, followed by a mass by Rev. Ralph Recker of St Mary Church at approximately 10 a.m.

Other observances include a military flyover scheduled for 11:05 a.m. by the Oregon Air National Guard, a reading of the names of the fallen, and a volley salute by the Post 89 Honor Guard.

Post 89 Adjutant Jim Kosel, an Air Force veteran, said Mount Angel has a special connection to the armed forces. He said 10 percent of the population served in WWII, a high rate for any community – much less a small town – and that residents today continue to feel a strong connection to veterans.

Kosel said one thing unique about Mount Angel’s Memorial Day service is mass will be given from the hood of a jeep, similar to how soldiers may have experienced a sermon in the field. He said clergy would travel to wherever forces were deployed during combat and would often hold services standing on the jeep that brought them, and on whatever day of the week they arrived.

Residents who attend are encouraged to bring their own law chairs. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be moved into St. Mary Church.

Legion Hall Mount Angel plans for a new building

By Stephen Floyd American Legion Post 89 in Mount Angel has begun fundraising to rebuild its Legion Hall into a more accessible, modern space that can welcome more visitors.

The current building, at 740 E. College St., is 90 years old with a split-level design with stairs to enter the main floor and basement.

Improvements such as ramps or an elevator were either impractical or cost prohibitive, so conversations shifted to constructing a new ground-level building.

The project is estimated at $800,000 and the legion has a commitment from the Larry and Jeanette Epping Family Foundation to match the first $275,000 raised.

The legion plans to hold a groundbreaking ceremony May 27 to mark commencement of the project and install a fundraising thermometer outside to update progress.

Legion member and fundraiser organizer Martha Kosel, an Army veteran, said they have no doubt Mount Angel will come out to support the project.

“I think that our community is pretty American Legion-strong,” said Kosel. “They see how much we do in the community and they really respect us.”

Access to community

Accessibility at the Legion Hall has long been discussed, including between John Gooley and Gary Epping, two figures central to the rebuild.

Gooley is a member of Knights of Columbus, which rents the building along with the Mt. Angel Fire District for regular meetings. Epping’s father, Larry Epping, was a WWII veteran and a Legion member for many decades.

Gooley and Epping are also longtime friends and involved in local non-profits, Gooley as vice president of the Mount Angel Community Foundation and Epping as president of the Epping Family Foundation.

Accessibility is a meaningful topic for Epping, said Gooley, as his father struggled to access the Legion Hall as he became older, and because Epping himself uses a wheelchair. When they learned an elevator would cost around $300,000, Gooley said Epping asked why they don’t consider a new building instead.

The Epping Family Foundation has since made its $275,000 matching commitment to the project, while the Community Foundation has taken a leadership role in fundraising and development. They contracted with High Lake Development, of Bend, to flesh out initial plans.

Designs in hand

The proposed rebuild would replace the current 1,500-square-foot main floor with a 1,650-square-foot ground-level structure.

The new building would include ramp access, two new bathrooms, one of which will be ADA-accessible, an updated kitchen and 660-square-foot meeting room.

He said these upgrades would “help the legion quite a bit” and that “it’s going to be much easier” for those with limited mobility to access the building.

He noted that the Community Foundation oversaw fundraising for the Festhalle, built in 2011, and gathered roughly $1.5 million

for the building. He said they are using the same grant writer, Jamie Johnk, for the Legion Hall. She will be contacting multiple potential grant providers in the coming weeks.

Community connections The rebuild will reallocate the usable square footage of the building, Kosel said, so the legion will not be able to keep all the memorabilia currently on display. These include flags, photographs, medals, artwork and other items depicting the history of military service in Mount Angel.

She said the legion will be returning some items to the families of the donors, adding that people are welcome to approach the legion about specific items they wish to have returned. She said they will also be placing some artifacts into a WWI-era footlocker as a sealed time capsule for future generations.

Kosel said the community has already shown support for the rebuild, with $800 raised during a series of Bingo nights in March and April at Tiny’s Tavern. The bar is also offering a raffle for prizes including Silver Falls cabin stays, an ocean fishing trip, wine tasting and box seats to the St. Paul Rodeo.

Tickets are $25 each. The drawing is June 1.

The legion will also accept donations during an Armed Forces Day event May 16 at Angels’ Auto Werke featuring displays of military vehicles. Initial fundraising will continue through Oktoberfest.

Kosel said the current building holds “a lot of memories” for local veterans and their families. The legion plans to hold an open house before demolition to say goodbye.

She added the new building will help more people stay connected, whether through the legion, the knights, the fire district, or those renting the building for private events.

Life-saving gift A new generation is being asked to make blood donations

Stephen Grady understands why the thought of giving blood makes some people feel squeamish. At one point he even experienced those feelings himself.

“There are lots of different opportunities to donate,” he said, listing regular locations in both Stayton and Silverton including Stayton Community Foothills Church, the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Silverton and the Silverton Elks Lodge.

“I was always someone through high school and college who was like, ‘Needles, blood, ah!’” he said, adding, “I remember the Red Cross coming to my college and I ignored them and headed the other way.”

Then he joined the organization, most memorably offering disaster relief after a tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

“There was a woman who needed blood and a few volunteers and I went in and donated,” Grady said, recalling how that experience made the connection for him between donating blood and saving lives.

Now working as an account manager for the Marion County branch of the Red Cross, Grady gets to help others make that same association every day by coordinating blood drives across the

“There are people who are early retirement age up to the 60s and 70s that are regular blood donors…” Grady said.

When it comes to younger generations the numbers simply aren’t as high.

“The lodge has been incredibly supportive,” Grady said. “And Chuck [Leonard] has been a fantastic partner.”

In charge of organizing blood drives for the Department of Agriculture during his career, Leonard utilized his skills postretirement by scheduling drives at the Elks Lodge, where he has been a member for 48 years.

“It’s air conditioned and we have a lot of space,” Leonard said.

But the convenient space is only part of why Leonard wanted to continue his involvement. The primary reason was the importance of the cause.

“It literally saves lives,” he emphasized.

“We are seeing a big shift,” he confirmed.

“So, we want to engage with young people.”

Which is why maintaining a stable supply of blood is critically important.

“We have the luxury in the U.S. of having a blood bank, so most of the time when we need blood it’s there for us,” Grady noted.

But supplies, especially of some uncommon blood types, can dip, particularly during months when vacations disrupt routines – Thanksgiving to January, spring break and summer.

“And weather does factor in,” Grady added. “December and January there are large snowstorms… hurricane season can impact [supply], and hot weather makes it hard for people to donate because of staying hydrated.”

Especially students like those at Silverton High School where the Health Occupations program organizes one of the largest annual blood drives in Marion County.

“A high school blood drive has a different energy,” Grady said of the event, which will take place this year on May 20 from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the SHS gym.

“It has a really fun energy… They’ll have 100 kids along with parents and staff that come in. There isn’t much to compare to it. It’s definitely one of the largest.”

And most important, teens learn firsthand why donating blood is a vital community service.

“The reason to donate is to make a difference in someone’s life…” Grady said. “And there are lots of different opportunities.”

By Melissa Wagoner Most people have heard of spring cleaning a home, but have you ever heard of spring cleaning a community?

It’s a trend that is spreading, with community members taking to the streets, showing up in parks, and lining the roadways armed with equipment to pick up trash, weed, mulch and generally freshen up the area after the long winter months.

“I started doing an Earth Day clean-up the first year I opened my preschool in 2022,” Lara Ghio Gaitan – owner of Solecitos Bilingual Preschool in Silverton – said.

“During our daily nature walks, the children and I began noticing how much litter had found its way into the places we love. It felt like a moment to pause and ask ourselves what kind of world we want to help create.

When April 22nd – Earth Day – came around, it felt like the perfect opportunity to show the children that even the smallest hands can make a meaningful difference.”

Similarly, Silverton High School has a 40-year tradition of what has come to be known as “Spring Clean-Up Day,” during which members of the senior class partner with Silverton’s Public Works Department to keep the city’s parks, public spaces, and community “vibrant and welcoming.”

graduation, it is about much more than earning hours…” assistant principal Joseph Traeger explained.

“Service learning helps students see how classroom learning connects to real-world impact. It builds responsibility, pride in their hometown, and a sense of belonging.

Bond on the ballot? SFSD facilities study outlines needs, concerns

By Stephen Floyd The Silver Falls School District is nearing the end of a long-range facilities study for a possible bond measure in November, with an initial draft showing significant need across the district.

The Long-Range Facilities Committee met April 28 to finalize a recommendation to the SFSD Board, which will review and possibly adopt the committee’s findings at a future board meeting.

was rejected by 55.8% of voters. The bond would have addressed deferred maintenance at all district buildings and replaced Silverton Middle School (SMS).

The current committee was formed in January to assist consultants with BRIC Architecture in analyzing and categorizing the needs of the district’s 11 school buildings and the district office.

The final recommendation lists facility needs at each school and possible strategies for repairs, taking into account costs, student needs, community impact and other factors.

According to a March 9 report by BRIC, the district’s buildings have common challenges such as outdated utilities, roofing, windows and disability accommodations. Most of the district’s schools are several decades old, with systems that are antiquated or past their useful lifecycles.

Based on the committee’s findings, the board will determine whether or not to pursue a facilities bond for the Nov. 3 election.

Many repairs would be “disruptive and costly,” according to BRIC, and may involve “substantial renovations and improvements.”

deficiencies across all schools” such as doors without alarms and unsecured exterior corridors. The firm also found that school safety is a universal priority among district members.

The firm also concluded that middleschool facilities throughout the district – including at K-8 schools – are “fundamentally” unable to support ageappropriate curriculum. At SMS itself, BRIC said utility upgrades and other improvements are needed throughout the newer portions of the building, while the condemned 1939 wing would require heavy renovations to be put back to use.

Despite such challenges, BRIC said teachers and administrators have been resourceful and creative in making use of inadequate workspaces. The firm also said CTE program spaces are “well-equipped and purposefully designed,” while libraries throughout the district are welcoming community hubs.

The committee reached out to community members and learned residents feel SFSD is a unique and special place, particularly in regard to the K-8 schools. Feedback was gathered through listening sessions throughout the district and an online survey.

It also observed a rift between rural and city schools and a sense that each group does not feel valued by the other. That sentiment also was expressed during the bond efforts in 2023. The committee reported a general fear and distrust of the district over finances and possible school closures.

Superintendent Kim Kellison said there will be additional community outreach to share and explain the committee’s recommendations. She said committee members brought diverse perspectives and have “been extremely engaged in the process and have done an excellent job prioritizing next steps.”

The Silverton Pet Parade is returning May 16 and is expected to draw children, families – and their animal friends – from all over.

Scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Silverton, the event is expected to see hundreds of participants with pets ranging from cats, dogs, rabbits, reptiles, llamas and more.

The parade lineup begins at 9:30 a.m. at Coolidge and Apple streets.

Participants will be arranged by pet category. There is no fee to enter and all types of pets are welcome. Animals and humans alike are encouraged to wear costumes.

At 10 a.m. the parade will travel down Coolidge to Main, then along First to the Silverton Civic Center. At the end, all participating children will receive a goodie bag courtesy of parade organizer Kiwanis Club of Silverton.

After the parade Paws in the Park, a fair celebrating pets, will take place in Coolidge McClaine Park. It is organized by the Silverton Chamber of Commerce. The free event features local vendors and family/petfriendly activities.

The expansion also includes 7,200 square feet of new office space to replace an outdated and cramped office currently standing at 2,500 square feet, the applicant said. Building permit applications were filed with Marion County in March and April. The Mt. Angel Planning Commission gave initial site plan approval in April of 2025.

AI and kids’ mental health What parents need to know

If there are any safety concerns such as self-harm, suicidal thoughts, abuse, or exploitation, parents should seek immediate human help…”

Most teens are interacting with artificial intelligence systems (AI) in some way every day, according to Jennifer Helms, a systems therapist and owner of JenniferAnn Counseling in Silverton.

“They are using it to brainstorm homework ideas, summarize information, practice conversations, get feedback on writing, generate images, and ask personal questions they may feel awkward asking an adult,” Helms said. “In that sense, AI is becoming less of a novelty and more of part of the background of teen life.”

But what does that mean for teens and their development? It’s a question, Helms views as relevant, especially considering the important growth taking place during adolescence.

“Childhood and adolescence are such important developmental windows,” Helms said, “young people are still building the brain-based skills that support judgment, emotion regulation, self-worth, and healthy relationships… Adolescence [is] a period of rapid physical, cognitive, and psychosocial growth, which is exactly why this stage deserves thoughtful, developmentally informed care.”

And why an increase in teens turning to AI with questions about their mental health has therapists like Helms understandably concerned.

“As a supplemental tool, AI may be helpful for low-risk support: guiding a breathing

The risk, Helms suggested, arises when a teen begins turning to AI for emotional support in dealing with more serious issues like depression, trauma, abuse, eating disorders, self-harm or suicidality.

“AI is not a licensed clinician, cannot fully assess safety, may miss nuance, and should not be relied on in crisis,” Helms emphasized.

But how will caregivers know if a child is engaged in these risky behaviors when AI use can easily take place without adult knowledge? Helms suggested being on the lookout for signs that AI use has become problematic.

“Parents should be most concerned when AI use becomes secretive, compulsive, emotionally intimate, or functionally impairing,” Helms began.

“I would pay attention if a teen seems to be confiding in AI instead of people, using it to avoid schoolwork rather than learn, relying on it to make personal decisions, generating extreme appearance-focused or sexualized images, or spending long periods in highly personalized chatbot interactions.

Those patterns raise more concern than occasional homework help.”

Other behaviors to watch for include “increased isolation, irritability when access is interrupted, a noticeable drop in independent thinking, sudden changes in sleep…perfectionism, school avoidance, or language suggesting that the AI ‘gets me better than people do.’”

Although observing one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean a child is engaged in concerning AI behavior, it is, according to Helms, an indication that parents should ask questions.

“Be curious…” Helms said, recommending conversations take place only when the caregivers have achieved their own state of self-regulation. “Lead with concern, not confrontation. Ask what need the AI is meeting… Then work together to widen

“There is real promise there,” Helms confirmed. “But the future will only be healthy if we build strong guardrails around privacy, developmental safety, transparency, crisis response, and the simulation of human relationships.”

Those precautions are especially important when it comes to the interaction between AI and children, whose brain systems – particularly those involving judgment, impulse control, emotional regulation and social learning – are still developing.

“If a teen outsources too much thinking, decision making, problem solving, or emotional processing to AI, they may get immediate relief but lose practice building the very skills they need in real life,” Helms pointed out.

“That is especially concerning in adolescence… I also worry about misinformation, emotional over-reliance, and manipulation. AI can sound confident and caring even when it is wrong.

Adolescents are developmentally more sensitive to reward, novelty, and social feedback, so highly engaging systems can feel unusually persuasive.”

Which is why Helms urges parents to keep the lines of communication with their children open. “[P]arents do not need to become AI experts overnight. What matters most is staying engaged, calm, and relational,” she said.

“The same principles that protect kids in other parts of digital life still apply here: know your child, stay curious, talk early, keep communication open, and look beneath the behavior to the need. AI is a new tool, but kids are still kids. They still need connection, limits, guidance, and adults who are willing to keep showing up.”

Budget moves Committee recommends $116M Silverton package

The Silverton Budget Committee has approved a 202627 budget of approximately $116 million. The spending plan supports 62 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees and authorizes $275,000 in spending on the swimming pool as part of its operational levy.

Pettit Lake: Councilors approved a bid by D&I Excavating of Silverton for work on the Pettit Lake trail that is tentatively scheduled to begin by the end of this month. Financed largely by a $546,000 state parks grant, the main feature will be a trail around the lake, which is just south of The Oregon Garden. Further amenities such as picnic facilities or paddleboard rentals could be added in the future.

The Budget Committee held a public hearing on the spending plan on May 5, and continued its work on May 7 before voting unanimously to recommend it for consideration by the City Council. The Budget Committee consists of Mayor Jason Freilinger and the six city councilors as well as seven citizen members. Only 11 of the 14 members were on hand for the first meeting, with 12 participating in the second. No community members gave testimony during the public comment section of the hearing.

The FTE total actually is down from the 64 authorized by the 2025-26 plan. The city wound up holding off on filling two of the positions, a community resource offer and a transportation manager.

The budget includes 2.9% cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for employees not represented by unions.

Some employees received up to 5% adjustments in an effort to bring their compensation up to market levels.

Unionized police officers received 2.9% COLAs and 4% market adjustments, while unionized Public Works employees received the same COLAs and 2% market adjustments.

The City Council is scheduled to take final action on the budget at its June 17 meeting. By state law the budget must be in place by the July 1 start of the new fiscal year.

The Budget Committee also reviewed and approved a budget of $1,578,813 for the city’s Urban Renewal Agency. The expenditures will essentially max-out the district’s ability to spend URA funds at about $12.7 million. No more tax dollars will be levied for the district.

Some of the projects that have benefited from URA dollars have been City Hall, the upcoming Main Street and park plaza developments, Willamette Valley Pie and Silver Falls Brewery.

Trolleys: Councilors approved the purchase of two electric trolleys for $250,000 in grant funds. The new buses will help the city expand its Silver Trolley service.

Comprehensive plan: Councilors approved a new comprehensive plan for the city. The vote ended an 18-month period in which a task force, consultants, community stakeholder groups, the city’s Planning Commission and state land-use officials all participated in the planning process. The goal of the plan, city officials said, is “to guide the city’s growth and development over the next 20 years while preserving the qualities that make Silverton a unique place to live, work, and visit.” To review the plan, which has been updated for the first time since 2005, go to silverton2050.com/.

Community grants: Councilors approved spending $30,000 in small grants to Silverton-area community groups. The process, spearheaded by Hilary Dumitrescu, assistant to the city manager and deputy city recorder, led to grants of between $750 and $2,500. Examples of the grants include one for a new stage at the Palace Theatre, Sustainable Silverton’s web-cam project at The Oregon Garden and emergency funding for Silverton Area Community Aid. All of the 23 agencies that applied for the grants received at least some funding.

Up next: The City Council meets again at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20. A key agenda item is a discussion and vote on elements of a plan to redevelop one block of Main Street.

Prize winner SHS senior’s Bottling It Up encourages a career in film

“It made me think of water bottles,” Traver – a senior in Abby Shetler’s Video Production Class at Silverton High School – said. “And I was inspired by [the film] Inside Out and the colors.”

“Hiding your emotions is an experience I think we can all relate to,” Traver wrote in the description on her YouTube channel, Mount Everest Studios. “As we go through life, we all face stressors which impact us deeply. Every stressor – no matter how small it seems – add[s] on top of each other until you are lugging around a heavy bag you can barely carry.”

Awarded second place in the contest – along with a $500 prize and the honor of a showing at the Red Carpet Awards Night – Traver is now more determined than ever

to make filmmaking part of her future.

“I want to go into film for my career,” Traver said.

“Screenwriting sounds fun.”

Influenced by television writers like Michael Shur (the

creator of the television series The Good Place) Traver describes her scripts as “dramedy” – tense but funny. And she is excited to continue her filmmaking studies, first at Chemeketa Community College next year, then at Pacific University.

“They have a good film program,” she said, noting that, while she’s still not entirely sure where this path will lead, she is – as her film suggested – emotionally prepared to take the leap.

Young artists celebrated at Borland Gallery

By Melissa Wagoner Each spring the Silverton Arts Association hosts a special exhibition in the Borland Gallery. The Student Art Show, as it is known, “brings together the creativity of middle and high school students from across the Silver Falls School District, throwing a spotlight onto the young artistic voices in our community,” according to association president Michael Turner.

Open now through May 22, the show, located across from Coolidge McClaine Park, features both 2D and 3D art reviewed by artists within the SAA community who are continually amazed by the depth of talent the students’ art displays.

“As the show was being hung… I picked up piece after piece and was absolutely stunned by the vision and craft that these students are exhibiting,” Turner said.

“In a world of omnipresent screens and encroaching AI, it’s a moving testament to our desire to draw, craft, sculpt – to feel inspired, and to express ourselves.”

This year’s coveted “Best in Show” awards were presented to an eighth grade student at Silverton Middle School, Brenna Larned, for her still-life painting titled, “Bee Attractant”; to SHS sophomore Pollyanna Kirgan, for her pen and ink titled, “Calm Thai Fighter”; and to SHS senior Mia Mykisen, for her ceramic sculpture. All three will also be displayed at Lunaria Gallery during the month of June.

“The show…creates a meaningful bridge between emerging artists and the wider local arts scene…reminding us how vital it is to support and uplift this next generation of creators,” Turner said. He urged anyone interested in viewing the current show to visit the Borland Gallery Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. or Friday noon to 3 p.m.

“Come out and celebrate with us,” he said.

Marilyn Ann Terhaar

May 9, 1947 – April 13, 2026

Marilyn Ann Terhaar, aged 78, passed away on April 13, 2026, in Albany after a long illness.

After college, she worked as a nurse in hospitals in St. Louis, and the Chicago area. She pursued further education, attending UCLA where she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond “Roxy” Terhaar and Leona (Schiedler) Terhaar, and her brothers Bobby and Paul.

Marilyn is survived by her sisters, Alice Strassmaier of Hillsboro, Elizabeth Terhaar and Linda Schiller of Salem, Sister Rosemary Terhaar OSB, of Nanaimo B.C., Canada, Eileen Clark of Mount Angel, and Therese Nair of Sherwood, and many nieces and nephews.

She returned to Mt. Angel and became an active member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Silverton, where she sang in the choir and worked for years teaching the kindergarten children during mass. After her father died, she moved in with her mother to help.

Marilyn attended schools in Mount Angel, and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School. She entered the convent of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Frankfort, Illinois. She attended Marillac College in St. Louis, Missouri, and received her diploma in Nursing.

She was Director of Nursing at Silverton Hospital and later worked at Kaiser Permanente. Marilyn enjoyed monthly get-togethers with three grade school friends who had stayed close through the years. She also enjoyed family get-togethers, camping at the beach, watching movies, making art and sharing happiness.

Donald Leroy Pullen Jr., 73, of Silverton, Oregon, passed away surrounded by loved ones on April 20, 2026, after a hardfought battle with cancer.

Donald was born on Feb. 18, 1953, to Donald Leroy Pullen, Sr. and Francis Moore of Sandy, Oregon. After graduating from Sandy High School in 1971, he married Linnea Diane Cansler. They had two children, Laura and Kimberly.

He worked at many jobs around Sandy and Gresham, including Reynolds Metal Aluminum Company in Troutdale. He later married Teresa Joanne Jasper in 1980 and established a home in Rockwood and they had two children, Bridget and Cody.

In 1985 he started working at McGill and Son Nursery as a diesel mechanic until he moved his family to Silverton, Oregon.

As the founder and owner of Valley Shade Tree, Donald poured passion and dedication in this family business from

1990 until he retired in 2024.

Donald was a provider for his family and those around him with a generous heart.

His family meant more than anything to him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald, and mother, Francis. He is survived by his wife Teresa, siblings Linda Blinkmann, Pamela Maio, Craig Pullen, Terri Boothby and children Laura Johnson, Kim Unger (Peter), Bridget Brueckner (Travis), Cody Pullen (Julie) and seven grandchildren.

Don was an avid fisherman for many years, he loved football, NASCAR, golfing and camping. He also enjoyed all the adventures with his family traveling and cruising.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Silverton Area Community Aid (SACA) or the Silverton Fire Department.

Julia LaFollette Aug. 30, 1947 – Feb. 16, 2026 Julia Margaret Sybrandt was born in Woodburn, Oregon, to parents Warren and Margaret (Halter) Sybrandt. Growing up she attended St. Luke Catholic grade school, Mt. Angel Academy (freshman year), and Woodburn High School where she graduated in 1965.

She married Darrell LaFollette in 1965. After her children were partially through school, she enrolled at Chemeketa Community College and earned two degrees: office administration secretarial and legal secretarial. After graduation she worked two years with the state of Oregon, then returned to Chemeketa and worked for 21 years. While at Chemeketa, several staff came together and formed the Chemeketa Harvest Band. They sang and played German music at many different venues. The most rewarding was the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest.

After retiring, Julia and Darrell sold their Silverton home of 40 years and moved to Redmond, Oregon, where they have resided for the last 10 years until her passing at home under Hospice care.

Full speed ahead Silverton freshman is drag racing standout Kenley Pracht grew up within 15 minutes of Woodburn Dragstrip and now lives down the street from the track. And with a long run of family members being involved in the sport, it all adds up to her passion for drag racing.

“I got started in drag racing because my family has always been involved in motorsports, and I found it exciting,” she told Our Town. “Both my grandfathers, my dad, and my great uncle are drag racers.

Equestrian: Silverton and Kennedy competed in the Oregon High School Equestrian Teams state championships in Redmond. The Foxes drill team of Maytlyn Bastian, Nora Woodward, Emma Peters and Alyssa Brown-Maxwell finished fourth.

Bastian also was eighth in in-hand trail and 19th in showmanship. Kiersten Tjaarda was 14th in hunt seat equitation, an event in which Emma Peters also participated. The Foxes, coached by Kayla Phillips and Ellie Merina, scored 42 points in the OHSET’s medium division.

Kennedy, meanwhile, scored 13 points in the small division, with Sabina Nguyen tying for sixth in driving. The team of Nguyen, Reaghan Williams, Miley Navarette, Sydney Hudson and Bella Rocha finished 24th in Canadian flags. The team is coached by Jaime Hudson.

Softball/baseball: Kennedy is having banner seasons on the diamond. The baseball squad is 19-2 overall and 10-0 in Class 2A-1A’s Special District II, where the Trojans already have clinched the league title. Kennedy, the defending class runner-up, is ranked No. 1 by the OSAA and will host a home playoff game on Wednesday, May 27. The JFK softball squad also is undefeated in league with a 14-0 record and also has clinched the district title. The Trojans are ranked No. 2 by the OSAA and will open the playoffs at home on Wednesday, May 27.

Silverton, meanwhile, is in the hunt for playoff spots in both softball and baseball.

The softball Foxes are 7-4 in the MidWillamette Conference, good for third currently. The top four in the league advance to the Class 5A playoffs, which begin on Tuesday, May 26. In baseball Silverton is 8-6 in the MWC, good for fifth place. Only the top four teams receive automatic playoff bids, but Silverton’s No. 16 ranking gives the team a decent shot at an at-large berth.

Alumni watch: Former Kennedy standout Ethan Kleinschmit has moved into the No. 1 starting pitcher spot for Oregon State.

Silver Falls trails reopen after cleanup

By James Day The work to clear out downed trees and hazards from Silver Falls State Park is almost concluded and just one trail segment remains closed.

The late December windstorm wreaked havoc throughout the Cascades, with damage at popular spots such as Shellburg Falls in addition to Silver Falls.

State parks officials told Our Town that the lone trail piece that is not open is the one on the Canyon Trail that runs from Twin Falls to the Rim Trail near the North Falls Trailhead.

The trailhead and parking lot at North Falls are open and visitors can use the Rim Trail to venture toward the South Falls day-use area. Hikers currently cannot pass under North Falls.

The North Canyon Trailhead also is open and hikers can travel from the new parking lot there to the new North Falls lookout and beyond to North Falls.

No word was available regarding when the final segment will reopen and thus allow visitors to embark on the popular Trail of 10 Falls loop.

All other amenities at Silver Falls, including trails, picnic shelters and other day-use and overnight facilities, are open and ready for visitors. Park officials caution hikers on the back country trails such as the Perimeter, the Catamount, Buck Mountain and Racket Ridge that there is always a chance of downed trees, limbs, or water on those trails.

Hit-and-run death Former ER doctor sentenced to 13 months

A former Silverton Emergency Room doctor has been sentenced to 13 months in prison for leaving the scene of a wreck that killed a Woodburn man in 2024.

Kenneth John Kolarsky, 59, of Portland, was sentenced May 12 in Marion County Circuit Court after pleading guilty April 24 to attempted failure to perform duties of driver to injured persons.

Kolarsky admitted to being behind the wheel of an SUV that fatally struck Nicolas Hernandez Mendoza, 44, in Woodburn on Dec. 26, 2024.

Salem teen dead in single-car crash A Salem teenager has died in a singlevehicle collision outside Silver Falls State Park. Initial investigation shows speed may have been a factor.

On April 29 around 1:52 a.m., a Subaru WRX was traveling southbound on Highway 214 around milepost 22, near the park’s South Viewpoint, when the vehicle left the roadway.

The Subaru struck a tree, continued down an embankment, came to rest and caught fire, according to an April 30 news release

by Oregon State Police.

The driver, Adrian Ramos Monroy, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger, 24, of Salem, was lifeflighted with serious injuries.

The highway was impacted for roughly five hours during investigation of the crash, said OSP. Assisting agencies included Drakes Crossing Rural Fire Protection District, Stayton Fire District and ODOT. The release said “a high rate of speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash.”

Kolarsky, on his way to a shift in the ER at Legacy Silverton Hospital, failed to stop after the collision. Since Kolarsky’s arrest May 17, 2025, he is no longer employed at the hospital.

criminal history and may have been experiencing medical distress at the time. According to a sentencing memo filed May 1, Kolarsky was diagnosed with severe iron deficiency that may have resulted in cognitive impairment including inattention and delirium during the collision.

During sentencing, prosecutors did not fault Kolarsky for the collision, saying Hernandez Mendoza was wearing dark clothing at night in the rain. They told Judge Courtland Geyer if Kolarsky had not fled the scene he would not have been charged.

Geyer said, because of Kolarsky’s lack of a criminal history, a lower sentence was justified and imposed 13 months, with eligibility for sentence-reducing programs and alternative incarceration.

Prosecutors asked for a 16- to 18-month sentence unless Geyer found mitigating circumstances.

Geyer also imposed three years of post-prison supervision, a $200 fine and a one-year driver’s license suspension.

A Slice of the Pie

The next chapter Storytime’s beloved Miss Shelly retires When Holly Byrum moved to Silverton with her husband and a toddler in 2017, they didn’t know anyone in town. But then Byrum discovered the Silver Falls Library’s Storytime – led by Youth Services Librarian Shelly Brown – and everything changed.

“Storytime at the library with Miss Shelly was a welcome opportunity to meet our neighbors,” Byrum recalled. “Miss Shelly built community through books, bubbles, and songs.”

Originally hired for a part-time position in 1998, Brown worked in both the Circulation and Adult Services Departments, but she really discovered her place when she began working in Youth Services, developing youth programs and working with kids.

“She took early literacy seriously,” fellow youth librarian Dena Chaffin said. “She wanted to make sure that children loved to read and loved the library. As an extension of that, they also loved her....”

She also put real thought into the experiences she cultivated, even taking classes on the fundamentals of early literacy

“Patrons may not have realized it, but every storytime was created around the building blocks of reading which are vocabulary building, print awareness, letter recognition, narrative skills, and phonological (sound) awareness,” library director Christy Davis said. “It looks simple, but each book and activity and song chosen is for the purpose of developing these critical skills.”

Having worked in the library for 28 years, on April 30 Brown retired to spend more time with her partner, children, grandchildren and beloved dog.

But literacy was only one component of what Brown ultimately became known for.

Her real legacy is the memories children and their caregivers still hold dear.

There is no doubt Brown’s influence will have an impact for years to come.

You’ve set me up for success, more than you may ever see, with every lesson, every moment, you’ve left a part of you in me. You made the days brighter, the hard ones feel light, the kids all adore you – you make everything feel just right. So, while this isn’t easy, and I will miss you every day, I’m grateful for the time we had in every single way. There can only be one Shelly, you are simply the best – I’m so grateful I got to work with you, now take some time and rest…”
