Rates go up The Silverton City Council voted unanimously on April 5 to approve rate increases for sewer, water and storm drainage.

Silverton City Manager Bob Willoughby said the rate increases are needed to address significant issues withe the city’s infrastructure.

On Facebook, City Councilor Jim Sears shared he believes the rate increases were desperately needed.

The rates will go into effect July 1. The average residential customer will see an increase of $1.70 for sewer; $1.72 for water and $2 for stormwater for a total of a $5.42 increase.

“The city’s infrastructure is in dire need of improvements and the city has been putting them off for many years in an effort to keep the utility rates down.

It appears that it has caught up with us,” he said, adding a study looked at what it would cost to improve the city’s infrastructure.

Willoughby said he hopes the citizens will understand the council voted to increase rates now so the problems with the water, sewer and storm water systems can begin to be addressed, instead of higher costs later.

“The study showed we have a large need to fund in the future. Thus we will need to continue to evaluate our city provided utilities, with the understanding that the rates will need to continue to be adjusted to address these future needs,” he wrote.

“We didn’t want to reach a point where we had no choice but to fix it. We have 80-year-old water lines and several water lines that leak,” he said. “Our water plant is 40 years old and most water plants are 25 to 30 years old. We have concerns

Sex-trafficking talk April 30 When Esther Craig started the Facebook page “County Line Safety Compass” after two domestic-related homicides last summer, she was surprised by the response.

“I had people calling me, sending me messages and even knocking on my door in the middle of the night saying they had a friend they were concerned about,” Craig said. “They were seeking information about what to do and how to help.”

Craig has spend a decade as a victims advocate for sexual assault survivors.

She founded the first advocacy team to respond in an emergency alongside the FBI, local law enforcement and child welfare. It is part of a multidisciplinary model of intervention for child sex-trafficking victims. Although she retired from her paid work to be a mom, working with local agencies she has seen a need for her expertise.

Craig and Kirstin Heydel of the Center of Hope and Safety in Salem will be

partnering with SACA to present a child sex-trafficking awareness presentation Thursday, April 30, 6:30 p.m. at Silverton High School. This event is open to the public. Content may be graphic so parental discretion is advised.

April is Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Awareness Month.

In starting County Line Safety Compass, Craig discovered the depth of the need for assistance for victims of domestic and sexual crimes. Calling herself a navigator, Craig said County Line is becoming a project partner with SACA, with volunteers putting victims in touch with resources.

“This partnership is a testament to SACA’s willingness to open its arms and embrace creative ways to serve its community,” Craig said. The project will also serve Mount Angel residents with the “priority goal making sure that no one, no matter how rural, feels isolated from advocacy services.”

Silverton mom’s night job is as a private investigator finding missing persons, interviewing witnesses and conducting research.

Silverton resident Lori Grimmer was in plain sight, sitting in her car as she watched a man put up the Christmas lights on his home.

The man even looked her way and waved, perhaps assuming she was just a local mom chatting on her phone.

Little did he know she was hired to film him.

“I am a mom to a 3-year-old and 4-year-old by day and a private investigator by night,” Grimmer said.

She didn’t plan on a life of visiting prisons to interview criminals or blending in during a stake out.

“I was working with an attorney on a personal injury case and the man was supposed to be so injured that he was bed ridden,” she said.

The fact she’s 5-foot-3, flashes a warm and welcoming smile, has an air of complete confidence and can dress the part she needs to play has allowed her to obtain information others can’t get. She has built a reputation for being able to obtain confessions or admissions of guilt.

Grimmer is the owner of Grimmer Investigations, a private investigation company whose services include surveillance, skip tracing, serving legal documents,

Grimmer, 39, went to Western Oregon University to be a teacher.

“My senior year, I began working for a lawyer and one thing led to another from being a paralegal to working as legislative assistant for lobbyists to becoming certified as a private investigator,” she said. “I wanted a job that would allow me to travel.”

A licensed and bonded private investigator, Grimmer has worked on civil and criminal cases for attorneys in seven Oregon counties. She specializes in pre-trial investigations.

Her secret to securing information is treating the people she interviews with respect. She has learned a friendly and sincere smile and listening intently to the person makes the information flow freely in many cases.

“I think the fact that I am in no way intimidating allows me to relate to someone whether they are 12 or 60 years old,” Grimmer said. “I have done this long enough that I do my homework before I get myself into any situation.”

As an advocate she also can direct clients to attorneys who specialize in the legal help they are seeking.

Before becoming a mom, Grimmer said she was quite busy with work, especially in Portland. She scaled back on her case loads once her kids were born, but now is ready to take on more.

Admitting she’s an “adrenaline junkie,” Grimmer said she couldn’t imagine a job where she does basically the same thing day in and day out.

Her profession allows her to have a good balance of home and work, she said, adding she’s grateful to her family for helping care for her kids.

“I usually do my paperwork when the kids are home or at school and two nights a week do other work,” she

What’s old is new as shoppers seek to reuse old things. Discovering treasures at antique and thrift shops is a way of recycling.

Tammy Davis, an avid antique collector since childhood, kept driving by the old feed store in Mount Angel, envisioning an antique mall. The building – dating back at least to the 1920s – had been vacant 14 years. Then she heard talk of it being torn down. She took the leap, repurposing the building, fulfilling the dream and opening a shop in one fell swoop. It helped, too, that the 4,500-square-foot space for antique vendors was full before it opened

When Chuck Tauer retired as a professor

‘Old’ things get a second life in new hands

at Oklahoma State University, he wondered what a retired geneticist could do. His answer was to open a bookstore in Silverton. The Tauers chose Oregon because Chuck had once worked for the Forest Service, and Silverton specifically because of the excellent school system.

Although the store carries new and used books, Tauer said that they sell mostly used books. Browsing the shelves reveals everything from childhood favorites to used copies of the latest thrillers.

and her business partner Milla Nelson said North Star is a community of likeminded antique lovers. The shop is made up of many mini stores each stocked and merchandised by independent dealers.

For Phillips, the love of antiques came gradually. “You like something old and you find something old. Pretty soon everything in your house is old,” she said.

“I do see a trend in repurposing, that’s just all over the United States, especially with young girls. We have people who buy parts for things they’re making; prisms, old wooden crates, canning jars with zinc lids. They just look on Pinterest then find things here that they’re looking for,” Phillips said. “They want something unique for their homes.”

Phillips sees many items purchased as wedding decorations. There’s also been an upswing in the sale of tea cups and long gloves due to success of the television series Downton Abbey.

Owner Kathy Kvenbo’s passion is restoring and repurposing furniture.

“This is not a money-making business.

I love this. Although I do work my tail off,” Kvenbo said. “I started decorating my room when I was 5 years old. I’ve always been an artist.”

Kvenbo, who moved with her husband Greg and two children from California, came to Silverton 25 years ago.

“I came to visit my in-laws on the week of Homer Davenport and fell in love. I thought, I could retire here,” Kvenbo said.

She finally realized her dream, settling down and purchasing the former Mayberry’s Antiques. The husband and wife team restores items from purchases at auctions and yard sales.

“Doors, windows, broken windows, broken furniture; I’ll slap a coat of paint on it. I love to crackle and I love to shabby,” Kvenbo said. “I know how to restore furniture.”

“They don’t buy things to look at, they buy things to use,” Kvenbo said.

It all started with a really big garage sale.

Three years ago the Silverton Senior Center decided to host a fundraiser in the garage of Dave Potter of Potter’s Auto Specialists. What began as one sale turned into the Silverton Senior Center Thrift Store, with the proceeds going toward the cost of running the center.

Cock understands the delight of a thrift store find, having been a thrift store shopper herself since childhood.

“Especially sewing items, I really had to lean toward thrift stores,” she said.

“There’s all kinds of things that people are on the hunt for, especially tourists,” Cock said. “We’ve actually sold suitcases to transport it back home.”

Ed Webb, retired from the military and in 2013 got to work making his wife Robin’s dreams come true. Robin, a yard sale guru used to wow Ed with the amount of money she could bring in on a weekend in their front yard. So, when he saw the little red building beside the creek in Silverton, he jumped at the chance to give her a permanent storefront. Somewhere in Time was born.

“This is a passion for her. It’s a kind of dream,” Webb said. The Webbs have found furniture, which they often get from Robin’s father in Grants Pass, to be their biggest seller.

“A lot of it we paint and fix up. We take it and clean it up. My wife’s the mastermind behind it all. She never ceases to amaze me,” Webb said.

The Red Bench, 205 N. Water, Silverton Donna Snyder is “all about recycling and reusing and not throwing stuff out.”

The owner of The Red Bench for the past 10 years, Snyder has been interested in antiques since she was a little girl.

“I would go garage sailing with my mom and my grandma. I saw how much further your money would go,” she said.

Snyder sells mostly furniture herself, but leases out spots within the store to other vendors. Snyder sees a big trend in the repurposing of old items in new ways.

“They reuse old pottery like Fiesta ware,” she said. “They’re buying the vintage mason jars. They use those for weddings.”

Snyder’s favorite idea, however, is the refinishing of old maple furniture.

“It’s a lot of physical work but any of that shabby chic finish is just hot right now,” she said.

Snyder is seeing a lot of customers coming into Silverton looking for antiques.

The city has gained a following from Washington and Portland.

Rebecca Axmaker is doing business a little differently at The Trunk. Selling gently worn men’s, women’s and children’s clothing size 6X and up, Axmaker does not take items on consignment but rather offers in-store credit.

“I assess the clothes and give them 30 percent credit on the floor for the stuff that I choose to sell,” Axmaker said.

The Trunk inhabits a small space, so Axmaker limits the number of items that can be donated at one time to 20,. She only takes items in season and tries to maintain a range of sizes.

“I don’t want to have the same size of everything in my store. I have all different sizes of shoppers. And it has to pass my cute meter,” she said. Her biggest sellers are jeans and shoes.

“There’s one lady who does repurposing of Harley Davidson attire and she came in and bought lace,” Axmaker said. “I’m a recycler. It’s fun to see people come back in wearing the clothes that they bought.”

Center Stage Director Don Kelley said he has made it a point to let the audience know they are watching a story about the Passion play recounting the Holy Week from Palm Sunday to the Crucifixion.

Jesus Christ Superstar is the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage.

Jesus Christ Superstar Kelley said he makes it quite clear to his audience that this is a story – not the telling of the scriptural event. By making the set look like a warehouse with pallets ranging in height from 2 to 8-feet tall, the musical begins with the actors arriving on stage and pulling their costumes – jeans, T-shirts, suits and ties and hoodies – from a costume rack.

Because he has deep respect for the scriptural story, Kelley said it is important for him to convey to his audience this is a story that is being told from each actor’s point of view.

“I want people to know these are actors.

The scriptural story is very sacred and important to me. This story is based on the scriptures and it is a story told by a group of people telling the story from their perspective,” Kelley said.

By relaying the story with music and dance, Kelley said he hopes the audience will gain new insights.

He said he thinks a lot of characters in the story are misunderstood. Kelley added the show raises questions that were always there, such as what did Judas really know?

“Was it possible for Jesus to select a bad person as a disciple? Was Judas innately bad or playing the part he had to play,” Kelley said.

By playing the role of Judas, Greg Hiltz said he has a different perspective now.

“He was used to play a part,” Hiltz said.

“He was selected to betray Jesus. He realized what he had done and he paid the price for it.”

He hopes the audience will see is how much the cast has enjoyed working on the musical. “There is great camaraderie amongst the cast,” Hiltz said.

The last play Joe Huang was in was Oliver when he was in the third grade.

“I was mildly shocked I was cast as Jesus,” he said. “The story is one that has been told and retold. Regardless of your religious beliefs or what you think of this particular story, this story is not without controversy. Letters to the editor Study board candidates In the coming weeks, you are sure to hear many candidates for the Silver Falls School District Board of Directors claim their goal is to promote unity within the district.

One of those candidates will be Todd White who is running in Zone 6.

The problem is Mr. White has a history on social media such as Facebook of smearing the district, propagating outrageous conspiracy theories, and doing more than any other person I am aware of to draw divisions among the residents of the district.

On March 31, 2015, Mr. White wrote, “Silverton people seem to harbor a lot of resentment for the rural voters. As long as that BS thinking is allowed to continue, there will always be a rift....Get over yourselves.”

This is just one sad example of Mr. White’s incendiary rhetoric on Facebook.

This is not the type of thinking that will unite people to work towards a common goal.

Simply put, Todd White is unfit to serve as a board member in the Silver Falls School District. I would also question the judgment of any candidate who chooses to align with him.

Luckily, we have an alternative. DaNette Wernette is a write in candidate for Zone 6. We are lucky to have a candidate as qualified as Mrs. Wernette.

Her qualifications include an education and work history that focuses on the needs of children. DaNette Wernette is both respectful of those she encounters, and is respectable as a professional woman. This is an easy choice. Write in DaNette Wernette for Zone 6.

“All of us are very excited about having this meet on our home track and we are already working hard to make this a great meet for all the competitors,” veteran Trojans Coach Steve Ritchie said.

This year marks the first time Kennedy has hosted the district meet in Ritchie’s tenure.

“Our new track and field event venues are a huge improvement and it will be great to have district right here. Hopefully, we’ll get a lot of Kennedy students and fans there providing that extra boost for our athletes,” Ritchie said.

The Trojans’ girls squad is coming off a Class 2A state title, the boys team took second at districts last year and Ritchie reports a record 48 athletes on the two squads.

Kennedy returns a strong veteran core from that girls state title team. Loghan Sprauer won the 100, 200 and 400 while finishing third in the high jump. Lauren Stokley was third in the 3,000 and Mia Grosjacques took fourth in the 100 hurdles despite an injured hip. The three seniors will be assisted by junior Taylor Brown (sixth in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump) and freshman Kaylin Cantu, who starred for Kennedy’s cross country team in the fall.

“We believe we’ll be in contention at district as well as state,” Ritchie said.

Standouts on the boys squad include long jumper Bishop Mitchell, distance runners Adrian Parra and Noe Jines and throwers David Wright and Jacob Lopez.

“We have good depth and a lot of boys who can vie for individual titles (at districts),” Ritchie said.

Meanwhile, at Silverton, the Foxes’ boys and girls squads are off to 2-0 starts in dual meets.

“The girls team is showing signs of being very good,” Coach Erik Cross said.

“We had a lot of questions to answer and holes to fill on the boys side coming into the season. However, several have stepped up into leadership roles and have gotten better each week.” Top performers on the girls team include Cheyenne Partlow, who leads Class 5A in the shot

put (39-8 3/4) and Allyson Ridling, tops in 5A in the 300 hurdles (47.59).

In addition Maddie Fuhrman leads the Mid-Willamette Conference in the 800 (2:21.45) and 3,000 (10:39.10) and ranks second in the 400 (62.99) and 1,500 (4:58.28).

Top performers on the boys team include vaulters Spencer Hately (12-7) and Lucas Wilson (12-1), who are ranked 1-2 in the MWC in the event. In addition, the Foxes’ 400 relay squad of Colton Harle, Travis Sinn, Austin Haskett and Brock Rogers leads the league with a 44.71 clocking. Robbie LeParc has been scoring points in races from 400 meters to 3,000.

Here is an update on local college athletes for the winter season: Zach Gengler (Silverton), a sophomore guard at Portland State, averaged 4.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game for the Vikings.

Gengler played in 22 games and started 12. Toby Roth (Silverton), a sophomore guard at Corban, averaged 7.5 points per game for the Warriors. Roth led the team in steals with 27 and was third on the squad in assists (84). He dished off nine assists Dec. 27 against New Hope to establish a team high in the category for the season. Morgan Anderson (Silverton), an Oregon State sophomore, had the top mile mark (4:47.32) and the second-best 800 mark (2:15.88) in the indoor season. The marks rank Anderson second in both races on the OSU all-time indoor list. Anderson also has turned in a 2:12.05 800 and a 4:30.42 1,500 in the early stages of the outdoor campaign.

Not Mayberry

With the NCAA Men’s Basketball champion now decided (Duke over Wisconsin, 68-63), I have some vivid memories of March Madness, great games, huge upsets, and an unexpected meeting of the coach who led Duke to its fifth title.

I was in line to a Las Vegas show with a business partner several years ago, and turned around. Immediately behind me was Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his wife, Mickie, waiting for the line to move. Having had the autograph door figuratively slammed in my face by one Willie Mays in 1960, I have learned that fame has to be as hard on the celebrity as it is on those who adore them.

I could have asked the man who will likely go down in history as the greatest, and perhaps classiest basketball coach of all time for an autograph. But it just didn’t feel right. The guy was out for a night with his wife and deserved to be left alone. So I smiled and turned away.

But it didn’t work out that way. A nerdy young man of about 20 yelled across the room, “Coach K, Coach K.” The coach smiled and waved, but here came the young man seeking an autograph. After he left, I turned around and said, “I bet that gets real old?” He laughed and said, “I really don’t mind. The fans are so important to the game.” He could have dropped the discussion but instead asked us, “Where are you from?” We told him Portland and he chuckled rather quietly to himself then said, “We stole a good one from you.” I replied, “Yes, I know you did. That Mike Dunleavy kid is outstanding and would have looked much better in a Beaver uniform.”

He and his wife laughed, and we talked for a few more minutes about the Blazers, Mike Jrs. dad, Blazers head coach at the time, and he was so pleasant, unassuming, and easy to talk to. After the show, as we walked out, he asked if we had enjoyed the show (Lord of the Dance).

I said we did, and told him, rather boldly, “Hey Coach.

If that Dunleavy kid doesn’t work out, could you send him to Corvallis?” He cracked up and said, “I think he’s gonna be just fine.” A humble man, a genuinely nice man, and a spectacular human being. I ought to give Willie his number.

The musical Jesus Christ, Superstar is coming to Silverton High School by way of Center Stage April 24 and 25, and May 1-3. It is going to be incredible. Made famous in the early 1970s, the rock musical is a contemporized but accurate telling of Christ’s final days on Earth.

Except for one rather suspect priest that slightly resembles a local writer of limited musical talent, the cast is absolutely amazing. Greg Hiltz is remarkable as Judas, and Tim Kelley as King Herod is sure to make your sides split with laughter. Two Silverton Health powerhouses, Dr. Joseph Huang as Jesus, and Sarah Fronza as Mary Magdalene, are dynamic both together and impressive in the play’s well-known solos. It is worth the price of admission, with most proceeds going to help the marching band’s quest to get new band uniforms before the start of the new school year. This is a must-see event

on your spring calendar.

Want to see local politics at its best and worst? Keep an eye on the Silver Falls School Board election on May 19. The behind the scenes maneuverings are quite entertaining as one group launches an aggressive campaign to commandeer the school board voting and another has an aggressive campaign to stop them by getting their candidates, whether already on the ballot or write-ins, elected. This is not Mayberry, anymore, folks, with the endearing Sheriff Taylor, loveable goofball Barney Fife, and Aunt Bea in her Sunday-Go-ToMeeting Clothes. Please do your homework and if you don’t see the candidate you like, write-in someone who you think will best represent your interests. The Silver Falls School District has real issues and real opportunities before it, and it will take real candidates who understand the value of working for the greater good, not with hidden agendas to take us back to the 1950s where Ward Cleaver reigned supreme as “The Beaver’s” perfect but fictitious dad.
