Folk Food Fest
Tasty Treats, Good Causes By James Day
Last year’s Oktoberfest program featured the headline “Eat. Drink. Polka.” Please note that “eat” was listed first. Let’s face it, getting something to eat is one of the great passions of Oktoberfest visitors. Whether it’s a classic sausage on a stick, the always-delectible Berliner sandwich, those savory-smelling cinnamon rolls or waiting in line for the soft-serve ice cream, the variety keeps festival-goers coming back. It also keeps festival organizers working to support the folks running the non-profit food booths and keeping the “food map” in balance.
Jim Kinghorn photos
“It is a big challenge,” said Chris Hoy, the festival’s director of food booths. “All of us at Oktoberfest, from the president to the pouring crew, are all volunteers. We are all donating our time to support Oktoberfest’s primary mission of supporting non-profits. “I am lucky in that I get to do so in a more tangible way than other positions by working with non-profit groups directly. I am responsible for organizing them on the map based on many factors, mainly menu and seniority, making sure they all have water, power, and gray water tanks, maintaining a contact list for each group and getting them registered with the festival, coordinating with the police, fire department, and health department, communicating any news or changes with booth leads, and many other jobs.” Hoy added that “we want to have as much German food as possible and then with the remainder I like to see a mixture of food that reflects the culture of our community. “I try to only have duplicate menu items if they are popular enough that groups aren’t cannibalizing sales of one another. Then I try to keep them apart on the map. I also like to have a good variety of low cost one-handed food items, full meals, snacks, drinks, and desserts.” Gary Grassman, the festival’s director of downtown operations, expressed the need that during the four-day festival it’s vitally important that the food options be available during the event’s entire run. Oktoberfest has implemented a new program to help nonprofits get and maintain a food booth. Gary supervises an innovative grant program that helps keep the food booths operating. “It’s a program that I started after watching many food 6 • Sept. 17 - 20, 2026
Mt. Angel Oktoberfest
Mt. Angel Publishing, Inc.
booths financially struggle to keep their booths upgraded and meet current fire and food safety regulations,” Grassman said. “To accomplish this the board has put money in a dedicated Food Booth fund.” The food booths then apply for the grant, which Grassman said “can be used for cosmetic upgrades to the booth, fire suppression systems that are required for indoor cooking, and other essentials. “Keeping our Bavarian themed exteriors is a requirement and therefore a priority. Building a booth with a Bavarian facade can be costly. The Bavarian theme is important and that’s what separates us from food trucks.” Oktoberfest doesn’t want it to be a financial hardship for a group to start, and this program is working well. Mt. Angel Oktoberfest is a huge fundraiser for these groups. For some it is their only fundraiser. There are selections from 40 food booths to choose from. Everyone can find something delicious, with the added benefit that they are supporting the good works of a nonprofit. Grassman noted that onion rings and cabbage rolls will be back at the 2026 Oktoberfest. If you missed these two last year, you are in luck! Wanting to make some early choices or find the food you
have been waiting for all year? Check out the menus and map on page 24 to plan your journey.
Visit Mt. Angel and experience Oregon’s Bavarian village! Enjoy exceptional dining, unique shopping, exciting festivals, beautiful scenery, and warm hospitality in a community you’ll want to visit again and again.

The crowd is on its feet, clapping and smiling, the musicians respond by calling for more... What’s this? The Weingarten! Whether you want to be inside near the stage at one of the classic Oktoberfest tables or out in the pFriem Prost Haus immediately adjacent, there is easy access to food, beverage, music and more! This is a WiFi hotspot. Thank you to our sponsor - Roth’s Fresh Markets.

Our ATTRACTIONS –MUSIC
Jim Kinghorn
CHARDON POLKA BAND
The “punks of polka” from Ohio return to Mount Angel, a fan favorite since their terrific debut in 2017. Their up beat music and great fun old favorites are delivered in a not so traditional style as polkas sometimes “morph.” Comedic oddball favorites and bizarre audience participation songs are to be expected!
DIE SCHLAUBERGER (dSb)
Festival-goers across the nation have a love affair going on with America’s number one German Band, die Schlauberger. This band is a powerhouse of musical expertise and expends enough energy to light up energetic Oktoberfest crowds. From the moment they step on stage until they have wrung the final note, die Schlauberger has the audience up and dancing.
EUROPEAN TAKE-OUT BAND
The band is grown from German, Slovenian and Norwegian roots. Members have been entertaining audiences for years with accordians, bass guitar, drums and vocals. They make the Street Dance a party open to everyone.
CHARDON POLKA BAND
Alex Meixner is dedicated to the vibrant world of polka music. His playing styles blend into pop, funk, jazz as well as polka. It’s not just energetic performances; it’s about providing positive experiences that unite communities to celebrate history, culture and good times. He grew up in a family of professional musicians, the third generation of their Austrian family band. He recorded with Jack Black for The Polka King, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. Alex’s work has been featured in commercials for Ford Trucks and on the soundtracks for Moonshiners on the Discovery Network. Alex performs styles from Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Mexico, Poland and America, infusing them with a modern twist. In 2022, he was inducted into the International Polka Association Hall of Fame.

The band includes Bruce Henczel – drums, marimba, viola, vocals; Alexander Flock – guitar and vocals; and Jim Hopson – trombone, tuba, alphorn, bass guitar and vocals. With a diverse and eclectic repertoire, the S-Bahn specializes in Oktoberfests (German) and Malankas (Ukranian).
THE GORDANAIRS
The Gordanairs are back, bringing their unique blend of Old World music and dance. Whether by accordian or German slap dancing, they light up the venue. They hail from British Columbia and have spent decades recording and performing traditional German music, often pieces composed or arranged by leader Gordon Groening.

Our HERITAGE
Oktoberfest Joy: Our Special Fountain Jim Kinghorn
“Oktoberfest Joy,” is represented by the bronze Bavarian children dancing above the fountain at the crossroads of Hwy 214 and Main and Church streets in Mount Angel. The fountain was unveiled and presented to the community on Sept. 13, 1998. To help the sculptor, the late Jerry Joslin, create the statue, former Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce President Connie Lauzon worked with Marilyn Hall to make authentic Bavarian costumes to put on the dancers. They carefully sought out material that would burn away in the bronzing process. They fashioned blouses and aprons to appropriate size and gathered felt, buttons, leather lederhosen and suspenders with plastic buckles. The hat the boy holds was that of the late Fr. Emmanuel Clark, OSB, the St. Mary’s parish priest who served as chaplain on the Oktoberfest Board for 12 years.
Die Maibaum: Our Tree of Trades A Symbol of Community, the Maibaum is a decorated “Tree of Trades” displaying the symbols of businesses, services and skills practiced by the people who call Mount Angel home. The lowest two branches speak of the spiritual and intellectual foundations of our community, the parish church and village school. The top branch on the right is a golfer, though not a trade, golf is a skill practiced by many of Mount Angel’s retired citizens. The pole is painted in a blue and white spiral, the colors of Bavaria. Maibaum are a common sight in villages across Bavaria.
Die Früchtsäule: Meet Me at The Harvest Monument For many Mount Angel Oktoberfest-goers the place to meet is at die Früchtsäule, the Harvest Monument. Designed on a spcial theme each year, the monolith at the center of village is decorated with beans, seeds, herbs and grains. Artists paint on plywood, then covers pictures with nature’s bounty. If your party gets separated, it’s a great place to reunite.

Mt. Angel Oktoberfest
Mt. Angel Publishing, Inc.
Oktoberfest from Munich to Mt. Angel The grandfather of all German Oktoberfests originated when a crown prince married his princess. The place was Munich, a beautiful city along the Isar River. In 1810 Princess Therese married Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig. The festival began as a wedding celebration. As part of the entertainment a horse race was staged for 40,000 enthusiasts from all over Bavaria. Such was the success of the party that after the wedding the meadow was named the Theresienwiese in honor of the princess. At the final banquet, a toast was made in honor of the bride and the decision was made that the festival should take place the following year to commenorate the event. Thus the Munich Oktoberfest became a tradition. Over the years other traditions were added – a opening parade, scores of brass bands dressed in lederhosen, and hearty waitresses in dirndls able to carry a half dozen liter beer steins in each hand. Today the Munich Oktoberfest comes alive when the clock of St. Peter’s Church strikes noon. The burgermeister enters the beer tent, taps the first cask and quaffs the first stein. Mt. Angel’s great Oktoberfest is not nearly as large as Munich’s, but you will find happy, bustling crowds and lots of merrymaking. In many respects, the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest more closely
resembles a traditional German village festival. Even in the smaller villages you will find a group of enthusiastic citizens – all volunteers – making it happen. In Mt. Angel, more than 7,500 volunteers are involved! The proceeds from Oktoberfest are used for the public good. The board has distributed more than $4 million to other non-profits since its inception. That money does not include the funds earned by the non-profit food booths each year! Traditions at the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest include meeting at the Harvest Monument in the center of the village; lively music in the Biergarten, Weingarten, Alpinegarten, Hopfengarten and Prostgarten; joining in the Chicken Dance at the Village Bandstand; and feasting from the food booths lining the village streets. Children have a wonderful time in the free Kindergarten on the grounds surrounding St. Mary’s Elementary School, and nearby adults browse through the arts and drafts show or on Saturday and Sunday check out the Cruz-n Car Show. One of the best things about the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest is the knowledge that you can have a wonderful time while helping many good causes. It is a celebration that allows us to give thanks for the past year’s crops and blessings and share the joy of the occasion.

Our HERITAGE

Our Glockenspiel
While having fun at Mount Angel Oktoberfest, you have an opportunity to view what might be our nation’s tallest musical animated Glockenspiel. Located in the heart of the village, it springs into action during Oktoberfest on the hour from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The bells toll, the music begins, and beautifully carved figures begin a circular jouney, sharing our history. These figures – some carved by local volunteers – were designed to depict important local events and people. The Kalapuya Brave was one of many natives who climbed the butte (Abbey Hill) to pray, at “Tapalamaho” or “dwelling place of the Great Spirit”. Robert and Katrina Zollner, two of the earliest settlers, arrived here in 1867 with eight other German families. Robert, with only 25 cents to his name, was granted a homestead of 220 acres. Robert and Katrina are ancestors of the festival’s own Z-Musikmakers, famous for their performances in the Biergarten.
JIM KINGHORN
Mathias Butsch arrived in 1878. He is dubbed “the father of Mount Angel” because he was instrumental in building the first church, railroad station, and general store. Most significantly, he is credited with inviting the Benedictine Monks to establish their monastery here. Prior Adelhelm Odermatt arrived in 1881. The monastery was built on the butte that is now known as Abbey Hill – ancient Tapalamoho. Fr. Adelhelm came from Engelberg in Switzerland, and suggested the town be called “Mount Angel”, the English version of Engelberg. Sister Bernadine Wachter and her sisters came here in 1882 from the Swiss Convent of Maria Rickenback. Sister Bernadine became the first Prioress of the Benedictine Queen of Angels monastery and the school. Papa Oom-Pah, with his rosy cheeks, flowing mustache, checkered shirt, lederhosen and playing his big tuba, came along to be the symbol representing Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest, first formed in 1966. He is a true representative of the fun and excitement of the Northwest’s best loved Bavarian folk festival. The grand finale happens on the highest level of the tower. The shutters open and we look to our future. A boy and a girl, dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes, play on a garden swing while singing the song Edelweiss, sung by Mount Angel’s own school children.

Oktoberfest Encourages Moderation The highly quaffable beers of Bavaria are brewed according to a law that has been in effect for over 500 years. The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, enacted by Duke Wilhelm IV, is still in force today, making it the oldest consumer protection law in the world. All the beers from Germany sold at the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest are still brewed in accordance with Das Bayrische Reinheitgebot (Bavarian Purity Law). No wonder they’re of superior quality! Mt. Angel Oktoberfest and its distributors encourage everyone to drink responsibly. The fine beverages and wines at our festival are best consumed in moderation and savored for their flavor. We applaud festival goers who drink responsibly and use a designated driver. DESIGNATED DRIVERS pledge not to drink alcoholic
beverages while at the festival and to provide safe transportation for their friends in the group. All Designated Drivers receive a wristband and soft drinks. All participants must be 21 or older with a driver’s license. Patrons not consuming alcohol have the opportunity to sign up as an official Designated Driver from 5 p.m. until closing each day of the festival in the Alpinegarten, Biergarten and Weingarten. NON-ALCOHOLIC BEERS are available in every venue. GET A SAFE RIDE HOME – If you don’t have a designated driver and find that you have passed the point where you can safely drive home, take advantage of these options: onsite taxis usually found in front of the Biergarten, or arrange for a Lyft. Load your app, the address of the Biergarten in the Mt. Angel Community Festhalle is 500 Wilco Hwy NE. and
load your home address.
Know your limit and DON’T DRINK and DRIVE.
Under new ownership!
