EAT! DRINK! POLKA!
Welcome to the 59th annual Mt. Angel Oktoberfest, a place to make great memories and celebrate life with family and friends.
The festival is a tribute to the community’s heritage. Nine German families were early settlers and brought a touch of Bavaria to Oregon.
Today the children of the community share that heritage with others by joining in the Oktoberfest Dance Troupe. You can see them perform daily at noon near the Village Bandstand, plus Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
It’s one of the ways we keep our traditions alive and vibrant.
We hope you’ll enjoy your time with us!
Enjoy the food -- so many great choices provided by area non-profits and their hard-working volunteers!
Enjoy the beverages -- so many tasty choices. Remember you can take advantage of our designated driver program (details page 46).
Enjoy the dancing and music! Award-winning musicians take to our stages each year with a variety of styles and specialties. There’s sure to be space and time on the dance floor for you.
Have a wonderful time today -- and make plans to come back and join us for the 60th Mt. Angel Oktoberfest Sept. 11 - 14, 2025.
Celebrate With Us!

What’s a festival without music?
Whether your taste runs to sacred, traditional folk, or Polka rock, there’s a venue with musicians sure to please at Mt. Angel’s Oktoberfest.
New to the festival this year is Alex Meixner & Band, a Grammynominated performer, he achieved a Lifetime Achievement induction into the International Polka Association Hall of Fame.
Performance schedules for venues and times that start on page 20.
MUSIC! MUSIC! Everywhere!
ALEX MEIXNER & BAND
Alex Meixner is dedicated to the vibrant world of polka music. His playing styles blend into pop, funk, jazz as well as polka. It’s not just energetic performances; it’s about providing positive experiences that unite communities to celebrate history, culture and good times.
His passion for music was ignited early, growing up in a family of professional musicians, the third generation of their Austrian family band.
CHARDON POLKA BAND
He recorded with Jack Black for The Polka King, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. Alex’s work has been featured in commercials for Ford Trucks and on the soundtracks for Moonshiners on the Discovery Network.
Alex performs styles from Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Mexico, Poland and America, infusing them with a modern twist. In 2022, he was inducted into the International Polka Association Hall of Fame.
ALPINE ECHOES
The Alpine Echoes Band plays music for happy occasions, specializing in German and Scandinavian music. Of course, no party is complete without the Chicken Dance! Orchestration includes accordion, drums, flute, tuba, cowbells, bass, trumpet and vocals.
The “punks of polka” from Ohio return to Mount Angel, a fan favorite since their terrific debut in 2017. Their up beat music and great fun old favorites are delivered in a not so traditional style as polkas sometimes “morph.” Comedic oddball favorites and bizarre audience participation songs are to be expected!
DIE SCHLAUBERGER (dSB)
Festival-goers across the nation have a love affair going on with America’s number one German Band, die Schlauberger. This band is a powerhouse of musical expertise and expends enough energy to light up energetic Oktoberfest crowds. From the moment they step on stage until they have wrung the final note, die Schlauberger has the audience up and dancing.
EUROPEAN TAKE-OUT BAND
The band is grown from German, Slovenian and Norwegian roots. Members have been entertaining audiences for years with accordians, bass guitar, drums and vocals. They make the Street Dance a party open to everyone.

FESTIVAL BRASS
Big and brassy, these wonderful musicians entertain in The Weingarten. The seven-piece ensemble formed in 1990 and has played hundreds of events throughout the Northwest. It’s a relaxed, fun-loving group of friends.
GRUBER FAMILY BAND
The Gruber Family Band goes back to the 1900s. Five generations later, the tradition alive! Al Gruber brought the family band to the Mount Angel Oktoberfest more than 20 years ago. When he retired, his grandson Michael, took over the piano accordion, along with the button box. Toni and Peter continued on sax and the drums. Toni’s son Martin plays piano, sax and clarinet and loves to sing.
MARION COUNTY CITIZENS BAND
The Marion County Citizens Band is a diverse group of musicians who delight in bringing the joy of concert band music to the public. Their repertoire runs from Sousa marches to classic Glenn Miller arrangements to serious composers like Holst and Ralph Vaughn Williams. They are the Official Concert Band of Mt. Angel’s Oktoberfest.
MANUELA HORN & THE POWERKRAUTS
Manuela Horn, the Austrian Amazon known for her yodeling, dancing, rocking, acting and comedy, will appear both solo and with her band the Powerkrauts. After starting out in German TV shows, Horn got her big break in the 2009 America’s Got Talent competition, where she advanced to the semifinals. Her motto is “It’s always Oktoberfest somewhere!”
POLKATICIANS
Formed in 2018 by Dany and Rob Rayfield, the award-winning group banded together to play polka and traditional jazz.
ROSE CITY
ACCORDION CLUB
The club is a non-profit organization of individuals who share enjoyment and enthusiasm for the accordion. The club embraces all styles of accordion music and welcomes all who have an interest in the accordion whether they play or not. The
players in the Prostgarten and the Hopfengarten are all volunteers. “Squeeze” some music into your life! For information go to www. rosecityaccordionclub.org/
SALZBURGER ECHO
The 12-foot Swiss Alphorns, Austrian cowbells and harmony yodeling bring audiences face to face with European culture. The Alphorns shown in the photo to the left are a must-see!
S-BAHN
Why the name “S-Bahn”? S-Bahn is the commuter train that connects cities in Germany with the suburbs. The S-Bahn connects people, it brings people together. Singer and accordionist Richard Tyce founded the S-Bahn in Vancouver in the 1990s. The band includes Bruce Henczel – drums, marimba, viola, vocals; Alexander Flock –guitar and vocals; and Jim Hopson – trombone, tuba, alphorn, bass guitar and vocals. With a diverse and eclectic repertoire, the S-Bahn specializes in Oktoberfests (German) and Malankas (Ukranian).
THE GORDANAIRS
The Gordanairs are back, bringing their unique blend of Old World music and dance. Whether by accordian or German slap dancing, they light up the venue. They hail from British Columbia and have spent decades recording and performing traditional German music, often pieces composed or arranged by leader Gordon Groening.
Z MUSIKMAKERS
Z Musikmakers have delighted Oktoberfest audiences since the group’s founding in 1977 by Paul Zollner. This dynamic band entertains with traditional polka music, big band tunes and so much more. A guaranteed delight to all audiences!

Learn to do the Chicken Dance, join in the songs, step onto the dance floor or share in the amazement at the musicality of cowbells! The Alpinegarten is open to families with children until closing each night. The Alpinegarten is a WiFi hot spot!

Connecting Mt. Angel Since 1910
At the turn of the 20th century, the need for reliable telephone service in Mt. Angel had reached a tipping point. Necessity breeds innovation, and Mt. Angel Telephone Company (now DirectLink) was born in 1910 when local dairy farmer Henry Berning successfully convinced city leaders of the need for their own independent telephone company. Articles of incorporation were filed on March 26, 1910 by C.R. Houghan, Henry Klinger, and G. D. Ebner.

Weingarten expands
Oktoberfest 2024 will inaugurate a new building for the festival, which is celebrating its 59th year. The building will be dedicated during a special ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, opening day for the festival.
A structure was just completed to accommodate overflow patronage at the Weingarten. The 7,800 sq. ft. building replaces a rental tent and represents one of the festival’s biggest capital expenditures in recent years. The building cost $170,000, but organizers saved nearly $50,000 via discounts and donations involving local companies and individuals. The board began planning for the building when tent rates skyrocketed amid the COVID-19 epidemic.
“We’re constantly trying to make the festival better and more resilient,” Oktoberfest Board President Bill Bischoff said. “People always want to see new things and we’re always looking to get the infrastructure we need in place.”
The board made the decision to move forward four years ago and has been setting aside money ever since, Bischoff said. “You really have to pre-plan for big capital projects.”
Ground was broken July 5, said board member John Gooley. Just more than a month later it was essentially ready for inspection by the board as it gathered for its annual photo and final festival planning session.
Ready to Buy or Sell?
The building is open on the north side that faces the Weingarten. Its asphalt floor makes it much more ADA accessible (the tent had a gravel floor) and the portable toilets will be on asphalt as well, with four overhead doors opening up for ease of access.
Key local companies that offered discounts or donated time and/ or materials included K&E Excavating, Withers Lumber, James Hardie Siding, H&H Paving and Mustang Truss.
“We work all year long to put on a tremendous festival,” Gooley said, “and it really adds something when we can save money for years and spend it on a really worthwhile project.”

Outfitting Oktoberfest
Marilyn Hall still has the first dirndl she made for herself back in 1980. A maternity dress, later altered for nursing, it now resides in her “dirndl graveyard.”
“It didn’t fit me because I didn’t know how to do alterations,” she admitted. “And yes, I have a dirndl graveyard that’s for ruffles that didn’t work or things that are faded.”
While her sewing skills were lacking in the beginning, her enthusiasm for dressing up for her hometown’s Oktoberfest celebration was inspiring enough that she eventually took a sewing class at Chemeketa Community College where she learned to make alterations and follow a pattern.
“We have dressed up every year,” she said, showing off the tiny dirndls and lederhosen she made for her eight children over the years. “It’s kind of like going to a Halloween party and you’re not dressed up. You need it.”
Especially if you are going to perform the traditional Oktoberfest maypole dance which, in 1990, Hall began organizing along with fellow volunteers Mary Grant and Nann Fleck.
“We jury-rigged a dress, and we took vinyl and made suspenders,” Hall said, pulling out a box filled with costumes from that first year. “I still have the collection.” It was a lot of trial and error that first year as the women struggled to supply costumes for each dancer.
“We made a decision to lend costumes because it’s an equalizer,” Hall recalled. “We provide shoes, socks, dresses, flowers…everything.” All at no cost to the participants.
That’s how Hall became the keeper of the Oktoberfest costume closet, an enormous collection that has slowly amassed – largely because of community donations – over the past 35 years. “This is not the Marilyn Hall production. It’s a Mt. Angel production,” Hall laughed, explaining that, while she does sew a dress now and then, almost all the clothing has been gifted or purchased.
Thank You to the Community for Your Business & Referrals
JIM KINGHORN
Webertanz
The Webertanz or traditional maypole dance, has been an important part of Mount Angel Oktoberfest for more than 30 years. School children open the festival at the Village Bandstand each day, followed by the traditional mother-daughter dances and the boys in their light-hearted, athletic dances. The dancing includes the youngest to the oldest members of our community. It’s a symbol of the town coming together to make Oktoberfest great. The girls wear das dirndl (dirn’d’l), and the boys die lederhosen (lay’-dar-hoezen), which originated in the European Alps. Das Dirndl or peasant dress is a three-piece outfit: a jumper-like dress with the bodice, a white lace-trimmed blouse and a lacy apron. The embroidery on the men’s pants or lederhosen usually reflects hunting themes. The men’s outfit may have suspenders called hosentraeger.
Which is not to say Hall’s task is easy. In 2023 she provided costumes to 253 women and 88 men, which meant scheduling fittings, making necessary alterations and keeping an inventory that is so detailed she can find the dress she needs in seconds, rattling off, not only its size but also the name of the person who donated it.
Her enormous sewing room is lined with racks of clothing meticulously sized and box upon box of black shoes. “Everything around here has to do with Oktoberfest,” she laughed.
Even her YouTube channel, coined @Ofestlady, is filled with stepby-step costume tutorials. “I feel like this is just really fun,” she said. “So many beautifully made dresses… they’re kind of timeless -- the style that doesn’t change.”
Our Ode to Joy
“Oktoberfest Joy,” the bronze Bavarian children, dance above the fountain at the crossroads of Highway 214 and Main and Church streets in Mount Angel. Maintained by the Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce, it was originally unveiled and presented to the community on Sept. 13, 1998.
The Chamber of Commerce and community volunteers plan and update the landscape, as well as keep the fountain in working order.
To help the sculptor, the late Jerry Joslin, create the original statue, former Chamber President Connie Lauzon worked with Marilyn Hall to make authentic Bavarian costumes to put on the dancers. They carefully sought out material that would burn away in the bronzing process. They fashioned blouses and aprons to appropriate size and gathered felt, buttons, leather lederhosen and suspenders with plastic buckles. The hat the boy holds was that of the late Fr. Emmanuel Clark, OSB, the St. Mary’s parish priest who served as chaplain on the Oktoberfest Board for 12 years.
Our Glockenspiel
When you are in the village square at Mt. Angel Oktoberfest look up, you’ll see our musical animated Glockenspiel. At 11 a.m., 1, 4, and 7 p.m. the music starts, and the carved figures begin their circular journey depicting Mt. Angel history.
The Kalapuya Brave was one of many natives who climbed the butte to pray, at “Tapalamaho” or “dwelling place of the Great Spirit”.
Robert and Katrina Zollner, two of the earliest settlers, arrived here in 1867 with eight other German families. They are ancestors of the festival’s own Z-Musikmakers, famous for their performances in the Biergarten.
Mathias Butsch arrived in 1878. He is dubbed “the father of Mt. Angel.” He was instrumental in building the first church, railroad station, and
general store and is credited with inviting the Benedictine Monks here.
Prior Adelhelm Odermatt arrived in 1881. The monastery was eventually built on the butte that is now known as Abbey Hill. From Engelberg, Switzerland, he suggested the town be called “Mount Angel”, the English meaning of Engleberg.
Sister Bernadine Wachter and the Sisters arrived in 1882 from the Swiss Convent of Maria Rickenback. She was the first Prioress of the Benedictine Convent and their new school.
Papa Oom-Pah playing his big tuba, represents Mt. Angel’s Oktoberfest. Bavarian Children are the grand finale, as they swing to Edelweiss, sung by Mt. Angel school children.

Touch of Bavaria also makes sure our distinguished guests and TV personalities are outfitted in the best Bavarian style, and have a great selection of tracht including authentic lederhosen and dirndls from Germany.
Oktoberfest says a great big DANKE SCHÖN to their sponsors for helping Oktoberfest become the Northwest’s best-loved folk festival.
Oktoberfest Encourages Moderation
The highly quaffable beers of Bavaria are brewed according to a law that has been in effect for over 500 years. The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, enacted by Duke Wilhelm IV, is still in force today, making it the oldest consumer protection law in the world.
All the beers from Germany sold at the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest are still brewed in accordance with Das Bayrische Reinheitgebot (Bavarian Purity Law). No wonder these beers are of superior quality!
Mt. Angel Oktoberfest and its distributors encourage everyone to drink responsibly. The fine beverages and wines at our festival are best consumed in moderation and savored for their unique flavors.
We applaud festival goers who drink responsibly and use a designated driver.
DESIGNATED DRIVERS pledge not to drink alcoholic beverag-
es while at the festival and to provide safe transportation for their friends in the group. All Designated Drivers receive a wristband and soft drinks. All participants must be 21 or older with a driver’s license.
Patrons not consuming alcohol have the opportunity to sign up as an official Designated Driver from 5 p.m. until closing each day of the festival in the Alpinegarten, Biergarten and Weingarten.
