A history of The Oregon Garden 1940s Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN) explores the idea of developing a botanical garden.

1980s City of Salem contacts OAN about building a botanical display garden.

1990 The Garden is listed in OAN’s long-range plan.

1994 The newly formed Oregon Nurserymen’s Garden Foundation holds its first meeting.

1995 The site is selected in the city of Silverton.

The agreement includes the development of a wetland system to recycle the city’s treated wastewater.

1997 Groundbreaking is held June 27.

1999 The J. Frank Schmidt Jr. Pavilion, Native Oak Grove and Wetlands are dedicated.

2000 The Conifer Garden, Rose Garden, Children’s Garden, Hughes Water Garden, Northwest Garden, Bosque and Chez Garden are created.

2001 Grand opening celebration is held June 29 to July 3. Silverton Market Garden is created.

2002 The Gordon House, Rediscovery Forest and National Resource Education Center open.

2003 Pet-Friendly Garden is created.

2004 Visitor Center, Sensory Garden and Honor Garden are completed.

2005 Lewis and Clark Garden created.

2006 Moonstone Garden Management begins managing the Garden.

2007 Groundbreaking ceremony for the Oregon Garden Resort is held May 1.

2008 The Oregon Garden Resort opens in October.

2012 Fire Safe House is created.

2014 The Discovery Pavilion is built in the Rediscovery Forest.

2016 The Oregon Garden celebrates its 15-year anniversary.

Specialty Gardens Silverton Market Garden Many of Oregon’s 147 agricultural products grow here, including berries, grapes, grass seed and hops. Egg-laying chickens also make their home in this garden, and produce from the garden is donated to needy families.

Children’s Garden Youngsters can dig for dinosaur bones, play in a hobbit house, enjoy the miniature train garden and marvel at our collection of weird plants.

Pet-Friendly Garden Fido will love this garden, which showcases which plants are friendly and which are toxic to pets.

Rediscovery Forest This dynamic 15-acre working forest is a collaboration of the Oregon Forest Resources Institute and The Oregon Garden.

Enjoy strolling along the pathways beneath tall Douglas-fir trees, and learn about Oregon’s sustainable forests. During the holiday season, visit the forest for Christmas in the Garden – featuring light displays, an ice skating rink and a holiday market.

Sensory Garden This therapeutic garden includes plantings from around the world and is designed to activate all of your senses.

A-Mazing Water Garden Conifer Garden This garden is an American Conifer Society Reference Garden, boasting one of the largest collections of dwarf and miniature conifers in the country. Some are one-of-a-kinds collected from around the world. In partnership with the American Conifer Society, an expansion of the Conifer Garden is planned.

Wetlands

This unique garden combines wildlife habitat and treated wastewater recycling, two functions which are usually kept separate. Winner of the 2002 Honor Award for Environmental/ Sustainable Design from the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Oak Grove The 25-acre native oak grove features the 100-foot Signature Oak, a 400 year-old tree designated one of Oregon’s “Heritage Trees.”

An innovative partnership between the city of Silverton and the Garden, the Wetlands cool the city’s treated wastewater.

The water travels at up to 700 gallons per minute through a series of ponds, creating a habitat for wildlife and plants.

Northwest Garden This garden’s landscape design showcases plants and trees that thrive in our region. One of our first completed gardens, this is an excellent place to gather ideas for your own landscape.

Paeonia suffruticosa Tree Peony: Grown for their flamboyant flowers. Some of the most striking specimens can be found in the Rose Garden.

Eryngium planum ‘Jade Frost’ Sea Holly: A horticulture staff favorite, this plant thrives in hot sun and attracts butterflies! Located in the Children’s Garden.

Magnolia sprengeri Caerhays Belle: One of our most anticipated flowering trees in the Garden. Located in the Conifer Garden, this tree can reach 50 feet tall and is most beautiful mid-March.

Hydrangea paniculata PeeGee Hydrangea: A showpiece in the summer, this plant’s white panicles can reach up to 14 inches. You can find it in the Rose Garden.

Crape Myrtle: Shockingly bright flowers in late summer and fall, bright yellow to orange leaves in fall, and peeling bark year-round.

Found in the Bosque and Sensory Garden.

Hesperantha coccinea ‘Oregon Sunset’ River Lily or Crimson Flag: Bright red and pink blooms arrive in the fall on this South African plant. Found in the Conifer Garden.

Hamamelis x intermedia Hybrid Witch Hazel: Located along the tram path, its fragrant flowers range from yellow to red and last from January through early spring.

Callicarpa Americana Beautyberry: Clusters of glossy, iridescent purple berries last throughout the winter, providing a food source for birds. Found in the A-Mazing Water Garden and near the Bosque.

Programs & Education

Movies in the Garden The Oregon Garden

Garden University

Sunsets in the Garden feature live music, wine tasting and a beautiful sunset, Wednesday evenings in August.

The Barn Dance & Pig Roast features live music, line dancing lessons and a tasty barbecue dinner. Fourth Saturday in October.

Garden University offers a variety of lectures, demonstrations and workshops hosted by experts in the field. Topics include cooking, landscaping, vertical gardening, bee keeping, flower arranging, traveling and more! Tickets are $15, and free for Garden members and volunteers (workshops may have additional supply fees).

Junior Gardeners The Junior Gardener’s Club hosts fun, interactive activities to teach kids about gardening, science, crafts, music, exercise and more! This program is perfect for kids 10 years old and younger.

Tickets are $15 and include club activity & Garden admission for one adult and one child. Additional children with the same adult are $5.

Education The Oregon Garden Natural Resources Education Program provides 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students an opportunity to discover the importance of Oregon’s natural resources and to learn about forests, wetlands and wildlife. The Oregon Forest Resources Institute and Oregon Garden Foundation have partnered to bring this educational opportunity to children. Our goal is to help students understand how natural resources contribute to our quality of life.

Christmas in the Garden includes an outdoor ice skating rink, lights in the Rediscovery Forest, a traditional German Christmas market and photos with Santa. Thanksgiving through New Year’s.
