Food, Music, Dancing – the Joy of Being Together!

Whatever your favorite reason for attending the 57th annual Mt. Angel Oktoberfest – and there are MANY great ones – we’re glad you’re here to share the joy of being together!

The festival welcomes back musical friends from Germany, Donaumusikanten. Band members travel from communities in and around Bavaria to make Mt. Angel Oktoberfest part of their West Coast tour.

Donaumusikanten is known for their blend of traditional Bavarian folk music with modern rock songs.

“We are so pleased to have them returning,” said Monica Bochsler, Oktoberfest director of PR and Marketing. “Donaumusikanten brings songs and music that we know and love for 20 years, but it always has an upbeat, engaging style,” she said. “They bring new 4 • Sept. 15-18, 2022

songs, but introduce them in the midst of what we know. In a year or two it is a favorite along with the rest!”

After two years away due to pandemic travel restrictions, Donaumusikanten, sponsored by Withers Lumber Company, is scheduled to perform all four days of the festival in the Weingarten.

10 Barrel Brewing of Bend is introducing Mt. Angel Doppelbock during the festival. Brewed at the request of Biergarten Chairman Nick Splonski, it will be served at the Biergarten and the new Engelgarten venue, which does not require a cover charge, so festivalgoers eager to give it a try can do so without purchasing a wristband.

Vendors can be found throughout downtown along S. Garfield Street and E. Charles Street, with all proceeds supporting local schools, churches and other community groups.

The Klaberheads

Oktoberfest is a major fundraising opportunity for these groups, with an estimated $750,000 raised in total during a normal year. With most vendors returning for 2022, festivalgoers have a chance to enjoy delicious food while supporting the organizations that support their communities.

Donaumusikanten Die Original Donaumusikanten returns all the way from Germany to perform at the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest.

Hailing from Bavarian regions, these popular band members have called Mt. Angel a second home after performing at Oktoberfest for nearly three decades. Though they were unable to attend in 2021 due to travel restrictions, they are eager to return this year.

The Klaberheads will return all the way from Ohio, celebrating 92 years of Oktoberfest performances throughout the country.

Founded by German immigrant and self-taught musician Franz Klaber in 1930, the band is led today by his son, also named Franz Klaber. He is joined by a close-knit group of family and lovers of traditional German music.

The Gordanairs Popular family band The Gordanairs will be back this year, bringing their unique blend of Old World music and dance. Whether by accordian or German slap dancing, they light up the venue.

The Gordanairs hail from British Columbia and have spent decades recording and performing traditional German music, often pieces composed or arranged by leader and accordion player Gordon Groening.

The Gordanairs will be around throughout the festival to share their traditional take on classic German culture.

St. Mary Church The peppy, energetic music of Oktoberfest is great fun, but there’s also an option for those seeking calm, uplifting music set in the beautiful St. Mary Church.

This Gothic-style architectural jewel will host large and small choral groups, as well as alphorns and organists, with performances free and open to everyone.

Also scheduled at the church during the festival are morning mass and prayer Thursday and Friday, vigil mass Saturday, and Spanish mass Sunday. Guests are welcome to enjoy its peaceful and calming beauty, and invited to note its architecture, stained glass and statuary.

Shuttle to Abbey and Manuscript ‘Tour’ Shuttle service to Mount Angel Abbey will resume this year, allowing festivalgoers a chance to see one of the city’s most iconic institutions.

Access to the abbey will be through the black shuttle line, with riders dropped off outside the abbey bookstore. Black shuttle stops in town can be found near Touch of Bavaria clothing store, St. Mary Church, and St. Mary Public School.

At 2 p.m. Sunday in the Abbey Library, Br. Anselm and Br. Albert will present a Visual Tour of Ancient Manuscripts with some dating back to the 1200s.

Scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on the track at John F. Kennedy High School, the event features a lower-intensity 5K walk/ run, and a competitive 10K run up to Mt. Angel Abbey and back. Awards will be given by age group and other categories, while all competitors receive a commemorative pint glass (those 21 and older will also receive a free beer ticket).

Registration is open at oktoberfest.org. There’s a map showing the route. Traditional costumes are encouraged for fun!

Volkswalk The Volkswalk continues the German tradition of walking for wellness and companionship.

Scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17, this non-competitive event is open to all ages and walking abilities, however, those who wish to record their walk and receive an award may pay $3 to for the award materials.

The walk opens at 9 a.m. at the south side of the Festhalle and will proceed uphill to Mt. Angel Abbey for a stunning view of the verdant Willamette Valley. Walkers are invited to proceed at their own pace.

Weiner Dogs Races The wiener dog races are back, with daring sprints to the finish by our favorite bratwurst-style pets.

Road Race

One of the highlights of the festival, races are Saturday, Sept. 17, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kindergarten area outside St. Mary’s Public School. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. Preregistration is encouraged – only 70 spots are available for competitors!

The Sunday morning 5K and 10K races have returned from hiatus and runners are invited to join in.

Spectators are welcome to watch the spunky canines go sprinting down the field!

Mount Angel Abbey was founded by Benedictine monks in 1882. The abbey houses a seminary, library and museum and operates the nearby Benedictine Brewery.

ENGELGARTEN A Casual Atmosphere

Mt. Angel Oktoberfest is opening a new venue for those seeking a low-key, casual atmosphere.

The Engelgarten, meaning “Angel Garden,” premiers this year on the north end of Garfield Street, in the Arts and Crafts area.

Festival spokesperson Monica Bochsler said the new garten was the fortunate combination of a festival that keeps growing and a property owner who wanted to help.

“Engelgarten is one of those serendipitous events that just happens once in a while,” she said. “No long nights of planning or stress. We just had a partner who wanted to be involved approach us.”

Bochsler describes the Engelgarten as “a low key place, designed for friendly conversation.” There will be no live performances and no cover charge.

Guests are welcome to bring in food purchased from one of the many vendors. Plus, festivalgoers can try some of Oktoberfest’s specialty brews!

Brews & Beverages BEER Reisdorf ABV 4.8% IBU 21 $7 A true German Kolsch. Top fermentation with several weeks of cold maturation. An elegant beer designed to be pale in color, soft on the palate, with a restrained fruitiness, and a delicate dryness in the finish.

Heater Allen Bobtoberfest ABV 5.6% IBU 25 $7 Traditional Oktoberfest-style beer, a high gravity Märzen.

Bright amber color; rich, malty, and smooth, with a just touch of clean hop bitterness. If you can’t make it to Munich this fall, this is the next best thing.

Silver Falls 1933 Pilsner ABV 4.8% IBU 36 $7 German-style Pilsner has sweetness of Pilsner malt that is balanced with the Saaz hops.

Rosenstadt Helles ABV 4.8% IBU 35 $7 Helles (“light-colored”) is meant to be drunk with gusto.

More delicate than Pilsner, Helles depends on a perfect balance between malt and hops. Malts evoke warm bread while Tettnanger hops supply delicately floral, lemon notes. Six weeks to age creates supreme balance and smoothness.

PROSTGARTEN A Place to Relax

The Prostgarten is located one block north of die Früchtsäule or the Harvest Monument by the little, white house – the historic Saalfeld House – home to Mount Angel’s Historical Society.

The Prostgarten is right behind Columbia Bank and the bank sponsors this terrific place to sit down, dine, talk with friends and try some great beer and wine. Bring the food purchased from one of the chalets run by local non-profits and relax a while.

Music is provided by volunteers from the Rose City Accordion Club and Friends.

Artisans and artists show wreaths, toys and more at Oktoberfest Mount Angel Oktoberfest welcomes more than 80 crafters and artisans each year. They display their wares in booths located downtown on the north end of the festival. Festival-goers will see everything from wooden toys to fine art.

Handcrafted offerings include pottery, jewelry, painted and knitted clothing, greeting cards, hand puppets, dried flower arrangements, quilts, calligraphy, stained glass, and more. Specialty crafts include Dutch lace, hand-painted Ukrainian eggs, Bavarian dried flower hair bands and glassblown figurines.

Free Family Fun Oktoberfest in Mount Angel has entertainment for the whole family.

There’s free fun and entertainment in the Kindergarten open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., The Petting Farm sponsored by Wilco is staffed by members of a local 4-H Club, the animals are attended and available for petting. There’s also a hay maze and things to climb and bounce on. Do not miss the ever-popular Wiener Dog races at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Sunday Features 5K, 10K Fun Runs

OKTOBERFEST FILE

The Silverton Runners Club, which celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this spring, will be in charge of the 2022 Oktoberfest fun runs on Sunday.

“The fun run is back with a lot of changes and, we hope, improvements,“ said Steve Ritchie of the Silverton Runners Club.

David Castle will be the race director, with Ritchie, Rick Stucky and Erik Cross helping out. Proceeds from the event will benefit cross country programs at Silverton, Kennedy and Gervais high schools. Athletes from the three schools will serve as volunteers.

The races, a 10-kilometer and a 5K, moved from Saturday to Sunday.

“There is less traffic around the festival on Sunday morning. And we changed the course so that both the 5K and the 10K are within the city limits so vehicles will not be speeding around runners,” Ritchie said. The races will use Kennedy High as the start and finish point.

Pre-registration is $35 for the 10K and $30 for the 5K. Day-of-the-race signups are $40 and $35. Runners 21 and older get an Oktoberfest pint glass and a beer. Sign up at oktoberfest.org/oktoberfest-running-events/.

Saturday Offers Golf Tournament At Mount Angel’s Evergreen Golf Course, golfers will be getting into the swing of things Saturday, Sept. 17. The 18-hole, shotgun-start tournament is a four-person scramble with lunch and prizes immediately following. Info at oktoberfest.org/attractions/golf-tournament/.

Check in is 7 – 7:30 a,m, Shotgun start is at 8 a.m. Lunch and prizes will be at 1 p.m. The event benefits Kennedy High School sports.

supports Oktoberfest during the most difficult parts of the festival – set up and take down – Wednesday before festival and Monday following Oktoberfest, NW Natural pitches in to feed the 150 volunteers hard at work. Perhaps you have rested under the NW Natural tents located throughout the festival. These spaces are always appreciated rain or shine.

Wilco a local, farmer-owned cooperative since 1967, supplies quality products in their retail farm stores including workwear and footwear, pet food and supplies, lawn and garden supplies, plants, hardware, paint and livestock feed/equipment. As supporters of youth in agriculture, Wilco sponsors the Farm Fun activities at the Kindergarten.

Portland General Electric supports the Kindergarten area, helping kids enjoy the simple joys of being together as friends, having faces painted, and enjoying the balloons tied to fun shapes. PGE also provides their fun program Mad Science in the Kindergarten Performance Pavilion, helping kids learn a bit more about electricity while having fun.

The Oregon Garden Resort is the proud sponsor of the family Alpinegarten. Visitors to Oktoberfest love the interactive music in the Alpinegarten. The resort puts on a German Christmas Market and light festival each year during the holidays. The Oregon Garden Resort is where many band members stay during the Festival.

Mt. Angel Sausage Company provides funding for the festival’s designated driver program and is Mount Angel’s own European style sausage maker. They are open year-round to enjoy Oktoberfest-like atmosphere, European market, great sausage and beverages. Relax in the summer and enjoy a beer and sausage on their patio, or dine-in when the weather is less welcoming.
