Positive Outcomes
Santiam Canyon faced a steep climb – and keeps moving upward by James Day You are winding your way through a curvy section of Highway 22 near Gates and all of a sudden you see one of those orange, diamond-sized roadside signs. This one says EVENT AHEAD. Wow, this thing is really happening! Just ahead a curve or two lay a grassy plain between Highway 22 and the North Santiam River. About 75 people had gathered to witness a dream coming true. Or maybe it was the beginning of a dream. On July 6, 2026, ground was broken on land donated by Frank Lumber next to Packsaddle County Park for a memorial for veterans and first-reponders.
The project is the earnest aspiration of Mill City’s Ron Van Vlack, a Vietnam and Iraq war veteran who has worked for the past two decades with Point Man Ministries, a veterans support group. On that sunny afternoon a group of veterans, elected officials, community members and dignitaries gathered to watch the dream take its next step. Yes, the schedule had to be adjusted (the original plan was to break ground on Feb. 14, Oregon’s birthday). Hoops had to be jumped through, money had to be raised (more must be raised to complete the project), Marion County bent over backward to help, and there we were, watching those dignitaries and elected officials use golden shovels to stir up the soil.

It was one of those classic Santiam Canyon moments. Someone gets a good idea, gathers up a crew of believers and everyone works like the devil to help make it come to pass.

Park, also is angling toward a happy ending. After a year-long planning process, some local fundraising and determined grant writing work, new playground equipment will go into the facility as the first piece of its renewal. Key pieces of the park plan, which went through a working group and public outreach events, include a large public pavilion, shade trees and native landscaping, walkways, trails and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access, with the pavilion, playground and the ADA work the big ticket items.
station has been a frustrating piece of reality for the district for years. Bad ADA access, rats, not enough room for fire trucks or fire fighters. It took fundraising, determination, innumerable pancake breakfasts and time (ah, there is that word again) but on July 5 (yes, one day before the veterans groundbreaking), Idanha-Detroit Fire held an open house at its new station off of Blowout Road. It looked splendid. It has five apparatus bays, allowing the district, which has just two full-time employees, to house all of its gear in one spot. Before completion of the new facility, half the gear was at the dilapidated station in Idanha and half at the Community Center in Detroit. In addition, the new
City officials hope the new facility will serve as a vital community space, with space for the farmers market and as a more comfortable spot for the Santiam Music Festival and other summer events.
Lyons North Santiam School District and the North Santiam Youth Association are teaming up on an ambitious plan to tackle youth health and well-being issues by expanding the number and quality of sports fields in Stayton and the Santiam Canyon. Mari-Linn School in Lyons will play a key role in the project, which is designed to be completed in four phases. Mari-Linn is scheduled to upgrade its field to turf and create a surfaced walking path around the perimeter that would be available to community members as well. continued on page 21

Cities of North Santiam River Country City of Aumsville Aumsville is a “small town with a big heart.” Its unique and vibrant character can be found in the annual Corn Festival, the Brian Haney Memorial skate park, and the Wildwood Splash Park. Founded in the 1850s and incorporated in 1911, Aumsville has grown while maintaining its close-knit character and deep connections to the surrounding farms, businesses and community. 503-749-2030 City of Detroit Detroit was founded during the construction of the Oregon Pacific Railroad. The city prospered as a center for the logging industry in the 1920s. It was incorporated in 1952, the same year it was relocated to higher ground due to the construction of the Detroit Dam. The Detroit Lake Recreation Area Business Association hosts events throughout the year, including May’s Detroit Lake Fishing Derby and July’s “Fireworks Over the Lake.” detroitoregon.us, 503-854-3496. City of Gates Gates was founded as a settlement for miners and loggers who lived in the area during the winter months. A post office was established in February 1882. City of Idanha Originally known as Muskrat Camp, Idanha is surrounded by the forests and natural beauty of the Cascade foothills. The community offers a peaceful setting with easy access to outdoor recreation, including hiking, fishing, camping and exploring the nearby mountains and waterways. Attractions Brown House Event Center Pioneer businessman Charles Brown built the 3,500 sq. ft home in 1902. The family lived there until 1928, when it became the community’s first hospital. The Santiam Heritage Foundation acquired it in 2001 and over the years restored the historic house at 425 N. First Ave. It is open for tours the second Sunday of the month, 12 – 2 p.m. and can be rented for private functions. 503-769-8860

Silver Falls State Park/Trail of 10 Falls: Hikers can see all 10 waterfalls in a loop trail or visit the most iconic, South Falls, on a paved trail.
Wildwood Splash Park: 700 N. 5th St., Aumsville. Playground with summer splash pad, covered picnic area and restrooms.
Abiqua Falls: This 102-foot waterfall near Scotts Mills is part of the same geological formation that created the waterfalls at Silver Falls.
Church Park: Between Main and Starr on Pine Street in Sublimity, features a veterans’ memorial, picnic shelter, children’s playground, course for disc golf, horseshoe pits and running trail.
Detroit Lake: Created by a dam constructed from 1949 to 1953 on the North Santiam River, Detroit Lake is one of the state’s prime recreation spots, with year-round fishing as well as seasonal boating and camping. Turner Lake: A popular local spot with a boat ramp, dock, restrooms and other amenities, including kayak and paddleboard rentals. Aumsville Ponds: The 77-acre site outside of Aumsville features a trail, wildlife viewing and a fishing pier for bass, bluegill, trout and more. Kimmel Park: A popular seven-acre community park located along the scenic North Santiam River at 519 SE 6th Ave. in Mill City. Lyons Bass Ponds: Just 1.4 miles from Lyons, the reservoir is a versatile fishing spot. North Santiam River: A major artery of the Santiam River with dozens of parks and points to fish, paddle, picnic, hike and camp. See map page 12. Brian Haney Memorial Skatepark: 1110 Main St., Aumsville. Helmets required; open until curfew, weather permitting. No bikes allowed. Porter-Boone and Boone Docks Park: 1105 Main St., Aumsville. Covered area, access to creek, ping pong tables, stage/gazebo covered area, disc golf, playground, walking trail, and horseshoe pits.
Early Settlers Park: Early Settlers Park, located on West Main across from the Sublimity Fire Station, offers a reservable picnic shelter with sink, play structures, baseball field and tennis court. Northslope Park: In Stayton, off Fern Ridge Road near Dawn Drive, it has children’s play areas, a basketball court and a picnic area. Pioneer & Neitling Parks: Located off Seventh and Marion, they offer play equipment, disc golf course, and the beautiful Stayton-Jordan Bridge. Riverfront Park: Enjoy 55 acres of undeveloped land accessed by a pedestrian bridge from East Florence Street in Stayrton, the park provides opportunities for hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing and dog walking. Quail Run Park: Between Eagle Street and Meadowlark Drive in Stayton, it has a basketball court, children’s playground, and paved pathway. Santiam Park: Located in Stayton on the corner of Third and Wildflower, it features a picnic shelter, play area, and walking and bike trails. Stayton Dog Park: Located at 180 N 4th Ave. Dogs can play off leash in this fenced park open daily 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Westown Park: In West Stayton on Westpark Court, it has play areas, a basketball court, two picnic tables, and a drinking fountain.

But the city on July 27 approved a $17.75 million bid for the construction contract. Construction is expected to begin in late August or early September. Other pieces of the financial puzzle are expected to bring the entire project home for less than $23 million.
North Fork/Elkhorn The 2020 wildfires raised hell in the North Fork/Elkhorn area, punishing the housing stock, burying the old golf course and forcing yearslong shutdowns of Marion County and Bureau of Land Management recreation facilities. Site by site they are reopening. This spring it was Salmon Falls’ turn. The popular swimming hole along North Fork Road was reduced by the fires to a waterfall and a pond, with the rest of the landscape thoroughly charred and requiring massive amounts of cleanup and tree removals. Marion County Park planners also wanted to solve what had been an overuse/parking problem at the site. So they moved the parking lot about one-third of a mile east, expanded it to serve 50 vehicles and established an overflow parking lot as well. The wetlands were restored and a pair of trails were developed, one to the pool at the bottom of the falls and one to the craggy rocks at the top of the falls. The gravel road from the parking lot/restroom area is nice and wide to accommodate first-responders.
to pay for parks and pool operations, but pool backers were clearly not done. As we moved into July enough money was raised to give the city enough breathing room to keep the pool open. Stayton also is part of the sports fields coalition that is planning 250,000 square feet of improvements at the high school, a project Principal Jamie McCarty called “a game-changer for Stayton High. It will be the best sports complex around when it is completed.” Stayton and other Canyon officials also continue to lead the way in terms of working to persuade the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers NOT to draw down Detroit Lake this fall in a proposal aimed at improving fish passage. A similar effort on the South Santiam River at Green Peter led to massive fish dieoffs, water quality problems far downstream, and lawsuits. The big challenge for Stayton in the drawdown is turbidity, the addition of sediment particles into the North Santiam. The city’s water treatment plant might be overwhelmed if the water gets too chunky. On the last day of July, naturally, Santiam Hospital & Clinics received word that its planned merger with Salem Health has received an emergency exemption from the Oregon Health Authority. An Aug. 5 Oregon Department of Justice public hearing is the final piece of the puzzle that must be completed. The two entities hope to merge by Sept. 30.
