The City of Monmouth and Western Oregon University are inextricably linked. Both trace their roots to 1856 when they were founded by Oregon pioneers. The school, originally called Monmouth University, is the oldest public university in Oregon and on the West Coast.

The city now has about 10,000 residents. WOU, a NCAA Division II school, has a student enrollment of just under 5,000 undergraduates and roughly 1,000 graduate students. Beyond education, for decades Monmouth’s claim to distinction was its status as a dry town. The importation, exportation, sale and consumption of alcohol within the city limits was prohibited from 1859 until 2002, when voters rescinded the ban. It was the last dry town on the West Coast. Although a small, rural community, Monmouth boasts its own electric distribution system. It is close to big city amenities with Salem, Oregon’s state capitol, 12 miles to the east and Portland, the state’s largest city, 60 miles to the north. The Pacific Ocean is roughly an hour to the west, while the Cascade Mountains are an hour’s drive east.

The Willamette River shapes the history and future of the City of Independence.
August POLK COUNTY FAIR An old-fashioned fair weekend. Polk County Fairgrounds and Event Center, 520 S. Pacific Hwy. W., Rickreall. www.co.polk.or.us/fair
Oregon Trail pioneers settled in the area in 1845. Oregon’s original town of Independence, platted by Elvin Thorp, was strategically located as a transportation hub with access to the river. When the flood of 1861 devastated the community, citizens saw a need to rebuild on higher ground. In 1867 log cabin store owner Henry Hill platted 40 acres for the town which became known as Henry Hill’s Town of Independence. By 1885 Thorp’s town and Hill’s town had incorporated into today’s Independence.

Economic prosperity in the decades following incorporation produced a building boom that created the charming downtown enjoyed today. Nearly 100 years later an Historic District was established. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The architectural styles found within the district include Victorian, Gothic, Craftsman, Italianite and Spanish Colonial. WALKING TRAIL The Willamette River Trail is a 5K soft-surface loop running from the Riverview Park Amphitheater to the North Riverfront Ballfield Complex. It passes through the river riparian zone, offering birdwatching opportunities. Access is from the north side of Riverview Park where a pedestrian bridge crosses Ash Creek. Trail access and parking are also available at Grand Street Dog Park, Independence Boat Ramp, and 10 DeAnn Drive. WILDLIFE WATCHING Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge’s 2,558 acres include observation areas, trails through wetlands, upland prairies and oak/ash forest plus interpretive exhibits. DISC GOLF A 9-Hole (par 27) WOU Disc Golf Course north of the Campus Recreation Turf Field is open to students and the general community. Course map and rules are located next to Hole #1. Free.
