ABOUT CANBY In order to draw a fair comparison, let’s compare Canby’s average rental rates with surrounding markets:

Nestled in the heart of the Willamette Valley and surrounded on three sides with rivers, Canby is a unique and beautiful place to call home. Canby’s rich history is embedded in its landscapes, and our history is tied closely with the history of the larger region. BUT, Canby is also a piece of country nestled alongside a burgeoning metropolitan area. It is our belief that Canby will be one of the last bastions of small town life left in the growing Northern Willamette Valley, and, as is the tradition in small towns across our nation, we welcome you.

CANBY STATISTICS Provided by the US Census Bureau

Estimated Current Population

Persons Over 65 Years of Age

Persons Under 18

Median Age 36.1 Female (percent) 50.6% Male (percent) 49.4% Median Household Income

Median Home Price

Home Ownership 67% Canby is uniquely its own. Bisected by Highway 99E, Canby also has easy access to both I-5 and I-205, making it a quick dash into the larger urban centers of Portland and Salem. Because we are not a “freeway” community, Canby has been able to retain its small town feel with quiet suburban streets, local retail markets, and long-

standing agricultural ties. Canby is also on the rise. As people seek to escape more densely populated cities, Canby appears the ideal choice for those looking for a place to raise their young families, to enjoy their retirement, or to find a quieter place that allows for convenient telecommuting. Canby has it all.

With our growing industrial sector on the edge of town, we are seeing more and more jobs that allow us to live, work, and play in Canby. Development within Canby’s downtown district is also providing new space for retailers, restaurants, and other services. We are a small growing city, and we are excited to welcome you to our community.

Canby Police

Canby Fire

Utility Services

Canby was ranked #1 by the National Council for Home Safety & Security ( and ranked #7 by Safewise ( as the safest midsize city in Oregon.

The men and women of Canby Fire provide firefighting, rescue, and ambulance service for over 54 square miles and over 30,000 citizens.

Canby’s utility makeup is unique in that we have multiple local providers for services that many other cities farm out to big corporate players.

In August 2012, the Canby Police department moved into a new 36,000 ft., two facility which will enhance its ability to serve Canby businesses and citizens. The building provides space and resources for emergency operation, crime investigations, and evidence storage. It has been designated as an Emergency Operations Center (EOC), with higher seismic standards and built with non-combustible materials. The City of Canby seeks neighborhood livability by promoting public safety which is reflected in a low crime rate.

Canby Fire’s job is to be there – any time, any place – that a citizen in Canby Fire District needs our help. Canby Fire responds to more than 2,500 emergencies and transports more than 1,200 sick or injured patients to area hospitals each year. In addition to emergency response, Canby Firefighter’s train at least onehour per day, maintain their equipment and apparatus in a “mission ready” status at all times, provide fire station tours and fire engine show offs, conducting fire and life safety business inspections, and dedicate time towards personal fitness and wellness.

For water and electricity, look no further than Canby Utility, our local customer-owned utility company since 1970. They provide top quality service for all of our water and electric needs, and are an independent subdivision of the city. For telecommunications, you can find DirectLink, formerly Canby Telephone, for all of your telecommunications needs from phone to internet, to streaming video services. Their local connection and involvement in the community guarantees a level of service that surpasses many of the national telecom brands.

Canby Cinema 8 is our eight-screen, f irst-run movie theater.

1. Oregon doesn’t have a sales tax, so you pay the tag price every time you purchase within the state. This absence of a sales tax gives Canby-ites additional buying power and allows them to know exactly what they’re paying every time they reach the checkout counter. 2. The original charter for the City of Canby included specific criteria for the width of our streets. Originally, all streets in Canby needed to be the width necessary for oxen to pull a u-turn in the middle of a street. No going around the block to turn around in this town! 3. The City of Canby is home to the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center. With the annual Clackamas County Fair & Rodeo every August, Canby maintains its small town feel

by hosting agricultural events, a full carnival and rides, and a nationally recognized rodeo. 4. Canby is the hometown of champion bull rider Chase Dougherty who, at the young age of 20, took two top honors at the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Chase won the Ram Top Gun award which came with a truck, a custom buckle, and a new revolver. Congratulations, Chase! 5. It is illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon. On cold, rainy days in Canby, it’s nice to be able to sit in the warmth and comfort of your car while you are filling up. This law is seen as a way of stimulating jobs in the area, so just put the nozzle down, sit back, relax, and enjoy your commute.

Canby 2019 Relocation Guide 19

Canby’s Agricultural Heritage Marks the Way to the Future Canby is often labeled a “bedroom” community of Portland and Salem, but Canby’s place in the larger Willamette Valley region is marked by its long-standing tradition in agriculture. Nicknamed “The Garden Spot,” Canby is surrounded by lush farmland and has several notable crops that bring people from all over the region to town for the quality of goods raised on our lands. One of the most notable is Swan Island Dahlias, home of the annual Dahlia Festival, which brings travelers from around the region and around the world to Canby’s small corner of the world. One of the oldest businesses in Canby, clocking in at 91 years, Swan Island Dahlias is the premier dahlia producer in the United States. Their annual festival draws people from around the country for an opportunity to witness the fields in full bloom. Photographers, gardeners and tourists alike come for this unique experience, and the event brings about 30,000 people to the Canby area. Portland’s culinary scene also benefits from the richness of our soil and the dedication of our local farmers. Canby has

multiple farm stands open to the public, and each season’s crops are on display for your home. From large scale wholesale farms like Gingerich Farms, specializing in blueberries and hazelnuts, to specialty flower farmers like Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, Canby represents a wide range of agricultural products. In recent years, many of our local farms have started Community Supported Agricultural programs that vary from your ability to sign up for a local vegetable box to receiving dairy products and/or meat and eggs.

Canby residents are lucky to have all the agricultural resources that we have and many of the multi-generational farming families in our region that have kept the tradition alive. As a new resident to Canby, you are lucky to be coming to an area where you can find fresh, locally sourced produce in your local grocery stores like Thriftway, Safeway and Fred Meyer, but also right in your own backyard direct from the source. The agricultural tradition is alive and well in our community, and in the age of farm to fork, we can’t think of a better place to develop roots and call home.

Canby’s Growing Agri-tourism Industry

Fir Point Farms

Canby is growing. That much we can say for sure, but growth isn’t always about traffic congestion and new housing developments. Sometimes, growth means the growth of an industry, and Canby is seeing a boom in the Agri-tourism industry.

hosts to visitors so they can learn about sustainable farming, the cheese making process, and ethical farming practices. Tessa and Todd Koch decided to open this artisan creamery just outside of Canby due to their family connections to the land.

one of the great photographic moments of the year. But Wooden Shoe isn’t just about flowers and wine. They also play host to three different distance runs throughout the year that brings people from all around the area to compete.

Agri-tourism is meant to connect people with farms, food producers, wineries, and other agricultural based businesses. It is also meant to deepen people’s relationships with the food they consume, and Canby has embraced this new tradition for decades. Whether this be our local pumpkin patches, dahlia festivals, tulip festivals, or the Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo, Canby plays host to tons of events that celebrate our agricultural history.

Fir Point Farms is another Agri-tourism location that has been an institution over the years. Their harvest festivals and summer offerings are great fun for the whole family, but you can enjoy their homemade breads and sandwiches in their restaurant all the year through.

So whether you are looking to connect with local producers of fine agricultural products or simply looking to get lost in a sixacre corn maze with your kids, Canby’s Agri-tourism industry has something to offer everyone, from parents to foodies to vinophiles alike.

But you don’t have to wait for a special event to enjoy the “fruits” of our labors. There are multiple businesses that play host to visitors throughout the year. TMK Creamery is one such business. With a dedication to being an Agricultural Education Resource, TMK Creamery plays

Are you a fan of flowers? Well you can’t beat Canby’s offerings in the floral department because we have folks like the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm and Swan Island Dahlias taking the lead in their respective categories. Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm is also a producer of locally made wines, their first vintage released in 2012. The farm is busy throughout the seasons, but their Tulip Fest is

Canby Community Park

CANBY PARK LIFE Canby’s local parks serve many functions for the city and its residents. They are quiet spaces for reflection, playful places for family fun, sports fields, and the perfect place to get fit. The Canby Park system has a little something for everyone. Wait Park is smack dab in the middle of our downtown and it plays host to many of our local events. Canby’s Independence Day Celebration, Slice of Summer Concert Series, and Movies in the Park all take advantage of the classic gazebo in the center of the park. With playground equipment for the kids and walkable to our downtown businesses, it is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Canby has always been a sporting community, and Maple Street Park, Legacy Park, and Canby Community Park provide opportunities for all kinds of sporting activities. Community Park is nestled next to the Molalla River and provides many young families a chance to take the kids for their first fishing experience.

Maple Street Park and Legacy Park both provide playground equipment, but they also have facilities for many sports: tennis, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and baseball. One of the newest parks in the city is the Logging Road Trail. This decommissioned logging

road is a 3.5 mile trail for pedestrians, dog-walkers, and nature enthusiasts, culminating on the Willamette River. When you get to the Territorial Road portion of the trail, duck into Eco Park and spend an hour playing Frisbee golf under the canopy of towering evergreens.

EVENTS There’s a lot going on in our little town! Throughout the year Canby plays host to any number of concerts, sporting events, theater productions, and many more. Canby is lucky to be the home of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center. In addition to our first rate annual fair and rodeo, we have the facilities to handle any number of other special events from food shows, gun shows, craft fairs, and garden expos. The Event Center draws lots of tourists, craftsmen, and other show goers to the area throughout the year, and they are always looking to broaden their offerings like this year’s first year El Grito event. In addition to the Fairgrounds and Event Center, the city’s local businesses also manage to throw some first rate events throughout the year. The Wild Hare Saloon & Café puts on Harefest, the Northwest’s largest tribute band festival, and the brand new Wild Hare Country Festival! In addition, there are numerous 5k and 10k races throughout the year. The North Lake Physical Therapy Gator Grinder and the 4:8 Financial Dahlia Run are just two of these events that support local sports teams and charities while providing a first class race experience.

will that makes Canby a bright spot of community involvement in the heart of the Willamette Valley.

Each of the holidays provides our community the chance to gather and celebrate as well. Whether it be trick or treating downtown at Halloween or celebrating the Fourth of July at our Canby Independence Day Festival, each holiday provides our residents that chance to develop the neighborly good

At Christmas, there are numerous events that provide us the chance to celebrate with neighbors, family and friends. The Light Up the Night event kicks off the season by turning on the holiday decorations in our downtown area, specifically at Wait Park. The Country Christmas Bazaar provides the

opportunity to find the perfect gift for your loved ones from local artisans, and Christmas in the Grove is the perfect family event for getting everyone into the spirit of the season. No matter what kind of events your are looking for, Canby provides plenty of opportunities to meet your neighbors, hang out with friends, and to experience all of the offerings of a life well lived in a community that celebrates together.

dinner options to a date night out, you can find the place. Who doesn’t love pizza? Canby has several options for pizza, but our long-standing pizza option in town has always been Fultano’s Pizza. If you are more in the mood for pizza by the slice or pizza and a cocktail, then Pizza Schmizza Pub & Grub is the destination for you. For Mexican, take the whole family to Nuevo Vallarta for family style dining. From a cozy

two-seater booth to a big back room that can hold parties of almost any size, you are sure to come out satisfied. No matter what your craving, you’ll find something to please the whole family. Also, new restaurants are looking at Canby all the time, so make sure to check out our membership directory online at business-directory.

RETAIL IN CAN BY Canby provides plenty of retail shopping experiences for our small town. From women’s boutique experiences like Park + Lu to bookstore and gift excursions at The Book Nook, it is possible to find something for yourself or for any gift giving occasion. Hulbert’s Flowers is our full service flower shop that has been in the same location since 1947! They have fresh flower arrangements, green and blooming plants of all kinds, stuffed animals, greeting cards and a nice selection of gift items and wall decor. They are a third generation family owned business, helping our community with weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, funerals and so much more.  The Book Nook, one of Canby’s newest businesses, provides for the book lover in all of us. With a used book trade-in program, new books, and an assortment of handmade local artisan gifts, any gift giving occasion is an easy trip to our downtown. If you are looking for antiques and other rare treasures, you can find what you are looking for at Red Door Antiques on 1st Street. Furniture, home goods, antiques, knickknacks, and more abound in this locally owned antique market. There are many more opportunities around town as well. Cutsforth’s Market has a handchosen gift section, Ace Hardware and Canby Builder’s Supply has something for every do-it-yourselfer, and many more. There is even our big box retailer Fred Meyer for many of those

things that fall in the gaps of our other smaller local businesses. Check out our Member Directory in the back of this publication for a better listing of all our local shopping opportunities. When we shop local, we keep our dollars within our community and support local families and charities. It is important for the overall health of our community that we make sure to capitalize on our local resources.
