The Albany area is blessed with many young professionals who are emerging leaders. Advancing a career, engaging in community activities and juggling family needs and personal interests isn’t always easy.

Five Millennial professionals agreed to share their stories: from their role in their business to their goals, and what it takes to keep positive momentum on all fronts.

Red Robin As the general manager of the Albany Red Robin, Andrea Bruce said she is never done learning.

“Continued dedication to learning and team member development has been a huge factor to my continued success,” said Bruce, who turned 32 this summer.

Bruce started working as a host for the restaurant chain while in college and continued to work her way up in the company. For the last five years, she was the assistant general manager and was promoted in May to her current position.

As general manager, she oversees operations of the restaurant, which includes, but is not limited to, developing and coaching team members, monitoring food safety procedures, building store sales, and achieving financial goals and standards.

Her goal is always to be ahead of the game so as not to stress over life events, allowing her to focus attention 2

on what is at hand.

“Red Robin being a sponsor for many community activities also allows me to bring my family to community events and bring Red Robin to my passions outside the restaurant,” she said.

As an emerging leader, Bruce constantly questions what she can do to make a situation better.

“I’m constantly looking to see what I can do to change and make those around me better,” she said. “Looking at myself makes it hard to blame others when I have so much control over my situation.”

Her advice to up-and-comers is to not give up when times get tough.

“There will always be people that question and challenge you,” she said.

“I had a passion for the Red Robin and its values and decided to continue my career here after I graduated from college.”

– Andrea Bruce, general manager degree unrelated to the food industry, Bruce was constantly questioned when she would get a “real job.”

“Maybe it wasn’t what I thought I would be doing, but it turned into a great career where I have met some of the best people, whether team members or guests,” she said. “And I get to be near family, be a part of our community, and have the flexibility to do things outside of work that I love.”

Bruce’s predecessor taught her not to rely on usual ways to handle situations but to come up with new ideas and ways. With that in mind, she looks

for outside-the-box answers to fix problems efficiently.

Integrity is a personal core value that helps guide her through life.

“Ultimately I want to just do the right thing and for others around me to have that same value,” she said. “It’s important to be honest in life and do the right thing when no one is watching you.”

Bruce believes one misconception to working with Millennials is expecting them to follow customary paths.

POPULATION With a population of 53,145, Albany is the largest city in Linn County.

The population of the county is approximately 125,575.

“Just like the young people that are entering the work force today, [Millennials] want the next generation to be great and learn and do things the way we did them,” she said. “There will always be potential superstars that rise out of the crowds, and those are the people we need to be excited about and spend our energy developing.”

Albany Sport and Spine Physical Therapy Patient care is the most energizing part of Dr. Erin Erven’s job as clinic director for Albany Sport and Spine Physical Therapy.

“I love working with a patient to figure out where their pain or movement dysfunction is coming from and helping to find the best solution for them,” Erven said. “As a leader, I really love being able to act as a mentor for our newer therapists and share my education and experience as a PT.” Erven, 31, has been married for four years and has a two-year-old daughter and a second child due in October.

She completed her undergraduate degree in exercise and sports science at Oregon State University before attending the University of Colorado for her doctorate in physical therapy.

She began her professional career at Corvallis Sport and Spine Physical Therapy as a staff PT and transitioned to the director role in Albany in 2016.

“I take continuing education classes every year to maintain my PT license, and I also have an additional orthopedic certification that I earned in 2017.”

As clinic director, Erven’s primary role is to provide excellent patient care to a wide variety of orthopedic patients from ages 5 to 95. She also manages the clinic’s day-to-day operations, working with front desk staff, physical therapists, aides and owners, making sure things run smoothly on the administrative side as well as dealing with clinical and insurance questions.

“The transition from staff physical therapist to clinic director definitely comes with additional time and energy commitments outside of patient care,” she said. “I am a highly organized person and thrive in a busy environment. I have an amazing staff that allows me to delegate certain tasks and focus my energy where it is most needed each day. I also prioritize my time with my husband and daughter as well as finding time for regular exercise. Plus, when things are busy, there are plenty of fun things for a two-year-old in a PT clinic!”

Erven feels fortunate to be able to work with two strong female leaders, the owners of the Corvallis and Albany clinics.

“I have known them for over ten years, and they have been instrumental in my transition from college student to PT to clinic director and leader,” she said. “Having strong mentors and resources is really an essential part of becoming an effective leader.”

Erven advises young people entering a career field to find positive role models and mentors as a great way to develop leadership style and skills.

“I have also sought out outside information from books, courses, and leaders in different areas of work,” she said. “You also need to step out of your comfort zone and look for opportunities to lead. Give yourself a chance to shine and learn more about yourself, both your leadership style and the special skills or talents you bring to the table.”

Erven constantly works to improve herself as a physical therapist and as a leader through continuing education courses, books, and continued mentorship from the owners of Sport and Spine. She is going to participate

in Leadership Albany in the fall, and is excited for the chance to build stronger relationships in the city as well as continue to develop her leadership skills.

“I really value hard work and think a strong work ethic will always take you far,” she said. “I am a very empathetic person who genuinely cares about my coworkers and patients, which makes it easier to put in the effort needed for a long day at work or in a complicated situation. I strive to be very dependable for those around me both at work and personally.”

Erven has noticed a lack of interpersonal skills in some Millennials, but has met many “amazing Millennials in this professional setting who have strong communication skills and have a great ability to build relationships with their coworkers and with our patients.”

“A PT must be able to communicate with people of all ages and education levels as well as be able to empathize with people in all walks of life,” she said. “I am fortunate to work with many Millennials who do this exceptionally well!

SnoTemp Cold Storage The desire to complete a task well motivates Willie Lafferty to do his best work.

“Nuance is king,” he said. “View the issue from many perspectives and be responsive, not reactive.”

“I oversee the maintenance of the cold storage facility,” said Lafferty, 32, chief engineer for SnoTemp Cold Storage in Albany.

He advises newcomers to “find the people who are going to be tough on you, the ones that give you the honest feedback that is hard to take. Attempt to fail. This means have lots of thorough and critical thinking in your plan. Ask how it will work and how it will not work.”

Lafferty started along his career path working for SnoTemp in Eugene while in high school.

“I dabbled with many of the necessary skills during that time,” he said. “After, graduating from the University of Colorado. I came back to Eugene.

The first summer back, I worked at SnoTemp. Then enrolled in the fall at Lane Community College for their airframe and powerplant program.

This developed more of the required knowledge I needed.”

Lafferty aims to make systems more efficient at SnoTemp through improvements, design and preventative maintenance.

EDUCATION The Greater Albany Public School system includes 21 schools serving approximately 9,223 students. Santiam Christian Schools has an enrollment of 650.

Linn-Benton Community College and the Linfield College Adult Degree Program offer professional and technical training programs and college transfer courses.

Oregon State University is in neighboring Corvallis.

On-the-job training also propelled Lafferty up his career ladder.

“We have refrigeration equipment to keep rooms at temperatures as low as -20,” Lafferty said. “We use dock levelers to create a smooth transition from semi-trucks to docks for the 11,000-pound forklifts to move the products. Doors between ambient dock and freezer box need to operate.

Lights help us keep accurate inventory and safety. And we also have to stay current with OSHA and federal regulations, along with Albany fire codes.”

Lafferty must stay focused at his job, but his favorite pastime during SnoTemp’s slower season is skiing.

What energizes, engages and empowers him is to use critical thinking to find the best solution to a problem and seeing beyond the obvious.

“I want to leave something better than it was originally designed,” he said.

The most important lesson about leadership he has learned is that there are “three sides to every story and you will never get the full story.”

“For me, keep plugging away,” he said of his steps to create a positive future for himself and the business.

“Each month I pick my three priorities and focus on those, saying ‘no’ to the rest for the month. This reduces scatterbrain and delivers results.”

Lafferty also works continually to understand “right over might.”

“Power becomes abusive,” he said.

“Understand the perspectives of others and trend to decisions of right, not might.”

Of the Millennial generation, Lafferty said, “Every generation in society is

attacked by barbarians – they are called children. This Millennial generation is no different. We grew up in a period of advances in technology, reliable and fast transportation, and a reduced level of world challenges.”

The misconception that many Millennials don’t want challenges stems from not having challenges presented, Lafferty said.

“They will get there,” he said. “They must go forth and find the challenge of being challenged.”

Albany Carpet One Hard work propelled Jake Peterson to being manager of Albany Carpet One. Married to his high school sweetheart, Sadie, 24-year-old Peterson will “outwork any of my competition” to succeed.

“I started in the flooring industry at a young age,” Peterson said. “Starting at about age 14, I would do tear outs of flooring and prep work to make extra money over the weekends and through the summers.”

After graduating from high school, Peterson moved up to installing commercial flooring.

“This has given me a depth of knowledge with both the product and installation side of my business,” he said. “I was fortunate to be able to go to work for my parents’ company when I was 18 years old. Since then I have progressed in both customer service and problem solving. Once we bought another store and hired more employees at the Albany store, I was promoted to manager.”

Peterson’s job description is very fluid and changes rapidly from day to day.

“My card says manager, but what that means is I do just about everything most retail operations face daily,” he said. “I do the pricing for the store. Make sure we have plenty of stocked materials. Deal with installation and installer problems.

Conflict resolution between salesman and installers. Customer satisfaction and quality control.”

Part of Peterson’s job is watching the bottom line to make sure the company stays profitable. He also does the direct repair for insurance claims from Farmers, Allstate and State Farm.

“I try to stay away from the walk-in retail and focus more on contractor/ remodeler business,” he said.

Juggling work and personal time commitments is an everyday balancing act for Peterson, one he is still working on.

– Jake Peterson, manager “I try to make sure that I focus on what I need to be doing,” he said. “While I am at work, I try to keep personal thoughts out of my head. I do the same at home – sometimes this is me turning off my phone and just spending time with my wife while having no distractions.”

Peterson averages about 35 phone calls a day and feels guilty if he is not able to answer or takes too long to get back to a client.

“This is something that drives my wife crazy since we both work such long hours,” he said. “So when we are together, our time is very valuable.

When I am with her, I try hard to put work on the back burner.”

Despite the challenges, Peterson remains highly motivated to see where his potential will take him. Working with his family’s business empowers him.

“I have always feared being looked at as a silver spoon son working for mom and dad,” he said. “I want to make sure that I work hard enough that no one questions how I got where I am.”

In climbing the ladder, the most important lesson about leadership he has learned is patience.

“Patience is highly important because

I work with folks as young as 18 and as old as 73,” Peterson said. “People learn and work at different paces, and in order for them to be their best, they need to be taught and worked with at their individual pace.”

Peterson advises developing leadership style and skills by reading two personal development books a year and to spend as much time possible with other successful people.

“Right now, I’m trying to mature my customer service and conflict resolution skills,” he said. “I feel that no matter how hard you try, something can always go wrong.

I believe that a negative situation is the best opportunity to ‘wow’ a customer with customer service and end a project with smiles all around.”

Peterson believes in honesty, integrity, hard work, and best effort. The biggest misconception others have of his generation is that Millennials are lazy.

“A lot of [Millennials] are actually highly motivated after seeing our parents go through the Great Recession,” he said. “I know for me personally while the economy is strong, I want to save as much as possible for the rainy days.”

Pacific Power Celeste Krueger wears many hats as the regional business manager for Pacific Power.

“I advocate on behalf of the customer and communities and on behalf of Pacific Power,” Krueger said. “One aspect of my position is account management for large industrial and commercial accounts. I manage new and ongoing customer projects, find creative ways to improve reliability, and maintain strong partnerships with all valued customers.

“Utilizing skills I learned from community outreach, marketing and customer engagement, I was able to transition to my current role with a fresh perspective,” she said. “It was invigorating to learn new skills in an industry I hadn’t worked in before, and discover that the synergies between higher education and regional business management were complimentary to each other.”

“That passion for their craft is what inspires me to continue to represent my organization and pursue lasting partnerships within our community,” Krueger said.

The 38-year-old wife to Justin and mother of Violet, 8, and Harper, 5, finds being a full-time professional and mother is a balancing act.

“There are times when my work commitments take a leading role and when family time is my sole focus,” she said. “The support and flexibility of my family is what makes everyone work.”

Krueger challenges herself to take time to learn something new both personally and professionally. She believes in maintaining strong partnerships with customers, understanding their business models, and researching ways to solve problems that might have never been done before.

“If you truly believe in the organization you are working for, you can provide a quality experience for all customers,” Kreuger said. “I believe in the work Pacific Power does and showcase that through every interaction and project I complete.”

“Another important aspect of my position is to provide support to local communities,” she continued. “This is done through sponsorships, participation on local boards, connections with local city governments, and advocating on behalf of local nonprofit organizations who would benefit from grant opportunities from the Pacific Power Foundation. In addition, my role helps support economic growth in the MidWillamette Valley.”

Krueger said she was able to look outside the world of higher education to understand the complex and intriguing world of the utility industry.

“My passion for problem solving and finding innovative solutions to everyday problems is what keeps motivating me to strive for more,” she said. “There is a saying that ‘talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.’

I truly believe in that sentiment.”

Positivity and determinations guide Krueger through her personal and work life.

“My outlook on life is it can never have enough positivity,” she said. “And it took a great sense of determination to move into leadership roles, communicate my worth, and make the decision to transition to a new career. “[Millennials] are nimble and innovative and provide great value to the current workforce,” she said, referring to her generation. “We like the notion of being loyal to an organization and putting in the time and energy to move into leadership roles. I see our generation has a symbol of the future of economic prosperity that brings technological ingenuity and innovative resources.”

SUMMER EVENTS Summer Concerts

City Parks

Albany Historic Carousel

Albany Parks and Recreation operates approximately 35 parks and natural areas, trails covering more than 770 acres, a senior center, preschool, skate park, indoor and outdoor pools and a 12,000-seat outdoor amphitheater. Picnicking, swimming, boating and a variety of activities can be enjoyed in these settings and in county parks.

Visit the Historic Albany Carousel where our talented community of carvers have volunteered over 152,000 hours to create something magical. This carousel has 52 unique hand carved animals ranging from a seven foot plus tall giraffe to a unicorn! Carving began this project in 2003 and it opened in 2017.

Talking Water Gardens

The Albany Regional Museum has Albany memorabilia, photos and artifacts. The Monteith House is one of the most authentically restored homes in Oregon.

Open to the public sunrise to sunset seven days a week, Talking Water Gardens is a public works project that cools treated wastewater before it enters the Willamette River. Managed by the City of Albany’s Wetlands Department, it features soft-surface walking trails, many elevated to give visitors a beautiful view of the natural system and the plants and wildlife that have made this place home. It is located at 577 Waverly Dr. NE.

Sports Albany Parks and Recreation sponsors organized sports, classes and special outings. A very active Boys and Girls Club and the MidWillamette Valley YMCA also offer excellent sporting opportunities.

Linn-Benton Community College and two nearby PAC-12 colleges: Oregon State University in Corvallis and the University of Oregon in Eugene offer major college sporting events.

Antiques Visit our local antique shops downtown or visit Antiques in the Streets, an antique fair held each September.

Historic Home Tours

The Albany Parks and Recreation Department offers two free summer concert series during July and August in Monteith Park, located along the banks of the Willamette River.

River Rhythms features well-known entertainment from around the world on Thursday evenings. The Monday evening concerts, Summer Sounds, feature Northwest entertainers.

Linn County Fair Local agriculture, crafts, and industry are showcased during this countywide event held each July. The fair also showcases top-notch national entertainers, rodeo events and local talent.

Northwest Art & Air Festival More than 35 hot air balloons fill the city’s sky, plus there are Young Eagle flights, demonstrations, artists from around the Northwest selling their artwork, food vendors, Kid’s Art Village and live entertainment.

The three-day event in August is free; $5 charge for parking.

OTHER EVENTS

Twice a year, the Albany Historic Interior Tour Committee invites you to tour several of Albany’s historic homes, churches and museums. The Summer Tour of Homes is always the last Saturday of July, 11 a.m.5 p.m. The Christmas Parlor Tour is the second Sunday in Dec., 2 - 7 p.m.

Theater

Veteran’s Day Parade

Linn Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center seats more than 400 and hosts an array of community and student productions. The Albany Civic Theater (ACT) presents outstanding performances that appeal to all types of audiences.

During the Christmas season, stop and visit Santa at the “North Pole” in the Linn County Expo Center while strolling through an enchanted forest of scenes from favorite books and stories. First two weeks in December.

Albany hosts the largest Veterans Day Parade west of the Mississippi.

It is organized by the Veterans Commemoration Association. The parade features veterans from wars past and present, marching units, military vehicles, and marching bands.
