Today’s business landscape isn’t just about standing out.

It’s about being counted on.

Whether you’re greeting a customer at the front counter, guiding a team through a busy season, or partnering with neighbors in the community, one thing is certain: trust is no longer a nice-to-have. It’s the cornerstone of lasting success.

There was a time when visibility was everything.

We chased likes, clicks, and foot traffic, thinking volume equaled value. But things have shifted.

People are more careful with who they listen to, and even more careful about who they believe.

They’ve seen enough slick ads and hollow slogans. What they want now is simple: “Can I rely on you?”

That question echoes inside our businesses too.

Employees aren’t just looking for a paycheck.

They’re looking for consistency, fairness, and follow-through. When they trust their leaders, ideas flow, teams stay, and workplaces thrive.

But when trust breaks down, even small missteps can ripple into real challenges.

Being an Economic Advocate At the Salem Chamber, we often talk about Business Advocacy, which I have previously highlighted as one of the Salem Chamber Board of Directors’ top priorities this year (see my most recent President’s Message in the Autumn 2025 edition of this publication). Business Advocacy represents the work the Chamber does on behalf of the business community to push for local and state business-friendly policies while also pushing back on legislation and policies that ultimately harm businesses and stifle economic growth.

While this work remains of the utmost importance to us at the Chamber, a group of our leaders and staff were reminded recently by our partner, friend, and Chamber expert, Kyle Sexton, that another one of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce’s primary focuses is Economic Advocacy. This, we understand, is the broader idea that we continue to support local economic growth while finding new ways — big and small, including outside the scope of public policy — to help our fellow businesses.

Before the calendar year turned over and we ventured into 2026, we were celebrating beloved holiday traditions with family and friends. Most of us were likely enjoying family meals together. We bought and received gifts. And we sought comfort in celebrating together, in many ways and locations.

So how does Economic Advocacy fit into these celebrations?

Firstly, Economic Advocacy should make us thankful. Simply taking the opportunity to thank our customers, suppliers, team members, and everyone our businesses serve can and does go a long way.

Perhaps our businesses didn’t grow as we hoped last year, profits were down, or we are still uneasy heading into a new year. We can still be thankful and 6

strive to make each month the best it can be. Join me in remaining thankful for the prospects 2026 brings.

Secondly, Economic Advocacy should make us want to give back. Our City of Salem has many people and businesses in need. The great news is, we have amazing non-profits that are ready to serve those in need. Our community also has many people who can give to these non-profits and businesses to carry them into 2026. So, find the organization and/or business that matches your passions and give and buy abundantly. Join me in finding one non-profit to give to and one small business to support more than you have before.

Lastly, Economic Advocacy should drive us to buy local. This practice is critical to the survival of many of our downtown and local businesses. Our large and publicly traded companies are also vital to the health of our community, but the flavor and heart of our community is the small local businesses.

Let’s continue to prioritize our purchases this year to locally based companies. This needs to be more than just a social media hashtag. Join me in making #SalemChamberBuyLocal a way of life.

I am a small business owner. I take the entrepreneurial risk every day of hiring great team members and serving customers with all our heart.

It is not easy. If you are employed by, manage, or own a small or medium-sized business, you know how challenging it can be. That is why I am asking you to be an Economic Advocate. Courthouse Club Fitness For nearly five decades, Courthouse Club Fitness has been a foundational part of the Salem and Keizer community — a local, independently owned fitness organization built on the belief that exercise should be simple, fun, and something people genuinely look forward to. What began in 1977 as a single racquetball facility on South River Road has grown into five full-service clubs offering spaces, programs, and communities designed for every kind of mover — from firsttime exercisers to lifelong athletes and families of all ages.

A Legacy of Movement and Community Courthouse Club Fitness opened its doors in December 1977 with a modest setup: 10 racquetball courts and a small lobby. Yet, even then, the heart of the business was clear: bring people together through movement. By the end of the first year, the club had grown to around 700 members, and the appetite for community and fitness continued to expand.

As Salem and Keizer transformed — from a combined population of around 68,000 in 1977 to more than 219,000 residents today — Courthouse grew along with them. The organization steadily added pools, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, weight rooms, cardio spaces, and eventually built entire areas dedicated to group fitness. Today, Courthouse offers over 250,000 square feet of group fitness space and hosts more than 920 group fitness classes each month, drawing nearly 18,500 class visits across its five clubs.

From racquetball to cycling, strength training to yoga, and youth programs to Pilates and pickleball, Courthouse has evolved with its members while staying true to its core principle: “Fitness is Better Together.”

Courthouse’s success is reflected in the thousands of members who have achieved healthier, stronger, more confident lives — supported by coaches, trainers, instructors, and a welcoming community.

Finding New Ways to Improve Health Courthouse Club Fitness is on a continual path to evolve and innovate in the delivery of health and fitness. Some might be surprised to learn that Courthouse is providing an employee healthcare plan to dozens of local companies. Its clients for this program, called HealthPass, include Kaufman Homes, Dalke Construction, and Peoples Church, among others.

What started with simple skewered chicken served over rice quickly grew into a full menu inspired by the idea of “good, clean food.” As demand increased — and as beef, veggies, and even a few early beer taps joined the lineup — the greater vision outgrew the original, modest space.

In 2008, Venti’s moved to its current home at 325 Court St NE, where it expanded its footprint and introduced a full kitchen, larger dining area, and the now-iconic Beer Vault (remodeled in 2020). By 2016, another expansion added even more space and a streetlevel bar with an expanded tap list.

Along the way, the core mission has remained unchanged: to serve good, clean food with unique flavor, attitude, and culture.

At its core, Venti’s is more than a restaurant — it’s part of Salem’s rhythm. The team views the city as a heartbeat made up of families, artists, small businesses, and everyday people who gather, share stories, and build community around meals.

HISTORY MAKERS continued Jackson Jewelers - Joined January 1, 1944 Like Capitol Auto Group, Jackson Jewelers is a family-owned icon in the Salem business community, which joined the Chamber the same year it opened its doors, now more than 80 years ago. Founded by watchmaker Holly Jackson shortly after concluding his military service, the business has continued to serve the mid-Willamette Valley with fine jewelry, Swiss watches, custom design, and expert repair services ever since.

During its early years, the store focused on servicing pocket watches, but over time, it expanded into full jewelry retail as its clientele grew. Later, Holly Jackson's sons, Phil and Ralph Jackson, took over the business and introduced Rolex watches to the store's inventory in 1982. Today, the store carries many top brands and maintains a certified, Swiss-trained watchmaker on-site who services luxury timepieces. The business also continues to operate under its founding promise to “go above and beyond to create the best shopping experience for every client,” led by its third-generation manager, Tyler Jackson, and his brother, Brett Jackson.

Blending traditional craftsmanship with modern retailing and a high-touch customer experience, Jackson Jewelers remains one of Salem’s premier family-owned businesses and one of the finest local jewelers in the region. Sherman, Sherman, Johnnie & Hoyt, LLP - Joined January 1, 1949 Originally founded as DeArmond & Young in 1949, Sherman, Sherman, Johnnie & Hoyt, LLP has been one of Salem’s most trusted and respected law firms for over 70 years, serving both individual and business clients. Central Willamette Credit Union Since returning to the Salem community 12 years ago, Salem Chamber Ambassador Sue Wack has become increasingly more involved — not only within the Chamber but also the local business community as a whole — bringing a supportive ability to lift up those around her while leading with determination and purpose.

Sue began attending Chamber Greeters meetings shortly after coming back to Salem, which led her to become an Ambassador just a few years later. By seeing and experiencing the benefits of making connections at events like Greeters for herself and her business, Sue realized that becoming an Ambassador would allow her to help others do the same.

“Being a part of the Chamber of Commerce has allowed me opportunities to connect with my community, and as a result, grow my business,” Sue says. “This Chamber is alive and vibrant. I can’t help but be out and about and run into people I know from the Chamber!”

This year, Sue took on an even larger volunteer leadership role with the Chamber by accepting the position of Ambassador Chair. In this role, Sue will help coordinate Ambassador activity at Chamber events while introducing new Ambassadors to what it means to serve the business community.

“I am happy that I’ve been given the opportunity to take on more responsibility with the Chamber as Ambassador Chair for this year,” Sue says. “As the Chamber grows and evolves to meet the needs of the business community, it has made it necessary to be able to adjust to those needs. I’m honored that they considered me a valuable member to assist in this process.”

As a veteran Ambassador who has played a vital role in nearly every annual, monthly, and regular event or gathering the Salem Chamber offers, Sue is nicely situated and excited to share her experience with her peers, especially new Chamber members and new Ambassadors.

“I strive to bring unity and clarity to the responsibilities of our Ambassadors,” Sue says.

“I love working with our new Ambassadors, as they bring a fresh perspective and are eager to serve.”

An award-winning professional with nearly 30 years of experience in mortgage lending, Sue continues to lead by example, demonstrating how to successfully balance a career with volunteerism and community service. Despite recently transitioning to a new professional role as a Residential Mortgage Loan Officer at Central Willamette Credit Union, Sue has remained engaged with her community outside of the office, while also remaining invigorated by the work she gets to do in the office every day.

“I am excited to help them [Central Willamette] grow this department,” Sue says. “I love helping homebuyers find creative ways to bring their homeownership dreams to life. The credit union offers great rates and programs that offer the flexibility to meet the challenges of today’s market.”

In taking on new roles and challenges in her own professional life, Sue sees a broader potential in others who are taking entrepreneurial risks to make Salem stronger and healthier, along with recognizing the importance of being engaged with the Chamber.

“I see new businesses starting up in Salem, which demonstrates that our community is vibrant,” Sue says.

“With new taxes being proposed that directly affect our businesses, it is extremely important that they have a strong voice advocating for and with them. They have that with the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.”
