4-H Grows Here! What’s the mission of 4-H? To create non-formal, educational opportunities to help youth thrive in a complex and changing world. 4-H aims to help young people, ages 5-19, become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society by providing educational, youth-focused experiences designed to build life skills, support in school learning, and teach employment skills. When did 4-H start? 4-H began in 1902. It was started in Springfield Township, Clark County, Ohio, by educators Liberty Hyde Bailey and Albert B. Graham as a program for local farm children. The first club was called “The Tomato Club” or the “Corn Growing Club”. They used resources and educational materials from Ohio State University’s Agricultural College and Experimental Station. T.A. Erickson of Douglas County, Minnesota, started local agricultural after-school clubs and fairs that same year. What do the 4 “H”s stand for? Originally, there were only 3 “H”s, and they stood for “the HEAD for a wealth of information, the HEART for moral and spiritual strength, and the HANDS for manual dexterity and skill.” In 1908, the 4th “H” was added that stood for “HUSTLE to render ready service, to develop health and vitality.” In 1911, the 4th “H” was changed, and it now pledges “HEALTH to better living.” What’s the story behind the 4-leaf clover? It originally started out as a 3-leaf clover, introduced by O.H. Benson in 1907. The following year, a 4th leaf was added. Jessie Field Shambaugh developed the clover pin with an “H” on each leaf in 1910. In 1911, it became the national symbol for 4-H. What is the support behind the 4-H program? In 1914, Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act, which established the Cooperative Extension Service – of which 4-H is a part. This act ensures that federal and state funds will always be available for Extension work. 4-H is part of the nation’s landgrant university system, designed to extend research and knowledge to people. Here in Michigan, the 4-H program is supported by Michigan State University. When did 4-H start in Michigan? The earliest official records indicate that the first 4-H clubs in Michigan began in 1908 in Mason and Muskegon counties. By 1916, there is evidence that 4-H clubs in Manistee county had become active. How many people are in 4-H? 4-H (c. 1902) is the nation’s largest youth development organization, empowering young people throughout the United States, as the primary youth development program of the Cooperative Extension System of 110 land-grant universities. 4-H reaches every corner of our nation – from urban neighborhoods to suburban schoolyards to rural farming communities. With a national network of more than 6 million youth, 611,800 volunteers, and more than 25 million alumni, 4-H helps shape youth to move our country and the world forward in ways that no other youth organization can. In the state of Michigan over 219,000 youth and over 15,000 adult volunteers are involved in 4-H programs. Some are associated with the traditional 4-H club setting, while others are busy with after school and community service activities.

What can you do in 4-H? Just about anything! 4-H projects cover a wide range of subjects and possibilities. You can learn more about how your government works, get involved in performing arts, study the environment, take up shooting sports, get physical (and get healthy!), lead others in community service, make great friends with an animal, plant a garden, or take up woodworking. There are actually more than 180 project titles included in the official 4-H curriculum! Why Join? The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, a decade-long study shows that 4-H youth excel beyond their peers. They are: • four times more likely to make contributions to their communities (grades 7-12); • two times more likely to be civically active (grades 8-12); • two times more likely to make healthier choices (grade 7); • two times more likely to participate in Science, Engineering and Computer Technology programs during out-of-school time (grades 10-12); • and, 4-H girls are two times more likely (grade 10) and nearly three times more likely (grade 12) to take part in science programs compared to girls in other out-of- school activities. The Oceana County 4-H Council supports our area youth by providing youth development and enrichment activities, as well as 4-H membership fee and event scholarships. The funds received through the sales of our county plat books supports these efforts for our youth. The Oceana County 4-H program provides hands on, educational activities and opportunities for youth ages 5-19 designed to promote positive youth development. In 2019, over 400 youth were served. Youth development and enrichment activities included 4-H camps at Michigan State University, animal science clinics & shows, youth workshops at the 4-H Kettenun Center and Youth Activity workshops provided by our Youth Council.

4-H Horse Program Oceana County 4-H Horse Developmental Committee (HDC) oversees the 4-H Horse Project. For voting purposes, it is made up of two members from each 4-H horse club, one adult and one teen. However, everyone in the horse project is invited to attend the meetings so we can get as much input as possible. The committee makes all of the rules and guidelines for this project and is also in charge of all of the ribbons, awards, trophies, planning and organizing of the horse camp, shows, tack sale and making recommendations for judges for the fair. It supports itself financially through the horse shows and other fundraisers. This committee also provides a scholarship for any horse project member attending 4-H Exploration Days at Michigan State University. 4-H Market Livestock To participate in the 4-H Market Livestock Program, youth are required to adhere to project rules and regulations established for each animal project. We encourage youth who might be thinking about joining the 4-H Market Livestock Program to review the project rules and if they should have any questions, please feel free to contact our office at 231-873-2129.
