CONGRATULATES THE 29 TH INTERNATIONAL MARITIME HALL OF FAME HONOREES
Griff Lynch • Brian Buckley McAllister
Jeremy Nixon • Semiramis Paliou and Bill Shea
The most significant changes to maritime transportation and logistics over the past two-and-a-half years have been their impact worldwide and the public’s understanding of the importance of these industries. Whether we liked it or not, the supply chain was forced into an assessment of each operational node impacting the day-today movement of goods. Fluidity and resiliency became trade buzzwords and ambitious standards were set to meet public demand. Industry leaders who viewed the public as key stakeholders and not just customers transformed the supply chain to a value chain, including safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability as key components in the movement of goods. These are the leaders we honor tonight. We honor these individuals for their contributions and thank them for their ongoing innovation to develop a new international transportation normal for today and the future.
In 1993, the Board of the Maritime Association of the Port of New York & New Jersey created the International Maritime Hall of Fame to honor those visionaries who, through excellence in their company, organization, or services, best exemplify the qualities of forward thinking that guide our industry now and in the future.
This year the following areas were considered for persons with significant accomplishments: international container carrier, international vessel operator, terminal operator, non-container steamship carrier (bulk, liquid, or oil), ocean transportation intermediary, cruise industry stevedore, cargo handling, port logistics, maritime negotiations and labor, Class I railways, supply chain collaboration.
The Ship’s Lookout Statue is presented to people who are true transportation visionaries. Funds raised from the Awards event promote advocacy and educational awareness for the industry.
This year, the International Maritime Hall of Fame inducts five outstanding leaders:

As the Executive Director of the Georgia Ports Authority, Griff has the great privilege of leading 1,800 employees in Savannah, Brunswick, Bainbridge and Chatsworth, Georgia.
During his 34-year career in the industry, he has been blessed to have had many great team members and mentors who have inspired and guided him throughout his career.
After graduating Maritime College, Griff began his career with TFL. He then joined the Sea-land Elizabeth Marine Department in 1992. He takes great pride in those first years at Berth-88, working with phenomenal people in management and the ILA, where he learned the importance of teamwork and partnership, which would shape the rest of his career.
Maersk Line acquired Sea-Land in late 1999 and Griff stayed on, moving his family to Virginia as Port Manager for APM Terminals. During his nine years in Virginia, Griff had the awesome responsibility of leading an incredible project team which designed and developed the APM Terminals Virginia facility. He ultimately became the Director of the new terminal before being named VP of Sales for APM Terminals North America.
After 16 years with the Sea-Land/APM organization, Griff came back to the Port of NY/NJ as VP of Operations for Global Container Terminals. During his tenure at GCT, Griff worked at New York Container Terminal and built the project team for the GCT Bayonne terminal expansion.
The highlight of his career came in 2011, when Griff joined the Georgia Ports Authority as Chief Operating Officer. He held this position for five years before being named Executive Director in 2016. During his tenure, the world-class GPA team has experienced record cargo volumes and invested $2.7 billion in capital projects, leading them to be recognized as one the most successful ports in the country.
In 2021, Griff was recognized “Alumnus of the Year” by his alma mater, the State University of New York Maritime College (SUNY). Then, in 2022 he was named Georgia Trend Magazine’s “Georgian of the Year.”
Griff is currently a board member of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) and the National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE).
He holds a Bachelor of Science from SUNY Maritime and has undertaken executive development courses at Cranfield University in England, and the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland. Griff and his wife Denise are proud graduates of the Leadership Georgia class of 2018 –Best Class Ever!
(This profile was submitted by the recipient.)
“Under Lynch’s leadership, the GPA has seen record cargo volumes and has continued to invest in infrastructure and equipment to support future growth.”
Brian Buckley McAllister began his career as a deckhand, working in various McAllister Towing operations from Louisiana to Maine. In 1998, he rejoined the company as Vice President General Counsel. In 2012, Buckley was named President and in 2021 he became Chairman.
Founded in 1864, McAllister Towing is one of the oldest and largest maritime transportation service companies in the United States. Buckley’s Great Great Grandfather, James McAllister, started with a sail lighter, transporting cargo with wind power throughout the Port of New York. Since then, the company has participated in numerous marine innovations, from steam engines to the first TIER IV reduced-emission engines to be put in ship assist tugs in America. Today, McAllister employs 800 of the finest maritime professionals in the industry and operates over 60 tugboats along with barges, crew boats and ferries. The company is currently building three more tractor tugs, capable of performing tethered escorts and certified for generating 80 metric tons of bollard pull, in order to assist ultra large container ships. The company has over a dozen offices along the East Coast and Caribbean, from Maine to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Buckley is also President of The Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company, founded in 1883 by P.T. Barnum. The ferry carries over 400,000 cars and 800,000 passengers across Long Island Sound every year.
The ferry company is also building a new TIER IV ferry in order to improve and expand its service, expected to be delivered in 2024.
Mr. McAllister is a long-time member of the Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey. He serves on the boards of Steamship Mutual P&I Club, the Area Maritime Security Committee for New York and New Jersey, the Coast Guard Foundation, the American Bureau of Shipping, and the Seamen’s Church Institute. He previously served on the board of the American Waterways Operators and was Chairman in 2013. He is admitted to practice law in New York, California, and a number of federal jurisdictions.
Buckley and his wife, Beth Morrow, live in Brooklyn, NY and are proud parents to two children, Rowan and Janet. Buckley enjoys playing music and performs with the band @NewYeller.
“Founded in 1864, McAllister
Towing is one of the oldest and largest maritime transportation service companies in the United States.”
Jeremy began his seafaring career in 1979 with “Bank Line” where he qualified as a 2nd Mate after four years of global trading on “tween deck” general cargo vessels (including calls at Red Hook, Brooklyn), and studies at South Shields Marine & Technical College. Being at sea taught him many valuable life lessons and gave him a broader understanding of the maritime industry. He then completed a BSc in Maritime Commerce at Cardiff University and subsequently, an MBA at Warwick University.
He joined the P&O Group at the Port of Felixstowe, and then P&O Containers in London and Singapore. Following the company’s merger with Nedlloyd in 1996, he moved to Hong Kong and then to the USA in 1998. There he was based out of their NA regional headquarters in East Rutherford, NJ. Four years later, Jeremy moved back to London. In 2006, he joined Maersk’s global headquarters in Copenhagen after their acquisition of P&O Nedlloyd. After serving two years with Maersk, Jeremy moved back to London in 2008 to head up NYK Group’s container business in Europe and Africa. He was then transferred to Singapore in 2010 to establish NYK’s new global liner head office. This later led to the initiation and creation of Ocean Network Express (ONE), through the consolidation of K Line, NYK and MOL’s container shipping businesses in 2018. Today ONE is a major global container shipping company, with a balance sheet of USD 30 Bn and is active in 140 countries in the world.
Working with a team of highly professional and experienced staff, Jeremy regularly reminds his colleagues that ONE should be “big enough to survive but still small enough to care.”
Jeremy has always had a strong passion for anything related to maritime and shipping. As CEO of ONE, Jeremy has contributed to a number of cross industry initiatives related to sustainability, safety and crew welfare. Jeremy is also Co-Chair of the World Shipping Council (WSC). Additionally, he led the company through the global pandemic, ensuring that ONE’s operations remained fully functional while also keeping employee’s welfare fully in mind.
His wife Tina lives with him in Singapore, and their daughter Natasha, who was born in New York, is in her final year of study at Edinburgh University in the UK.
“As CEO of ONE, Jeremy has contributed to a number of cross industry initiatives related to sustainability, safety and crew welfare.”
Semiramis Paliou’s passion for the shipping industry was instilled in her from a young age, having been born into a family with a long-standing tradition in the sector. In fact, her father, Symeon Palios, was inducted into the Maritime Association International Maritime Hall of Fame in 2016.
Semiramis is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Diana Shipping Inc., a leading global shipping company that specializes in the transportation of dry cargo goods. She has been with the company since 2015, serving in various positions including Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and member of the Executive Committee. In addition to her role at Diana Shipping, Ms. Paliou also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Diana Shipping Services S.A. the wholly owned ship management company.
She began her career as a trainee ship surveyor at Lloyd’s Register of Shipping where she was assigned field postings in Spain and Finland. Her experience at Diana Shipping Agencies S.A. further solidified her passion for the field, and Semiramis has since held numerous leadership positions throughout her career. These positions include Director and President of Alpha Sigma Shipping Corp. and Head of Operations, Technical, and Crew at Diana Shipping Services S.A.
Semiramis holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College, London, and an MSc in Naval Architecture from University College, London. She has also completed several executive education programs at Harvard Business School, including “Finance for Senior Executives,” “Authentic Leader Development,” and a certificate program on “Sustainable Business Strategy.”
Semiramis is also actively involved in various industry organizations and committees. She currently serves as the Chairperson of HELMEPA and Vice-Chairperson of INTERMEPA, organizations dedicated for the last 40 years to promoting the protection of our seas through education, activities, and projects for our seafarers and the broader society. Under her leadership HELMEPA now focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals as defined by the United Nations, to promote social, economic and environmental sustainability.
She is also the Vice president of the Greek committee of Det Norske Veritas, a member of the Greek committee of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, and the Greek committee of Bureau Veritas. Moreover, Semiramis is a member of the board of directors of the UK P&I Club, the Union of Greek Shipowners, and the Global Maritime Forum.
Outside of work, Semiramis enjoys spending time with her husband Aristidis and their three sons, and they call Athens their home.
“Our legacy preserves our culture, inspires our people and creates value for the future.”
One would be challenged to name an executive working in the US transportation industry who has a longer, more impactful track record than Bill Shea. Mr. Shea has been the Chief Executive Officer of DCLI and an investor in the company since March 2012. In this role, Mr. Shea is instrumental in shaping the company’s strategic vision and facilitating the acquisition of major legacy chassis fleets while maintaining oversight of the company’s growth and financial performance.
Mr. Shea began his career in the transportation leasing Industry in 1979 with Itel Rail Corporation leasing railcars to short line and Class 1 railroads. In 1984, Mr. Shea co-founded Kelley Transportation Services marketing intermodal equipment manufactured by Stoughton Trailers. Mr. Shea also co-founded Bay Cities Leasing, creating a pool of 15,000 piggyback trailers servicing the rail industry. In 1994, Bay Cities was selected to manage the first domestic container and chassis pool, called EMP, for Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern with Mr. Shea serving as the pool’s Program Manager. The EMP Program, through its affiliation with REZ-1 (now Blume Global), developed the first reservation and billing systems for intermodal equipment and continues to manage domestic 53’ containers and chassis for Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern and CSX rail networks today.
Mr. Shea oversaw the creation of DCLI, formerly the chassis leasing division of Maersk. He was the thoughtleader behind the creation of the Pool of Pools, the gray daily-use chassis pool that operates in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Mr. Shea engineered DCLI’s acquisition of REZ-1 and IAS to provide asset management and logistics software services to railroads, ocean carriers, logistics companies, motor carriers and BCOs.
Mr. Shea serves on the Board of Directors of DCLI and is Chairman of the Blume Global Board. He served on JB Hunt’s Board in 2009-2010 and on the Board of the IICL. He combined his passions for wine and charities founding three charity wine auctions, which have raised over $40M for children’s causes. He currently sits on the San Francisco Family House board, an 80-unit facility that houses families whose children are undergoing treatment for life-threatening illnesses at UCSF Hospital in Mission Bay.
Mr. Shea graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, with a degree in Economics. He lives in San Francisco with his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth. They are the proud parents of two adult children, Allyson and Austin.

It is the mission of the Maritime Association of the Port of NY/NJ to serve the commercial maritime industry in the NY/NJ region by monitoring and disseminating data regarding vessel activity to its members and the public, to act as an advocate for the commercial maritime interests of the Port at the municipal, state, and federal level, and to promote the safety of navigation, the security of maritime assets, the sustainability of the marine environment, and the competitiveness of port services.
Since 1873, Maritime Association of the Port of New York has been the primary voice for the commercial maritime industry for our great Port. We were initially organized as a Marine Exchange to monitor vessel arrival/departure/berthing information and to share vital information about maritime operations in the port.
While we still perform the functions of a Marine Exchange, our mission has expanded so that we are now the primary advocate for the commercial maritime industry in our port, and also perform as a trade association representing our over 500 paid members to ensure the safety of navigation, the security of marine assets, the sustainability of the marine environment, and the competitiveness of our marine services.

When it comes to driving change and innovation, experience matters. As GPA’s Executive Director, Griff Lynch brings more than 30 years of operational and commercial expertise to the team. It’s an exciting time to be at the helm of the nation’s third-busiest container gateway and the second-busiest auto port complex in Savannah and Brunswick, respectively. These global gateways serve key markets across the U.S. We congratulate Griff on his well-deserved induction into the Maritime Hall of Fame.
