2016 is in the books...
As we close out the calendar year, I would like to thank the MAPGA membership for a tremendous year in 2016. The year was highlighted by PGA Professionals throughout the section continuing to be the leaders in growing the game, giving back to the community, and playing this great game at a high level.
I would like to specifically recognize all of our Professionals that participated in PGA Junior League and our 206 teams that made us the largest of the 41 Sections involved with PGA Junior League. I would also like to thank everyone who donated food or cash at a Drive Out Hunger event during either a Section or Chapter meeting. Lastly, let me offer special congratulations to Jimmy Flippen, Ricky Touma, and Joanna Coe on winning our three Omega Player of the Year awards. Earlier this month your Board of Directors and staff spent two days in a Planning Session for 2017. It is always exciting to talk about big ideas and areas that we can improve on as a Section. I would like to share some topics that were discussed. Education – While the Teaching Summit continues to be successful, we hope to gain more traction with our 2nd Annual Employment Summit as well as general education opportunities that fall outside of the teaching arena. Also, the Board is currently looking into updating the format at Section meetings to include more interaction and outside speakers that could facilitate positive conversation with peers. Since our members’ time is extremely valuable we want our Section meetings to be more beneficial and something unique. Foundation – The board has approved hiring Sterling Foundation Management for 2017 to help us focus on creating a long term strategic plan for our Foundation. With their help we hope to put in place community programs, attract corporate partners, and help us create overall governance for our MAPGA Foundation. Be on the lookout for more information about this relationship throughout next year. Tournaments – With guidance from our Tournament Committee, we are continuing to look for ways to make our events more fun and grow more in the Pro-Am space. Our tournament survey was overwhelmingly positive with regards to adding more Pro-Ams. If you have a potential sponsor that might be interested in a Pro-Am event or Series, please contact any board member or the Section staff. Based off its success, the board agreed to again subsidize lunch at the two National Car Rental Pro-Ams and the Family Picnic at the Section Championship. In closing, please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about what the Section is doing, how to get involved, or new ideas. We will have elections in Fall of 2017 so we ask that you consider volunteering for your Section or Chapter governance. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for representing the membership so well in 2016 and I look forward to serving all of you again in 2017. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! 2017 PGA of America Annual Meeting New York, N.Y.
In November, the MAPGA was well represented at the 100th Annual Meeting in New York City. The week was highlighted by MAPGA member Steve Greiner being awarded the Patriot Award and the national delegation electing Jim Richerson from Whistling Straits as the next Secretary of the PGA of America. Some of the other events included a fireside chat with Jack Nicklaus, a panel discussion with staff members from the NBA, MLS, and USOC, and a Q&A with the Officers and CEO of the PGA of America.
