Ratanda community makes a Move For Health! The Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture came to the Ratanda township in Sedibeng to host the Move For Health 5km walk. Residents of all ages joined by celebrity actress and fitness coach Khabonina Qubeka (leading from the front). Move For Health is an active lifestyle by World health Organization (WHO) Global activity taking place annually (10th May) with the goal of encouraging healthy Lifestyle and active recreation. It serves also as an all-year, daily active programme encouraging people to step up and take charge of their health and wellness. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the event was down-sized and health protocols were observed.

Ekurhuleni warns of housing allocation scam! The City of Ekurhuleni has warned the public about scammers who are soliciting money from residents claiming to put them ahead of the city’s waiting list for serviced stands.

The city’s MMC for Human Settlements, Lesiba Mpya said the scammers claim that they have authority to allocate houses and serviced stands, and in some incidents impersonate him. MMC Mpya said the city is investigating cases where people have been defrauded.

“There are scammers impersonating me and charging residents R5 000 for serviced stands. I assure residents that serviced stands and RDP (government subsidy) houses are not for sale and my office is not charging anyone for land allocation or housing units.” The MMC said the RDP housing and serviced stands allocation is conducted through community consultative process wherein city officials and ward councillors visit rightful beneficiaries in their communities to inform them of stages of allocations.

Johannesburg property owners whose municipal accounts are in arrears have been given a chance to make amends with the City. They can apply for the City’s improved debt rehabilitation programme, which offers amnesty to those afflicted by the Covid-19 lockdown. The newly introduced relief measures are designed to ease the financial burden on ratepayers amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Finance MMC, Cllr Jolidee Matongo says the threshold of property value that qualifies for debt relief has increased from R600 000 to R1.5 million. Owners have until Saturday, 31 July to apply.

R350 GRANTS STILL BEING PAID

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) hereby requests cooperation from the recipients of Special COVID-19 R350 grant with regards to payment dates. The agency has advised all R350 beneficiaries who have applied but have not yet been paid, that their money shall be paid to them and communication thereof be sent via sms. End of April 2021 only marked the closing of the previous extension, meaning no new application will be accepted for R350 grant beyond April 2021 as per the President announced that the extension was from February to April 2021.

ECD RELIEF FUNDS WILL BE PAID All Early Childhood Development (ECD) services that have applied and meet the criteria for the ECD Employment Stimulus Relief Fund (ESRF), prior to the closing date will receive their payments soon. The Department of Social Development (DSD) said the payments will be received in the next few weeks. The department said all provinces have now engaged their Provincial Treasury’s for roll-overs and this process is currently underway. In addition, the department also noted with concern that some people have incorrectly said that there has been no communication and that no ECD service has been paid. The DSD added that it has actually made some payments already. The department encouraged ECD services to review the status of their application using their reference number on www. ecd.gov.za, and should they need to make any further enquiries, these can be directed to ecd@dsd.gov.za or ecdstlmulus@dgmt.co.za.

The City of Johannesburg paid a fitting tribute to the first-post apartheid, democratically elected executive mayor Ntate Issac Mogase. The funeral, observing strict health protocol due to the pandemic, was held at the Bryanston Catholic Church on Thursday, May 6. Speaker of Council Nonceba Molwele declared the funeral of the late Isaac Mogase an official Civic Funeral which is an official local government funeral to honour the lives of important people of significance and their contribution to the City of Joburg. News of Ntate Mogase’s passing was made public on April 28, a day after the country celebrated the anniversary of the 1994 elections which bought about a democratic state. He served as the executive mayor of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan from 1995 until 2000. The current executive mayor, Councillor Geoff Makhubo, pictured inset, addressed the mourners in a honorary eulogy for the stalwart of the African National Congress (ANC).

With the focus being to radically change their lives, so that their children and grandchildren will participate in society on an equal footing. Because

of men like Ntate Mogase, cities like Johannesburg are an economic hub where people from all over the continent – and dare I say, the world – come looking for economic opportunities. The freedoms we enjoy today as black African city dwellers are because he showed us that it is indeed possible. He told us that they are ours, and never again will they be taken from us,” said mayor Makhubo. A well-orchestrated parade was conducted by members of the Johannesburg Metro Police, Traffic and Emergency Services. The group lined up the streets, marching alongside the funeral procession as it took Ntate Mogase to his final resting place. LIFE AND TIMES

The late Mogase born on 25 January 1934. He joined the ANC Youth League in the 1950s and was antiapartheid activist since then. He was one of the leaders of the Soweto Crisis Committee in the 1980s, working alongside Reverend Frank Chikane and Nthato Motlana. He was elected Mayor of the Johannesburg Metro Council in 1995, serving one tern in office until 2000. After hearing of his passing, Reverend Chikane took to Twitter to send his condolences. “Condolences to the Mogase family at the loss of the Soweto Veteran of the struggle & first mayor of JHB after 1994 democratic elections. Ntate Isaac Mogase served his people with dignity & showed a way of running a clean gov that delivers results for people!” The late, first mayor of Johannesburg is survived by his wife Mme Netta Mogase; his children (Thabo, Mutle and Tshidi), grand children and great grand children.

Former SARS auditors arrested for dodging taxes! The Johannesburg Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team recently arrested two former South African Revenue Service (SARS) auditors.

The arrests were for alleged tax evasion worth approximately R321 million. The auditors – Corah Madlepollo Kooko (39) and Noluthando Sipokazi Mbanga (45) – and their runner, Mndolozi Mncube (44) have been charged for tax fraud in contravention of the Value Added Tax Act, as well as Customs and Excise Act. The latter had an actual loss of over R277 million. Of this, R44 million had already been recovered through investigation in conjunction with SARS. He said the Hawks investigation uncovered that the syndicate involves more than twenty individuals and various companies. “Taxpayers, runners, SARS current and former employees, as well as bank employees were also caught up in the web of deceit. Most of the fraudulent invoices were uploaded from the SARS branch in Randfontein where some of the implicated suspects were based,” he said. The Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court granted the trio R10 000 bail each and the case was postponed to July 13 pending further investigation.

City of Joburg empowers students with internships

The City of Johannesburg has signed a partnered with the South West Gauteng TVET College (SWC) to provide 80 students with experiential training. The programme will last for 18 months. After the training, the students are expected to be having the necessary workplace experience to successfully compete in today’s job market. The induction ceremony took place at the Metro Centre Building in Braamfontein on Monday, May 10. The training is SETA accredited and learners will be getting stipends during the course of their training. The training also forms part of the students to obtain their qualifications. MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services in the City, Cllr Loyiso Masuku and acting principal of the college signed the Memorandum of Understanding as part of the event. Speaking to students, MMC Masuku has encouraged the beneficiaries to not let anything stand in their way as they are the future. “You are the most important people because one day you must be the leaders in this City. Partnerships like this test the commitments that governments make. This is bearing fruit based on the commitments that we made as the governing party led by the executive mayor Cllr Geoff Makhubu,” said Masuku.

She said one of the commitments is empowering young people. The MMC also shared her utmost respect for the work done by TVET (Technical, Vocational Education and Training) colleges like SWC. “Although I am a graduate from a Technikon, my high school was a technical high school. So I have an appreciation of what it means from an environment where you have to get the skills and the training practically,” she said. The City has an annual budget of R46 million that has made it possible for over 700 young people to be employed as interns across various departments. Some of the benefiting students spoke to Mapepeza on their excitement for getting a chance to work in the City. Nhlanhla Coka (23) is studying Marketing Management says that he is looking forward to the opportunity to get workplace experience and kickstart his career working in Marketing. Public Management student, Mishack Khoza (26) feels great as this will help him achieve his diploma. He aspires to work in the City as a Head of Department. Avhatakali Rasilingwana (27) says that he has been dying to get a job and the internship will help him advance his career in Financial Management. “Thank you to the college for educating me and the City for giving us the opportunity to get work,” he said.

Ready for the vaccine? Local newspaper publisher and TV star, Ntate Kgotlaesele Ranaka visited the Gauteng Health department marquee set up at the Leondale Park. He is one of many elderly resident who have gone for a check-up and get his name registered on the Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS). Citizens aged from 60 years and older have been called to register to receive their COVID-19 vaccine jab. This month, government begins Phase 2 of the vaccination rollout programme will target vulnerable groups who are 60 years and older.

IEC announces 2021 municipal election voter registration date!

The Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced voter registration for the October Local Government Elections will be held on the weekend of 17-18 July 2021. In a statement, the Commission said on the weekend all 23 146 voting stations around the country will open from 8am to 5pm to assist new voters to register and existing voters to check and, where necessary, update their registration details.

In the lead-up to this weekend, the IEC said it would embark on a nationwide voter education and awareness campaign. This, it said, would be to encourage all eligible voters to make sure they are ready to participate in the elections scheduled to be held on 27 October 2021. “This campaign will span a variety of multimedia platforms including television, radio, outdoor and digital media along with targeted interventions aimed specifically at young, first-time voters. These will include registration initiatives at schools, tertiary education campuses and other opportunities,” reads the statement. IEC said the 17-18 July weekend would be the only general voter registration opportunity for voters to register and check their registration at their voting stations. “However, on-going voter registration will continue during working hours at local IEC offices until the proclamation of the elections,” they said. In addition, registered voters will still be able to amend their registration details through the “Click, Check, Confirm” functionality on the website of the Electoral Commission. The facility was intro-

duced in 2018 and has been used by over 350 000 voters to update their details. HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE In order to register as a voter, citizens must be at least 16-yearsold, a South African in possession of a valid South African ID document – either a green barcoded ID book or a smartcard ID. “Voters are reminded that they must be registered at a voting station in the ward in which they are ordinarily resident and must provide an address or detailed description of a place of residence. However, proof of address (e.g. in the form of a utilities account) is not required for registration.” The IEC said voters visiting a voting station in person to register or update their details should wear a mask or appropriate face covering and observe social distancing. Health protocols to be observed! “Hand sanitizing facilities as well as stationery will be provided at each voting station. Voters wishing to bring their own pen are encouraged to do so even though pens will be provided and sanitized routinely,” the IEC said. Eligible voters can find out more about where, when and how to register by visiting the Electoral Commission website at www.elections.org.za. From June the LGE 2021 Contact Centre (0800 11 8000) will also be available to assist voters via phone and email (info@elections. org.za). City helps elderly to signup for vaccines at paypoints! The City of Ekurhuleni will assist residents aged 60 years or older to register on the COVID-19 Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS). The system is now open for registration of the elderly as announced by the National Department of Health.

Ekurhuleni’s health practitioners will work with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to target social grant pay points, and churches to register citizens aged 60 years and older who wish to be next in line to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Services Cllr Nomadlozi Nkosi said the City wanted to ensure that no one who wish to be vaccinated was left out from registering on the EVDS, regardless of their access to internet connection. “Our health practitioners are coordinating with the ward-based outreach team members, community development workers and community support programme personnel to assist in registering the elderly during their daily door-to-door campaigns,” MMC Nkosi said. Residents who can register by themselves but do not have internet connection, are encouraged to use the free Wi-Fi available at the

City’s libraries, clinics and Customer Care Centres.

1. Make sure you have internet access, as you will need a smartphone, a tablet or a computer. 2. Connect to the internet and go to https://vaccine.enroll.health.gov. za/.The welcome screen will guide you through the steps. 3. Follow the instructions and put in all the details the system asks for. 4. When you are finished, the system will send an SMS to the phone number you provided. This means that the system now has your details in a queue to be scheduled for your vaccine. 5. You will then receive an SMS with a date and the place where you will be vaccinated. You will be sent to the vaccination centre that is closest to your home. Some may be directed to their places of work. 6. If you have problems you 1may contact the COVID-19 Hotline at 0800 029 999. 7. Citizen will be provided with a proof of vaccination card and receive a confirmation SMS on their phone.

Relay Kings bring home the gold!

Team South Africa recently won the 4X100m relays at the World Athletic Relays at the Silesia Stadium in Poland. Thando Dlodlo, Gift Leotlela, Akani Simbine and Clarence Munyai (pictured above)outran the world best sprinters to secure first position in the relay finals. The SA relay team in Poland went on to win the race which was so close as they went on to beat the South Americans to the line in just 0.01 seconds. “The win becomes a massive

confidence booster as the team prepares and heads to the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan that are due to commence later in the year. This team win surely gives the county confidence that we are indeed ready and due to receive a medal at the upcoming Olympics summer games which was delayed by a year due to the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic. Congratulations!,” said the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture in a statement. President Ramaphosa congratulated the team’s victory on Twitter, saying: “Congrat-

ulations to #TeamSouthAfrica for securing our first ever gold medal and making us proud at the @WorldAthletics #WorldRelays Championships.” The World Athletic Relays is an international track and field sporting event held by World Athletics where teams from around the world compete in relay races, some of which are not part of the standard Olympic programme. About 17 athletes were selected to compete for South Africa this year.

New Bafana Bafana coach has landed!

Hugo Broos has arrived in South Africa and he was great hopes for the national team. The Belgianborn coach was appointed by the South African Football Association in the beginning of May. In 2017, Broos led the Cameroon national squad to victory at the African Cup of Nations Tournament. Speaking after his appointment, Broos said his first priority would be to build a

completely new Bafana Bafana team that will make huge statement in coming major global tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.

‘’My main focus will be to weave in new players who have hunger and desire to achieve things. Young players are ambi-

tious and want to prove a point. I need to start from there because I want to build a strong Bafana Bafana side for the future,” he added. He said the impending postponement of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers from next month to September this year will give him more time to prepare his team for Qatar 2022 where Bafana Bafana are in the same group with Zimbabwe, Ghana and Ethiopia.

Hugo’s first official assignment will be the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers which starts in September. South Africa is in Group G, together with Ghana, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia and kick-off their campaign with an away match against Zimbabwe in September this year.
