News NRCS widens recall of ‘tin fish’ products!

The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) has ordered all formal wholesalers, retailers and informal traders to remove and stop selling 400g pilchards in tomato sauce and 400g pilchards in chili sauce with immediate effect. These products are popularly known as ‘tin fish’ in the township and rural communities.

This follows the outcome of an investigation the NRCS conducted, which revealed a deficiency in the canning process.

The affected products bear the markings starting with ZST29 and ZSC29 on top of the cans.

Addressing the media in Tshwane on February 24, the Food and Associated Industries General Manager at the NRCS, Meisie Katz, said they are recalling all products packaged in June 2019.

Katz explained that during the packaging of the affected products, they discovered that during the process of the sauce filling step, an incision took place, which makes the cans leak after some time.

She explained that there is no problem with the content, but the problem is with the packaging of the content.

Truck robbed at N3 freeway! Suspects still at large!

An armed robbery and attempted murder case docket was opened by the Heidelberg Police,this is after a truck driver robbery along N3 Freeway.

The incident, occurred at the N3 De Hoek Plaza direction Durban on during the midnight hours on February 21.

“The 67 year old truck driver and his crew were driving from Boksburg in Gauteng to Durban in the truck that carries cars. After passing De Hoek Plaza, they stopped to check the ropes that tied the car on the truck. Suddenly the driver heard a gunshot.

He locked himself in the truck, but suspects smashed the door widow glass, pointed him with a fiream and ordered him to go out and took him to the open the veld. He was searched and suspects took his money. In the truck, they took money also and shot the crew member on the leg. Suspects disappeared into the bushes and are unknown,” reported Heidelberg police spokesperson, Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate.

The injured victim was taken to Heidelberg hospital for medical treatment and further transferred to Thelle Mokgoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus for further treatment.

The affected products were manufactured in 2019 by West Point Processors, based in Cape Town and have been distributed nationally to various retailers across the country.

Katz said the signs of the affected products show after three to six months from the packaging date.

“Any can leaking can compromise the safety of consumers. We are recalling them. They should not be in the market,” Katz said.

• West Point Food safety is a priority for the NRCS and the organisation is engaging all role players to ensure that the affected products are removed from the market to protect consumers against unsafe products.

According to Katz, the manufacturer has already started the recall and the NRCS will continue to monitor the process with all the other wholesalers and retailers, including the informal market, to ensure that the process is handled efficiently.

Shoprite is one of the retailers that has urged consumers to check their food cupboards and return the recalled product to its stores for a refund.

The NRCS regulates the manufacture, production and treatment of canned fish and fishery products as part of the Compulsory Specifications (VC8014).

All canned fish and fishery products that are manufactured in the Republic of South Africa are inspected and released by the NRCS for trade, according to regulatory protocols.

Consumers, who have purchased the products, are urged to check the code. If it starts with ZST29 or ZSC29, they must return it for a full refund.

Staff caught with stolen work items worth R150,000! Other suspects still on the run!

Ratanda Police arrested a security guard employee possession of stolen properties and burglary. The incident occurred at the Heidel-Rock Club in Heidelberg Industrial Area on February 23 during the night.

“The Business owner was welcomed by the shock of his life when he opened and was greeted by the ransacked and empty business. On checking around, he detected that entrance was gained over the roof. He immediately get into the personal investigations that lead to connect an employee who works as security guard in the premises. Police were immediately called further investigations and arrest,” said police spokesperson, Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate.

A quick response by Warrant/Officer Jacques Bierman ans his Crime Prevention Team; joined by the Ratanda SAPS Constable Vincent Pandzeka, Cst. Tshepo Baloyi and Cst. Victor Khoza, led to the discovery of the stolen properties at Mvulane Street Ext. 23 Ratanda Location.

The items seized by the cops were identified as the same items stolen during business burglary at the Heidel Rock Club on the previous night. The security guard employee is believed to be ‘master-mind’ behind the business robbery and theft.

“Amongst the recovered items includes four flat-screen TVs, three large speakers, one deep freezer, two amplifiers, an aircirculator fan, various brands of liquor,a

grinder,one cash till machine, a tool box with tools, two microphones, electrical cables, a Dj mixer and disco lights. The estimated value of the of the stolen properties is R150 000,” said Captain Tshilate.

Suspect was immediately arrested and his colleague ran away.

Lesego nominated at the Vaal Music Awards!

Congratulations are in order for our esteemed contributor and radio presenter, Lesego Mohlamme.

Born in the small town of Koppies (Free State) and living most of his life in the Sedibeng’s Orange Farm, Mohlamme has used his passion and persistence to be where he is today.

“In 2015, I heard about auditions for news readers on one of the local community radio stations, Thetha FM. I thought to myself that ‘let me try this opportunity,”said Lesego.

His first experience working behind the mic came when he shadowed the head of news at Thetha FM, Musa Msipha. “After voice testing, I was introduced to Mr Musa Msipha who told me that I will be provided with three months training before I go on air. I was so excited to hear that, it was like I was dreaming.” But to his surprise, only three days into his training, Lesego was thrown in the deep end when he had to prepare for his first news bulletin.

With very little experience but a willingness to learn, Lesego prepared his scripts and got a warm welcome from the Thetha FM staff. “Mr Tsatsi Tseke (presenter of the midday show) made me feel relaxed. After my news bulletin, everyone was excited - from the studio to the listeners. That’s when I realised that I have a talent in radio,” he said.

Mohlamme (41) is motivated by the community he lives in. As a self-taught radio presenter, he believes in hard work in everything he does. The nomination for

Best Radio Presenter at this year’s Vaal Music Awards is a testament of this. “I feel honoured and this surely makes me appreciate every chance I get to reach out to people,” Lesego explained.

Speaking about the next generation of local radio presenters that are inspired by him, Lesego believes in persistence paying off at the end of it all. “Its not easy to work in the radio industry. But you have to believe in yourself, nurture your gift. Don’t stop for nothing, press forth. When I was seven years old, I used to read funny news for my classmates during lunch time at school. I was inspired by Ntate Matjamesekhoane, who used to read news at Lesedi FM during the 1980s,” he said.

Currently working at Hope FM 103.0, Lesego now hosts his own current affairs show called Lentsoe La Hao which airs every Monday to Thursday from 6pm. He also is Mapepeza Newspaper’s Sesotho translator and Sedibeng news correspondent.

The 2nd annual Vaal Music Awards take place at The Palace in De Deur on March 29.

Fake cops hijack Fortuner at Heidelberg’s ‘Ghost Bridge’!

Police opened a hijacking case docket after after a 55 years old man was hijacked of his Toyota Fortuner at Spoogbrug (also known as the ‘Ghost Bridge’) near the N3 Freeway on Saturday evening (February 21).

The complainant was driving from Pinetown hearding to Vosloorus in Gauteng.

He was driving in his silver Toyota Fortuner with registration number CC-60-PSGP. The complainant alleges that after passing the Spoogbrug, he was stopped

by VW Golf flashing Police blue light,” said police spokesperson Thivhulawi Tshilate.

After adhering to the socalled police’s stop signal, there were also two other unknown vehicles following. A man wearing a police reflector jacket came towards the victim.

Whilst still awaiting to hear why they stopped him, the victim was pointed with a firearm.

“The suspect opened the door, jumped into the complainant's car and ordered the victim to the back seat.

Three more suspects arrived. They boarded into the Toyota Fortuner, tied his hands with shoe lases and drove with him for a while. The complainant was dropped off in Kliprivier area. His bank cards were taken and forced him to give them pincodes. The value of the hijacked silver Toyoya Fortuner is R350 000. Suspects are unknown and they are stil at large,” said captain Tshilate.

Education a top priority in Mpumalanga!

The Mpumalanga Provincial Government will begin with the construction of seven new schools in five fastgrowing towns soon.

Delivering her State of the Province Address on Tuesday (February 24), Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane said two schools will be built in Mbombela, one in Secunda, Ermelo, Lydenburg and eMalahleni, respectively.

“The province has prioritised the alleviation of overcrowding in urban areas. We have conducted a needs assessment for additional classrooms in fast-growing towns and all other urban areas,” the Premier said.

The province also plans to build a school for deaf children, which will be housed within the City of Mbombela Municipality. The project is at the design stage. In addition, the province is working towards completely eradicating all pit latrines in schools and eradicate unsafe structures.

“Working with our private sector partners, we are making concerted efforts to increase skills development and competencies to prepare learners for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“The process of developing a curriculum to introduce digital skills teaching, learning, coding and robotics is in its final stages,” Mtsweni said.

The coding and robotics curriculum will develop learners’ ability to solve problems, think critically, work collaboratively and creatively, function in a digital and information-driven world, apply digital and information and communication technology (ICT) skills, and transfer these skills to solve everyday problems.

This will be piloted across 100 schools in the province in the 2021 academic year.

Sasol has also sponsored teachers to be trained as master teachers for robotics and coding in the province.

Through the Sasol Foundation, Sasol has created access to high quality, low-cost multimedia enriched textbooks for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for use by learners and teachers.

“One of the biggest developmental challenges facing Mpumalanga in particular and South Africa in general is the high number of children who do not learn to read for meaning in the early years of schooling.

“In an effort to ensure that our 10-year-olds read for meaning, we will expand the early grade reading intervention strategy to 300 more schools in collaboration with academics at various universities and international donor organisations,” the Premier said.

These are available free of charge online.

To date, a total of 180 volumes of books have been completed and published online.

Skills development As part of the province’s drive to address the shortage of rare skills, 281 learners were sent to study in Russia.

The Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (merSETA) has also partnered with the province and funded 81 new students, who are studying overseas.

“Our bursary scheme has assisted more than 3 334 learners, who are studying in various fields like medicine, veterinary science, information technology, aviation, education (maths and science) and engineering.

“The artisan development programme, in partnership with Hydra Arc, was set up to deal with and address the issue of artisan development in the province, as envisaged by the National Development Plan,” said MtsweniTsipane.

This has thus far produced 2 950 artisans, ranging from welding and pipe fabricators, boiler making, safety and quality officers.

“The programme has contributed immensely by changing the lives of young people who would otherwise have faced a very bleak future,” Mtsweni said.

In response to the call made by President Ramaphosa, on the need for short-term courses, the province will, in partnership with its private sector partners, intensify and increase the number of existing programmes to 25 000 young people trained in various skills during the next financial year.

Upgrading the Health system A few years ago, the province began investing in infrastructure and some of those projects are now nearing completion.

“The new Middleburg district hospital will soon be completed.

We are also at an advanced stage with the upgrading of Bethal District Hospital and the upgrading of Mmmetlhake District Hospital is continuing in earnest,” the Premier said.

The construction of Mapulaneng Regional Hospital, Siyathemba CHC (in Balfour, Dipaleseng) and Kanyamazane CHC has already started.

“We will continue with refurbishment of the oncology chemotherapy ward and refurbishment of nursing accommodation at the Rob Ferreira Tertiary hospital.

The Department of Health will also complete the construction of Pankop CHC. “We are also purchasing 67 new ambulances to improve turnaround time and equipping all those that were purchased recently with the necessary lifesaving equipment,” Mtsweni said.

Transforming the economy In a move to industrialise the province, the Mpumalanga In-

dustrial Development Plan, aimed at promoting the development and establishment of Industrial Technology Parks, will be implemented.

This plan prioritises areas with a primary focus on agriculture and forestry, mining and metals, and petro-chemicals.

The province has committed to supporting township and rural economies, as well as small businesses.

“In this regard, our priority projects remain the Mpumalanga International Fresh Produce Market and its associated AgriHubs, as well as the Nkomazi SEZ [Special Economic Zone].

“It is imperative, now more than ever, for us to ensure that our catalytic projects such as the Nkomazi SEZ and the Mpumalanga International Fresh Produce Market are strategically positioned, not only to stimulate economic activity but also to create sustainable work opportunities for our people,” the Premier said.

The province will further tap into the Green Economy, which will bring myriad new opportunities, where waste streams are turned into input streams for new economic activity, leading ultimately to a zero waste industrial ecosystem.

New horizons for Tourism According to the Premier, the tourism sector contributed about 7% to the GDP of the province.

“In an effort to address the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment, we are in the process of optimizing the holistic value proposition of the tourism industry in the Province,” she said. Amongst those plans is to increase local and foreign tourism through marketing, infrastructure and tourism safety.

Gauteng unveils new ‘Plan of Action’ for next decade!

The Gauteng Provincial Government will in the next five years spend R60 billion on building and maintaining infrastructure, which will contribute to the creation of an additional 100 000 jobs, and facilitate the development of 50 black industrialists.

Delivering his State of the Province Address, or SOPA at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (formerly known as MEDUNSA) in Tshwane on February 25, Premier David Makhura said the provincial government will up-scale its Welfare-toWork Programme to enable 100 000 unemployed young women, who currently depend on State grants, to graduate and create self-employment in the township economy.

The Premier said having learnt from the impact of Tshepo 1 Million in improving the skills, employability and entrepreneurship potential of more than half a million young people, the provincial government is mainstreaming youth employment interventions into all 10 highgrowth sectors.

“Every company in every sector that requires our support must create opportunities for the youth. We are using the lever of public procurement policy decisively to promote youth employment, women empowerment, and the growth of black businesses and township-based enterprises,” Makhura said.

Commitment to Township Economy Revitilization Over the next five years, Makhura said they will step up economic empowerment programmes in Gauteng by spending R4 billion per year in buying goods and services from 2 000 township enterprises, and using the infrastructure programme to support 50 black industrialists, enabling them to participate in the 10 high-growth sectors of the Gauteng economy.

The provincial government will also support 50 emerging black

farmers and 20 black agro-processors to help them turn their businesses into full-scale commercial agri-food enterprises; support 500 cooperatives in the care economy through an enabling policy framework that will enable government to buy uniforms, dignity packs and food packs for vulnerable households directly from cooperatives, instead of going through established businesses, and create 250 000 sustainable and decent jobs for young people.

“We will use the provincial government’s infrastructure programme to promote industrialisation by buying building and construction materials made by transformed South African manufacturers, especially those located in Gauteng. The materials for building new houses, schools, hospitals, clinics, roads and government buildings must come from South African firms,” Makhura explained.

From May this year, the installations, repairs and maintenance on public facilities will be done by artisans from townships.

New Bill for Township Economic Development Following a commitment made in July 2019, the provincial government will in June this year introduce the Township Economic Development Bill in the Provincial Legislature.

The Premier said the new law will cancel all by-laws that restrict, frustrate and suppress the operations of small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) and informal businesses.

“This new law will create new conditions for SMMEs and township businesses to create wealth and employment as they grow and prosper,” Increase intra-Africa Trade In an effort to grow the economy

and increase Gauteng’s exports and trade within the continent, 10 high-growth sectors have been identified, which will produce manufactured goods and services that must be destined for the entire Africa Continental Free Trade Area.

Building integrated human settlements “Through the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, we intend to increase exports to the continent by 15% by 2025.

In 2030, intra-Africa Trade should contribute to the creation and maintenance of 150 000 jobs, up from the current 50 000 jobs. We also want to increase exports to major regions of the world by 10% by 2025,” Premier Makhura said.

Meanwhile, the province has finalised plans to complete all incomplete human settlements projects, including the Urban Renewal Projects in Alexandra, Evaton, Kliptown, Bekkersdal and Winterveldt.

Makhura said the province is working with the National Housing Finance Corporation, ‘Indlu’ and ‘Umastandi’ social capital entrepreneurs to enable township property owners to develop formal backrooms from which sustainable incomes can be generated.

“This will provide an additional 250 000 people with affordable rental and decent accommodation over the next five to 10 years,” he said.

The past 25 years have seen unprecedented levels of housing delivery in Gauteng, with more than 1.2 million public government-subsidised houses being built in the province alone, benefiting close to four million people.

The Premier said during this decade, the provincial government will ensure that there are no incomplete housing projects or completed houses that are not allocated.

He, however, warned that the provincial government has

ANC member dies during public meeting shooting!

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has strongly condemned the shooting incident that took place on February 19, during a By-Elections public meeting held in Emfuleni’s Ward 16. The incident led to the death of one of their comrades, Sindy Brightness Mhlongo.

“Mhlongo (33) fatally sustained a gunshot wound to her head after an unknown person opened fire at the gathering. The Meeting was to prepare for upcoming ByElections in Ward 16 on 18 March 2020.

It was attended by ANC members, community members and other stakeholders from the area,” said ANC Gauteng spokesperson Bones Modise.

It is alleged that during the meeting held in the evening hours, the electric main switch at the Rus-ter-vaal Community Hall was suddenly switched-off while people were still inside the hall.

“People rushed outside as it was dark in-

side. It was at this point that eight gunshots were fired outside the hall. One of the random bullets unfortunately caught Comrade Mhlongo who was confirmed dead on the scene. No other injuries were reported. The ANC Gauteng Province sends its deepest condolences to the immediate family of Comrade Sindy Brightness Mhlongo, her relatives, friends and comrades,” said Modise.

A case of murder has been opened at the De Deur Police Station.

At this point, suspects are still at large and therefore the party has called on community members who might have any information that would be of use to the police to contact the nearest law enforcement agency.

Chemical engineer goes back to brewing Gemere!

To maintain the authenticity of traditional ginger-beer making, chemical engineer Mpho Mohaswa founded Precious and Pearl Brands, a business that makes concentrate ginger beer, a recipe she learnt from her mother-in-law.

As a former chemical engineer Mpho was frustrated by the corporate environment and decided to leave her job and pursue more interesting projects, like opening her own business.

Rooted in tradition, Precious and Pearl Brands brew a popular, homemade ginger beer (also known as Gemere) enjoyed at weddings, funerals and family gatherings.

“The idea of selling Gemere was to bring convenience and to preserve a traditional recipe that is slowly being lost because the knowledge has not been passed on from the older generation to the younger generation. It also takes 12 hours to prepare and people are just frustrated by the process of making it.

This delicious drink is normally brought out to impress the all-important elders at family functions and is really simple to make.

Mpho says she caught the entrepreneurship bug at the age of 10 and shares how it all started.

“My love for entrepreneurship was inspired by my dad; when I was young, he would buy me a bulk supply of chips that I repackaged and sold during sports day at school, even though I would eat stock at times,” says Mpho.

Although she had a full-time job as a chemical engineer, Mpho continued selling products like Herbalife and perfumes.

Mpho has big plans to expand and employ more people.

“I am currently training my employee to make Gemere the traditional way. I will then bring in someone else to do the filling and labeling of the product,” says Mpho.

“I am also being assisted by the SAB Foundation’s Tholoana programme,” says Mpho.

School Sport Champs in Gauteng celebrated!

Excellence in school sport in Gauteng Province took centre stage at the annual Gauteng School Sport Awards ceremony, held on Thursday, February 27 at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

Top performing schools, teams, sporting codes and individual coaches, administrators and learner/athletes were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in 2019.

Itumeleng Secondary School was the night’s biggest winner, winning in all 3 categories for which they were nominated. The school for Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN), was awarded LSEN School of the Year for having produced several learners who have competing in provincial, national and international sporting competitions across a number of sporting codes including, athletics, gymnastics, cricket, football and netball.

Itumeleng pupils Ofense Matsite and Basetsana Skosana were crowned LSEN Male Athlete of the Year and Female Athlete of

the Year for their respective success in football and netball.

Organized annually by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation together with the Gauteng Department of Education, the School Sport Awards shine a light on achievements made in school sports as the foundation of talent identifi-

The Hanyani (live long in Tsonga) Wellness programme was launched on February 22 at Garankuwa Stadium in Tshwane, has been welcomed by many as an important and necessary initiative.

Old and young people came in their numbers and all were left calling for more of the programme.

They benefited from activities provided by professionals including yoga, aerobics and a walk around the Stadium.

Other services included health tests and advises on healthy eating.

The programme is aimed at getting Gauteng active and healthy and thereby reducing the burden on health services in the province.
